CFD Modelling of Accidental Hydrogen Release from Pipelines

Although today hydrogen is distributed mainly by trailers in the long terms pipeline distribution will be more suitable if large amounts of hydrogen are produced on industrial scale. Therefore from the safety point of view it is essential to compare hydrogen pipelines to natural gas pipelines which are well established today. Within the paper we compare safety implications in accidental situations. We do not look into technological aspects such as compressors or seals.<br/>Using a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tool it is possible to investigate the effects of different properties (density diffusivity viscosity and flammability limits) of hydrogen and methane on the dispersion process. In addition CFD tools allow studying the influence of different release scenarios geometrical configurations and atmospheric conditions. An accidental release from a pipeline is modelled. The release is simulated as a flow though a small hole between the high-pressure pipeline and the environment. A part of the pipeline is included in the simulations as high-pressure reservoir. Due to the large pressure difference between the pipeline and the environment the flow conditions at the release become critical.<br/>For the assumed scenarios larger amount of flammable mixture could be observed in case of hydrogen release. On the other hand because of buoyancy and a higher sonic speed at the release the hydrogen clouds are farther from the ground level or buildings than in case of the methane clouds decreasing the probability of ignition and reducing the flame acceleration due to obstacles in case of ignition. Results on the effect of wind in the release scenarios are also described.

Demonstrated safety in the production distribution and use of hydrogen will be critical to successful implementation of a hydrogen infrastructure. Recognizing the importance of this issue the U.S. Department of Energy has established the Hydrogen Safety Program to ensure safe operations of its hydrogen research and development program as well as to identify and address needs for new knowledge and technologies in the future hydrogen economy. Activities in the Safety Program range across the entire safety spectrum including: R&D devoted to investigation of hydrogen behaviour physical characteristics materials compatibility and risk analysis; inspection and investigation into the safety procedures and practices of all hydrogen projects supported by DOE funds; development of critical technologies for safe hydrogen systems such as sensors and design techniques; and safety training and education for emergency responders code inspectors and the general public. Throughout its activities the Safety Program encourages the open sharing of information to enable widespread benefit from any lessons learned or new information developed.
This paper provides detailed descriptions of the various activities of the DOE Hydrogen Safety Program and includes some example impacts already achieved from its implementation.

Mixing of Dense or Light Gases with Turbulent Air- a Fast-Running Model for Lumped Parameter Codes

The release of gases heavier than air like propane at ground level or lighter than air like hydrogen close to a ceiling can both lead to fire and explosion hazards that must be carefully considered in safety analyses. Even if the simulation of accident scenarios in complex installations and long transients often appears feasible only using lumped parameter computer codes the phenomenon of denser or lighter gas dispersion is not implicitly accounted by these kind of tools. In the aim to set up an ad hoc model to be used in the computer code ECART fluid-dynamic simulations by the commercial FLUENT 6.0 CFD code are used. The reference geometry is related to cavities having variable depth (2 to 4 m) inside long tunnels filled with a gas heavier or lighter than air (propane or hydrogen). Three different geometrical configurations with a cavity width of 3 6 and 9 m are considered imposing different horizontal air stream velocities ranging from 1 to 5 m/s. A stably-stratified flow region is observed inside the cavity during gas shearing. In particular it is found that the density gradient tends to inhibit turbulent mixing thus reducing the dispersion rate. The obtained data are correlated in terms of main dimensionless groups by means of a least squares method. In particular the Sherwood number is correlated as a function of Reynolds a density ratio modified Froude numbers and in terms of the geometrical parameter obtained as a ratio between the depth of the air-dense gas interface and the length of the cavity. This correlation is implemented in the ECART code to add the possibility to simulate large installations during complex transients lasting many hours with reasonable computation time. An example of application to a typical case is presented.
Hydrogen-air Deflagrations in Open Atmosphere- Large Eddy Simulation Analysis of Experimental Data

The largest known experiment on hydrogen-air deflagration in the open atmosphere has been analysed by means of the large eddy simulation (LES). The combustion model is based on the progress variable equation to simulate a premixed flame front propagation and the gradient method to decouple the physical combustion rate from numerical peculiarities. The hydrodynamic instability has been partially resolved by LES and unresolved effects have been modelled by Yakhot's turbulent premixed combustion model. The main contributor to high flame propagation velocity is the additional turbulence generated by the flame front itself. It has been modelled based on the maximum flame wrinkling factor predicted by Karlovitz et al. theory and the transitional distance reported by Gostintsev with colleagues. Simulations are in a good agreement with experimental data on flame propagation dynamics flame shape and outgoing pressure wave peaks and structure. The model is built from the first principles and no adjustable parameters were applied to get agreement with the experiment.

In the short term in the absence of a hydrogen distribution network these fuelling stations will have to be supplied by liquid hydrogen road tanker. Such a development will increase the number of tanker offloading operations significantly and these may need to be performed in close proximity to the general public.<br/>The aim of this work is to identify and address hazards relating to the storage and transport of bulk liquid hydrogen (LH2) that are associated with hydrogen refuelling stations located in urban environments. Experimental results will inform the wider hydrogen community and contribute to the development of more robust modelling tools. The results will also help to update and develop guidance for codes and standards.<br/>The first phase of the project was to develop an experimental and modelling strategy for the issues associated with liquid hydrogen spills; this was documented in HSL report XS/10/06[1].<br/>The second phase of the project was to produce a position paper on the hazards of liquid hydrogen which was published in 2009 XS/09/72[2]. This was also published as a HSE research report RR769 in 2010[3].<br/>This report details experiments performed to investigate spills of liquid hydrogen at a rate of 60 litres per minute. Measurements were made on unignited releases which included concentration of hydrogen in air thermal gradient in the concrete substrate liquid pool formation and temperatures within the pool. Computational modelling of the unignited releases has been undertaken at HSL and reported in MSU/12/01 [4]. Ignited releases of hydrogen have also been performed as part of this project; the results and findings from this work are reported in XS/11/77[5].

Such a development will increase the number of tanker offloading operations significantly and these may need to be performed in close proximity to the general public.<br/>Several research projects have been undertaken already at HSL with the aim of identifying and addressing hazards relating to the storage and transport of bulk LH2 that are associated with hydrogen refuelling stations located in urban environments.<br/>The first phase of the research was to produce a position paper on the hazards of LH2 (Pritchard and Rattigan 2009). This was published as an HSE research report RR769 in 2010. <br/>The second phase developed an experimental and modelling strategy for issues associated with LH2 spills and was published as an internal report HSL XS/10/06. The subsequent experimental work is a direct implementation of that strategy. LH2 was first investigated experimentally (Royle and Willoughby 2012 HSL XS/11/70) as large-scale spills of LH2 at a rate of 60 litres per minute. Measurements were made on unignited releases which included the concentration of hydrogen in air thermal gradients in the concrete substrate liquid pool formation and temperatures within the pool. Computational modelling on the un-ignited spills was also performed (Batt and Webber 2012 HSL MSU/12/01).<br/>The experimental work on ignited releases of LH2 detailed in this report is a direct continuation of the work performed by Royle and Willoughby.<br/>The aim of this work was to determine the hazards and severity of a realistic ignited spill of LH2 focussing on; flammability limits of an LH2 vapour cloud flame speeds through an LH2 vapour cloud and subsequent radiative heat and overpressures after ignition. The results of the experimentation will inform the wider hydrogen community and contribute to the development of more robust modelling tools. The results will also help to update and develop guidance for codes and standards.
Safety and Environmental Standards for Fuel Storage Sites

The main purpose of this report is to specify the minimum standards of control which should be in place at all establishments storing large volumes of gasoline.<br/>The PSLG also considered other substances capable of giving rise to a large flammable vapour cloud in the event of a loss of primary containment. However to ensure priority was given to improving standards of control to tanks storing gasoline PSLG has yet to determine the scale and application of this guidance to such substances. It is possible that a limited number of other substances (with specific physical properties and storage arrangements) will be addressed in the future.<br/>This report also provides guidance on good practice in relation to secondary and tertiary containment for facilities covered by the CA Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Parts of this guidance may also be relevant to other major hazard establishments.
Numerical Analysis of the Effects of Ship Motion on Hydrogen Release and Dispersion in an Enclosed Area

Hydrogen is an alternative to conventional heavy marine fuel oil following the initial strategy of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Although hydrogen energy has many advantages (zero-emission high efficiency and low noise) it has considerable fire and explosion risks due to its thermal and chemical characteristics (wide flammable concentration range and low ignition energy). Thus safety is a key concern related to the use of hydrogen. Whereas most previous studies focused on the terrestrial environment we aim to analyze the effects of the ship’s motion on hydrogen dispersion (using commercial FLUENT code) in an enclosed area. When compared to the steady state our results revealed that hydrogen reached specific sensors in 63% and 52% less time depending on vessel motion type and direction. Since ships carry and use a large amount of hydrogen as a power source the risk of hydrogen leakage from collision or damage necessitates studying the correspondence between leakage diffusion and motion characteristics of the ship to position the sensor correctly.

Hydrogen has the potential to be used by many countries as part of decarbonising the future energy system. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel ‘vector’ to store and transport energy produced in low-carbon ways. This could be particularly important in applications such as heating and transport where other solutions for low and zero carbon emission are difficult. To enable the safe uptake of hydrogen technologies it is important to develop the international scientific evidence base on the potential risks to safety and how to control them effectively. The International Association for Hydrogen Safety (known as IA HySAFE) is leading global efforts to ensure this. HSE hosted the 2018 IA HySAFE Biennial Research Priorities Workshop. A panel of international experts presented during nine key topic sessions: (1) Industrial and National Programmes; (2) Applications; (3) Storage; (4) Accident Physics – Gas Phase; (5) Accident Physics – Liquid/ Cryogenic Behaviour; (6) Materials; (7) Mitigation Sensors Hazard Prevention and Risk Reduction; (8) Integrated Tools for Hazard and Risk Assessment; (9) General Aspects of Safety.<br/>This report gives an overview of each topic made by the session chairperson. It also gives further analysis of the totality of the evidence presented. The workshop outputs are shaping international activities on hydrogen safety. They are helping key stakeholders to identify gaps in knowledge and expertise and to understand and plan for potential safety challenges associated with the global expansion of hydrogen in the energy system.
Influence of Initial Pressure in Hydrogen/Air flame Acceleration During Severe Accident in Nuclear Power Plant

Flame acceleration (FA) and explosion of hydrogen/air mixtures remain key issues for severe accident management in nuclear power plants. Empirical criteria were developed in the early 2000s by Dorofeev and colleagues providing effective tools to discern possible FA or DDT (Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition) scenarios. A large experimental database composed mainly of middle-scale experiments in obstacle-laden ducts at atmospheric pressure condition has been used to validate these criteria. However during a severe accident the high release rate of steam and non-condensable gases into the containment can result in pressure increase up to 5 bar abs. In the present work the influence of the unburnt gas initial pressure on flame propagation mechanisms was experimentally investigated. Premixed hydrogen/air mixtures with hydrogen concentration close to 11% and 15% were considered. From the literature we know that these flames are supposed to accelerate up to Chapman-Jouguet deflagration velocity in long obstacle-laden tubes at initial atmospheric conditions. Varying the pressure in the fresh gas in the range 0.6–4 bar no effects on the flame acceleration phase were observed. However as the initial pressure was increased we observed a decrease in the flame velocity close to the end of the tube. The pressure increase due to the combustion reaction was found to be proportional to the initial pressure according to adiabatic isochoric complete combustion.
Simulation-based Safety Investigation of a Hydrogen Fueling Station with an On-site Hydrogen Production System Involving Methylcyclohexane

Adequate safety measures are crucial for preventing major accidents at hydrogen fuelling stations. In particular risk analysis of the domino effect at hydrogen fuelling stations is essential because knock-on accidents are likely to intensify the consequences of a relatively small incident. Several risk assessment studies have focused on hydrogen fuelling stations but none have investigated accidental scenarios related to the domino effect at such stations. Therefore the purpose of this study is to identify a domino effect scenario analyze the scenario by using simulations and propose safety measures for preventing and mitigating of the scenario. In this hazard identification study we identified the domino effect scenario of a hydrogen fuelling station with an on-site hydrogen production system involving methylcyclohexane and investigated through simulations of the scenario. The simulations revealed that a pool fire of methylcyclohexane or toluene can damage the process equipment and that thermal radiation may cause the pressurized hydrogen tanks to rupture. The rupture-type vent system can serve as a critical safety measure for preventing and mitigating the examined scenario.
Estimation of Final Hydrogen Temperature From Refueling Parameters

Compressed hydrogen storage is currently widely used in fuel cell vehicles due to its simplicity in tank structure and refuelling process. For safety reason the final gas temperature in the hydrogen tank during vehicle refuelling must be maintained under a certain limit e.g. 85 °C. Many experiments have been performed to find the relations between the final gas temperature in the hydrogen tank and refueling conditions. The analytical solution of the hydrogen temperature in the tank can be obtained from the simplified thermodynamic model of a compressed hydrogen storage tank and it serves as function formula to fit experimental temperatures. From the analytical solution the final hydrogen temperature can be expressed as a weighted average form of initial temperature inflow temperature and ambient temperature inspired by the rule of mixtures. The weighted factors are related to other refuelling parameters such as initial mass initial pressure refuelling time refuelling mass rate average pressure ramp rate (APRR) final mass final pressure etc. The function formula coming from the analytical solution of the thermodynamic model is more meaningful physically and more efficient mathematically in fitting experimental temperatures. The simple uniform formula inspired by the concept of the rule of mixture and its weighted factors obtained from the analytical solution of lumped parameter thermodynamics model is representatively used to fit the experimental and simulated results in publication. Estimation of final hydrogen temperature from refuelling parameters based on the rule of mixtures is simple and practical for controlling the maximum temperature and for ensuring hydrogen safety during fast filling process.
Evaluating Uncertainty in Accident Rate Estimation at Hydrogen Refueling Station Using Time Correlation Model

Hydrogen as a future energy carrier is receiving a significant amount of attention in Japan. From the viewpoint of safety risk evaluation is required in order to increase the number of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs) implemented in Japan. Collecting data about accidents in the past will provide a hint to understand the trend in the possibility of accidents occurrence by identifying its operation time However in new technology; accident rate estimation can have a high degree of uncertainty due to absence of major accident direct data in the late operational period. The uncertainty in the estimation is proportional to the data unavailability which increases over long operation period due to decrease in number of stations. In this paper a suitable time correlation model is adopted in the estimation to reflect lack (due to the limited operation period of HRS) or abundance of accident data which is not well supported by conventional approaches. The model adopted in this paper shows that the uncertainty in the estimation increases when the operation time is long owing to the decreasing data.
Hazard Identification Study for Risk Assessment of a Hybrid Gasoline-hydrogen Fueling Station with an Onsite Hydrogen Production System Using Organic Hydride

Hydrogen infrastructures are important for the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles. Hydrogen storage and transportation are significant topics because it is difficult to safely and effectively treat large amounts of hydrogen because of hydrogen hazards. An organic chemical hydride method keeps and provides hydrogen using hydrogenation and dehydrogenation chemical reactions with aromatic compounds. This method has advantages in that the conventional petrochemical products are used as a hydrogen carrier and petrochemicals are more easily treated than hydrogen because of low hazards. Hydrogen fueling stations are also crucial infrastructures for hydrogen supply. In Japan hybrid gasoline-hydrogen fuelling stations are needed for effective space utilization in urban areas. It is essential to address the safety issues of hybrid fueling stations for inherently safer station construction. We focused on a hybrid gasoline-hydrogen fuelling station with an on-site hydrogen production system using methylcyclohexane as an organic chemical hydride. The purpose of this study is to reveal unique hybrid risks in the station with a hazard identification study (HAZID study). As a result of the HAZID study we identified 314 accident scenarios involving gasoline and organic chemical hydride systems. In addition we suggested improvement safety measures for uniquely worst-case accident scenarios to prevent and mitigate the scenarios.
Modeling Thermal Response of Polymer Composite Hydrogen Cylinders

With the anticipated introduction of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the market there is an increasing need to address the fire resistance of hydrogen cylinders for onboard storage. Sufficient fire resistance is essential to ensure safe evacuation in the event of car fire accidents. The authors have developed a Finite Element (FE) model for predicting the thermal response of composite hydrogen cylinders within the frame of the open source FE code Elmer. The model accounts for the decomposition of the polymer matrix and effects of volatile gas transport in the composite. Model comparison with experimental data has been conducted using a classical one-dimensional test case of polymer composite subjected to fire. The validated model was then used to analyze a type-4 hydrogen cylinder subjected to an engulfing external propane fire mimicking a published cylinder fire experiment. The external flame is modelled and simulated using the open source code FireFOAM. A simplified failure criteria based on internal pressure increase is subsequently used to determine the cylinder fire resistance.
Validation of Leading Point Concept in RANS Simulations of Highly Turbulent Lean Syngas-air Flames with Well-pronounced Diffusional-thermal Effects

While significant increase in turbulent burning rate in lean premixed flames of hydrogen or hydrogen-containing fuel blends is well documented in various experiments and can be explained by highlighting local diffusional-thermal effects capabilities of the vast majority of available models of turbulent combustion for predicting this increase have not yet been documented in numerical simulations. To fill this knowledge gap a well-validated Turbulent Flame Closure (TFC) model of the influence of turbulence on premixed combustion which however does not address the diffusional-thermal effects is combined with the leading point concept which highlights strongly perturbed leading flame kernels whose local structure and burning rate are significantly affected by the diffusional-thermal effects. More specifically within the framework of the leading point concept local consumption velocity is computed in extremely strained laminar flames by adopting detailed combustion chemistry and subsequently the computed velocity is used as an input parameter of the TFC model. The combined model is tested in RANS simulations of highly turbulent lean syngas-air flames that were experimentally investigated at Georgia Tech. The tests are performed for four different values of the inlet rms turbulent velocities different turbulence length scales normal and elevated (up to 10 atm) pressures various H2/CO ratios ranging from 30/70 to 90/10 and various equivalence ratios ranging from 0.40 to 0.80. All in all the performed 33 tests indicate that the studied combination of the leading point concept and the TFC model can predict well-pronounced diffusional-thermal effects in lean highly turbulent syngas-air flames with these results being obtained using the same value of a single constant of the combined model in all cases. In particular the model well predicts a significant increase in the bulk turbulent consumption velocity when increasing the H2/CO ratio but retaining the same value of the laminar flame speed.
Three-dimensional Structures of N2-Diluted Stoichiometric H2-O2 Flames in Narrow Channels

Flame propagation and acceleration in unobstructed channels/tubes is usually assumed as symmetric. A fully optically accessible narrow channel that allows to perform simultaneous high-speed schlieren visualization from two mutually perpendicular directions was built to asses the validity of the aforementioned assumption. Here we provide experimental evidence of the interesting three-dimensional structures and asymmetries that develop during the acceleration phase and show how these may control detonation onset in N2-diluted stoichiometric H2-O2 mixtures.
Development of Technical Regulations for Fuel Cell Motorcycles in Japan—Hydrogen Safety

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are expected to play an important role in the future and thus have improved significantly over the past years. Hydrogen fuel cell motorcycles with a small container for compressed hydrogen gas have been developed in Japan along with related regulations. As a result national regulations have been established in Japan after discussions with Japanese motorcycle companies stakeholders and experts. The concept of Japanese regulations was proposed internationally and a new international regulation on hydrogen-fueled motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems based on this concept are also established as United Nations Regulation No. 146. In this paper several technical regulations on hydrogen safety specific to fuel cell motorcycles incorporating compressed hydrogen storage systems are summarized. The unique characteristics of these motorcycles e.g. small body light weight and tendency to overturn easily are considered in these regulations.
LES Simulation of Buoyancy Jet From Unintended Hydrogen Release with GASFLOW-MPI

Hydrogen leakage is a key safety issue for hydrogen energy application. For hydrogen leakage hydrogen releases with low momentum hence the development of the leakage jet is dominated by both initial momentum and buoyancy. It is important for a computational code to capture the flow characteristics transiting from momentum-dominated jet to buoyancy dominated plume during leakage. GASFLOW-MPI is a parallel computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code which is well validated and widely used for hydrogen safety analysis. In this paper its capability for small scale hydrogen leakage is validated with unintended hydrogen release experiment. In the experiment pure hydrogen is released into surrounding stagnant air through a jet tube on a honeycomb plate with various Froude numbers (Fr). The flow can be fully momentum-dominated at the beginning while the influence of buoyancy increases with the Fr decreases along the streamline. Several quantities of interest including velocity along the centerline radial profiles of the time-averaged H2 mass fraction are obtained to compare with experimental data. The good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental data indicates that GASFLOW-MPI can successfully simulate hydrogen turbulent dispersion driven by both momentum and buoyant force. Different turbulent models i.e. k-ε LES and DES model are analyzed for code performance the result shows that all these three models are adequate for hydrogen leakage simulation k-ε simulation is sufficient for industrial applications while LES model can be adopted for detail analysis for a jet/plume study like entrainment. The DES model possesses both characters of the former two model only the performance of its result depends on the grid refinement.
Modeling of Hydrogen Flame Dynamics in Narrow Gap with Bendable Walls

A concept of volume porosity together with model of moving walls were elaborated and implemented into the COM3D code. Additionally to that a support of real-time data exchange with finite-element code ABAQUS - © Dassault Systèmes provided possibility to perform simulations of the gas-dynamic simultaneously with geometrical adaptation of environmental conditions. Based on the data obtained in the KIT combustion experiments in narrow gaps the authors performed a series of the simulation on the combustion in the corresponding conditions. Obtained numerical results demonstrated good agreement with the observed experimental data. These data were also compared with those obtained in the simulation without wall bending where simulation showed considerably different combustion regime. Application of the developed technique allows to obtain results unreachable without accounting on wall displacements which demonstrates massive over-estimation of the pressures observed during flame propagation.

- Hydrogen is seen by many as the answer to the environmental problems of reliance on fossil fuels for energy needs. A great deal of effort is currently being invested in research into all areas of the hydrogen economy such as fuel cells hydrogen generation transportation and storage.
- Fuel cells have the potential to provide power for a very wide range of applications ranging from small portable electronics devices to large stationary electricity production and vehicles covering the whole range of road vehicles and possibly extending to rail marine and even aviation.
- The main obstacles to achieving a viable hydrogen economy are costs of producing hydrogen from renewable sources issues relating to transportation and storage due to the low energy density of hydrogen gas and the cost and reliability of fuel cells.
- The main material considerations relating to the use of hydrogen are hydrogen embrittlement material properties at cryogenic temperatures (due to use of liquid hydrogen) and permeability.
- A number of new materials are likely to come to prominence in a hydrogen economy; high performance composites are likely to be used extensively for high pressure hydrogen cylinders new materials or combinations of materials may be used for hydrogen pipelines and a range of new materials are currently being considered for hydrogen storage such as metal hydrides and carbon nanotubes.
- Due to the effect of hydrogen on materials it is important to test any materials in the environment in which they would be used. Depending on the type of test this could require the use of very specialist expensive equipment.
Vented Explosion of Hydrogen/Air Mixture: An Inter Comparison Benchmark Exercise

Explosion venting is a widely used mitigation solution in the process industry to protect indoor equipment or buildings from excessive internal pressure caused by accidental explosions. However vented explosions are very complicated to model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the framework of a French working group the main target of this investigation is to assess the predictive capabilities of five CFD codes used by five different organizations by means of comparison with recent experimental data. On this basis several recommendations for the CFD modelling of vented explosions are suggested.
Modelling and Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Jet Fires for Industrial Safety Analyses – Comparison with Large-scale Experiments

Reliable predictive tools for hydrogen safety engineering are needed to meet increased and more widespread use of hydrogen in the society. Industrial models and methods used to establish thermal radiation hazard safety distances from hydrogen jet fires are often based on models previously developed for hydrocarbon jet fires. Their capability of predicting radiative heat fluxes from hydrogen jet fires has often only been validated against small-scale or medium-scale jet flame experiments. However large-scale hydrogen jet fire experiments have shown that thermal radiation levels can be significantly higher than one might expect from extrapolation of experience on smaller hydrogen flames. Here two large-scale horizontal hydrogen jet fires (from a 20.9 mm and a 52.5 mm diameter release respectively) have been modelled and simulated with the advanced industrial CFD code KAMELEON FIREEX KFX® based on the Eddy Dissipation Concept by Magnussen for turbulent combustion modelling. The modelling of the high-pressure hydrogen gas releases is based on a pseudo-source concept using real-gas thermodynamic data for hydrogen. The discrete transport method of Lockwood and Shah is used to calculate the radiative heat transfer and radiative properties of water vapour are modelled according to Leckner. The predicted thermal radiation is compared to data from large-scale hydrogen jet fire experiments and discussed. This work was conducted as part of a KFX-H2 R&D project supported by the Research Council of Norway.
Non-adiabatic Under-expanded Jet Theory for Blowdown and Fire Resistance Rating of Hydrogen Tank

The European Regulations on type-approval of hydrogen vehicles require thermally-activated pressure relief device (TPRD) to be installed on hydrogen onboard storage tanks to release its content in a fire event to prevent its catastrophic rupture. The aim of this study is to develop a model for design of an inherently safer system TPRD-storage tank. Parameters of tank materials and hydrogen external heat flux from the fire to the tank wall TPRD diameter time to initiate TPRD are input parameters of the model. The energy conservation equation and real gas equation of state are employed to describe the dynamic behaviour of the system. The under-expanded jet theory developed previously for adiabatic release from a storage tank is applied here to non-adiabatic blowdown of a tank in a fire. Unsteady heat transfer equation is used to calculate heat conduction through the tank wall. It includes the decomposition of the wall material due to high heat flux. The convective heat transfer between tank wall and hydrogen is modelled through the dimensionless Nusselt number correlations. The model is validated against two types of experiments i.e. realistic (non-adiabatic) blowdown of high-pressure storage tank and failure of a tank without TPRD in a fire. The model is confirmed to be time efficient for computations and accurately predicts the dynamic pressure and temperature of the gas inside the tank temperature profile within the tank wall time to tank rupture in a fire and the blowdown time.
Validation of a 3d Multiphase-multicomponent CFD Model for Accidental Liquid and Gaseous Hydrogen Releases

As hydrogen-air mixtures are flammable in a wide range of concentrations and the minimum ignition energy is low compared to hydrocarbon fuels the safe handling of hydrogen is of utmost importance. Additional hazards may arise with the accidental spill of liquid hydrogen. Such a release of LH2 leads to a formation of a cryogenic pool a dynamic vaporization process and consequently a dispersion of gaseous hydrogen into the environment. Several LH2 release experiments as well as modelling approaches address this phenomenology. In contrast to existing approaches a new CFD model capable of simulating liquid and gaseous distribution was developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich. It is validated against existing experiments and yields no substantial lacks in the physical model and reveals a qualitatively consistent prediction. Nevertheless the deviation between experiment and simulation raises questions on the completeness of the database in particular with regard to the boundary conditions and available measurements.
Large Eddy Simulations of Asymmetric Turbulent Hydrogen Jets Issuing from Realistic Pipe Geometries

In the current study a Large Eddy Simulation strategy is applied to model the dispersion of compressible turbulent hydrogen jets issuing from realistic pipe geometries. The work is novel as it explores the effect of jet densities and Reynolds numbers on vertical buoyant jets as they emerge from the outer wall of a pipe through a round orifice perpendicular to the mean flow within the pipe. An efficient Godunov solver is used and coupled with Adaptive Mesh Refinement to provide high resolution solutions only in areas of interest. The numerical results are validated against physical experiments of air and helium which allows a degree of confidence in analysing the data obtained for hydrogen releases. The results show that the jets investigated are always asymmetric. Thus significant discrepancies exist when applying conventional round jet assumptions to determine statistical properties associated with gas leaks from pipelines.
Investigation of Turbulent Premixed Methane/Air and Hydrogen-enriched Methane/Air Flames in a Laboratory-scale Gas Turbine Model Combustor

Methane and hydrogen-enriched (25 vol% and 50 vol% H2 -enriched CH4) methane/air premixed flames were investigated in a gas turbine model combustor under atmospheric conditions. The flame operability ranges were mapped at different Reynold numbers (Re) showing the dependence on Re and H2 concentrations. The effects of equivalence ratio (Φ) Re and H2 enrichment on flame structure were examined employing OH-PLIF measurement. For CH4/air cases the flame was stabilized with an M shape; while for H2 -enriched cases the flame transitions to a П shape above a specific Φ. This transition was observed to influence significantly the flashback limits. The flame shape transition is most likely a result of H2 enrichment occurring due to the increase in flame speed higher resistance of the flame to the strain rate and change in the inner recirculation zone. Flow fields of CH4/air flames were compared between low and high Re cases employing high-speed PIV. The flashback events led by two mechanisms (combustion-induced vortex breakdown CIVB and boundary-layer flashback BLF) were observed and recorded using high-speed OH chemiluminescence imaging. It was found that the CIVB flashback occurred only for CH4 flames with M shape whereas the BLF occurs for all H2 -enriched flames with П shape.
Moving Gas Turbine Package from Conventional Gas to Hydrogen Blend

The current greatest challenge that all gas turbine manufactures and users have in front of them for the years to come is the energy transition while reducing CO2 footprint and to contrast climate change. To this aim the introduction of hydrogen as fuel gas (or its blend) is playing a very important role. The benefit from an environmental point of view is undisputed but the presence of hydrogen introduces a series of safety related aspects to be considered for the design of all systems of a gas turbine package. Most of the design standards developed and adopted in the past are based on conventional natural gas however physical properties of hydrogen require to analyze additional aspects or revise the current ones. In this context the design for safety is paramount as it is strongly impacted by the low energy ignition of hydrogen blend fuels. Baker Hughes has built its experience on several sites different Customers and applications currently installed. These gas turbines run with a variety of hydrogen blends with concentration as high as 100% hydrogen. Baker Hughes has achieved several milestones moving from design to experimental set up leveraging the internal infrastructures consolidating design assumptions. In this work the critical aspects such as material selection instrumentation electrical devices and components are discussed in the framework of package safety with the aim to evolve conventional design minimizing the impacts on package configurations.
On the Evaluation of ALD TiO 2 , ZrO 2 and HfO 2 Coatings on Corrosion and Cytotoxicity Performances

Magnesium alloys have been widely studied as materials for temporary implants but their use has been limited by their corrosion rate. Recently coatings have been proven to provide an effective barrier. Though only little explored in the field Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) stands out as a coating technology due to the outstanding film conformality and density achievable. Here we provide first insights into the corrosion behavior and the induced biological response of 100 nm thick ALD TiO2 HfO2 and ZrO2 coatings on AZ31 alloy by means of potentiodynamic polarization curves electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) hydrogen evolution and MTS colorimetric assay with L929 cells. All three coatings improve the corrosion behavior and cytotoxicity of the alloy. Particularly HfO2 coatings were characterized by the highest corrosion resistance and cell viability slightly higher than those of ZrO2 coatings. TiO2 was characterized by the lowest corrosion improvements and though generally considered a biocompatible coating was found to not meet the demands for cellular applications (it was characterized by grade 3 cytotoxicity after 5 days of culture). These results reveal a strong link between biocompatibility and corrosion resistance and entail the need of taking the latter into consideration in the choice of a biocompatible coating to protect degradable Mg-based alloys.
On Flame Ball-to-Deflagration Transition in Hydrogen-air Mixtures

Ultra-lean hydrogen-air combustion is characterized by two phenomena: the difference in upward and downward flame propagation concentration limits and the incomplete combustion. The clear answers on the two basic questions are still absent: What is a reason and what is a mechanism for their manifestation? Problem statement and the principal research topics of the Flame Ball to Deflagration Transition (FBDT) phenomenon in gaseous hydrogen-air mixtures are presented. The non-empirical concept of the fundamental concentration limits discriminates two basic low-speed laminar combustion patterns - self-propagating locally planar deflagration fronts and drifting locally spherical flame balls. To understand - at what critical conditions and how the baric deflagrations are transforming into iso- baric flame balls? - the photographic studies of the quasi-2-dim flames freely propagating outward radially via thin horizontal channel were performed. For gradual increase of initial hydrogen concentration from 3 to 12 vol.% the three representative morphological types of combustion (star-like dendrite-like and quasi-homogeneous) and two characteristic processes of reaction front bifurcation were revealed. Key elements of the FBDT mechanism both for 2-dim and 3-dim combustion are the following. Locally spherical ""leading centres"" (drifting flame balls) are the ""elementary building blocks"" of all ultra-lean flames. System of the drifting flame balls is formed due to primary bifurcation of the pre-flame kernel just after ignition. Subsequent mutual dynamics and overall morphology of the ultra-lean flames are governed by competitive non-local interactions of the individual drifting flame balls and their secondary/tertiary/etc. bifurcations defined by initial stoichiometry."
Investigation into the Cross-sensitivity of Domestic Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Hydrogen

Preliminary research suggests domestic carbon monoxide detectors with an electrochemical sensor are approximately 10 -20% sensitive to hydrogen atmospheres in their factory configuration. That is the display on a carbon monoxide detector would give a carbon monoxide reading of approximately 10-20% of the concentration of hydrogen it is exposed to. Current British standards require detectors to sound an alarm within three minutes when subjected to a continuous concentration of ≥ 300 ppm CO. This would equate to a concentration of 1500-3000 ppm hydrogen in air or approximately 3.75 – 7% %LEL. The current evacuation criteria for a natural gas leak in a domestic property is 20 %LEL indicating that standard carbon monoxide detectors could be used as cheap and reliable early warning systems for hydrogen leaks. Given the wide use of carbon monoxide detectors and the affordability of the devices the use of carbon monoxide detectors for hydrogen detection is of particular interest as the UK drives towards energy decarbonisation. Experiments to determine the exact sensitivity of a range of the most common domestic carbon monoxide detectors have been completed by DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing. Determining the effects of repeated exposure to varying concentrations of hydrogen in air on the sensitivity of electrochemical sensors allows recommendations to be made on their adoption as hydrogen detectors. Changing the catalysts used within the electrochemical cell would improve the sensitivity to hydrogen however simply calibrating the sensor to report a concentration of hydrogen rather than carbon monoxide would represent no additional costs to manufacturers. Having determined the suitability of such sensors at an early stage; the technology can then be linked with other technological developments required for the change to hydrogen for domestic heating (e.g. change in metering equipment and appliances). This report finds that from five simple and widely available carbon monoxide detectors the lowest sensitivity to hydrogen measured at the concentration required to sound an alarm within three minutes was approximately 10%. It was also discovered that as the hydrogen concentration was increased over the range tested the sensitivity to hydrogen also increased. It is proposed that coupling these devices with other elements of the domestic gas system would allow actions such as remote meter isolation or automatic warning signals sent to response services would provide a reliable and inherently safe system for protecting occupants as gas networks transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect it is noted that wireless linking of smoke and heat detectors for domestic application is already widely available in low-cost devices. This could be extended to CO detectors adapted for hydrogen use.
Improved Monitoring and Diagnosis of Transformer Solid Insulation Using Pertinent Chemical Indicators

Transformers are generally considered to be the costliest assets in a power network. The lifetime of a transformer is mainly attributable to the condition of its solid insulation which in turn is measured and described according to the degree of polymerization (DP) of the cellulose. Since the determination of the DP index is complex and time-consuming and requires the transformer to be taken out of service utilities prefer indirect and non-invasive methods of determining the DP based on the byproduct of cellulose aging. This paper analyzes solid insulation degradation by measuring the furan concentration recently introduced methanol and dissolved gases like carbon oxides and hydrogen in the insulating oil. A group of service-aged distribution transformers were selected for practical investigation based on oil samples and different kinds of tests. Based on the maintenance and planning strategy of the power utility and a weighted combination of measured chemical indicators a neural network was also developed to categorize the state of the transformer in certain classes. The method proved to be able to improve the diagnostic capability of chemical indicators thus providing power utilities with more reliable maintenance tools and avoiding catastrophic failure of transformers.
Review of the Durability of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell in Long-Term Operation: Main Influencing Parameters and Testing Protocols

Durability is the most pressing issue preventing the efficient commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stationary and transportation applications. A big barrier to overcoming the durability limitations is gaining a better understanding of failure modes for user profiles. In addition durability test protocols for determining the lifetime of PEMFCs are important factors in the development of the technology. These methods are designed to gather enough data about the cell/stack to understand its efficiency and durability without causing it to fail. They also provide some indication of the cell/stack’s age in terms of changes in performance over time. Based on a study of the literature the fundamental factors influencing PEMFC long-term durability and the durability test protocols for both PEMFC stationary and transportation applications were discussed and outlined in depth in this review. This brief analysis should provide engineers and researchers with a fast overview as well as a useful toolbox for investigating PEMFC durability issues.
Evaluation of Safety Measures of a Hydrogen Fueling Station Using Physical Modeling

Hydrogen fueling stations are essential for operating fuel cell vehicles. If multiple safety measures in a hydrogen fueling station fail simultaneously it could lead to severe consequences. To analyze the risk of such a situation we developed a physical model of a hydrogen fueling station which when using the temperature pressure and flow rate of hydrogen could be simulated under normal and abnormal operating states. The physical model was validated by comparing the analytical results with the experimental results of an actual hydrogen fueling station. By combining the physical model with a statistical method we evaluated the significance of the safety measures in the event wherein multiple safety measures fail simultaneously. We determined the combinations of failures of safety measures that could lead to accidents and suggested a measure for preventing and mitigating the accident scenario.
Hydrogen Dispersion and Ventilation Effects in Enclosures under Different Release Conditions

Hydrogen is an explosive gas which could create extremely hazardous conditions when released into an enclosure. Full-scale experiments of hydrogen release and dispersion in the confined space were conducted. The experiments were performed for hydrogen release outflow of 63 × 10−3 m3/s through a single nozzle and multi-point release way optionally. It was found that the hydrogen dispersion in an enclosure strongly depends on the gas release way. Significantly higher hydrogen stratification is observed in a single nozzle release than in the case of the multi-point release when the gas concentration becomes more uniform in the entire enclosure volume. The experimental results were confirmed on the basis of Froud number analysis. The CFD simulations realized with the FDS code by NIST allowed visualization of the experimental hydrogen dispersion phenomenon and confirmed that the varied distribution of hydrogen did not affect the effectiveness of the accidental mechanical ventilation system applied in the tested room.
Hy4Heat Safety Assessment: Conclusions Report (Incorporating Quantitative Risk Assessment) - Work Package 7

The summary reports (the Precis and the Safety Assessment Conclusions Report) bring together all the findings of the work and should be looked to for context by all readers. The technical reports should be read in conjunction with the summary reports. While the summary reports are made as accessible as possible for general readers the technical reports may be most accessible for readers with a degree of technical subject matter understanding. All of the safety assessment reports have now been reviewed by the HSE.<br/><br/>A comparative risk assessment of natural gas versus hydrogen gas including a quantitative risk assessment; and identification of control measures to reduce risk and manage hydrogen gas safety for a community demonstration.
Large-eddy Simulation of Tri-fuel Combustion: Diesel Spray Assisted Ignition of Methanol-hydrogen Blends

Development of marine engines could largely benefit from the broader usage of methanol and hydrogen which are both potential energy carriers. Here numerical results are presented on tri-fuel (TF) ignition using large-eddy simulation (LES) and finite-rate chemistry. Zero-dimensional (0D) and three-dimensional (3D) simulations for n-dodecane spray ignition of methanol/hydrogen blends are performed. 0D results reveal the beneficial role of hydrogen addition in facilitating methanol ignition. Based on LES the following findings are reported: 1) Hydrogen promotes TF ignition significantly for molar blending ratios βX = [H2]/([H2]+[CH3OH]) ≥0.8. 2) For βX = 0 unfavorable heat generation in ambient methanol is noted. We provide evidence that excessive hydrogen enrichment (βX ≥ 0.94) potentially avoids this behavior consistent with 0D results. 3) Ignition delay time is advanced by 23–26% with shorter spray vapor penetrations (10–15%) through hydrogen mass blending ratios 0.25/0.5/1.0. 4) Last adding hydrogen increases shares of lower and higher temperature chemistry modes to total heat release.
Hy4Heat Hydrogen Colourant Report

As part of Work Package 2 (WP2) of the Hy4Heat programme DNV produced a substantive report regarding colourant within a potential hydrogen gas network within the UK. Considering the advances within the hydrogen industry over the past year this covering document provides an update to the results as presented by DNV based on current industry progress and research.
The Hydrogen Colourant report was a study to determine if there is a requirement for adding a colourant to hydrogen to ensure that safe burning and user acceptance is achieved and to investigate the optimum solution if a colourant is required. The recommendation is that adding colourant to a future hydrogen gas network for use within buildings is not necessary if engineering measures are put in place to enable safe appliance operation."

Combustion Characteristics of Premixed Hydrogen/Air in an Undulate Microchannel

This work reports a numerical investigation of microcombustion in an undulate microchannel using premixed hydrogen and air to understand the effect of the burner design on the flame in order to obtain stability of the flame. The simulations were performed for a fixed equivalence ratio and a hyperbolic temperature profile imposed at the microchannel walls in order to mimic the heat external losses occurred in experimental setups. Due to the complexity of the flow dynamics combined with the combustion behavior the present study focuses on understanding the effect of the fuel inlet rate on the flame characteristics keeping other parameters constant. The results presented stable flame structure regardless of the inlet velocity for this type of design meaning that a significant reduction in the heat flux losses through the walls occurred allowing the design of new simpler systems. The increase in inlet velocity increased the flame extension with the flame being stretched along the microchannel. For higher velocities flame separation was observed with two detected different combustion zones and the temperature profiles along the burner centerline presented a non-monotonic decrease due to the dynamics of the vortices observed in the convex regions of the undulated geometry walls. The geometry effects on the flame structure flow field thermal evolution and species distribution for different inlet velocities are reported and discussed.
Cold Hydrogen Blowdown Release: An Inter-comparison Study

Hydrogen dispersion in stagnant environment resulting from blowdown of a vessel storing the gas at cryogenic temperature is simulated using different CFD codes and modelling strategies. The simulations are based on the DISCHA experiments that were carried out by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Pro-Science (PS). The selected test for the current study involves hydrogen release from a 2.815 dm3 volume tank with an initial pressure of 200 barg and temperature 80 K. During the release the hydrogen pressure in the tank gradually decreased. A total of about 139 gr hydrogen is released through a 4 mm diameter. The temperature time series and the temperature decay rate of the minimum value predicted by the different codes are compared with each other and with the experimentally measured ones. Recommendations for future experimental setup and for modeling approaches for similar releases are provided based on the present analysis. The work is carried out within the EU-funded project PRESLHY.
Hydrogen Safety Prediction and Analysis of Hydrogen Refueling Station Leakage Accidents and Process Using Multi-Relevance Machine Learning

Hydrogen energy vehicles are being increasingly widely used. To ensure the safety of hydrogenation stations research into the detection of hydrogen leaks is required. Offline analysis using data machine learning is achieved using Spark SQL and Spark MLlib technology. In this study to determine the safety status of a hydrogen refueling station we used multiple algorithm models to perform calculation and analysis: a multi-source data association prediction algorithm a random gradient descent algorithm a deep neural network optimization algorithm and other algorithm models. We successfully analyzed the data including the potential relationships internal relationships and operation laws between the data to detect the safety statuses of hydrogen refueling stations.
Some Fundamental Combustion Properties of "Cryogenic" Premixed Hydrogen Air Flames

Because of the emergence of the U.E. “green deal” and because of the significant implication of national and regional authorities throughout Europe the “hydrogen” economy is emerging. And with it numerous questions and experimentations. One of them perhaps a key point is the storage and transport of hydrogen. Liquid hydrogen in cryogenic conditions is a possibility already used in the space industry but under a lot of constrains. What may be acceptable in a well-controlled and restrained domain may not be realistic in a wider application closer to the public. Safety should be ensured and there is a need for a better knowledge of the flammable and ignition properties of the “cold” hydrogen mixtures following a cryogenic spillage for instance to select adequate ATEX equipment. The purpose of PRESLHY project [4] is to investigate the ignition fire and explosion characteristics of cryogenic hydrogen spillages and to propose safety engineering methods. The present work is part of it and addresses the measurement of the laminar burning velocity (Sl) flammability limits (FL) minimum ignition energy (MIE)… of hydrogen air mixtures at atmospheric pressure but down to -150°C. To do this a special burner was designed with details given inside this paper together with the experimental results. It is found that the FL domain is reduced when the temperature drops that MIE increases slightly and Sl decreases.
Flame Characteristics of Ignited under-expanded Cryogenic Hydrogen Jets

The anticipated upscaling of hydrogen energy applications will involve the storage and transport of hydrogen in a cryogenic state. Understanding the potential hazard arising from small leaks in pressurized storage and transport systems is needed to assist safety analysis and development of mitigation measures. The current knowledge of the ignited pressurized cryogenic hydrogen jet flame is limited. Large eddy simulation (LES) with detailed hydrogen chemistry is applied for the reacting flow. The effects of ignition locations are considered and the initial development of the transient flame kernel from the ignition hot spots is analysed. The flame structures namely side flames and envelop flames are observed in the study which are due to the complex interactions between turbulence fuel-air mixing at cryogenic temperature and chemical reactions.
Study of the Effects of Changes in Gas Composition as Well as Ambient and Gas Temperature on Errors of Indications of Thermal Gas Meters

Thermal gas meters represent a promising technology for billing customers for gaseous fuels however it is essential to ensure that measurement accuracy is maintained in the long term and in a broad range of operating conditions. The effect of hydrogen addition to natural gas will change the physicochemical properties of the mixture of natural gas and hydrogen. Such a mixture will be supplied through the gas system to consumers including households where the amounts of received gas will be metered. The physicochemical properties of hydrogen including the specific density or viscosity differ significantly from those of the natural gas components such as methane ethane propane nitrogen etc. Therefore it is of utmost importance to establish the impact of the changes in the gas composition caused by the addition of hydrogen to natural gas on the metrological properties of household gas meters including thermal gas meters. Furthermore since household gas meters can be installed outdoors and taking into account the fact that household gas meters are good heat exchangers the influence of ambient and gas temperature on the metrological properties of those meters should be investigated. This article reviews a test bench and a testing method concerning errors of thermal gas meter indicators using air and natural gas including the type containing hydrogen. The indication errors for thermal gas meters using air natural gas and natural gas with an addition of 2% 4% 5% 10% and 15% hydrogen were determined and then subjected to metrological analysis. Moreover the test method and test bench are discussed and the results of tests on the impact of ambient and gas temperatures (-25 ◦C and 55 ◦C respectively) on the errors of indications of thermal gas meters are presented. Conclusions for distribution system operators in terms of gas meter selection were drawn based on the test results.

The aim of this project was to review the current purge standards for UK domestic installations in particular IGEM/UP/1B and carry out experiments to assess the validity of those standards for use in hydrogen in order to understand and recommend safe purge practices for hydrogen in a domestic environment.
This report provides the results and conclusions relating to the relative safety of purging domestic installations to hydrogen compared to Natural Gas and the implications of releasing any purged gas
into an enclosed volume representing a small room.

Establishing the State of the Art for the Definition of Safety Distances for Hydrogen Refuelling Stations

Hydrogen is widely considered a clean source of energy from the viewpoint of reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as a countermeasure against global warming and air pollution. Various efforts have been made to develop hydrogen as a viable energy carrier including the implementation of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). A good network of hydrogen refuelling stations is essential for operating FCVs and several hydrogen refuelling stations have been constructed and are in operation worldwide [1]. However despite the potential benefits of hydrogen its flammability creates significant safety concerns. Furthermore even though the energy density of hydrogen is lower than that of gasoline and there is no carbon present which means the amount of radiant heat flux released during combustion is relatively small hydrogen must be handled at high pressure in order to make the cruising range of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) equal to that of gasoline-powered vehicles. Therefore it is essential to properly evaluate these safety concerns and take reasonable and effective countermeasures. Approximately 50 accidents and incidents involving HRSs have been reported globally [2]. Sakamoto et al. [2] analysed accidents and incidents at HRSs in Japan and the USA to identify the safety issues. Most types of accidents and incidents are small leakages of hydrogen but some have led to serious consequences such as fire and explosion. Recently there was a serious incident in Norway at Kjørbo where a strong explosion was observed [3] – indeed this was within a short time of two other serious incidents in the USA and South Korea showing that the frequency of such incidents may be higher as deployments increase. Use of hydrogen forklifts (and the associated refuelling infrastructure) is another challenge to consider. Hydrogen refuelling stations are often installed in urban areas facing roads and are readily accessible to everyone. Therefore a key measure to approve the hydrogen refuelling stations is safety distances between the hydrogen infrastructure and the surrounding structures such as office buildings or residential dwellings. Whilst a lot of work has been carried out on safety distances (see e.g. [4-6) the accident scenario assumptions and safety distances varied widely in those studies. As a result no consensus has yet emerged on the safety distances to be used and efforts are still needed to bridge the gap between international standards and local regulations (see e.g. [7-8]). The paper analyses this issue and provides guidance on the way forward.
Experimental Investigation on the Burning Behavior of Homogenous H2-CO-Air Mixtures in an Obstructed Semi-confined Channel

In the current work the combustion behavior of hydrogen-carbon monoxide-air mixtures in semiconfined geometries is investigated in a large horizontal channel facility (dimensions 9 m x 3 m x 0.6 m (L x W x H)) as a part of a joint German nuclear safety project. In the channel with evenly distributed obstacles (blockage ratio 50%) and an open to air ground face homogeneous H2-CO-air mixtures are ignited at one end. The combustion behavior of the mixture is analyzed using the signals of pressure sensors modified thermocouples and ionization probes for flame front detection that are distributed along the channel ceiling. In the experiments various fuel concentrations (cH2 + cCO = 14 to 22 Vol%) with different H2:CO ratios (75:25 50:50 and 25:75) are used and the transition regions for a significant flame acceleration to sonic speed (FA) as well as to a detonation (DDT) are investigated. The conditions for the onset of these transitions are compared with earlier experiments performed in the same facility with H2-air mixtures. The results of this work will help to allow a more realistic estimation of the pressure loads generated by the combustion of H2-CO-air mixtures in obstructed semi-confined geometries.
Hazards Assessment and Technical Actions Due to the Production of Pressured Hydrogen within a Pilot Photovoltaic-electrolyser-fuel Cell Power System for Agricultural Equipment

A pilot power system formed by photovoltaic panels alkaline electrolyser and fuel cell stacks was designed and set up to supply the heating system of an experimental greenhouse. The aim of this paper is to analyse the main safety aspects of this power system connected to the management of the pressured hydrogen such as the explosion limits of the mixture hydrogen-oxygen the extension of the danger zone the protection pressure vessels and the system to make unreactive the plant. The electrolyser unit is the core of this plant and from the safety point of view has been equipped with devices able to highlight the mal-functions before they cause damages. Alarm situations are highlighted and the production process is cut off in safe conditions in the event that the operational parameters have an abnormal deviation from the design values. Also the entire power system has been designed so that any failure to its components does not compromise the workers’ safety even if the risk analysis is in progress because technical operation are being carried out for enhancing the plant functionality making it more suitable to the designed task of supplying electrically the green-house heating system during cold periods. Some experimental data pertinent to the solar radiation and the corresponding hydrogen pro-duction rate are also reported. At present it does not exist a well-established safety reference protocol to design the reliability of these types of power plants and then the assumed safety measures even if related to the achieved pilot installation can represent an original base of reference to set up guidelines for designing the safety of power plants in the future available for agricultural purposes.
Safety and Other Considerations in the Development of a Hydrogen Fueling Protocol for Heavy-duty Vehicles

Several manufacturers are developing heavy duty (HD) hydrogen stations and vehicles as zeroemissions alternatives to diesel and gasoline. In order to meet customer demands the new technology must be comparable to conventional approaches including safety reliability fueling times and final fill levels. For a large HD vehicle with a storage rated to 70 MPa nominal working pressure the goal to meet liquid fuel parity means providing 100 kg of hydrogen in 10 minutes. This paper summarizes the results to date of the PRHYDE project efforts to define the concepts of HD fueling which thereby lays the groundwork for the development of the safe and effective approach to filling these large vehicles. The project starts by evaluating the impact of several different assumptions such as the availability of static vehicle data (e.g. vehicle tank type and volume) and station data (e.g. expected station precooling capability) but also considers using real time dynamic data (e.g. vehicle tank gas temperature and pressure station gas temperature etc.) for optimisation to achieve safety and efficiency improvements. With this information the vehicle or station can develop multiple maps of fill time versus the hydrogen delivery temperature which are used to determine the speed of fueling. This will also allow the station or vehicle to adjust the rate of fueling as the station pre-cooling levels and other conditions change. The project also examines different steps for future protocol development such as communication of data between the vehicle and station and if the vehicle or station is controlling the fueling.
Hydrogen Blowdown Release Experiments at Different Temperatures in the Discha-facility

In this work experiments on horizontal hydrogen jet releases from a 2.815 dm³ volume tank to the ambience are described. For the main experimental series tank valve and release line were cooled down to a temperature of approx. 80 K in a bath of liquid nitrogen. As a reference similar experiments were also performed with the uncooled tank at ambient temperature. The releases were carried out through four nozzles with different circular orifice diameters from 0.5 to 4 mm and started from initial tank pressures from 0.5 to 20 MPa (rel.). During the releases pressures and temperatures inside the vessel as well as inside the release line were measured. Outside the nozzle further temperature and hydrogen concentration measurements were performed along and besides the jet axis. The electrostatic field builtup in the jet was monitored using two field meters in different distances from the release nozzle and optical observation via photo and video-cameras was performed for the visualization of the H2-jet via the BOS-method. The experiments were performed in the frame of the EU-funded project PRESHLY in which several tests of this program were selected for a comparative computational study the results of which will also be presented at this conference. So on the one hand the paper gives a comprehensive description of the facility on the other hands it also describes the experimental procedure and the main findings.
