From Renewable Energy to Sustainable Protein Sources: Advancement, Challenges, and Future Roadmaps

The concerns over food security and protein scarcity driven by population increase and higher standards of living have pushed scientists toward finding new protein sources. A considerable proportion of resources and agricultural lands are currently dedicated to proteinaceous feed production to raise livestock and poultry for human consumption. The 1st generation of microbial protein (MP) came into the market as land-independent proteinaceous feed for livestock and aquaculture. However MP may be a less sustainable alternative to conventional feeds such as soybean meal and fishmeal because this technology currently requires natural gas and synthetic chemicals. These challenges have directed researchers toward the production of 2nd generation MP by integrating renewable energies anaerobic digestion nutrient recovery biogas cleaning and upgrading carbon-capture technologies and fermentation. The fermentation of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) i.e. two protein rich microorganisms has shown a great potential on the one hand to upcycle effluents from anaerobic digestion into protein rich biomass and on the other hand to be coupled to renewable energy systems under the concept of Power-to-X. This work compares various production routes for 2nd generation MP by reviewing the latest studies conducted in this context and introducing the state-of-the-art technologies hoping that the findings can accelerate and facilitate upscaling of MP production. The results show that 2nd generation MP depends on the expansion of renewable energies. In countries with high penetration of renewable electricity such as Nordic countries off-peak surplus electricity can be used within MP-industry by supplying electrolytic H2 which is the driving factor for both MOB and HOB-based MP production. However nutrient recovery technologies are the heart of the 2nd generation MP industry as they determine the process costs and quality of the final product. Although huge attempts have been made to date in this context some bottlenecks such as immature nutrient recovery technologies less efficient fermenters with insufficient gas-to-liquid transfer and costly electrolytic hydrogen production and storage have hindered the scale up of MP production. Furthermore further research into techno-economic feasibility and life cycle assessment (LCA) of coupled technologies is still needed to identify key points for improvement and thereby secure a sustainable production system.
A Novel Exergy-based Assessment on a Multi-production Plant of Power, Heat and Hydrogen: Integration of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell and Rankine Steam Cycle

Multi-production plant is an idea highlighting cost- and energy-saving purposes. However just integrating different sub-systems is not desired and the output and performance based on evaluation criteria must be assessed. In this study an integrated energy conversion system composed of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) and Rankine steam cycle is proposed to develop a multi-production system of power heat and hydrogen to alleviate energy dissipation and to preserve the environment by utilizing and extracting the most possible products from the available energy source. With this regard natural gas and water are used to drive the SOEC and the Rankine steam cycle respectively. The required heat and power demand of the electrolyzer are designed to be provided by the fuel cell and the Rankine cycle. The feasibility of the designed integrated system is evaluated through comprehensive exergy-based analysis. The technical performance of the system is evaluated through exergy assessment and it is obtained that the SOFC and the SOEC can achieve to the high exergy efficiency of 84.8% and 63.7% respectively. The designed system provides 1.79 kg/h of hydrogen at 125 kPa. In addition the effective designed variables on the performance of the designed integrated system are monitored to optimize the system’s performance in terms of technical efficiency cost-effectivity and environmental considerations. This assessment shows that 59.4 kW of the available exergy is destructed in the combustion chamber. Besides the techno-economic analysis and exergoenvironmental assessment demonstrate the selected compressors should be re-designed to improve the cost-effectivity and decline the negative environmental impact of the designed integrated energy conversion system. In addition it is calculated that the SOEC has the highest total cost and also the highest negative impact on the environment compared to other designed units in the proposed integrated energy conversion system.
Improving Hydrogen Production Using Co-cultivation of Bacteria with Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Microalga

Hydrogen production by microalgae is a promising technology to achieve sustainable and clean energy. Among various photosynthetic microalgae able to produce hydrogen Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a model organism widely used to study hydrogen production. Oxygen produced by photosynthesis activity of microalgae has an inhibitory effect on both expression and activity of hydrogenases which are responsible for hydrogen production. Chlamydomonas can reach anoxia and produce hydrogen at low light intensity. Here the effect of bacteria co-cultivation on hydrogen produced by Chlamydomonas at low light intensity was studied. Results indicated that however co-culturing Escherichia coli Pseudomonas stutzeri and Pseudomonas putida reduced the growth of Chlamydomonas it enhanced hydrogen production up to 24% 46% and 32% respectively due to higher respiration rate in the bioreactors at low light intensity. Chlamydomonas could grow properly in presence of an unknown bacterial consortium and hydrogen evolution improved up to 56% in these co-cultures.
A Review of Hydrogen/rock/brine Interaction: Implications for Hydrogen Geo-storage

Hydrogen (H2) is currently considered a clean fuel to decrease anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and will play a vital role in climate change mitigation. Nevertheless one of the primary challenges of achieving a complete H2 economy is the large-scale storage of H2 which is unsafe on the surface because H2 is highly compressible volatile and flammable. Hydrogen storage in geological formations could be a potential solution to this problem because of the abundance of such formations and their high storage capacities. Wettability plays a critical role in the displacement of formation water and determines the containment safety storage capacity and amount of trapped H2 (or recovery factor). However no comprehensive review article has been published explaining H2 wettability in geological conditions. Therefore this review focuses on the influence of various parameters such as salinity temperature pressure surface roughness and formation type on wettability and consequently H2 storage. Significant gaps exist in the literature on understanding the effect of organic material on H2 storage capacity. Thus this review summarizes recent advances in rock/H2/brine systems containing organic material in various geological reservoirs. The paper also presents influential parameters affecting H2 storage capacity and containment safety including liquid–gas interfacial tension rock–fluid interfacial tension and adsorption. The paper aims to provide the scientific community with an expert opinion to understand the challenges of H2 storage and identify storage solutions. In addition the essential differences between underground H2 storage (UHS) natural gas storage and carbon dioxide geological storage are discussed and the direction of future research is presented. Therefore this review promotes thorough knowledge of UHS provides guidance on operating large-scale UHS projects encourages climate engineers to focus more on UHS research and provides an overview of advanced technology. This review also inspires researchers in the field of climate change to give more credit to UHS studies.

For fast-tracking climate change response green hydrogen is key for achieving greenhouse gas neutral energy systems. Especially Sub-Saharan Africa can benefit from it enabling an increased access to clean energy through utilizing its beneficial conditions for renewable energies. However developing green hydrogen strategies for Sub-Saharan Africa requires highly detailed and consistent information ranging from technical environmental economic and social dimensions which is currently lacking in literature. Therefore this paper provides a comprehensive novel approach embedding the required range of disciplines to analyze green hydrogen costpotentials in Sub-Saharan Africa. This approach stretches from a dedicated land eligibility based on local preferences a location specific renewable energy simulation locally derived sustainable groundwater limitations under climate change an optimization of local hydrogen energy systems and a socio-economic indicator-based impact analysis. The capability of the approach is shown for case study regions in Sub-Saharan Africa highlighting the need for a unified interdisciplinary approach.
Techno-economic Assessment of Hydrogen-based Energy Storage Systems in Determining the Optimal Configuration of the Nuclear-renewable Hybrid Energy System

Population growth and economic development have significantly increased global energy demand. Hence it has raised concerns about the increase in the consumption of fossil fuels and climate change. The present work introduced a new approach to using carbon-free energy sources such as nuclear and renewable to meet energy demand. The idea of using the Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy System (N-R HES) is suggested as a leading solution that couples a nuclear power plant with renewable energy and hydrogen-based storage systems. For this purpose using a meta-heuristic method based on Newton’s laws the configuration of the N-R HES is optimized from an economic and reliability point of view. The optimal system is selected from among six cases with different subsystems such as wind turbine photovoltaic panel nuclear reactor electrolysis fuel cell and hydrogen storage tank. Furthermore the performance of hydrogen-based energy storage systems such as hightemperature electrolysis (HTE) and low-temperature electrolysis (LTE) is evaluated from technical and economic aspects. The results of this work showed that using nuclear energy to supply the base load increases the reliability of the system and reduces the loss of power supply probability to zero. More than 70 % of the power is produced by nuclear reactors which includes more than 80 % of the system costs. The key findings showed that despite HTE’s higher efficiency using LTE as a storage system in N-R HES is more cost-effective. Finally due to recent developments and the safer design of nuclear reactors they can play an important role in combination with renewable energies to support carbon-free energy sectors especially in remote areas for decades to come.
Techno-economic and Environmental Assessment of a Solar-powered Multi-generation System for a Sustainable Energy, Hydrogen and Fresh-water Production

This study presents a comprehensive 4E (energy exergy economic and exergo-environmental) analysis of a solar-powered multi-generation system (MGS) that integrates parabolic trough collectors (PTCs) thermal energy storage (TES) an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) an absorption refrigeration cycle (ARC) a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEME) and a reverse osmosis (RO) unit to simultaneously produce electricity cooling potable water and hydrogen. A complete thermodynamic model is developed in Engineering Equation Solver (EES) to evaluate the system from technical economic and environmental perspectives. Results indicate that the MGS can convert solar energy into multiple outputs with energy and exergy efficiencies of 12.2% and 4.3% respectively. The highest and lowest energy efficiencies are found in PEME (58.6%) and ORC (7.4%) while the highest and lowest exergy efficiencies are related to PEME (57.4%) and PTC (11.9%) respectively. Despite notable environmental impacts from the complex subsystems (particularly PTC and PEME) the system demonstrates strong economic performance with a net present value of approximately USD 8 million an internal rate of return of 30% and a payback period of 3.8 years. Sensitivity analysis shows that increasing solar radiation reduces the number of required PTCs and shortens payback time with less effect on energy and exergy efficiencies due to increased thermal and radiative losses.
In-house Green Hydrogen Production for Steelmaking Decarbonisation using Steel Slag as Thermal Energy Storage Material: A Life Cycle Assessment

Steel production is a highly energy-intensive industry responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions. Electrification of this sector is challenging making green hydrogen technology a promising alternative. This research performs a thermodynamic analysis of green hydrogen production for steel manufacturing using the direct reduction method. Four solid oxide electrolyzer (SOE) modules replace the traditional reformer to produce 2.88 kg/s of hydrogen gas serving as a reducing agent for iron pellets to yield 30 kg/s of molten steel. These modules are powered by 37801 photovoltaic units. Additionally a thermal storage system utilizing 1342 tons of steel slag stores waste heat from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) exhaust gases. This stored energy preheats iron scraps charged into the EAF reducing energy consumption by 5%. A life cycle assessment conducted using open LCA software reveals that the global warming potential (GWP) for the entire process with a capacity of 30 kg/s equates to 93 kg of CO2. The study also assesses other environmental impacts such as acidification potential ozone formation fine particle formation and human toxicity. Results indicate that the EAF significantly contributes to global warming and fine particle formation while the direct reduction process notably impacts ozone formation and acidification potential.
Techno-economic Study of Gas Turbines with Hydrogen, Ammonia, and their Mixture Fuels

Ammonia is a versatile energy carrier without carbon emissions that can be used for power generation. In this article a techno-economic analysis has been done to predict the levelized cost of electricity production using gas turbines with clean fuel in Iran. In the technical discussion the analysis of different scenarios of ammonia and hydrogen fuel composition ratio was done and by keeping the turbine inlet temperature to the same gas turbine as the SGT5-2000E turbine the output power in different fuel ratios is around 192.8 to 229.0 MW was variable and reached the maximum value in some proportions. Also in the economic discussion the effects of fuel cost and interest rate parameters were investigated sensitivity analysis was performed on different combined ratios of ammonia and hydrogen in fuel and an economic analysis of the ideal ratio was conducted. The price of ammonia fuel was calculated from 222 $/ton to 2000 $/ton and the levelized cost of electricity production changed from 91.7 $/MWh to 673.4 $/MWh. Additionally an economic comparison was made between the utilization of ammonia-hydrogen and natural gas fuels. This alternative fuel can be a promising way to produce power without carbon emissions and suitable storage for renewables.
Comparative Techno-Economic Analysis of Gray Hydrogen Production Costs: A Case Study

Despite Iran’s considerable renewable energy (RE) potential and excellent wind capacity and high solar radiation levels these sources contribute only a small fraction of the country’s total energy production. This paper addresses the techno-economic viability of gray hydrogen production by these renewables with a particular focus on solar energy. Given the considerable potential of solar energy and the strategic location of Shahrekord it would be an optimal site for a hydrogen generation plant integrated with a solar field. HOMER Pro 3.18.3 software was utilized to model and optimize the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of steam reforming using different hydrocarbons in various scenarios. The results of this study indicate that natural gas (NG) reforming represents the most cost-effective method of gray hydrogen production in this city with an LCOH of −0.423 USD/kg. Other hydrocarbons such as diesel gasoline propane methanol and ethanol have a price per kilogram of produced hydrogen as follows: USD −0.4 USD −0.293 USD 1.17 USD 1.48 and USD 2.15. In addition integrating RE sources into hydrogen production was found to be viable. Moreover by implementing RE technologies CO2 emissions can be significantly reduced and energy security can be achieved.
The Impact of Sustainable Energy Technologies and Demand Response Programs on the Hub's Planning by the Practical Consideration of Tidal Turbines as a Novel Option

This paper investigates a multi-objective optimal energy planning strategy for a hub incorporating renewable and non-renewable resources like PV tidal turbine fuel-cell CHP boiler micro-turbine reactor reformer electrolyzer and energy storage by utilizing the time of use program (TOU). In this strategy tidal turbine fuel-cell and reformer technologies are considered novel technologies that simultaneously reduce the proposed hub’s cost and pollution. The hub’s total cost and pollution are considered objective functions. To make the results more realistic characteristics of the tidal turbine are investigated by utilizing the manufactory’s company information. The problem is then modeled as real mixed integer programming (RMIP) and is solved in GAMS software using a CPLEX solver. Epsilon constraints method and fuzzy satisfying approach are used to select the optimal solution based on the proposed model. Finally a sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the effective parameters that affect the planning’s results. The results show that the overall pollution is reduced by about 9% by assuming the proposed planning and the total profit is increased by about 30%.
Enhancing the Risk-oriented Participation of Wind Power Plants in Day-ahead Balancing, and Hydrogen Markets with Shared Multi-energy Storage Systems

The increasing demand for renewable energy sources (RES) to address environmental concerns and reduce fossil fuel dependency highlights the need for efficient energy storage and balancing mechanisms to manage RES output uncertainty. However providing dedicated storage units to RES owners is often infeasible. Additionally the growing interest in hydrogen utilization complicates optimal decision-making for multi-energy systems. To tackle these challenges this paper presents a novel bidding strategy enabling wind farms to participate in dayahead balancing and hydrogen markets through shared multi-energy storage (SMES) systems. These SMES which include both battery and hydrogen storage offer a cost-effective solution by allowing RES owners to rent storage capacity. By optimizing SMES utilization and wind farm management we propose an integrated strategy for day-ahead electrical and real-time balancing markets and also hydrogen markets. The approach incorporates with uncertainties of wind generation bidding by using conditional value at risk (CVaR) to account for different risk-aversion levels. The Dantzig–Wolfe Decomposition (DWD) method is applied to decentralize the problem reduce the calculation burden and enhance the data privacy. The framework is modeled as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) and solved using CPLEX solver via GAMS software. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy offering insights into the risk-oriented market participation of wind power plants with the aid of SMES system supporting a more sustainable and resilient energy system. The numerical results show that by utilizing a SMES with only batteries the revenue can be increased by 17.3% and equipping the SMES with hydrogen storage and participating in both markets leads to 36.9% increment in the revenue of the wind power plant.
Lab-Scale Investigation of the Integrated Backup/Storage System for Wind Turbines Using Alkaline Electrolyzer

The depletion of fossil fuel sources has encouraged the authorities to use renewable resources such as wind energy to generate electricity. A backup/storage system can improve the performance of wind turbines due to fluctuations in power demand. The novelty of this study is to utilize a hybrid system for a wind farm using the excess electricity generated by the wind turbines to produce hydrogen in an alkaline electrolyzer (AEL). The hydrogen storage tank stores the produced hydrogen and provides hydrogen to the proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to generate electricity once the power demand is higher than the electricity generated by the wind turbines. The goal of this study is to use the wind profile of a region in Iran namely the Cohen region to analyze the performance of the suggested integrated system on a micro scale. The output results of this study can be used as a case study for construction in the future based on the exact specification of NTK300 wind turbines. The results indicate that with the minimum power supply of 30 kW from the wind turbines on a lab scale the generated power by the PEMFC will be 1008 W while the maximum generated hydrogen will be 304 mL/h.
Thermodynamic Modelling and Optimisation of a Green Hydrogen-blended Syngas-fueled Integrated PV-SOFC System

Developing an effective energy transition roadmap is crucial in the face of global commitments to achieve net zero emissions. While renewable power generation systems are expanding challenges such as curtailments and grid constraints can lead to energy loss. To address this surplus electricity can be converted into green hydrogen serving as a key component in the energy transition. This research explores the use of renewable solar energy for powering a proton exchange membrane electrolyser to produce green hydrogen while a downdraft gasifier fed by municipal solid waste generates hydrogen-enriched syngas. The blended fuel is then used to feed a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The study investigates the impact of hydrogen content on the performance of the fuel cell-based power plant from thermodynamics and exergoeconomic perspectives. Multiobjective optimisation using a genetic algorithm identifies optimal operating conditions for the system. Results show that blending hydrogen with syngas increases combined heat and power efficiency by up to 3% but also raises remarkably the unit product cost and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore the optimal values for hydrogen content current density temperatures and other parameters are determined. These findings contribute to the design and operation of an efficient and sustainable energy generation system.
Evaluation of Significant Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Using Hydrogen Fuel in a LFG/Diesel RCCI Engine

The production of solid waste in human societies and the related environmental and global warming concerns are increasing. Extensive use of existing conventional diesel and dual-fuel engines also causes the production of high levels of greenhouse gases and aggravating the aforementioned concerns. Therefore the aim of this study is to reduce the greenhouse emissions in existing natural gas/diesel dual-fuel heavy-duty diesel engine. For this purpose changing the type of combustion to reactivity-controlled compression-ignition combustion and using landfill gas instead of natural gas in a dual-fuel engine were simultaneously implemented. Moreover a traditional method was used to evaluate the effect of variations in three important parameters on the engine's performance in order to determine the appropriate engine operating ranges. The simulation results indicate that although the consumption of 102000 cubic meters per year of natural gas in each cylinder is reduced only by replacing landfill gas the level of engine greenhouse gas emissions is too high compared to the relevant levels of emissions standards. Hence by keeping the total energy content of the fuels constant landfill gas enrichment with hydrogen was considered to reduce the engine emissions. The simulation results show that by increasing the hydrogen energy share up to 37% the engine load has the potential to be improved up to 7% without any exposure to diesel knock. However the downfall is the reduction in the gross indicated efficiency up to 3%. Meanwhile not only the fifth level of the European emission standard for nitrogen oxides and the sixth level of this standard for carbon monoxide can be achieved but it is also possible to overcome the high level of unburned methane as a drastic greenhouse gas and formaldehyde as a related carcinogenic species.
Synergistic Integration of Hydrogen Energy Economy with UK’s Sustainable Development Goals: A Holistic Approach to Enhancing Safety and Risk Mitigation

Hydrogen is gaining prominence as a sustainable energy source in the UK aligning with the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable development across diverse sectors. However a rigorous examination of the interplay between the hydrogen economy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is imperative. This study addresses this imperative by comprehensively assessing the risks associated with hydrogen production storage transportation and utilization. The overarching aim is to establish a robust framework that ensures the secure deployment and operation of hydrogen-based technologies within the UK’s sustainable development trajectory. Considering the unique characteristics of the UK’s energy landscape infrastructure and policy framework this paper presents practical and viable recommendations to facilitate the safe and effective integration of hydrogen energy into the UK’s SDGs. To facilitate sophisticated decision making it proposes using an advanced Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) tool incorporating regret theory and a 2-tuple spherical linguistic environment. This tool enables a nuanced decision-making process yielding actionable insights. The analysis reveals that Incident Reporting and Learning Robust Regulatory Framework Safety Standards and Codes are pivotal safety factors. At the same time Clean Energy Access Climate Action and Industry Innovation and Infrastructure are identified as the most influential SDGs. This information provides valuable guidance for policymakers industry stakeholders and regulators. It empowers them to make well-informed strategic decisions and prioritize actions that bolster safety and sustainable development as the UK transitions towards a hydrogen-based energy system. Moreover the findings underscore the varying degrees of prominence among different SDGs. Notably SDG 13 (Climate Action) exhibits relatively lower overall distinction at 0.0066 and a Relation value of 0.0512 albeit with a substantial impact. In contrast SDG 7 (Clean Energy Access) and SDG 9 (Industry Innovation and Infrastructure) demonstrate moderate prominence levels (0.0559 and 0.0498 respectively) each with its unique influence emphasizing their critical roles in the UK’s pursuit of a sustainable hydrogen-based energy future.
Technical, Economic, Carbon Footprint Assessment, and Prioritizing Stations for Hydrogen Production Using Wind Energy: A Case Study

While Afghanistan’s power sector is almost completely dependent on fossil fuels it still cannot meet the rising power demand of this country. Deploying a combination of renewable energy systems with hydrogen production as the excess energy storage mechanism could be a sustainable long-term approach for addressing some of the energy problems of Afghanistan. Since Badakhshan is known to have a higher average wind speed than any other Afghan province in this study a technical economic and carbon footprint assessment was performed to investigate the potential for wind power and hydrogen production in this province. Wind data of four stations in Badakhshan were used for technical assessment for three heights of 10 30 and 40 m using the Weibull probability distribution function. This technical assessment was expanded by estimating the energy pattern factor probability of wind speeds greater than 5 m/s wind power density annual power output and annual hydrogen output. This was followed by an economic assessment which involved computing the Leveled Cost Of Energy (LCOE) the Leveled Cost Of Hydrogen (LCOH) and the payback period and finally an carbon footprint assessment which involved estimating the consequent CO2 reduction in two scenarios. The assessments were performed for 22 turbines manufactured by reputable companies with capacities ranging from 600 kW to 2.3 MW. The results showed that the entire Badakhshan province and especially Qal’eh-ye Panjeh and Fayazabad have excellent potentials in terms of wind energy that can be harvested for wind power and hydrogen production. Also wind power generation in this province will be highly cost-effective as the produced electricity will cost about one-third of the price of electricity supplied by the government. For better evaluation the GIS maps of wind power and hydrogen outputs were prepared using the IDW method. These maps showed that the eastern and northeastern parts of Badakhshan province have higher wind power-hydrogen production potentials. The results of ranking the stations with SWARA-EDAS hybrid MCDM methods showed that Qal’eh-ye Panjeh station was the best location to produce hydrogen from wind energy.
An On-Board Pure H2 Supply System Based on A Membrane Reactor for A Fuel Cell Vehicle: A Theoretical Study

In this novel conceptual fuel cell vehicle (FCV) an on-board CH4 steam reforming (MSR) membrane reformer (MR) is considered to generate pure H2 for supplying a Fuel Cell (FC) system as an alternative to the conventional automobile engines. Two on-board tanks are forecast to store CH4 and water useful for feeding both a combustion chamber (designed to provide the heat required by the system) and a multi tubes Pd-Ag MR useful to generate pure H2 via methane steam reforming (MSR) reaction. The pure H2 stream is hence supplied to the FC. The flue gas stream coming out from the combustion chamber is used to preheat the MR feed stream by two heat exchangers and one evaporator. Then this theoretical work demonstrates by a 1-D model the feasibility of the MR based system in order to generate 5 kg/day of pure H2 required by the FC system for cruising a vehicle for around 500 km. The calculated CH4 and water consumptions were 50 and 70 kg respectively per 1 kg of pure H2. The on-board MR based FCV presents lower CO2 emission rates than a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle also resulting in a more environmentally friendly solution.

The concerns regarding the consumption of traditional fuels such as oil and coal have driven the proposals for several cleaner alternatives in recent years. Hydrogen energy is one of the most attractive alternatives for the currently used fossil fuels with several superiorities such as zero-emission and high energy content. Hydrogen has numerous advantages compared to conventional fuels and as such has been employed in gas turbines (GTs) in recent years. The main benefit of using hydrogen in power generation with the GT is the considerably lower emission of greenhouse gases. The performance of the GTs using hydrogen as a fuel is influenced by several factors including the performance of the components the operating condition ambient condition etc. These factors have been investigated by several scholars and scientists in this field. In this article studies on hydrogen-fired GTs are reviewed and their results are discussed. Furthermore some recommendations are proposed for the upcoming works in this field.
Solid Air Hydrogen Liquefaction, the Missing Link of the Hydrogen Economy

The most challenging aspect of developing a green hydrogen economy is long-distance oceanic transportation. Hydrogen liquefaction is a transportation alternative. However the cost and energy consumption for liquefaction is currently prohibitively high creating a major barrier to hydrogen supply chains. This paper proposes using solid nitrogen or oxygen as a medium for recycling cold energy across the hydrogen liquefaction supply chain. When a liquid hydrogen (LH2) carrier reaches its destination the regasification process of the hydrogen produces solid nitrogen or oxygen. The solid nitrogen or oxygen is then transported in the LH2 carrier back to the hydrogen liquefaction facility and used to reduce the energy consumption cooling gaseous hydrogen. As a result the energy required to liquefy hydrogen can be reduced by 25.4% using N2 and 27.3% using O2. Solid air hydrogen liquefaction (SAHL) can be the missing link for implementing a global hydrogen economy.
