Expert Perceptions of Game-changing Innovations towards Net Zero

Current technological improvements are yet to put the world on track to net-zero which will require the uptake of transformative low-carbon innovations to supplement mitigation efforts. However the role of such innovations is not yet fully understood; some of these ‘miracles’ are considered indispensable to Paris Agreement-compliant mitigation but their limitations availability and potential remain a source of debate. We evaluate such potentially game-changing innovations from the experts’ perspective aiming to support the design of realistic decarbonisation scenarios and better-informed net-zero policy strategies. In a worldwide survey 260 climate and energy experts assessed transformative innovations against their mitigation potential at-scale availability and/or widescale adoption and risk of delayed diffusion. Hierarchical clustering and multi-criteria decision-making revealed differences in perceptions of core technological innovations with next generation energy storage alternative building materials iron-ore electrolysis and hydrogen in steelmaking emerging as top priorities. Instead technologies highly represented in well-below-2◦C scenarios seemingly feature considerable and impactful delays hinting at the need to re-evaluate their role in future pathways. Experts’ assessments appear to converge more on the potential role of other disruptive innovations including lifestyle shifts and alternative economic models indicating the importance of scenarios including non-technological and demand-side innovations. To provide insights for expert elicitation processes we finally note caveats related to the level of representativeness among the 260 engaged experts the level of their expertise that may have varied across the examined innovations and the potential for subjective interpretation to which the employed linguistic scales may be prone to.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation Evaluation for Hydrogen Vehicles in Private Garages. Experiments and Modelling

Governments and local authorities introduce new incentives and regulations for cleaner mobility as part of their environmental strategies to address energy challenges. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are becoming increasingly important and will extend beyond captive fleets reaching private users. Research on hydrogen safety issues is currently led in several projects in order to highlight and manage risks of FCEVs in confined spaces such as tunnels underground parkings repair garages etc. But what about private garages - that involve specific geometries volumes congestion ventilation? This study has been carried out in the framework of PRHyVATE JIP project which aims at better understanding hydrogen build-up and distribution in a private garage. The investigation went through different rates and modes of ventilation. As first step an HAZID (Hazard Identification) has been realized for a generic FCEV. This preliminary work allowed to select and prioritize accidental release scenarios to be explored experimentally with helium in a 40-m3 garage. Several configurations of release ventilation modes and congestion – in transient regime and at steady state – have been tested. Then analytical and numerical calculation approaches have been applied and adjusted to develop a simplified methodology. This methodology takes into account natural ventilation for assessment of hydrogen accumulation and mitigation means optimization. Finally a global risk evaluation – including ignition of a flammable hydrogen-air mixture – has been performed to account for the mostly feared events and to evaluate their consequences in a private garage. Thus preliminary recommendations good practices and safety features for safely parking FCEVs in private garages can be proposed.
An Overview of the Recent Advances in Composite Materials and Artificial Intelligence for Hydrogen Storage Vessels Design

The environmental impact of CO2 emissions is widely acknowledged making the development of alternative propulsion systems a priority. Hydrogen is a potential candidate to replace fossil fuels for transport applications with three technologies considered for the onboard storage of hydrogen: storage in the form of a compressed gas storage as a cryogenic liquid and storage as a solid. These technologies are now competing to meet the requirements of vehicle manufacturers; each has its own unique challenges that must be understood to direct future research and development efforts. This paper reviews technological developments for Hydrogen Storage Vessel (HSV) designs including their technical performance manufacturing costs safety and environmental impact. More specifically an up-to-date review of fiber-reinforced polymer composite HSVs was explored including the end-of-life recycling options. A review of current numerical models for HSVs was conducted including the use of artificial intelligence techniques to assess the performance of composite HSVs leading to more sophisticated designs for achieving a more sustainable future.

The use of hydrogen as energy carrier in a low emission microturbine could be an interesting option for renewable energy storage distributed generation and combined heat & power. However the hydrogen using in gas turbine is limited by the NOx emissions and the difficulty to operate safely. CFD simulations represent a powerful and mature tool to perform detailed 3-D investigation for the development of a prototype before carrying out an experimental analysis. This paper describes the CFD supported redesign of the Turbec T100 microturbine combustion chamber natural gas-fired to allow the operation on 100% hydrogen.
Hydrogen Storage: Recent Improvements and Industrial Prospective

Efficient storage of hydrogen is crucial for the success of hydrogen energy markets (early markets as well as transportation market). Hydrogen can be stored either as a compressed gas a refrigerated liquefied gas a cryo-compressed gas or in hydrides. This paper gives an overview of hydrogen storage technologies and details the specific issues and constraints related to the materials behaviour in hydrogen and conditions representative of hydrogen energy uses. It is indeed essential for the development of applications requiring long-term performance to have good understanding of long-term behaviour of the materials of the storage device and its components under operational loads.
AC-DC Converters for Electrolyzer Applications: State of the Art and Future Challenges

The main objective of the article is to provide a thorough review of currently used AC-DC converters for alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers in power grid or wind energy conversion systems. Based on the current literature this article aims at emphasizing the advantages and drawbacks of AC-DC converters mainly based on thyristor rectifier bridges and chopper-rectifiers. The analysis is mainly focused on the current issues for these converters in terms of specific energy consumption current ripple reliability efficiency and power quality. From this analysis it is shown that thyristors-based rectifiers are particularly fit for high-power applications but require the use of active and passive filters to enhance the power quality. By comparison the association combination of the chopper-rectifier can avoid the use of bulky active and passive filters since it can improve power quality. However the use of a basic chopper (i.e. buck converter) presents several disadvantages from the reliability energy efficiency voltage ratio and current ripple point of view. For this reason new emerging DC-DC converters must be employed to meet these important issues according to the availability of new power switching devices. Finally based on the authors’ experience in power conversion for PEM electrolyzers a discussion is provided regarding the future challenges that must face power electronics for green hydrogen production based on renewable energy sources.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles—A Brief Review of Current Topologies and Energy Management Strategies

With the development of technologies in recent decades and the imposition of international standards to reduce greenhouse gas emissions car manufacturers have turned their attention to new technologies related to electric/hybrid vehicles and electric fuel cell vehicles. This paper focuses on electric fuel cell vehicles which optimally combine the fuel cell system with hybrid energy storage systems represented by batteries and ultracapacitors to meet the dynamic power demand required by the electric motor and auxiliary systems. This paper compares the latest proposed topologies for fuel cell electric vehicles and reveals the new technologies and DC/DC converters involved to generate up-to-date information for researchers and developers interested in this specialized field. From a software point of view the latest energy management strategies are analyzed and compared with the reference strategies taking into account performance indicators such as energy efficiency hydrogen consumption and degradation of the subsystems involved which is the main challenge for car developers. The advantages and disadvantages of three types of strategies (rule-based strategies optimization-based strategies and learning-based strategies) are discussed. Thus future software developers can focus on new control algorithms in the area of artificial intelligence developed to meet the challenges posed by new technologies for autonomous vehicles.
Hydrogen Dispersion in a Closed Environment

The highly combustible nature of hydrogen poses a great hazard creating a number of problems with its safety and handling. As a part of safety studies related to the use of hydrogen in a confined environment it is extremely important to have a good knowledge of the dispersion mechanism.<br/>The present work investigates the concentration field and flammability envelope from a small scale leak. The hydrogen is released into a 0.47 m × 0.33 m x 0.20 m enclosure designed as a 1/15 – scale model of a room in a nuclear facility. The performed tests evaluates the influence of the initial conditions at the leakage source on the dispersion and mixing characteristics in a confined environment. The role of the leak location and the presence of obstacles are also analyzed. Throughout the test during the release and the subsequent dispersion phase temporal profiles of hydrogen concentration are measured using thermal conductivity gauges within the enclosure. In addition the BOS (Background Oriented Schlieren) technique is used to visualise the cloud evolution inside the enclosure. These instruments allow the observation and quantification of the stratification effects.
Fast Synthesis of TiNi by Mechanical Alloying and its Hydrogenation Properties

Mechanical alloying is widely used for the synthesis of hydrogen storage materials. However amorphization and contamination triggered by long-time milling are serious drawbacks for obtaining efficient hydrogen storage. In this work short-time ball milling synthesis is explored for a representative hydride forming compound: TiNi. Through structural morphological and chemical characterizations we evidence that formation of TiNi is complete in only 20 min with minor Fe contamination (0.2 wt%). Cross-sectional analysis of powder stuck on milling balls reveals that alloy formation occurs through the interdiffusion between thin layers of co-laminated pure elements. Hydrogenation thermodynamics and kinetics of short-time mechanically alloyed TiNi are similar to those of coarse-grained compounds obtained by classical high-temperature melting. Mechanical alloying is a suitable method for fast and energy-efficient synthesis of intermetallic compounds such as TiNi.
Cylinders and Tubes Used as Buffers in Filling Stations

Buffers are key components for hydrogen filling stations that are currently being developed. Type 1 or composite cylinders are used for this application. The type used depends on many parameters including pressure level cost and space available for the filling station. No international standards exist for such high pressure vessels whereas many standards exist covering Types 123 and 4 used for transport of gas or on-board fuel tanks. It is suggested to use the cylinders approved for transport or on-board applications as buffers. This solution appears to be safe if at least one issue is solved. The main difference is that transport or on-board cylinders are cycled from a low pressure to a high pressure during service whereas buffers are cycled from a relatively high pressure (corresponding to the vehicle’s filling pressure) to the MAWP. Another difference is that buffers are cycled many times per day. For standards developers requesting to systematically verify that buffers pass millions of cycles at low pressure amplitude would be impractical. Several standards and codes give formulae to estimate the number of shallow cycles when number of deep cycles are known. In this paper we describe tests performed on all types of composite cylinders to verify or determine the appropriate formulae.

Hydrogen energy applications often require that systems are used indoors (e.g. industrial trucks for materials handling in a warehouse facility fuel cells located in a room or hydrogen stored and distributed from a gas cabinet). It may also be necessary or desirable to locate some hydrogen system components/equipment inside indoor or outdoor enclosures for security or safety reasons to isolate them from the end-user and the public or from weather conditions.<br/>Using of hydrogen in confined environments requires detailed assessments of hazards and associated risks including potential risk prevention and mitigation features. The release of hydrogen can potentially lead to the accumulation of hydrogen and the formation of a flammable hydrogen-air mixture or can result in jet-fires. Within Hyindoor European Project carried out for the EU Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking safety design guidelines and engineering tools have been developed to prevent and mitigate hazardous consequences of hydrogen release in confined environments. Three main areas are considered: Hydrogen release conditions and accumulation vented deflagrations jet fires and including under-ventilated flame regimes (e.g. extinguishment or oscillating flames and steady burns). Potential RCS recommendations are also identified.
Results of the Pre-normative Research Project PRESLHY for the Safe Use of Liquid Hydrogen

Liquid hydrogen (LH2) compared to compressed gaseous hydrogen offers advantages for large-scale transport and storage of hydrogen with higher densities. Although the gas industry has good experience with LH2 only little experience is available for the new applications of LH2 as an energy carrier. Therefore the European FCH JU funded project PRESLHY conducted pre-normative research for the safe use of cryogenic LH2 in non-industrial settings. The central research consisted of a broad experimental program combined with analytical work modelling and simulations belonging to the three key phenomena of the accident chain: release and mixing ignition and combustion. The presented results improve the general understanding of the behavior of LH2 in accidents and provide some design guidelines and engineering tools for safer use of LH2. Recommendations for improvement of current international standards are derived.
Experimental Challenges in Studying Hydrogen Absorption in Ultrasmall Metal Nanoparticles

Recent advances on synthesis characterization and hydrogen absorption properties of ultrasmall metal nanoparticles (defined here as objects with average size ≤3 nm) are briefly reviewed in the first part of this work. The experimental challenges encountered in performing accurate measurements of hydrogen absorption in Mg- and noble metal-based ultrasmall nanoparticles are addressed. The second part of this work reports original results obtained for ultrasmall bulk-immiscible Pd–Rh nanoparticles. Carbon-supported Pd–Rh nanoalloys in the whole binary chemical composition range have been successfully prepared by liquid impregnation method followed by reduction at 300°C. EXAFS investigations suggested that the local structure of these nanoalloys is partially segregated into Rh-rich core and Pd-rich surface coexisting within the same nanoparticles. Downsizing to ultrasmall dimensions completely suppresses the hydride formation in Pd-rich nanoalloys at ambient conditions contrary to bulk and larger nanosized (5–6 nm) counterparts. The ultrasmall Pd90Rh10 nanoalloy can absorb hydrogen-forming solid solutions under these conditions as suggested by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Apart from this composition common laboratory techniques such as in situ XRD DSC and PCI failed to clarify the hydrogen interaction mechanism: either adsorption on developed surfaces or both adsorption and absorption with formation of solid solutions. Concluding insights were brought by in situ EXAFS experiments at synchrotron: ultrasmall Pd75Rh25 and Pd50Rh50 nanoalloys absorb hydrogen-forming solid solutions at ambient conditions. Moreover the hydrogen solubility in these solid solutions is higher with increasing Pd content and this trend can be understood in terms of hydrogen preferential occupation in the Pd-rich regions as suggested by in situ EXAFS. The Rh-rich nanoalloys (Pd25Rh75 and Pd10Rh90) only adsorb hydrogen on the developed surface of ultrasmall nanoparticles. In summary in situ characterization techniques carried out at large-scale facilities are unique and powerful tools for in-depth investigation of hydrogen interaction with ultrasmall nanoparticles at local level.
The Impact of Hydrogen on Mechanical Properties; A New In Situ Nanoindentation Testing Method

We have designed a new method for electrochemical hydrogen charging which allows us to charge very thin coarse-grained specimens from the bottom and perform nanomechanical testing on the top. As the average grain diameter is larger than the thickness of the sample this setup allows us to efficiently evaluate the mechanical properties of multiple single crystals with similar electrochemical conditions. Another important advantage is that the top surface is not affected by corrosion by the electrolyte. The nanoindentation results show that hydrogen reduces the activation energy for homogenous dislocation nucleation by approximately 15–20% in a (001) grain. The elastic modulus also was observed to be reduced by the same amount. The hardness increased by approximately 4% as determined by load-displacement curves and residual imprint analysis.

The Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a massive blow to countries around the world choking economies and transforming daily life for billions of people. This extraordinary disruption has significantly impacted the energy sector with worrying implications for clean energy transitions. Some key clean energy technologies have been encouragingly resilient to the effects of the crisis but so far there is little to suggest that the dramatic structural progress needed to achieve long-term climate and energy goals will happen in the current turmoil. Unprecedented action and leadership from governments companies and other real-world decision makers will be required to put the world more firmly on a sustainable long-term pathway. The energy sector must achieve dramatic sustained emissions reductions through policy investment and innovation measures across all energy sectors and technologies.
Building on Tracking Clean Energy Progress 2020 and other COVID-19 analysis this article takes stock of how the crisis has affected energy sectors and technologies thus far and explores the potential implications for clean energy transitions over the medium and longer term.

Static and Dynamic Studies of Hydrogen Adsorption on Nanoporous Carbon Gels

Although hydrogen is considered to be one of the most promising green fuels its efficient and safe storage and use still raise several technological challenges. Physisorption in porous materials may offer an attractive means of storage but the state-of-the-art capacity of these kinds of systems is still limited. To overcome the present drawbacks a deeper understanding of the adsorption and surface diffusion mechanism is required along with new types of adsorbents developed and/or optimised for this purpose. In the present study we compare the hydrogen adsorption behaviour of three carbon gels exhibiting different porosity and/or surface chemistry. In addition to standard adsorption characterisation techniques neutron spin-echo spectroscopy (NSE) has been also applied to explore the surface mobility of the adsorbed hydrogen. Our results reveal that both the porosity and surface chemistry of the adsorbent play a significant role in the adsorption of in these systems.

Use of Hydrogen in Off-Grid Locations, a Techno-Economic Assessment

Diesel generators are currently used as an off-grid solution for backup power but this causes CO2 and GHG emissions noise emissions and the negative effects of the volatile diesel market influencing operating costs. Green hydrogen production by means of water electrolysis has been proposed as a feasible solution to fill the gaps between demand and production the main handicaps of using exclusively renewable energy in isolated applications. This manuscript presents a business case of an off-grid hydrogen production by electrolysis applied to the electrification of isolated sites. This study is part of the European Ely4off project (n◦ 700359). Under certain techno-economic hypothesis four different system configurations supplied exclusively by photovoltaic are compared to find the optimal Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE): photovoltaic-batteries photovoltaic-hydrogen-batteries photovoltaic-diesel generator and diesel generator; the influence of the location and the impact of different consumptions profiles is explored. Several simulations developed through specific modeling software are carried out and discussed. The main finding is that diesel-based systems still allow lower costs than any other solution although hydrogen-based solutions can compete with other technologies under certain conditions.

Fully decarbonizing global industry is essential to achieving climate stabilization and reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050–2070 is necessary to limit global warming to 2 °C. This paper assembles and evaluates technical and policy interventions both on the supply side and on the demand side. It identifies measures that employed together can achieve net zero industrial emissions in the required timeframe. Key supply-side technologies include energy efficiency (especially at the system level) carbon capture electrification and zero-carbon hydrogen as a heat source and chemical feedstock. There are also promising technologies specific to each of the three top-emitting industries: cement iron & steel and chemicals & plastics. These include cement admixtures and alternative chemistries several technological routes for zero-carbon steelmaking and novel chemical catalysts and separation technologies. Crucial demand-side approaches include material-efficient design reductions in material waste substituting low-carbon for high-carbon materials and circular economy interventions (such as improving product longevity reusability ease of refurbishment and recyclability). Strategic well-designed policy can accelerate innovation and provide incentives for technology deployment. High-value policies include carbon pricing with border adjustments or other price signals; robust government support for research development and deployment; and energy efficiency or emissions standards. These core policies should be supported by labeling and government procurement of low-carbon products data collection and disclosure requirements and recycling incentives. In implementing these policies care must be taken to ensure a just transition for displaced workers and affected communities. Similarly decarbonization must complement the human and economic development of low- and middle-income countries.
Life Cycle Assessments on Battery Electric Vehicles and Electrolytic Hydrogen: The Need for Calculation Rules and Better Databases on Electricity

LCAs of electric cars and electrolytic hydrogen production are governed by the consumption of electricity. Therefore LCA benchmarking is prone to choices on electricity data. There are four issues: (1) leading Life Cycle Impact (LCI) databases suffer from inconvenient uncertainties and inaccuracies (2) electricity mix in countries is rapidly changing year after year (3) the electricity mix is strongly fluctuating on an hourly and daily basis which requires time-based allocation approaches and (4) how to deal with nuclear power in benchmarking. This analysis shows that: (a) the differences of the GHG emissions of the country production mix in leading databases are rather high (30%) (b) in LCA a distinction must be made between bundled and unbundled registered electricity certificates (RECs) and guarantees of origin (GOs); the residual mix should not be applied in LCA because of its huge inaccuracy (c) time-based allocation rules for renewables are required to cope with periods of overproduction (d) benchmarking of electricity is highly affected by the choice of midpoints and/or endpoint systems and (e) there is an urgent need for a new LCI database based on measured emission data continuously kept up-to-date transparent and open access.
