Green Energy Revolution and Substitution of Hydrocarbons with Hydrogen: Distribution Network Infrastructure Materials

Global warming is an accepted fact of life on Earth posing grave consequences in the form of weather patterns with life-threatening outcomes for inhabitants and their cultures especially those of island countries. These wild and unpredictable weather patterns have persuaded authorities governments and industrial leaders to adapt a range of solutions to combat the temperature rise on Earth. One such solution is to abandon fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) for energy generation and employ renewable energy sources or at least use energy sources that do not generate greenhouse gases. One such energy carrier is hydrogen which is expected to slowly replace natural gas and will soon be pumped into the energy distribution pipeline network. Since the current energy distribution network was designed for hydrocarbons its use for hydrogen may pose some threat to the safety of urban society. This is the first time an overview article has examined the replacement of hydrocarbons by hydrogen from a totally different angle by incorporating material science viewpoints. This article discusses hydrogen properties and warns about the issue of hydrogen embrittlement in the current pipeline network if hydrogen is to be pumped through the current energy distribution network i.e. pipelines. It is recommended that sufficient study and research be planned and carried out to ensure the safety of using the current energy distribution network for hydrogen distribution and to set the necessary standards and procedures for future design and construction.
Research Progress on Corrosion and Hydrogen Embrittlement in Hydrogen-Natural Gas Pipeline Transportation

Hydrogen clean efficient and zero-carbon is seen as a most promising energy source. The use of existing gas pipelines for hydrogenenatural gas transportation is considered to be an effective way to achieve long-distance large-scale efficient and economical hydrogen transportation. However the pipelines for hydrogenenatural gas transportation contain lots of impurities (e.g. CH4 high-pressure H2 H2S and CO2) and free water which will inevitably lead to corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement. This paper presents a systematic review of research and an outlook for corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement in hydrogenenatural gas pipeline transportation. The results show that gasphase hydrogen charging is suitable for hydrogenenatural gas transportation but this technique lacks technical standards. By contrast the liquid-phase hydrogen charging technique is more mature but has large deviation from the engineering reality. In the hydrogenenatural gas transportation pipelines corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement are synergetic and competitive but the failure mechanism and change law when corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement coexist remain unclear which need to be further clarified by experiments. The failure mechanism is believed to be mainly sensitive to three key factors i.e. the H2S/CO2 partial pressure ratio the hydrogen blending ratio and material strength. The increase of the three factors will make the pipeline materials more corrosive and more sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement. The research findings can be used as a reference for research and development of long-distance hydrogenenatural gas transportation technology and will drive the high-quality development of the hydrogenenatural gas blending industry.
Hydrogen UK Supply Chain Strategic Assessment

Hydrogen offers the UK a unique opportunity to deliver on our Net Zero ambitions enabling deep decarbonisation of the parts of the energy system that are challenging to electrify balancing the energy system by providing large scale long duration energy storage and reducing pressure on electricity infrastructure. The UK Government in recognition of the centrality of hydrogen to the future energy system has set a 10GW hydrogen production ambition to be achieved by 2030. This ambition and its supporting policies such as the Hydrogen Business Model the Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard and the Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Models will unlock private sector investment and kick-start the UK’s hydrogen activity. Encouragingly the UK has a positive track record of deploying low carbon technologies. The combination of the UK’s world leading policies and incentive schemes alongside a vibrant Research Development and Innovation (RD&I) and engineering environment has enabled rapid deployment of technologies such as offshore wind and electric vehicles. Yet despite being world leaders in deployment early opportunities for regional supply chain growth and job creation were not fully realised and taken advantage of from inception. The hydrogen sector is therefore at a tipping point. To capitalise on the economic opportunity hydrogen offers the UK must learn from prior technology deployments and build a strong domestic hydrogen supply chain in parallel to championing deployment.

It represents a significant economic opportunity with future hydrogen markets estimated by the Hydrogen Innovation Initiative to be worth $8tn and hydrogen technology markets estimated to reach $1tn by 20501 but crucially it is also still a nascent market. Unlike many other low carbon technologies where supply chains are already well established hydrogen supply chains are embryonic meaning that the UK has an opportunity to anchor these supply chains here and establish itself as a global leader.
The UK is well placed to capitalise on this opportunity with favourable geography and geology that enables us to produce and store hydrogen cost effectively coupled with a strong pipeline of hydrogen projects a stable policy environment that is attractive to investors and a wealth of transferable skills and expertise from the oil and gas industry.
We must ensure that alongside our focus on deployment we are also investing in technology and supply chains. Not only will this deliver exponential economic benefits from the projects supported by Government but it will also enable us to tackle increasing global supply chain constraints. Hydrogen UK estimated in its Economic Impact Assessment that hydrogen could deliver 30000 jobs annually and £7bn of GVA by 2030
It is important to be targeted and strategic in our investment and activities and recognise that hydrogen represents a wide range of technologies and the UK should not expect to lead in every area. Hydrogen UK with the support of the Hydrogen Delivery Council has undertaken analysis of the hydrogen value chain building on UK strengths and identifying the high value items that can deliver significant impact and benefit to the UK. We have also conducted widespread engagement with project developers to identify the barriers to utilising UK technology in projects and with technology developers to identify the challenges and barriers to investing and siting development and manufacturing in the UK.

Hydrogen Risk Assessment Studies: A Review Toward Environmental Sustainability

The transition to hydrogen as a clean energy source is critical for addressing climate change and supporting environmental sustainability. This review provides an accessible summary of general research trends in hydrogen risk assessment methodologies enabling diverse stakeholders including researchers policymakers and industry professionals to gain insights into this field. By examining representative studies across theoretical experimental and simulation-based approaches the review highlights prominent trends and applications within academia and industry. The key focus is on evaluating risks in stationary and transportation applications paying particular attention to hydrogen storage systems transportation infrastructures and energy systems. By offering a concise yet informative summary of hydrogen risk assessment trends this paper aims to serve as a foundational resource for fostering safer and more sustainable hydrogen systems.
Gas Crossover Predictive Modelling Using Artificial Neural Networks Based on Original Dataset Through Aspen Custom Modeler for Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyte System

Proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cell (PEMEC) will play a central role in future power-to-H2 plants. Current research focuses on the materials and operation parameters. Setting up experiments to explore operational accident scenarios about safety feasibility is not always practical. This paper focuses on building mathematical and prediction models of hydrogen and oxygen mixing scenarios of PEMEC. A mathematical model of the PEMEC device was customized in the Aspen Custom Model (ACM) software and integrated various critical Physico-chemical phenomena as the original data set for the prediction model. The results of the mathematical simulation verified the experimental results. The prediction model proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) framework to predict component distribution in the gas stream to prevent hydrogen-oxygen explosion scenarios. The presented approach by training ANN to 1000 sets of hydrogen-oxygen mixing simulation data from ACM is applicable to bypass tedious and non-smooth systems of equations for PEMEC.
Hazard Identification of Hydrogen-Based Alternative Fuels Onboard Ships

It is essential to use alternative fuels if we are to reach the emission reduction targets set by the IMO. Hydrogen carriers are classified as zero-emission while having a higher energy density (including packing factor) than pure hydrogen. They are often considered as safe alternative fuels. The exact definition of what safety entails is often lacking both for hydrogen carriers as well as for ship safety. The aim of this study is to review the safety of hydrogen carriers from two perspectives investigating potential connections between the chemical and maritime approaches to safety. This enables a reasoned consideration between safety aspects and other design drivers in ship design and operation. The hydrogen carriers AB NaBH4 KBH4 and two LOHCs (NEC and DBT) are taken into consideration together with a couple reference fuels (ammonia methanol and MDO). After the evaluation of chemical properties related to safety and the scope of the current IMO safety framework it can be concluded that safety remains a vague and non-explicit concept from both perspectives. Therefore further research is required to prove the safe application of hydrogen carriers onboard ships.
Numerical Simulation and Field Experimental Study of Combustion Characteristics of Hydrogen-Enriched Natural Gas

For the safe and efficient utilization of hydrogen-enriched natural gas combustion in industrial gas-fired boilers the present study adopted a combination of numerical simulation and field tests to investigate its adaptability. Firstly the combustion characteristics of hydrogen-enriched natural gas with different hydrogen blending ratios and equivalence ratios were evaluated by using the Chemkin Pro platform. Secondly a field experimental study was carried out based on the WNS2- 1.25-Q gas-fired boiler to investigate the boiler’s thermal efficiency heat loss and pollutant emissions after hydrogen addition. The results show that at the same equivalence ratio with the hydrogen blending ratio increasing from 0% to 25% the laminar flame propagation speed of the fuel increases the extinction strain rate rises and the combustion limit expands. The laminar flame propagation speed of premixed methane/air gas reaches the maximum value when the equivalence ratio is 1.0 and the combustion intensity of the flame is the highest at this time. In the field tests as the hydrogen blending ratio increases from 0% to nearly 10% with the increasing excess air ratio the boiler’s thermal efficiency decreases as well as the NOx emission. This indicates that there exists a tradeoff between the boiler thermal efficiency and NOx emission in practice.
Liquid Hydrogen Pool Evaporation Above Four Different Substrates

In the frame of the EC-funded project PRESLHY ten experiments on LH2-pool evaporation above four different substrates have been performed with the POOL-facility on a free field test site. Substrates to be investigated comprised concrete sand water and gravel. Four of the experiments were made with artificial side wind of known direction and known velocity to investigate the influence of side wind on hydrogen evaporation and cloud formation above the LH2-pool. The POOL-facility mainly consists of an insulated stainless-steel box with the dimensions 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.2 m³ that is filled up to half the height (0.1 m) with the respective substrate and LH2. The height of the LH2-pool that forms above the substrate can be determined using the weight of the complete facility which is positioned on a scale. Additionally six thermocouples are located in different heights above the substrate surface to indicate the LH2-level as soon as they are covered with LH2. Further measurement equipment used in the tests comprises temperature measurements inside the substrate and several thermocouples in the unconfined space above the pool where also H2-concentration measurements were performed. Using the sensor information pool evaporation rates for the different substrates were determined. The temperature and concentration measurements above the pool were mainly used to define promising ignition positions for subsequent combustion experiments in which the LH2-spills above the different substrates were ignited.
Numerical Investigations of Hydrogen Release and Dispersion Due to Silane Decomposition in a Ventilated Container

In recent years new chemical release agents based on silane are being used in the tire industry. Silane is an inorganic chemical compound consisting of a silicon backbone and hydrogen. Silanes can be thermally decomposed into high-purity silicon and hydrogen. If silane is stored and transported in Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) equipped with safety valves in vented semi-confined spaces such as ISO-Containers hydrogen can be accumulated and become explosive mixture with air. A conservative CFD analysis using the GASFLOW-MPI code has been carried out to assess the hydrogen risk inside the vented containers. Two types of containers with different natural ventilation systems were investigated under various hypothetical accident scenarios. A continuous release of hydrogen due to the chemical decomposition of silane from IBCs was studied as the reference case. The effect of the safety valves on hydrogen accumulation in the container which results in small pulsed releases of hydrogen was investigated. The external effects of the sun and wind on hydrogen distribution and ventilation were also evaluated. The results can provide detailed information on hydrogen dispersion and mixing within the vented enclosures and used to evaluate the hydrogen risks such as flammability. Based on the assumptions used in this study it indicates that the geometry of ventilation openings plays a key role in the efficiency of the indoor air exchange process. In addition the use of safety valves makes it possible to reduce the concentration of hydrogen by volume in air compared to the reference case. The effect of the sun which results in a temperature difference between two container walls allows a strong mixing of hydrogen and air which helps to obtain a concentration lower than both the base case and the case of the pulsed releases. But the best results for the venting process are obtained with the wind that can drive the mixture to the downwind wall vent holes.
A Multi-Zone Model for Hydrogen Accumulation and Ventilation in Enclosures

Due to the small characteristic molecular size of hydrogen small leaks are more common in hydrogen systems compared to similar systems with hydrocarbons. This together with the high reactivity makes an efficient ventilation system very important in hydrogen applications. There are several models available for ventilation sizing that are based on either a well-mixed assumption or a fully stratified situation. However experiments show that many realistic releases will be neither and therefore additional models are needed. One possibility is to use CFD-models but the small release sizes for pinhole releases (<<1 mm) make it difficult to find an appropriate mesh without excessive computational time (especially since the simulations need to be iterated to find the optimum ventilation size). An alternative approach which is described and benchmarked in the current paper is to use a multi-zone model where the domain is divided into several large cells where the mass exchange is simplified compared to CFD and thus simulation time is reduced. The flow in the model is governed by mass conservation and density differences due to concentration gradients using the Bernoulli equation. The release of gas generates a plume which is modelled based on an empirical plume model which gives the entrainment and hydrogen source term for each cell. The model has a short run time and will therefore allow optimization in a short time frame. The model is benchmarked against five experiments with helium at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in Canada and one hydrogen experiment performed at Lodz University of Technology in Poland. The result shows that the model can reasonably well reproduce accumulation in the experiments with small release without ventilation but appears to slightly underestimate the level of stratification and the interface height for ventilated cases where the source is elevated from the floor level.
The NREL Sensor Laboratory: Hydrogen Leak Detection for Large Scale Deployments

The NREL Hydrogen Sensor Laboratory was commissioned in 2010 as a resource for sensor developers end-users and regulatory agencies within the national and international hydrogen community. The Laboratory continues to provide as its core capability the unbiased verification of hydrogen sensor performance to assure sensor availability and their proper use. However the mission and strategy of the NREL Sensor Laboratory has evolved to meet the needs of the growing hydrogen market. The Sensor Laboratory program has expanded to support research in conventional and alternative detection methods as hydrogen use expands to large-scale markets as envisioned by the DOE National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap. Current research encompasses advanced methods of hydrogen leak detection including stand-off and wide area monitoring approaches for large scale and distributed applications. In addition to safety applications low-level detection strategies to support the potential environmental impacts of hydrogen and hydrogen product losses along the value chain are being explored. Many of these applications utilize detection strategies that supplement and may supplant the use of traditional point sensors. The latest results of the hydrogen detection strategy research at NREL will be presented.
Safety of Cryogenic Liquid Hydrogen Bunkering Operations - The Gaps Between Existing Knowhow and Industry Needs

Hydrogen plays an important role in the global transition towards Net-Zero emission. While pipelines are a viable option to transport large quantities of compressed hydrogen over long distances it is not always practical in many applications. In such situations a viable option is to transport and deliver large quantities of hydrogen as cryogenic liquid. The liquefaction process cools hydrogen to cryogenic temperatures below its boiling point of -259.2 0C. Such extreme low temperature implies specific hazards and risks which are different from those associated with the relatively well-known compressed gaseous hydrogen. Managing these specific issues brings new challenges for the stakeholders.<br/>Furthermore the transfer of liquid hydrogen (LH2) and its technical handling is relatively well known for industrial gas or space applications. Experience with LH2 in public and populated areas such as truck and aircraft refuelling stations or port bunkering stations for example is limited or non-existent. Safety requirements in these applications which involve or are in proximity of untrained public are different from rocket/aerospace industry.<br/>The manuscript reviews knowhow already gained by the international hydrogen safety community; and on such basis elucidate the gaps which are yet to be filled to meet industry needs to design and operate inherently safe LH2 operations including the implications for regulations codes and standards (RCS). Where relevant the associated gaps in some underpinning sciences will be mentioned; and the need to contextualise the information and safety practices from NASA1/ESA2/JAXA3 to inform risk adoption will be summarised.
Gas Leak Detection Using Acoustics and Artificial Intelligence

Gas leak detection on a production site is a major challenge for the safety and health of workers for environmental considerations and from an economic point of view. In addition flammable gas leaks are a safety risk because if ignited they can cause serious fires or explosions. For these reasons Acoem Metravib in collaboration with TotalEnergies One Tech R&D Safety has developed for the past four years a system called AGLED for the early detection localization and classification of such leaks exploiting acoustics and artificial intelligence driven by physics. Numerous tests have been conducted on a theater representative of gas production facilities created by TotalEnergies in Lacq (France) to build a robust learning database of leaks varying in flowrates exhaust diameters and also types (hole nozzle flange...). Moreover to limit the number of false alarms a relearning strategy has been implemented to handle unexpected disturbances (wildlife human activities meteorological events...). The presented paper describes the global architecture of the system from noise acquisition to the gas leak probability and coordinates. It gives a more in-depth look at the relearning algorithm and its performance in various environments. Finally thanks to a complementary collaboration with Air Liquide an example of test campaign in a real industrial environment is presented with an emphasis on the improvement obtained through relearning.
Experimental Study on the Ignition of Hydrogen Containing Atmospheres by Mechanical Impacts

In international regulations on explosion protection mechanical friction impact or abrasion is usually named as one of 13 ignition sources that must be avoided in hazardous zones with explosive atmospheres. In different studies it is even identified as one of the most frequent ignition sources in practice. The effectiveness of mechanical impacts as ignition source is dependent from several parameters including the minimum ignition energy of the explosive atmosphere the properties of the material pairing the kinetic impact energy or the impact velocity. By now there is no standard procedure to determine the effectiveness of mechanical impacts as ignition source. In some previous works test procedures with poor reproducibility or undefined kinetic impact energy were applied for this purpose. In other works only homogeneous material pairings were considered. In this work the effectiveness of mechanical impacts with defined and reproducible kinetic impact energy as ignition source for hydrogen containing atmospheres was studied systematically in dependence from the inhomogeneous material pairing considering materials with practical relevance like stainless steel low alloy steel concrete and non-iron-metals. It was found that ignition can be avoided if non-iron metals are used in combination with different metallic materials but in combination with concrete even the impact of non-iron-metals can be an effective ignition source if the kinetic impact energy is not further limited. Moreover the consequence of hydrogen admixture to natural gas on the effectiveness of mechanical impacts as ignition source was studied. In many cases ignition of atmospheres containing natural gas by mechanical impacts is rather unlikely. No influence could be observed for admixtures up to 25% hydrogen and even more. The results are mainly relevant in the context of repurposing the natural gas grid or adding hydrogen to the natural gas grid. Based on the test results it can be evaluated under which circumstances the use of tools made of non-iron-metals or other non-sparking materials can be an effective measure to avoid ignition sources in hazardous zones containing hydrogen for example during maintenance work.
GT Enclosure Dispersion Analysis with Different CFD Tools

A gas turbine is usually installed inside an acoustic enclosure where the fuel gas supply system is also placed. It is common practice using CFD analysis to simulate the accidental fuel gas release inside the enclosure and the consequent dispersion. These numerical studies are used to properly design the gas detection system according to specific safety criteria which are well defined when the fuel gas is a conventional natural gas. Package design is done to prevent that any sparking items and hot surfaces higher than auto-ignition temperature could be a source of ignition in case of leak. Nevertheless it is not possible to exclude that a leakage from a theoretical point of view could be ignited and for this reason a robust design requires that the enclosure structure is able to withstand the overpressure generated by a gas cloud ignition. Moving to hydrogen as fuel gas makes this design constraint much more relevant for its known characteristics of reactiveness large range of flammability maximum burning velocity etc. In such context gas leak and dispersion analysis become even more crucial because a correct prediction of these scenarios can guide the design to a safe configuration. The present work shows a comparison of the dispersion of different leakages inside a gas turbine enclosure carried out with two different CFD tools Ansys CFX and FLACS. This verification is considered essential since dispersion analysis results are used as initial conditions for gas cloud ignition simulations strictly necessary to predict the consequence in term of overpressure without doing experimental tests.
Hydrogen Leakage Location Prediction in a Fuel Cell System of Skid-Mounted Hydrogen Refueling Stations

Hydrogen safety is a critical issue during the construction and development of the hydrogen energy industry. Hydrogen refueling stations play a pivotal role in the hydrogen energy chain. In the event of an accidental hydrogen leak at a hydrogen refueling station the ability to quickly predict the leakage location is crucial for taking immediate and effective measures to prevent disastrous consequences. Therefore the development of precise and efficient technologies to predict leakage locations is vital for the safe and stable operation of hydrogen refueling stations. This paper studied the localization technology of high-risk leakage locations in the fuel cell system of a skid-mounted hydrogen refueling station. The hydrogen leakage and diffusion processes in the fuel cell system were predicted using CFD simulations and the hydrogen concentration data at various monitoring points were obtained. Then a multilayer feedforward neural network was developed to predict leakage locations using simulated concentration data as training samples. After multiple adjustments to the network structure and hyperparameters a final model with two hidden layers was selected. Each hidden layer consisted of 10 neurons. The hyperparameters included a learning rate of 0.0001 a batch size of 32 and 10-fold cross-validation. The Softmax classifier and Adam optimizer were used with a training set for 1500 epochs. The results show that the algorithm can predict leakage locations not included in the training set. The accuracy achieved by the model was 95%. This approach addresses the limitations of sensor detection in accurately locating leaks and mitigates the risks associated with manual inspections. This paper provides a feasible method for locating hydrogen leakage in hydrogen energy application scenarios.
Eye-readable Sensors for Intuitive Hydrogen Monitoring

Hydrogen energy is a cornerstone of the future climate-neutral economy. Yet as undetected leaks easily generate dangerous atmospheres sensing systems must timely detect accumulated hydrogen to prevent ignitions and explosions. Eye-readable sensors (ERSs) displaying intuitive readouts promise to guarantee safe use and universal access to hydrogen-based technology. This review highlights the impact of reversible ERSs in hydrogen moni toring to contextualize their current and potential applicability. First sensing mechanisms for gasochromic tungsten oxide films and switchable metal hydrides are critically overviewed. Then pivotal strategies targeting real-time monitorization indoors and permanent leak recording outdoors are presented along with standard hydrogen leakage scenarios elucidating opportunities for ERSs. Finally important challenges and desirable userfriendly concepts are discussed with the purpose of narrowing the gap between this class of sensors and the forthcoming hydrogen society.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations of Hydrogen Releases and Vented Deflagrations in Large Enclosures

This paper presents model predictions obtained with the CFD tool FLACS for hydrogen releases and vented deflagrations in containers and larger enclosures. The paper consists of two parts. The first part compares experimental results and model predictions for two test cases: experiments performed by Gexcon in 20-foot ISO containers (volume 33 m3 ) as part of the HySEA project and experiments conducted by SRI International and Sandia National Laboratories in a scaled warehouse geometry (volume 45.4 m3 ). The second part explores the use of the model system validated in the first part to accidental releases of hydrogen from forklift trucks inside a full-scale warehouse geometry (32 400 m3 ). The results demonstrate the importance of using realistic and reasonably accurate geometry models of the systems under consideration when performing CFD-based risk assessment studies. The discussion highlights the significant inherent uncertainty associated with quantitative risk assessments for vented hydrogen deflagrations in complex geometries. The suggestions for further work include a pragmatic approach for developing empirical correlations for pressure loads from vented hydrogen deflagrations in industrial warehouses with hydrogen-powered forklift trucks.

CO2 Effect on the Fatigue Crack Growth of X80 Pipeline Steel in Hydrogen-Enriched Natural Gas: Experiment vs Density Functional Theory Calculation

The influence of hydrogen-enriched natural gas (HENG) and CO2 on the mechanical property of X80 pipeline steel were investigated via fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results show that the FCGR in H2 was slightly faster than that in HENG while it was slower than that in the N2/CO2/H2 mixtures. The enhanced FCGR by CO2 further increased with the increasing CO2 content. DFT calculation results show that the adsorbed CO2 on the iron surface significantly increased the migration rate of H atoms from surface to subsurface. This promotes the entry of hydrogen into the steel.
Risk Assessment of Explosion Accidents in Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Rooms Using Experimental Investigations and Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations

For the safe utilization and management of hydrogen energy within a fuel-cell room in a hydrogen-fueled house an explosion test was conducted to evaluate the potential hazards associated with hydrogen accident scenarios. The overpressure and heat radiation were measured for an explosion accident at distances of 1 2 3 5 and 10 m for hydrogen–air mixing ratios of 10% 25% 40% and 60%. When the hydrogen–air mixture ratio was 40% the greatest overpressure was 24.35 kPa at a distance of 1 m from the fuel-cell room. Additionally the thermal radiation was more than 1.5 kW/m2 which could cause burns at a distance of 5 m from the hydrogen fuel-cell room. Moreover a thermal radiation in excess of 1.5 kW/m2 was computed at a distance of 3 m from the hydrogen fuel-cell room when the hydrogen–air mixing ratio was 25% and 60%. Consequently an explosion in the hydrogen fuel-cell room did not considerably affect fatality levels but could affect the injury levels and temporary threshold shifts. Furthermore the degree of physical damage did not reach major structural damage levels causing only minor structural damage.
A Priority-based Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) Method for Risk Assessment of Hydrogen Applications Onboard Maritime Vessels

The maritime industry is gaining momentum towards a more decarbonized and sustainable path. However most of the worldwide fleet still relies on fossil fuels for power producing harmful environmental emissions. Hydrogen as a clean fuel is a promising alternative but its unique properties pose significant safety challenges. For instance hydrogen has a wide flammability range inherently increasing the risk of ignition. Moreover its comparatively low volumetric energy density necessitates faster filling rates and larger volumes for bunkering and onboard storage leading to higher risk rates. Therefore the use of hydrogen for maritime applications requires the development of specialized riskbased approaches according to safety engineering principles and techniques. The key safety implications are discussed and reviewed with focus on onboard hydrogen storage handling and refueling while a priority-based Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method for risk assessment is proposed based on the revised guidelines of Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). The revised AIAG-VDA FMEA method replaces the conventional Risk Priority Number (RPN) with a new Action Priority (AP) rating enabling the prioritization of recommended actions for risk reduction. The paper aims to a more profound understanding of the safety risks associated with hydrogen as a maritime fuel and to provide an effective risk assessment method for hydrogen applications onboard maritime vessels.
Hydrogen Behavior and Mitigation Measures: State of Knowledge and Database from Nuclear Community

Hydrogen has become a key enabler for decarbonization as countries pledge to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. With hydrogen infrastructure expanding rapidly beyond its established applications there is a requirement for robust safety practices solutions and regulations. Since the 1980s considerable efforts have been undertaken by the nuclear community to address hydrogen safety issues because in severe accidents of water-cooled nuclear reactors a large amount of hydrogen can be produced from the oxidation of metallic components with steam. As evidenced in the Fukushima accident hydrogen combustion can cause severe damage to reactor building structures promoting the release of radioactive fission products to the environment. A number of large-scale experiments were conducted in the framework of national and international projects to understand the hydrogen dispersion and combustion behaviour under postulated accidental conditions. Empirical engineering models and numerical codes were developed and validated for safety analysis. Hydrogen recombiners known as Passive Autocatalytic Recombiner (PAR) were developed and have been widely installed in nuclear containments to mitigate hydrogen risk. Complementary actions and strategies were established as part of severe accident management guidelines to prevent or limit the consequences of hydrogen explosions. In addition hydrogen monitoring systems were developed and implemented in nuclear power plants. The experience and knowledge gained from the nuclear community on hydrogen safety is valuable and applicable for other industries involving hydrogen production transport storage and use.
CFD Dispersion Simulations of Compressed Hydrogen Releases through TPRD Inside Scaled Tunnel

To achieve the net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050 the transition to cleaner forms and carriers of energy should be accelerated without though jeopardizing the public safety. Although hydrogen has been deemed to play significant role in the energy transition for years now there are still concerns for its risks that hamper its widespread implementation in several applications like for instance automobile applications. Hydrogen-powered vehicles raise concerns about their safety especially inside confined spaces like tunnels and thus research on that topic has been intensified during the last years. In this context experiments have been conducted by UK HSE within the EU-funded project HyTunnel-CS to examine hydrogen dispersion and deflagration inside a scaled tunnel resulting from fuel cell car bus and train release.<br/>In this work that was also carried out within the HyTunnel-CS we present the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of the HSE unignited experiments. Blowdown tests related to high-pressure hydrogen releases through Thermal Pressure Relief Device (TPRD) installed in car and in train were modeled using the ADREA-HF code. The scope of these simulations was two-fold: a) contribute to the design of the experiments (e.g. indicate sensor positioning ignition point etc.) and the interpretation of hydrogen behavior and b) validate the CFD code. For the former pre-test simulations preceded the experiments to provide design recommendations. When the experiments were conducted the measurements were used for the code validation. Overall the CFD results are in satisfactory agreement with the experiments. Finally simulations with different ventilation rates and with model vehicles inside the tunnel were conducted to examine their effect on mixture dispersion and tunnel safety.
Lessons Learned from Large Scale Hydrogen Production Project

In August 2022 Shell started construction of Holland Hydrogen I (HH I) a 200 MW electrolyser plant in the port of Rotterdam’s industrial zone on Maasvlakte II in the Netherlands. HH I will produce up to 60000 kg of renewable hydrogen per day. The development and demonstration of a safe layout and plant design had been challenging due to ambitious HH I project premises many technical novelties common uncertainties in hydrogen leak effect prediction a lack of large-scale water electrolyzer operating history and limited standardization in this industry sector. This paper provides an industry perspective of the major challenges in commercial electrolyzer plant HSSE risk assessment and risk mitigation work processes required to develop and demonstrate a safe design and it describes lessons learned in this area during the HH I project. Furthermore the paper lists major common gaps in relevant knowledge engineering tools standards and OEM deliverables that need closure to enable future commercial electrolyzer plant projects to develop an economically viable and plant design and layout more efficiently and cost-effectively.
Hydrogen Related Accidents and Lesson Learned from Events Reported in the East Continental Asia

Hydrogen as an energy carrier plays an important role in carbon neutrality and energy transition. Hydrogen is the lightest element with a density of only 0.08375 kg/m3 in gaseous form at standard temperature and pressure (STP); as a result hydrogen is usually stored and transported in a highly compressed form. It is prone to leakage and has a very low ignition energy of 0.017 mJ. Safety remains a challenge in the use of hydrogen as an energy source. This paper examines approximately 20 hydrogen-related accidents in China over a 20-year period focusing on the root causes consequences of the accidents and responses to them. These accidents occurred in the production storage transport and application of hydrogen with different causes in different locations and resulting in losses at different scales. Some statistical evaluations were conducted to learn lessons from the accidents. The main objective of this paper is (i) to retrieve a set of hydrogen related incidents from a region which is under-represented in incident repositories (ii) to contribute to a generalised lesson learned from them and (iii) to assist the definition of realistic scenarios for commonly occurring hydrogen accidents.
Dispersion, Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of Low-pressure Hydrogen-Methane Blends

In this paper we study the dispersion ignition and flame characteristics of blended jets of hydrogen and methane (as a proxy for natural gas) at near-atmospheric pressure for a fixed volumetric flow rate which mimics the scenario of a small-scale unintended leak. A reduction in flame height is observed with increasing hydrogen concentration. A laser is tightly focused to generate a spark with sufficient energy to ignite the fuel. The light-up boundary defined as the delineating location at which a spark ignites into a jet flame or extinguishes is determined as a contour. The light-up boundary increases in both width and length as the hydrogen content increases up to 75% hydrogen at which point the axial ignition boundary decreases slightly for pure hydrogen relative to 75% hydrogen. Ignition probability a key parameter regarding safety is computed at various axial locations and is also shown to be higher near the nozzle as well as non-zero at further downstream locations as the hydrogen content in the blend increases. Planar laser Raman scattering is used in separate experiments to determine the concentration of both fuel species. Mean fuel concentrations well below the lower flammability limit are both within the light-up boundary and have non-zero ignition probabilities.
AMHYCO Project - Advances in H2/CO Combustion, Recombination and Containment Modelling

During a severe accident in a nuclear power plant one of the potential threats to the containment is the occurrence of energetic combustion events. In modern plants Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMG) as well as dedicated mitigation hardware are in place to minimize/mitigate this combustion risk and thus avoid the release of radioactive material into the environment. Advancements in SAMGs are in the focus of AMHYCO an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project officially launched on October 1st 2020. The project consortium consists of 12 organizations (from six European countries and one from Canada) and is coordinated by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). The progress made in the first two years of the AMHYCO project is here presented. A comprehensive bibliographic review has been conducted providing a common foundation to build the knowledge gained during the project. After an extensive set of accident transients simulated both for phases occurring inside and outside the reactor pressure vessel a set of challenging sequences from the combustion risk perspective for different power plant types were identified. At the same time three generic containment models for the three considered reactor designs have been created to provide the full containment analysis simulations with lumped parameter models 3-dimensional containment codes and CFD codes. In order to further consolidate the model base combustion experiments and performance tests on passive auto-catalytic recombiners under explosion prone H2/CO atmospheres were performed at CNRS (France) and FZJ (Germany). Finally it is worth saying that the experimental data and engineering models generated from the AMHYCO project are useful for other industries outside the nuclear one.

HyResponder is a European Hydrogen Train the Trainer programme for responders. This paper describes the key outputs of the project and the steps taken to develop and implement a long-term sustainable train the trainer programme in hydrogen safety for responders across Europe and beyond. This FCH2 JU (now Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) funded project has built on the successful outcomes of the previous HyResponse project. HyResponder has developed further and updated educational operational and virtual reality training for trainers of responders to reflect the state-of-the-art in hydrogen safety including liquid hydrogen and expand the programme across Europe and specifically within the 10 countries represented directly within the project consortium: Austria Belgium the Czech Republic France Germany Italy Norway Spain Switzerland and the United Kingdom. For the first time four levels of educational materials from fire fighter through to specialist have been developed. The digital training resources are available on the e-Platform (https://hyresponder.eu/e-platform/). The revised European Emergency Response Guide is now available to all stakeholders. The resources are intended to be used to support national training programs. They are available in 8 languages: Czech Dutch English French German Italian Norwegian and Spanish. Through the HyResponder activities trainers from across Europe have undertaken joint actions which are in turn being used to inform the delivery of regional and national training both within and beyond the project. The established pan-European network of trainers is shaping the future in the important for inherently safer deployment of hydrogen systems and infrastructure across Europe and enhancing the reach and impact of the programme.
Risk Assessment of a Hydrogen Refueling Station in an Urban Area

After the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015 many countries worldwide focused on the hydrogen economy aiming for eco-friendly and renewable energy by moving away from the existing carbon economy which has been the primary source of global warming. Hydrogen is the most common element on Earth. As a light substance hydrogen can diffuse quickly; however it also has a small risk of explosion. Representative explosion accidents have included the Muskingum River Power Plant Vapor Cloud Explosion accident in 2007 and the Silver Eagle Refinery Vapor Cloud Explosion accident in 2009. In addition there was an explosion in a hydrogen tank in Gangneung Korea in May 2019 and a hydrogen refueling station (HRS) in Norway exploded in 2018. Despite this risk Korea is promoting the establishment of HRSs in major urban centers including downtown areas and public buildings by using the Regulatory Sandbox to install HRSs. This paper employed the Hydrogen Risk Assessment Model (HyRAM) of Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) program specialized in hydrogen energy for HRSs installed in major urban hubs. A feasibility evaluation of the site conditions of an HRS was conducted using the French land use planning method based on the results obtained through evaluation using the HyRAM and the overpressure results of PHAST 8.0. After a risk assessment we confirmed that an HRS would be considered safe even if it was installed in the city center within a radius of influence of jet fires and overpressure.
Hydrogen Jet Fires in a Full-scale Road Tunnel: Experimental Results

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (HFC EVs) represent an alternative to replace current internal combustion engine vehicles. The use of these vehicles with storage of compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) or cryogenic liquid hydrogen (LH2) in confined spaces such as tunnels underground car parks etc. creates new challenges to ensure the protection of people and property and to keep the risk at an acceptable level. Several studies have shown that confinement or congestion can lead to severe accidental consequences compared to accidents in an open atmosphere. It is therefore necessary to develop validated hazard and risk assessment tools for the behaviour of hydrogen in tunnels. The HYTUNNEL-CS project sponsored by the FCH-JU pursues this objective. Among the experiments carried out in support of the validation of the hydrogen safety tools the CEA conducted tests on large-scale jet fires in a full-scale tunnel geometry.<br/>The tests were performed in a decommissioned road tunnel in two campaigns. The first one with 50 liters type II tanks under a pressure of 20 MPa and the second one with 78 liters type IV tanks under 70 MPa. In both cases a flate plate was used to simulate the vehicle. Downward and upward gas discharges to simulate a rollover have been investigated with various release diameters. For the downward discharge the orientation varied from normal to the road to a 45° rearward inclination. The first campaign took place under a concrete vault while the second under a rocky vault. Additional tests with the presence of a propane fire simulating a hydrocarbon powered vehicle fire were performed to study the interaction between the two reactive zones.<br/>In the paper all the results obtained during the second campaign for the evolution of the hydrogen jet-fire size the radiated heat fluxes and the temperature of the hot gases released in the tunnel are reported. Comparisons with the classical correlations from open field tests used in engineering models are also presented and conclusions are given as to their applicability.
Modeling of Tube Deformation and Failure under Conditions of Hydrogen Detonation

In case of accidental conditions involving high-speed hydrogen combustion the considerable pressure and thermal loads could result in substantial deformation and/or destruction of the industrial appliances. Accounting of such effects in the safety analysis with CFD tools can provide critical information on the design and construction of the sensitive appliances’ elements. The current paper presents the development and the implementation of a new 3D-technique which makes possible to perform simulations of the gas-dynamic processes simultaneously with adaptation of the geometry of complex configurations. Using the data obtained in the experiments on the flame acceleration and DDT in the tubes of industrial arrangements performed in MPA and KIT the authors performed a series of the combustion simulations corresponding to the experimental conditions. The combustion gas-dynamics was simulated using COM3D code and the tube wall material behavior was modelled using finite-element code ABAQUS - © Dassault Systèmes with real-time data exchange between the codes. Obtained numerical results demonstrated good agreement with the observed experimental data on both pressure dynamics and tube deformation history.
The Effect of Ventilation on the Hazards of Hydrogen Release in Enclosed Areas of Hydrogen-fueled Ship

This paper presents a systematic investigation that encompasses the safety assessment of a fuel preparation room (FPR) intended for a hydrogen-fueled ship. The primary objective is to determine the appropriate ventilation strategy to mitigate the risks associated with potential hydrogen leakage. The study focuses on a case involving an FPR measuring 10.2 m × 5.3 m × 2.65 m which is part of a 750 DWT hydrogen-powered fishing vessel. To identify the potential events leading to hydrogen dispersion an event tree analysis is conducted. Additionally existing regulations and guidelines related to the safety assessments of hydrogen leakage in enclosed areas are summarized and analyzed. Computational fluid dynamics FLACS-CFD are utilized for the consequence analysis in order to evaluate the impact of ventilation on hydrogen dispersion and concentration within the FPR. The research findings indicate significant effects of ventilation on the hazards and safety assessments of FPRs and high-pressure fuel gas supply systems. The study highlights that hydrogen vapor tends to accumulate at the ceiling and in the corners and spaces created by the equipment. The position and size of ventilation openings greatly influence the dispersion of hydrogen leakage. Proper ventilation design including top inlet ventilation and outlet ventilation on the opposite side helps to maintain a safe FPR by facilitating the efficient dispersion of hydrogen vapor. Moreover locating inlet ventilation on the same side as the outlet ventilation is found to hinder dispersion while the cross-ventilation achieved by placing inlets and outlets on opposite sides enhances airflow and dispersion. Consequently it is recommended to prioritize the structural design of FPRs and implement enhanced safety measures. Additionally updating the relevant regulations to address these concerns is strongly advised.
Unconfined Hydrogen Detonations: Experiments, Modelling, Scaling

A series of unconfined hydrogen detonation bench-mark experiments are analyzed with respect to CFD code validation and safety measures development. 1-Dimensional in-house code COM1D was applied for validation against experimental data for unconfined detonation of a hemispherical envelope of about 3- and 5-m radius with hydrogen-air mixtures from 20 to 30% hydrogen in air. The code demonstrates a very good agreement with experimental data and allows an adequate simulation of the unconfined hydrogen detonation. All calculated data were scaled in Sachs coordinates to compare with experimental data and to approximate the data for practical evaluation of safety distances. Numerical experiments with different hydrogen inventories from 50 g to 50 kg and different sizes of the cloud from 1 to 2 m radius of the same amount of hydrogen 50g were carried out to clarify the problem of energy of gaseous explosion responsible for the strength of blast wave. Additionally a comparison of hydrogen-air explosion pressure with blast wave properties from the hypothetical cloud of hot compressed combustion products (P=Picc; T=Ticc) and simply a hot air of the same initial pressure and temperature as combustion products showed very good agreement of shock wave strength at far distances beyond the cloud. This confirms the governing role of energy of combustion on blast wave propagation and its ability to scale the strength of blast waves. The dynamics of the explosion process and combustion product expansion were also analyzed experimentally and numerically to evaluate the dimension of the heat radiation zone and heat flux from combustion products. To demonstrate the capability of tested COM1D code the modeling and analysis of high-pressure hydrogen tanks rupture at 350 and 700 bar were conducted to investigate blast wave strength and evaluate the safety distances.
A Model for Assessing the Potential Impact Radius of Hydrogen Pipelines Based on Jet Fire Radiation

The accurate determination of the potential impact radius is crucial for the design and risk assessment of hydrogen pipelines. The existing methodologies employ a single point source model to estimate radiation and the potential impact radius. However these approaches overlook the jet fire shape resulting from high-pressure leaks leading to discrepancies between the calculated values and real-world incidents. This study proposes models that account for both the mass release rate while considering the pressure drop during hydrogen pipeline leakage and the radiation while incorporating the flame shape. The analysis encompasses 60 cases that are representative of hydrogen pipeline scenarios. A simplified model for the potential impact radius is subsequently correlated and its validity is confirmed through comparison with actual cases. The proposed model for the potential impact radius of hydrogen pipelines serves as a valuable reference for the enhancement of the precision of hydrogen pipeline design and risk assessment.
Populating the Hydrogen Component Reliability Database (HYCRED) with Incident Data from Hydrogen Dispensing

Safety risk and reliability issues are vital to ensure the continuous and profitable operation of hydrogen technologies. Quantitative risk assessment (QRA) has been used to enable the safe deployment of engineering systems especially hydrogen fueling stations. However QRA studies require reliability data which are essential to collect to make the studies as realistic and relevant as possible. These data are currently lacking and data from other industries such as oil and gas are used in hydrogen system QRAs. This may lead to inaccurate results since hydrogen fueling stations have differences in physical properties system design and operational parameters when compared to other fueling stations thus necessitating new data sources are necessary to capture the effects of these differences. To address this gap we developed a structure for a hydrogen component reliability database (HyCReD) [1] which could be used to generate reliability data to be used in QRA studies. In this paper we demonstrate populating the HyCReD database with information extracted from new narrative reports on hydrogen fueling station incidents specifically focused on the dispensing processes. We analyze five new events and demonstrate the feasibility of populating the database and types of meaningful insights that can be obtained at this stage.
Deflagrations of Non-uniform Hydrogen/Air Clouds in a Tunnel

This paper presents work undertaken by the HSE as part of the Hytunnel-CS project a consortium investigating safety considerations for fuel cell hydrogen (FCH) vehicles in tunnels and similar confined spaces.<br/>Hydrogen vehicles typically have a Thermally activated Pressure Release Device (TPRD) providing protection to the on-board storage of the vehicle. Upon activation the content of the vessel is released in a blowdown. The release of this hydrogen gas poses a significant hazard of ignition. The consequences of such an ignition could also be compounded by confinement or congestion.<br/>HSE undertook a series of experiments investigating the consequences of these events by releasing hydrogen into a tunnel and causing ignitions. A sub-section of these tests involved steel structures providing congestion in the tunnel. The mass of hydrogen released into the tunnel prior to ignition was varied by storage pressure (up to 59 MPa) release diameter and ignition delay. The ignition delays were set based on the expected worst-case predicted by pre-simulation models. To assess the consequences overpressure measurements were made down the tunnel walls and for the tests with congestion at the face and rear of the congestion structures. The flame arrival time was also measured using exposed-tip thermocouples resulting in an estimate for flame speed down the tunnel. The measured overpressure and flame extent results are presented and compared against overpressure levels of concern.

A phase transition develops when a pressurised ammonia vessel is vented through a relieve valve or as a result of shell cracking. Significant pressure recovery in the vessel can occur as a consequence of this phase transition following initial depressurisation and may lead to complete vessel failure. It is critical for safety engineering to predict the flash boiling behaviour and pressure dynamics during the depressurization of liquid ammonia tank. This research aims to develop and compare against available experimental data a CFD model that can predict two-phase behaviour of ammonia and resulting pressure dynamics in the storage tank during its venting to the atmosphere. The CFD model is based on the Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and Lee evaporation/condensation approach. The numerical simulation demonstrated that liquid ammonia which is initially at equilibrium state begins to boil throughout due to the decrease of its saturation temperature with the pressure drop during tank venting. In order to understand phenomena underlying the pressure recovery this paper analyses dynamics of superheated ammonia formation its swelling vaporisation contribution to gaseous ammonia mass and volume in ullage space and gaseous ammonia venting. Performed in the study quantitative analysis demonstrated that the flash boiling and gaseous ammonia produced by this phase change were the major reasons behind the pressure recovery. The simulation results of flash boiling delay accurately matched the analytical calculation of bubble rise time. The developed CFD model can be used as a contemporary tool for inherently safer design of ammonia tanks and their depressurisation process.
Hydrogen Dispersion in a Full-scale Road Tunnel: Experimental Results and CFD Analysis

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (HFC EVs) represent an alternative to replace current internal combustion engine vehicles. The use of these vehicles with storage of compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) in confined spaces such as tunnels underground car parks etc. creates new challenges to ensure the protection of people and property and to keep the risk at an acceptable level. The HYTUNNEL-CS project sponsored by the FCH-JU was launched to develop validated hazard and risk assessment tools for the behavior of hydrogen leaks in tunnels. Among the experiments carried out in support of the validation tools the CEA has conducted tests on gas dispersion in a full-scale tunnel geometry. In the tests carried out hydrogen is replaced by helium under a pressure of 70 MPa in a 78 liter tank. The car is simulated by a flat plate called chassis and the discharges are made either downwards under the chassis or upwards to take into account a rollover of the car during the accident. Different thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) diameters are examined as well as different orientations of the discharge. Finally the mixing transient of helium with air is measured for distances between -50 and +50m from the release. Performing CFD simulations of such an under-expanded jet in an environment as large as a road tunnel demands a compressible flow solver and so a large computational cost. To optimize this cost a notional nozzle approach is generally used to replace the under-expanded jet by a subsonic jet that has the same concentration dilution behavior. The physics at the injection point is then not resolved and a model of these boundary conditions has to be implemented. This article first reviews the main experimental results. Then a model of boundary conditions is proposed to have a subsonic hydrogen jet that matches the dilution characteristics of an under-expanded jet. Furthermore this model is implemented in the TRUST LES computer code and in the Neptune-CFD RANS computer code in order to simulate some helium dispersion experiments. Finally results from the CFD simulations are compared to the experimental results and the effect of the exact shape of the tunnel is also assessed by comparing simulations with idealized flat walls and real scanned walls.
Role of Flame-expansion Wave Interactions on Burning Rate Enhancement and Flame Acceleration in Hydrogen-air Mixtures

Hydrogen flames are much thinner than hydrocarbon flames. They have a higher propensity to wrinkle and are subject to thermo-diffusive instabilities in lean conditions. The large scale experiments of Sherman under partially vented conditions have shown that the transition to detonation is possible with only modest flame acceleration to approximately 200 m/s which is much lower than the commonly accepted limits corresponding to choked flames. At present the reason for this transition is not known. Vented H2-air explosions have also demonstrated the role played by expansion/flame interactions in deforming the flame. The state of the art on flame burning rate enhancement by expansion waves will be provided along with the recent experimental and numerical results of head on interaction of flames with an expansion wave conducted in our group. We show that the expansion wave interaction can generate local burning rate increases by more than an order of magnitude. The role of thermo-diffusive instability is also assessed. The mechanism of flame deformation is via the vorticity generation by the misaligned pressure gradient controlled by the expansion wave and the density gradient of the flame. Expansion waves originating from the unburned gas severely elongate the cells until the flame folds burn out. Expansion waves originating from the burned gas side first invert the flames then elongate them by the same mechanism. The rate of elongation is controlled by the volumetric expansion of the gas and the curvature-enhanced growth.
Hydrogen Dispersion Following Blowdown Releases into a Tunnel

This paper presents work undertaken by the HSE as part of the Hytunnel-CS project a consortium investigating safety considerations for fuel cell hydrogen (FCH) vehicles in tunnels and similar confined spaces. The test programme investigating hydrogen dispersion in tunnels involved simulating releases analogous to Thermally activated Pressure Relief Devices (TPRDs) typically found on hydrogen vehicles into the HSE Tunnel facility. The releases were scaled and based upon four scenarios: cars buses and two different train designs. The basis for this scaling was the size of the tunnel and the expected initial mass flow rates of the releases scenarios. The results of the 12 tests completed have been analysed in two ways: the initial mass flow rates of the tests were calculated based upon facility measurements and the Able-Noble equations of state for comparison to the intended initial flow rate; and observations of the hydrogen dispersion in the tunnel were made based on 15 hydrogen sensors arrayed along the tunnel. The calculated mass flow rates showed reasonable agreement with the intended initial conditions showing that the scaling methodology can be used to interpret the data based on the full-scale tunnel of interest. Observations of the hydrogen dispersion show an initial turbulent mixing followed by a movement of the mixed hydrogen/air cloud down the tunnel. No vertical stratification of the cloud was observed but this effect could be possible in longer tunnels or tunnels with larger diameters. Higher ventilation rates in the tunnel resulted in a reduction of the residence time of the hydrogen and a slight increase in the dilution.
The Global Shift to Hydrogen and Lessons from Outside Industry

The recognition of hydrogen as a technically viable combustion fuel and as an alternative to more carbon intensive technologies for all forms of industrial applications has resulted in significant global interest leading to both public and private investment. As with most shifts in technology public acceptance and its safe production and handling will be key to its growth as a widespread energy vector. Specific properties of hydrogen that may prompt concern from the public and that need to be considered in terms of its use and safe handling include the following:<br/>• Hydrogen in its natural state is a colourless odourless and tasteless gas that is combustible with very low ignition energy burns nearly invisibly and is explosive at a very wide range of concentrations with an oxidate.<br/>• Hydrogen as any other gas except oxygen is an asphyxiant in a confined space.<br/>• Hydrogen is an extremely small molecule and interacts with many materials which over time can alter the physical properties and can lead to embrittlement and failure. Additionally due to the small molecular size its permeation and diffusion characteristics make it more difficult to contain compared to other gases.<br/>As hydrogen production use and storage increases these properties will come under greater scrutiny and may raise questions surrounding the cost/benefit of the technology. Understanding how the public sees this technology in relation to their safety and daily lives is important in hydrogen’s adoption as a low carbon alternative. A review of deployable experience relevant to the handling of hydrogen in other industries will help us to understand the technology and experience necessary for ensuring the success of the scaling up of a hydrogen economy. The social considerations of the impacts should also be examined to consider acceptance of the technology as it moves into the mainstream.
Numerical Simulation Study on the Diffusion Characteristics of High-Pressure Hydrogen Gas Leakage in Confined Spaces

Hydrogen as one of the most promising renewable clean energy sources holds significant strategic importance and vast application potential. However as a high-energy combustible gas hydrogen poses risks of fire and explosion in the event of a leakage. Hydrogen production plants typically feature large spatial volumes and complex obstacles which can significantly influence the diffusion pathways and localized accumulation of hydrogen during a short-term high-volume release further increasing the risk of accidents. Implementing effective hydrogen leakage monitoring measures can mitigate these risks ensuring the safety of personnel and the environment to the greatest extent possible. Therefore this paper uses CFD methods to simulate the hydrogen leakage process in a hydrogen production plant. The study examines the molar fraction distribution characteristics of hydrogen in the presence of obstacles by varying the ventilation speed of the plant and the directions of leakage. The main conclusions are as follows: enhancing ventilation can effectively prevent the rapid increase in hydrogen concentration with higher ventilation speeds yielding better suppression. After a hydrogen leak in a confined space hydrogen tends to diffuse along the walls and accumulate in corner areas indicating that hydrogen monitoring equipment should be placed in corner locations.
Quantitative Risk Assessment for Hydrogen Systems: Model Development and Validation

Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) is a risk-informed approach that considers past performances and the likelihood of events and distinguishes must-haves from nice-to-haves. Following the approach applied for the HyRAM code developed by the Sandia National Laboratories a QRA toolkit for hydrogen systems was developed using MATLAB by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). Based on user inputs for system components and their operating parameters the toolkit calculates the consequence of a hydrogen leak from the system. The fatality likelihood can be estimated from the severity of a person’s exposure to radiant heat flux (from a jet fire) and overpressure (from an explosion). This paper presents a verification and validation exercise by comparing the CNL model predictions with the HyRAM code and available experimental data including a QRA case study for a locomotive. The analysis produces risk contours recommending personnel (employees/public) numbers time spent and safe separation distances near the incident (during maintenance or an accident). The case study demonstrated the importance of hydrogen leak sensors’ reliability for leak detection and isolation. The QRA toolkit calculates a more practical value of the safe separation distance for hydrogen installations and provides evidence to support communication with authorities and other stakeholders for decision-making.
A Non-dimensional Surrogate Model of Stratified Filling During Indoor, Plume-look Hydrogen Releases

Hydrogen is commonly used as feedstock in industrial processes and is regarded as a potential future energy carrier. However its reactivity and low density make it difficult to handle and store safely. Indoor hydrogen dispersion can cause a fire or explosion hazard if encountering an ignition source. Safety practices often use time expensive modelling techniques to estimate risk associated with hydrogen. A neural network based surrogate model could efficiently replace Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling in safety studies. To lower the dimensionality of this surrogate model a dimensional analysis based on Buckingham’s Pi-theorem is proposed. The dimensional analysis examines stratified filling and highlights the functional parameters involved in the process. Stratified filling occurs for buoyancy dominated releases and is characterized by layers of decreasing concentration starting at the ceiling of the enclosure and developing towards the bottom. The study involves four dimensional cases that were simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed dimensionless time and dimensionless volume. The setup considered in this paper consists of a parallelepiped enclosure with standard atmospheric conditions a single release source and one pressure outlet to ensure constant pressure during the release. The results of the CFD simulations show a distinct pattern in the relation of hydrogen molar fraction and dimensionless time. The pattern depends on the dimensionless height of the measurement location. A five-parameter logistic (5PL) function is proposed to fit the data from the CFD models. Overall the paper provides insights into the functional parameters involved in the evolution of hydrogen mass fractions during stratified filling. It provides a nondimensional surrogate model to compute the evolution of the local concentrations of hydrogen during the development of stratification layers.
Dispersion of Under-expanded Hydrogen-methane Blended Jets through a Circular Orifice

Blending hydrogen into natural gas and using existing natural gas infrastructure provides energy storage greenhouse gas emission reduction from combustion and other benefits as the world transitions to a hydrogen economy. Though this seems to be a simple and attractive technique there is a dearth of existing safety codes and standards and understanding the safety implications is warranted before implementation. In this paper we present some preliminary findings on the dispersion characteristics of hydrogen-methane blends performed under controlled conditions inside a laboratory. Experiments were performed at two different upstream pressures of 5 and 10 bar as the blends dispersed into air through a 1 mm diameter orifice. Blends of 25 50 and 75 vol-% hydrogen in methane were tested. Spatially resolved Raman signals from hydrogen methane and nitrogen were acquired simultaneously at 10 Hz using separate ICCD cameras from which the individual concentrations and jet boundaries could be determined. Finally a comparison between dispersion characteristics of blended fuel jets with pure hydrogen and pure methane jets was made.
Public Facing Safety and Education for Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure

Building safe and convenient fuelling stations is key to deploying the arrival of commercial/public-use fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). As the most public-facing hydrogen applications second only to the FCEVs hydrogen stations are an efficient tool to educate the public about hydrogen safety and normalize its use to fill up our vehicles. However as an emerging technology it is the industry’s responsibility to ensure that fuelling infrastructures are designed and maintained in accordance with established safety standards and thus that the fuelling process is inherently safe for all users. On the other end it is essential that consumers have all the necessary information at reach to help them feel safe while fuelling their zero-emission vehicles.<br/>This paper will provide a snapshot of the safety systems used to help protect members of the public using hydrogen fueling stations as well as the information used to educate people using this equipment. This will cover the different processes involved in hydrogen fueling stations the dangers that are present to customers and members of the public at these sites and the engineering design choices and equipment used to mitigate these dangers or prevent them from happening. Finally this paper will discuss the crucial role of understanding the dangers of hydrogen at a public level and showing the importance of educating the public about hydrogen infrastructure so that people will feel comfortable using it in their everyday lives.
Application of Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners for Hydrogen Mitigation: 2D Numerical Modeling and Experimental Validation

The widespread production and use of hydrogen (H2) requires safe handling due to its wide range of flammability and low ignition energy. In confined and semi-confined areas such as garages and tunnels a hydrogen leak will create a potential accumulation of flammable gases. Hence forced ventilation is required in such confined spaces to prevent hydrogen hazards. However this practice may incur higher operating costs and could become ineffective during a power outage. Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs) are defined as safety devices for preventing hydrogen accumulation in confined spaces. PARs have been widely adopted for hydrogen mitigation in nuclear containment buildings in worst case accident scenarios where forced ventilation is not feasible. PARs are equipped with catalyst plates that self-start due to hydrogen reacting with oxygen at relatively low concentrations (<2 vol. % H2 in air). The heat generated from the reaction creates a self-sustained flow continuously supplying the catalyst surface with fresh hydrogen and oxygen. In this study a 2D transient numerical model has been developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate the operation of PARs. The model was used to analyze the effect of surface reactions on the catalyst temperature flow dynamics self-start behaviour forced versus natural convective flow and steady-state hydrogen recombination rates. The model was also used to simulate carbon monoxide poisoning and its influence on the catalyst performance. Experimental data were used for model calibration and validation showing good agreement for different conditions. Overall the model provides novel insights into PARs operation such as radiation and poisoning effects on the catalyst plate. As a next step assessment of the effectiveness of PARs is underway to mitigate hydrogen hazards in selected confined and semi-confined areas including nuclear and non-nuclear applications.
Purging Hydrogen Distribution Pipelines: Literature Review, Description of Recent Experiments and Proposed Future Work

The aim of the H21 project is to undertake measurements analysis and field trials to support the safe repurposing of Great Britain’s natural gas distribution network for hydrogen. As part of this project work has been ongoing to identify aspects of existing natural gas procedures that will need to be modified for hydrogen and to support the development of new procedures. This has included a review of the scientific basis of current displacement purging practices analysis of the potential implications of switching from natural gas to hydrogen and experimental support work. The reduced density and viscosity of hydrogen means that minimum purging velocities should (in principle) be higher for hydrogen to avoid stratification and ensure adequate removal of the purged gas during pipeline purging operations. A complicating factor is the high molecular diffusivity of hydrogen (roughly three times that of natural gas) which causes hydrogen to mix over short distances more rapidly than natural gas. Current models for pipeline purging do not take into account the mixing effect related to molecular diffusion. The wider flammable limits lower ignition energy and greater potential for combustion to transition from deflagration to detonation with hydrogen means that indirect purging with nitrogen is currently being investigated for distribution pipelines. This paper reviews the ongoing analysis of hydrogen pipeline purging and discusses a potential future scientific programme of work aimed at developing a new pipeline purging model that accounts for molecular diffusion effects.
Calculating the Fundamental Parameters to Assess the Explosion Risk Due to Crossover in Electrolysers

With the predicted high demand of hydrogen projected to support the neutral carbon society transition in the coming years the production of hydrogen is set to increase alongside the demand. As electrolysis is set to be amongst the main solutions for green hydrogen production ensuring the safety of electrolysers during operation will become a central concern. This is mainly due to the crossover risk (hydrogen into oxygen or the other way around) in the separators as throughout the years several cases of incidents have been reported. This study aims to evaluate the methodologies for calculating H2/O2 detonation cell size and laminar flame velocity using detailed kinetic mechanisms at the operating conditions of electrolysers (up to 35 bar and 360 K). Therefore the modeling of H2/O2 and H2/Air shock tube delay times and laminar flame speeds at initial different pressures and temperature based on the GRI mech 3.0 [1] Mevel et al.[2] Li et al.[3] Lutz et al. [4] and Burke et al. [5] kinetic mechanisms were performed and compared with the available experimental data in the literature. In each case a best candidate mechanism was then chosen to build a database for the detonation cell size then for the laminar flame speeds up to the operating conditions of electrolysers (293-360K and 1-35 bar).
