Advances in Methanol Production and Utilization, with Particular Emphasis toward Hydrogen Generation via Membrane Reactor Technology

Methanol is currently considered one of the most useful chemical products and is a promising building block for obtaining more complex chemical compounds such as acetic acid methyl tertiary butyl ether dimethyl ether methylamine etc. Methanol is the simplest alcohol appearing as a colorless liquid and with a distinctive smell and can be produced by converting CO2 and H2 with the further benefit of significantly reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Indeed methanol synthesis currently represents the second largest source of hydrogen consumption after ammonia production. Furthermore a wide range of literature is focused on methanol utilization as a convenient energy carrier for hydrogen production via steam and autothermal reforming partial oxidation methanol decomposition or methanol–water electrolysis reactions. Last but not least methanol supply for direct methanol fuel cells is a well-established technology for power production. The aim of this work is to propose an overview on the commonly used feedstocks (natural gas CO2 or char/biomass) and methanol production processes (from BASF—Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik to ICI—Imperial Chemical Industries process) as well as on membrane reactor technology utilization for generating high grade hydrogen from the catalytic conversion of methanol reviewing the most updated state of the art in this field.
The Role of Hydrogen in a Decarbonised Future Transport Sector: A Case Study of Mexico

In recent years several approaches and pathways have been discussed to decarbonise the transport sector; however any effort to reduce emissions might be complex due to specific socio-economic and technical characteristics of different regions. In Mexico the transport sector is the highest energy consumer representing 38.9% of the national final energy demand with gasoline and diesel representing 90% of the sector´s total fuel consumption. Energy systems models are powerful tools to obtain insights into decarbonisation pathways to understand costs emissions and rate of deployment that could serve for energy policy development. This paper focuses on the modelling of the current Mexican transport system using the MUSE-MX multi-regional model with the aim to project a decarbonisation pathway through two different scenarios. The first approach being business as usual (BAU) which aims to analyse current policies implementation and the second being a goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Under the considered net zero scenario results show potential deployment of hydrogen-based transport technologies especially for subsectors such as lorries (100% H2 by 2050) and freight train (25% H2 by 2050) while cars and buses tend to full electrification by 2050.
Hydrogen Application as a Fuel in Internal Combustion Engines

Hydrogen is the energy vector that will lead us toward a more sustainable future. It could be the fuel of both fuel cells and internal combustion engines. Internal combustion engines are today the only motors characterized by high reliability duration and specific power and low cost per power unit. The most immediate solution for the near future could be the application of hydrogen as a fuel in modern internal combustion engines. This solution has advantages and disadvantages: specific physical chemical and operational properties of hydrogen require attention. Hydrogen is the only fuel that could potentially produce no carbon carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions. It also allows high engine efficiency and low nitrogen oxide emissions. Hydrogen has wide flammability limits and a high flame propagation rate which provide a stable combustion process for lean and very lean mixtures. Near the stoichiometric air–fuel ratio hydrogen-fueled engines exhibit abnormal combustions (backfire pre-ignition detonation) the suppression of which has proven to be quite challenging. Pre-ignition due to hot spots in or around the spark plug can be avoided by adopting a cooled or unconventional ignition system (such as corona discharge): the latter also ensures the ignition of highly diluted hydrogen–air mixtures. It is worth noting that to correctly reproduce the hydrogen ignition and combustion processes in an ICE with the risks related to abnormal combustion 3D CFD simulations can be of great help. It is necessary to model the injection process correctly and then the formation of the mixture and therefore the combustion process. It is very complex to model hydrogen gas injection due to the high velocity of the gas in such jets. Experimental tests on hydrogen gas injection are many but never conclusive. It is necessary to have a deep knowledge of the gas injection phenomenon to correctly design the right injector for a specific engine. Furthermore correlations are needed in the CFD code to predict the laminar flame velocity of hydrogen–air mixtures and the autoignition time. In the literature experimental data are scarce on air–hydrogen mixtures particularly for engine-type conditions because they are complicated by flame instability at pressures similar to those of an engine. The flame velocity exhibits a non-monotonous behavior with respect to the equivalence ratio increases with a higher unburnt gas temperature and decreases at high pressures. This makes it difficult to develop the correlation required for robust and predictive CFD models. In this work the authors briefly describe the research path and the main challenges listed above.
Optimal Decarbonization Strategies for an Industrial Port Area by Using Hydrogen as Energy Carrier

This article discusses possible strategies for decarbonizing the energy systems of an existing port. The approach consists in creating a complete superstructure that includes the use of renewable and fossil energy sources the import or local production of hydrogen vehicles and other equipment powered by Diesel electricity or hydrogen and the associated refuelling and storage units. Two substructures are then identified one including all these options the other considering also the addition of the energy demand of an adjacent steel industry. The goal is to select from each of these two substructures the most cost-effective configurations for 2030 and 2050 that meet the emission targets for those years under different cost scenarios for the energy sources and conversion/storage units obtained from the most reliable forecasts found in the literature. To this end the minimum total cost of all the energy conversion and storage units plus the associated infrastructures is sought by setting up a Mixed Integer Linear Programming optimization problem where integer variables handle the inclusion of the different generation and storage units and their activation in the operational phases. The comprehensive picture of possible solutions set allows identifying which options can most realistically be realized in the years to come in relation to the different assumed cost scenarios. Optimization results related to the scenario projected to 2030 indicate the key role played by Diesel hybrid and electric systems while considering the most stringent or much more stringent scenarios for emissions in 2050 almost all vehicles energy demand and industry hydrogen demand is met by hydrogen imported as ammonia by ship.
Hierarchical Model Predictive Control for Islanded and Grid-connected Microgrids with Wind Generation and Hydrogen Energy Storage Systems

This paper presents a novel energy management strategy (EMS) to control a wind-hydrogen microgrid which includes a wind turbine paired with a hydrogen-based energy storage system (HESS) i.e. hydrogen production storage and re-electrification facilities and a local load. This complies with the mini-grid use case as per the IEA-HIA Task 24 Final Report where three different use cases and configurations of wind farms paired with HESS are proposed in order to promote the integration of wind energy into the grid. Hydrogen production surpluses by wind generation are stored and used to provide a demand-side management solution for energy supply to the local and contractual loads both in the grid-islanded and connected modes with corresponding different control objectives. The EMS is based on a hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) in which long-term and short-term operations are addressed. The long-term operations are managed by a high-level MPC in which power production by wind generation and load demand forecasts are considered in combination with day-ahead market participation. Accordingly the hydrogen production and re-electrification are scheduled so as to jointly track the load demand maximize the revenue through electricity market participation and minimize the HESS operating costs. Instead the management of the short-term operations is entrusted to a low-level MPC which compensates for any deviations of the actual conditions from the forecasts and refines the power production so as to address the real-time market participation and the short time-scale equipment dynamics and constraints. Both levels also take into account operation requirements and devices’ operating ranges through appropriate constraints. The mathematical modeling relies on the mixed-logic dynamic (MLD) framework so that the various logic states and corresponding continuous dynamics of the HESS are considered. This results in a mixed-integer linear program which is solved numerically. The effectiveness of the controller is analyzed by simulations which are carried out using wind forecasts and spot prices of a wind farm in center-south of Italy.
An On-Board Pure H2 Supply System Based on A Membrane Reactor for A Fuel Cell Vehicle: A Theoretical Study

In this novel conceptual fuel cell vehicle (FCV) an on-board CH4 steam reforming (MSR) membrane reformer (MR) is considered to generate pure H2 for supplying a Fuel Cell (FC) system as an alternative to the conventional automobile engines. Two on-board tanks are forecast to store CH4 and water useful for feeding both a combustion chamber (designed to provide the heat required by the system) and a multi tubes Pd-Ag MR useful to generate pure H2 via methane steam reforming (MSR) reaction. The pure H2 stream is hence supplied to the FC. The flue gas stream coming out from the combustion chamber is used to preheat the MR feed stream by two heat exchangers and one evaporator. Then this theoretical work demonstrates by a 1-D model the feasibility of the MR based system in order to generate 5 kg/day of pure H2 required by the FC system for cruising a vehicle for around 500 km. The calculated CH4 and water consumptions were 50 and 70 kg respectively per 1 kg of pure H2. The on-board MR based FCV presents lower CO2 emission rates than a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle also resulting in a more environmentally friendly solution.
The Potential Role of Ammonia for Hydrogen Storage and Transport: A Critical Review of Challenges and Opportunities

Hydrogen is being included in several decarbonization strategies as a potential contributor in some hard-to-abate applications. Among other challenges hydrogen storage represents a critical aspect to be addressed either for stationary storage or for transporting hydrogen over long distances. Ammonia is being proposed as a potential solution for hydrogen storage as it allows storing hydrogen as a liquid chemical component at mild conditions. Nevertheless the use of ammonia instead of pure hydrogen faces some challenges including the health and environmental issues of handling ammonia and the competition with other markets such as the fertilizer market. In addition the technical and economic efficiency of single steps such as ammonia production by means of the Haber–Bosch process ammonia distribution and storage and possibly the ammonia cracking process to hydrogen affects the overall supply chain. The main purpose of this review paper is to shed light on the main aspects related to the use of ammonia as a hydrogen energy carrier discussing technical economic and environmental perspectives with the aim of supporting the international debate on the potential role of ammonia in supporting the development of hydrogen pathways. The analysis also compares ammonia with alternative solutions for the long-distance transport of hydrogen including liquefied hydrogen and other liquid organic carriers such as methanol.
Underground Hydrogen Storage Safety: Experimental Study of Hydrogen Diffusion through Caprocks

Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) provides a large-scale and safe solution to balance the fluctuations in energy production from renewable sources and energy consumption but requires a proper and detailed characterization of the candidate reservoirs. The scope of this study was to estimate the hydrogen diffusion coefficient for real caprock samples from two natural gas storage reservoirs that are candidates for underground hydrogen storage. A significant number of adsorption/desorption tests were carried out using a Dynamic Gravimetric Vapor/Gas Sorption System. A total of 15 samples were tested at the reservoir temperature of 45 °C and using both hydrogen and methane. For each sample two tests were performed with the same gas. Each test included four partial pressure steps of sorption alternated with desorption. After applying overshooting and buoyancy corrections the data were then interpreted using the early time approximation of the solution to the diffusion equation. Each interpretable partial pressure step provided a value of the diffusion coefficient. In total more than 90 estimations of the diffusion coefficient out of 120 partial pressure steps were available allowing a thorough comparison between the diffusion of hydrogen and methane: hydrogen in the range of 1 × 10−10 m2 /s to 6 × 10−8 m2 /s and methane in the range of 9 × 10−10 m2 /s to 2 × 10−8 m2 /s. The diffusion coefficients measured on wet samples are 2 times lower compared to those measured on dry samples. Hysteresis in hydrogen adsorption/desorption was also observed.
Modelling Large-scale Hydrogen Uptake in the Mexican Refinery and Power Sectors

Due to the emissions reduction commitments that Mexico compromised in the Paris Agreement several clean fuel and renewable energy technologies need to penetrate the market to accomplish the environmental goals. Therefore there is a need to develop achievable and realistic policies for such technologies to ease the decision-making on national energy strategies. Several countries are starting to develop large-scale green hydrogen production projects to reduce the carbon footprint of the multiple sectors within the country. The conversion sectors namely power and refinery are fundamental sectors to decarbonise due to their energy supply role. Nowadays the highest energy consumables of the country are hydrocarbons (more than 90%) causing a particular challenge for deep decarbonisation. The purpose of this study is to use a multi-regional energy system model of Mexico to analyse a decarbonisation scenario in line with the latest National Energy System Development Program. Results show that if the country wants to succeed in reducing 22% of its GHG emissions and 51% of its short-lived climate pollutants emissions green hydrogen could play a role in power generation in regions with higher energy demand growth rates. These results show regarding the power sector that H2 could represent 13.8 GW or 5.1% of the total installed capacity by 2050 while for the refinery sector H2 could reach a capacity of 157 PJ/y which is around 31.8% of the total share and it is mainly driven by the increasing demands of the transport industry and power sectors. Nevertheless as oil would still represent the largest energy commodity CCS technologies would have to be deployed for new and retrofitted refinery facilities.
Environmental Assessment of Hydrogen Utilization in Various Applications and Alternative Renewable Sources for Hydrogen Production: A Review

Rapid industrialization is consuming too much energy and non-renewable energy resources are currently supplying the world’s majority of energy requirements. As a result the global energy mix is being pushed towards renewable and sustainable energy sources by the world’s future energy plan and climate change. Thus hydrogen has been suggested as a potential energy source for sustainable development. Currently the production of hydrogen from fossil fuels is dominant in the world and its utilization is increasing daily. As discussed in the paper a large amount of hydrogen is used in rocket engines oil refining ammonia production and many other processes. This paper also analyzes the environmental impacts of hydrogen utilization in various applications such as iron and steel production rocket engines ammonia production and hydrogenation. It is predicted that all of our fossil fuels will run out soon if we continue to consume them at our current pace of consumption. Hydrogen is only ecologically friendly when it is produced from renewable energy. Therefore a transition towards hydrogen production from renewable energy resources such as solar geothermal and wind is necessary. However many things need to be achieved before we can transition from a fossil-fuel-driven economy to one based on renewable energy
Conversion of a Small-Size Passenger Car to Hydrogen Fueling: 0D/1D Simulation of EGR and Related Flow Limitations

Hydrogen is seen as a prime choice for complete replacement of gasoline so as to achieve zero-emissions energy and mobility. Combining the use of this alternative fuel with a circular economy approach for giving new life to the existing fleet of passenger cars ensures further benefits in terms of cost competitiveness. Transforming spark ignition (SI) engines to H2 power requires relatively minor changes and limited added components. Within this framework the conversion of a small-size passenger car to hydrogen fueling was evaluated based on 0D/1D simulation. One of the methods to improve efficiency is to apply exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) which also lowers NOx emissions. Therefore the previous version of the quasi-dimensional model was modified to include EGR and its effects on combustion. A dedicated laminar flame speed model was implemented for the specific properties of hydrogen and a purpose-built sub-routine was implemented to correctly model the effects of residual gas at the start of combustion. Simulations were performed in several operating points representative of urban and highway driving. One of the main conclusions was that highpressure recirculation was severely limited by the minimum flow requirements of the compressor. Low-pressure EGR ensured wider applicability and significant improvement of efficiency especially during partial-load operation specific to urban use. Another benefit of recirculation was that pressure rise rates were predicted to be more contained and closer to the values expected for gasoline fueling. This was possible due to the high tolerance of H2 to the presence of residual gas.
Italian Offshore Platform and Depleted Reservoir Conversion in the Energy Transition Perspective

New hypotheses for reusing platforms reaching their end-of-life have been investigated in several works discussing the potential conversions of these infrastructures from recreational tourism to fish farming. In this perspective paper we discuss the conversion options that could be of interest in the context of the current energy transition with reference to the off-shore Italian scenario. The study was developed in support of the development of a national strategy aimed at favoring a circular economy and the reuse of existing infrastructure for the implementation of the energy transition. Thus the investigated options include the onboard production of renewable energy hydrogen production from seawater through electrolyzers CO2 capture and valorization and platform reuse for underground fluid storage in depleted reservoirs once produced through platforms. Case histories are developed with reference to a typical fictitious platform in the Adriatic Sea Italy to provide an engineering-based approach to these different conversion options. The coupling of the platform with the underground storage to set the optimal operational conditions is managed through the forecast of the reservoir performance with advanced numerical models able to simulate the complexity of the phenomena occurring in the presence of coupled hydrodynamic geomechanical geochemical thermal and biological processes. The results of our study are very encouraging because they reveal that no technical environmental or safety issues prevent the conversion of offshore platforms into valuable infrastructure contributing to achieving the energy transition targets as long as the selection of the conversion option to deploy is designed taking into account the system specificity and including the depleted reservoir to which it is connected when relevant. Socio-economic issues were not investigated as they were out of the scope of the project.
Energy and Greenhouse Gases Life Cycle Assessment of Electric and Hydrogen Buses: A Real-world Case Study in Bolzano Italy

The transportation sector plays an important role in the current effort towards the control of global warming. Against this backdrop electrification is currently attracting attention as the life cycle environmental performance of different powertrain technologies is critically assessed. In this study a life cycle analysis of the public transportation buses was performed. The scope of the analysis is to compare the energy and global warming performances of the different powertrain technologies in the city fleet: diesel full electric and hydrogen buses. Real world monitored data were used in the analysis for the energy consumptions of the buses and to produce hydrogen in Bolzano. Compared to the traditional diesel buses the electric vehicles showed a 43% reduction of the non-renewable primary energy demand and a 33% of the global warming potential even in the worst consequential scenario considered. The switch to hydrogen buses leads to very different environmental figures: from very positive if it contributes to a further penetration of renewable electricity to hardly any difference if hydrogen from steam-methane reforming is used to clearly negative ones (approximately doubling the impacts) if a predominantly fossil electricity mix is used in the electrolysis.
Liquefied Hydrogen Value Chain: A Detailed Techno-economic Evaluation for its Application in the Industrial and Mobility Sectors

Green hydrogen can be efficiently produced in regions rich in renewable sources far from the European largeproduction sites and delivered to the continent for utilization in the industrial and mobility sectors. In this work the transportation of hydrogen from North Africa to North Italy in its liquefied form is considered. A technoeconomic assessment is performed on its value chain which includes liquefaction storage maritime transport distribution regasification and compression. The calculated transport cost for the industrial application (delivery to a hydrogen valley) ranges from 6.14 to 9.16 €/kg while for the mobility application (delivery to refueling stations) the range is 10.96–17.71 €/kg. In the latter case the most cost-effective configuration involves the distribution of liquefied hydrogen and regasification at the refueling stations. The liquefaction process is the cost driver of the value chain in all the investigated cases suggesting the importance of its optimization to minimize the overall transport cost.
Hydrogen Consumption and Durability Assessment of Fuel Cell Vehicles in Realistic Driving

This study proposes a predictive equivalent consumption minimization strategy (P-ECMS) that utilizes velocity prediction and considers various dynamic constraints to mitigate fuel cell degradation assessed using a dedicated sub-model. The objective is to reduce fuel consumption in real-world conditions without prior knowledge of the driving mission. The P-ECMS incorporates a velocity prediction layer into the Energy Management System. Comparative evaluations with a conventional adaptive-ECMS (A-ECMS) a standard ECMS with a well-tuned constant equivalence factor and a rule-based strategy (RBS) are conducted across two driving cycles and three fuel cell dynamic restrictions (|∕| ≤ 0.1 0.01 and 0.001 A∕cm2 ). The proposed strategy achieves H2 consumption reductions ranging from 1.4% to 3.0% compared to A-ECMS and fuel consumption reductions of up to 6.1% when compared to RBS. Increasing dynamic limitations lead to increased H2 consumption and durability by up to 200% for all tested strategies.
A Novel Layout for Combined Heat and Power Production for a Hospital Based on a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

This paper addresses the problem of the reduction in the huge energy demand of hospitals and health care facilities. The sharp increase in the natural gas price due to the Ukrainian–Russian war has significantly reduced economic savings achieved by combined heat and power (CHP) units especially for hospitals. In this framework this research proposes a novel system based on the integration of a reversible CHP solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and a photovoltaic field (PV). The PV power is mainly used for balancing the hospital load. The excess power production is exploited to produce renewable hydrogen. The SOFC operates in electrical tracking mode. The cogenerative heat produced by the SOFC is exploited to partially meet the thermal load of the hospital. The SOFC is driven by the renewable hydrogen produced by the plant. When this hydrogen is not available the SOFC is driven by natural gas. In fact the SOFC is coupled with an external reformer. The simulation model of the whole plant including the reversible SOFC PV and hospital is developed in the TRNSYS18 environment and MATLAB. The model of the hospital is calibrated by means of measured data. The proposed system achieves very interesting results with a primary energy-saving index of 33% and a payback period of 6.7 years. Therefore this energy measure results in a promising solution for reducing the environmental impact of hospital and health care facilities.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Modeling for Power Electronics Control: A Short Review

The main purpose of this article is to provide a short review of proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEMEL) modeling used for power electronics control. So far three types of PEMEL modeling have been adopted in the literature: resistive load static load (including an equivalent resistance series-connected with a DC voltage generator representing the reversible voltage) and dynamic load (taking into consideration the dynamics both at the anode and the cathode). The modeling of the load is crucial for control purposes since it may have an impact on the performance of the system. This article aims at providing essential information and comparing the different load modeling.
Renewable Marine Fuel Production for Decarbonised Maritime Shipping: Pathways, Policy Measures and Transition Dynamics

This article investigates the potential of renewable and low-carbon fuel production for the maritime shipping sector using Sweden as a case in focus. Techno-economic modelling and socio-technical transition studies are combined to explore the conditions opportunities and barriers to decarbonising the maritime shipping industry. A set of scenarios have been developed considering demand assumptions and potential instruments such as carbon price energy tax and blending mandate. The study finds that there are opportunities for decarbonising the maritime shipping industry by using renewable marine fuels such as advanced biofuels (e.g. biomethanol) electrofuels (e.g. e-methanol) and hydrogen. Sweden has tremendous resource potential for bio-based and hydrogen-based renewable liquid fuel production. In the evaluated system boundary biomethanol presents the cheapest technology option while e-ammonia is the most expensive one. Green electricity plays an important role in the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. The results of the supply chain optimisation identify the location sites and technology in Sweden as well as the trade flows to bring the fuels to where the bunker facilities are potentially located. Biomethanol and hydrogen-based marine fuels are cost-effective at a carbon price beyond 100 €/tCO2 and 200 €/tCO2 respectively. Linking back to the socio-technical transition pathways the study finds that some shipping companies are in the process of transitioning towards using renewable marine fuels thereby enabling niche innovations to break through the carbon lock-in and eventually alter the socio-technical regime while other shipping companies are more resistant. Overall there is increasing pressure from (inter)national energy and climate policy-making to decarbonise the maritime shipping industry.
Energy and Environmental Assessment of Hydrogen from Biomass Sources: Challenges and Perspectives

Hydrogen is considered as one of the pillars of the European decarbonisation strategy boosting a novel concept of the energy system in line with the EU’s commitment to achieve clean energy transition and reach the European Green Deal carbon neutrality goals by 2050. Hydrogen from biomass sources can significantly contribute to integrate the renewable hydrogen supply through electrolysis at large-scale production. Specifically it can cover the non-continuous production of green hydrogen coming from solar and wind energy to offer an alternative solution to such industrial sectors necessitating of stable supply. Biomass-derived hydrogen can be produced either from thermochemical pathways (i.e. pyrolysis liquefaction and gasification) or from biological routes (i.e. direct or indirect-biophotolysis biological water–gas shift reaction photo- and dark-fermentation). The paper reviews several production pathways to produce hydrogen from biomass or biomass-derived sources (biogas liquid bio-intermediates sugars) and provides an exhaustive review of the most promising technologies towards commercialisation. While some pathways are still at low technology readiness level others such as the steam bio-methane reforming and biomass gasification are ready for an immediate market uptake. The various production pathways are evaluated in terms of energy and environmental performances highlighting the limits and barriers of the available LCA studies. The paper shows that hydrogen production technologies from biomass appears today to be an interesting option almost ready to constitute a complementing option to electrolysis.
Thermoacoustic Combustion Stability Analysis of a Bluff Body-Stabilized Burner Fueled by Methane–Air and Hydrogen–Air Mixtures

Hydrogen can play a key role in the gradual transition towards a full decarbonization of the combustion sector e.g. in power generation. Despite the advantages related to the use of this carbon-free fuel there are still several challenging technical issues that must be addressed such as the thermoacoustic instability triggered by hydrogen. Given that burners are usually designed to work with methane or other fossil fuels it is important to investigate their thermoacoustic behavior when fueled by hydrogen. In this framework the present work aims to propose a methodology which combines Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD (3D Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)) and Finite Element Method (FEM) approaches in order to investigate the fluid dynamic and the thermoacoustic behavior introduced by hydrogen in a burner (a lab-scale bluff body stabilized burner) designed to work with methane. The case of CH4 -air mixture was used for the validation against experimental results and benchmark CFD data available in the literature. Numerical results obtained from CFD simulations namely thermofluidodynamic properties and flame characteristics (i.e. time delay and heat release rate) are used to evaluate the effects of the fuel change on the Flame Response Function to the acoustic perturbation by means of a FEM approach. As results in the H2 -air mixture case the time delay decreases and heat release rate increases with respect to the CH4 -air mixture. A study on the Rayleigh index was carried out in order to analyze the influence of H2 -air mixture on thermoacoustic instability of the burner. Finally an analysis of both frequency and growth rate (GR) on the first four modes was carried out by comparing the two mixtures. In the H2 -air case the modes are prone to become more unstable with respect to the same modes of the case fueled by CH4 -air due to the change in flame topology and variation of the heat release rate and time delay fields.
Merging the Green-H2 Production with Carbon Recycling for Stepping Towards the Carbon Cyclic Economy

Hydrogen Economy and Cyclic Economy are advocated together with the use of perennial (solar wind hydro geo-power SWHG) and renewable (biomass) energy sources for defossilizing anthropic activities and mitigating climate change. Each option has intrinsic limits that prevent a stand-alone success in reaching the target. Humans have recycled goods (metals water paper and now plastics) to a different extent since very long time. Recycling carbon (which is already performed at the industrial level in the form of CO2 utilization and with recycling paper and plastics) is a key point for the future. The conversion of CO2 into chemicals and materials is carried out since the late 1800s (Solvay process) and is today performed at scale of 230 Mt/y. It is time to implement on a scale of several Gt/y the conversion of CO2 into energy products possibly mimicking Nature which does not use hydrogen. In the short term a few conditions must be met to make operative on a large scale the production of fuels from recycled-C namely the availability of low-cost: i. abundant pure concentrated streams of CO2 ii. non-fossil primary energy sources and iii. non-fossil-hydrogen. The large-scale production of hydrogen by Methane Steam Reforming with CO2 capture (Blue-H2) seems to be a realistic and sustainable solution. Green-H2 could in principle be produced on a large scale through the electrolysis of water powered by perennial primary sources but hurdles such as the availability of materials for the construction of long-living robust electrochemical cells (membranes electrodes) must be abated for a substantial scale-up with respect to existing capacity. The actual political situation makes difficult to rely on external supplies. Supposed that cheap hydrogen will be available its direct use in energy production can be confronted with the indirect use that implies the hydrogenation of CO2 into fuels (E-fuels) an almost ready technology. The two strategies have both pros and cons and can be integrated. E-Fuels can also represent an option for storing the energy of intermittent sources. In the medium-long term the direct co-processing of CO2 and water via co-electrolysis may avoid the production/transport/ use of hydrogen. In the long term coprocessing of CO2 and H2O to fuels via photochemical or photoelectrochemical processes can become a strategic technology.
Monitored Data and Social Perceptions Analysis of Battery Electric and Hydrogen Fuelled Buses in Urban and Suburban Areas

Electrification of the transportation sector is one of the main drivers in the decarbonization of energy and mobility systems and it is a way to ensure security of energy supply. Public bus fleets can assist in achieving fast reduction of CO2 emissions. This article provides an analysis of a unique real-world dataset to support decision makers in the decarbonization of public fleets and interlink it with the social acceptance of drivers. Data was collected from 21 fuel cell and electric buses. The tank-to-wheel efficiency results of fuel cell electric buses (FCEB) are much lower than that of battery electric buses (BEB) and there is a higher variation in consumption for BEBs compared to FCEBs. Both technologies permit a strong reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional buses. There is a high level of acceptance of drivers which are likely to support the transition towards zero-emission buses introduced by the management.
Sustainable Fuel Production Using In-situ Hydrogen Supply via Aqueous Phase Reforming: A Techno-economic and Life-cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions Assessment

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production is one of the strategies to guarantee an environmental-friendly development of the aviation sector. This work evaluates the technical economic and environmental feasibility of obtaining SAFs by hydrogenation of vegetable oils thanks to in-situ hydrogen production via aqueous phase reforming (APR) of glycerol by-product. The novel implementation of APR would avoid the environmental burden of conventional fossil-derived hydrogen production as well as intermittency and storage issues related to the use of RES-based (renewable energy sources) electrolysers. The conceptual design of a conventional and advanced (APR-aided) biorefinery was performed considering a standard plant capacity equal to 180 ktonne/y of palm oil. For the advanced scenario the feed underwent hydrolysis into glycerol and fatty acids; hence the former was subjected to APR to provide hydrogen which was further used in the hydrotreatment reactor where the fatty acids were deoxygenated. The techno-economic results showed that APR implementation led to a slight increase of the fixed capital investment by 6.6% compared to the conventional one while direct manufacturing costs decreased by 22%. In order to get a 10% internal rate of return the minimum fuel selling price was found equal to 1.84 $/kg which is 17% lower than the one derived from conventional configurations (2.20 $/kg). The life-cycle GHG emission assessment showed that the carbon footprint of the advanced scenario was equal to ca. 12 g CO2/MJSAF i.e. 54% lower than the conventional one (considering an energy-based allocation). The sensitivity analysis pointed out that the cost of the feedstock SAF yield and the chosen plant size are keys parameters for the marketability of this biorefinery while the energy price has a negligible impact; moreover the source of hydrogen has significant consequences on the environmental footprint of the plant. Finally possible uncertainties for both scenarios were undertaken via Monte Carlo simulations.
The Economic Impact and Carbon Footprint Dependence of Energy Management Strategies in Hydrogen-Based Microgrids

This paper presents an economic impact analysis and carbon footprint study of a hydrogenbased microgrid. The economic impact is evaluated with respect to investment costs operation and maintenance (O&M) costs as well as savings taking into account two different energy management strategies (EMSs): a hydrogen-based priority strategy and a battery-based priority strategy. The research was carried out in a real microgrid located at the University of Huelva in southwestern Spain. The results (which can be extrapolated to microgrids with a similar architecture) show that although both strategies have the same initial investment costs (EUR 52339.78) at the end of the microgrid lifespan the hydrogen-based strategy requires higher replacement costs (EUR 74177.4 vs. 17537.88) and operation and maintenance costs (EUR 35254.03 vs. 34877.08) however it provides better annual savings (EUR 36753.05 vs. 36282.58) and a lower carbon footprint (98.15% vs. 95.73% CO2 savings) than the battery-based strategy. Furthermore in a scenario where CO2 emission prices are increasing the hydrogen-based strategy will bring even higher annual cost savings in the coming years.
Analysis of a Distributed Green Hydrogen Infrastructure Designed to Support the Sustainable Mobility of a Heavy-duty Fleet

Clean hydrogen is a key pillar for the net zero economy which can be deployed by consistent utilization on heavy-duty transport. This study investigates a distributed green hydrogen infrastructure (DHI) for heavy-duty transportation consisting of on-site hydrogen production storage compression and refueling systems in Italy. Two options for energy supply are analyzed: grid connection using green energy via Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs) and direct connection to the photovoltaic field respectively. Radiation data are representative of the three main Italian areas namely South (Catania) Center (Roma) and North (Milano). The sensitivity analysis varies the PPA value between 50 V/MWh and 200 V/MWh and the water electrolysis capacity factor between 20% and 100%. The study finds that the LCOH ranges from 7.4 V/kgH2 to 67.8 V/kgH2 for the first option and 5.5 V/kgH2 to 27.5 V/kgH2 for the second option with Southern Italy having the lowest LCOH due to higher solar irradiation. The research shows that a DHI can offer economic and technical benefits for heavy-duty mobility. However the performance is highly influenced by external conditions such as hydrogen demand and electricity prices. This study provides valuable insights into designing and operating a DHI for heavy-duty mobility promoting a carbon-free society.

Optimal RES Integration for Matching the Italian Hydrogen Strategy Requirements

In light of the Italian Hydrogen Roadmap goals the 2030 national RES installation targets need to be redefined. This work aims to propose a more appropriate RES installation deployment on national scale by matching the electrolysers capacity and the green hydrogen production goals. The adopted approach envisages the power-to-gas value chain priority for the green hydrogen production as a means of balancing system. Thus the 2030 Italian energy system has been modelled and several RES installation scenarios have been simulated via EnergyPLAN software. The simulation outputs have been integrated with a breakdown model for the overgeneration RES share detection in compliance with the PV dispatching priority of the Italian system. Therefore the best installation solutions have been detected via multi-objective optimization model based on the green hydrogen production additional installation cost critical energy excess along with the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). Higher wind technology installations provide more competitive energy and hydrogen costs. The most suitable scenarios show that the optimal LCOH and hydrogen production values respectively equal to 3.6 €/kg and 223 ktonH2 arise from additional PV/wind installations of 35 GW on top of the national targets.
A Review of Electrolyzer-based Systems Providing Grid Ancillary Service: Current Status, Market, Challenges and Future Directions

Concerns related to climate change have shifted global attention towards advanced sustainable and decarbonized energy systems. While renewable resources such as wind and solar energy offer environmentally friendly alternatives their inherent variability and intermittency present significant challenges to grid stability and reliability. The integration of renewable energy sources requires innovative solutions to effectively balance supply and demand in the electricity grid. This review explores the critical role of electrolyzer systems in addressing these challenges by providing ancillary services to modern electricity grids. Electrolyzers traditionally used only for hydrogen production have now emerged as versatile tools capable of responding quickly to grid load variations. They can consume electricity during excess periods or when integrated with fuel cells generate electricity during peak demand contributing to grid stability. Therefore electrolyzer systems can fulfill the dual function of producing hydrogen for the end-user and offering grid balancing services ensuring greater economic feasibility. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive view of the electrolyzer systems’ role in the provision of ancillary services including frequency control voltage control congestion management and black start. The technical aspects market projects challenges and future prospects of using electrolyzers to provide ancillary services in modern energy systems are explored.
Hydrogen Combustion: Features and Barriers to Its Exploitation in the Energy Transition

The aim of this article is to review hydrogen combustion applications within the energy transition framework. Hydrogen blends are also included from the well-known hydrogen enriched natural gas (HENG) to the hydrogen and ammonia blends whose chemical kinetics is still not clearly defined. Hydrogen and hydrogen blends combustion characteristics will be firstly summarized in terms of standard properties like the laminar flame speed and the adiabatic flame temperature but also evidencing the critical role of hydrogen preferential diffusion in burning rate enhancement and the drastic reduction in radiative emission with respect to natural gas flames. Then combustion applications in both thermo-electric power generation (based on internal combustion engines i.e. gas turbines and piston engines) and hard-to-abate industry (requiring high-temperature kilns and furnaces) sectors will be considered highlighting the main issues due to hydrogen addition related to safety pollutant emissions and potentially negative effects on industrial products (e.g. glass cement and ceramic).
Hazard Footprint of Alternative Fuel Storage Concepts for Hydrogen-powered Urban Buses

Hydrogen mobility is a powerful strategy to fight climate change promoting the decarbonization of the transportation sector. However the higher flammability of hydrogen in comparison with traditional fuels raises issues concerning the safety of hydrogen-powered vehicles in particular when urban mobility in crowded areas is concerned. In the present study a comparative analysis of alternative hydrogen storage concepts for buses is carried out. A specific inherent safety assessment methodology providing a hazard footprint of alternative hydrogen storage technologies was developed. The approach provides a set of ex-ante safety performance indicators and integrates a sensitivity analysis performed by a Monte Carlo method. Integral models for consequence analysis and a set of baseline frequencies are used to provide a preliminary identification of the worstcase credible fire and explosion scenarios and to rank the inherent safety of alternative concepts. Cryocompressed storage in the supercritical phase resulted as the more hazardous storage concept while cryogenic storage in the liquid phase at ambient pressure scored the highest safety performance. The results obtained support risk-informed decision-making in the shift towards the promotion of sustainable mobility in urban areas.
Flashback Propensity due to Hydrogen Blending in Natural Gas: Sensitivity to Operating and Geometrical Parameters

Hydrogen has emerged as a promising option for promoting decarbonization in various sectors by serving as a replacement for natural gas while retaining the combustion-based conversion system. However its higher reactivity compared to natural gas introduces a significant risk of flashback. This study investigates the impact of operating and geometry parameters on flashback phenomena in multi-slit burners fed with hydrogenmethane-air mixtures. For this purpose transient numerical simulations which take into account conjugate heat transfer between the fluid and the solid walls are coupled with stochastic sensitivity analysis based on Generalized Polynomial Chaos. This allows deriving comprehensive maps of flashback velocities and burner temperatures within the parameter space of hydrogen content equivalence ratio and slit width using a limited number of numerical simulations. Moreover we assess the influence of different parameters and their interactions on flashback propensity. The ranges we investigate encompass highly H2 -enriched lean mixtures ranging from 80% to 100% H2 by volume with equivalence ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.0. We also consider slit widths that are typically encountered in burners for end-user devices ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm. The study highlights the dominant role of preferential diffusion in affecting flashback physics and propensity as parameters vary including significant enrichment close to the burner plate due to the Soret effect. These findings hold promise for driving the design and optimization of perforated burners enabling their safe and efficient operation in practical end-user applications.
Addressing Environmental Challenges: The Role of Hydrogen Technologies in a Sustainable Future

Energy and environmental issues are of great importance in the present era. The transition to renewable energy sources necessitates technological political and behavioral transformations. Hydrogen is a promising solution and many countries are investing in the hydrogen economy. Global demand for hydrogen is expected to reach 120 million tonnes by 2024. The incorporation of hydrogen for efficient energy transport and storage and its integration into the transport sector are crucial measures. However to fully develop a hydrogen-based economy the sustainability and safety of hydrogen in all its applications must be ensured. This work describes and compares different technologies for hydrogen production storage and utilization (especially in fuel cell applications) with focus on the research activities under study at SaRAH group of the University of Naples Federico II. More precisely the focus is on the production of hydrogen from bio-alcohols and its storage in formate solutions produced from renewable sources such as biomass or carbon dioxide. In addition the use of materials inspired by nature including biowaste as feedstock to produce porous electrodes for fuel cell applications is presented. We hope that this review can be useful to stimulate more focused and fruitful research in this area and that it can open new avenues for the development of sustainable hydrogen technologies.
Assessing Techno-economic Feasibility of Cogeneration and Power to Hydrogen Plants: A Novel Dynamic Simulation Model

Green hydrogen technologies are crucial for decarbonization purposes while cogeneration offers efficient heat and power generation. Integrating green hydrogen and cogeneration brings numerous benefits optimizing energy utilization reducing emissions and supporting the transition to a sustainable future. While there are numerous studies examining the integration of combined heat and power with Power to Gas certain aspects still requires a more detailed analysis especially for internal combustion engines fuelled by natural gas due to their widespread adoption as one of the primary technologies in use. Therefore this paper presents a comprehensive numerical 0-D dynamic simulation model implemented within the TRNSYS environment considering internal combustion engines fuelled by natural gas. Specifically the study focuses on capturing CO2 from exhaust gases and producing green hydrogen from electrolysis. Based on these considerations two configurations are proposed: the first involves the methanation reaction while the second entails the production of a hydromethane mixture. The aim is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of these configurations and compare their performance within the Power to Gas framework. Self-sufficiency from the national electricity grid has been almost achieved for the two configurations considering an industrial case. The production of hydromethane allows smaller photovoltaic plant (81 kWp) compared to the production of synthetic methane (670 kWp) where a high quantity of hydrogen is required especially if all the carbon dioxide captured is used in the methanation process. Encouraging economic results with payback times below ten years have been obtained with the use of hydromethane. Moreover hydromethane shows potential residential applications with small required photovoltaic sizes.
Assessing Opportunities and Weaknesses of Green Hydrogen Transport via LOHC through a Detailed Techno-economic Analysis

In the transition towards a more sustainable energy system hydrogen is seen as the key low-emission energy source. However the limited H2 volumetric density hinders its transportation. To overcome this issue liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) molecules that can be hydrogenated and upon arrival dehydrogenated for H2 release have been proposed as hydrogen transport media. Considering toluene and dibenzyltoluene as representative carriers this work offers a systematic methodology for the analysis and the comparison of LOHCs in view of identifying cost-drivers of the overall value-chain. A detailed Aspen Plus process simulation is provided for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation sections. Simulation results are used as input data for the economic assessment. The process economics reveals that dehydrogenation is the most impactful cost-item together with the carrier initial loading the latter related to the LOHC transport distance. The choice of the most suitable molecule as H2 carrier ultimately is a trade-off between its hydrogenation enthalpy and cost.
Numerical Analysis of Dual Fuel Combustion in a Medium Speed Marine Engine Supplied with Methane/Hydrogen Blends

Compression ignition engines will still be predominant in the naval sector: their high efficiency high torque and heavy weight perfectly suit the demands and architecture of ships. Nevertheless recent emission legislations impose limitations to the pollutant emissions levels in this sector as well. In addition to post-treatment systems it is necessary to reduce some pollutant species and therefore the study of combustion strategies and new fuels can represent valid paths for limiting environmental harmful emissions such as CO2 . The use of methane in dual fuel mode has already been implemented on existent vessels but the progressive decarbonization will lead to the utilization of carbon-neutral or carbon-free fuels such as in the last case hydrogen. Thanks to its high reactivity nature it can be helpful in the reduction of exhaust CH4 . On the contrary together with the high temperatures achieved by its oxidation hydrogen could cause uncontrolled ignition of the premixed charge and high emissions of NOx. As a matter of fact a source of ignition is still necessary to have better control on the whole combustion development. To this end an optimal and specific injection strategy can help to overcome all the before-mentioned issues. In this study three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed with the ANSYS Forte® software (version 19.2) in an 8.8 L dual fuel engine cylinder supplied with methane hydrogen or hydrogen–methane blends with reference to experimental tests from the literature. A new kinetic mechanism has been used for the description of diesel fuel surrogate oxidation with a set of reactions specifically addressed for the low temperatures together with the GRIMECH 3.0 for CH4 and H2 . This kinetics scheme allowed for the adequate reproduction of the ignition timing for the various mixtures used. Preliminary calculations with a one-dimensional commercial code were performed to retrieve the initial conditions of CFD calculations in the cylinder. The used approach demonstrated to be quite a reliable tool to predict the performance of a marine engine working under dual fuel mode with hydrogen-based blends at medium load. As a result the system modelling shows that using hydrogen as fuel in the engine can achieve the same performance as diesel/natural gas but when hydrogen totally replaces methane CO2 is decreased up to 54% at the expense of the increase of about 76% of NOx emissions.
Dynamic Quality Tracking of Natural Gas and Hydrogen Mixture in a Portion of Natural Gas Grid

Direct injection of alternative fuels (biomethane hydrogen) in the natural gas grid appears to be a promising solution to reach environmental objectives of CO2 emission reduction in the current energy scenario. This approach is justified by the large amount of biogas producible which can be upgraded to biomethane; while another proposed solution to increase renewable energy sources exploitation lies in producing hydrogen from excess wind energy followed by injection in the natural gas grid. Nevertheless compliance with composition limits and quality constraints in the resulting natural gas mixture has to be analysed in both stationary and dynamic operations tracking the gas quality downstream the injection point of the alternative fuels. A model was developed to simulate unsteady operation of a portion of gas grid dealing with realistic industrial and residential consumptions concentrated in offtake points. Two case studies were investigated focusing on the comparison between different amounts of hydrogen injection in the pure natural gas flow yielding composition flow rate and pressure profiles. The analysis shows how imposed quality thresholds can be respected although the hydrogen fraction within the natural gas mixture is highly sensitive to the profile and size of the loads connected to the gas pipeline.
Ammonia as Green Fuel in Internal Combustion Engines: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives

Ammonia (NH3) is among the largest-volume chemicals produced and distributed in the world and is mainly known for its use as a fertilizer in the agricultural sector. In recent years it has sparked interest in the possibility of working as a high-quality energy carrier and as a carbon-free fuel in internal combustion engines (ICEs). This review aimed to provide an overview of the research on the use of green ammonia as an alternative fuel for ICEs with a look to the future on possible applications and practical solutions to related problems. First of all the ammonia production process is discussed. Present ammonia production is not a “green” process; the synthesis occurs starting from gaseous hydrogen currently produced from hydrocarbons. Some ways to produce green ammonia are reviewed and discussed. Then the chemical and physical properties of ammonia as a fuel are described and explained in order to identify the main pros and cons of its use in combustion systems. Then the most viable solutions for fueling internal combustion engines with ammonia are discussed. When using pure ammonia high boost pressure and compression ratio are required to compensate for the low ammonia flame speed. In spark-ignition engines adding hydrogen to ammonia helps in speeding up the flame front propagation and stabilizing the combustion. In compression-ignition engines ammonia can be successfully used in dual-fuel mode with diesel. On the contrary an increase in NOx and the unburned NH3 at the exhaust require the installation of apposite aftertreatment systems. Therefore the use of ammonia seems to be more practicable for marine or stationary engine application where space constraints are not a problem. In conclusion this review points out that ammonia has excellent potential to play a significant role as a sustainable fuel for the future in both retrofitted and new engines. However significant further research and development activities are required before being able to consider large-scale industrial production of green ammonia. Moreover uncertainties remain about ammonia safe and effective use and some technical issues need to be addressed to overcome poor combustion properties for utilization as a direct substitute for standard fuels.
Modelling Methodologies to Design and Control Renewables and Hydrogen-Based Telecom Towers Power Supply Systems

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFCS) and electrolyser (PEMELS) systems together with a hydrogen storage tank (HST) are suitable to be integrated with renewable microgrids to cover intermittency and fully exploit the excess of electrical energy. Such an integration perfectly fits telecom tower power supply needs both in off-grid and grid-connected sites. In this framework a model-based tool enabling both optimal sizing and proper year-through energy management of both the above applications is proposed. Respectively the islanded optimisation is performed considering two economic indices i.e. simple payback (SPB) and levelised cost of energy (LCOE) together with two strategies of hydrogen tank management charge sustaining and depleting and also accounting for the impact of grid extension distance. On the other hand the grid connection is addressed through the dynamic programming method while downsizing PEMELS and HST sizes to improve techno-economic effectiveness thanks to grid contribution towards renewables curtailment issues mitigation. For both the above introduced HST management strategies a reduction of more than 70% of the nominal PEMELS power and 90% of the HST size which will in turn lead to SPB and LCOE being reduced by 80% and 60% in comparison to the islanded case respectively is achieved. Furthermore the charge depleting strategy relying on possible hydrogen purchase interestingly provides an SPB and LCOE of 9% and 7% lower than the charge sustaining one.
China and Italy’s Energy Development Trajectories: Current Landscapes and Future Cooperation Potential

Against this background this paper takes China and Italy as representatives of developing and developed countries to summarize the energy structure composition and development overview of the two countries. The paper analyzes the serious challenges facing the future energy development of both countries and investigates the possibilities of energy cooperation between the two countries taking into account their respective advantages in energy development. By comparing the policies issued by the two governments to encourage clean energy development this paper analyzes the severe challenges faced by the two countries’ energy development in the future and combines their respective energy development advantages to look forward to the possibility of energy cooperation between the two countries in the future. This lays the foundation for China and Italy to build an “Energy Road” after the “Silk Road”.
Modeling the Long-term Evolution of the Italian Power Sector: The Role of Renewable Resources and Energy Storage Facilities

The aim of this study is to investigate the long-term planning of the Italian power sector from 2021 to 2050. The key role of photovoltaic and wind technologies in combination with power-to-power systems based on hydrogen and batteries is investigated. An updated version of the OSeMOSYS tool is used which employs a clustering method for the representation of time-varying input data. First the potential of variable renewable energy sources (VRES) is assessed. A sensitivity analysis is also performed on the temporal resolution of the model to determine an adequate trade-off between the computation time and the accuracy of the results. Then a technoeconomic optimization scenario is carried out resulting in a total net present cost of about 233.7 B€. A high penetration of VRES technologies is foreseen by 2050 with a total VRES installed capacity of 272.9 GW (mainly photovoltaic and onshore wind). Batteries are found to be the preferable energy storage solution in the first part of the energy transition while the hydrogen storage starts to be convenient from about the year 2040. Indeed the role of hydrogen storage becomes fundamental as the VRES penetration increases thanks to its cost-effective long-term storage capability. By 2050 74.6 % of electricity generation will be based on VRES which will also enable a significant reduction in CO2 emissions of about 87 %.
Experimental Comparison of Hydrogen Refueling with Directly Pressurized vs. Cascade Method

This paper presents a comparative analysis of two hydrogen station configurations during the refueling process: the conventional “directly pressurized refueling process” and the innovative “cascade refueling process.” The objective of the cascade process is to refuel vehicles without the need for booster compressors. The experiments were conducted at the Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility located at California State University Los Angeles. In the cascade refueling process the facility buffer tanks were utilized as high-pressure storage enabling the refueling operation. Three different scenarios were tested: one involving the cascade refueling process and two involving compressor-driven refueling processes. On average each refueling event delivered 1.6 kg of hydrogen. Although the cascade refueling process using the high-pressure buffer tanks did not achieve the pressure target it resulted in a notable improvement in the nozzle outlet temperature trend reducing it by approximately 8 ◦C. Moreover the overall hydrogen chiller load for the two directly pressurized refuelings was 66 Wh/kg and 62 Wh/kg respectively whereas the cascading process only required 55 Wh/kg. This represents a 20% and 12% reduction in energy consumption compared to the scenarios involving booster compressors during fueling. The observed refueling range of 150–350 bar showed that the cascade process consistently required 12–20% less energy for hydrogen chilling. Additionally the nozzle outlet temperature demonstrated an approximate 8 ◦C improvement within this pressure range. These findings indicate that further improvements can be expected in the high-pressure region specifically above 350 bar. This research suggests the potential for significant improvements in the high-pressure range emphasizing the viability of the cascade refueling process as a promising alternative to the direct compression approach.
Toward Green Steel: Modelling and Environmental Economic Analysis of Iron Direct Reduction with Different Reducing Gases

The objective of the paper is to simulate the whole steelmaking process cycle based on Direct Reduced Iron and Electric Arc Furnace technologies by modeling for the first time the reduction furnace based on kinetic approach to be used as a basis for the environmental and techno-economic plant analysis by adopting different reducing gases. In addition the impact of carbon capture section is discussed. A complete profitability analysis has been conducted for the first time adopting a Monte Carlo simulation approach.<br/>In detail the use of syngas from methane reforming syngas and hydrogen from gasification of municipal solid waste and green hydrogen from water electrolysis are analyzed. The results show that the Direct Reduced Iron process with methane can reduce CO2 emissions by more than half compared to the blast furnace based-cycle and with the adoption of carbon capture greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by an additional 40%. The use of carbon capture by amine scrubbing has a limited economic disadvantage compared to the scenario without it becoming profitable once carbon tax is included in the analysis. However it is with the use of green hydrogen from electrolyzer that greenhouse gas emissions can be cut down almost completely. To have an environmental benefit compared with the methane-based Direct Reduced Iron process the green hydrogen plant must operate for at least 5136 h per year (64.2% of the plant's annual operating hours) on renewable energy.<br/>In addition the use of syngas and separated hydrogen from municipal solid waste gasification is evaluated demonstrating its possible use with no negative effects on the quality of produced steel. The results show that hydrogen use from waste gasification is more economic with respect to green hydrogen from electrolysis but from the environmental viewpoint the latter results the best alternative. Comparing the use of hydrogen and syngas from waste gasification it can be stated that the use of the former reducing gas results preferable from both the economic and environmental viewpoint.
A Complete Assessment of the Emission Performance of an SI Engine Fueled with Methanol, Methane and Hydrogen

This study explores the potentiality of low/zero carbon fuels such as methanol methane and hydrogen for motor applications to pursue the goal of energy security and environmental sustainability. An experimental investigation was performed on a spark ignition engine equipped with both a port fuel and a direct injection system. Liquid fuels were injected into the intake manifold to benefit from a homogeneous charge formation. Gaseous fuels were injected in direct mode to enhance the efficiency and prevent abnormal combustion. Tests were realized at a fixed indicated mean effective pressure and at three different engine speeds. The experimental results highlighted the reduction of CO and CO2 emissions for the alternative fuels to an extent depending on their properties. Methanol exhibited high THC and low NOx emissions compared to gasoline. Methane and even more so hydrogen allowed for a reduction in THC emissions. With regard to the impact of gaseous fuels on the NOx emissions this was strongly related to the operating conditions. A surprising result concerns the particle emissions that were affected not only by the fuel characteristics and the engine test point but also by the lubricating oil. The oil contribution was particularly evident for hydrogen fuel which showed high particle emissions although they did not contain carbon atoms.
A New Generation of Hydrogen-Fueled Hybrid Propulsion Systems for the Urban Mobility of the Future

The H2-ICE project aims at developing through numerical simulation a new generation of hybrid powertrains featuring a hydrogen-fueled Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) suitable for 12 m urban buses in order to provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for the abatement of both CO2 and criteria pollutant emissions. The full exploitation of the potential of such a traction system requires a substantial enhancement of the state of the art since several issues have to be addressed. In particular the choice of a more suitable fuel injection system and the control of the combustion process are extremely challenging. Firstly a high-fidelity 3D-CFD model will be exploited to analyze the in-cylinder H2 fuel injection through supersonic flows. Then after the optimization of the injection and combustion process a 1D model of the whole engine system will be built and calibrated allowing the identification of a “sweet spot” in the ultra-lean combustion region characterized by extremely low NOx emissions and at the same time high combustion efficiencies. Moreover to further enhance the engine efficiency well above 40% different Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) systems will be carefully scrutinized including both Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based recovery units as well as electric turbo-compounding. A Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system will be developed to further reduce NOx emissions to near-zero levels. Finally a dedicated torque-based control strategy for the ICE coupled with the Energy Management Systems (EMSs) of the hybrid powertrain both optimized by exploiting Vehicle-To-Everything (V2X) connection allows targeting H2 consumption of 0.1 kg/km. Technologies developed in the H2-ICE project will enhance the know-how necessary to design and build engines and aftertreatment systems for the efficient exploitation of H2 as a fuel as well as for their integration into hybrid powertrains.
Eco-Sustainable Energy Production in Healthcare: Trends and Challenges in Renewable Energy Systems

The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems represents a pivotal step toward the realization of a sustainable society. This study aims to analyze representative scientific literature on eco-sustainable energy production in the healthcare sector particularly in hospitals. Given hospitals’ substantial electricity consumption the adoption of renewable energy offers a reliable low-CO2 emission solution. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency for energyefficient and environmentally-responsible approaches. This brief review analyzes the development of experimental simulation and optimization projects for sustainable energy production in healthcare facilities. The analysis reveals trends and challenges in renewable energy systems offering valuable insights into the potential of eco-sustainable solutions in the healthcare sector. The findings indicate that hydrogen storage systems are consistently coupled with photovoltaic panels or solar collectors but only 14% of the analyzed studies explore this potential within hospital settings. Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) could be used to meet the energy demands of healthcare centers and hospitals. However the integration of HRES in hospitals and medical buildings is understudied.
Thermal Design and Heat Transfer Optimisation of a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier Batch Reactor for Hydrogen Storage

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are considered a promising hydrogen storage technology. Heat must be exchanged with an external medium such as a heat transfer fluid for the required chemical reactions to occur. Batch reactors are simple but useful solutions for small-scale storage applications which can be modelled with a lumped parameter approach adequately reproducing their dynamic performance. For such reactors power is consumed to circulate the external heat transfer fluid and stir the organic liquid inside the reactor and heat transfer performance and power consumption are two key parameters in reactor optimisation. Therefore with reference to the hydrogen release phase this paper describes a procedure to optimise the reactor thermal design based on a lumped-parameter model in terms of heat transfer performance and minimum power consumption. Two batch reactors are analysed: a conventional jacketed reactor with agitation nozzles and a half-pipe coil reactor. Heat transfer performance is evaluated by introducing a newly defined dimensionless parameter the Heat Transfer Ratio (HTR) whose value directly correlates to the heat rate required by the carrier's dehydrogenation reaction. The resulting model is a valid tool for adequately reproducing the hydrogen storage behaviour within dynamic models of complex and detailed energy systems.
The Use of Hydrogen as Alternative Fuel for Ship Propulsion: A Case Study of Full and Partial Retrofitting of Roll-on/Roll-off Vessels for Short Distance Routes

Roll-on/Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) vessels including those without and with passenger accommodation Roll-on/roll-off passenger (Ro-Pax) can be totally or partially retrofitted to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in maritime transport not only during hoteling operation at the dock but also during service. This study is based on data of the vessel routes connecting the Port of Piombino to the Elba Island in Italy. Three retrofitting scenarios have been considered: replacement of the main and auxiliary engines with fuel cells (FC) (full retrofitting) replacement of the auxiliary engines with FCs (partial retrofitting) and replacement of the auxiliary engines with FCs and hoteling only with auxiliary engines for one specific vessel. The amount of hydrogen the filling time and the energy needed for production compression and pre-cooling of hydrogen have been calculated for the different scenarios.
Energy Transition Technology Comes With New Process Safety Challenges and Risks

This paper intends to give an impression of new technologies and processes that are in development for application to achieve decarbonization and about which less or no experience on associated hazards exists in the process industry. More or less an exception is hydrogen technology because its hazards are relatively known and there is industry experience in handling it safely but problems will arise when it is produced stored and distributed on a large scale. So when its use spreads to communities and it becomes as common as natural gas now measures to control the risks will be needed. And even with hydrogen surprise findings have been shown lately e.g. its BLEVE behavior when in a liquified form stored in a vessel heated externally. Substitutes for hydrogen are not without hazard concern either. The paper will further consider the hazards of energy storage in batteries and the problems to get those hazards under control. Relatively much attention will be paid to the electrification of the process industry. Many new processes are being researched which given green energy will be beneficial to reduce greenhouse gases and enhance sustainability but of which hazards are rather unknown. Therefore as last chapter the developments with respect to the concept of hazard identification and scenario definition will be considered in quite detail. Improvements in that respect are also being possible due to the digitization of the industry and the availability of data and considering the entire life cycle all facilitated by the data model standard ISO 15926 with the scope of integration of life-cycle data for process plants including oil and gas production facilities. Conclusion is that the new technologies and processes entail new process and personal hazards and that much effort is going into renewal but safety analyses are scarce. Right in a period of process renewal attention should be focused on possibilities to implement inherently safer design.
Suitability and Energy Sustainability of Atmospheric Water Generation Technology for Green Hydrogen Production

This research investigated the suitability of air-to-water generator (AWG) technology to address one of the main concerns in green hydrogen production namely water supply. This study specifically addresses water quality and energy sustainability issues which are crucial research questions when AWG technology is intended for electrolysis. To this scope a reasoned summary of the main findings related to atmospheric water quality has been provided. Moreover several experimental chemical analyses specifically focused on meeting electrolysis process requirements on water produced using a real integrated AWG system equipped with certified materials for food contact were discussed. To assess the energy sustainability of AWGs in green hydrogen production a case study was presented regarding an electrolyzer plant intended to serve as energy storage for a 2 MW photovoltaic field on Iriomote Island. The integrated AWG used for the water quality analyses was studied in order to determine its performance in the specific island climate conditions. The production exceeded the needs of the electrolyzer; thus the overproduction was considered for the panels cleaning due to the high purity of the water. Due to such an operation the efficiency recovery was more than enough to cover the AWG energy consumption. This paper on the basis of the quantity results provides the first answers to the said research questions concerning water quality and energy consumption establishing the potential of AWG as a viable solution for addressing water scarcity and enhancing the sustainability of electrolysis processes in green hydrogen production.
A Short Review on Ni Based Catalysts and Related Engineering Issues for Methane Steam Reforming

Hydrogen is an important raw material in chemical industries and the steam reforming of light hydrocarbons (such as methane) is the most used process for its production. In this process the use of a catalyst is mandatory and if compared to precious metal-based catalysts Ni-based catalysts assure an acceptable high activity and a lower cost. The aim of a distributed hydrogen production for example through an on-site type hydrogen station is only reachable if a novel reforming system is developed with some unique properties that are not present in the large-scale reforming system. These properties include among the others (i) daily startup and shutdown (DSS) operation ability (ii) rapid response to load fluctuation (iii) compactness of device and (iv) excellent thermal exchange. In this sense the catalyst has an important role. There is vast amount of information in the literature regarding the performance of catalysts in methane steam reforming. In this short review an overview on the most recent advances in Ni based catalysts for methane steam reforming is given also regarding the use of innovative structured catalysts.
3E Analysis of a Virtual Hydrogen Valley Supported by Railway-based H2 Delivery for Multi-transportation Service

In Southern Italy near the Mediterranean Sea mobility services like cars bicycles scooters and materialhandling forklifts are frequently required in addition to multimodal local transportation services such as trains ferry boats and airplanes. This research proposes an innovative concept of hydrogen valley virtually simulated in Matlab/Simulink environment located in Calabria. As a novelty hydrogen is produced centrally and delivered via fuel cell hybrid trains to seven hydrogen refueling stations serving various mobility hubs. The centralized production facility operates with a nominal capacity of about 4 tons/day producing hydrogen via PEM electrolysis and storing hydrogen at 200 bar with a hydrogen compressor. As the size of vehicle fleets and the cost of acquiring renewable energy through power purchase agreements vary the hydrogen valley is examined from both a technical and an economic perspective analyzing: the values of the levelized cost of hydrogen the energy consumption and the energy efficiency of the energy systems. Specifically the levelized cost of hydrogen reached competitive values close to 5 €/kg of hydrogen under the most optimistic scenarios with fleet conversions of more than 60 % and a power purchase agreement price lower than 150 €/MWh. Then the benefits of hydrogen rail transport in terms of emissions reduction and health from an economic standpoint are compared to conventional diesel trains and fully electric trains saving respectively 3.2 ktons/year and 0.4 ktons/year of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions and corresponding economic benefits of respectively 51 and 0.548 million euros.
The Potential of Hydrogen-battery Storage Systems for a Sustainable Renewable-based Electrification of Remote Islands in Norway

Remote locations and off-grid regions still rely mainly on diesel generators despite the high operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The exploitation of local renewable energy sources (RES) in combination with energy storage technologies can be a promising solution for the sustainable electrification of these areas. The aim of this work is to investigate the potential for decarbonizing remote islands in Norway by installing RES-based energy systems with hydrogen-battery storage. A national scale assessment is presented: first Norwegian islands are characterized and classified according to geographical location number of inhabitants key services and current electrification system. Then 138 suitable installation sites are pinpointed through a multiple-step sorting procedure and finally 10 reference islands are identified as representative case studies. A site-specific methodology is applied to estimate the electrical load profiles of all the selected reference islands. An optimization framework is then developed to determine the optimal system configuration that minimizes the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) while ensuring a reliable 100% renewable power supply. The LCOE of the RES-based energy systems range from 0.21 to 0.63 €/kWh and a clear linear correlation with the wind farm capacity factor is observed (R2 equal to 0.87). Hydrogen is found to be crucial to prevent the oversizing of the RES generators and batteries and ensure long-term storage capacity. The techno-economic feasibility of alternative electrification strategies is also investigated: the use of diesel generators is not economically viable (0.87–1.04 €/kWh) while the profitability of submarine cable connections is highly dependent on the cable length and the annual electricity consumption (0.14–1.47 €/kWh). Overall the cost-effectiveness of RES-based energy systems for off-grid locations in Northern Europe can be easily assessed using the correlations derived in this analysis.
Performance Analysis of a Diabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage System Fueled with Green Hydrogen

The integration of an increasing share of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) requires the availability of suitable energy storage systems to improve the grid flexibility and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) systems could be a promising option. In this study a CO2 -free Diabatic CAES system is proposed and analyzed. The plant configuration is derived from a down-scaled version of the McIntosh Diabatic CAES plant where the natural gas is replaced with green hydrogen produced on site by a Proton Exchange Membrane electrolyzer powered by a photovoltaic power plant. In this study the components of the hydrogen production system are sized to maximize the self-consumption share of PV energy generation and the effect of the design parameters on the H2 -CAES plant performance are analyzed on a yearly basis. Moreover a comparison between the use of natural gas and hydrogen in terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions is discussed. The results show that the proposed hydrogen fueled CAES can effectively match the generation profile and the yearly production of the natural gas fueled plant by using all the PV energy production while producing zero CO2 emissions.
Enhancing Waste-to-Energy and Hydrogen Production through Urban–Industrial Symbiosis: A Multi-Objective Optimisation Model Incorporating a Bayesian Best-Worst Method

A surging demand for sustainable energy and the urgency to lower greenhouse gas emissions is driving industrial systems towards more eco-friendly and cost-effective models. Biogas from agricultural and municipal organic waste is gaining momentum as a renewable energy source. Concurrently the European Hydrogen Strategy focuses on green hydrogen for decarbonising the industrial and transportation sectors. This paper presents a multi-objective network design model for urban–industrial symbiosis incorporating anaerobic digestion cogeneration photovoltaic and hydrogen production technologies. Additionally a Bayesian best-worst method is used to evaluate the weights of the sustainability aspects by decision-makers integrating these into the mathematical model. The model optimises industrial plant locations considering economic environmental and social parameters including the net present value energy consumption and carbon footprint. The model’s functionalities are demonstrated through a real-world case study based in Emilia Romagna Italy. It is subject to sensitivity analysis to evaluate how changes in the inputs affect the outcomes and highlights feasible trade-offs through the exploration of the ϵ-constraint. The findings demonstrate that the model substantially boosts energy and hydrogen production. It is not only economically viable but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with fossil fuels and landfilling. Additionally it contributes to job creation. This research has significant implications with potential future studies intended to focus on system resilience plant location optimisation and sustainability assessment.
A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Framework for Zero Emission Vehicle Fleet Renewal Considering Lifecycle and Scenario Uncertainty

: In the last decade with the increased concerns about the global environment attempts have been made to promote the replacement of fossil fuels with sustainable sources. For transport which accounts for around a quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions meeting climate neutrality goals will require replacing existing fleets with electric or hydrogen-propelled vehicles. However the lack of adequate decision support approach makes the introduction of new propulsion technologies in the transportation sector a complex strategic decision problem where distorted non-optimal decisions may easily result in long-term negative effects on the performance of logistic operators. This research addresses the problem of transport fleet renewal by proposing a multi-criteria decision-making approach and takes into account the multiple propulsion technologies currently available and the objectives of the EU Green Deal as well as the inherent scenario uncertainty. The proposed approach based on the TOPSIS model involves a novel decision framework referred to as a generalized life cycle evaluation of the environmental and cost objectives which is necessary when comparing green and traditional propulsion systems in a long-term perspective to avoid distorted decisions. Since the objective of the study is to provide a practical methodology to support strategic decisions the framework proposed has been validated against a practical case referred to the strategic fleet renewal decision process. The results obtained demonstrate how the decision maker’s perception of the technological evolution of the propulsion technologies influences the decision process thus leading to different optimal choices.
Optimal Design of a Hydrogen-powered Fuel Cell System for Aircraft Applications

Recently hydrogen and fuel cells have gained interest as an emerging technology to mitigate the effects of climate change caused by the aviation sector. The aim of this work is to evaluate the applicability of this technology to an existing regional aircraft in order to assess its electrification with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainability goals. The design of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell system (PEMFC) with the inclusion of liquid hydrogen storage is carried out. Specifically a general mathematical model is developed which involves multiple scales ranging from individual cells to aircraft scale. First the fuel cell electrochemical model is developed and validated against published polarization curves. Then different sizing approaches are used to compute the overall weight of the hydrogen-based propulsion system in order to optimize the system and minimize its weight. Crucially this work underscores that the feasibility of hydrogenbased fuel cell systems relies not only on hydrogen storage but especially on the electrochemical cell performance which influences the size of the balance of plant and especially its thermal management section. In particular the strategic significance of working with fuel cells at partial loads is demonstrated. This entails achieving an optimal balance between the stacks oversizing and the weights of both hydrogen storage and balance of plant thereby minimizing the overall weight of the system. It is thus shown that an integrated approach is imperative to guide progress towards efficient and implementable hydrogen technology in regional aviation. Furthermore a high-performance PEMFC is analyzed resulting in an overall weight reduction up to nearly 10% compared to the baseline case study. In this way it is demonstrated as technological advancements in PEMFCs can offer further prospects for improving system efficiency.
A Hydrogen-fuelled Compressed Air Energy Storage System for Flexibility Reinforcement and Variable Renewable Energy Integration in Grids with High Generation Curtailment

Globally the increasing share of renewables prominently driven by intermittent sources such as solar and wind power poses significant challenges to the reliability of current electrical infrastructures leading to the adoption of extreme measures such as generation curtailment to preserve grid security. Within this framework it is essential to develop energy storage systems that contribute to reinforce the flexibility and security of power grids while simultaneously reducing the share of generation curtailment. Therefore this study investigates the performance of an integrated photovoltaic-hydrogen fuelled-compressed air energy storage system whose configuration is specifically conceived to enable the connection of additional intermittent sources in already saturated grids. The yearly and seasonal performance of the integrated energy storage system specifically designed to supply flexibility services are evaluated for a scenario represented by a real grid with high-variable renewables penetration and frequent dispatchability issues. Results show that the integrated system with performanceoptimized components and a new energy management strategy minimizes photovoltaic energy curtailment otherwise around 50% to as low as 4% per year achieving system efficiencies of up to 62% and reinforces the grid by supplying inertial power for up to 20% of nighttime hours. In conclusion the integrated plant operating with zero emissions on-site hydrogen production and optimized for non-dispatchable photovoltaic energy utilization proves to be effective in integrating new variable renewable sources and reinforcing saturated grids particularly during spring and summer.
