Techno-economic Analysis of On-site Blue Hydrogen Production Based on Vacuum Pressure Adsorption: Practical Application to Real-world Hydrogen Refueling Stations

Although climate change can be efficiently curbed by shifting to low-carbon (blue) hydrogen as an energy carrier to achieve carbon neutrality current hydrogen production mainly proceeds via the gray pathway i.e. generates large amounts of CO2 as a byproduct. To address the need for cleaner hydrogen production we herein propose novel CO2 capture processes based on the integration of vacuum pressure swing adsorption into a gray hydrogen production process and perform retrofitting to a blue hydrogen production process for on-site hydrogen refueling stations. Techno-economic analysis reveals that the implementation of the proposed capture processes allows one to significantly reduce CO2 emission while preserving thermal efficiency and the economic feasibility of this implementation in different scenarios is determined by computing the levelized cost of hydrogen. As a result blue hydrogen is shown to hold great promise for the realization of sustainable energy usage and the net-zero transition.
Spatiotemporal Analysis of Hydrogen Requirement to Minimize Seasonal Variability in Future Solar and Wind Energy in South Korea

Renewable energy supply is essential for carbon neutrality; however technologies aiming to optimally utilize renewable energy sources remain insufficient. Seasonal variability in renewable energy is a key issue which many studies have attempted to overcome through operating systems and energy storage. Currently hydrogen is the only technology that can solve this seasonal storage problem. In this study the amount of hydrogen required to circumvent the seasonal variability in renewable energy supply in Korea was quantified. Spatiotemporal analysis was conducted using renewable energy resource maps and power loads. It was predicted that 50% of the total power demand in the future will be met using solar and wind power and a scenario was established based on the solar-to-wind ratio. It was found that the required hydrogen production differed by approximately four-times depending on the scenarios highlighting the importance of supplying renewable energy at an appropriate ratio. Spatially wind power was observed to be unsuitable for the physical transport of hydrogen because it has a high potential at mountain peaks and islands. The results of this study are expected to aid future hydrogen research and solve renewable energy variability problems.
Hydrogen Production in Methane Decomposition Reactor Using Solar Thermal Energy

This study investigates the decomposition of methane using solar thermal energy as a heat source. Instead of the direct thermal decomposition of the methane at a temperature of 1200 ◦C or higher a catalyst coated with carbon black on a metal foam was used to lower the temperature and activation energy required for the reaction and to increase the yield. To supply solar heat during the reaction a reactor suitable for a solar concentrating system was developed. In this process a direct heating type reactor with quartz was initially applied and a number of problems were identified. An indirect heating type reactor with an insulated cavity and a rotating part was subsequently developed followed by a thermal barrier coating application. Methane decomposition experiments were conducted in a 40 kW solar furnace at the Korea Institute of Energy Research. Conversion rates of 96.7% and 82.6% were achieved when the methane flow rate was 20 L/min and 40 L/min respectively.
Progress and Challenges on the Thermal Management of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Technologies: Fuel Cells, Electrolysers, and Supercapacitors

It is now well established that electrochemical systems can optimally perform only within a narrow range of temperature. Exposure to temperatures outside this range adversely affects the performance and lifetime of these systems. As a result thermal management is an essential consideration during the design and operation of electrochemical equipment and can heavily influence the success of electrochemical energy technologies. Recently significant attempts have been placed on the maturity of cooling technologies for electrochemical devices. Nonetheless the existing reviews on the subject have been primarily focused on battery cooling. Conversely heat transfer in other electrochemical systems commonly used for energy conversion and storage has not been subjected to critical reviews. To address this issue the current study gives an overview of the progress and challenges on the thermal management of different electrochemical energy devices including fuel cells electrolysers and supercapacitors. The physicochemical mechanisms of heat generation in these electrochemical devices are discussed in-depth. Physics of the heat transfer techniques currently employed for temperature control are then exposed and some directions for future studies are provided.
Development and Future Scope of Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Systems

This review study attempts to summarize available energy storage systems in order to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. Inefficient energy storage systems have been shown to function as a deterrent to the implementation of sustainable development. It is therefore critical to conduct a thorough examination of existing and soon-to-be-developed energy storage technologies. Various scholarly publications in the fields of energy storage systems and renewable energy have been reviewed and summarized. Data and themes have been further highlighted with the use of appropriate figures and tables. Case studies and examples of major projects have also been researched to gain a better understanding of the energy storage technologies evaluated. An insightful analysis of present energy storage technologies and other possible innovations have been discovered with the use of suitable literature review and illustrations. This report also emphasizes the critical necessity for an efficient storage system if renewable energy is to be widely adopted.
Research and Development Investment and Collaboration Framework for the Hydrogen Economy in South Korea

South Korea developed its hydrogen strategies to achieve carbon neutrality and dominate the hydrogen economy amidst and with the impetus of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The government strives toward the goal via continuous investment in green hydrogen technologies as well as strategic collaborations. To facilitate the transition into the hydrogen economy this study presents a research and development (R&D) investment and collaboration framework as a national strategy. The framework offers abundant information to elucidate the technology R&D spectrum and regional dimensions of the strategy. Furthermore the proposed framework was applied to the Korean hydrogen economy comprising 955 nationally funded projects worth USD 565.7 million. The statuses and trends of the government’s investment in nationally funded research projects are illustrated with regard to the value chains of the hydrogen economies of 16 regions as well as nine technology clusters relating to the hydrogen economy thereby determining the research organizations that played crucial roles in each cluster of the 16 regions between 2015 and 2020. The results indicate that the research organizations in Daejeon acquired the highest government R&D funding in many hydrogen-economy-related research fields and that an R&D spectrum-based research/strategic collaboration is required to accomplish specialized complexes in the regions.
Numerical Study of the Action of Convection on the Volume and Length of the Flammable Zone Formed by Hydrogen Emissions from the Vent Masts Installed on an International Ship

International ships carrying liquefied fuel are strongly recommended to install vent masts to control the pressure of cargo tanks in the event of an emergency. However the gas emitted from a vent mast may be hazardous for the crew of the ship. In the present study the volume and length of the flammable zone (FZ) created by the emitted gas above the ship was examined. Various scenarios comprising four parameters namely relative wind speed arrangement of vent masts combination of emissions among four vent masts and direction of emission from the vent-mast outlet were considered. The results showed that the convection acts on the volume and length of an FZ. The volume of an FZ increases when there is a reduction in convection reaching the FZ and when strong convection brings hydrogen from a nearby FZ. The length of the FZ is also related to convection. An FZ is elongated if the center of a vortex is located inside the FZ because this vortex traps hydrogen inside the FZ. The length of an FZ decreases if the center of the vortex is located outside the FZ as such a vortex brings more fresh air into the FZ.
Complex Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage – New Perspectives

Since the 1970s hydrogen has been considered as a possible energy carrier for the storage of renewable energy. The main focus has been on addressing the ultimate challenge: developing an environmentally friendly successor for gasoline. This very ambitious goal has not yet been fully reached as discussed in this review but a range of new lightweight hydrogen-containing materials has been discovered with fascinating properties. State-of-the-art and future perspectives for hydrogen-containing solids will be discussed with a focus on metal borohydrides which reveal significant structural flexibility and may have a range of new interesting properties combined with very high hydrogen densities.
Safe Ventilation Methods against Leaks in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Rooms in Homes

Hydrogen which has a high energy density and does not emit pollutants is considered an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. Herein we report an experimental study on hydrogen leaks and ventilation methods for preventing damage caused by leaks from hydrogen fuel cell rooms in homes among various uses of hydrogen. This experiment was conducted in a temporary space with a volume of 11.484 m3 . The supplied pressure leak-hole size and leakage amount were adjusted as the experimental conditions. The resulting hydrogen concentrations which changed according to the operation of the ventilation openings ventilation fan and supplied shutoff valve were measured. The experimental results showed that the reductions in the hydrogen concentration due to the shutoff valve were the most significant. The maximum hydrogen concentration could be reduced by 80% or more if it is 100 times that of the leakage volume or higher. The shutoff valve ventilation fan and ventilation openings were required to reduce the concentrations of the fuel cell room hydrogen in a spatially uniform manner. Although the hydrogen concentration in a small hydrogen fuel cell room for home use can rapidly increase a rapid reduction in the concentration of hydrogen with an appropriate ventilation system has been experimentally proven.
Estimation of Liquid Hydrogen Fuels in Aviation

As the demand for alternative fuels to solve environmental problems increases worldwide due to the greenhouse gas problem this study predicted the demand for liquid hydrogen fuel in aviation to achieve ‘zero‐emission flight’. The liquid hydrogen fuel models of an aircraft and all aviation sectors were produced based on the prediction of aviation fleet growth through the classification of currently operated aircraft. Using these models the required amount of liquid hydrogen fuel and the total cost of liquid hydrogen were also calculated when various environmental regulations were satisfied. As a result it was found to be necessary to convert approximately 66% to 100% of all aircraft from existing aircraft to liquid hydrogen aircraft in 2050 according to regulations. The annual liquid hydrogen cost was 4.7–5.2 times higher in the beginning due to the high production cost but after 2030 it will be maintained at almost the same price and it was found that the cost was rather low compared to jet fuel.
Machine Learning-based Energy Optimization for On-site SMR Hydrogen Production

The production and application of hydrogen an environmentally friendly energy source have been attracting increasing interest of late. Although steam methane reforming (SMR) method is used to produce hydrogen it is difficult to build a high-fidelity model because the existing equation-oriented theoretical model cannot be used to clearly understand the heat-transfer phenomenon of a complicated reforming reactor. Herein we developed an artificial neural network (ANN)-based data-driven model using 485710 actual operation datasets for optimizing the SMR process. Data preprocessing including outlier removal and noise filtering was performed to improve the data quality. A model with high accuracy (average R2 = 0.9987) was developed which can predict six variables through hyperparameter tuning of a neural network model as follows: syngas flow rate; CO CO2 CH4 and H2 compositions; and steam temperature. During optimization the search spaces for nine operating variables namely the natural gas flow rate for the feed and fuel hydrogen flow rate for desulfurization water flow rate and temperature air flow rate SMR inlet temperature and pressure and low-temperature shift (LTS) inlet temperature were defined and applied to the developed model for predicting the thermal efficiencies for 387420489 cases. Subsequently five constraints were established to consider the feasibility of the process and the decision variables with the highest process thermal efficiency were determined. The process operating conditions showed a thermal efficiency of 85.6%.
Russia’s Policy Transition to a Hydrogen Economy and the Implications of South Korea–Russia Cooperation

Leading countries are developing clean energy to replace fossil fuels. In this context Russia is changing its energy policy towards fostering new energy resources such as hydrogen and helium. Hydrogen will not only contribute to Russia’s financial revenue by replacing natural gas but will also provide a basis for it to maintain its dominance over the international energy market by pioneering new energy markets. Russia is aiming to produce more than two million tons of hydrogen fuel for export to Europe and Asia by 2035. However it is facing many challenges including developing hydrogen fuel storage systems acquiring the technology required for exporting hydrogen and building trust in the fuel market. Meanwhile South Korea has a foundation for developing a hydrogen industry as it has the highest capacity in the world to produce fuel cells and the ability to manufacture LNG: (liquefied natural gas) carriers. Therefore South Korea and Russia have sufficient potential to create a new complementary and reciprocal cooperation model in the hydrogen fuel field. This study examines the present and future of Russia’s energy policy in this area as well as discusses South Korea and Russia’s cooperation plans in the hydrogen fuel sector and the related implications.
Hydrogen Stress Cracking Behaviour in Dissimilar Welded Joints of Duplex Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel

As the need for duplex stainless steel (DSS) increases it is necessary to evaluate hydrogen stress cracking (HSC) in dissimilar welded joints (WJs) of DSS and carbon steel. This study aims to investigate the effect of the weld microstructure on the HSC behaviour of dissimilar gas-tungsten arc welds of DSS and carbon steel. In situ slow-strain rate testing (SSRT) with hydrogen charging was conducted for transverse WJs which fractured in the softened heat-affected zone of the carbon steel under hydrogen-free conditions. However HSC occurred at the martensite band and the interface of the austenite and martensite bands in the type-II boundary. The band acted as an HSC initiation site because of the presence of a large amount of trapped hydrogen and a high strain concentration during the SSRT with hydrogen charging. Even though some weld microstructures such as the austenite and martensite bands in type-II boundaries were harmless under normal hydrogen-free conditions they had a negative effect in a hydrogen atmosphere resulting in the premature rupture of the weld. Eventually a premature fracture occurred during the in situ SSRT in the type-II boundary because of the hydrogen-enhanced strain-induced void (HESIV) and hydrogen-enhanced localised plasticity (HELP) mechanisms.
A Review on Industrial Perspectives and Challenges on Material, Manufacturing, Design and Development of Compressed Hydrogen Storage Tanks for the Transportation Sector

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is securing a place in the future of advanced mobility and the energy revolution as engineers explore multiple paths in the quest for decarbonization. The feasibility of hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles particularly relies on the development of safe lightweight and cost-competitive solutions for hydrogen storage. After the demonstration of hundreds of prototype vehicles today commercial hydrogen tanks are in the first stages of market introduction adopting configurations that use composite materials. However production rates remain low and costs high. This paper intends to provide an insight into the evolving scenario of solutions for hydrogen storage in the transportation sector. Current applications in different sectors of transport are covered focusing on their individual requirements. Furthermore this work addresses the efforts to produce economically attractive composite tanks discussing the challenges surrounding material choices and manufacturing practices as well as cutting-edge trends pursued by research and development teams. Key issues in the design and analysis of hydrogen tanks are also discussed. Finally testing and certification requirements are debated once they play a vital role in industry acceptance.
Carbon-free Green Hydrogen Production Process with Induction Heating-based Ammonia Decomposition Reactor

This study presents an induction heating-based reactor for ammonia decomposition and to achieve a 150 Nm3 /h carbon-free green hydrogen production process. The developed metallic monolith reactor acts by increasing the reactor temperature through an electromagnetic induction method using renewable-based electricity. As a result hydrogen is produced without the generation of air pollutants such as CO2 which are formed via the conventional production pathway. Furthermore techno-economic analysis was conducted based on exergy and economic analysis to evaluate the feasibility of the developed process. Experimentally the proposed reactor showed an ammonia conversion of 90.0 % at 600 ℃ and 7 barg. Exergy analysis indicated that the total unused exergy accounted for 45.79 % of the total exergy input giving an exergy efficiency of 54.21 % for the overall process. Furthermore the CAPEX and OPEX values are calculated as 1599567 USD and 644719 USD/y respectively; therefore the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) was calculated to be 6.98 USD/kgH2. This study also demonstrated that the LCOH varies with the ammonia feed price and the process capacity and so it would be expected to decrease from 6.98 to 5.33 USD/kgH2 as the hydrogen production capacity is increased from 150 to 500 Nm3 / h. Overall our results confirm the feasibility of carbon-free green hydrogen production on on-site hydrogen refueling stations and they will be expected to advance the development of an environmental hydrogen economy.
Bench-Scale Steam Reforming of Methane for Hydrogen Production

The effects of reaction parameters including reaction temperature and space velocity on hydrogen production via steam reforming of methane (SRM) were investigated using lab- and bench-scale reactors to identify critical factors for the design of large-scale processes. Based on thermodynamic and kinetic data obtained using the lab-scale reactor a series of SRM reactions were performed using a pelletized catalyst in the bench-scale reactor with a hydrogen production capacity of 10 L/min. Various temperature profiles were tested for the bench-scale reactor which was surrounded by three successive cylindrical furnaces to simulate the actual SRM conditions. The temperature at the reactor bottom was crucial for determining the methane conversion and hydrogen production rates when a sufficiently high reaction temperature was maintained (>800 ◦C) to reach thermodynamic equilibrium at the gas-hourly space velocity of 2.0 L CH4/(h·gcat). However if the temperature of one or more of the furnaces decreased below 700 ◦C the reaction was not equilibrated at the given space velocity. The effectiveness factor (0.143) of the pelletized catalyst was calculated based on the deviation of methane conversion between the lab- and bench-scale reactions at various space velocities. Finally an idling procedure was proposed so that catalytic activity was not affected by discontinuous operation.
Investigation on the Changes of Pressure and Temperature in High Pressure Filling of Hydrogen Storage Tank

Hydrogen as fuel has been considered as a feasible energy carry and which offers a clean and efficient alternative for transportation. During the high pressure filling the temperature in the hydrogen storage tank (HST) may rise rapidly due to the hydrogen compression. The high temperature may lead to safety problem. Thus for fast and safely refueling the hydrogen several key factors need to be considered. In the present study by the thermodynamics theories a mathematical model is established to simulate and analyze the high pressure filling process of the storage tank for the hydrogen station. In the analysis the physical parameters of normal hydrogen are introduced to make the simulation close to the actual process. By the numerical simulation for 50 MPa compressed hydrogen tank the temperature and pressure trends during filling are obtained. The simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the theoretically calculated ones for adiabatic conditions and the simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the simulation ones for adiabatic conditions. Then the influence of working pressure initial temperature mass flow rate initial pressure and inlet temperature on the temperature rise were analyzed. This study provides a theoretical research basis for high pressure hydrogen energy storage and hydrogenation technology.
Hydrogen Embrittlement of a Boiler Water Wall Tube in a District Heating System

A district heating system is an eco-friendly power generation facility with high energy efficiency. The boiler water wall tube used in the district heating system is exposed to extremely harsh conditions and unexpected fractures often occur during operation. In this study a corrosion failure analysis of the boiler water wall tube was performed to elucidate the failure mechanisms. The study revealed that overheating by flames was the cause of the failure of the boiler water wall tube. With an increase in temperature in a localized region the microstructure not only changed from ferrite/pearlite to martensite/bainite which made it more susceptible to brittleness but it also developed tensile residual stresses in the water-facing side by generating cavities or microcracks along the grain boundaries inside the tube. High-temperature hydrogen embrittlement combined with stress corrosion cracking initiated many microcracks inside the tube and created an intergranular fracture.
Promising Technology Analysis and Patent Roadmap Development in the Hydrogen Supply Chain

Hydrogen energy one of the energy sources of the future represents a substantial issue which affects the industries and national technologies that will develop in the future. In order to utilize hydrogen energy a hydrogen supply chain is required so that hydrogen can be processed and transported to vehicles. It is helpful for technology and policy development to analyze technologies necessary to charge the hydrogen energy generated into vehicles through the supply chain to discover technologies with high potential for future development. The purpose of this paper is to identify promising technologies required in storing transporting and charging vehicles generated by the hydrogen fuel supply chain. Afterward the promising technologies identified are expected to help researchers set a direction in researching technologies and developing related policies. Therefore we provide technology information that can be used promisingly in the future so that researchers in the related field can utilize it effectively. In this paper data analysis is performed using related patents and research papers for technical analysis. Promising technologies that will be the core of the hydrogen fuel supply chain in the future were identified using the published patents and research paper database (DB) in Korea the United States Europe China and Japan. A text mining technique was applied to preprocess data and then a generic topographic map (GTM) analysis discovered promising technologies. Then a technology roadmap was identified by analyzing the promising technology derived from patents and research papers in parallel. In this study through the analysis of patents and research papers related to the hydrogen supply chain the development status of hydrogen storage/transport/charging technology was analyzed and promising technologies with high potential for future development were found. The technology roadmap derived from the analysis can help researchers in the field of hydrogen research establish policies and research technologies.
An Overview of Water Electrolysis Technologies for Green Hydrogen Production

Decarbonizing the planet is one of the major goals that countries around the world have set for 2050 to mitigate the effects of climate change. To achieve these goals green hydrogen that can be produced from the electrolysis of water is an important key solution to tackle global decarbonization. Consequently in recent years there is an increase in interest towards green hydrogen production through the electrolysis process for large-scale implementation of renewable energy based power plants and other industrial and transportation applications. The main objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of various green hydrogen production technologies especially on water electrolysis. In this review various water electrolysis technologies and their techno-commercial prospects including hydrogen production cost along with recent developments in electrode materials and their challenges were summarized. Further some of the most successful results also were described. Moreover this review aims to identify the gaps in water electrolysis research and development towards the techno-commercial perspective. In addition some of the commercial electrolyzer performances and their limitations also were described along with possible solutions for cost-effective hydrogen production Finally we outlined our ideas and possible solutions for driving cost-effective green hydrogen production for commercial applications. This information will provide future research directions and a road map for the development/implementation of commercially viable green hydrogen projects.
Sector Coupling and Migration towards Carbon-Neutral Power Systems

There is increasing interest in migrating to a carbon-neutral power system that relies on renewable energy due to concerns about greenhouse gas emissions energy shortages and global warming. However the increasing share of renewable energy has added volatility and uncertainty to power system operations. Introducing new devices and using flexible resources may help solve the problem but expanding the domain of the problem can be another solution. Sector coupling which integrates production consumption conversion and storage by connecting various energy domains could potentially meet the needs of each energy sector. It can also reduce the generation of surplus energy and unnecessary carbon emissions. As a result sector coupling an integrated energy system increases the acceptance of renewable energy in the traditional power system and makes it carbon neutral. However difficulties in large-scale integration low conversion efficiency and economic feasibility remain obstacles. This perspective paper discusses the background definition and components of sector coupling as well as its functions and examples in rendering power systems carbon-neutral. The current limitations and outlook of sector coupling are also examined.
An Analysis on the Compressed Hydrogen Storage System for the Fast-Filling Process of Hydrogen Gas at the Pressure of 82 MPa

During the fast-filling of a high-pressure hydrogen tank the temperature of hydrogen would rise significantly and may lead to failure of the tank. In addition the temperature rise also reduces hydrogen density in the tank which causes mass decrement into the tank. Therefore it is of practical significance to study the temperature rise and the amount of charging of hydrogen for hydrogen safety. In this paper the change of hydrogen temperature in the tank according to the pressure rise during the process of charging the high-pressure tank in the process of a 82-MPa hydrogen filling system the final temperature the amount of filling of hydrogen gas and the change of pressure of hydrogen through the pressure reducing valve and the performance of heat exchanger for cooling high-temperature hydrogen were analyzed by theoretical and numerical methods. When high-pressure filling began in the initial vacuum state the condition was called the “First cycle”. When the high-pressure charging process began in the remaining condition the process was called the “Second cycle”. As a result of the theoretical analysis the final temperatures of hydrogen gas were calculated to be 436.09 K for the first cycle of the high-pressure tank and 403.55 for the second cycle analysis. The internal temperature of the buffer tank increased by 345.69 K and 32.54 K in the first cycle and second cycles after high-pressure filling. In addition the final masses were calculated to be 11.58 kg and 12.26 kg for the first cycle and second cycle of the high-pressure tank respectively. The works of the paper can provide suggestions for the temperature rise of 82 MPa compressed hydrogen storage system and offer necessary theory and numerical methods for guiding safe operation and construction of a hydrogen filling system.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Conventional and Alternative Vehicles: Predictions Based on Energy Policy Analysis in South Korea

This paper compares the well-to-wheel (WTW) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of representative vehicle types–internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) battery electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV)–in the future (2030) based on a WTW analysis for the present (2017) and an analysis of various energy policies that could affect future emissions. South Korea was selected as the target region because it has detailed energy policies related to alternative vehicles. The WTW analysis for the present was performed based on three sets of subordinate analyses: (1) life cycle analyses of eight base fuels; (2) life cycle analyses of electricity and hydrogen; and (3) analyses of the fuel economies of seven vehicle types. From the WTW analysis for the present the national average WTW GHG emissions of ICEV-gasoline ICEV-diesel ICEV-liquefied petroleum gas HEV PHEV BEV and FCEV were calculated as 225 233 201 159 133 109 and 55 g-CO2-eq./km respectively. For calculating the WTW GHG emissions in the future two policies regarding electricity production and three policies regarding hydrogen production were analysed. Three cases with varying the degrees of improvements in fuel economies were considered. Six future scenarios were constructed and each scenario represented the case in which each energy policy is enacted. In the reference scenario for compact car the WTW GHG emissions of ICEVs-gasoline HEV PHEV BEV-200 mile FCEV were analysed as 161 110 97 86 and 91 g-CO2-eq./km respectively. The differences between ICEV/HEV and BEV were predicted to decrease in the future mainly due to larger improvements of ICEV/HEV in fuel economies compared to that of BEV. The future life cycle GHG emissions of electricity and hydrogen were calculated according to energy policy. Both two policies regarding power generation were confirmed to increase the benefits of utilizing BEVs but current energy policy regarding hydrogen production were confirmed to decrease the benefits of utilizing FCEVs. Based on the comprehensive results of this study a framework was proposed to evaluate the impacts of an energy policy regarding electricity and hydrogen production on the benefits of using BEVs and FCEVs compared to using HEVs and ICEVs. This framework can also be utilized in other countries when they assess and establish their energy policies.
Safety Issues of a Hydrogen Refueling Station and a Prediction for an Overpressure Reduction by a Barrier Using OpenFOAM Software for an SRI Explosion Test in an Open Space

Safety issues arising from a hydrogen explosion accident in Korea are discussed herein. In order to increase the safety of hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) the Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) decided to install a damage-mitigation wall also referred to as a barrier around the storage tanks at the HRSs after evaluating the consequences of hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents based on the characteristics of each HRS. To propose a new regulation related to the barrier installation at the HRSs which can ensure a proper separation distance between the HRS and its surrounding protected facilities in a complex city KGS planned to test various barrier models under hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents to develop a standard model of the barrier. A numerical simulation to investigate the effect of the recommended barrier during hypothetical hydrogen explosion accidents in the HRS will be performed before installing the barrier at the HRSs. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) code based on the open-source software OpenFOAM will be developed for the numerical simulation of various accident scenarios. As the first step in the development of the CFD code we conducted a hydrogen vapor cloud explosion test with a barrier in an open space which was conducted by the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) using the modified XiFoam solver in OpenFOAMv1912. A vapor cloud explosion (VCE) accident may occur due to the leakage of gaseous hydrogen or liquefied hydrogen owing to a failure of piping connected to the storage tank in an HRS. The analysis results using the modified XiFoam predicted the peak overpressure variation from the near field to the far field of the explosion site through the barrier with an error range of approximately ±30% if a proper analysis methodology including the proper mesh distribution in the grid model is chosen. In addition we applied the proposed analysis methodology using the modified XiFoam to barrier shapes that varied from that used in the test to investigate its applicability to predict peak overpressure variations with various barrier shapes. Through the application analysis we concluded that the proposed analysis methodology is sufficient for evaluating the safety effect of the barrier which will be recommended through experimental research during VCE accidents at the HRSs.
CFD Modeling on Natural and Forced Ventilation During Hydrogen Leaks in a Pressure Regulator Process of a Residential Area

Hydrogen fuel cells have been installed in more than 100 facilities and numerous homes in Ulsan hydrogen town in the Republic of Korea. Despite the advantages of hydrogen accidents can still occur near residential areas. Thus appropriate risk mitigation plans should be established. In this study a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of natural and forced ventilation is presented as an emergency response to hydrogen leakages in pressure regulator equipment housing. The CFD model is developed and investigated using three vent configurations: UP CROSS and UP-DOWN. The simulation results indicate that the UPDOWN configuration achieves the lowest internal hydrogen concentration out of the three. In addition the relationship between the total vent size and internal hydrogen concentration is determined. A vent size of 12% of the floor area has the lowest hydrogen concentration. The use of nitrogen for forced ventilation during emergencies is proposed to ensure that the hydrogen concentration of the released gas is less than one-fourth of the lower flammability 2 / 25 limit of hydrogen. Compared to natural ventilation the time required to reach safe conditions is decreased when nitrogen forced ventilation is used.
Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Biomass Conversion

Biomass has incredible potential as an alternative to fossil fuels for energy production that is sustainable for the future of humanity. Hydrogen evolution from photocatalytic biomass conversion not only produces valuable carbon-free energy in the form of molecular hydrogen but also provides an avenue of production for industrially relevant biomass products. This photocatalytic conversion can be realized with efficient sustainable reaction materials (biomass) and inexhaustible sunlight as the only energy inputs. Reported herein is a general strategy and mechanism for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from biomass and biomass-derived substrates (including ethanol glycerol formic acid glucose and polysaccharides). Recent advancements in the synthesis and fundamental physical/mechanistic studies of novel photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution from biomass conversion are summarized. Also summarized are recent advancements in hydrogen evolution efciency regarding biomass and biomass-derived substrates. Special emphasis is given to methods that utilize unprocessed biomass as a substrate or synthetic photocatalyst material as the development of such will incur greater benefts towards a sustainable route for the evolution of hydrogen and production of chemical feedstocks.
Modelling and Simulation of a Hydrogen-Based Hybrid Energy Storage System with a Switching Algorithm

Currently transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energy is needed considering the impact of climate change on the globe. From this point of view there is a need for development in several stages such as storage transmission and conversion of power. In this paper we demonstrate a simulation of a hybrid energy storage system consisting of a battery and fuel cell in parallel operation. The novelty in the proposed system is the inclusion of an electrolyser along with a switching algorithm. The electrolyser consumes electricity to intrinsically produce hydrogen and store it in a tank. This implies that the system consumes electricity as input energy as opposed to hydrogen being the input fuel. The hydrogen produced by the electrolyser and stored in the tank is later utilised by the fuel cell to produce electricity to power the load when needed. Energy is therefore stored in the form of hydrogen. A battery of lower capacity is coupled with the fuel cell to handle transient loads. A parallel control algorithm is developed to switch on/off the charging and discharging cycle of the fuel cell and battery depending upon the connected load. Electrically equivalent circuits of a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyser polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell necessary hydrogen oxygen water tanks and switching controller for the parallel operation were modelled with their respective mathematical equations in MATLAB® Simulink®. In this paper we mainly focus on the modelling and simulation of the proposed system. The results showcase the simulated system’s mentioned advantages and compare its ability to handle loads to a battery-only system.
Dynamic Mechanical Fatigue Behavior of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles Using a Gas Pressure-Loaded Blister

This study reports on an innovative press-loaded blister hybrid system equipped with gas-chromatography (PBS-GC) that is designed to evaluate the mechanical fatigue of two representative types of commercial Nafion membranes under relevant PEMFC operating conditions (e.g. simultaneously controlling temperature and humidity). The influences of various applied pressures (50 kPa 100 kPa etc.) and blistering gas types (hydrogen oxygen etc.) on the mechanical resistance loss are systematically investigated. The results evidently indicate that hydrogen gas is a more effective blistering gas for inducing dynamic mechanical losses of PEM. The changes in proton conductivity are also measured before and after hydrogen gas pressure-loaded blistering. After performing the mechanical aging test a decrease in proton conductivity was confirmed which was also interpreted using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis. Finally an accelerated dynamic mechanical aging test is performed using the homemade PBS-GC system where the hydrogen permeability rate increases significantly when the membrane is pressure-loaded blistering for 10 min suggesting notable mechanical fatigue of the PEM. In summary this PBS-GC system developed in-house clearly demonstrates its capability of screening and characterizing various membrane candidates in a relatively short period of time (<1.5 h at 50 kPa versus 200 h).
Impact of Polymers on Magnesium-Based Hydrogen Storage Systems

In the present scenario much importance has been provided to hydrogen energy systems (HES) in the energy sector because of their clean and green behavior during utilization. The developments of novel techniques and materials have focused on overcoming the practical difficulties in the HES (production storage and utilization). Comparatively considerable attention needs to be provided in the hydrogen storage systems (HSS) because of physical-based storage (compressed gas cold/cryo compressed and liquid) issues such as low gravimetric/volumetric density storage conditions/parameters and safety. In material-based HSS a high amount of hydrogen can be effectively stored in materials via physical or chemical bonds. In different hydride materials Mg-based hydrides (Mg–H) showed considerable benefits such as low density hydrogen uptake and reversibility. However the inferior sorption kinetics and severe oxidation/contamination at exposure to air limit its benefits. There are numerous kinds of efforts like the inclusion of catalysts that have been made for Mg–H to alter the thermodynamic-related issues. Still those efforts do not overcome the oxidation/contamination-related issues. The developments of Mg–H encapsulated by gas-selective polymers can effectively and positively influence hydrogen sorption kinetics and prevent the Mg–H from contaminating (air and moisture). In this review the impact of different polymers (carboxymethyl cellulose polystyrene polyimide polypyrrole polyvinylpyrrolidone polyvinylidene fluoride polymethylpentene and poly(methyl methacrylate)) with Mg–H systems has been systematically reviewed. In polymer-encapsulated Mg–H the polymers act as a barrier for the reaction between Mg–H and O2/H2O selectively allowing the H2 gas and preventing the aggregation of hydride nanoparticles. Thus the H2 uptake amount and sorption kinetics improved considerably in Mg–H.
Comparative Risk Assessment of a Hydrogen Refueling Station Using Gaseous Hydrogen and Formic Acid as the Hydrogen Carrier

To realize a hydrogen economy many studies are being conducted regarding the development and analysis of hydrogen carriers. Recently formic acid has been receiving attention as a potential hydrogen carrier due to its high volumetric energy density and relatively safe characteristics. However hydrogen refueling systems using formic acid are very different from conventional hydrogen refueling stations and quantitative risks assessments need to be conducted to verify their safe usage. In this study a comparative safety analysis of a formic acid hydrogen refueling station (FAHRS) and a gaseous hydrogen refueling station (GHRS) was conducted. Since there is no FAHRS under operation a process simulation model was developed and integrated with quantitative risk assessment techniques to perform safety analysis. Results of the analysis show that the FAHRS poses less risk than the GHRS where the vapor cloud explosion occurring in the buffer tank is of greatest consequence. A GHRS poses a greater risk than an FAHRS due to the high pressure required to store hydrogen in the tube trailer. The mild operating conditions required for storage and dehydrogenation of formic acid contribute to the low risk values of an FAHRS. For risk scenarios exceeding the risk limit risk mitigation measures were applied to design a safe process for GHRS. The results show that the installation of active safety systems for the GHRS allow the system to operate within acceptable safety regions.
Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen–Natural Gas Blended Fuels for 400 MW Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPPs)

Various research and development activities are being conducted to use hydrogen an environmentally friendly fuel to achieve carbon neutrality. Using natural gas–hydrogen blends has advantages such as the usage of traditional combined cycle power plant (CCPP) technology and existing natural gas piping infrastructure. Therefore we conducted CCPP process modeling and economic analysis based on natural gas–hydrogen blends. For process analysis we developed a process model for a 400 MW natural gas CCPP using ASPEN HYSYS and confirmed an error within the 1% range through operation data validation. For economic analysis we comparatively reviewed the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of CCPPs using hydrogen blended up to 0.5 mole fraction. For LCOE sensitivity analysis we used fuel cost capital expenditures capacity factor and power generation as variables. LCOE is 109.15 KRW/kWh when the hydrogen fuel price is 2000 KRW/kg and the hydrogen mole fraction is increased to 0.5 a 5% increase from the 103.9 KRW/kWh of CCPPs that use only natural gas. Economic feasibility at the level of 100% natural gas CCPPs is possible by reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) by at least 20% but net output should be increased by at least 5% (20.47 MW) when considering only performance improvement.
Re-enacting the Hydrogen Tank Explosion of a Fuel-cell Electric Vehicle: An Experimental Study

With the world-wide decision to reduce carbon emissions through the Paris Agreement (2015) the demand for hydrogen-fuelled vehicles has been increasing. Although hydrogen is not a toxic gas it has a wide flammable range (4e75%) and can explode due to static electricity. Therefore studies on hydrogen safety are urgently required. In this study an explosion was induced by applying fire to the lower part of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Out of three compressed hydrogen storage tanks installed in the vehicle two did not have hydrogen fuel and one was filled with compressed gaseous hydrogen of 700 bar and forcedly deactivated its temperature-activated pressure relief device. The side-on overpressure transducers were installed by distance in main directions to measure the side-on overpressure generated by the vehicle explosion. A 10 m-long protective barrier was installed on which reflected overpressure displacement and acceleration were measured to examine the effect of attenuation of explosion damage in the event of an accident. The vehicle exploded approximately 11 min after ignition generating a blast wave fireballs and fragments. The results of the experiment showed that the protective barrier could almost completely block explosive pressure smoke and scattering generated during an explosion. Through Probit function analysis the probabilities of an accident occurring were derived based on peak overpressure peak impulse and scattering. The results of this study can be used to develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for firefighters as the base data for setting the initial operation location and deriving the safe separation distance.
Proactive Emergency Response Strategies for First Responders to Hydrogen Gas Leakages in Vehicles

The widespread use of fossil fuels in automobiles has become a concern particularly in light of recent frequent natural disasters prompting a shift towards eco-friendly vehicles to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This shift is evident in the rapidly increasing registration rates of hydrogen vehicles. However with the growing presence of hydrogen vehicles on roads a corresponding rise in related accidents is anticipated posing new challenges for first responders. In this study computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed to develop effective response strategies for first responders dealing with high-pressure hydrogen gas leaks in vehicle accidents. The analysis revealed that in the absence of blower intervention a vapor cloud explosion from leaked hydrogen gas could generate overpressure exceeding 13.8 kPa potentially causing direct harm to first responders. In the event of a hydrogen vehicle accident requiring urgent rescue activities the appropriate response strategy must be selected. The use of blowers can aid in developing a variety of strategies by reducing the risk of a vapor cloud explosion. Consequently this study offers a tailored response strategy for first responders in hydrogen vehicle leak scenarios emphasizing the importance of situational assessment at the incident site.
Impacts of Green Energy Expansion and Gas Import Reduction on South Korea’s Economic Growth: A System Dynamics Approach

South Korea ranking ninth among the largest energy consumers and seventh in carbon dioxide emissions from 2016 to 2021 faces challenges in energy security and climate change mitigation. The primary challenge lies in transitioning from fossil fuel dependency to a more sustainable and diversified energy portfolio while meeting the growing energy demand for continued economic growth. This necessitates fostering innovation and investment in the green energy sector. This study examines the potential impact of green energy expansion (through integrating renewable energy and hydrogen production) and gas import reduction on South Korea’s economic growth using a system dynamics approach. The findings indicate that increasing investment in green energy can result in significant growth rates ranging from 7% to 35% between 2025 and 2040. Under the expansion renewable energy scenario (A) suggests steady but sustainable economic growth in the long term while the gas import reduction scenario (B) displays a potential for rapid economic growth in the short term with possible instability in the long term. The total production in Scenario B is USD 2.7 trillion in 2025 and will increase to USD 4.8 trillion by 2040. Scenario C which combines the effects of both Scenarios A and B results in consistently high economic growth rates over time and a substantial increase in total production by 2035–2040 from 20% to 46%. These findings are critical for policymakers in South Korea as they strive for sustainable economic growth and transition to renewable energy.
A Simulation Study on Evaluating the Influence of Impurities on Hydrogen Production in Geological Carbon Dioxide Storage

In this study we examined the effect of CO2 injection into deep saline aquifers considering impurities present in blue hydrogen production. A fluid model was designed for reservoir conditions with impurity concentrations of 3.5 and 20%. The results showed that methane caused density decreases of 95.16 and 76.16% at 3.5 and 20% respectively whereas H2S caused decreases of 99.56 and 98.77% respectively. Viscosity decreased from 0.045 to 0.037 cp with increasing methane content up to 20%; however H2S did not affect the viscosity. Notably CO2 with H2S impacted these properties less than methane. Our simulation model was based on the Gorae-V properties and simulated injections for 10 years followed by 100 years of monitoring. Compared with the pure CO2 injection methane reached its maximum pressure after eight years and eleven months at 3.5% and eight years at 20% whereas H2S reached maximum pressure after nine years and two months and nine years and six months respectively. These timings affected the amount of CO2 injected. With methane as an impurity injection efficiency decreased up to 73.16% whereas with H2S it decreased up to 81.99% with increasing impurity concentration. The efficiency of CO2 storage in the dissolution and residual traps was analyzed to examine the impact of impurities. The residual trap efficiency consistently decreased with methane but increased with H2S. At 20% concentration the methane trap exhibited higher efficiency at the end of injection; however H2S had a higher efficiency at the monitoring endpoint. In carbon capture and storage projects methane impurities require removal whereas H2S may not necessitate desulfurization due to its minimal impact on CO2 storage efficiency. Thus the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to CO2 emissions containing H2S as an impurity may enable economically viable operations by reducing additional costs.
Recent Progress in Conducting Polymers for Hydrogen Storage and Fuel Cell Applications

Hydrogen is a clean fuel and an abundant renewable energy resource. In recent years huge scientific attention has been invested to invent suitable materials for its safe storage. Conducting polymers has been extensively investigated as a potential hydrogen storage and fuel cell membrane due to the low cost ease of synthesis and processability to achieve the desired morphological and microstructural architecture ease of doping and composite formation chemical stability and functional properties. The review presents the recent progress in the direction of material selection modification to achieve appropriate morphology and adsorbent properties chemical and thermal stabilities. Polyaniline is the most explored material for hydrogen storage. Polypyrrole and polythiophene has also been explored to some extent. Activated carbons derived from conducting polymers have shown the highest specific surface area and significant storage. This review also covers recent advances in the field of proton conducting solid polymer electrolyte membranes in fuel cells application. This review focuses on the basic structure synthesis and working mechanisms of the polymer materials and critically discusses their relative merits.
CFD Thermo‑Hydraulic Evaluation of a Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tank with Different Insulation Thickness in a Small‑Scale Hydrogen Liquefier

Accurate evaluation of thermo‑fluid dynamic characteristics in tanks is critically important for designing liquid hydrogen tanks for small‑scale hydrogen liquefiers to minimize heat leakage into the liquid and ullage. Due to the high costs most future liquid hydrogen storage tank designs will have to rely on predictive computational models for minimizing pressurization and heat leakage. Therefore in this study to improve the storage efficiency of a small‑scale hydrogen liquefier a three‑ dimensional CFD model that can predict the boil‑off rate and the thermo‑fluid characteristics due to heat penetration has been developed. The prediction performance and accuracy of the CFD model was validated based on comparisons between its results and previous experimental data and a good agreement was obtained. To evaluate the insulation performance of polyurethane foam with three different insulation thicknesses the pressure changes and thermo‑fluid characteristics in a partially liquid hydrogen tank subject to fixed ambient temperature and wind velocity were investigated nu‑ merically. It was confirmed that the numerical simulation results well describe not only the temporal variations in the thermal gradient due to coupling between the buoyance and convection but also the buoyancy‑driven turbulent flow characteristics inside liquid hydrogen storage tanks with differ‑ ent insulation thicknesses. In the future the numerical model developed in this study will be used for optimizing the insulation systems of storage tanks for small‑scale hydrogen liquefiers which is a cost‑effective and highly efficient approach.
Options for Methane Fuel Processing in PEMFC System with Potential Maritime Applications

Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are low-temperature fuel cells that have excellent starting performance due to their low operating temperature can respond quickly to frequent load fluctuations and can be manufactured in small packages. Unlike existing studies that mainly used hydrogen as fuel for PEMFCs in this study methane is used as fuel for PEMFCs to investigate its performance and economy. Methane is a major component of natural gas which is more economically competitive than hydrogen. In this study methane gas is reformed by the steam reforming method and is applied to the following five gas post-treatment systems: (a) Case 1—water– gas shift only (WGS) (b) Case 2—partial oxidation reforming only (PROX) (c) Case 3—methanation only (d) Case 4—WGS + methanation (e) Case 5—WGS + PROX. In the evaluation the carbon monoxide concentration in the gas did not exceed 10 ppm and the methane component which has a very large greenhouse effect was not regenerated in the post-treated exhaust gas. As a result Case 5 (WGS and PROX) is the only case that satisfied both criteria. Therefore we propose Case 5 as an optimized post-treatment system for methane reforming gas in ship PEMFCs.
Thermal Design of a Biohydrogen Production System Driven by Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Waste Heat Using Dynamic Simulation

Utilizing biological processes for hydrogen production via gasification is a promising alternative method to coal gasification. The present study proposes a dynamic simulation model that uses a one-dimensional heat-transfer analysis method to simulate a biohydrogen production system. The proposed model is based on an existing experimental design setup. It is used to simulate a biohydrogen production system driven by the waste heat from an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant equipped with carbon capture and storage technologies. The data from the simulated results are compared with the experimental measurement data to validate the developed model’s reliability. The results show good agreement between the experimental data and the developed model. The relative root-mean-square error for the heat storage feed-mixing and bioreactor tanks is 1.26% 3.59% and 1.78% respectively. After the developed model’s reliability is confirmed it is used to simulate and optimize the biohydrogen production system inside the IGCC power plant. The bioreactor tank’s time constant can be improved when reducing the operating volume of the feed-mixing tank by the scale factors of 0.75 and 0.50 leading to a 15.76% and 31.54% faster time constant respectively when compared with the existing design.

Quantitative Risk Assessment of Hydrogen Refueling Station in Cheonan City of South Korea

The average temperature of the Earth has risen due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases emitted from the usage of fossil fuels. The consequential climate changes have caused various problems fueling the growing demand for environmentally friendly energy sources that can replace fossil fuels. Batteries and hydrogen have thus been utilized as substitute energy sources for automobiles to reduce fossil fuel consumption. Consequently the number of hydrogen refueling stations is increasing due to an increase in the number of hydrogen-powered vehicles. However several incidents have been reported in the United States of America and Japan where hydrogen refueling stations have been operating for a long time. A risk assessment of hydrogen refueling stations operating in urban areas was performed in this study by calculating the risk effect range using a process hazard analysis tool (PHAST) v8.7 from DNV-GL and a hydrogen risk assessment model (HyRAM) from Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The societal risk was assessed through a probit model based on the calculation results. The assessment results showed that the risk caused by jet fire and overpressure in an incident is lower than the ‘as low as reasonably practicable’ (ALARP) level.
The Effect of Ventilation on the Hazards of Hydrogen Release in Enclosed Areas of Hydrogen-fueled Ship

This paper presents a systematic investigation that encompasses the safety assessment of a fuel preparation room (FPR) intended for a hydrogen-fueled ship. The primary objective is to determine the appropriate ventilation strategy to mitigate the risks associated with potential hydrogen leakage. The study focuses on a case involving an FPR measuring 10.2 m × 5.3 m × 2.65 m which is part of a 750 DWT hydrogen-powered fishing vessel. To identify the potential events leading to hydrogen dispersion an event tree analysis is conducted. Additionally existing regulations and guidelines related to the safety assessments of hydrogen leakage in enclosed areas are summarized and analyzed. Computational fluid dynamics FLACS-CFD are utilized for the consequence analysis in order to evaluate the impact of ventilation on hydrogen dispersion and concentration within the FPR. The research findings indicate significant effects of ventilation on the hazards and safety assessments of FPRs and high-pressure fuel gas supply systems. The study highlights that hydrogen vapor tends to accumulate at the ceiling and in the corners and spaces created by the equipment. The position and size of ventilation openings greatly influence the dispersion of hydrogen leakage. Proper ventilation design including top inlet ventilation and outlet ventilation on the opposite side helps to maintain a safe FPR by facilitating the efficient dispersion of hydrogen vapor. Moreover locating inlet ventilation on the same side as the outlet ventilation is found to hinder dispersion while the cross-ventilation achieved by placing inlets and outlets on opposite sides enhances airflow and dispersion. Consequently it is recommended to prioritize the structural design of FPRs and implement enhanced safety measures. Additionally updating the relevant regulations to address these concerns is strongly advised.
Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Hydrogen Production Processes: Turquoise Hydrogen vs. Steam Methane Reforming

Hydrogen has received substantial attention because of its diverse application in the energy sector. Steam methane reforming (SMR) dominates the current hydrogen production and is the least expensive endothermic reaction to produce grey hydrogen. This technology provides the advantages of low cost and high energy efficiency; however it emits an enormous amount of CO2. Carbon capture storage (CCS) technology helps reduce these emissions by 47% to 53% producing blue hydrogen. Methane pyrolysis is an alternative to SMR that produces (ideally) CO2-free turquoise hydrogen. In practice methane pyrolysis reduces CO2 emissions by 71% compared to grey hydrogen and 46% compared to blue hydrogen. While carbon dioxide emissions decrease with CCS fugitive methane emissions (FMEs) for blue and turquoise hydrogen are higher than those for grey hydrogen because of the increased use of natural gas to power carbon capture. We undertake FMEs of 3.6% of natural gas consumption for individual processes. In this study we also explore the utilization of biogas as a feedstock and additional Boudouard reactions for efficient utilization of solid carbon from methane pyrolysis and carbon dioxide from biogas. The present study focuses on possible ways to reduce overall emissions from turquoise hydrogen to provide solutions for a sustainable low-CO2 energy source.
A Theoretical Study on the Hydrogen Filling Process of the On-board Storage Cylinder in Hydrogen Refueling Station

With the development of the hydrogen fuel automobile industry higher requirements are put forward for the construction of hydrogen energy infrastructure the matching of parameters and the control strategy of hydrogen filling rate in the hydrogen charging process of hydrogen refueling stations. At present the technological difficulty of hydrogen fueling is mainly reflected in the balanced treatment of reducing the temperature rise of hydrogen and shortening the filling time during the fast filling process. Vehicle hydrogen storage cylinder (VHSC) is one of the important components of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This study proposed a theoretical model for calculating the temperature rise in the VHSC during the high pressure refueling process and revealed the hydrogen temperature rise during refueling. A hydrogen temperature rise prediction model was constructed to elucidate the relationship between filling parameters and temperature rise. The filling process of VHSC was analyzed from the theoretical method. The theoretical analysis results were consistent with the simulation and experimental analysis results which provided a theoretical basis for the current hydrogen temperature control algorithm of the gas source in the hydrogen refueling station and then reduced the energy consumption required for hydrogen cooling in the hydrogen refueling station.
Design and Analysis of Cryogenic Cooling System for Electric Propulsion System Using Liquid Hydrogen

As the demand for eco-friendly energy increases hydrogen energy and liquid hydrogen storage technologies are being developed as an alternative. Hydrogen has a lower liquefaction point and higher thermal conductivity than nitrogen or neon used in general cryogenic systems. Therefore the application of hydrogen to cryogenic systems can increase efficiency and stability. This paper describes the design and analysis of a cryogenic cooling system for an electric propulsion system using liquid hydrogen as a refrigerant and energy source. The proposed aviation propulsion system (APS) consists of a hydrogen fuel cell a battery a power distribution system and a motor. For a lab-scale 5 kW superconducting motor using a 2G high-temperature superconducting (HTS) wire the HTS motor and cooling system were analyzed for electromagnetic and thermal characteristics using a finite element method-based analysis program. The liquid hydrogen-based cooling system consists of a pre-cooling system a hydrogen liquefaction system and an HTS coil cooling system. Based on the thermal load analysis results of the HTS coil the target temperature for hydrogen gas pre-cooling the number of buffer layers and the cryo-cooler capacity were selected to minimize the thermal load of the hydrogen liquefaction system. As a result the hydrogen was stably liquefied and the temperature of the HTS coil corresponding to the thermal load of the designed lab-scale HTS motor was maintained at 30 K.
Oxy-fuel Combustion-based Blue Hydrogen Production with the Integration of Water Electrolysis

Blue hydrogen is gaining attention as an intermediate step toward achieving eco-friendly green hydrogen production. However the general blue hydrogen production requires an energy-intensive process for carbon capture and storage resulting in low process efficiency. Additionally the hydrogen production processes steam methane reforming (SMR) and electrolysis emits waste heat and byproduct oxygen respectively. To solve these problems this study proposes an oxy-fuel combustion-based blue hydrogen production process that integrates fossil fuel-based hydrogen production and electrolysis processes. The proposed processes are SMR + SOEC and SMR + PEMEC whereas SMR solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) and proton exchange membrane electrolysis cell (PEMEC) are also examined for comparison. In the proposed processes the oxygen produced by the electrolyzer is utilized for oxy-fuel combustion in the SMR process and the resulting flue gas containing CO2 and H2O is condensed to easily separate CO2. Additionally the waste heat from the SMR process is recovered to heat the feed water for the electrolyzer thereby maximizing the process efficiency. Techno-economic sensitivity and greenhouse gas (GHG) analyses were conducted to evaluate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed processes. The results show that SMR + SOEC demonstrated the highest thermal efficiency (85.2%) and exergy efficiency (80.5%) exceeding the efficiency of the SMR process (78.4% and 70.4% for thermal and exergy efficiencies respectively). Furthermore the SMR + SOEC process showed the lowest levelized cost of hydrogen of 6.21 USD/kgH2. Lastly the SMR + SOEC demonstrated the lowest life cycle GHG emissions. In conclusion the proposed SMR + SOEC process is expected to be a suitable technology for the transition from gray to green hydrogen.
A Web-based Decision Support System (DSS) for Hydrogen Refueling Station Location and Supply Chain Optimisation

This study presents a novel web-based decision support system (DSS) that optimizes the locations of hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) and hydrogen supply chains (HSCs). The system is developed with a design science approach that identifies key design requirements and features through interviews and literature reviews. Based on the findings a system architecture and data model were designed incorporating scenario management optimization model visualization and data management components. The DSS provides a two-stage solution model that links demand to HRSs and production facilities to HRSs. A prototype is demonstrated with a plan for 2025 and 2030 in the Republic of Korea where 450 to 660 stations were deployed nationwide and linked to production facilities. User evaluation confirmed the effectiveness of the DSS in solving optimization problems and its potential to assist the government and municipalities in planning hydrogen infrastructure.
Urban Hydrogen Production Model Using Environmental Infrastructures to Achieve the Net Zero Goal

Land available for energy production is limited in cities owing to high population density. To reach the net zero goal cities contributing 70% of overall greenhouse gas emissions need to dramatically reduce emissions and increase self-sufficiency in energy production. Environmental infrastructures such as sewage treatment and incineration plants can be used as energy production facilities in cities. This study attempted to examine the effect of using environmental infrastructure such as energy production facilities to contribute toward the carbon neutrality goal through urban energy systems. In particular since the facilities are suitable for hydrogen supply in cities the analysis was conducted focusing on the possibility of hydrogen production. First the current status of energy supply and demand and additional energy production potential in sewage treatment and incineration plants in Seoul were analyzed. Then the role of these environmental infrastructures toward energy self-sufficiency in the urban system was examined. This study confirmed that the facilities can contribute to the city’s energy self-sufficiency and the achievement of its net-zero goal.
Environmental Assessment of Hydrogen Utilization in Various Applications and Alternative Renewable Sources for Hydrogen Production: A Review

Rapid industrialization is consuming too much energy and non-renewable energy resources are currently supplying the world’s majority of energy requirements. As a result the global energy mix is being pushed towards renewable and sustainable energy sources by the world’s future energy plan and climate change. Thus hydrogen has been suggested as a potential energy source for sustainable development. Currently the production of hydrogen from fossil fuels is dominant in the world and its utilization is increasing daily. As discussed in the paper a large amount of hydrogen is used in rocket engines oil refining ammonia production and many other processes. This paper also analyzes the environmental impacts of hydrogen utilization in various applications such as iron and steel production rocket engines ammonia production and hydrogenation. It is predicted that all of our fossil fuels will run out soon if we continue to consume them at our current pace of consumption. Hydrogen is only ecologically friendly when it is produced from renewable energy. Therefore a transition towards hydrogen production from renewable energy resources such as solar geothermal and wind is necessary. However many things need to be achieved before we can transition from a fossil-fuel-driven economy to one based on renewable energy
Review on Bubble Dynamics in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis: Towards Optimal Green Hydrogen Yield

Water electrolysis using a proton exchange membrane (PEM) holds substantial promise to produce green hydrogen with zero carbon discharge. Although various techniques are available to produce hydrogen gas the water electrolysis process tends to be more cost-effective with greater advantages for energy storage devices. However one of the challenges associated with PEM water electrolysis is the accumulation of gas bubbles which can impair cell performance and result in lower hydrogen output. Achieving an in-depth knowledge of bubble dynamics during electrolysis is essential for optimal cell performance. This review paper discusses bubble behaviors measuring techniques and other aspects of bubble dynamics in PEM water electrolysis. It also examines bubble behavior under different operating conditions as well as the system geometry. The current review paper will further improve the understanding of bubble dynamics in PEM water electrolysis facilitating more competent inexpensive and feasible green hydrogen production.
Comparative Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Analysis of Clean Hydrogen Pathways: Assessing Domestic Production and Overseas Import in South Korea

The development of a Clean Hydrogen Standard based on life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is gaining prominence on the international agenda. Thus a framework for assessing life-cycle GHG emissions for clean hydrogen pathways is necessary. In this study the comprehensive datasets and effects of various scenarios encompassing hydrogen production carriers (liquid hydrogen ammonia methylcyclohexane) carbon capture and storage (CCS) target analysis year (2021 2030) to reflect trends of greening grid electricity and potential import countries on aggregated life-cycle GHG emissions were presented. South Korea was chosen as a case study region and the low-carbon alternatives were suggested for reducing aggregated emissions to meet the Korean standard (5 kgCO2e/kgH2). First capturing and storing nearly entire (>90%) CO2 from fossil- and waste-based production pathways is deemed essential. Second when repurposing the use of hydrogen that was otherwise used internally applying a penalty for substitution is appropriate leading to results notably exceeding the standard. Third for electrolysis-based hydrogen using renewable or nuclear electricity is essential. Lastly when hydrogen is imported in a well-to-point-of-delivery (WtP) perspective using renewable electricity during hydrogen conversion into a carrier and reusing the produced hydrogen for endothermic reconversion reaction are recommended. By implementing the developed calculation framework to other countries' cases it was observed that importing hydrogen to regions having scope of WtP or above (e.g. well-to-wheel) might not meet the threshold due to additional emissions from importation processes. Additionally for hydrogen carriers undergoing the endothermic reconversion the approach to reduce WtP emissions (reusing produced hydrogen) may conflict with the approach to reduce well-to-gate (WtG) emission (using external fossilbased fuel). The discrepancy highlights the need to set a broader scope of emissions assessment to effectively promote the life-cycle emission reduction efforts of hydrogen importers. This study contributes to the field of clean hydrogen GHG emission assessment offering a robust database and calculation framework while addressing the effects of greening grid electricity and CCS implementation proposing low-carbon alternatives and GHG assessment scope to achieve global GHG reduction.

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Energy Management for Liquid Hydrogen-Fueled Hybrid Electric Ship Propulsion System

This study proposed a deep reinforcement learning-based energy management strategy (DRL-EMS) that can be applied to a hybrid electric ship propulsion system (HSPS) integrating liquid hydrogen (LH2 ) fuel gas supply system (FGSS) proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and lithium-ion battery systems. This study analyzed the optimized performance of the DRL-EMS and the operational strategy of the LH2 -HSPS. To train the proposed DRL-EMS a reward function was defined based on fuel consumption and degradation of power sources during operation. Fuel consumption for ship propulsion was estimated with the power for balance of plant (BOP) of the LH2 FGSS and PEMFC system. DRL-EMS demonstrated superior global and real-time optimality compared to benchmark algorithms namely dynamic programming (DP) and sequential quadratic programming (SQP)-based EMS. For various operation cases not used in training DRL-EMS resulted in 0.7% to 9.2% higher operating expenditure compared to DP-EMS. Additionally DRL-EMS was trained to operate 60% of the total operation time in the maximum efficiency range of the PEMFC system. Different hydrogen fuel costs did not affect the optimized operational strategy although the operating expenditure (OPEX) was dependent on the hydrogen fuel cost. Different capacities of the battery system did not considerably change the OPEX.
Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment of Eco-Friendly Alternative Ship Fuels (MGO, LNG, and Hydrogen) for 170 GT Nearshore Ferry

With increasing concerns about environmental pollution the shipping industry has been considering various fuels as alternative power sources. This paper presents a study of the holistic environmental impacts of eco-friendly alternative ship fuels of marine gas oil (MGO) liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen across each of their life cycles from their production to the operation of the ship. The environmental impacts of the fuels were estimated by life-cycle assessment (LCA) analysis in the categories of well-to-tank tank-to-wake and well-to-wake phases. The LCA analysis was targeted for a 170 gross tonnage (GT) nearshore ferry operating in the ROK which was conceptually designed in the study to be equipped with the hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The environmental impact performance was presented with comparisons for the terms of global warming potential (GWP) acidification potential (AP) photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) eutrophication potential (EP) and particulate matter (PM). The results showed that the hydrogen showed the highest GWP level during its life cycle due to the large amount of emissions in the hydrogen generation process through the steam methane reforming (SMR) method. The paper concludes with suggestions of an alternative fuel for the nearshore ferry and its production method based on the results of the study.
Jet Flame Risk Analysis for Safe Response to Hydrogen Vehicle Accidents

With an increase in the use of eco-friendly vehicles such as hybrid electric and hydrogen vehicles in response to the global climate crisis accidents related to these vehicles have also increased. Numerical analysis was performed to optimize the safety of first responders responding to hydrogen vehicle accidents wherein hydrogen jet flames occur. The influence range of the jet flame generated through a 1.8-mm-diameter nozzle was analyzed based on five discharge angles (90 75 60 45 and 30◦ ) between the road surface and the downward vertical. As the discharge angle decreases toward the road surface the risk area that could cause damage moves from the center of the vehicle to the rear; at a discharge angle of 90◦ the range above 9.5 kW/m2 was 1.59 m and 4.09 m to the front and rear of the vehicle respectively. However at a discharge angle of 30◦ it was not generated at the front but was 10.39 m to the rear. In response to a hydrogen vehicle accident first responders should perform rescue activities approaching from a diagonal direction to the vehicle front to minimize injury risk. This study can be used in future hydrogen vehicle design to develop the response strategy of the first responders.
Risk Assessment of Explosion Accidents in Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Rooms Using Experimental Investigations and Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations

For the safe utilization and management of hydrogen energy within a fuel-cell room in a hydrogen-fueled house an explosion test was conducted to evaluate the potential hazards associated with hydrogen accident scenarios. The overpressure and heat radiation were measured for an explosion accident at distances of 1 2 3 5 and 10 m for hydrogen–air mixing ratios of 10% 25% 40% and 60%. When the hydrogen–air mixture ratio was 40% the greatest overpressure was 24.35 kPa at a distance of 1 m from the fuel-cell room. Additionally the thermal radiation was more than 1.5 kW/m2 which could cause burns at a distance of 5 m from the hydrogen fuel-cell room. Moreover a thermal radiation in excess of 1.5 kW/m2 was computed at a distance of 3 m from the hydrogen fuel-cell room when the hydrogen–air mixing ratio was 25% and 60%. Consequently an explosion in the hydrogen fuel-cell room did not considerably affect fatality levels but could affect the injury levels and temporary threshold shifts. Furthermore the degree of physical damage did not reach major structural damage levels causing only minor structural damage.
Which Is Preferred between Electric or Hydrogen Cars for Carbon Neutrality in the Commercial Vehicle Transportation Sector of South Korea? Implications from a Public Opinion Survey

South Korea has drawn up plans to reduce greenhouse gases by 29.7 million tons by supplying 4.5 million electric and hydrogen cars by 2030 to implement the “2050 carbon neutrality” goal. This article gathers data on public preferences for electric cars (ECs) over hydrogen cars (HCs) in the commercial vehicle transportation sector through a survey of 1000 people. Moreover the strength of the preference was evaluated on a five-point scale. Of all respondents 60.0 percent preferred ECs and 21.0 percent HCs the former being 2.86 times greater than the latter. On the other hand the strength of the preference for HCs was 1.42 times greater than that for ECs. Factors influencing the preference for ECs over HCs were also explored through adopting the ordered probit model which is useful in examining ordinal preference rather than cardinal preference. The analyzed factors which are related to respondents’ characteristics experiences and perceptions can be usefully employed for developing strategies of promoting carbon neutrality in the commercial vehicle transportation sector and preparing policies to improve public acceptance thereof.
Economic Prospects of Taxis Powered by Hydrogen Fuel Cells in Palestine

Recently major problems related to fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have arisen in the transportation sector. Therefore developing transportation modes powered by alternative fuels has become one of the main targets for car manufacturers and governments around the world. This study aimed to investigate the economic prospects of using hydrogen fuel cell technology in taxi fleets in Westbank. For this purpose a model that could predict the number of taxis was developed and the expected economic implications of using hydrogen fuel cell technology in taxi fleets were determined based on the expected future fuel consumption and future fuel cost. After analysis of the results it was concluded that a slight annual increase in the number of taxis in Palestine is expected in the future due to the government restrictions on issuing new taxi permits in order to get this sector organized. Furthermore using hydrogen fuel cells in taxi fleets is expected to become more and more feasible over time due to the expected future increase in oil price and the expected significant reduction in hydrogen cost as a result of the new technologies that are expected to be used in the production and handling of hydrogen.
Experimental Analysis of the Effects of Ship Motion on Hydrogen Dispersion in an Enclosed Area

This study aims to experimentally quantify the hydrogen diffusion characteristics by ship motion. Hydrogen leakage experiments were conducted under various ship motion conditions and the corresponding hydrogen concentrations for each sensor were expressed by an equation. The experimental facility was a scale model of the hydrogen fuel storage room of a ship. An experiment was conducted by implementing the roll and pitch motions of the ship as well as motion direction using a ship simulator. In the equation describing the hydrogen concentration the minimum and maximum root mean square deviations were 0.987 and 0.707 respectively and the correlations were 0.000109 and 0.0012289. Although the results differed as per the sensor location the hydrogen concentration was affected by the motion period of the ship. The experimental results and prediction equations can be useful for sensor and vent location selection by predicting the concentration when hydrogen leaks in ships in motion.
Heat Integration of Liquid Hydrogen-Fueled Hybrid Electric Ship Propulsion System

This study introduced the methodology for integrating ethylene glycol/water mixture (GW) systems which supply heat energy to the liquid hydrogen (LH2 ) fuel gas supply system (FGSS) and manage the temperature conditions of the battery system. All systems were designed and simulated based on the power demand of a 2 MW class platform supply vessel assumed as the target ship. The LH2 FGSS model is based on Aspen HYSYS V14 and the cell model that makes up the battery system is implemented based on a Thevenin model with four parameters. Through three different simulation cases the integrated GW system significantly reduced electric power consumption for the GW heater during ship operations achieving reductions of 1.38% (Case 1) 16.29% (Case 2) and 27.52% (Case 3). The energy-saving ratio showed decreases of 1.86% (Case 1) 21.01% (Case 2) and 33.80% (Case 3) in overall energy usage within the GW system. Furthermore an examination of the battery system’s thermal management in the integrated GW system demonstrated stable cell temperature control within ±3 K of the target temperature making this integration a viable solution for maintaining normal operating temperatures despite relatively higher fluctuations compared to an independent GW system.
Proposal of Zero-Emission Tug in South Korea Using Fuel Cell/Energy Storage System: Economic and Environmental Long-Term Impacts

This study presents the results of economic and environmental analysis for two types of zero-emission ships (ZESs) that are receiving more attention to meet strengthened environmental regulations. One of the two types of ZES is the ZES using only the energy storage system (All-ESS) and the other is the ZES with fuel cell and ESS hybrid system (FC–ESS). The target ship is a tug operating in South Korea and the main parameters are based on the specific circumstances of South Korea. The optimal capacity of the ESS for each proposed system is determined using an optimization tool. The total cost for a ship’s lifetime is calculated using economic analysis. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission for the fuel’s lifecycle (well-to-wake) is calculated using environmental analysis. The results reveal that the proposed ZESs are 1.7–3.4 times more expensive than the conventional marine gas oil (MGO)-fueled ship; however it could be reduced by 1.3–2.4 times if the carbon price is considered. The proposed ZESs have 58.7–74.3% lower lifecycle GHG emissions than the one from the conventional ship. The results also highlight that the electricity- or hydrogen-based ZESs should reduce GHG emissions from the upstream phase (well-to-tank) to realize genuine ZESs.
Implementation of Formic Acid as a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC): Techno-Economic Analysis and Life Cycle Assessment of Formic Acid Produced via CO2 Utilization

To meet the global climate goals agreed upon regarding the Paris Agreement governments and institutions around the world are investigating various technologies to reduce carbon emissions and achieve a net-negative energy system. To this end integrated solutions that incorporate carbon utilization processes as well as promote the transition of the fossil fuel-based energy system to carbon-free systems such as the hydrogen economy are required. One of the possible pathways is to utilize CO2 as the base chemical for producing a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) using CO2 as a mediating chemical for delivering H2 to the site of usage since gaseous and liquid H2 retain transportation and storage problems. Formic acid is a probable candidate considering its high volumetric H2 capacity and low toxicity. While previous studies have shown that formic acid is less competitive as an LOHC candidate compared to other chemicals such as methanol or toluene the results were based on out-of-date process schemes. Recently advances have been made in the formic acid production and dehydrogenation processes and an analysis regarding the recent process configurations could deem formic acid as a feasible option for LOHC. In this study the potential for using formic acid as an LOHC is evaluated with respect to the state-of-the-art formic acid production schemes including the use of heterogeneous catalysts during thermocatalytic and electrochemical formic acid production from CO2 . Assuming a hydrogen distribution system using formic acid as the LOHC each of the production transportation dehydrogenation and CO2 recycle sections are separately modeled and evaluated by means of techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). Realistic scenarios for hydrogen distribution are established considering the different transportation and CO2 recovery options; then the separate scenarios are compared to the results of a liquefied hydrogen distribution scenario. TEA results showed that while the LOHC system incorporating the thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid is more expensive than liquefied H2 distribution the electrochemical CO2 reduction to formic acid system reduces the H2 distribution cost by 12%. Breakdown of the cost compositions revealed that reduction of steam usage for thermocatalytic processes in the future can make the LOHC system based on thermocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid to be competitive with liquefied H2 distribution if the production cost could be reduced by 23% and 32% according to the dehydrogenation mode selected. Using formic acid as a LOHC was shown to be less competitive compared to liquefied H2 delivery in terms of LCA but producing formic acid via electrochemical CO2 reduction was shown to retain the lowest global warming potential among the considered options.
Process Design and Improvement for Hydrogen Production Based on Thermodynamic Analysis: Practical Application to Real-world On-site Hydrogen Refueling Stations

An energy source transition is necessary to realize carbon neutrality emphasizing the importance of a hydrogen economy. The transportation sector accounted for 27% of annual carbon emissions in 2019 highlighting the increasing importance of transitioning to hydrogen vehicles and establishing hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs). In particular HRSs need to be prioritized for deploying hydrogen vehicles and developing hydrogen supply chains. Thus research on HRS is important for achieving carbon neutrality in the transportation sector. In this study we improved the efficiency and scaled up the capacity of an on-site HRS (based on steam methane reforming with a hydrogen production rate of 30 Nm3/h) in Seoul Korea. This HRS was a prototype with low efficiency and capacity. Its efficiency was increased through thermodynamic analysis and heat exchanger network synthesis. Furthermore the process was scaled up from 30 Nm3/h to 150 Nm3/h to meet future hydrogen demand. The results of exergy analysis indicated that the exergy destruction in the reforming reactor and heat exchanger accounted for 58.1% and 19.8% respectively of the total exergy destruction. Thus the process was improved by modifying the heat exchanger network to reduce the exergy losses in these units. Consequently the thermal and exergy efficiencies were increased from 75.7% to 78.6% and from 68.1% to 70.4% respectively. The improved process was constructed and operated to demonstrate its performance. The operational and simulation data were similar within the acceptable error ranges. This study provides guidelines for the design and installation of low-carbon on-site HRSs.
Preliminary Study for the Commercialization of a Electrochemical Hydrogen Compressor

A global energy shift to a carbon‐neutral society requires clean energy. Hydrogen can accelerate the process of expanding clean and renewable energy sources. However conventional hydrogen compression and storage technology still suffers from inefficiencies high costs and safety concerns. An electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) is a device similar in structure to a water electrolyzer. Its most significant advantage is that it can accomplish hydrogen separation and compression at the same time. With no mechanical motion and low energy consumption the EHC is the key to future hydrogen compression and purification technology breakthroughs. In this study the compression performance efficiency and other related parameters of EHC are investigated through experiments and simulation calculations. The experimental results show that under the same experimental conditions increasing the supply voltage and the pressure in the anode chamber can improve the reaction rate of EHC and balance the pressure difference between the cathode and anode. The presence of residual air in the anode can impede the interaction between hydrogen and the catalyst as well as the proton exchange membrane (PEM) resulting in a decrease in performance. In addition it was found that a single EHC has a better compression ratio and reaction rate than a double EHC. The experimental results were compatible with the theoretical calculations within less than a 7% deviation. Finally the conditions required to reach commercialization were evaluated using the theoretical model.
Pathways to the Hydrogen Economy: A Multidimensional Analysis of the Technological Innovation Systems of Germany and South Korea

The global trend towards decarbonization and the demand for energy security have put hydrogen energy into the spotlight of industry politics and societies. Numerous governments worldwide are adopting policies and strategies to facilitate the transition towards hydrogen-based economies. To assess the determinants of such transition this study presents a comparative analysis of the technological innovation systems (TISs) for hydrogen technologies in Germany and South Korea both recognized as global front-runners in advancing and implementing hydrogen-based solutions. By providing a multi-dimensional assessment of pathways to the hydrogen economy our analysis introduces two novel and crucial elements to the TIS analysis: (i) We integrate the concept of ‘quality infrastructure’ given the relevance of safety and quality assurance for technology adoption and social acceptance and (ii) we emphasize the social perspective within the hydrogen TIS. To this end we conducted 24 semi-structured expert interviews applying qualitative open coding to analyze the data. Our results indicate that the hydrogen TISs in both countries have undergone significant developments across various dimensions. However several barriers still hinder the further realization of a hydrogen economy. Based on our findings we propose policy implications that can facilitate informed policy decisions for a successful hydrogen transition.
Economic and Environmental Potential of Green Hydrogen Carriers (GHCs) Produced via Reduction of Amine-capture CO2

Hydrogen is deemed as a crucial component in the transition to a carbon-free energy system and researchers are actively working to realize the hydrogen economy. While hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources is a promising means of providing clean energy to households and industries its practical usage is currently hindered by difficulties in transportation and storage. Due to the extreme operating conditions required for liquefying hydrogen various hydrogen carriers are being considered which can be transported and stored at mild operating conditions and provide hydrogen at the site of usage. Among various candidates green hydrogen carriers obtained via carbon dioxide utilization have been proposed as an economically and environmentally feasible option. Herein the potential of using methanol and formic acid as green hydrogen carriers are evaluated regarding various production and dehydrogenation pathways within a hydrogen distribution system including the recycle of carbon dioxide. Recent progress in carbon dioxide utilization processes especially conversion of carbon dioxide captured in amine solutions have demonstrated promising results for methanol and formic acid production. This study analyzes seven scenarios that consider carbon dioxide utilization-based thermocatalytic and electrochemical methanol and formic acid production as well as different dehydrogenation pathways and compares them to the scenario of delivering liquefied hydrogen. The scenarios are thoroughly analyzed via techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment methods. The results of the study indicate that methanol-based options are economically viable reducing the cost up to 43% compared to liquefied hydrogen delivery. As for formic acid only the electrochemical production method is profitable retaining 10% less cost compared to liquefied hydrogen delivery. In terms of environmental impact all of the scenarios show higher global warming impact values than liquefied hydrogen distribution. However results show that in an optimistic case where wind electricity is widely used electrochemical formic acid production is competitive with liquefied hydrogen distribution retaining 39% less global warming impact values. This is because high conversion can be achieved at mild operating conditions for the production and dehydrogenation reactions of formic acid reducing the input of utilities other than electricity. This study suggests that while methanol can be a shortterm solution for hydrogen distribution electrochemical formic acid production may be a viable long-term option.
Enhancing Safety through Optimal Placement of Components in Hydrogen Tractor: Rollover Angle Analysis

Hydrogen tractors are being developed necessitating consideration of the variation in the center of gravity depending on the arrangement of components such as power packs and cooling modules that replace traditional engines. This study analyzes the effects of component arrangement on stability and rollover angle in hydrogen tractors through simulations and proposes an optimal configuration. Stability is evaluated by analyzing rollover angles in various directions with rotations around the tractor’s midpoint. Based on the analysis of rollover angles for Type 1 Type 2 and Type 3 hydrogen tractors Type 2 demonstrates superior stability compared to the other types. Specifically when comparing lateral rollover angles at 0◦ rotation Type 2 exhibits a 2% increase over Type 3. Upon rotations at 90◦ and 180◦ Type 2 consistently displays the highest rollover angles with differences ranging from approximately 6% to 12% compared to the other types. These results indicate that Type 2 with its specific component arrangement offers the most stable configuration among the three types of tractors. It is confirmed that the rollover angle changes based on component arrangement with a lower center of gravity resulting in greater stability. These findings serve as a crucial foundation for enhancing stability in the future design and manufacturing phases of hydrogen tractors.
Role of a Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cell in Remote Area Power Supply: A Review

This manuscript presents a thorough review of unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs) and their importance in Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS). In RAPS systems that utilize solar and hydrogen power which typically include photovoltaic modules a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer hydrogen gas storage and PEM fuel cells the cost of these systems is currently higher compared to conventional RAPS systems that employ diesel generators or batteries. URFCs offer a potential solution to reduce the expenses of solar hydrogen renewable energy systems in RAPS by combining the functionalities of the electrolyzer and fuel cell into a single unit thereby eliminating the need to purchase separate and costly electrolyzer and fuel cell units. URFCs are particularly well-suited for RAPS applications because the electrolyzer and fuel cell do not need to operate simultaneously. In electrolyzer mode URFCs function similarly to stand-alone electrolyzers. However in fuel cell mode the performance of URFCs is inferior to that of stand-alone fuel cells. The presented review summarizes the past present and future of URFCs with details on the operating modes of URFCs limitations and technical challenges and applications. Solar hydrogen renewable energy applications in RAPS and challenges facing solar hydrogen renewable energy in the RAPS is discussed in detail.
Techno‑Economic Comparative Analysis of Two Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems for Powering a Simulated House, including a Hydrogen Vehicle Load at Jeju Island

This work undertakes a techno‑economic comparative analysis of the design of photo‑ voltaic panel/wind turbine/electrolyzer‑H2 tank–fuel cell/electrolyzer‑H2 tank (configuration 1) and photovoltaic panel/wind turbine/battery/electrolyzer‑H2 tank (configuration 2) to supply electricity to a simulated house and a hydrogen‑powered vehicle on Jeju Island. The aim is to find a system that will make optimum use of the excess energy produced by renewable energies to power the hydrogen vehicle while guaranteeing the reliability and cost‑effectiveness of the entire system. In addition to evaluating the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) and the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) the search for achieving that objective leads to the evaluation of two new performance indicators: Loss of Hydrogen Supply Probability (LHSP) and Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). After anal‑ ysis for 0 < LPSP < 1 and 0 < LHSP < 1 used as the constraints in a multi‑objective genetic algorithm configuration 1 turns out to be the most efficient loads feeder with an LCOE of 0.3322 USD/kWh an LPSP of 0% concerning the simulated house load an LCOH of 11.5671 USD/kg for a 5 kg hydrogen storage and an LHSP of 0.0043% regarding the hydrogen vehicle load.
A Computational Study of Hydrogen Dispersion and Explosion after Large-Scale Leakage of Liquid Hydrogen

This study employs the FLACS code to analyze hydrogen leakage vapor dispersion and subsequent explosions. Utilizing pseudo-source models a liquid pool model and a hybrid model combining both we investigate dispersion processes for varying leak mass flow rates (0.225 kg/s and 0.73 kg/s) in a large open space. We also evaluate explosion hazards based on overpressure and impulse effects on humans. The computational results compared with experimental data demonstrated reasonable hydrogen vapor cloud concentration predictions especially aligned with the wind direction. For higher mass flow rate of 0.73 kg/s the pseudo-source model exhibited the most reasonable predictive performance for locations near the leak source despite the hybrid model yielded similar results to the pseudo-source model while the liquid pool model was more suitable for lower mass flow rate of 0.225 kg/s. Regarding explosion analyses using overpressure-impulse diagram higher mass flow rates leaded to potentially fatal overpressure and impulse effects on humans. However lower mass flow rates may cause severe eardrum damage at the maximum overpressure point.
H2 URESONIC: Design of a Solar-Hydrogen University Renewable Energy System for a New and Innovative Campus

The necessity to move to sustainable energy solutions has inspired an investigation of innovative technologies for satisfying educational institutions’ sustainable energy needs. The possibility of a solar-hydrogen storage system and its integration into university energy management is investigated in this article. The study opens by providing context noting the growing relevance of renewable energy in universities as well as the necessity for effective energy storage systems. The goal is to delve into solar-hydrogen technology outlining its components operating mechanism and benefits over typical storage systems. The chapter on Integration Design examines current university energy infrastructure identifies problems and provides ways for integrating solar-hydrogen systems seamlessly. This integration relies heavily on technological and economic considerations such as a cost-benefit analysis and scalability studies. Case studies include real-world examples performance measurements and significant insights learned from successful implementations. The chapter Future Prospects investigates new trends in solar-hydrogen technology as well as the impact of government legislation providing a forward-looking viewpoint for colleges considering adoption. The report concludes with a summary of significant findings emphasizing the benefits of solar-hydrogen integration and making recommendations for future implementations. The limitation of this research is that it only focuses on design and simulation as a phase of preliminary study.
Development of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers for Hydrogen Storage and Transport

The storage and transfer of energy require a safe technology to mitigate the global environmental issues resulting from the massive application of fossil fuels. Fuel cells have used hydrogen as a clean and efficient energy source. Nevertheless the storage and transport of hydrogen have presented longstanding problems. Recently liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have emerged as a solution to these issues. The hydrogen storage technique in LOHCs is more attractive than those of conventional energy storage systems like liquefaction compression at high pressure and methods of adsorption and absorption. The release and acceptance of hydrogen should be reversible by LOHC molecules following favourable reaction kinetics. LOHCs comprise liquid and semi-liquid organic compounds that are hydrogenated to store hydrogen. These hydrogenated molecules are stored and transported and finally dehydrogenated to release the required hydrogen for supplying energy. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are conducted catalytically for multiple cycles. This review elaborates on the characteristics of different LOHC molecules based on their efficacy as energy generators. Additionally different catalysts used for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are discussed.
Recent Developments in Materials for Physical Hydrogen Storage: A Review

The depletion of reliable energy sources and the environmental and climatic repercussions of polluting energy sources have become global challenges. Hence many countries have adopted various renewable energy sources including hydrogen. Hydrogen is a future energy carrier in the global energy system and has the potential to produce zero carbon emissions. For the non-fossil energy sources hydrogen and electricity are considered the dominant energy carriers for providing end-user services because they can satisfy most of the consumer requirements. Hence the development of both hydrogen production and storage is necessary to meet the standards of a “hydrogen economy”. The physical and chemical absorption of hydrogen in solid storage materials is a promising hydrogen storage method because of the high storage and transportation performance. In this paper physical hydrogen storage materials such as hollow spheres carbon-based materials zeolites and metal– organic frameworks are reviewed. We summarize and discuss the properties hydrogen storage densities at different temperatures and pressures and the fabrication and modification methods of these materials. The challenges associated with these physical hydrogen storage materials are also discussed.
Life Cycle Cost Analysis of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle that Employs Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The use of autonomous vehicles for marine and submarine work has risen considerably in the last decade. Developing new monitoring systems navigation and communications technologies allows a wide range of operational possibilities. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are being used in offshore missions and applications with some innovative purposes by using sustainable and green energy sources. This paper considers an AUV that uses a hydrogen fuel cell achieving zero emissions. This paper analyses the life cycle cost of the UAV and compares it with a UAV powered by conventional energy. The EN 60300-3-3 guidelines have been employed to develop the cost models. The output results show estimations for the net present value under different scenarios and financial strategies. The study has been completed with the discount rate sensibility analysis in terms of financial viability.
