A Coupled Transient Gas Flow Calculation with a Simultaneous Calorific-value-gradient Improved Hydrogen Tracking

Gas systems can provide considerable flexibility in integrated energy systems to accommodate hydrogen produced from Power-to-Hydrogen units using excess volatile renewable energy generation. To use the flexibility in integrated energy systems while ensuring a secure and reliable system operation gas system operators need to accurately and easily analyze the effects of varying hydrogen levels on the dynamic gas behavior and vice versa. Existing methods for hydrogen tracking however either solve the hydrogen propagation and dynamic gas behavior separately or must cope with a large inaccuracy. Hence existing methods do not allow an accurate and coupled analysis of gas systems in integrated energy systems considering varying hydrogen levels. This paper proposes a calorific-value-gradient method which can accurately track the propagation of varying hydrogen levels in a gas system even with large simulation time increments of up to one hour. The new method is joined and simultaneously solved with an implicit finite difference scheme describing the transient gas behavior in a single equation system in a coupled Newton–Raphson gas flow calculation. As larger simulation time increments can be chosen without reducing the accuracy the computation time can be strongly reduced compared to existing Euler-based methods. With its high accuracy and its coupled approach this paper provides gas system operators a method to accurately analyze how the propagation of hydrogen affects the entire gas system. With its coupled approach the presented method can enhance the investigation of integrated energy systems as the transient gas behavior and varying hydrogen propagation of the gas system can be easily included in such analyses.
Explosion Characteristics of Hydrogen-air and Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixtures at Elevated Pressures

An essential problem for the operation of high pressure water electrolyzers and fuel cells is the permissible contamination of hydrogen and oxygen. This contamination can create malfunction and in the worst case explosions in the apparatus and gas cylinders. In order to avoid dangerous conditions the exact knowledge of the explosion characteristics of hydrogen/air and hydrogen/oxygen mixtures is necessary. The common databases e.g. the CHEMSAFE® database published by DECHEMA BAM and PTB contains even a large number of evaluated safety related properties among other things explosion limits which however are mainly measured according to standard procedures under atmospheric conditions.<br/>Within the framework of the European research project “SAFEKINEX” and other research projects the explosion limits explosion pressures and rates of pressure rise (KG values) of H2/air and H2/O2 mixtures were measured at elevated conditions of initial pressures and temperatures by the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM). Empirical equations of the temperature influence could be deduced from the experimental values. An anomaly was found at the pressure influence on the upper explosion limits of H2/O2 and H2/air mixtures in the range of 20 bars. In addition explosion pressures and also rates of pressure rises have been measured for different hydrogen concentrations inside the explosion range. Such data are important for constructive explosion protection measures. Furthermore the mainly used standards for the determination of explosion limits have been compared. Therefore it was interesting to have a look at the systematic differences between the new EN 1839 tube and bomb method ASTM E 681-01 and German DIN 51649-1.
Measuring and Modelling Unsteady Radiation of Hydrogen Combustion

Burning hydrogen emits thermal radiation in UV NIR and IR spectral range. Especially in the case of large cloud explosion the risk of heat radiation is commonly underestimated due to the non-visible flame of hydrogen-air combustion. In the case of a real explosion accident organic substances or inert dust might be entrained from outer sources to produce soot or heated solids to substantially increase the heat release by continuum radiation. To investigate the corresponding combustion phenomena different hydrogen-air mixtures were ignited in a closed vessel and the combustion was observed with fast scanning spectrometers using a sampling rate up to 1000 spectra/s. In some experiments to take into account the influence of organic co-combustion a spray of a liquid glycol-ester and milk powder was added to the mixture. The spectra evaluation uses the BAM code of ICT to model bands of reaction products and thus to get the temperatures. The code calculates NIR/IR-spectra (1 - 10 μm) of non-homogenous gas mixtures of H2O CO2 CO NO and HCl taking into consideration also emission of soot particles. It is based on a single line group model and makes also use of tabulated data of H2O and CO2 and a Least Squares Fit of calculated spectra to experimental ones enables the estimation of flame temperatures. During hydrogen combustion OH emits an intense spectrum at 306 nm. This intermediary radical allows monitoring the reaction progress. Intense water band systems between 1.2 and 3 μm emit remarkable amounts of heat radiation according to a measured flame temperature of 2000 K. At this temperature broad optically-thick water bands between 4.5 μm and 10 μm contribute only scarcely to the total heat output. In case of co-combustion of organic materials additional emission bands of CO and CO2 as well as a continuum radiation of soot and other particles occur and particularly increase the total thermal output drastically.
Analysis Methodology for Hydrogen Behaviour in Accident Scenarios

Hydrogen is not more dangerous than current fossil energy carriers but it behaves differently. Therefore hydrogen specific analyses and countermeasures will be needed to support the development of safe hydrogen technologies. A systematic step-by-step procedure for the mechanistic analysis of hydrogen behaviour and mitigation in accidents is presented. The procedure can be subdivided into four main parts:<br/>1) 3D modelling of the H2-air mixture generation<br/>2) hazard evaluation for this mixture based on specifically developed criteria for flammability flame acceleration and detonation on-set<br/>3) numerical simulation of the appropriate combustion regime using verified 3D-CFD codes and<br/>4) consequence analysis based on the calculated pressure and temperature loads.
Hydrogen Embrittlement at Cleavage Planes and Grain Boundaries in Bcc Iron—Revisiting the First-Principles Cohesive Zone Model

Hydrogen embrittlement which severely affects structural materials such as steel comprises several mechanisms at the atomic level. One of them is hydrogen enhanced decohesion (HEDE) the phenomenon of H accumulation between cleavage planes where it reduces the interplanar cohesion. Grain boundaries are expected to play a significant role for HEDE since they act as trapping sites for hydrogen. To elucidate this mechanism we present the results of first-principles studies of the H effect on the cohesive strength of α-Fe single crystal (001) and (111) cleavage planes as well as on the Σ5(310)[001] and Σ3(112)[11¯0] symmetrical tilt grain boundaries. The calculated results show that within the studied range of concentrations the single crystal cleavage planes are much more sensitive to a change in H concentration than the grain boundaries. Since there are two main types of procedures to perform ab initio tensile tests different in whether or not to allow the relaxation of atomic positions which can affect the quantitative and qualitative results these methods are revisited to determine their effect on the predicted cohesive strength of segregated interfaces
Large Scale Experiments- Deflagration and Deflagration to Detonation within a Partial Confinement Similar to a Lane

About 20 years ago Fraunhofer ICT has performed large scale experiments with premixed hydrogen air mixtures [1]. A special feature has been the investigation of the combustion of the mixture within a partial confinement simulating some sort of a “lane” which may exist in reality within a hydrogen production or storage plant for example. Essentially three different types of tests have been performed: combustion of quiescent mixtures combustion of mixtures with artificially generated turbulence by means of a fan and combustion of mixtures with high speed flame jet ignition. The observed phenomena will be discussed on the basis of measured turbulence levels flame speeds and overpressures. Conditions for DDT concerning critical turbulence levels and flame speeds as well as a scaling rule for DDT related to the detonation cell size of the mixture can be derived from the experiments for this special test setup. The relevance of the results with respect to safety aspects of future hydrogen technology is assessed. Combustion phenomena will be highlighted by the presentation of impressive high speed film videos.
Hydrogen Onboard Storage: An Insertion of the Probabilistic Approach Into Standards & Regulations?

The growing attention being paid by car manufacturers and the general public to hydrogen as a middle and long term energy carrier for automotive purpose is giving rise to lively discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of this technology – also with respect to safety. In this connection the focus is increasingly and justifiably so on the possibilities offered by a probabilistic approach to loads and component characteristics: a lower weight obliged with a higher safety level basics for an open minded risk communication the possibility of a provident risk management the conservation of resources and a better and not misleading understanding of deterministic results. But in the case of adequate measures of standards or regulations completion there is a high potential of additional degrees of freedom for the designers obliged with a further increasing safety level. For this purpose what follows deals briefly with the terminological basis and the aspects of acceptance control conservation of resources misinterpretation of deterministic results and the application of regulations/standards.<br/>This leads into the initial steps of standards improvement which can be taken with relatively simple means in the direction of comprehensively risk-oriented protection goal specifications. By this it’s not focused on to provide to much technical details. It’s focused on the context of different views on probabilistic risk assessment. As main result some aspects of the motivation and necessity for the currently running pre-normative research studies within the 6th frame-work program of the EU will be shown.
The Structure and Flame Propagation Regimes in Turbulent Hydrogen Jets

Experiments on flame propagation regimes in a turbulent hydrogen jet with velocity and hydrogen concentration gradients have been performed at the FZK hydrogen test site HYKA. Horizontal stationary hydrogen jets released at normal and cryogenic temperatures of 290K and 80 and 35K with different nozzle diameters and mass flow rates in the range from 0.3 to 6.5 g/s have been investigated. Sampling probe method and laser PIV technique have been used to evaluate distribution of hydrogen concentration and flow velocity along and across the jet axis. High-speed photography (1000 fps) combined with a Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) system was used for the visual observation of the turbulent flame propagation. In order to investigate different flame propagation regimes the ignition position was changed along the jet axis. It was found that the maximum flame velocity and pressure loads can only occur if the hydrogen concentration at the ignition point exceeds 11% of hydrogen in air. In this case the flame propagates in both directions up- and downstream the jet flow whereas in the opposite case the flame propagates only downstream. Such a behavior is consistent with previous experiments according to that the flame is able to accelerate effectively only if the expansion rate σ of the H2-air mixture is higher than a critical value σ* = 3.75 (like for the 11% hydrogen-air mixture). The measured data allow conservative estimates of the safety distance and risk assessment for realistic hydrogen leaks.
Complex Hydrides as Solid Storage Materials- First Safety Tests

Hydrogen technology requires efficient and safe hydrogen storage systems. For this purpose storage in solid materials such as high capacity complex hydrides is studied intensely. Independent from the actual material to be used eventually any tank design will combine nanoscale powders of highly reactive material with pressurized hydrogen gas and so far little is known about the behaviour of these mixtures in case of incidents. For a first evaluation of a complex hydride in case of a tank failure NaAlH4 (doped with Ti) was investigated in a small scale tank failure tests. 80-100 ml of the material were filled into a heat exchanger tube and sealed under argon atmosphere with a burst disk. Subsequently the NaAlH4 was partially desorbed by heating. When the powder temperature reached 130 °C and the burst disk ruptured at 9 bar hydrogen overpressure the behaviour of the expelled powder was monitored using a high speed camera an IR camera as well as sound level meters. Expulsion of the hydrogen storage material into (dry) ambient atmosphere yields a dust cloud of finely dispersed powder which does not ignite spontaneously. Similar experiments including an external source of ignition (spark / water reacting with NaAlH4) yield a flame of reacting powder. The intensity will be compared to the reaction of an equivalent amount of pure hydrogen.
Polymer Composites for Tribological Applications in Hydrogen Environment

In the development of hydrogen technology special attention is paid to the technical problems of hydrogen storage. One possible way is cryogenic storage in liquid form. Generally cryo-technical machines need components with interacting surfaces in relative motion such as bearings seals or valves which are subjected to extreme conditions. Materials of such systems have to be resistant to friction-caused mechanical deformation at the surface low temperatures and hydrogen environment. Since materials failure can cause uncontrolled escape of hydrogen new material requirements are involved for these tribo-systems in particular regarding operability and reliability. In the past few years several projects dealing with the influence of hydrogen on the tribological properties of friction couples were conducted at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) Berlin. This paper reports some investigations carried out with polymer composites. Friction and wear were measured for continuous sliding and analyses of the worn surfaces were performed after the experiments. Tests were performed at room temperature in hydrogen as well as in liquid hydrogen.
An Intercomparison Exercise on the Capabilities of CFD Models to Predict Deflagration of a Large-Scale H2-Air Mixture in Open Atmosphere

This paper presents a compilation of the results supplied by HySafe partners participating in the Standard Benchmark Exercise Problem (SBEP) V2 which is based on an experiment on hydrogen combustion that is first described. A list of the results requested from participants is also included. The main characteristics of the models used for the calculations are compared in a very succinct way by using tables. The comparison between results together with the experimental data when available is made through a series of graphs. The results show quite good agreement with the experimental data. The calculations have demonstrated to be sensitive to computational domain size and far field boundary condition.
Thermal Loading Cases of Hydrogen High Pressure Storage Cylinders

Composite cylinders with metal liner are used for the storage of compressed hydrogen in automotive application. These hybrid pressure cylinders are designed for a nominal working pressure of up to 70 MPa. They also have to withstand a temperature range between -40°C and +85°C according GRPE draft [1] and for short periods up to a maximum temperature of 140°C during filling (fast filling) [2]. In order to exploit the material properties efficiently with a high degree of lightweight optimization and a high level of safety on the same time a better understanding of the structural behavior of hybrid designs is necessary. Work on this topic has been carried out in the frame of a work package on safety aspects and regulation (Subproject SAR) of the European IP StorHy (www.storhy.net). The temperature influence on the composite layers is distinctive due to there typical polymer material behavior. The stiffness of the composite layer is a function of temperature which influences global strains and stress levels (residual stresses) in operation. In order to do an accurate fatigue assessment of composite hybrid cylinders a realistic modeling of a representative temperature load is needed. For this climate data has been evaluated which were collected in Europe over a period of 30 years [3]. Assuming that the temperature follows a Gaussian (normal) distribution within the assessed period of 30 years it is possible to generate a frequency distribution for different temperature classes for the cold extreme and the hot extreme. Combining these distributions leads to the overall temperature range distribution (frequency over temperature classes). The climatic temperature influence the filling temperature and the pressure load have to be considered in combination with the operation profile of the storage cylinder to derive a complete load vector for an accurate assessment of the lifetime and safety level.
Impact of Hydrogen Admixture on Combustion Processes – Part I: Theory

Climate change is one of today’s most pressing global challenges. Since the emission of greenhouse gases is often closely related to the use and supply of energy the goal to avoid emissions requires a fundamental restructuring of the energy system including all parts of the technology chains from production to end-use. Natural gas is today one of the most important primary energy sources in Europe with utilization ranging from power generation and industry to appliances in the residential and commercial sector as well as mobility. As natural gas is a fossil fuel gas utilization is thus responsible for significant emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) a greenhouse gas. However the transformation of the gas sector with its broad variety of technologies and end-use applications is a challenge as a fuel switch is related to changing physical properties. Today the residential and commercial sector is the biggest end user sector for natural gas in the EU both in terms of consumption and in the number of installed appliances. Natural gas is used to provide space heating as well as hot water and is used in cooking and catering appliances with in total about 200 million gas-fired residential and commercial end user appliances installed. More than 40 % of the EU gas consumption is accounted for by the residential and commercial sector. The most promising substitutes for natural gas are biogases and hydrogen. The carbon-free fuel gas hydrogen may be produced e.g. from water and renewable electricity; therefore it can be produced with a greatly lowered carbon footprint and on a very large scale. As a gaseous fuel it can be transported stored and utilised in all end-use sectors that are served by natural gas today: Power plants industry commercial appliances households and mobility. Technologies and materials however need to be suitable for the new fuel. The injection of hydrogen into existing gas distribution for example will impact all gas-using equipment in the grids since these devices are designed and optimized to operate safely efficiently and with low pollutant emissions with natural gas as fuel. The THyGA project1 focusses on all technical aspects and the regulatory framework concerning the potential operation of domestic and commercial end user appliances with hydrogen / natural gas blends. The THyGA deliverables start with theoretical background from material science (D2.4) and combustion theory (this report) and extend to the project’s experimental campaign on hydrogen tolerance tests as well as reports on the status quo and potential future developments on rules and standards as well as mitigation strategies for coping with high levels of hydrogen admixture. By this approach the project aims at investigating which levels of hydrogen blending impact the various appliance technologies to which extent and to identify the regime in which a safe efficient and low-polluting operation is possible. As this is in many ways a question of combustion this report focuses on theoretical considerations about the impact of hydrogen admixture on combustion processes. The effects of hydrogen admixture on main gas quality properties as well as combustion temperatures laminar combustion velocities pollutant formation (CO NOx) safety-related aspects and the impact of combustion control are discussed. This overview provides a basis for subsequent steps of the project e.g. for establishing the testing program. A profound understanding of the impact on hydrogen on natural gas combustion is also essential for the development of mitigation strategies to reduce potential negative consequences of hydrogen admixture on appliances.

Validation of CFD Calculations Against Ignited Impinging Jet Experiments

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools have been increasingly employed for carrying out quantitative risk assessment (QRA) calculations in the process industry. However these tools must be validated against representative experimental data in order to have a real predictive capability. As any typical accident scenario is quite complex it is important that the CFD tool is able to predict combined release and ignition scenarios reasonably well. However this kind of validation is not performed frequently primarily due to absence of good quality data. For that reason the recent experiments performed by FZK under the HySafe internal project InsHyde (http://www.hysafe.org) are important. These involved vertically upwards hydrogen releases with different release rates and velocities impinging on a plate in two different geometrical configurations. The dispersed cloud was subsequently ignited and pressures recorded. These experiments are important not only for corroborating the underlying physics of any large-scale safety study but also for validating the important assumptions used in QRA. Blind CFD simulations of the release and ignition scenarios were carried out prior to the experiments to predict the results (and possibly assist in planning) of the experiments. The simulated dispersion results are found to correlate reasonably well with experimental data in terms of the gas concentrations. The overpressures subsequent to ignition obtained in the blind predictions could not be compared directly with the experiments as the ignition points were somewhat different but the pressure levels were found to be similar. Simulations carried out after the experiments with the same ignition position as those in the experiments compared reasonably well with the measurements in terms of the pressure level. This agreement points to the ability of the CFD tool FLACS to model such complex scenarios well. Nevertheless the experimental set-up can be considered to be small-scale and less severe than many accidents and real-life situations. Future large-scale data of this type will be valuable to confirm ability to predict large-scale accident scenarios.
Characterization of Materials in Pressurized Hydrogen Under Cyclic Loading at Service Conditions in Hydrogen Powered Engines

A new testing device for cyclic loading of specimens with a novel shape design is presented. The device was applied for investigations of fatigue of metallic specimens under pressurized hydrogen up to 300 bar at temperatures up to 200 °C. Main advantage of the specimen design is the very small amount of medium here hydrogen used for testing. This allows experiments with hazardous substances at lower safety level. Additionally no gasket for the load transmission is required. Woehler curves which show the influence of hydrogen on the fatigue behaviour of austenitic steel specimens at relevant service conditions in hydrogen powered engines are presented. Material and test conditions are in agreement with the cooperating industry.
Methodology of CFD Safety Analysis for Large-Scale Industrial Structures

The current work is devoted to problems connected with application of CFD tools for safety analysis of large-scale industrial structures. With the aim to preserve conservatism of overall process of multistage procedure of such analysis special efforts are required. A strategy which has to lead to obtaining of reliable results in CFD analysis is discussed. Different aspects of proposed strategy including: adequate choice of physical and numerical models procedure of validation simulations and problem of ‘under-resolved’ simulations are considered. For physical phenomena which could cause significant uncertainties in the course of scenario simulation an approach which complements CFD simulations by application of auxiliary criteria is presented. Physical basis and applicability of strong flame acceleration and detonation-to-deflagration transition criteria are discussed. In concluding part two examples of application of presented approach for nuclear power plant and workshop cell for hydrogen driven vehicles are presented.

This paper presents a compilation and discussion of the results supplied by HySafe partners participating in the Standard Benchmark Exercise Problem (SBEP) V1 which is based on an experiment on hydrogen release mixing and distribution inside a vessel. Each partner has his own point of view of the problem and uses a different approach to the solution. The main characteristics of the models employed for the calculations are compared. The comparison between results together with the experimental data when available is made. Relative deviations of each model from the experimental values are also included. Explanations and interpretations of the results are presented together with some useful conclusions for future work.
Pool Spreading and Vaporization of Liquid Hydrogen

An essential part of a safety analysis to evaluate the risks of a liquid hydrogen (LH2) containing system is the understanding of cryogenic pool spreading and its vaporization. It represents the initial step in an accident sequence with the inadvertent spillage of LH2 e.g. after failure of a transport container tank or the rupture of a pipeline. This stage of an accident scenario provides pertinent information as a source term for the subsequent analysis steps of atmospheric dispersion and at presence of an ignition source the combustion of the hydrogen-air vapor cloud. A computer model LAUV has been developed at the Research Center Juelich which is able to simulate the spreading and vaporization of a cryogenic liquid under various conditions such as different grounds (solid water). It is based on the so-called shallow-layer differential equations taking into account physical phenomena such as ice formation if the cryogen is spilled on a water surface. The presentation will give a description of the computer model and its validation against existing experimental data. Furthermore calculational results will be analyzed describing the prediction and quantification of the consequences of an LH2 spill for different cases. They also include the comparison of an LH2 spillage versus the corresponding release of other cryogens such as liquid natural gas liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen.
Experimental Study of Jet-formed Hydrogen-air Mixtures and Pressure Loads from their Deflagrations in Low Confined Surroundings

To provide more practical data for safety assessments a systematic study of explosion and combustion processes which can take place in mixtures produced by jet releases in realistic environmental conditions is required. The presented work is aimed to make step forward in this direction binding three inter-connected tasks: (i) study of horizontal and vertical jets (ii) study of the burnable clouds formed by jets in different geometry configurations and (iii) examination of combustion and explosion processes initiated in such mixtures. Test matrix for the jet experiments included variation of the release pressure and nozzle diameter with the aim to study details of the resulting hydrogen concentration and velocity profiles depending on the release conditions. In this study the following parameters were varied: mass flow rate jet nozzle diameter (to alter gas speed) and geometry of the hood located on top of the jet. The carried out experiments provided data on detailed structure for under-expanded horizontal and buoyant vertical jets and data on pressure loads resulted from deflagration of various mixtures formed by jet releases. The data on pressures waves generated in the conditions under consideration provides conservative estimation of pressure loads for realistic leaks.
Design of Catalytic Recombiners for Safe Removal of Hydrogen from Flammable Gas Mixtures

Several today’s and future applications in energy technology bear the risk of the formation of flammable hydrogen/air mixtures either due to the direct use of hydrogen or due to hydrogen appearing as a by-product. If there’s the possibility of hydrogen being released accidentally into closed areas countermeasures have to be implemented in order to mitigate the threat of an explosion. In the field of nuclear safety passive auto-catalytic recombiners (PAR) are well-known devices for reducing the risk of a hydrogen detonation in a nuclear power plant in the course of a severe accident. Hydrogen and oxygen react on catalyst materials like platinum or palladium already far below conventional flammability limits. The most important concern with regard to the utilization of hydrogen recombiners is the adequate removal of the reaction heat. Already low hydrogen concentrations may increase the system temperature beyond the self-ignition limit of hydrogen/air mixtures and may lead to an unintended ignition on hot parts of the PAR.<br/>Starting from the nuclear application since several years IEF-6 and LRST perform joint research in the field of passive auto-catalytic recombiners including experimental studies modelling and development of new design concepts. Recently approaches on specifically designed catalysts and on passive cooling devices have been successfully tested. In a design study both approaches are combined in order to provide means for efficient and safe removal of hydrogen. The paper summarizes results achieved so far and possible designs for future applications.
Hydrogen Detection- Visualisation of Hydrogen Using Non Invasive Optical Schlieren Technique BOS

The detection of hydrogen after its accidental release is not only important for research purposes but will be much more important under safety aspects for future applications when hydrogen should be a standard energy resource. At Fraunhofer ICT two principally different approaches were made: first the new optical background-oriented schlieren method (BOS) is used for the visualization of hydrogen distribution and mixing processes at a rate of up to 1000 frames per second. The results from experiments with small scale injection of hydrogen/air–mixtures into air flows and free jets of hydrogen and hydrogen/air–mixtures emerging from 1” hoses simulating exhaust pipes will be discussed and interpreted with support from selected high speed videos. Finally mixing zones and safety distances can be determined by this powerful method.

Introduction and commercialisation of hydrogen as an energy carrier of the future make great demands on all aspects of safety. Safety is a critical issue for innovations as it influences the economic attractiveness and public acceptance of any new idea or product. However research and safety expertise related to hydrogen is quite fragmented in Europe. The vision of a significant increased use of hydrogen as an energy carrier in Europe could not go ahead without strengthening and merging this expertise. This was the reason for the European Commission to support the launch on the first of March 2004 of a so-called Network of Excellence (NoE) on hydrogen safety: HySafe.

The paper presents the results of the CFD inter-comparison exercise SBEP-V3 performed within the activity InsHyde internal project of the HYSAFE network of excellence in the framework of evaluating the capability of various CFD tools and modelling approaches in predicting the physical phenomena associated to the short and long term mixing and distribution of hydrogen releases in confined spaces. The experiment simulated was INERIS-TEST-6C performed within the InsHyde project by INERIS consisting of a 1 g/s vertical hydrogen release for 240 s from an orifice of 20 mm diameter into a rectangular room (garage) of dimensions 3.78x7.2x2.88 m in width length and height respectively. Two small openings at the front and bottom side of the room assured constant pressure conditions. During the test hydrogen concentration time histories were measured at 12 positions in the room for a period up to 5160 s after the end of release covering both the release and the subsequent diffusion phases. The benchmark was organized in two phases. The first phase consisted of blind simulations performed prior to the execution of the tests. The second phase consisted of post calculations performed after the tests were concluded and the experimental results made available. The participation in the benchmark was high: 12 different organizations (2 non-HYSAFE partners) 10 different CFD codes and 8 different turbulence models. Large variation in predicted results was found in the first phase of the benchmark between the various modelling approaches. This was attributed mainly to differences in turbulence models and numerical accuracy options (time/space resolution and discretization schemes). During the second phase of the benchmark the variation between predicted results was reduced.
Fundamental Safety Testing and Analysis of Solid State Hydrogen Storage Materials and Systems

Hydrogen is seen as the future automobile energy storage media due to its inherent cleanliness upon oxidation and its ready utilization in fuel cell applications. Its physical storage in light weight low volume systems is a key technical requirement. In searching for ever higher gravimetric and volumetric density hydrogen storage materials and systems it is inevitable that higher energy density materials will be studied and used. To make safe and commercially acceptable systems it is important to understand quantitatively the risks involved in using and handling these materials and to develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies to handle unforeseen accidental events. To evaluate these materials and systems an IPHE sanctioned program was initiated in 2006 partnering laboratories from Europe North America and Japan. The objective of this international program is to understanding the physical risks involved in synthesis handling and utilization of solid state hydrogen storage materials and to develop methods to mitigate these risks. This understanding will support ultimate acceptance of commercially high density hydrogen storage system designs. An overview of the approaches to be taken to achieve this objective will be given. Initial experimental results will be presented on environmental exposure of NaAlH4 a candidate high density hydrogen storage compound. The tests to be shown are based on United Nations recommendations for the transport of hazardous materials and include air and water exposure of the hydride at three hydrogen charge levels in various physical configurations. Additional tests developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials were used to quantify the dust cloud ignition characteristics of this material which may result from accidental high energy impacts and system breach. Results of these tests are shown along with necessary risk mitigation techniques used in the synthesis and fabrication of a prototype hydrogen storage system.
Modelling of Lean Uniform and Non-Uniform Hydrogen-Air Mixture Explosions in a Closed Vessel

Simulation of hydrogen-air mixture explosions in a closed large-scale vessel with uniform and nonuniform mixture compositions was performed by the group of partners within the EC funded project “Hydrogen Safety as an Energy Carrier” (HySafe). Several experiments were conducted previously by Whitehouse et al. in a 10.7 m3 vertically oriented (5.7-m high) cylindrical facility with different hydrogen-air mixture compositions. Two particular experiments were selected for simulation and comparison as a Standard Benchmark Exercise (SBEP) problem: combustion of uniform 12.8% (vol.) hydrogen-air mixture and combustion of non-uniform hydrogen-air mixture with average 12.6% (vol.) hydrogen concentration across the vessel (vertical stratification 27% vol. hydrogen at the top of the vessel 2.5% vol. hydrogen at the bottom of the vessel); both mixtures were ignited at the top of the vessel. The paper presents modelling approaches used by the partners comparison of simulation results against the experiment data and conclusions regarding the non-uniform mixture combustion modelling in real-life applications.
Experimental Study of Hydrogen-Air Deflagrations in Flat Layer

In the present paper the results of experiments on study of high-speed deflagrations in flat layer of hydrogen-air mixtures unconfined from below are presented. The experiments were performed in two different rectangular channels: small-scale with mixture volume up to 0.4 m3 and large-scale with volume up to 5.5 m3. The main goal of the experiments was to examine the possibility of the layer geometries to maintain high-speed deflagration and detonation. With the aim to study a range of combustion regimes the experiments were performed varying degree of channel obstruction hydrogen concentration and thickness of the layer. Depending on the experimental conditions all major combustion regimes were observed: slow flame fast – ‘choked’ flame and steady-state detonation. It was found that minimum layer layer thickness in the range of 8 to 15 detonation cell widths is required for sustainable detonations.
Hydrogen-air Deflagrations in Open Atmosphere- Large Eddy Simulation Analysis of Experimental Data

The largest known experiment on hydrogen-air deflagration in the open atmosphere has been analysed by means of the large eddy simulation (LES). The combustion model is based on the progress variable equation to simulate a premixed flame front propagation and the gradient method to decouple the physical combustion rate from numerical peculiarities. The hydrodynamic instability has been partially resolved by LES and unresolved effects have been modelled by Yakhot's turbulent premixed combustion model. The main contributor to high flame propagation velocity is the additional turbulence generated by the flame front itself. It has been modelled based on the maximum flame wrinkling factor predicted by Karlovitz et al. theory and the transitional distance reported by Gostintsev with colleagues. Simulations are in a good agreement with experimental data on flame propagation dynamics flame shape and outgoing pressure wave peaks and structure. The model is built from the first principles and no adjustable parameters were applied to get agreement with the experiment.
Path to Hydrogen Competitiveness: A Cost Perspective

This latest Hydrogen Council report shows that the cost of hydrogen solutions will fall sharply within the next decade – and sooner than previously expected. As scale up of hydrogen production distribution equipment and component manufacturing continues cost is projected to decrease by up to 50% by 2030 for a wide range of applications making hydrogen competitive with other low-carbon alternatives and in some cases even conventional options.

The study is based on real industry data with 25000 data points gathered and analysed from 30 companies using a rigorous methodology. The data was collected and analytical support provided by McKinsey & Company and it represents the entire hydrogen value chain across four key geographies (US Europe Japan/Korea and China). Data was also reviewed by an independent advisory group comprised of recognised hydrogen and energy transition experts.

Hydrogen has the potential to be used by many countries as part of decarbonising the future energy system. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel ‘vector’ to store and transport energy produced in low-carbon ways. This could be particularly important in applications such as heating and transport where other solutions for low and zero carbon emission are difficult. To enable the safe uptake of hydrogen technologies it is important to develop the international scientific evidence base on the potential risks to safety and how to control them effectively. The International Association for Hydrogen Safety (known as IA HySAFE) is leading global efforts to ensure this. HSE hosted the 2018 IA HySAFE Biennial Research Priorities Workshop. A panel of international experts presented during nine key topic sessions: (1) Industrial and National Programmes; (2) Applications; (3) Storage; (4) Accident Physics – Gas Phase; (5) Accident Physics – Liquid/ Cryogenic Behaviour; (6) Materials; (7) Mitigation Sensors Hazard Prevention and Risk Reduction; (8) Integrated Tools for Hazard and Risk Assessment; (9) General Aspects of Safety.<br/>This report gives an overview of each topic made by the session chairperson. It also gives further analysis of the totality of the evidence presented. The workshop outputs are shaping international activities on hydrogen safety. They are helping key stakeholders to identify gaps in knowledge and expertise and to understand and plan for potential safety challenges associated with the global expansion of hydrogen in the energy system.
The Curious Case of the Conflicting Roles of Hydrogen in Global Energy Scenarios

As energy systems transition from fossil-based to low-carbon they face many challenges particularly concerning energy security and flexibility. Hydrogen may help to overcome these challenges with potential as a transport fuel for heating energy storage conversion to electricity and in industry. Despite these opportunities hydrogen has historically had a limited role in influential global energy scenarios. Whilst more recent studies are beginning to include hydrogen the role it plays in different scenarios is extremely inconsistent. In this perspective paper reasons for this inconsistency are explored considering the modelling approach behind the scenario scenario design and data assumptions. We argue that energy systems are becoming increasingly complex and it is within these complexities that new technologies such as hydrogen emerge. Developing a global energy scenario that represents these complexities is challenging and in this paper we provide recommendations to help ensure that emerging technologies such as hydrogen are appropriately represented. These recommendations include: using the right modelling tools whilst knowing the limits of the model; including the right sectors and technologies; having an appropriate level of ambition; and making realistic data assumptions. Above all transparency is essential and global scenarios must do more to make available the modelling methods and data assumptions used.
Radiation Damage of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Studied by Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy—A Review

Safe and long term operation of nuclear reactors is one of the most discussed challenges in nuclear power engineering. The radiation degradation of nuclear design materials limits the operational lifetime of all nuclear installations or at least decreases its safety margin. This paper is a review of experimental PALS/PLEPS studies of different nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels investigated over last twenty years in our laboratories. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) via its characteristics (lifetimes of positrons and their intensities) provides useful information about type and density of radiation induced defects. The new results obtained on neutron-irradiated and hydrogen ions implanted German steels were compared to those from the previous studies with the aim to evaluate different processes (neutron flux/fluence thermal treatment or content of selected alloying elements) to the microstructural changes of neutron irradiated RPV steel specimens. The possibility of substitution of neutron treatment (connected to new defects creation) via hydrogen ions implantation was analyzed as well. The same materials exposed to comparable displacement damage (dpa) introduced by neutrons and accelerated hydrogen ions shown that in the results interpretation the effect of hydrogen as a vacancy-stabilizing gas must be considered too. This approach could contribute to future studies of nuclear fission/fusion design steels treated by high levels of neutron irradiation.
Modelling and Optimization of a Flexible Hydrogen-fueled Pressurized PEMFC Power Plant for Grid Balancing Purposes

In a scenario characterized by an increasing penetration of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources and the need of fast-ramping grid-balancing power plants the EU project GRASSHOPPER aims to setup and demonstrate a highly flexible PEMFC Power Plant hydrogen fueled and scalable to MW-size designed to provide grid support.<br/>In this work different layouts proposed for the innovative MW-scale plant are simulated to optimize design and off-design operation. The simulation model details the main BoP components performances and includes a customized PEMFC model validated through dedicated experiments.<br/>The system may operate at atmospheric or mild pressurized conditions: pressurization to 0.7 barg allows significantly higher net system efficiency despite the increasing BoP consumptions. The additional energy recovery from the cathode exhaust with an expander gives higher net power and net efficiency adding up to 2%pt and reaching values between 47%LHV and 55%LHV for currents between 100% and 20% of the nominal value.
The Future Potential Hydrogen Demand in Energy-intensive Industries - A Site-specific Approach Applied to Germany

Hydrogen when based on renewable electricity can play a key role in the transition towards CO2-neutral industrial production since its use as an energy carrier as well as a feedstock in various industrial process routes is promising. At the same time a large-scale roll-out of hydrogen for industrial use would entail substantial impacts on the energy system which can only be assessed if the regional distribution of future hydrogen demand is considered. Here we assess the technical potential of hydrogen-based technologies for energy-intensive industries in Germany. The site-specific and process-specific bottom-up calculation considers 615 individual plants at 367 sites and results in a total potential hydrogen demand of 326 TWh/a. The results are available as an open dataset. Using hydrogen for non-energy-intensive sectors as well increases the potential hydrogen demand to between 482 and 534 TWh/a for Germany - based on today’s industrial structure and production output. This assumes that fossil fuels are almost completely replaced by hydrogen for process heating and feedstocks. The resulting hydrogen demand is very unevenly distributed: a few sites account for the majority of the overall potential and similarly the bulk of demand is concentrated in a few regions with steel and chemical clusters.

The goal of the EU Horizon 2020 RISE project 778307 “Hydrogen fuelled utility vehicles and their support systems utilising metal hydrides” (HYDRIDE4MOBILITY) is in addressing critical issues towards a commercial implementation of hydrogen powered forklifts using metal hydride (MH) based hydrogen storage and PEM fuel cells together with the systems for their refuelling at industrial customers facilities. For these applications high specific weight of the metallic hydrides has an added value as it allows counterbalancing of a vehicle with no extra cost. Improving the rates of H2 charge/discharge in MH on the materials and system level simplification of the design and reducing the system cost together with improvement of the efficiency of system “MH store-FC” is in the focus of this work as a joint effort of consortium uniting academic teams and industrial partners from two EU and associated countries Member States (Norway Germany Croatia) and two partner countries (South Africa and Indonesia).<br/>The work within the project is focused on the validation of various efficient and cost-competitive solutions including (i) advanced MH materials for hydrogen storage and compression (ii) advanced MH containers characterised by improved charge-discharge dynamic performance and ability to be mass produced (iii) integrated hydrogen storage and compression/refuelling systems which are developed and tested together with PEM fuel cells during the collaborative efforts of the consortium.<br/>This article gives an overview of HYDRIDE4MOBILITY project focused on the results generated during its first phase (2017–2019).
Review and Assessment of the Effect of Hydrogen Gas Pressure on the Embrittlement of Steels in Gaseous Hydrogen Environment

Hydrogen gas pressure is an important test parameter when considering materials for high-pressure hydrogen applications. A large set of data on the effect of hydrogen gas pressure on mechanical properties in gaseous hydrogen experiments was reviewed. The data were analyzed by converting pressures into fugacities (f) and by fitting the data using an f|n| power law. For 95% of the data sets |n| was smaller than 0.37 which was discussed in the context of (i) rate-limiting steps in the hydrogen reaction chain and (ii) statistical aspects. This analysis might contribute to defining the appropriate test fugacities (pressures) to qualify materials for gaseous hydrogen applications.
Irreproducibility in Hydrogen Storage Material Research

The storage of hydrogen in materials has received a significant amount of attention in recent years because this approach is widely thought to be one of the most promising solutions to the problem of storing hydrogen for use as an alternative energy carrier in a safe compact and affordable form. However there have been a number of high profile cases in which erroneous or irreproducible data have been published. Meanwhile the irreproducibility of research results in a wide range of disciplines has been the subject of an increasing amount of attention due to problems with some of the data in the literature. In this Perspective we provide a summary of the problems that have affected hydrogen storage material research. We also discuss the reasons behind them and possible ways of reducing the likelihood of further problems occurring in the future.
The Limitations of Hydrogen Blending in the European Gas Grid

In recent years various studies have put forward the prospect of relying on low-carbon or renewable gases such as green hydrogen (H2) or biomethane to replace the supply of natural gas. Mechanism of Action of Polytetrafluoroethylene Binder on the Performance and Durability of High-temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

In this work new insights into impacts of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder on high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (HT-PEFCs) are provided by means of various characterizations and accelerated stress tests. Cathodes with PTFE contents from 0 wt% to 60 wt% were fabricated and compared using electrochemical measurements. The results indicate that the cell with 10 wt% PTFE in the cathode catalyst layer (CCL) shows the best performance due to having the lowest mass transport resistance and cathode protonic resistance. Moreover cyclic voltammograms show that Pt (100) edge and corner sites are significantly covered by PTFE and phosphate anions when the PTFE content is higher than 25 wt%. Open-circuit and low load-cycling conditions are applied to accelerate degradation processes of the HT-PEFCs. The PTFE binder shows a network structure in the pores of the catalyst layer which reduces phosphoric acid leaching during the aging tests. In addition the high binder HT-PEFCs more easily suffer from a mass transport problem leading to more severe performance degradation.

Industrial and public interest in hydrogen technologies has risen strongly recently as hydrogen is the ideal means for medium to long term energy storage transport and usage in combination with renewable and green energy supply. In a future energy system the production storage and usage of green hydrogen is a key technology. Hydrogen is and will in future be even more used for industrial production processes as a reduction agent or for the production of synthetic hydrocarbons especially in the chemical industry and in refineries. Under certain conditions material based systems for hydrogen storage and compression offer advantages over the classical systems based on gaseous or liquid hydrogen. This includes in particular lower maintenance costs higher reliability and safety. Hydrogen storage is possible at pressures and temperatures much closer to ambient conditions. Hydrogen compression is possible without any moving parts and only by using waste heat. In this paper we summarize the newest developments of hydrogen carriers for storage and compression and in addition give an overview of the different research activities in this field.

Expectations for energy storage are high but large-scale underground hydrogen storage in porous media (UHSP) remains largely untested. This article identifies and discusses the scientific challenges of hydrogen storage in porous media for safe and efficient large-scale energy storage to enable a global hydrogen economy. To facilitate hydrogen supply on the scales required for a zero-carbon future it must be stored in porous geological formations such as saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. Large-scale UHSP offers the much-needed capacity to balance inter-seasonal discrepancies between demand and supply decouple energy generation from demand and decarbonise heating and transport supporting decarbonisation of the entire energy system. Despite the vast opportunity provided by UHSP the maturity is considered low and as such UHSP is associated with several uncertainties and challenges. Here the safety and economic impacts triggered by poorly understood key processes are identified such as the formation of corrosive hydrogen sulfide gas hydrogen loss due to the activity of microbes or permeability changes due to geochemical interactions impacting on the predictability of hydrogen flow through porous media. The wide range of scientific challenges facing UHSP are outlined to improve procedures and workflows for the hydrogen storage cycle from site selection to storage site operation. Multidisciplinary research including reservoir engineering chemistry geology and microbiology more complex than required for CH4 or CO2 storage is required in order to implement the safe efficient and much needed large-scale commercial deployment of UHSP.
Anchoring of Turbulent Premixed Hydrogen/Air Flames at Externally Heated Walls

A joint experimental and numerical investigation of turbulent flame anchoring at externally heated walls is presented. The phenomenon has primarily been studied for laminar flames and micro-combustion while this study focuses on large-scale applications and elevated Reynolds number flows. Therefore a novel burner design is developed and examined for a diverse set of operating conditions. Hydroxyl radical chemiluminescence measurements are employed to validate the numerical method. The numerical investigation evaluates the performance of various hydrogen/air kinetics Reynolds-averaged turbulence models and the eddy dissipation concept (EDC) as a turbulence-chemistry interaction model. Simulation results show minor differences between detailed chemical mechanisms but pronounced deviations for a reduced kinetic. The baseline k-ω turbulence model is assessed to most accurately predict flame front position and shape. Universal applicability of EDC modelling constants is contradicted. Conclusively the flame anchoring concept is considered a promising approach for pilot flames in continuous combustion devices.
Flexible Power and Hydrogen Production: Finding Synergy Between CCS and Variable Renewables

The expansion of wind and solar power is creating a growing need for power system flexibility. Dispatchable power plants with CO2 capture and storage (CCS) offer flexibility with low CO2 emissions but these plants become uneconomical at the low running hours implied by renewables-based power systems. To address this challenge the novel gas switching reforming (GSR) plant was recently proposed. GSR can alternate between electricity and hydrogen production from natural gas offering flexibility to the power system without reducing the utilization rate of the capital stock embodied in CCS infrastructure. This study assesses the interplay between GSR and variable renewables using a power system model which optimizes investment and hourly dispatch of 13 different technologies. Results show that GSR brings substantial benefits relative to conventional CCS. At a CO2 price of V100/ton inclusion of GSR increases the optimal wind and solar share by 50% lowers total system costs by 8% and reduces system emissions from 45 to 4 kgCO2/MWh. In addition GSR produces clean hydrogen equivalent to about 90% of total electricity demand which can be used to decarbonize transport and industry. GSR could therefore become a key enabling technology for a decarbonization effort led by wind and solar power.
Hydrogen and Hydrogen-derived Fuels through Methane Decomposition of Natural Gas – GHG Emissions and Costs

Hydrogen can be produced from the decomposition of methane (also called pyrolysis). Many studies assume that this process emits few greenhouse gas (GHG) because the reaction from methane to hydrogen yields only solid carbon and no CO2. This paper assesses the life-cycle GHG emissions and the levelized costs for hydrogen provision from methane decomposition in three configurations (plasma molten metal and thermal gas). The results of these configurations are then compared to electrolysis and steam methane reforming (SMR) with and without CO2capture and storage (CCS). Under the global natural gas supply chain conditions hydrogen from methane decomposition still causes significant GHG emissions between 43 and 97 g CO2-eq./MJ. The bandwidth is predominately determined by the energy source providing the process heat i.e. the lowest emissions are caused by the plasma system using renewable electricity. This configuration shows lower GHG emissions compared to the “classical” SMR (99 g CO2-eq./MJ) but similar emissions to the SMR with CCS (46 g CO2-eq./MJ). However only electrolysis powered with renewable electricity leads to very low GHG emissions (3 g CO2-eq./MJ). Overall the natural gas supply is a decisive factor in determining GHG emissions. A natural gas supply with below-global average GHG emissions can lead to lower GHG emissions of all methane decomposition configurations compared to SMR. Methane decomposition systems (1.6 to 2.2 €/kg H2) produce hydrogen at costs substantially higher compared to SMR (1.0 to 1.2 €/kg) but lower than electrolyser (2.5 to 3.0 €/kg). SMR with CCS has the lowest CO2abatement costs (24 €/t CO2-eq. other > 141 €/t CO2-eq.). Finally fuels derived from different hydrogen supply options are assessed. Substantially lower GHG emissions compared to the fossil reference (natural gas and diesel/gasoline) are only possible if hydrogen from electrolysis powered by renewable energy is used (>90% less). The other hydrogen pathways cause only slightly lower or even higher GHG emissions.
Renewable Power and Heat for the Decarbonisation of Energy-Intensive Industries

The present review provides a catalogue of relevant renewable energy (RE) technologies currently available (regarding the 2030 scope) and to be available in the transition towards 2050 for the decarbonisation of Energy Intensive Industries (EIIs). RE solutions have been classified into technologies based on the use of renewable electricity and those used to produce heat for multiple industrial processes. Electrification will be key thanks to the gradual decrease in renewable power prices and the conversion of natural-gas-dependent processes. Industrial processes that are not eligible for electrification will still need a form of renewable heat. Among them the following have been identified: concentrating solar power heat pumps and geothermal energy. These can supply a broad range of needed temperatures. Biomass will be a key element not only in the decarbonisation of conventional combustion systems but also as a biofuel feedstock. Biomethane and green hydrogen are considered essential. Biomethane can allow a straightforward transition from fossil-based natural gas to renewable gas. Green hydrogen production technologies will be required to increase their maturity and availability in Europe (EU). EIIs’ decarbonisation will occur through the progressive use of an energy mix that allows EU industrial sectors to remain competitive on a global scale. Each industrial sector will require specific renewable energy solutions especially the top greenhouse gas-emitting industries. This analysis has also been conceived as a starting point for discussions with potential decision makers to facilitate a more rapid transition of EIIs to full decarbonisation.

Study on Hydrogen from Renewable Resources in the EU

Hydrogen can be produced from a broad range of renewable energy sources acting as a unique energy hub providing low or zero emission energy to all energy consuming sectors. Technically and efficiently producing hydrogen from renewable sources is a key enabler for these developments.<br/>Traditionally hydrogen has been produced from fossil sources by steam methane reforming of natural gas. At present the technology of choice to produce renewable ‘green’ hydrogen is water electrolysis using renewable electricity. The FCH JU has been supporting research and development of electrolyser technology and application projects aiming to increase the energy efficiency of electrolytic hydrogen production from renewable sources and to reduce costs.<br/>This study complements these activities by focusing on renewable hydrogen generation other than electrolysis. In this report these alternative hydrogen generation technologies are described characterized by their technical capabilities maturity and economic performance and assessed for their future potential.<br/>A methodology has been devised to first identify and structure a set of relevant green hydrogen pathways (eleven pathways depicted in the figure below) analyse them at a level of detail allowing a selection of those technologies which fit into and promise early commercialization in the framework of FCH 2 JU’s funding program.<br/>These originally proposed eleven pathways use solar thermal energy sunlight or biomass as major energy input.
Methane Cracking as a Bridge Technology to the Hydrogen Economy

Shifting the fossil fuel dominated energy system to a sustainable hydrogen economy could mitigate climate change through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Because it is estimated that fossil fuels will remain a significant part of our energy system until mid-century bridge technologies which use fossil fuels in an environmentally cleaner way offer an opportunity to reduce the warming impact of continued fossil fuel utilization. Methane cracking is a potential bridge technology during the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy since it produces hydrogen with zero emissions of carbon dioxide. However methane feedstock obtained from natural gas releases fugitive emissions of methane a potent greenhouse gas that may offset methane cracking benefits. In this work a model exploring the impact of methane cracking implementation in a hydrogen economy is presented and the impact on global emissions of carbon dioxide and methane is explored. The results indicate that the hydrogen economy has the potential to reduce global carbon dioxide equivalent emissions between 0 and 27% when methane leakage from natural gas is relatively low methane cracking is employed to produce hydrogen and a hydrogen fuel cell is applied. This wide range is a result of differences between the scenarios and the CH4 leakage rates used in the scenarios. On the other hand when methane leakage from natural gas is relatively high methane steam reforming is employed to produce hydrogen and an internal combustion engine is applied the hydrogen economy leads to a net increase in global carbon dioxide equivalent emissions between 19 and 27%.
A Direct Synthesis of Platinum/Nickel Co-catalysts on Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Surface from Hydrometallurgical-type Process Streams

Solutions that simulate hydrometallurgical base metal process streams with high nickel (Ni) and minor platinum (Pt) concentrations were used to create Pt/Ni nanoparticles on TiO2 nanotube surfaces. For this electrochemical deposition – redox replacement (EDRR) was used that also allowed to control the nanoparticle size density and Pt/Ni content of the deposited nanoparticles. The Pt/Ni nanoparticle decorated titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2 nanotubes) become strongly activated for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution. Moreover EDRR facilitates nanoparticle formation without the need for any additional chemicals and is more effective than electrodeposition alone. Actually a 10000-time enrichment level of Pt took place on the TiO2 surface when compared to Pt content in the solution with the EDRR method. The results show that hydrometallurgical streams offer great potential as an alternative raw material source for industrial catalyst production when coupled with redox replacement electrochemistry.
Effects of Quantum Confinement of Hydrogen in Nanocavities – Experimental INS Results and New Insights

Current developments of non-relativistic quantum mechanics appear to predict and reveal counter-intuitive dynamical effects of hydrogen in nanostructured materials that are of considerable importance for basic research as well as for technological applications. In this review the experimental focus is on H2O and H molecules in carbon nanotubes and other nanocavities that have been experimentally investigated using the well-established technique of incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS). For instance the momentum and energy transfers as obtained from the commonly used standard data analysis techniques from a
(I) H2 molecule in a C-nanotube resulting in a roto-translational motion along the nanotube axis seems to (1) either violate the standard conservation laws or (2) to attribute to the H molecule undergoing translation the effective mass a.m.u. (atomic mass units) instead of the expected 2 a.m.u. A similar striking anomalous effect has been found in the neutron-H scattering from the
(II) H2O molecules in nano-channels of some solid materials in which O-H stretching vibrations along the channel axis are created.
The results of this scattering process seem to once again either violate the standard conservation laws or to attribute to the effective mass of the struck H2 molecule as a.m.u. instead of the expected value of 1 a.m.u. We show that these counterintuitive observations from the INS studies have no conventional interpretation within the standard non-relativistic scattering theory. However they can be qualitatively interpreted “from first principles” within the framework of modern theories of
(III) time-symmetric quantum dynamics as provided by the weak values (WV) and two-state- vector formalism (TSVF)
and/or
(IV) quantum correlations especially quantum discord (QD) and quantum thermodynamics (QTD).
The theoretical analysis provides an intuitive understanding of the experimental results gives strong evidence that the nano-structured cavities do represent quantum systems which participate significantly in the dynamics of the neutron-H scattering and surprisingly shows that new physical information can be derived from the experimental data. This latter point may also have far-reaching consequences for technology and material sciences (e.g. fuel cells H storage materials etc.). Moreover novel insights into the short-lived quantum dynamics and/or quantum information theory can be gained.

Power-to-Gas: Electrolysis and Methanation Status Review

This review gives a worldwide overview on Power-to-Gas projects producing hydrogen or renewable substitute natural gas focusing projects in central Europe. It deepens and completes the content of previous reviews by including hitherto unreviewed projects and by combining project names with details such as plant location. It is based on data from 153 completed recent and planned projects since 1988 which were evaluated with regards to plant allocation installed power development plant size shares and amounts of hydrogen or substitute natural gas producing examinations and product utilization phases. Cost development for electrolysis and carbon dioxide methanation was analyzed and a projection until 2030 is given with an outlook to 2050.<br/>The results show substantial cost reductions for electrolysis as well as for methanation during the recent years and a further price decline to less than 500 euro per kilowatt electric power input for both technologies until 2050 is estimated if cost projection follows the current trend. Most of the projects examined are located in Germany Denmark the United States of America and Canada. Following an exponential global trend to increase installed power today's Power-to-Gas applications are operated at about 39 megawatt. Hydrogen and substitute natural gas were investigated on equal terms concerning the number of projects.
Linking Ab Initio Data on Hydrogen and Carbon in Steel to Statistical and Continuum Descriptions

We present a selection of scale transfer approaches from the electronic to the continuum regime for topics relevant to hydrogen embrittlement. With a focus on grain boundary related hydrogen embrittlement we discuss the scale transfer for the dependence of the carbon solution behavior in steel on elastic effects and the hydrogen solution in austenitic bulk regions depending on Al content. We introduce an approximative scheme to estimate grain boundary energies for varying carbon and hydrogen population. We employ this approach for a discussion of the suppressing influence of Al on the substitution of carbon with hydrogen at grain boundaries which is an assumed mechanism for grain boundary hydrogen embrittlement. Finally we discuss the dependence of hydride formation on the grain boundary stiffness
Dynamic Operation of Fischer-Tropsch Reactors for Power-to-liquid Concepts: A Review

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is considered as a power-to-X (PtX) storage concept for converting temporally available excess energy to fuels or chemical compounds without the need of fossil resources. Fluctuating energy supplies demand a load-flexible energy system and a dynamically operating FTS reactor might be beneficial compared to traditional steady-state operations which rely on expensive upstream buffer capacities. This review provides an overview of recent experimental and simulation studies dealing with dynamic FTS operation and summarizes the main findings. The results are presented the two categories process intensification and PtX application. The review further discusses the experimentally difficult task of wide-ranging product characterization with a high temporal resolution. While dynamic reactor operation is often related to a complicated process control which challenges a save and efficient reactor performance the literature findings indicate that for dynamic FTS operation such concerns might not be as critical as assumed at least within well-known boundaries. Researchers further agree that dynamic operation might be a tool for process intensification. Especially hydrogen pulsing seems to be a potentially beneficial operating technique to remove accumulated liquid products restore initial catalyst activity and increase diesel-range productivity. The main challenge in this context is the prevention of high methane selectivity. A lucid future engineering goal seems to be the combination of the two applications: a robust and reliable FTS reactor in a PtX scenario that not only handles a fluctuating feed but uses such variations for process enhancement.
Market Segmentation of Domestic and Commercial Natural Gas Appliances

The main goal of the project is to enable the wide adoption of H2NG (hydrogen in natural gas) blends by closing knowledge gaps regarding technical impacts on residential and commercial gas appliances. The project consortium will identify and recommend appropriate codes and standards that should be adapted to answer the needs and develop a strategy for addressing the challenges for new and existing appliances.<br/>This deliverable on market segmentation is part of work package 2 and provides a quantitative segmentation of the gas appliance market in terms of appliance population numbers. It therefore prepares the project partners to perform the subsequent selection of the most representative product types to be tested in the laboratories of the THyGA partners.<br/>The classification is developed to categorise appliances installed in the field based on available statistics calculation methods and estimations. As a result appliance populations are provided for each technology segment that draw a representative picture of the installed end-use appliances within the European Union in 2020.
Modeling of Hydrogen Flame Dynamics in Narrow Gap with Bendable Walls

A concept of volume porosity together with model of moving walls were elaborated and implemented into the COM3D code. Additionally to that a support of real-time data exchange with finite-element code ABAQUS - © Dassault Systèmes provided possibility to perform simulations of the gas-dynamic simultaneously with geometrical adaptation of environmental conditions. Based on the data obtained in the KIT combustion experiments in narrow gaps the authors performed a series of the simulation on the combustion in the corresponding conditions. Obtained numerical results demonstrated good agreement with the observed experimental data. These data were also compared with those obtained in the simulation without wall bending where simulation showed considerably different combustion regime. Application of the developed technique allows to obtain results unreachable without accounting on wall displacements which demonstrates massive over-estimation of the pressures observed during flame propagation.
Pressurized Hydrogen from Charged Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Systems by Electrochemical Hydrogen Compression

We demonstrate that the combination of hydrogen release from a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system with electrochemical hydrogen compression (EHC) provides three decisive advantages over the state-of-the-art hydrogen provision from such storage system: a) The EHC device produces reduced hydrogen pressure on its suction side connected to the LOHC dehydrogenation unit thus shifting the thermodynamic equilibrium towards dehydrogenation and accelerating the hydrogen release; b) the EHC device compresses the hydrogen released from the carrier system thus producing high value compressed hydrogen; c) the EHC process is selective for proton transport and thus the process purifies hydrogen from impurities such as traces of methane. We demonstrate this combination for the production of compressed hydrogen (absolute pressure of 6 bar) from perhydro dibenzyltoluene at dehydrogenation temperatures down to 240 °C in a quality suitable for fuel cell operation e.g. in a fuel cell vehicle. The presented technology may be highly attractive for providing compressed hydrogen at future hydrogen filling stations that receive and store hydrogen in a LOHC-bound manner.
Validation of a 3d Multiphase-multicomponent CFD Model for Accidental Liquid and Gaseous Hydrogen Releases

As hydrogen-air mixtures are flammable in a wide range of concentrations and the minimum ignition energy is low compared to hydrocarbon fuels the safe handling of hydrogen is of utmost importance. Additional hazards may arise with the accidental spill of liquid hydrogen. Such a release of LH2 leads to a formation of a cryogenic pool a dynamic vaporization process and consequently a dispersion of gaseous hydrogen into the environment. Several LH2 release experiments as well as modelling approaches address this phenomenology. In contrast to existing approaches a new CFD model capable of simulating liquid and gaseous distribution was developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich. It is validated against existing experiments and yields no substantial lacks in the physical model and reveals a qualitatively consistent prediction. Nevertheless the deviation between experiment and simulation raises questions on the completeness of the database in particular with regard to the boundary conditions and available measurements.
Kinetic Parameters Estimation via Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) and Comparison of Cylindrical and Spherical Reactors Performance for CO2 Hydrogenation to Hydrocarbons

Climate change and global warming as well as growing global demand for hydrocarbons in industrial sectors make great incentives to investigate the utilization of CO2 for hydrocarbons production. Therefore finding an in-depth understanding of the CO2 hydrogenation reactors along with simulating reactor responses to different operating conditions are of paramount importance. However the reaction mechanisms for CO2 hydrogenation and their corresponding kinetic parameters have been disputable yet. In this regard considering the previously proposed Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson (LHHW) mechanism which considered CO2 hydrogenation as a combination of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactions and using a one-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous non-isothermal model kinetic parameters of the rate expressions are estimated via fitting experimental and modelling data through a novel swarm intelligence optimization technique called dragonfly algorithm (DA). The predicted reactants conversion using DA algorithm are closer to the experimental data (with about 4% error) comparing to those obtained by the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm and are in significant agreement with available literature data. The proposed model is used to assess the effect of reactor configuration on the performance and temperature fluctuations. Results show that axial flow spherical reactor (AFSR) and radial flow spherical reactor (RFSR) exhibiting the same surface area with that of the cylindrical reactor (CR) i.e. AFSR-2 and RFSR-2-i are the most efficient exhibiting hydrocarbons selectivity of 40.330% and 40.286% at CO2 conversion of 53.763% and 53.891%. In addition it is revealed that the location of the jacket has an essential role in controlling the reactor temperature.
Review on the Influence of Temperature upon Hydrogen Effects in Structural Alloys

It is well-documented experimentally that the influence of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of structural alloys like austenitic stainless steels nickel superalloys and carbon steels strongly depends on temperature. A typical curve plotting any hydrogen-affected mechanical property as a function of temperature gives a temperature THEmax where the degradation of this mechanical property reaches a maximum. Above and below this temperature the degradation is less. Unfortunately the underlying physico-mechanical mechanisms are not currently understood to the level of detail required to explain such temperature effects. Though this temperature effect is important to understand in the context of engineering applications studies to explain or even predict the effect of temperature upon the mechanical properties of structural alloys could not be identified. The available experimental data are scattered significantly and clear trends as a function of chemistry or microstructure are difficult to see. Reported values for THEmax are in the range of about 200–340 K which covers the typical temperature range for the design of structural components of about 230–310 K (from −40 to +40 °C). That is the value of THEmax itself as well as the slope of the gradient might affect the materials selection for a dedicated application. Given the current lack of scientific understanding a statistical approach appears to be a suitable way to account for the temperature effect in engineering applications. This study reviews the effect of temperature upon hydrogen effects in structural alloys and proposes recommendations for test temperatures for gaseous hydrogen applications
Atomistic Modelling of Light-element Co-segregation at Structural Defects in Iron

Studying the behaviour of hydrogen in the vicinity of extended defects such as grain boundaries dislocations nanovoids and phase boundaries is critical in understanding the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement. A key complication in this context is the interplay between hydrogen and other segregating elements. Modelling the competition of H with other light elements requires an efficient description of the interactions of compositionally complex systems with the system sizes needed to appropriately describe extended defects often precluding the use of direct ab initio approaches. In this regard we have developed novel electronic structure approaches to understand the energetics and mutual interactions of light elements at representative structural features in high-strength ferritic steels. Using this approach we examine the co-segregation of hydrogen with carbon at chosen grain boundaries in α-iron. We find that the strain introduced by segregated carbon atoms at tilt grain boundaries increases the solubility of hydrogen close to the boundary plane giving a higher H concentration in the vicinity of the boundary than in a carbon-free case. Via simulated tensile tests we find that the simultaneous presence of carbon and hydrogen at grain boundaries leads to a significant decrease in the elongation to fracture compared with the carbon-free case.
Energetics of LOHC: Structure-Property Relationships from Network of Thermochemical Experiments and in Silico Methods

The storage of hydrogen is the key technology for a sustainable future. We developed an in silico procedure which is based on the combination of experimental and quantum-chemical methods. This method was used to evaluate energetic parameters for hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions of various pyrazine derivatives as a seminal liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) that are involved in the hydrogen storage technologies. With this in silico tool the tempo of the reliable search for suitable LOHC candidates will accelerate dramatically leading to the design and development of efficient materials for various niche applications.
In Situ Neutron Radiography Investigations of Hydrogen Related Processes in Zirconium Alloys

In situ neutron radiography experiments can provide information about diffusive processes and the kinetics of chemical reactions. The paper discusses requirements for such investigations. As examples of the zirconium alloy Zircaloy-4 the hydrogen diffusion the hydrogen uptake during high-temperature oxidation in steam and the reaction in nitrogen/steam and air/steam atmospheres results of in situ neutron radiography investigations are reviewed and their benefit is discussed.
A Review of Decarbonization Options for the Glass Industry

The glass industry is part of the energy-intensive industry posing a major challenge to fulfill the CO2 reduction targets of the Paris Climate Agreement. The segments of the glass industry e.g. container or flat glass are quite diverse and attribute to different glass products with different requirements to product quality and various process options. To address the challenge of decarbonizing the glass industry firstly an inventory of current glass products processes and applied technologies in terms of energy efficiency and CO2 emissions is conducted. Secondly decarbonization options are identified and structured according to fuel substitution waste heat recovery and process intensification. Due to the high share of energy-related CO2 emissions electrical melting and hydrogen combustion or a combination of both are the most promising options to decarbonize the glass industry but further research design adjustments and process improvements are necessary. Furthermore electricity and hydrogen prices have to decrease or fossil fuels must become more expensive to be cost-competitive relative to fossil fuels and respective infrastructures have to be constructed or adjusted. Various heat recovery options have great potential for CO2 savings but can be technically challenging or have not yet been considered for techno-economic reasons.
Critical Materials for Water Electrolysers at the Example of the Energy Transition in Germany

The present work aims to identify critical materials in water electrolysers with potential future supply constraints. The expected rise in demand for green hydrogen as well as the respective implications on material availability are assessed by conducting a case study for Germany. Furthermore the recycling of end‐of‐life (EoL) electrolysers is evaluated concerning its potential in ensuring the sustainable supply of the considered materials. As critical materials bear the risk of raising production costs of electrolysers substantially this article examines the readiness of this technology for industrialisation from a material perspective. Except for titanium the indicators for each assessed material are scored with a moderate to high (platinum) or mostly high (iridium scandium and yttrium) supply risk. Hence the availability of these materials bears the risk of hampering the scale‐up of electrolysis capacity. Although conventional recycling pathways for platinum iridium and titanium already exist secondary material from EoL electrolysers will not reduce the dependence on primary resources significantly within the period under consideration—from 2020 until 2050. Notably the materials identified as critical are used in PEM and high temperature electrolysis whereas materials in alkaline electrolysis are not exposed to significant supply risks.
Multiscale Modelling of Hydrogen Transport and Segregation in Polycrystalline Steels

A key issue in understanding and effectively managing hydrogen embrittlement in complex alloys is identifying and exploiting the critical role of the various defects involved. A chemo-mechanical model for hydrogen diffusion is developed taking into account stress gradients in the material as well as microstructural trapping sites such as grain boundaries and dislocations. In particular the energetic parameters used in this coupled approach are determined from ab initio calculations. Complementary experimental investigations that are presented show that a numerical approach capable of massive scale-bridging up to the macroscale is required. Due to the wide range of length scales accounted for we apply homogenisation schemes for the hydrogen concentration to reach simulation dimensions comparable to metallurgical process scales. Via a representative volume element approach an ab initio based scale bridging description of dislocation-induced hydrogen aggregation is easily accessible. When we extend the representative volume approach to also include an analytical approximation for the ab initio based description of grain boundaries we find conceptual limitations that hinder a quantitative comparison to experimental data in the current stage. Based on this understanding the development of improved strategies for further efficient scale bridging approaches is foreseen.

Origin of the Catalytic Activity at Graphite Electrodes in Vanadium Flow Batteries

For many electrochemical devices that use carbon-based materials such as electrolyzers supercapacitors and batteries oxygen functional groups (OFGs) are considered essential to facilitate electron transfer. Researchers implement surface-active OFGs to improve the electrocatalytic properties of graphite felt electrodes in vanadium flow batteries. Herein we show that graphitic defects and not OFGs are responsible for lowering the activation energy barrier and thus enhance the charge transfer properties. This is proven by a thermal deoxygenation procedure in which specific OFGs are removed before electrochemical cycling. The electronic and microstructural changes associated with deoxygenation are studied by quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopy. The removal of oxygen groups at basal and edge planes improves the activity by introducing new active edge sites and carbon vacancies. OFGs hinder the charge transfer at the graphite–electrolyte interface. This is further proven by modifying the sp2 plane of graphite felt electrodes with oxygen-containing pyrene derivatives. The electrochemical evolution of OFGs and graphitic defects are studied during polarization and long-term cycling conditions. The hypothesis of increased activity caused by OFGs was refuted and hydrogenated graphitic edge sites were identified as the true reason for this increase.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Mechanism in Fatigue Behavior of Austenitic and Martensitic Stainless Steels

In the present study the influence of hydrogen on the fatigue behavior of the high strength martensitic stainless steel X3CrNiMo13-4 and the metastable austenitic stainless steels X2Crni19-11 with various nickel contents was examined in the low and high cycle fatigue regime. The focus of the investigations were the changes in the mechanisms of short crack propagation. Experiments in laboratory air with uncharged and precharged specimen and uncharged specimen in pressurized hydrogen were carried out. The aim of the ongoing investigation was to determine and quantitatively describe the predominant processes of hydrogen embrittlement and their influence on the short fatigue crack morphology and crack growth rate. In addition simulations were carried out on the short fatigue crack growth in order to develop a detailed insight into the hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms relevant for cyclic loading conditions. It was found that a lower nickel content and a higher martensite content of the samples led to a higher susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. In addition crack propagation and crack path could be simulated well with the simulation model.
Reliability of Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier-based Energy Storage in a Mobility Applications

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are a technology that allows storing hy-drogen in a safe and dense manner by reversible chemical conversion. They consti-tute a very promising option for energy storage transport and release combined withelectric power generation by fuel cells in large-scale applications like trains. In orderto establish trains running on LOHC it is mandatory to ensure the reliability of thesystem. This study evaluates various system configurations concerning reliabilityand resilience. The fault tree analysis method has been used to quantify the prob-ability of failure. The S-P matrix was applied to assess the different failure modes incontext of severity as well as their probability. The MTTF of the system can be morethan doubled by introducing single redundancy for the fuel cell and the reactor whilemore than two redundant components diminish the positive effect on reliability dueto higher complexity. It is estimated that the systems full functionality is available formore than 97% of its operating time.
Effect of Corrosion-induced Hydrogen Embrittlement and its Degradation Impact on Tensile Properties and Fracture Toughness of (Al-Cu-Mg) 2024 Alloy

In the present work the effect of artificial ageing of AA2024-T3 on the tensile mechanical properties and fracture toughness degradation due to corrosion exposure will be investigated. Tensile and fracture toughness specimens were artificially aged to tempers that correspond to Under-Ageing (UA) Peak-Ageing (PA) and Over-Ageing (OA) conditions and then were subsequently exposed to exfoliation corrosion environment. The corrosion exposure time was selected to be the least possible according to the experimental work of Alexopoulos et al. (2016) so as to avoid the formation of large surface pits trying to simulate the hydrogen embrittlement degradation only. The mechanical test results show that minimum corrosion-induced decrease in elongation at fracture was achieved for the peak-ageing condition while maximum was noticed at the under-ageing and over-ageing conditions. Yield stress decrease due to corrosion is less sensitive to tempering; fracture toughness decrease was sensitive to ageing heat treatment thus proving that the S΄ particles play a significant role on the corrosion-induced degradation.
Integrating System and Operator Perspectives for the Evaluation of Power-to-Gas Plants in the Future German Energy System

In which way and in which sectors will renewable energy be integrated in the German Energy System by 2030 2040 and 2050? How can the resulting energy system be characterised following a −95% greenhouse gas emission reduction scenario? Which role will hydrogen play? To address these research questions techno-economic energy system modelling was performed. Evaluation of the resulting operation of energy technologies was carried out from a system and a business point of view. Special consideration of gas technologies such as hydrogen production transport and storage was taken as a large-scale and long-term energy storage option and key enabler for the decarbonisation of the non-electric sectors. The broad set of results gives insight into the entangled interactions of the future energy technology portfolio and its operation within a coupled energy system. Amongst other energy demands CO2 emissions hydrogen production and future power plant capacities are presented. One main conclusion is that integrating the first elements of a large-scale hydrogen infrastructure into the German energy system already by 2030 is necessary for ensuring the supply of upscaling demands across all sectors. Within the regulatory regime of 2020 it seems that this decision may come too late which jeopardises the achievement of transition targets within the horizon 2050.
Electrochemical Hydrogen Production Powered by PVCSP Hybrid Power Plants A Modelling Approach for Cost Optimal System Design

Global trade of green hydrogen will probably become a vital factor in reaching climate neutrality. The sunbelt of the Earth has a great potential for large-scale hydrogen production. One promising pathway to solar hydrogen is to use economically priced electricity from photovoltaics (PV) for electrochemical water splitting. However storing electricity with batteries is still expensive and without storage only a small operating capacity of electrolyser systems can be reached. Combining PV with concentrated solar power (CSP) and thermal energy storage (TES) seems a good pathway to reach more electrolyser full load hours and thereby lower levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH). This work introduces an energy system model for finding cost-optimal designs of such PV/CSP hybrid hydrogen production plants based on a global optimization algorithm. The model includes an operational strategy which improves the interplay between PV and CSP part allowing also to store PV surplus electricity as heat. An exemplary study for stand-alone hydrogen production with an alkaline electrolyser (AEL) system is carried out. Three different locations with different solar resources are considered regarding the total installed costs (TIC) to obtain realistic LCOH values. The study shows that a combination of PV and CSP is an auspicious concept for large-scale solar hydrogen production leading to lower costs than using one of the technologies on its own. For today’s PV and CSP costs minimum levelized costs of hydrogen of 4.04 USD/kg were determined for a plant located in Ouarzazate (Morocco). Considering the foreseen decrease in PV and CSP costs until 2030 cuts the LCOH to 3.09 USD/kg while still a combination of PV and CSP is the most economic system.
Investigation of an Intensified Thermo-Chemical Experimental Set-Up for Hydrogen Production from Biomass: Gasification Process Performance—Part I

Biomass gasification for energy purposes has several advantages such as the mitigation of global warming and national energy independency. In the present work the data from an innovative and intensified steam/oxygen biomass gasification process integrating a gas filtration step directly inside the reactor are presented. The produced gas at the outlet of the 1 MWth gasification pilot plant was analysed in terms of its main gaseous products (hydrogen carbon monoxide carbon dioxide and methane) and contaminants. Experimental test sets were carried out at 0.25–0.28 Equivalence Ratio (ER) 0.4–0.5 Steam/Biomass (S/B) and 780–850 °C gasification temperature. Almond shells were selected as biomass feedstock and supplied to the reactor at approximately 120 and 150 kgdry/h. Based on the collected data the in-vessel filtration system showed a dust removal efficiency higher than 99%-wt. A gas yield of 1.2 Nm3dry/kgdaf and a producer gas with a dry composition of 27–33%v H2 23–29%v CO 31–36%v CO2 9–11%v CH4 and light hydrocarbons lower than 1%v were also observed. Correspondingly a Low Heating Value (LHV) of 10.3–10.9 MJ/Nm3dry and a cold gas efficiency (CGE) up to 75% were estimated. Overall the collected data allowed for the assessment of the preliminary performances of the intensified gasification process and provided the data to validate a simulative model developed through Aspen Plus software.
Cold Hydrogen Blowdown Release: An Inter-comparison Study

Hydrogen dispersion in stagnant environment resulting from blowdown of a vessel storing the gas at cryogenic temperature is simulated using different CFD codes and modelling strategies. The simulations are based on the DISCHA experiments that were carried out by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Pro-Science (PS). The selected test for the current study involves hydrogen release from a 2.815 dm3 volume tank with an initial pressure of 200 barg and temperature 80 K. During the release the hydrogen pressure in the tank gradually decreased. A total of about 139 gr hydrogen is released through a 4 mm diameter. The temperature time series and the temperature decay rate of the minimum value predicted by the different codes are compared with each other and with the experimentally measured ones. Recommendations for future experimental setup and for modeling approaches for similar releases are provided based on the present analysis. The work is carried out within the EU-funded project PRESLHY.

Recent Progress and New Perspectives on Metal Amide and Imide Systems for Solid-State Hydrogen Storage

Hydrogen storage in the solid state represents one of the most attractive and challenging ways to supply hydrogen to a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Although in the last 15 years a large variety of material systems have been identified as possible candidates for storing hydrogen further efforts have to be made in the development of systems which meet the strict targets of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Recent projections indicate that a system possessing: (i) an ideal enthalpy in the range of 20–50 kJ/mol H2 to use the heat produced by PEM fuel cell for providing the energy necessary for desorption; (ii) a gravimetric hydrogen density of 5 wt. % H2 and (iii) fast sorption kinetics below 110 ◦C is strongly recommended. Among the known hydrogen storage materials amide and imide-based mixtures represent the most promising class of compounds for on-board applications; however some barriers still have to be overcome before considering this class of material mature for real applications. In this review the most relevant progresses made in the recent years as well as the kinetic and thermodynamic properties experimentally measured for the most promising systems are reported and properly discussed.
A Review of the MSCA ITN ECOSTORE—Novel Complex Metal Hydrides for Efficient and Compact Storage of Renewable Energy as Hydrogen and Electricity

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is very versatile in energy storage applications. Developments in novel sustainable technologies towards a CO2-free society are needed and the exploration of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) as well as solid-state hydrogen storage applications based on metal hydrides can provide solutions for such technologies. However there are still many technical challenges for both hydrogen storage material and ASSBs related to designing low-cost materials with low-environmental impact. The current materials considered for all-solid-state batteries should have high conductivities for Na+ Mg2+ and Ca2+ while Al3+-based compounds are often marginalised due to the lack of suitable electrode and electrolyte materials. In hydrogen storage materials the sluggish kinetic behaviour of solid-state hydride materials is one of the key constraints that limit their practical uses. Therefore it is necessary to overcome the kinetic issues of hydride materials before discussing and considering them on the system level. This review summarizes the achievements of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) innovative training network (ITN) ECOSTORE the aim of which was the investigation of different aspects of (complex) metal hydride materials. Advances in battery and hydrogen storage materials for the efficient and compact storage of renewable energy production are discussed.
Tetrahydroborates: Development and Potential as Hydrogen Storage Medium

The use of fossil fuels as an energy supply becomes increasingly problematic from the point of view of both environmental emissions and energy sustainability. As an alternative hydrogen is widely regarded as a key element for a potential energy solution. However differently from fossil fuels such as oil gas and coal the production of hydrogen requires energy. Alternative and intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar power wind power etc. present multiple advantages for the production of hydrogen. On the one hand the renewable sources contribute to a remarkable reduction of pollutants released to the air and on the other hand they significantly enhance the sustainability of energy supply. In addition the storage of energy in form of hydrogen has a huge potential to balance an effective and synergetic utilization of renewable energy sources. In this regard hydrogen storage technology is a key technology towards the practical application of hydrogen as “energy carrier”. Among the methods available to store hydrogen solid-state storage is the most attractive alternative from both the safety and the volumetric energy density points of view. Because of their appealing hydrogen content complex hydrides and complex hydride-based systems have attracted considerable attention as potential energy vectors for mobile and stationary applications. In this review the progresses made over the last century on the synthesis and development of tetrahydroborates and tetrahydroborate-based systems for hydrogen storage purposes are summarized.
Potential for Hydrogen and Power-to-Liquid in a Low-carbon EU Energy System Using Cost Optimization

Hydrogen represents a versatile energy carrier with net zero end use emissions. Power-to-Liquid (PtL) includes the combination of hydrogen with CO2 to produce liquid fuels and satisfy mostly transport demand. This study assesses the role of these pathways across scenarios that achieve 80–95% CO2 reduction by 2050 (vs. 1990) using the JRC-EU-TIMES model. The gaps in the literature covered in this study include a broader spatial coverage (EU28+) and hydrogen use in all sectors (beyond transport). The large uncertainty in the possible evolution of the energy system has been tackled with an extensive sensitivity analysis. 15 parameters were varied to produce more than 50 scenarios. Results indicate that parameters with the largest influence are the CO2 target the availability of CO2 underground storage and the biomass potential.
Hydrogen demand increases from 7 mtpa today to 20–120 mtpa (2.4–14.4 EJ/yr) mainly used for PtL (up to 70 mtpa) transport (up to 40 mtpa) and industry (25 mtpa). Only when CO2 storage was not possible due to a political ban or social acceptance issues was electrolysis the main hydrogen production route (90% share) and CO2 use for PtL became attractive. Otherwise hydrogen was produced through gas reforming with CO2 capture and the preferred CO2 sink was underground. Hydrogen and PtL contribute to energy security and independence allowing to reduce energy related import cost from 420 bln€/yr today to 350 or 50 bln€/yr for 95% CO2 reduction with and without CO2 storage. Development of electrolyzers fuel cells and fuel synthesis should continue to ensure these technologies are ready when needed. Results from this study should be complemented with studies with higher spatial and temporal resolution. Scenarios with global trading of hydrogen and potential import to the EU were not included.

Solid State Hydrogen Storage in Alanates and Alanate-Based Compounds: A Review

The safest way to store hydrogen is in solid form physically entrapped in molecular form in highly porous materials or chemically bound in atomic form in hydrides. Among the different families of these compounds alkaline and alkaline earth metals alumino-hydrides (alanates) have been regarded as promising storing media and have been extensively studied since 1997 when Bogdanovic and Schwickardi reported that Ti-doped sodium alanate could be reversibly dehydrogenated under moderate conditions. In this review the preparative methods; the crystal structure; the physico-chemical and hydrogen absorption-desorption properties of the alanates of Li Na K Ca Mg Y Eu and Sr; and of some of the most interesting multi-cation alanates will be summarized and discussed. The most promising alanate-based reactive hydride composite (RHC) systems developed in the last few years will also be described and commented on concerning their hydrogen absorption and desorption performance.

The approach developed aims to identify the methodology that will be used to deliver the minimum cost for hydrogen infrastructure deployment using a mono-objective linear optimisation. It focuses on minimizing both capital and operation costs of the hydrogen transportation based on transportation via truck which represents the main focus of this paper and a cost-minimal pipeline system in the case of France and Germany. The paper explains the mathematical model describing the link between the hydrogen production via electrolysers and the distribution for mobility needs. The main parameters and the assumed scenario framework are explained. Subsequently the transportation of hydrogen via truck using different states of aggregation is analysed as well as the transformation and storage of hydrogen. This is used finally to build a linear programming aiming to minimize the sum of costs of hydrogen transportation between the different nodes and transformation/storage within the nodes.
Economic Analysis of Improved Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is a mature hydrogen production technology and there exists a range of economic assessments for available technologies. For advanced AWEs which may be based on novel polymer-based membrane concepts it is of prime importance that development comes along with new configurations and technical and economic key process parameters for AWE that might be of interest for further economic assessments. This paper presents an advanced AWE technology referring to three different sites in Europe (Germany Austria and Spain). The focus is on financial metrics the projection of key performance parameters of advanced AWEs and further financial and tax parameters. For financial analysis from an investor’s (business) perspective a comprehensive assessment of a technology not only comprises cost analysis but also further financial analysis quantifying attractiveness and supply/market flexibility. Therefore based on cash flow (CF) analysis a comprehensible set of metrics may comprise levelised cost of energy or respectively levelized cost of hydrogen (LCH) for cost assessment net present value (NPV) for attractiveness analysis and variable cost (VC) for analysis of market flexibility. The German AWE site turns out to perform best in all three financial metrics (LCH NPV and VC). Though there are slight differences in investment cost and operation and maintenance cost projections for the three sites the major cost impact is due to the electricity cost. Although investment cost is slightly lower and labor cost is significantly lower in Spain the difference can not outweigh the higher electricity cost compared to Germany. Given the assumption that the electrolysis operators are customers directly and actively participating in power markets and based on the regulatory framework in the three countries in this special case electricity cost in Germany is lowest. However as electricity cost is profoundly influenced by political decisions as well as the implementation of economic instruments for transforming electricity systems toward sustainability it is hardly possible to further improve electricity price forecasts.
Mind the Gap—A Socio-Economic Analysis on Price Developments of Green Hydrogen, Synthetic Fuels, and Conventional Energy Carriers in Germany

In recent years the development of energy prices in Germany has been frequently accompanied by criticism and warnings of socio-economic disruptions. Especially with respect to the electricity sector the debate on increasing energy bills was strongly correlated with the energy system transition. However whereas fossil fuels have rapidly increased in price recently renewable substitutes such as green hydrogen and synthetic fuels also enter the markets at comparatively high prices. On the other hand the present fossil fuel supply is still considered too low-priced by experts because societal greenhouse gas-induced environmental impact costs are not yet compensated. In this study we investigate the development of the price gap between conventional energy carriers and their renewable substitutes until 2050 as well as a suitable benchmark price incorporating the societal costs of specific energy carriers. The calculated benchmark prices for natural gas (6.3 ct kWh−1 ) petrol (9.9 ct kWh−1 ) and grey hydrogen from steam methane reformation (12 ct kWh−1 ) are nearly 300% above the actual prices for industry customers in 2020 but below the price peaks of early 2022. In addition the price gap between conventional fuels and green hydrogen will be completely closed before 2050 for all investigated energy carriers. Furthermore prognosed future price developments can be considered rather moderate compared to historic and especially to the recent price dynamics in real terms. A gradual implementation of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels next to increasing CO2 prices however may temporarily lead to further increasing expenses for energy but can achieve lower price levels comparable to those of 2020 in the long term.
Sustainability Assessment of Fuel Cell Buses in Public Transport

Hydrogen fuel cell (H2FC) buses operating in every day public transport services around Europe are assessed for their sustainability against environmental economic and social criteria. As part of this assessment the buses are evaluated against diesel buses both in terms of sustainability and in terms of meeting real world requirements with respect to operational performance. The study concludes that H2FC buses meet operability and performance criteria and are sustainable environmentally when ‘green’ hydrogen is used. The economic sustainability of the buses in terms of affordability achieves parity with their fossil fuel equivalent by 2030 when the indirect costs to human health and climate change are included. Societal acceptance by those who worked with and used the buses supports the positive findings of earlier studies although satisfactory operability and performance are shown to be essential to positive attitudes. Influential policy makers expressed positive sentiments only if ‘green’ hydrogen is used and the affordability issues can be addressed. No “show-stopper” is identified that would prevent future generations from using H2FC buses in public transport on a broad scale due to damage to the environment or to other factors that impinge on quality of life.
Potential of New Business Models for Grid Integrated Water Electrolysis

Grid integrated water electrolysers have the potential of coupling electric power systems subjected to high shares of renewable energy sources with sectors of hydrogen demand thus contributing to European decarbonization goals in future. We therefore investigate the business potential of future electrolyser applications in cross-commodity arbitrage trading by applying a complex power market simulation method for future scenarios and different European countries. Based on this we evaluate the potential of additional provision of grid services towards grid operators in order to increase the electrolyser utilization ratio. For this we use a method that identifies measures of transmission grid operators in order to ensure secure grid operation. In this context uncertain hydrogen prices and different sectors of hydrogen demand are addressed through sensitivities of different hydrogen sales prices. The analysis shows a high dependency of business model efficiency on the hydrogen price. While cross-commodity arbitrage trading can achieve profitability for the transportation sector applications for the industry sector and natural gas system are less efficient. The results however indicate that for these less efficient applications grid service provision can be an option of increasing the electrolyser utilization ratio thus increasing its profitability.
Experimental Investigation on the Burning Behavior of Homogenous H2-CO-Air Mixtures in an Obstructed Semi-confined Channel

In the current work the combustion behavior of hydrogen-carbon monoxide-air mixtures in semiconfined geometries is investigated in a large horizontal channel facility (dimensions 9 m x 3 m x 0.6 m (L x W x H)) as a part of a joint German nuclear safety project. In the channel with evenly distributed obstacles (blockage ratio 50%) and an open to air ground face homogeneous H2-CO-air mixtures are ignited at one end. The combustion behavior of the mixture is analyzed using the signals of pressure sensors modified thermocouples and ionization probes for flame front detection that are distributed along the channel ceiling. In the experiments various fuel concentrations (cH2 + cCO = 14 to 22 Vol%) with different H2:CO ratios (75:25 50:50 and 25:75) are used and the transition regions for a significant flame acceleration to sonic speed (FA) as well as to a detonation (DDT) are investigated. The conditions for the onset of these transitions are compared with earlier experiments performed in the same facility with H2-air mixtures. The results of this work will help to allow a more realistic estimation of the pressure loads generated by the combustion of H2-CO-air mixtures in obstructed semi-confined geometries.
Hydrogen Blowdown Release Experiments at Different Temperatures in the Discha-facility

In this work experiments on horizontal hydrogen jet releases from a 2.815 dm³ volume tank to the ambience are described. For the main experimental series tank valve and release line were cooled down to a temperature of approx. 80 K in a bath of liquid nitrogen. As a reference similar experiments were also performed with the uncooled tank at ambient temperature. The releases were carried out through four nozzles with different circular orifice diameters from 0.5 to 4 mm and started from initial tank pressures from 0.5 to 20 MPa (rel.). During the releases pressures and temperatures inside the vessel as well as inside the release line were measured. Outside the nozzle further temperature and hydrogen concentration measurements were performed along and besides the jet axis. The electrostatic field builtup in the jet was monitored using two field meters in different distances from the release nozzle and optical observation via photo and video-cameras was performed for the visualization of the H2-jet via the BOS-method. The experiments were performed in the frame of the EU-funded project PRESHLY in which several tests of this program were selected for a comparative computational study the results of which will also be presented at this conference. So on the one hand the paper gives a comprehensive description of the facility on the other hands it also describes the experimental procedure and the main findings.
Ammonia Production from Clean Hydrogen and the Implications for Global Natural Gas Demand

Non-energy use of natural gas is gaining importance. Gas used for 183 million tons annual ammonia production represents 4% of total global gas supply. 1.5-degree pathways estimate an ammonia demand growth of 3–4-fold until 2050 as new markets in hydrogen transport shipping and power generation emerge. Ammonia production from hydrogen produced via water electrolysis with renewable power (green ammonia) and from natural gas with CO2 storage (blue ammonia) is gaining attention due to the potential role of ammonia in decarbonizing energy value chains and aiding nations in achieving their net-zero targets. This study assesses the technical and economic viability of different routes of ammonia production with an emphasis on a systems level perspective and related process integration. Additional cost reductions may be driven by optimum sizing of renewable power capacity reducing losses in the value chain technology learning and scale-up reducing risk and a lower cost of capital. Developing certification and standards will be necessary to ascertain the extent of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain as well as improving the enabling conditions including innovative finance and de-risking for facilitating international trade market creation and large-scale project development.
Study of the Microstructural and First Hydrogenation Properties of TiFe Alloy with Zr, Mn and V as Additives

In this paper we report the effect of adding Zr + V or Zr + V + Mn to TiFe alloy on microstructure and hydrogen storage properties. The addition of only V was not enough to produce a minimum amount of secondary phase and therefore the first hydrogenation at room temperature under a hydrogen pressure of 20 bars was impossible. When 2 wt.% Zr + 2 wt.% V or 2 wt.% Zr + 2 wt.% V + 2 wt.% Mn is added to TiFe the alloy shows a finely distributed Ti2Fe-like secondary phase. These alloys presented a fast first hydrogenation and a high capacity. The rate-limiting step was found to be 3D growth diffusion controlled with decreasing interface velocity. This is consistent with the hypothesis that the fast reaction is likely to be the presence of Ti2Fe-like secondary phases that act as a gateway for hydrogen.
Simulation of a Hydrogen-Air Diffusion Flame under Consideration of Component-Specific Diffusivities

This work deals with the numerical investigation of a three-dimensional laminar hydrogenair diffusion flame in which a cylindrical fuel jet is surrounded by in-flowing air. To calculate the distribution of gas molecules the model solves the species conservation equation for N-1 components using infinity fast chemistry and irreversible chemical reaction. The consideration of the component-specific diffusion has a strong influence on the position of the high-temperature zone as well as on the concentration distribution of the individual gas molecules. The calculations of the developed model predict the radial and axial species and temperature distribution in the combustion chamber comparable to those from previous publications. Deviations due to a changed burner geometry and air supply narrow the flame structure by up to 50% and the high-temperature zones merge toward the central axis. Due to the reduced inflow velocity of the hydrogen the high-temperature zones develop closer to the nozzle inlet of the combustion chamber. As the power increases the length of the cold hydrogen jet increases. Furthermore the results show that the axial profiles of temperature and mass fractions scale quantitatively with the power input by the fuel.
Deployment of Fuel Cell Vehicles and Hydrogen Refueling Station Infrastructure: A Global Overview and Perspectives

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can complement other electric vehicle technologies as a zeroemission technology and contribute to global efforts to achieve the emission reduction targets. This article spotlights the current deployment status of fuel cells in road transport. For this purpose data collection was performed by the Advanced Fuel Cells Technology Collaboration Programme. Moreover the available incentives for purchasing a fuel cell vehicle in different countries were reviewed and future perspectives summarized. Based on the collected information the development trends in the last five years were analyzed and possible further trends that could see the realization of the defined goals derived. The number of registered vehicles was estimated to be 51437 units with South Korea leading the market with 90% of the vehicles being concentrated in four countries. A total of 729 hydrogen refueling stations were in operation with Japan having the highest number of these. The analysis results clearly indicate a very positive development trend for fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen refueling stations in 2021 with the highest number of new vehicles and stations in a single year paralleling the year’s overall economic recovery. Yet a more ambitious ramp-up in the coming years is required to achieve the set targets.
On the Climate Impacts of Blue Hydrogen Production

Natural gas based hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage is referred to as blue hydrogen. If substantial amounts of CO2 from natural gas reforming are captured and permanently stored such hydrogen could be a low-carbon energy carrier. However recent research raises questions about the effective climate impacts of blue hydrogen from a life cycle perspective. Our analysis sheds light on the relevant issues and provides a balanced perspective on the impacts on climate change associated with blue hydrogen. We show that such impacts may indeed vary over large ranges and depend on only a few key parameters: the methane emission rate of the natural gas supply chain the CO2 removal rate at the hydrogen production plant and the global warming metric applied. State-of-the-art reforming with high CO2 capture rates combined with natural gas supply featuring low methane emissions does indeed allow for substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to both conventional natural gas reforming and direct combustion of natural gas. Under such conditions blue hydrogen is compatible with low-carbon economies and exhibits climate change impacts at the upper end of the range of those caused by hydrogen production from renewable-based electricity. However neither current blue nor green hydrogen production pathways render fully “net-zero” hydrogen without additional CO2 removal.
Climate Impact Reduction Potentials of Synthetic Kerosene and Green Hydrogen Powered Mid-Range Aircraft Concepts

One of aviation’s major challenges for the upcoming decades is the reduction in its climate impact. As synthetic kerosene and green hydrogen are two promising candidates their potentials in decreasing the climate impact is investigated for the mid-range segment. Evolutionary advancements for 2040 are applied first with an conventional and second with an advanced low-NOx and low-soot combustion chamber. Experts and methods from all relevant disciplines are involved starting from combustion turbofan engine overall aircraft design fleet level and climate impact assessment allowing a sophisticated and holistic evaluation. The main takeaway is that both energy carriers have the potential to strongly reduce the fleet level climate impact by more than 75% compared with the reference. Applying a flight-level constraint of 290 and a cruise Mach number of 0.75 causing 5% higher average Direct Operating Costs (DOC) the reduction is even more than 85%. The main levers to achieve this are the advanced combustion chamber an efficient contrail avoidance strategy in this case a pure flight-level constraint and the use of CO2 neutral energy carrier in a descending priority order. Although vehicle efficiency gains only lead to rather low impact reduction they are very important to compensate the increased costs of synthetic fuels or green hydrogen.
Law and Policy Review on Green Hydrogen Potential in ECOWAS Countries

This paper aims to review existing energy-sector and hydrogen-energy-related legal policy and strategy documents in the ECOWAS region. To achieve this aim current renewable-energyrelated laws acts of parliament executive orders presidential decrees administrative orders and memoranda were analyzed. The study shows that ECOWAS countries have strived to design consistent legal instruments regarding renewable energy in developing comprehensive legislation and bylaws to consolidate it and to encourage investments in renewable energy. Despite all these countries having a legislative basis for regulating renewable energy there are still weaknesses that revolve around the law and policy regarding its possible application in green hydrogen production and use. The central conclusion of this review paper is that ECOWAS member states presently have no official hydrogen policies nor bylaws in place. The hydrogen rise presents a challenge and opportunity for members to play an important role in the fast-growing global hydrogen market. Therefore these countries need to reform their regulatory frameworks and align their policies by introducing green hydrogen production in order to accomplish their green economy transition for the future and to boost the continent’s sustainable development.
Solid-State Hydrogen Storage for a Decarbonized Society

Humanity is confronted with one of the most significant challenges in its history. The excessive use of fossil fuel energy sources is causing extreme climate change which threatens our way of life and poses huge social and technological problems. It is imperative to look for alternate energy sources that can replace environmentally destructive fossil fuels. In this scenario hydrogen is seen as a potential energy vector capable of enabling the better and synergic exploitation of renewable energy sources. A brief review of the use of hydrogen as a tool for decarbonizing our society is given in this work. Special emphasis is placed on the possibility of storing hydrogen in solid-state form (in hydride species) on the potential fields of application of solid-state hydrogen storage and on the technological challenges solid-state hydrogen storage faces. A potential approach to reduce the carbon footprint of hydrogen storage materials is presented in the concluding section of this paper.
Boosting the H2 Production Efficiency via Photocatalytic Organic Reforming: The Role of Additional Hole Scavenging System

The simultaneous photocatalytic H2 evolution with environmental remediation over semiconducting metal oxides is a fascinating process for sustainable fuel production. However most of the previously reported photocatalytic reforming showed nonstoichiometric amounts of the evolved H2 when organic substrates were used. To explain the reasons for this phenomenon a careful analysis of the products and intermediates in gas and aqueous phases upon the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from oxalic acid using Pt/TiO2 was performed. A quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) was used for the continuous flow monitoring of the evolved gases while high performance ion chromatography (HPIC) isotopic labeling and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were employed to understand the reactions in the solution. The entire consumption of oxalic acid led to a ~30% lower H2 amount than theoretically expected. Due to the contribution of the photoKolbe reaction mechanism a tiny amount of formic acid was produced then disappeared shortly after the complete consumption of oxalic acid. Nevertheless a much lower concentration of formic acid was generated compared to the nonstoichiometric difference between the formed H2 and the consumed oxalic acid. Isotopic labeling measurements showed that the evolved H2 HD and/or D2 matched those of the solvent; however using D2O decreased the reaction rate. Interestingly the presence of KI as an additional hole scavenger with oxalic acid had a considerable impact on the reaction mechanism and thus the hydrogen yield as indicated by the QMS and the EPR measurements. The added KI promoted H2 evolution to reach the theoretically predictable amount and inhibited the formation of intermediates without affecting the oxalic acid degradation rate. The proposed mechanism by which KI boosts the photocatalytic performance is of great importance in enhancing the overall energy efficiency for hydrogen production via photocatalytic organic reforming.
Artificial Intelligence-Based Machine Learning toward the Solution of Climate-Friendly Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

The rapid conversion of conventional powertrain technologies to climate-neutral new energy vehicles requires the ramping of electrification. The popularity of fuel cell electric vehicles with improved fuel economy has raised great attention for many years. Their use of green hydrogen is proposed to be a promising clean way to fill the energy gap and maintain a zero-emission ecosystem. Their complex architecture is influenced by complex multiphysics interactions driving patterns and environmental conditions that put a multitude of power requirements and boundary conditions around the vehicle subsystems including the fuel cell system the electric motor battery and the vehicle itself. Understanding its optimal fuel economy requires a systematic assessment of these interactions. Artificial intelligence-based machine learning methods have been emerging technologies showing great potential for accelerated data analysis and aid in a thorough understanding of complex systems. The present study investigates the fuel economy peaks during an NEDC in fuel cell electric vehicles. An innovative approach combining traditional multiphysics analyses design of experiments and machine learning is an effective blend for accelerated data supply and analysis that accurately predicts the fuel consumption peaks in fuel cell electric vehicles. The trained and validated models show very accurate results with less than 1% error.
Synergistic Value in Vertically Integrated Power-to-Gas Energy Systems

In vertically integrated energy systems integration frequently entails operational gains that must be traded off against the requisite cost of capacity investments. In the context of the model analyzed in this study the operational gains are subject to inherent volatility in both the price and the output of the intermediate product transferred within the vertically integrated structure. Our model framework provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the value (NPV) of an integrated system to exceed the sum of two optimized subsystems on their own. We then calibrate the model in Germany and Texas for systems that combine wind energy with Power-to-Gas (PtG) facilities that produce hydrogen. Depending on the prices for hydrogen in different market segments we find that a synergistic investment value emerges in some settings. In the context of Texas for instance neither electricity generation from wind power nor hydrogen production from PtG is profitable on its own in the current market environment. Yet provided both subsystems are sized optimally in relative terms the attendant operational gains from vertical integration more than compensate for the stand-alone losses of the two subsystems.
Towards the Efficient and Time-accurate Simulations of Early Stages of Industrial Explosions

Combustion during a nuclear reactor accident can result in pressure loads that are potentially fatal for the structural integrity of the reactor containment or its safety equipment. Enabling efficient modelling of such safety-critical scenarios is the goal of ongoing work. In this paper attention is given to capturing early phases of flame propagation. Transient simulations that are not prohibitively expensive for use at industrial scale are required given that a typical flame propagation study takes a large number of simulation time steps to complete. An improved numerical method used in this work is based on explicit time integration by means of Strong Stability Preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta schemes. These allow an increased time step size for a given level of accuracy—reducing the overall computational effort. Furthermore a wide range of flow conditions is encountered in analysis of accelerating flames: from incompressible to potentially supersonic. In contrast numerical schemes for spatial discretization would often prove lacking in either stability or accuracy outside the intended flow regime—with density-based schemes being traditionally designed and applied to compressible (Ma>0.3) flows. In the present work a formulation of an all-speed density-based numerical flux scheme is used for simulation of slow flames starting from ignition. Validation was carried out using experiments with spherical lean hydrogen flames at laboratory scale. Turbulence conditions in the experiments correspond to those that can arise in a nuclear reactor containment during an accident. Results show that the new numerical method has the potential to predict flame speed and pressure rise at a reduced computational effort.
Current Legislative Framework for Green Hydrogen Production by Electrolysis Plants in Germany

(1) The German energy system transformation towards an entirely renewable supply is expected to incorporate the extensive use of green hydrogen. This carbon-free fuel allows the decarbonization of end-use sectors such as industrial high-temperature processes or heavy-duty transport that remain challenging to be covered by green electricity only. However it remains unclear whether the current legislative framework supports green hydrogen production or is an obstacle to its rollout. (2) This work analyzes the relevant laws and ordinances regarding their implications on potential hydrogen production plant operators. (3) Due to unbundling-related constraints potential operators from the group of electricity transport system and distribution system operators face lacking permission to operate production plants. Moreover ownership remains forbidden for them. The same applies to natural gas transport system operators. The case is less clear for natural gas distribution system operators where explicit regulation is missing. (4) It is finally analyzed if the production of green hydrogen is currently supported in competition with fossil hydrogen production not only by the legal framework but also by the National Hydrogen Strategy and the Amendment of the Renewable Energies Act. It can be concluded that in recent amendments of German energy legislation regulatory support for green hydrogen in Germany was found. The latest legislation has clarified crucial points concerning the ownership and operation of electrolyzers and the treatment of green hydrogen as a renewable energy carrier.
Iron as Recyclable Energy Carrier: Feasibility Study and Kinetic Analysis of Iron Oxide Reduction

Carbon-free and sustainable energy storage solutions are required to mitigate climate change. One possible solution especially for stationary applications could be the storage of energy in metal fuels. Energy can be stored through reduction of the oxide with green hydrogen and be released by combustion. In this work a feasibility study for iron as possible metal fuel considering the complete energy cycle is conducted. Based on equilibrium calculations it could be shown that the power-to-power efficiency of the iron/iron oxide cycle is 27 %. As technology development requires a more detailed description of both the reduction and the oxidation a first outlook is given on the kinetic analysis of the reduction of iron oxides with hydrogen. Based on thermogravimetric experiments using Fe2O3 Fe3O4 and FeO it could be shown that the reduction is a three-step process. The maximum reduction rate can be achieved with a hydrogen content of 25 %. Based on the experimental results a reaction mechanism and accompanied kinetic data were developed for description of Fe2O3 reduction with H2 under varying experimental conditions.
