Current Research Progress in Magnesium Borohydride for Hydrogen Storage (A review)

Hydrogen storage in solid-state materials is believed to be a most promising hydrogen-storage technology for high efficiency low risk and low cost. Mg(BH4)2 is regarded as one of most potential materials in hydrogen storage areas in view of its high hydrogen capacities (14.9 wt% and 145–147 kg cm3 ). However the drawbacks of Mg(BH4)2 including high desorption temperatures (about 250 C–580 C) sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility make it difficult to be used for onboard hydrogen storage of fuel cell vehicles. A lot of researches on improving the dehydrogenation reaction thermodynamics and kinetics have been done mainly including: additives or catalysts doping nanoconfining Mg(BH4)2 in nanoporous hosts forming reactive hydrides systems multi-cation/anion composites or other derivatives of Mg(BH4)2. Some favorable results have been obtained. This review provides an overview of current research progress in magnesium borohydride including: synthesis methods crystal structures decomposition behaviors as well as emphasized performance improvements for hydrogen storage.
Influence of Hydrogen Environment on Fatigue Fracture Morphology of X80 Pipeline Steel

The rapid development of hydrogen energy requires the use of natural gas infrastructure for hydrogen transportation. It is very important to study hydrogen-added natural gas transportation technology which is a key way to rapidly develop coal-based gas and renewable energy. This study aims to study the influence of X80 pipeline steel's fatigue performance in hydrogen environment and perform fatigue tests on notched round rod specimens under different hydrogen concentration. The experimental results show that hydrogen seriously affects the fatigue life of pipeline steel. After reaching a certain hydrogen concentration as the hydrogen concentration continues to increase the fatigue life decreases gradually. Combined with SEM analysis of fracture morphology the decrease in the size and density of the dimples reduces the displacement amplitude while the increase in the planar area increases the displacement during fatigue fracture due to accelerated crack propagation. From this study we can know the influence of hydrogen concentration on the fracture morphology of pipeline steel which provides an understanding of the effect of hydrogen on fatigue fracture morphology and a broader safety analysis.
Hydrogen Sensing Properties of UV Enhanced Pd-SnO2 Nano-Spherical Composites at Low Temperature

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) is promising in developing hydrogen detectors. However typical MOS materials usually work between 200-500°C which not only restricts their application in flammable and explosive gases detection but also weakens sensor stability and causes high power consumption. This paper studies the sensing properties of UV enhanced Pd-SnO2 nano-spherical composites at 80-360 ℃. In the experiment Pd of different molar ratios (0.5 2.5 5.0 10.0) was doped into uniform spherical SnO2 nanoparticles by a hydrothermal synthesis method. A xenon lamp with a filter was used as the ultraviolet excitation light source to examine the response of the spherical Pd- SnO2 nanocomposite to 50-1000 ppm H2 gas. The influence of different intensities of ultraviolet light on the gas-sensing properties of composite materials compared with dark condition was analyzed. The experiments show that the conductivity of the composites can be greatly stabilized and the thermal excitation temperature can be reduced to 180 ℃ under the effect of UV enhancement. A rapid response (4.4/ 17.4 s) to 200 ppm of H2 at 330 °C can be achieved by the Pd-SnO2 nanocomposites with UV assistance. The mechanism may be attributed to light motivated electron-hole pairs due to built-in electric fields under UV light illumination which can be captured by target gases and lead to UV controlled gas sensing performance. Catalytic active sites of hydrogen are provided on the surface of the mixed material by Pd. The results in this study can be helpful in reducing the response temperature of MOS materials and improving the performance of hydrogen detectors."
The Influence of Grain Boundary and Hydrogen on the Indetation of Bi-crystal Nickel

Three different types of symmetrical tilt grain boundaries Ȉ3 Ȉ11 and Ȉ27 were constructed to study the dislocation behavior under the indentation on bi-crystal nickel. After hydrogen charging the number of hydrogen atoms in the Ȉ3 sample is the smallest and gradually increases in Ȉ11 and Ȉ27 samples. The force-displacement curve of indentation shows that the deformation resistance of the Ȉ3 sample is significantly higher than that of Ȉ11 and Ȉ27 samples. With the presence of grain boundaries the deformation resistance of Ȉ11 and Ȉ27 samples is significantly improved while the deformation resistance of the Ȉ3 VDPSOH is weakened. The indentation depth during the formation of dislocations in single crystals is significantly greater than that of bi-crystals. Grain boundaries slow down the dislocation propagation speed. Compared with the bi-crystals without hydrogen the presence of hydrogen reduces the deformation resistance and accelerates the dislocation propagation.
Research on Multi-Objective Energy Management of Renewable Energy Power Plant with Electrolytic Hydrogen Production

This study focuses on a renewable energy power plant equipped with electrolytic hydrogen production system aiming to optimize energy management to smooth renewable energy generation fluctuations participate in peak shaving auxiliary services and increase the absorption space for renewable energy. A multi-objective energy management model and corresponding algorithms were developed incorporating considerations of cost pricing and the operational constraints of a renewable energy generating unit and electrolytic hydrogen production system. By introducing uncertain programming the uncertainty issues associated with renewable energy output were successfully addressed and an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm was employed for solving. A simulation system established on the Matlab platform verified the effectiveness of the model and algorithms demonstrating that this approach can effectively meet the demands of the electricity market while enhancing the utilization rate of renewable energies.
A Review on Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Production from Ammonia Decomposition

Ammonia (NH3 ) is regarded as a promising medium of hydrogen storage due to its large hydrogen storage density decent performance on safety and moderate storage conditions. On the user side NH3 is generally required to decompose into hydrogen for utilization in fuel cells and therefore it is vital for the NH3 -based hydrogen storage technology development to study NH3 decomposition processes and improve the decomposition efficiency. Numerical simulation has become a powerful tool for analyzing the NH3 decomposition processes since it can provide a revealing insight into the heat and mass transfer phenomena and substantial guidance on further improving the decomposition efficiency. This paper reviews the numerical simulations of NH3 decomposition in various application scenarios including NH3 decomposition in microreactors coupled combustion chemical reactors solid oxide fuel cells and membrane reactors. The models of NH3 decomposition reactions in various scenarios and the heat and mass transport in the reactor are elaborated. The effects of reactor structure and operating conditions on the performance of NH3 decomposition reactor are analyzed. It can be found that NH3 decomposition in microchannel reactors is not limited by heat and mass transfer and NH3 conversion can be improved by using membrane reactors under the same conditions. Finally research prospects and opportunities are proposed in terms of model development and reactor performance improvement for NH3 decomposition.
Investigation on the Changes of Pressure and Temperature in High Pressure Filling of Hydrogen Storage Tank

Hydrogen as fuel has been considered as a feasible energy carry and which offers a clean and efficient alternative for transportation. During the high pressure filling the temperature in the hydrogen storage tank (HST) may rise rapidly due to the hydrogen compression. The high temperature may lead to safety problem. Thus for fast and safely refueling the hydrogen several key factors need to be considered. In the present study by the thermodynamics theories a mathematical model is established to simulate and analyze the high pressure filling process of the storage tank for the hydrogen station. In the analysis the physical parameters of normal hydrogen are introduced to make the simulation close to the actual process. By the numerical simulation for 50 MPa compressed hydrogen tank the temperature and pressure trends during filling are obtained. The simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the theoretically calculated ones for adiabatic conditions and the simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the simulation ones for adiabatic conditions. Then the influence of working pressure initial temperature mass flow rate initial pressure and inlet temperature on the temperature rise were analyzed. This study provides a theoretical research basis for high pressure hydrogen energy storage and hydrogenation technology.
Cradle-grave Energy Consumption, Greenhouse Gas and Acidification Emissions in Current and Future Fuel Cell Vehicles: Study Based on Five Hydrogen Production Methods in China

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are regarded as a promising solution to the problems of energy security and environmental pollution. However the technology is under development and the hydrogen consumption is uncertain. The quantitative evaluation of life cycle energy consumption pollution emissions of current and future FCVs in China involves complex processes and parameters. Therefore this study addresses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of FCV and focuses on the key parameters of FCV production and different hydrogen production methods which include steam methane reforming catalysis decomposition methanol steam reforming electrolysis–photovoltaic (PV) and electrolysis Chinese electricity grid mix (CN). Sensitivity analysis of bipolar plate glider mass power density fuel cell system efficiency and energy control strategy are performed whilst accounting for different assumption scenarios. The results show that all impact assessment indicators will decrease by 28.8– 44.3% under the 2030 positive scenario for the production of FCVs. For cradle-grave FCVs the use of hydrogen from electrolysis operated with photovoltaic power reduces global warming potential (GWP) by almost 76.4% relative to steam methane reforming. By contrast the use of hydrogen from electrolysis operated with the Chinese electricity grid mix results in an increase in GWP of almost 158.3%.
Influence of Air Distribution on Combustion Characteristics of a Micro Gas Turbine Fuelled by Hydrogen-doped Methane

Adding hydrogen to the fuel can change the combustion characteristics and greatly improve the pollutants emission for the gas turbine. The numerical method was adopted to study the combustion process in a counter-flow combustor of a 100 kW micro gas turbine using methane doped by hydrogen and various distribution schemes of air flow. The combustion characteristics and pollutant emissions were explored to ascertain the influence of air distribution based on solving the validated models. It was shown that as the amount of premixed air increased in the swirling gas the range of the recirculation region became larger and the range of the high-temperature zone in the combustion chamber gradually enlarged. When the amount of premixed air was 30% the outlet temperature distribution of the combustor was excellent and the average temperature was 1172 K. Moreover the concentration of NOX gradually increased and reached a maximum value of 23.46 ppm (@15% O2) as the premixed air increased in the range of the ratio less than 40%. It was reduced to 0.717 ppm (@15% O2) when the amount of premixed air increased to 50%. These findings may support the running of the micro gas turbine using the hybrid fuel of hydrogen and methane.
State-Aware Energy Management Strategy for Marine Multi-Stack Hybrid Energy Storage Systems Considering Fuel Cell Health

To address the limitations of conventional single-stack fuel cell hybrid systems using equivalent hydrogen consumption strategies this study proposes a multi-stack energy management strategy incorporating fuel cell health degradation. Leveraging a fuel cell efficiency decay model and lithium-ion battery cycle life assessment power distribution is reformulated as an equivalent hydrogen consumption optimization problem with stack degradation constraints. A hybrid Genetic Algorithm–Particle Swarm Optimization (GAPSO) approach achieves global optimization. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with the Frequency Decoupling (FD) method the GA-PSO strategy reduces hydrogen consumption by 7.03 g and operational costs by 4.78%; compared with the traditional Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm it reduces hydrogen consumption by 3.61 g per operational cycle and decreases operational costs by 2.66%. This strategy ensures stable operation of the marine power system while providing an economically viable solution for hybrid-powered vessels.
Recent Development of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies: A Review

Hydrogen has emerged as a new energy vector beyond its usual role as an industrial feedstock primarily for the production of ammonia methanol and petroleum refining. In addition to environmental sustainability issues energy-scarce developed countries such as Japan and Korea are also facing an energy security issue and hydrogen or hydrogen carriers such as ammonia and methylcyclohexane seem to be options to address these long-term energy availability issues. China has been eagerly developing renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure to meet their sustainability goals and the growing energy demand. In this review we focus on hydrogen electrification through proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) which are widely believed to be commercially suitable for automotive applications particularly for vehicles requiring minimal hydrogen infrastructure support such as fleets of taxies buses and logistic vehicles. This review covers all the key components of PEMFCs thermal and water management and related characterization techniques. A special consideration of PEMFCs in automotive applications is the highlight of this work leading to the infrastructure development for hydrogen generation storage and transportation. Furthermore national strategies toward the use of hydrogen are reviewed thereby setting the rationale for the hydrogen economy.
Hydrothermal Conversion of Lignin and Black Liquor for Phenolics with the Aids of Alkali and Hydrogen Donor

The potentials of phenolic productions from lignin and black liquor (BL) via hydrothermal technology with the aids of alkalis and hydrogen donors were investigated by conducting batch experiments in micro-tube reactors with 300 °C sub-critical water as the solvent. The results showed that all the employed alkalis improved lignin degradation and thus phenolics production and the strong alkalis additionally manifested deoxygenation to produce more phenolics free of methoxyl group(s). Relatively hydrogen donors more visibly facilitated phenolics formation. Combination of strong alkali and hydrogen donors exhibited synergistically positive effects on producing phenolics (their total yield reaching 22 wt%) with high selectivities to phenolics among which the yields of catechol and cresols respectively peaked 16 and 3.5 wt%. BL could be hydrothermally converted into phenolics at high yields (approaching 10 wt% with the yields of catechol and cresols of about 4 and 2 wt% respectively) with the aids of its inherent alkali and hydrogen donors justifying its cascade utilization.
A Quantitative Study of Policy-driven Changes and Forecasts in the Development of the Hydrogen Transportation Industry

Through data mining and analysis of the word frequency and occurrence position of industrial policy keywords the main policy parameters affecting industrial development are determined and the functional relationship between industrial policy and industrial development is obtained through multi-parameter non-linear regression: Yit−1 (y1 y2 y3 y4 y5) = β1it X1 + β2it ln X2 + β3it ln X3 + β4it X1it ∗ ln X3 + εit . The time series function of the industrial development index: Y (t) = 0.174 ∗ e (0.256∗t) is established and the industrial development under the influence of next year’s policy is predicted. It is concluded from the mathematical expression of the statistical model that there is a certain coupling effect between different policies and that industrial development is influenced by the joint effect on the parent and sub-industries. This ultimately proves that there is a clear correlation between policy and industry development.
Using Multicriteria Decision Making to Evaluate the Risk of Hydrogen Energy Storage and Transportation in Cities

Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly source of renewable energy. Energy generation from hydrogen has not yet been widely commercialized due to issues related to risk management in its storage and transportation. In this paper the authors propose a hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM)-based method to manage the risks involved in the storage and transportation of hydrogen (RSTH). First we identified the key points of the RSTH by examining the relevant literature and soliciting the opinions of experts and used this to build a prototype of its decision structure. Second we developed a hybrid MCDM approach called the D-ANP that combined the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMENTEL) with the analytic network process (ANP) to obtain the weight of each point of risk. Third we used fuzzy evaluation to assess the level of the RSTH for Beijing China where energy generation using hydrogen is rapidly advancing. The results showed that the skills of the personnel constituted the most important risk-related factor and environmental volatility and the effectiveness of feedback were root factors. These three factors had an important impact on other factors influencing the risk of energy generation from hydrogen. Training and technical assistance can be used to mitigate the risks arising due to differences in the skills of personnel. An appropriate logistics network and segmented transportation for energy derived from hydrogen should be implemented to reduce environmental volatility and integrated supply chain management can help make the relevant feedback more effective.
Research on High-Pressure Hydrogen Pre-Cooling Based on CFD Technology in Fast Filling Process

In the fast filling process in order to control the temperature of the vehicle-mounted storage tank not to exceed the upper limit of 85 ◦C it is an effective method to add a hydrogen pre-cooling system upstream of the hydrogenation machine. In this paper Fluent is used to simulate the heat transfer process of high-pressure hydrogen in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and the phase change process of refrigerant R23. The accuracy of the model is proven by a comparison with the data in the references. Using this model the temperature field and gas volume fraction in the heat transfer process are obtained which is helpful to analyze the heat transfer mechanism. At the same time the influence of hydrogen inlet temperature hydrogen inlet pressure and refrigerant flow rate on the refrigeration performance was studied. The current work shows that the model can be used to determine the best working parameters in the pre-cooling process and reduce the operating cost of the hydrogen refueling station.
Hydrogen-electricity Hybrid Energy Pipelines for Railway Transportation: Design and Economic Evaluation

With the decarbonization and electrification of modern railway transportation the demand for both the highcapacity electrical energy and hydrogen fuel energy is increasingly high. A novel scheme was proposed from liquid hydrogen production by surplus wind and solar energy to liquid hydrogen-electricity hybrid energy transmission for railway transportation. The 100 MW hybrid energy transmission pipeline was designed with the 10 kA/1.5 kV superconducting DC cable for electricity and cryogenic layers for liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen showing strong capability in transmitting “electricity + cold energy + chemical energy” simultaneously. Economic evaluation was performed with respect to the energy equipment capacity and costs with sensitivity and profitability analysis. With the discount rate 8% the dynamic payback period of the hybrid energy pipeline was 7.1 years. Results indicated that the shortest dynamic payback period of the hybrid energy pipeline was 4.8 years with the maximum transmission distance 93 km. Overall this article shows the novel concept and design of liquid hydrogen-electricity hybrid energy pipelines and proves the technical and economic feasibilities for future bulk hybrid energy transmission for railway transportation.

Hydrogen Diffusion and Its Effect on Hydrogen Embrittlement in DP Steels with Different Martensite Content

The hydrogen diffusion behavior and hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of dual phase (DP) steels with different martensite content were investigated using the slow strain-rate tensile test and hydrogen permeation measurement. Results showed that a logarithmic relationship was established between the hydrogen embrittlement index (IHE) and the effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient (Deff). When the martensite content is low ferrite/ martensite interface behaves as the main trap that captures the hydrogen atoms. Also when the Deff decreases IHE increases with increasing martensite content. However when the martensite content reaches approximately 68.3% the martensite grains start to form a continuous network Deff reaches a plateau and IHE continues to increase. This is mainly related to the reduction of carbon content in martensite and the length of ferrite/martensite interface which promotes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in martensite and the aggregation of hydrogen atoms at the ferrite/martensite interface. Finally a model describing the mechanism of microstructure-driven hydrogen diffusion with different martensite distribution was established.
From Renewable Energy to Sustainable Protein Sources: Advancement, Challenges, and Future Roadmaps

The concerns over food security and protein scarcity driven by population increase and higher standards of living have pushed scientists toward finding new protein sources. A considerable proportion of resources and agricultural lands are currently dedicated to proteinaceous feed production to raise livestock and poultry for human consumption. The 1st generation of microbial protein (MP) came into the market as land-independent proteinaceous feed for livestock and aquaculture. However MP may be a less sustainable alternative to conventional feeds such as soybean meal and fishmeal because this technology currently requires natural gas and synthetic chemicals. These challenges have directed researchers toward the production of 2nd generation MP by integrating renewable energies anaerobic digestion nutrient recovery biogas cleaning and upgrading carbon-capture technologies and fermentation. The fermentation of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) i.e. two protein rich microorganisms has shown a great potential on the one hand to upcycle effluents from anaerobic digestion into protein rich biomass and on the other hand to be coupled to renewable energy systems under the concept of Power-to-X. This work compares various production routes for 2nd generation MP by reviewing the latest studies conducted in this context and introducing the state-of-the-art technologies hoping that the findings can accelerate and facilitate upscaling of MP production. The results show that 2nd generation MP depends on the expansion of renewable energies. In countries with high penetration of renewable electricity such as Nordic countries off-peak surplus electricity can be used within MP-industry by supplying electrolytic H2 which is the driving factor for both MOB and HOB-based MP production. However nutrient recovery technologies are the heart of the 2nd generation MP industry as they determine the process costs and quality of the final product. Although huge attempts have been made to date in this context some bottlenecks such as immature nutrient recovery technologies less efficient fermenters with insufficient gas-to-liquid transfer and costly electrolytic hydrogen production and storage have hindered the scale up of MP production. Furthermore further research into techno-economic feasibility and life cycle assessment (LCA) of coupled technologies is still needed to identify key points for improvement and thereby secure a sustainable production system.
Investigation of Hydrogen Leaks from Double Ferrule Fittings

The use of hydrogen is expected to increase rapidly in the future. Leakage of hydrogen pipework are the main forms of safety problems in hydrogen utilization. In this paper a numerical model of hydrogen leakage and diffusion in pipe joints was established. The Schlieren + high-speed camera is used in experiments to observe the leakage of hydrogen in the pipe joints. In addition the shape and size of the scratches in the tube were statistically analyzed. Finally the leakage characteristics of double ferrule joints with scratches are experimentally analyzed. For the two scratch sizes the critical pressure values for the vortex transition are 0.2 MPa and 0.03 MPa. Through our experimental process some practical experience and suggestions are given.
