Optimization of Emergency Alternatives for Hydrogen Leakage and Explosion Accidents Based on Improved VIKOR

Hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents have obvious dangers ambiguity of accident information and urgency of decision-making time. These characteristics bring challenges to the optimization of emergency alternatives for such accidents. Effective emergency decision making is crucial to mitigating the consequences of accidents and minimizing losses and can provide a vital reference for emergency management in the field of hydrogen energy. An improved VIKOR emergency alternatives optimization method is proposed based on the combination of hesitant triangular fuzzy set (HTFS) and the cumulative prospect theory (CPT) termed the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method. This method adopts the hesitant triangular fuzzy number to represent the decision information on the alternatives under the influence of multi-attributes constructs alternatives evaluation indicators and solves the indicator weights by using the deviation method. Based on CPT positive and negative ideal points were used as reference points to construct the prospect matrix which then utilized the VIKOR method to optimize the emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents. Taking an accident at a hydrogen refueling station as an example the effectiveness and rationality of the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method were verified by comparing with the existing three methods and conducting parameter sensitivity analysis. Research results show that the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method effectively captures the limited psychological behavior characteristics of decision makers and enhances their ability to identify filter and judge ambiguous information making the decisionmaking alternatives more in line with the actual environment which provided strong support for the optimization of emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents.
Mitigating Emissions in the Global Steel Industry: Representing CCS and Hydrogen Technologies in Integrated Assessment Modelling

We conduct a techno-economic assessment of two low-emissions steel production technologies and evaluate their deployment in emissions mitigation scenarios utilizing the MIT Economic Projection and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model. Specifically we assess direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace with carbon capture and storage (DRI-EAF with CCS) and H2-based direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace (H2 DRI-EAF) which utilizes low carbon hydrogen to reduce CO2 emissions. Our techno-economic analysis based on the current state of technologies found that DRI-EAF with CCS increased costs ~7% relative to the conventional steel technology. H2 DRI-EAF increased costs by ~18% when utilizing Blue hydrogen and ~79% when using Green hydrogen. The exact pathways for hydrogen production in different world regions including the extent of CCS and hydrogen deployment in steelmaking are highly speculative at this point. In illustrative scenarios using EPPA we find that using base cost assumptions switching from BF-BOF to DRI-EAF or scrap EAF can provide significant emissions mitigation within steelmaking. With further reductions in the cost of advanced steelmaking we find a greater role for DRI-EAF with CCS whereas reductions in both the cost of advanced steelmaking and hydrogen production lead to a greater role for H2 DRI-EAF. Our findings can be used to help decision-makers assess various decarbonization options and design economically efficient pathways to reduce emissions in the steel industry. Our cost evaluation can also be used to inform other energy-economic and integrated assessment models designed to provide insights about future decarbonization pathways.
Thermodynamic Modelling and Optimisation of a Green Hydrogen-blended Syngas-fueled Integrated PV-SOFC System

Developing an effective energy transition roadmap is crucial in the face of global commitments to achieve net zero emissions. While renewable power generation systems are expanding challenges such as curtailments and grid constraints can lead to energy loss. To address this surplus electricity can be converted into green hydrogen serving as a key component in the energy transition. This research explores the use of renewable solar energy for powering a proton exchange membrane electrolyser to produce green hydrogen while a downdraft gasifier fed by municipal solid waste generates hydrogen-enriched syngas. The blended fuel is then used to feed a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The study investigates the impact of hydrogen content on the performance of the fuel cell-based power plant from thermodynamics and exergoeconomic perspectives. Multiobjective optimisation using a genetic algorithm identifies optimal operating conditions for the system. Results show that blending hydrogen with syngas increases combined heat and power efficiency by up to 3% but also raises remarkably the unit product cost and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore the optimal values for hydrogen content current density temperatures and other parameters are determined. These findings contribute to the design and operation of an efficient and sustainable energy generation system.
Mid-century Net-zero Emissions Pathways for Japan: Potential Roles of Global Mitigation Scenarios in Informing National Decarbonisation Strategies

Japan has formulated a net-zero emissions target by 2050. Existing scenarios consistent with this target generally depend on carbon dioxide removal (CDR). In addition to domestic mitigation actions the import of low-carbon energy carriers such as hydrogen and synfuels and negative emissions credits are alternative options for achieving net-zero emissions in Japan. Although the potential and costs of these actions depend on global energy system transition characteristics which can potentially be informed by the global integrated assessment models they are not considered in current national scenario assessments. This study explores diverse options for achieving Japan's net-zero emissions target by 2050 using a national energy system model informed by international energy trade and emission credits costs estimated with a global energy system model. We found that demand-side electrification and approximately 100 Mt-CO2 per year of CDR implementation equivalent to approximately 10% of the current national CO2 emissions are essential across all net-zero emissions scenarios. Upscaling of domestically generated hydrogen-based alternative fuels and energy demand reduction can avoid further reliance on CDR. While imports of hydrogen-based energy carriers and emission credits are effective options annual import costs exceed the current cost of fossil fuel imports. In addition import dependency reaches approximately 50% in the scenario relying on hydrogen imports. This study highlights the importance of considering global trade when developing national net-zero emissions scenarios and describes potential new roles for global models.
Profitability Model of Green Hydrogen Production on an Existing Wind Power Plant Location

This paper presents a new economic profitability model for a power-to-gas plant producing green hydrogen at the site of an existing wind power plant injected into the gas grid. The model is based on a 42 MW wind power plant for which an optimal electrolyzer of 10 MW was calculated based on the 2500 equivalent full load hours per year and the projection of electricity prices. The model is calculated on an hourly level for all variables of the 25 years of the model. With the calculated breakeven electricity price of 74.23 EUR/MWh and the price of green hydrogen production of 99.44 EUR/MWh in 2045 the wind power plant would produce 22410 MWh of green hydrogen from 31% of its total electricity production. Green hydrogen injected into the gas system would reduce the level of CO2 emissions by 4482 tons. However with the projected prices of natural gas and electricity the wind power plant would cover only 20% of the income generated by the electricity delivered to the grid by producing green hydrogen. By calculating different scenarios in the model the authors concluded that the introduction of a premium subsidy model is necessary to accelerate deployment of electrolyzers at the site of an existing wind power plant in order to increase the wind farm profitability.
Energy Storage Strategy - Phase 2

This document is phase 2 of the energy storage strategy study and it covers the storage challenges of the energy transition. We start in section 3 by covering historical and current natural gas imports into the UK and what these could look like in the future. In section 4 we explore what demand for hydrogen could look like – this has a high level of uncertainty and future policy decisions will have significant impacts on hydrogen volumes and annual variations. We generated two hydrogen storage scenarios based on National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios and the Climate Change Committee’s Sixth Carbon Budget to assess the future need for hydrogen storage in the UK. We also looked at an extreme weather scenario resulting from an area of high-pressure settled over the British Isles resulting in very low ambient temperatures an unusually high demand for heating and almost no wind generation. In section 5 we investigate options for hydrogen storage and build on work previously carried out by SGN. We discuss the differences between the properties of hydrogen and natural gas and how this affects line pack and depletion of line pack. We discuss flexibility on the supply and demand side and how this can impact on hydrogen storage. We provide a summary table which compares the various options for storage. In section 5 we explore hydrogen trade and options for import and export. Using information from other innovation projects we also discuss production of hydrogen from nuclear power and the impact of hybrid appliances on gas demand for domestic heat. In section 7 we discuss the outputs from a stakeholder workshop with about 40 stakeholders across industry academia and government. The workshop covered UK gas storage strategy to date hydrogen demand and corresponding storage scenarios to 2050 including consideration of seasonal variation and storage options.
An Overview of Hydrogen Energy Generation

The global issue of climate change caused by humans and its inextricable linkage to our present and future energy demand presents the biggest challenge facing our globe. Hydrogen has been introduced as a new renewable energy resource. It is envisaged to be a crucial vector in the vast low-carbon transition to mitigate climate change minimize oil reliance reinforce energy security solve the intermittency of renewable energy resources and ameliorate energy performance in the transportation sector by using it in energy storage energy generation and transport sectors. Many technologies have been developed to generate hydrogen. The current paper presents a review of the current and developing technologies to produce hydrogen from fossil fuels and alternative resources like water and biomass. The results showed that reformation and gasification are the most mature and used technologies. However the weaknesses of these technologies include high energy consumption and high carbon emissions. Thermochemical water splitting biohydrogen and photo-electrolysis are long-term and clean technologies but they require more technical development and cost reduction to implement reformation technologies efficiently and on a large scale. A combination of water electrolysis with renewable energy resources is an ecofriendly method. Since hydrogen is viewed as a considerable game-changer for future fuels this paper also highlights the challenges facing hydrogen generation. Moreover an economic analysis of the technologies used to generate hydrogen is carried out in this study.
Economic Analysis of a Photovoltaic Hydrogen Refueling Station Based on Hydrogen Load

With the goal of achieving “carbon peak in 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2060” as clearly proposed by China the transportation sector will face long–term pressure on carbon emissions and the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will usher in a rapid growth period. However true “zero carbon” emissions cannot be separated from “green hydrogen”. Therefore it is of practical significance to explore the feasibility of renewable energy hydrogen production in the context of hydrogen refueling stations especially photovoltaic hydrogen production which is applied to hydrogen refueling stations (hereinafter referred to “photovoltaic hydrogen refueling stations”). This paper takes a hydrogen refueling station in Shanghai with a supply capacity of 500 kg/day as the research object. Based on a characteristic analysis of the hydrogen demand of the hydrogen refueling station throughout the day this paper studies and analyzes the system configuration operation strategy environmental effects and economics of the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station. It is estimated that when the hydrogen price is no less than 6.23 USD the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station has good economic benefits. Additionally compared with the conventional hydrogen refueling station it can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1237.28 tons per year with good environmental benefits.
Environmental Assessment of Replacing Fossil Fuels with Hydrogen for Motorised Equipment in the Mining Sector

To achieve the European milestone of climate neutrality by 2050 the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries is essential. In 2022 global energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 0.9% or 321 Mt reaching a peak of over 36.8 Gt. A large amount of these emissions is the result of fossil fuel usage in the motorised equipment used in mining. Heavy diesel vehicles like excavators wheel loaders and dozers are responsible for an estimated annual CO2 emissions of 400 Mt of CO2 accounting for approximately 1.1% of global CO2 emissions. In addition exhaust gases of CO2 and NOx endanger the personnel’s health in all mining operations especially in underground environments. To tackle these environmental concerns and enhance environmental health extractive industries are focusing on replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels of low or zero CO2 emissions. In mining the International Council on Mining and Metals has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. Of the various alternative fuels hydrogen (H2 ) has seen a considerable rise in popularity in recent years as H2 combustion accounts for zero CO2 emissions due to the lack of carbon in the burning process. When combusted with pure oxygen it also accounts for zero NOx formation and near-zero emissions overall. To this end this study aims to examine the overall environmental performance of H2 -powered motorised equipment compared to conventional fossil fuel-powered equipment through Life Cycle Assessment. The assessment was conducted using the commercial software Sphera LCA for Experts following the conventionally used framework established by ISO 14040:2006 and 14044:2006/A1:2018 and the International Life Cycle Data Handbook consisting of (1) the goal and scope definition (2) the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) preparation (3) the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and (4) the interpretation of the results. The results will offer an overview to support decision-makers in the sector.
Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control

This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation operating and maintenance costs as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical their levels of degradation in general will not be. Thus over time each stack can present a different behavior. Therefore the power control strategy cannot be based on an equal distribution according to the nominal power of each stack. On the contrary the control algorithm should take advantage of the characteristics of the multi-stack FC concept distributing operation across all the stacks regarding their capacity to produce power/energy and optimizing the overall performance.

Cryogenic and Ambient Gaseous Hydrogen Blowdown with Discharge Line Effects

The present work performed within the PRESLHY EC-project presents a simplified 1-d transient modelling methodology to account for discharge line effects during blowdown. The current formulation includes friction extra resistance area change and heat transfer through the discharge line walls and is able to calculate the mass flow rate and distribution of all physical variables along the discharge line. Choked flow at any time during the transient is calculated using the Possible Impossible Flow (PIF) algorithm. Hydrogen single phase physical properties and vapour-liquid equilibrium are calculated using the Helmholtz Free Energy (HFE) formulation. Homogeneous Equilibrium Mixture (HEM) model is used for two-phase physical properties. Validation is performed against the new experiments with compressed gaseous hydrogen performed at the DISCHA facility in the framework of PRESLHY (200 bar ambient and cryogenic initial tank temperature 77 K and 4 nozzle diameters 0.5 1 2 and 4 mm) and an older experiment at 900 bar ambient temperature and 2 mm nozzle. Predictions are compared against measured data from the experiments and the relative importance of line heat transfer compared to flow resistance is analysed.
Injection of Gaseous Hydrogen into a Natural Gas Pipeline

The injection of pure hydrogen at a T-junction into a horizontal pipe carrying natural gas is analysed computationally to understand the influence of blending and pipe geometry (diameter ratio various 90 orientations) on mixing for a target of 4.8e20% volume fraction hydrogen blend. The strongly inhomogeneous distribution of hydrogen within the pipe flow and on the pipe walls could indicate the location of potential pipe material degradation including embrittlement effects. The low molecular mass of hydrogen reduces the penetration of a side-branch flow and increases the buoyancy forces leading to stratification with high hydrogen concentrations on the upper pipe surface downstream of the branch. Top-side injection leads to the hydrogen concentration remaining >40% for up to 8 pipe diameters from the injection point for volumetric dilutions ( D) less than 30%. Under-side injection promotes mixing within the flow interior and reduces wall concentration at the lower surface compared to top-side injection. The practical implications for these results in terms of mixing requirements and the contrasting constraint of codes of practice and energy demands are discussed.
Hydrogen-Assisted Cracking in GMA Welding of High-Strength Structural Steel—A New Look into This Issue at Narrow Groove

Modern arc processes such as the modified spray arc (Mod. SA) have been developed for gas metal arc welding of high-strength structural steels with which even narrow weld seams can be welded. High-strength joints are subjected to increasingly stringent requirements in terms of welding processing and the resulting component performance. In the present work this challenge is to be met by clarifying the influences on hydrogen-assisted cracking (HAC) in a high-strength structural steel S960QL. Adapted samples analogous to the self-restraint TEKKEN test are used and analyzed with respect to crack formation microstructure diffusible hydrogen concentration and residual stresses. The variation of the seam opening angle of the test seams is between 30° and 60°. To prevent HAC the effectiveness of a dehydrogenation heat treatment (DHT) from the welding heat is investigated. As a result the weld metals produced at reduced weld opening angle show slightly higher hydrogen concentrations on average. In addition increased micro- as well as macro-crack formation can be observed on these weld metal samples. On all samples without DHT cracks in the root notch occur due to HAC which can be prevented by DHT immediately after welding.
Alternative-energy-vehicles Deployment Delivers Climate, Air Quality, and Health Co-benefits when Coupled with Decarbonizing Power Generation in China

China is the world’s largest carbon emitter and suffers from severe air pollution which results in approximately one million premature deaths/year. Alternative energy vehicles (AEVs) (electric hydrogen fuel cell and natural gas vehicles) can reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. However climate air quality and health benefits of AEVs powered with deeply decarbonized power generation are poorly quantified. Here we quantitatively estimate the air quality health carbon emission and economic benefits of replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with various AEVs. We find co-benefits increase dramatically as the electricity grid decarbonizes and hydrogen is produced from non-fossil fuels. Relative to 2015 a conversion to AEVs using largely non-fossil power can reduce air pollution and associated premature mortalities and years of life lost by 329000 persons/year and 1611000 life years/year. Thus maximizing climate air quality and health benefits of AEV deployment in China requires rapid decarbonization of the power system.
Influence of Cs Promoter on Ethanol Steam-Reforming Selectivity of Pt/m-ZrO2 Catalysts at Low Temperature

The decarboxylation pathway in ethanol steam reforming ultimately favors higher selectivity to hydrogen over the decarbonylation mechanism. The addition of an optimized amount of Cs to Pt/m-ZrO2 catalysts increases the basicity and promotes the decarboxylation route converting ethanol to mainly H2 CO2 and CH4 at low temperature with virtually no decarbonylation being detected. This offers the potential to feed the product stream into a conventional methane steam reformer for the production of hydrogen with higher selectivity. DRIFTS and the temperature-programmed reaction of ethanol steam reforming as well as fixed bed catalyst testing revealed that the addition of just 2.9% Cs was able to stave off decarbonylation almost completely by attenuating the metallic function. This occurs with a decrease in ethanol conversion of just 16% relative to the undoped catalyst. In comparison with our previous work with Na this amount is—on an equivalent atomic basis—just 28% of the amount of Na that is required to achieve the same effect. Thus Cs is a much more efficient promoter than Na in facilitating decarboxylation.
A New Energy System Based on Biomass Gasification for Hydrogen and Power Production

In this paper a new gasification system is developed for the three useful outputs of electricity heat and hydrogen and reported for practical energy applications. The study also investigates the composition of syngas leaving biomass gasifier. The composition of syngas is represented by the fractions of hydrogen carbon dioxide carbon monoxide and water. The integrated energy system comprises of an entrained flow gasifier a Cryogenic Air Separation (CAS) unit a double-stage Rankine cycle Water Gas Shift Reactor (WGSR) a combined gas–steam power cycle and a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. The whole integrated system is modeled in the Aspen plus 9.0 excluding the PEM electrolyzer which is modeled in Engineering Equation Solver (EES). A comprehensive parametric investigation is conducted by varying numerous parameters like biomass flow rate steam flow rate air input flow rate combustion reactor temperature and power supplied to the electrolyzer. The system is designed in a way to supply the power produced by the steam Rankine cycle to the PEM electrolyzer for hydrogen production. The overall energy efficiency is obtained to be 53.7% where the exergy efficiency is found to be 45.5%. Furthermore the effect of the biomass flow rate is investigated on the various system operational parameters.
Investigation into the Cross-sensitivity of Domestic Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Hydrogen

Preliminary research suggests domestic carbon monoxide detectors with an electrochemical sensor are approximately 10 -20% sensitive to hydrogen atmospheres in their factory configuration. That is the display on a carbon monoxide detector would give a carbon monoxide reading of approximately 10-20% of the concentration of hydrogen it is exposed to. Current British standards require detectors to sound an alarm within three minutes when subjected to a continuous concentration of ≥ 300 ppm CO. This would equate to a concentration of 1500-3000 ppm hydrogen in air or approximately 3.75 – 7% %LEL. The current evacuation criteria for a natural gas leak in a domestic property is 20 %LEL indicating that standard carbon monoxide detectors could be used as cheap and reliable early warning systems for hydrogen leaks. Given the wide use of carbon monoxide detectors and the affordability of the devices the use of carbon monoxide detectors for hydrogen detection is of particular interest as the UK drives towards energy decarbonisation. Experiments to determine the exact sensitivity of a range of the most common domestic carbon monoxide detectors have been completed by DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing. Determining the effects of repeated exposure to varying concentrations of hydrogen in air on the sensitivity of electrochemical sensors allows recommendations to be made on their adoption as hydrogen detectors. Changing the catalysts used within the electrochemical cell would improve the sensitivity to hydrogen however simply calibrating the sensor to report a concentration of hydrogen rather than carbon monoxide would represent no additional costs to manufacturers. Having determined the suitability of such sensors at an early stage; the technology can then be linked with other technological developments required for the change to hydrogen for domestic heating (e.g. change in metering equipment and appliances). This report finds that from five simple and widely available carbon monoxide detectors the lowest sensitivity to hydrogen measured at the concentration required to sound an alarm within three minutes was approximately 10%. It was also discovered that as the hydrogen concentration was increased over the range tested the sensitivity to hydrogen also increased. It is proposed that coupling these devices with other elements of the domestic gas system would allow actions such as remote meter isolation or automatic warning signals sent to response services would provide a reliable and inherently safe system for protecting occupants as gas networks transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect it is noted that wireless linking of smoke and heat detectors for domestic application is already widely available in low-cost devices. This could be extended to CO detectors adapted for hydrogen use.
Renewable Hydrogen Implementations for Combined Energy Storage, Transportation and Stationary Applications

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potential of hydrogen obtained from renewable sources for energy generation and storage systems. The first part of analysis will address such issues as various methods of green hydrogen production storage and transportation. The review of hydrogen generation methods will be followed by the critical analysis and the selection of production method. This selection is justified by the results of the comparative research on alternative green hydrogen generation technologies with focus on their environmental impacts and costs. The comparative analysis includes the biomass-based methods as well as water splitting and photo-catalysis methods while water electrolysis is taken as a benchmark. Hydrogen storage and transportation issues will be further discussed in purpose to form the list of recommended solutions. In the second part of the paper the technology readiness and technical feasibility for joint hydrogen applications will be analysed. This will include the energy storage and production systems based on renewable hydrogen in combination with hydrogen usage in mobility systems as well as the stationary applications in buildings such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants or fuel cell electric generators. Based on the analysis of the selected case studies the author will discuss the role of hydrogen for the carbon emission reduction with the stress on the real value of carbon footprint of hydrogen depending on the gas source storage transportation and applications.
