The Role of Hydrogen in Heavy Transport to Operate within Planetary Boundaries

Green hydrogen i.e. produced from renewable resources is attracting attention as an alternative fuel for the future of heavy road transport and long-distance driving. However the benefits linked to zero pollution at the usage stage can be overturned when considering the upstream processes linked to the raw materials and energy requirements. To better understand the global environmental implications of fuelling heavy transport with hydrogen we quantified the environmental impacts over the full life cycle of hydrogen use in the context of the Planetary Boundaries (PBs). The scenarios assessed cover hydrogen from biomass gasification (with and without carbon capture and storage [CCS]) and electrolysis powered by wind solar bioenergy with CCS nuclear and grid electricity. Our results show that the current diesel-based-heavy transport sector is unsustainable due to the transgression of the climate change-related PBs (exceeding standalone by two times the global climate-change budget). Hydrogen-fuelled heavy transport would reduce the global pressure on the climate change-related PBs helping the transport sector to stay within the safe operating space (i.e. below one-third of the global ecological budget in all the scenarios analysed). However the best scenarios in terms of climate change which are biomass-based would shift burdens to the biosphere integrity and nitrogen flow PBs. In contrast burden shifting in the electrolytic scenarios would be negligible with hydrogen from wind electricity emerging as an appealing technology despite attaining higher carbon emissions than the biomass routes
Multi-state Techno-economic Model for Optimal Dispatch of Grid Connected Hydrogen Electrolysis Systems Operating Under Dynamic Conditions

The production of hydrogen through water electrolysis is a promising pathway to decarbonize the energy sector. This paper presents a techno-economic model of electrolysis plants based on multiple states of operation: production hot standby and idle. The model enables the calculation of the optimal hourly dispatch of electrolyzers to produce hydrogen for different end uses. This model has been tested with real data from an existing installation and compared with a simpler electrolyzer model that is based on two states. The results indicate that an operational strategy that considers the multi-state model leads to a decrease in final hydrogen production costs. These reduced costs will benefit businesses especially while electrolysis plants grow in size to accommodate further increases in demand.
Multi-Tubular Reactor for Hydrogen Production CFD Thermal Design and Experimental Testing

This study presents the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) thermal design and experimental tests results for a multi-tubular solar reactor for hydrogen production based on the ferrite thermochemical cycle in a pilot plant in the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA). The methodology followed for the solar reactor design is described as well as the experimental tests carried out during the testing campaign and characterization of the reactor. The CFD model developed for the thermal design of the solar reactor has been validated against the experimental measurements with a temperature error ranging from 1% to around 10% depending on the location within the reactor. The thermal balance in the reactor (cavity and tubes) has been also solved by the CFD model showing a 7.9% thermal efficiency of the reactor. CFD results also show the percentage of reacting media inside the tubes which achieve the required temperature for the endothermic reaction process with 90% of the ferrite pellets inside the tubes above the required temperature of 900 °C. Magnesium hydride owns the largest share of publications on solid materials for hydrogen storage. The “Magnesium group” of international experts contributing to IEA Task 32 “Hydrogen Based Energy Storage” recently published two review papers presenting the activities of the group focused on magnesium hydride based materials and on Mg based compounds for hydrogen and energy storage. This review article not only overviews the latest activities on both fundamental aspects of Mg-based hydrides and their applications but also presents a historic overview on the topic and outlines projected future developments. Particular attention is paid to the theoretical and experimental studies of Mg-H system at extreme pressures kinetics and thermodynamics of the systems based on MgH2 nanostructuring new Mg-based compounds and novel composites and catalysis in the Mg based H storage systems. Finally thermal energy storage and upscaled H storage systems accommodating MgH2 are presented.
Standalone Renewable Energy and Hydrogen in an Agricultural Context: A Demonstrative Case

Standalone renewable energy is widely used to power irrigation systems. However in agricultural facilities electricity from the grid and diesel are also consumed. The design and sizing of renewable generation involves difficulties derived from the different seasonal profiles of production and demand. If the generation is 100% renewable a considerable energy surplus is usually included. This paper is focused on a renewable energy system which has been installed in a vineyard located in the northeast of Spain. With energy from the photovoltaic fields the wastewater treatment plant of the winery a drip irrigation system and other ancillary consumptions are fed. The favourable effect of combining consumptions with different seasonal profiles is shown. The existence of some deferrable loads and the energy management strategy result in an aggregate consumption curve that is well suited to production. Besides the required energy storage is relatively small. The surplus energy is used for the on-site production of hydrogen by the electrolysis of water. The hydrogen refuels a hybrid fuel cell electric vehicle used for the mobility of workers in the vineyard. In summary electricity and hydrogen are produced on-site (to meet the energy needs) from 100% renewable sources and without operating emissions.
End of Life of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Products: From Technologies to Strategies

End-of-Life (EoL) technologies and strategies are needed to support the deployment of fuel cells and hydrogen (FCH) products. This article explores current and novel EoL technologies to recover valuable materials from the stacks of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and water electrolysers alkaline water electrolysers and solid oxide fuel cells. Current EoL technologies are mainly based on hydrometallurgical and pyro-hydrometallurgical methods for the recovery of noble metals while novel methods attempt to recover additional materials through efficient safe and cost-competitive pathways. Strengths weaknesses opportunities and threats of the reviewed EoL technologies are identified under techno-economic environmental and regulatory aspects. Beyond technologies strategies for the EoL of FCH stacks are defined mainly based on the role of manufacturers and recovery centres in the short- mid- and long-term. In this regard a dual role manufacturer/recovery centre would characterise long-term scenarios within a potential context of a well-established hydrogen economy.

Metal hydrides are known as a potential efficient low-risk option for high-density hydrogen storage since the late 1970s. In this paper the present status and the future perspectives of the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage are discussed. Since the early 1990s interstitial metal hydrides are known as base materials for Ni – metal hydride rechargeable batteries. For hydrogen storage metal hydride systems have been developed in the 2010s [1] for use in emergency or backup power units i. e. for stationary applications.<br/>With the development and completion of the first submarines of the U212 A series by HDW (now Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems) in 2003 and its export class U214 in 2004 the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage in mobile applications has been established with new application fields coming into focus.<br/>In the last decades a huge number of new intermetallic and partially covalent hydrogen absorbing compounds has been identified and partly more partly less extensively characterized.<br/>In addition based on the thermodynamic properties of metal hydrides this class of materials gives the opportunity to develop a new hydrogen compression technology. They allow the direct conversion from thermal energy into the compression of hydrogen gas without the need of any moving parts. Such compressors have been developed and are nowadays commercially available for pressures up to 200 bar. Metal hydride based compressors for higher pressures are under development. Moreover storage systems consisting of the combination of metal hydrides and high-pressure vessels have been proposed as a realistic solution for on-board hydrogen storage on fuel cell vehicles.<br/>In the frame of the “Hydrogen Storage Systems for Mobile and Stationary Applications” Group in the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Task 32 “Hydrogen-based energy storage” different compounds have been and will be scaled-up in the near future and tested in the range of 500 g to several hundred kg for use in hydrogen storage applications.
Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulations of the Hydrogen Storage Capacities of Slit-shaped Pores, Nanotubes and Torusenes

Grand Canonical Monte Carlo GCMC simulations are used to study the gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen storage capacities of different carbon nanopores shapes: Slit-shaped nanotubes and torusenes at room temperature 298.15 K and at pressures between 0.1 and 35 MPa and for pore diameter or width between 4 and 15 A. The influence of the pore shape or curvature on the storage capacities as a function of pressure temperature and pore diameter is investigated and analyzed. A large curvature of the pores means in general an increase of the storage capacities of the pores. While torusenes and nanotubes have surfaces with more curvature than the slit-shaped planar pores their capacities are lower than those of the slit-shaped pores according to the present GCMC simulations. Torusene a less studied carbon nanostructure has two radii or curvatures but their storage capacities are similar or lower than those of nanotubes which have only one radius or curvature. The goal is to obtain qualitative and quantitative relationships between the structure of porous materials and the hydrogen storage capacities in particular or especially the relationship between shape and width of the pores and the hydrogen storage capacities of carbon-based porous materials.
A Review of Techno-economic Data for Road Transportation Fuels

Worldwide the road transport sector typically arises as one of the main sources of air pollutants due to its high energy intensity and the use of fossil fuels. Thus governments and social agents work on the development and prospective planning of decarbonisation strategies oriented towards sustainable transport. In this regard the increase in the use of alternative fuels is the recurrent approach to energy planning e.g. through the promotion of electric vehicles biofuels natural gas liquefied petroleum gas etc. However there is a lack of comprehensive information on the techno-economic performance of production pathways for alternative fuels. The acquisition of robust techno-economic data is still a challenge for energy planners modellers analysts and policy-makers when building their prospective models to support decision-making processes. Hence this article aims to fill this gap through a deep literature review including the most representative production routes for a wide range of road transportation fuels. This led to the development of datasets including investment costs operating and maintenance costs and transformation efficiencies for more than 40 production pathways. The techno-economic data presented in this work are expected to be especially useful to those energy actors interested in performing long-term studies on the transition to a sustainable transport system.
Effect of the Strain Rate on the Fracture Behaviour of High Pressure Pre-Charged Samples

The aim of this work is to study the effect of the displacement rate on the hydrogen embrittlement of two different structural steels grades used in energetic applications. With this purpose samples were pre-charged with gaseous hydrogen at 19.5 MPa and 450 °C for 21 h. Then fracture tests of the pre-charged specimens were performed using different displacement rates. It is showed that the lower is the displacement rate and the largest is the steel strength the strongest is the reduction of the fracture toughness due to the presence of internal hydrogen.
Hydrogen Production by Steam Reforming of Ethanol on Rh-Pt Catalysts: Influence of CeO2, ZrO2, and La2O3 as Supports

CeO2- ZrO2- and La2O3-supported Rh-Pt catalysts were tested to assess their ability to catalyze the steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) for H2 production. SRE activity tests were performed using EtOH:H2O:N2 (molar ratio 1:3:51) at a gaseous space velocity of 70600 h−1 between 400 and 700 °C at atmospheric pressure. The SRE stability of the catalysts was tested at 700 °C for 27 h time on stream under the same conditions. RhPt/CeO2 which showed the best performance in the stability test also produced the highest H2 yield above 600 °C followed by RhPt/La2O3 and RhPt/ZrO2. The fresh and aged catalysts were characterized by TEM XPS and TGA. The higher H2 selectivity of RhPt/CeO2 was ascribed to the formation of small (~5 nm) and stable particles probably consistent of Rh-Pt alloys with a Pt surface enrichment. Both metals were oxidized and acted as an almost constant active phase during the stability test owing to strong metal-support interactions as well as the superior oxygen mobility of the support. The TGA results confirmed the absence of carbonaceous residues in all the aged catalysts.
Controller Design for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Systems for Automotive Applications

Continuous developments in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) make them a promising technology to achieve zero emissions in multiple applications including mobility. Incremental advancements in fuel cells materials and manufacture processes make them now suitable for commercialization. However the complex operation of fuel cell systems in automotive applications has some open issues yet. This work develops and compares three different controllers for PEMFC systems in automotive applications. All the controllers have a cascade control structure where a generator of setpoints sends references to the subsystems controllers with the objective to maximize operational efficiency. To develop the setpoints generators two techniques are evaluated: off-line optimization and Model Predictive Control (MPC). With the first technique the optimal setpoints are given by a map obtained off-line of the optimal steady state conditions and corresponding setpoints. With the second technique the setpoints time profiles that maximize the efficiency in an incoming time horizon are continuously computed. The proposed MPC architecture divides the fast and slow dynamics in order to reduce the computational cost. Two different MPC solutions have been implemented to deal with this fast/slow dynamics separation. After the integration of the setpoints generators with the subsystems controllers the different control systems are tested and compared using a dynamic detailed model of the automotive system in the INN-BALANCE project running under the New European Driving Cycle.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of R4 and R5 High-Strength Mooring Steels in Cold and Warm Seawater

Hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility ratios calculated from slow strain rate tensile tests have been employed to study the response of three high-strength mooring steels in cold and warm synthetic seawater. The selected nominal testing temperatures have been 3 °C and 23 °C in order to resemble sea sites of offshore platform installation interest such as the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico respectively. Three scenarios have been studied for each temperature: free corrosion cathodic protection and overprotection. An improvement on the hydrogen embrittlement tendency of the steels has been observed when working in cold conditions. This provides a new insight on the relevance of the seawater temperature as a characteristic to be taken into account for mooring line design in terms of hydrogen embrittlement assessment.
Analysis of the Hydrogen Induced Cracking by Means of the Small Punch Test: Effect of the Specimen Geometry and the Hydrogen Pre-Charge Mode

This paper presents a simplified procedure to analyse the Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) of structural steels by means of the Small Punch Test (SPT). Two types of notched specimens were used: one with through-thickness lateral notch and another with surface longitudinal notch. The results for conventional specimens were compared with those for hydrogen pre-charged specimens. For this purpose two different methods to introduce hydrogen in the specimens were used: cathodic/electrochemical pre-charging and pressurized gaseous hydrogen pre-charging. The results obtained with both methods are also discussed.
HyUnder – Hydrogen Underground Storage at Large Scale: Case Study Spain

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is understood as a system capable of storing energy for a later use in a controlled manner. Surplus electricity from renewable energy serves for green hydrogen generation via electrolysis. Once produced the hydrogen is stored for later consumption. This paper describes the Spanish Case Study of the HyUnder project which aims to evaluate the potential of underground hydrogen storage for large-scale energy storage along Europe analysing besides the Spanish Case France Germany the Netherlands Romania and the United Kingdom. This case study has considered for the assessment the competitiveness of hydrogen storage against other large scale energy storage concepts the geological potential for hydrogen storage in the region how to embed the hydrogen energy storage in the energy market and the possible business cases in four different applications: transport Power to Gas re-electrification and industry taking into account all the economic aspects such us the electrolyser OPEX and CAPEX or the cavern electricity and water costs. It is shown that the Spanish geology can provide four technical options for hydrogen underground storage. Results have shown the interest of the technology in short – medium term especially linked to certain conditions of high intermittent renewable energy penetration in the Spanish power grid that result in surplus or residual electricity. Hydrogen storage is interesting because it can integrate renewable energy systems in other sectors which do not have overcapacity and a high use of fossil fuels as the natural gas sector and the transport sector. Moreover all the economic issues have been analysed for two different horizons 2025 and 2050; concluding that the average price of electricity is the main cost. From the financial results transport application represents a business case which although in order has enough values of hydrogen demand to be stored combination of different applications must be needed in order to make sense to the development of the cavern.
Investment in Wind-based Hydrogen Production under Economic and Physical Uncertainties

This paper evaluates the economic viability of a combined wind-based green-hydrogen facility from an investor’s viewpoint. The paper introduces a theoretical model and demonstrates it by example. The valuation model assumes that both the spot price of electricity and wind capacity factor evolve stochastically over time; these state variables can in principle be correlated. Besides it explicitly considers the possibility to use curtailed wind energy for producing hydrogen. The model derives the investment project’s net present value (NPV) as a function of hydrogen price and conversion capacity. Thus the NPV is computed for a given price and a range of capacities. The one that leads to the maximum NPV is the ‘optimal’ capacity (for the given price). Next the authors estimate the parameters underlying the two stochastic processes from Spanish hourly data. These numerical estimates allow simulate hourly paths of both variables over the facility’s expected useful lifetime (30 years). According to the results green hydrogen production starts becoming economically viable above 3 €/kg. Besides it takes a hydrogen price of 4.7 €/kg to reach an optimal conversion capacity half the capacity of the wind park. The authors develop sensitivity analyses with respect to wind capacity factor curtailment rate and discount rate.
Chilean National Green Hydrogen Strategy

Like hydrogen Chile is small by nature and accordingly contributes just 0.3% to global greenhouse gas emissions. However we too have an outsized role to play in turning the tide on rising emissions and pursuing a low carbon path to growth and development.<br/>What we lack in size we more than make up for in potential. In the desert in the North with the highest solar irradiance on the planet and in the Patagonia in the South with strong and consistent winds we have the renewable energy potential to install 70 times the electricity generation capacity we have today. This abundant renewable energy will enable us to become the cheapest producer of green hydrogen on Earth. Our National Green Hydrogen Strategy is aimed at turning this promise into reality.<br/>The Strategy is the result of collaborative work between industry academia civil society and the public sector and is an essential piece of our carbon neutrality plan and commitment to sustainable development. It will allow us to produce and export products that are created using zero carbon fuels distinguishing our exports as clean products for end users. It will also enable us to export our renewable energy to the world in the form of green liquid hydrogen green ammonia and clean synthetic fuels.<br/>Traditionally Chile lacked fossil fuels and was forced to import the energy it required. Now the coming of age of the tiniest atom will allow us to drive deep decarbonization in our own country and throughout the world. This Strategy is the first step for Chile in embracing this promise and fulfilling its new potential.
Hydrogen or Hydrogen-derived Methanol for Dual-fuel Compression-ignition Combustion: An Engine Perspective

Synthetic fuels or e-fuels produced from captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen are envisaged as a feasible path towards a climate-neutral transportation in medium/heavy-duty and maritime sectors. EU is presently debating energy targets by 2030 for these fuels. As their production involves chemical processing of hydrogen it must be evaluated if the extra cost is worthy at least in applications where hydrogen use is possible. This manuscript focuses on the performance and environmental impact when hydrogen and methanol are fed to a heavy-duty compression-ignition engine working under dual-fuel combustion. The trade-off thermal efficiency-NOx emissions is primary considered in the assessment by combining both variables in an own defined function. During the work engine operating settings were adjusted to exploit the potential of methanol and hydrogen. Compared to conventional combustion methanol required centering the combustion towards TDC and doubling the EGR rate resulting in a low temperature highly premixed combustion almost soot-free and with extremely low NOx emissions. The best settings for hydrogen were in the middle of those for methanol and conventional combustion. Results showed great dependance with the engine load but methanol proved superior to hydrogen for all conditions. At high load 20–60 % methanol even improved the efficiency and reduced the NOx emissions obtained by conventional combustion. However at low load hydrogen could substitute 90 % of the diesel fuel while methanol failed at substitutions higher than 55 %.
Assessment of a Fully Renewable System for the Total Decarbonization of the Economy with Full Demand Coverage on Islands Connected to a Central Grid: The Balearic Case in 2040

The transition to clean electricity generation is a crucial focus for achieving the current objectives of economy decarbonization. The Balearic Archipelago faces significant environmental economic and social challenges in shifting from a predominantly fossil fuel-based economy to one based on renewable sources. This study proposes implementing a renewable energy mix and decarbonizing the economy of the Balearic Islands by 2040. The proposed system involves an entirely renewable generation system with interconnections between the four Balearic islands and the Spanish mainland grid via a 650 MW submarine cable. This flexible electrical exchange can cover approximately 35% of the peak demand of 1900 MW. The scenario comprises a 6 GWp solar photovoltaic system a wind system of under 1.2 GWp and a 600 MW biomass system as generation sub-systems. A vanadium redox flow battery sub-system with a storage capacity of approximately 21 GWh and 2.5 GWp power is available to ensure system manageability. This system’s levelized electricity cost (LCOE) is around 13.75 cEUR/kWh. The design also incorporates hydrogen as an alternative for difficult-to-electrify uses achieving effective decarbonization of all final energy uses. A production of slightly over 5 × 104 tH2 per year is required with 1.7 GW of electrolyzer power using excess electricity and water resources. The system enables a significant level of economy decarbonization although it requires substantial investments in both generation sources and storage.
Optimal Operation and Market Integration of a Hybrid Farm with Green Hydrogen and Energy Storage: A Stochastic Approach Considering Wind and Electricity Price Uncertainties

In recent years growing interest has emerged in investigating the integration of energy storage and green hydrogen production systems with renewable energy generators. These integrated systems address uncertainties related to renewable resource availability and electricity prices mitigating profit loss caused by forecasting errors. This paper focuses on the operation of a hybrid farm (HF) combining an alkaline electrolyzer (AEL) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a wind turbine to form a comprehensive HF. The HF operates in both hydrogen and day-ahead electricity markets. A linear mathematical model is proposed to optimize energy management considering electrolyzer operation at partial loads and accounting for degradation costs while maintaining a straightforward formulation for power system optimization. Day-ahead market scheduling and real-time operation are formulated as a progressive mixed-integer linear program (MILP) extended to address uncertainties in wind speed and electricity prices through a two-stage stochastic optimization model. A bootstrap sampling strategy is introduced to enhance the stochastic model’s performance using the same sampled data. Results demonstrate how the strategies outperform traditional Monte Carlo and deterministic approaches in handling uncertainties increasing profits up to 4% per year. Additionally a simulation framework has been developed for validating this approach and conducting different case studies.
Risk Management of Energy Communities with Hydrogen Production and Storage Technologies

The distributed integration of renewable energy sources plays a central role in the decarbonization of economies. In this regard energy communities arise as a promising entity to coordinate groups of proactive consumers (prosumers) and incentivize investment on clean technologies. However the uncertain nature of renewable energy generation residential loads and trading tariffs pose important challenges both at the operational and economic levels. We study how this management can be directly undertaken by an arbitrageur that making use of an adequate price-based demand response (real-time pricing) system serves as an intermediary with the central electricity market to coordinate different types of prosumers under risk aversion. In particular we consider a sequential futures and spot market where the aggregated shortage or excess of energy within the community can be traded. We aim to study the impact of new hydrogen production and storage technologies on community operation and risk management. These interactions are modeled as a game theoretical setting in the form of a stochastic two-stage bilevel optimization problem which is later reformulated without approximation as a single-level mixed-integer linear problem (MILP). An extensive set of numerical experiments based on real data is performed to study the operation of the energy community under different technical and economical conditions. Results indicate that the optimal involvement in futures and spot markets is highly conditioned by the community’s risk aversion and self-sufficiency levels. Moreover the external hydrogen market has a direct effect on the community’s internal price-tariff system and depending on the market conditions may worsen the utility of individual prosumers.
Technical Performance and Environmental Assessment of an Ionic Liquid-based CCS Process for Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen (H2) production combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS) is anticipated to be an important technology contributing to reduce the carbon footprint of current fossil-based H2 production systems. This work addresses for the first time the techno-environmental assessment of a CCS process based on the ionic liquid [Bmim][Acetate] for H2 production by steam methane reforming (SMR) and the comparison to conventional amine-based systems. Two different SMR plants using MDEA or [Bmim][Acetate] for CO2 capture were rigorously modelled using Aspen Plus to compute material and energy needs and emissions. Literature and simulation results were then used to perform a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) of these processes based on the ReCiPe model. Solvent synthesis CCS process and hydrogen production stages were considered for the cradle-to-gate analysis. Results showed that although [Bmim][Acetate] is a priori more harmful to the environment than amines (in a kg-to-kg comparison) LCIAs carried out for both CCS processes showed from 5 to 17 % lower environmental impacts values for all estimated categories when using [Bmim][Acetate] due to a 9.4 % more energy-efficient performance than MDEA which also reduced a 17.4 % the total utility cost. Indeed if a typical amine loss rate of 1.6 kg/tCO2 is assumed the values of the environmental impacts increase up to 14 % for the IL-based CCS plant but still maintaining its favorable results over MDEA. As consequence the SMR plant with the IL-based CCS system exhibited 3–20 % lower values for most of the studied impact categories. These results contribute to shed some light on evaluating the sustainability of ILs with respect to conventional solvents for CO2 capture and to guide the synthesis of new more sustainable ILs but also they would be used to compare the environmental burdens from the synthesis and process performance of other promising ILs for CO2 capture that are not environmentally assed yet.
Emerging Trends and Challenges in Pink Hydrogen Research

Pink hydrogen is the name given to the technological variant of hydrogen generation from nuclear energy. This technology aims to address the environmental challenges associated with conventional hydrogen production positioning itself as a more sustainable and eco-efficient alternative while offering a viable alternative to nuclear power as a source of electricity generation. The present research analyzes the landscape of pink hydrogen research an innovative strand of renewable energy research. The methodology included a comprehensive search of scientific databases which revealed a steady increase in the number of publications in recent years. This increase suggests a growing interest in and recognition of the importance of pink hydrogen in the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. The results reflect the immaturity of this technology where there is no single international strategy and where there is some diversity of research topic areas as well as a small number of relevant topics. It is estimated that the future development of Gen IV nuclear reactors as well as Small Modular Reactor (SMR) designs will also favor the implementation of pink hydrogen.
Intensification of Hydrogen Production: Pd–Ag Membrane on Tailored Hastelloy-X Filter for Membrane-Assisted Steam Methane Reforming

H2 production via membrane-assisted steam methane reforming (MA-SMR) can ensure higher energy efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional reforming processes (SMR). Ceramic-supported Pd–Ag membranes have been extensively investigated for membrane-assisted steam methane reforming applications with outstanding performance. However costs sealings for integration in the reactor structure and resistance to solicitations remain challenging issues. In this work the surface quality of a low-cost porous Hastelloy-X filter is improved by asymmetric filling with α-Al2O3 of decreasing size and deposition of γ-Al2O3 as an interdiffusion barrier. On the modified support a thin Pd–Ag layer was deposited via electroless plating (ELP) resulting in a membrane with H2/N2 selectivity >10000. The permeation characteristics of the membrane were studied followed by testing for membrane-assisted methane steam reforming. The results showed the ability of the membrane reactor to overcome thermodynamic conversion of the conventional process for all explored operating conditions as well as ensuring 99.3% H2 purity in the permeate stream at 500 ◦C and 4 bar.
Optimal Energy Management in a Standalone Microgrid, with Photovoltaic Generation, Short-Term Storage, and Hydrogen Production

This paper addresses the energy management of a standalone renewable energy system. The system is configured as a microgrid including photovoltaic generation a lead-acid battery as a short term energy storage system hydrogen production and several loads. In this microgrid an energy management strategy has been incorporated that pursues several objectives. On the one hand it aims to minimize the amount of energy cycled in the battery in order to reduce the associated losses and battery size. On the other hand it seeks to take advantage of the long-term surplus energy producing hydrogen and extracting it from the system to be used in a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle. A crucial factor in this approach is to accommodate the energy consumption to the energy demand and to achieve this a model predictive control (MPC) scheme is proposed. In this context proper models for solar estimation hydrogen production and battery energy storage will be presented. Moreover the controller is capable of advancing or delaying the deferrable loads from its prescheduled time. As a result a stable and efficient supply with a relatively small battery is obtained. Finally the proposed control scheme has been validated on a real case scenario.
Optimal Allocation of Energy Sources in Hydrogen Production for Sustainable Deployment of Electric Vehicles

We analyze the use of hydrogen as a fuel for the automotive industry with the aim of decarbonizing the economy. Hydrogen is a suitable option for avoiding pollutant gas emissions developing environmentally friendly technologies replacing fossil fuels with clean renewable energies and complying with the Paris Agreement and Glasgow resolutions. In this sense renewable energies such as wind solar photovoltaic geothermal biomass etc. can be used to produce the necessary hydrogen to power vehicles. In this way the entire process from hydrogen production to its consumption as fuel will be 100% clean. If we are to meet future energy demands it is necessary to forecast the amount of hydrogen needed taking into account the facilities currently available and new ones that will be required for its generation storage and distribution. This paper presents a process for optimizing hydrogen production for the automotive industry that considers the amount of hydrogen needed the type of facilities from which it will be produced how the different sources of production are to be combined to achieve a competitive product and the potential environmental impacts of each energy source. It can serve as a frame of reference for the various actors in the hydropower and automotive industries so that more efficient designs can be planned for the gradual introduction of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs). The methodology implemented in this paper sets an optimization problem for minimizing energy production costs and reducing environmental impacts according to the source of energy production. The EU framework with respect to the decarbonization of the economy the percentages of the different types of energy sources used and the non-polluting vehicle fleet in the automotive sector will be considered.
On the Bulk Transport of Green Hydrogen at Sea: Comparison Between Submarine Pipeline and Compressed and Liquefied Transport by Ship

This paper compares six (6) alternatives for green hydrogen transport at sea. Two (2) alternatives of liquid hydrogen (LH2) by ship two (2) alternatives of compressed hydrogen (cH2) by ship and two (2) alternatives of hydrogen by pipeline. The ship alternatives study having hydrogen storage media at both end terminals to reduce the ships’ time at port or prescinding of them and reduce the immobilized capital. In the case of the pipeline new models are proposed by considering pressure costs. One scenario considers that there are compression stations every 500 km and the other one considers that there are none along the way. These alternatives are assessed under nine different scenarios that combine three distances: 100 km 2500 km and 5000 km; and three export rates of hydrogen 100 kt/y 1 Mt/y and 10 Mt/y. The results show including uncertainty bands that for the 100 km of distance the best alternative is the pipeline. For 2500 km and 100 kt/y the top alternative is cH2 shipping without storage facilities at the port terminals. For 2500 km and 1 Mt/y and for 5000 km and 100 kt/y the best alternatives are cH2 or LH2 shipping. For the remaining scenarios the best alternative is LH2 shipping.
Finding Synergy Between Renewables and Coal: Flexible Power and Hydrogen Production from Advanced IGCC Plants with Integrated CO2 Capture

Variable renewable energy (VRE) has seen rapid growth in recent years. However VRE deployment requires a fleet of dispatchable power plants to supply electricity during periods with limited wind and sunlight. These plants will operate at reduced utilization rates that pose serious economic challenges. To address this challenge this paper presents the techno-economic assessment of flexible power and hydrogen production from integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC) employing the gas switching combustion (GSC) technology for CO2 capture and membrane assisted water gas shift (MAWGS) reactors for hydrogen production. Three GSC-MAWGS-IGCC plants are evaluated based on different gasification technologies: Shell High Temperature Winkler and GE. These advanced plants are compared to two benchmark IGCC plants one without and one with CO2 capture. All plants utilize state-of-the-art H-class gas turbines and hot gas clean-up for maximum efficiency. Under baseload operation the GSC plants returned CO2 avoidance costs in the range of 24.9–36.9 €/ton compared to 44.3 €/ton for the benchmark. However the major advantage of these plants is evident in the more realistic mid-load scenario. Due to the ability to keep operating and sell hydrogen to the market during times of abundant wind and sun the best GSC plants offer a 6–11%-point higher annual rate of return than the benchmark plant with CO2 capture. This large economic advantage shows that the flexible GSC plants are a promising option for balancing VRE provided a market for the generated clean hydrogen exists.
Sustainability Assessment of Green Ammonia Production to Promote Industrial Decarbonization in Spain

This article investigates the economic and environmental implications of implementing green ammonia production plants in Spain. To this end one business-as-usual scenario for gray ammonia production was compared with three green ammonia scenarios powered with different renewable energy sources (i.e. solar photovoltaic (PV) wind and a combination of solar PV and wind). The results illustrated that green ammonia scenarios reduced the environmental impacts in global warming stratospheric ozone depletion and fossil resource scarcity when compared with conventional gray ammonia scenario. Conversely green ammonia implementation increased the environmental impacts in the categories of land use mineral resource scarcity freshwater eutrophication and terrestrial acidification. The techno-economic analysis revealed that the conventional gray ammonia scenario featured lower costs than green ammonia scenarios when considering a moderate natural gas cost. However green ammonia implementation became the most economically favorable option when the natural gas cost and carbon prices increased. Finally the results showed that developing efficient ammonia-fueled systems is important to make green ammonia a relevant energy vector when considering the entire supply chain (production/transportation). Overall the results of this research demonstrate that green ammonia could play an important role in future decarbonization scenarios.
Critical Materials in PEMFC Systems and a LCA Analysis for the Potential Reduction of Environmental Impacts with EoL Strategies

Commonly used materials constituting the core components of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) including the balance‐of‐plant were classified according to the EU criticality methodology with an additional assessment of hazardousness and price. A life‐cycle assessment (LCA) of the materials potentially present in PEMFC systems was performed for 1 g of each material. To demonstrate the importance of appropriate actions at the end of life (EoL) for critical materials a LCA study of the whole life cycle for a 1‐kW PEMFC system and 20000 operating hours was performed. In addition to the manufacturing phase four different scenarios of hydrogen production were analyzed. In the EoL phase recycling was used as a primary strategy with energy extraction and landfill as the second and third. The environmental impacts for 1 g of material show that platinum group metals and precious metals have by far the largest environmental impact; therefore it is necessary to pay special attention to these materials in the EoL phase. The LCA results for the 1‐kW PEMFC system show that in the manufacturing phase the major environmental impacts come from the fuel cell stack where the majority of the critical materials are used. Analysis shows that only 0.75 g of platinum in the manufacturing phase contributes on average 60% of the total environmental impacts of the manufacturing phase. In the operating phase environmentally sounder scenarios are the hydrogen production with water electrolysis using hydroelectricity and natural gas reforming. These two scenarios have lower absolute values for the environmental impact indicators on average compared with the manufacturing phase of the 1‐kW PEMFC system. With proper recycling strategies in the EoL phase for each material and by paying a lot of attention to the critical materials the environmental impacts could be reduced on average by 37.3% for the manufacturing phase and 23.7% for the entire life cycle of the 1‐kW PEMFC system.
Batteries and Hydrogen Storage: Technical Analysis and Commercial Revision to Select the Best Option

This paper aims to analyse two energy storage methods—batteries and hydrogen storage technologies—that in some cases are treated as complementary technologies but in other ones they are considered opposed technologies. A detailed technical description of each technology will allow to understand the evolution of batteries and hydrogen storage technologies: batteries looking for higher energy capacity and lower maintenance while hydrogen storage technologies pursuing better volumetric and gravimetric densities. Additionally as energy storage systems a mathematical model is required to know the state of charge of the system. For this purpose a mathematical model is proposed for conventional batteries for compressed hydrogen tanks for liquid hydrogen storage and for metal hydride tanks which makes it possible to integrate energy storage systems into management strategies that aim to solve the energy balance in plants based on hybrid energy storage systems. From the technical point of view most batteries are easier to operate and do not require special operating conditions while hydrogen storage methods are currently functioning at the two extremes (high temperatures for metal and complex hydrides and low temperatures for liquid hydrogen or physisorption). Additionally the technical comparison made in this paper also includes research trends and future possibilities in an attempt to help plan future policies.
Bioinspired Hybrid Model to Predict the Hydrogen Inlet Fuel Cell Flow Change of an Energy Storage System

The present research work deals with prediction of hydrogen consumption of a fuel cell in an energy storage system. Due to the fact that these kind of systems have a very nonlinear behaviour the use of traditional techniques based on parametric models and other more sophisticated techniques such as soft computing methods seems not to be accurate enough to generate good models of the system under study. Due to that a hybrid intelligent system based on clustering and regression techniques has been developed and implemented to predict the necessary variation of the hydrogen flow consumption to satisfy the variation of demanded power to the fuel cell. In this research a hybrid intelligent model was created and validated over a dataset from a fuel cell energy storage system. Obtained results validate the proposal achieving better performance than other well-known classical regression methods allowing us to predict the hydrogen consumption with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 3.73 with the validation dataset.

In this review we want to explain how the burning of fossil fuels is pushing us towards green energy. Actually for a long time we have believed that everything is profitable that resources are unlimited and there are no consequences. However the reality is often disappointing. The use of non-renewable resources the excessive waste production and the abandonment of the task of recycling has created a fragile thread that once broken may never restore itself. Metaphors aside we are talking about our planet the Earth and its unique ability to host life including ourselves. Our world has its balance; when the wind erodes a mountain a beach appears or when a fire devastates an area eventually new life emerges from the ashes. However humans have been distorting this balance for decades. Our evolving way of living has increased the number of resources that each person consumes whether food shelter or energy; we have overworked everything to exhaustion. Scientists worldwide have already said actively and passively that we are facing one of the biggest problems ever: climate change. This is unsustainable and we must try to revert it or if we are too late slow it down as much as possible. To make this happen there are many possible methods. In this review we investigate catalysts for using water as an energy source or instead of water alcohols. On the other hand the recycling of gases such as CO2 and N2O is also addressed but we also observe non-catalytic means of generating energy through solar cell production.
Multi-vector Energy Management System including Scheduling Electrolyser, Electric Vehicle Charging Station and Other Assets in a Real Scenario

Today in the field of energy the main goal is to reduce emissions with 7 the aim of maintaining a clean environment. To reduce energy consumption 8 from fossil fuels new tools for micro-grids have been proposed. In the context 9 of multi-vector energy management systems the present work proposes an 10 optimal scheduler based on genetic algorithms to manage flexible assets in the 11 energy system such as energy storage and manageable demand. This tool is 12 applied to a case study for a Spanish technology park (360 kW consumption 13 peak) with photovoltaic and wind generation (735 kW generation peak) 14 hydrogen production (15 kW) and electric and fuel cell charging stations. 15 It provides an hourly day-ahead scheduling for the existing flexible assets: 16 the electrolyser the electric vehicle charging station the hydrogen refuelling 17 station and the heating ventilation and air conditioning system in one 18 building of the park. 19 A set of experiments is carried out over a period of 14 days using real 20 data and performing computations in real time in order to test and validate 21 the tool. The analysis of results show that the solution maximises the use of 22 local renewable energy production (demand is shifted to those hours when 23 there is a surplus of generation) which means a reduction in energy costs 24 whereas the computational cost allows the implementation of the tool in real 25 time.
Life Cycle Cost Analysis of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle that Employs Hydrogen Fuel Cell

The use of autonomous vehicles for marine and submarine work has risen considerably in the last decade. Developing new monitoring systems navigation and communications technologies allows a wide range of operational possibilities. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are being used in offshore missions and applications with some innovative purposes by using sustainable and green energy sources. This paper considers an AUV that uses a hydrogen fuel cell achieving zero emissions. This paper analyses the life cycle cost of the UAV and compares it with a UAV powered by conventional energy. The EN 60300-3-3 guidelines have been employed to develop the cost models. The output results show estimations for the net present value under different scenarios and financial strategies. The study has been completed with the discount rate sensibility analysis in terms of financial viability.
Opportunities for Low-carbon Generation and Storage Technologies to Decarbonise the Future Power System

Alternatives to cope with the challenges of high shares of renewable electricity in power systems have been addressed from different approaches such as energy storage and low-carbon technologies. However no model has previously considered integrating these technologies under stability requirements and different climate conditions. In this study we include this approach to analyse the role of new technologies to decarbonise the power system. The Spanish power system is modelled to provide insights for future applications in other regions. After including storage and low-carbon technologies (currently available and under development) batteries and hydrogen fuel cells have low penetration and the derived emission reduction is negligible in all scenarios. Compressed air storage would have a limited role in the short term but its performance improves in the long term. Flexible generation technologies based on hydrogen turbines and long-duration storage would allow the greatest decarbonisation providing stability and covering up to 11–14 % of demand in the short and long term. The hydrogen storage requirement is equivalent to 18 days of average demand (well below the theoretical storage potential in the region). When these solutions are considered decarbonising the electricity system (achieving Paris targets) is possible without a significant increase in system costs (< € 114/MWh).
Model Predictive Control of an Off-sire Green Hydrogen Production and Refuelling Station

The expected increase of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has motivated the emergence of a significant number of studies on Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS). Some of the main HRS topics are sizing location design optimization and optimal operation. On-site green HRS where hydrogen is produced locally from green renewable energy sources have received special attention due to their contribution to decarbonization. This kind of HRS are complex systems whose hydraulic and electric linked topologies include renewable energy sources electrolyzers buffer hydrogen tanks compressors and batteries among other components. This paper develops a linear model of a real on-site green HRS that is set to be built in Zaragoza Spain. This plant can produce hydrogen either from solar energy or from the utility grid and is designed for three different types of services: light-duty and heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles and gas containers. In the literature there is a lack of online control solutions developed for HRS even more in the form of optimal online control. Hence for the HRS operation a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is designed to solve a weighted multi-objective online optimization problem taking into account the plant dynamics and constraints as well as the disturbances prediction. Performance is analysed throughout 210 individual month-long simulations and the effect of the multi-objective weighting prediction horizon and hydrogen selling price is discussed. With the simulation results this work shows the suitability of MPC for HRS control and its significant economic advantage compared to the rule-based control solution. In all simulations the MPC operation fulfils all required services. Moreover results show that a seven-day prediction horizon can improve profits by 57% relative to a one-day prediction horizon; that the battery is under-sized; or that the MPC operation strategy is more resolutive for low hydrogen selling prices.
Recent Advances in Alkaline Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis and Electrode Manufacturing

Water electrolysis to obtain hydrogen in combination with intermittent renewable energy resources is an emerging sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Among the available electrolyzer technologies anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) has been paid much attention because of its advantageous behavior compared to other more traditional approaches such as solid oxide electrolyzer cells and alkaline or proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Recently very promising results have been obtained in the AEMWE technology. This review paper is focused on recent advances in membrane electrode assembly components paying particular attention to the preparation methods for catalyst coated on gas diffusion layers which has not been previously reported in the literature for this type of electrolyzers. The most successful methodologies utilized for the preparation of catalysts including co-precipitation electrodeposition sol–gel hydrothermal chemical vapor deposition atomic layer deposition ion beam sputtering and magnetron sputtering deposition techniques have been detailed. Besides a description of these procedures in this review we also present a critical appraisal of the efficiency of the water electrolysis carried out with cells fitted with electrodes prepared with these procedures. Based on this analysis a critical comparison of cell performance is carried out and future prospects and expected developments of the AEMWE are discussed.

Humankind has an urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Such a challenge requires deep transformation of the current energy system in our society. Achieving this goal has given an unprecedented role to decarbonized energy vectors. Electricity is the most consolidated of such vectors and a molecular vector is in the agenda to contribute in the future to those end uses that are difficult to electrify. Additionally energy storage is a critical issue for both energy vectors. In this communication discussion on the status hopes and perspectives of the hydrogen contribution to decarbonization are presented emphasizing bottlenecks in key aspects such as education reskilling and storage capacity and some concerns about the development of a flexible portfolio of technologies that could affect the contribution and impact of the whole hydrogen value chain in society. This communication would serve to the debate and boost discussion about the topic.
Solar Hydrogen Fuel Generation from Wastewater—Beyond Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: A Perspective

Green hydrogen—a carbon-free renewable fuel—has the capability to decarbonise a variety of sectors. The generation of green hydrogen is currently restricted to water electrolysers. The use of freshwater resources and critical raw materials however limits their use. Alternative water splitting methods for green hydrogen generation via photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) have been explored in the past few decades; however their commercial potential still remains unexploited due to the high hydrogen generation costs. Novel PEC-based simultaneous generation of green hydrogen and wastewater treatment/high-value product production is therefore seen as an alternative to conventional water splitting. Interestingly the organic/inorganic pollutants in wastewater and biomass favourably act as electron donors and facilitate the dual-functional process of recovering green hydrogen while oxidising the organic matter. The generation of green hydrogen through the dual-functional PEC process opens up opportunities for a “circular economy”. It further enables the end-of-life commodities to be reused recycled and resourced for a better life-cycle design while being economically viable for commercialisation. This review brings together and critically analyses the recent trends towards simultaneous wastewater treatment/biomass reforming while generating hydrogen gas by employing the PEC technology. We have briefly discussed the technical challenges associated with the tandem PEC process new avenues techno-economic feasibility and future directions towards achieving net neutrality.
Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles: Plotting a Scientific and Technological Knowledge Map

The fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) has been defined as a promising way to avoid road transport greenhouse emissions but nowadays they are not commercially available. However few studies have attempted to monitor the global scientific research and technological profile of FCEVs. For this reason scientific research and technological development in the field of FCEV from 1999 to 2019 have been researched using bibliometric and patent data analysis including network analysis. Based on reports the current status indicates that FCEV research topics have reached maturity. In addition the analysis reveals other important findings: (1) The USA is the most productive in science and patent jurisdiction; (2) both Chinese universities and their authors are the most productive in science; however technological development is led by Japanese car manufacturers; (3) in scientific research collaboration is located within the tri-polar world (North America–Europe–Asia-Pacific); nonetheless technological development is isolated to collaborations between companies of the same automotive group; (4) science is currently directing its efforts towards hydrogen production and storage energy management systems related to battery and hydrogen energy Life Cycle Assessment and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The technological development focuses on technologies related to electrically propelled vehicles; (5) the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy and SAE Technical Papers are the two most important sources of knowledge diffusion. This study concludes by outlining the knowledge map and directions for further research.
On Green Hydrogen Generation Technologies: A Bibliometric Review

Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis with renewable energy plays a crucial role in the revolution towards energy sustainability and it is considered a key source of clean energy and efficient storage. Its ability to address the intermittency of renewable sources and its potential to decarbonize sectors that are difficult to electrify make it a strategic component in climate change mitigation. By using a method based on a bibliometric review of scientific publications this paper represents a significant contribution to the emerging field of research on green hydrogen and provides a detailed review of electrolyzer technologies identifying key areas for future research and technology development. The results reflect the immaturity of a technology which advances with different technical advancements waiting to find the optimal technical solution that allows for its massive implementation as a source of green hydrogen generation. According to the results found in this article alkaline (ALK) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers seem to be the ones that interest the scientific community the most. Similarly in terms of regional analysis Europe is clearly committed to green hydrogen in view of the analysis of its scientific results on materials and electrolyzer capacity forecasts for 2030.
Future of Electric and Hydrogen Cars and Trucks: An Overview

The negative consequences of toxic emissions from internal combustion engines energy security climate change and energy costs have led to a growing demand for clean power sources in the automotive industry. The development of eco-friendly vehicle technologies such as electric and hydrogen vehicles has increased. This article investigates whether hydrogen vehicles will replace electric vehicles in the future. The results showed that fuel-cell cars are unlikely to compete with electric cars. This is due to the advancements in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure which are becoming more cost-effective and efficient. Additionally the technical progress in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is expected to reduce the market share of fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in passenger vehicles. However significant investments have been made in hydrogen cars. Many ongoing investments seem to follow the sunk cost fallacy where decision-makers continue to invest in an unprofitable project due to their already invested resources. Furthermore even with megawatt charging fuel-cell trucks cost more than battery-powered electric trucks. The use cases for fuel-cell electric trucks are also much more limited as their running expenses are higher compared to electric cars. Hydrogen vehicles may be beneficial for heavy transport in remote areas. However it remains to be seen if niche markets are large enough to support fuel-cell electric truck commercialization and economies of scale. In summary we believe that hydrogen vehicles will not replace electric cars and trucks at least before 2050.
Transition to a Low-carbon Building Stock. Techno-economic and Spatial Optimization of Renewables‑hydrogen Strategies in Spain

Europe has set ambitious targets to reduce the final energy consumption of buildings in concerning the degree of electrification energy efficiency and penetration of renewable energy sources (RES). So far hydrogen is becoming an increasingly important energy vector offering huge opportunities to promote the share of intermittent RES. Thus this manuscript proposes an energy model for the complete decarbonization of the estimated electricity consumed by the Spanish building stock in 2030 and 2050 scenarios; the model is based on the combination of photovoltaic and wind primary sources and hydrogen technologies considering both distributed and centralized configurations applying also geospatial criteria for their optimal allocation. Large-scale RES generation centralized hydrogen production and re-electrification along with underground hydrogen storage result in the lowest levelized cost of energy (LCOE) hydrogen production costs (HPC) and the highest overall efficiency (μSYS). Wind energy is mainly harvested in the north of Spain while large PV farms are deployed in the mid-south. Furthermore reinforcement of underground hydrogen storage enhances the overall system performance reducing surplus energy and the required RES generation capacity. Finally all the considered scenarios achieve LCOE below the Spanish utility grid benchmark apart from accomplishing the decarbonization goals established for the year 2030.
Analysis of Power to Gas Technologies for Energy Intensive Industries in European Union

Energy Intensive Industries (EII) are high users of energy and some of these facilities are extremely dependent on Natural Gas for processing heat production. In European countries where Natural Gas is mostly imported from external producers the increase in international Natural Gas prices is making it difficult for some industries to deliver the required financial results. Therefore they are facing complex challenges that could cause their delocalization in regions with lower energy costs. European countries lack on-site Natural Gas resources and the plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the industrial sector make it necessary to find an alternative. Many different processes cannot be electrified and in these cases synthetic methane is one of the solutions and also represents an opportunity to reduce external energy supply dependency. This study analyzes the current development of power-to-gas technological solutions that could be implemented in large industrial consumers to produce Synthetic Methane using Green Hydrogen as a raw source and using Renewable Energy electricity mainly produced with photovoltaic or wind energy. The study also reviews the triple bottom line impact and the current development status and associated costs for each key component of a power-to-gas plant and the requirements to be fulfilled in the coming years to develop a cost-competitive solution available for commercial use.
Comparative Sustainability Study of Energy Storage Technologies Using Data Envelopment Analysis

The transition to energy systems with a high share of renewable energy depends on the availability of technologies that can connect the physical distances or bridge the time differences between the energy supply and demand points. This study focuses on energy storage technologies due to their expected role in liberating the energy sector from fossil fuels and facilitating the penetration of intermittent renewable sources. The performance of 27 energy storage alternatives is compared considering sustainability aspects by means of data envelopment analysis. To this end storage alternatives are first classified into two clusters: fast-response and long-term. The levelized cost of energy energy and water consumption global warming potential and employment are common indicators considered for both clusters while energy density is used only for fast-response technologies where it plays a key role in technology selection. Flywheel reveals the highest efficiency between all the fast-response technologies while green ammonia powered with solar energy ranks first for long-term energy storage. An uncertainty analysis is incorporated to discuss the reliability of the results. Overall results obtained and guidelines provided can be helpful for both decision-making and research and development purposes. For the former we identify the most appealing energy storage options to be promoted while for the latter we report quantitative improvement targets that would make inefficient technologies competitive if attained. This contribution paves the way for more comprehensive studies in the context of energy storage by presenting a powerful framework for comparing options according to multiple sustainability indicators.
Three-dimensional Simulations of Lean H2-air Flames Propagating in a Narrow Gap: n the Validity of the Quasi-two-dimensional Appoximation

The premixed propagation of lean isobaric H2-air flames (φ = 0.3) in Hele-Shaw cells (i.e. two parallel plates separated by a small distance h on the order of the thickness of the planar adiabatic flame δf ∼ 3 mm) is investigated numerically. Three-dimensional (3D) simulations with detailed chemistry and transport are used to examine the effect of h on the flame dynamics and its overall normalized propagation speed (S T /S L) for a semi-closed system of size 25δf × 25δf × h. To determine the validity of an existing quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) formulation (derived in the limit of h → 0) to capture the 3D dynamics results for h = 0.1δf h = 0.5δf and h = δf are reported. For h = 0.1δf strong cell splitting/merging is observed with associated low frequency/high amplitude oscillations in the temporal evolution of S T /S L (10-17Hz; 6 ≤ S T /S L ≤ 10). Larger values of h exhibit a much smoother evolution. For h = 0.5δf the cell splitting/merging is milder relaxing to a steady propagating speed of S T /S L ∼ 6 after an initial transient; for h = 1δf the flame dynamics along the h direction starts to play an important role showing two distinct phases: (i) initial symmetric propagation with a linear increase in S T /S L (from 5.3 to 6.8) as early signs of asymmetry are visible (ii) followed by a fully non-symmetric propagation resulting in an abrupt increase in S T /S L that quickly relaxes to a constant value thereafter (S T /S L ∼ 10). Our preliminary results suggest that for the lean H2-air mixture considered the quasi-2D approximation breaks down for h > 0.1δf .
Hydrogen-powered Refrigeration System for Environmentally Friendly Transport and Delivery in the Food Supply Chain

Urban population and the trend towards online commerce leads to an increase in delivery solution in cities. The growth of the transport sector is very harmful to the environment being responsible for approximately 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. The problem is aggravated when transporting perishable foodstuffs as the vehicle propulsion engine (VPE) must power not only the vehicle but also the refrigeration unit. This means that the VPE must be running continuously both on the road and stationary (during delivery) as the cold chain must be preserved. The result is costly (high fuel consumption) and harmful to the environment. At present refrigerated transport does not support full-electric solutions due to the high energy consumption required which motivates the work presented in this article. It presents a turnkey solution of a hydrogen-powered refrigeration system (HPRS) to be integrated into standard light trucks and vans for short-distance food transport and delivery. The proposed solution combines an air-cooled polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) a lithium-ion battery and low-weight pressurised hydrogen cylinders to minimise cost and increase autonomy and energy density. In addition for its implementation and integration all the acquisition power and control electronics necessary for its correct management have been developed. Similarly an energy management system (EMS) has been developed to ensure continuity and safety in the operation of the electrical system during the working day while maximizing both the available output power and lifetime of the PEMFC. Experimental results on a real refrigerated light truck provide more than 4 h of autonomy in intensive intercity driving profiles which can be increased if necessary by simply increasing the pressure of the stored hydrogen from the current 200 bar to whatever is required. The correct operation of the entire HPRS has been experimentally validated in terms of functionality autonomy and safety; with fuel savings of more than 10% and more than 3650 kg of CO2/ year avoided.
Low Temperature Autoignition of Diesel Fuel Under Dual Operation with Hydrogen and Hydrogen-carriers

While electrification of light duty vehicles is becoming a real solution to abate local pollutant as well as greenhouse gases emission heavy duty applications (such as long distance freight and maritime transport) will keep requiring fuel-based propulsion systems. In these sectors dominated by compression ignition engines research on alternative biofuels and new combustion modes is still highly necessary. Dual-fuel combustion appears as a very promising concept to replace conventional diesel fuel by sustainable ones. Among the latter hydrogen-derived fuels (the so-called electrofuels or e-fuels) are maybe the most interesting. This work addresses the effect of partial substitution of diesel fuel by hydrogen and hydrogen-carriers (ammonia and methane) on the autoignition process under low temperature conditions. Tests were carried out in a constant volume combustion chamber at different temperatures (535 600 and 650 ◦C) and pressures (11 16 and 21 bar). While the cool flames timing and intensity was only slightly affected by the low reactivity fuel energy content the main ignition was delayed this effect being much more noticeable for ammonia followed by hydrogen and finally methane. Kinetic simulations showed a clear competition for active radicals between both fuels (diesel and low reactivity fuel). The combustion duration also increased with the hydrogen or hydrogen-carrier content which greatly points to the need of modifications in the injection strategy of compression ignition engines operating under dual mode. A correlation was proposed for estimating the autoignition delay time for dual-fuel lean combustion at low temperature.
Recent Insights into Low-Surface-Area Catalysts for Hydrogen Production from Ammonia

A potential method of storing and transporting hydrogen safely in a cost-effective and practical way involves the utilization of molecules that contain hydrogen in their structure such as ammonia. Because of its high hydrogen content and carbon-free molecular structure as well as the maturity of related technology (easy liquefaction) ammonia has gained attention as a “hydrogen carrier” for the generation of energy. Unfortunately hydrogen production from ammonia requires an efficient catalyst to achieve high conversion at low reaction temperatures. Recently very attractive results have been obtained with low-surface-area materials. This review paper is focused on summarizing and comparing recent advances in novel economic and active catalysts for this reaction paying particular attention to materials with low surface area such as silicon carbide (SiC) and perovskites (ABO3 structure). The effects of the supports the active phase and the addition of promoters in such low-porosity materials have been analyzed in detail. Advances in adequate catalytic systems (including support and active metal) benefit the perspective of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier for the decarbonization of the energy sector and accelerate the “hydrogen economy”.
Production of Hydrogen by Chemical Looping Reforming of Methane and Biogas using a Reactive and Durable Cu-based Oxygen Carrier

The objective of this work was to assess the suitability of a synthetic Cu-based oxygen carrier in a continuous pilot plant for the production of blue and green hydrogen through the autothermal Chemical Looping Reforming (CLRa). In CLRa methane is converted to a H2 + CO mixture through partial oxidation and reforming reactions in the fuel reactor. The degree of the partial oxidation of methane was defined by controlling the oxygen flow in the air reactor. Steam was used as reforming gas in natural gas to produce blue H2 but the existing CO2 in biogas was the reforming gas to produce green H2. Operating at 950 ◦C in the fuel and air reactors CH4 conversion and H2 yield parameters were 96 % and 2.60 mol of H2 per mole of CH4 respectively. These experimental results were close to the theoretical values that could be achieved in the CLRa process. Furthermore the physico-chemical characterization of the samples extracted from the pilot plant throughout the experimental campaign revealed that the Cu-based oxygen carrier maintained its mechanical integrity and chemical stability under harsh operating conditions. Therefore it can be concluded that Cu-based oxygen carriers can be considered a promising alternative to Ni-based materials for the production of blue and green hydrogen through the CLRa process.
The Role of the Testing Rate on Small Punch Tests for the Estimation of Fracture Toughness in Hydrogen Embrittlement

In this paper different techniques to test notched Small Punch (SPT) samples in fracture conditions in aggressive environments are studied based on the comparison of the micromechanisms at different rates. Pre-embrittled samples subsequently tested in air at rates conventionally employed (0.01 and 0.002 mm/s) are compared to embrittled ones tested in environment at the same rates (0.01 and 0.002 mm/s) and at a very slow rate (5E-5 mm/s). A set of samples tested in environment under a set of constant loads that produce very slow rates completes the experimental results. As a conclusion it is recommended to test SPT notched specimens in environment at very slow rates of around E-6 mm/s when characterizing in Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) scenarios in order to allow the interaction material-environment to govern the process.
Environmentally Assisted Cracking Behavior of S420 and X80 Steels Containing U-notches at Two Different Cathodic Polarization Levels: An Approach from the Theory of Critical Distances

This paper analyzes using the theory of critical distances the environmentally assisted cracking behaviour of two steels (S420 and API X80) subjected to two different aggressive environments. The propagation threshold for environmentally assisted cracking (i.e. the stress intensity factor above which crack propagation initiates) in cracked and notched specimens (KIEAC and KNIEAC) has been experimentally obtained under different environmental conditions. Cathodic polarization has been employed to generate the aggressive environments at 1 and 5 mA/cm2 causing hydrogen embrittlement on the steels. The point method and the line method both belonging to the theory of critical distances have been applied to verify their capacity to predict the initiation of crack propagation. The results demonstrate the capacity of the theory of critical distances to predict the crack propagation onset under the different combinations of material and aggressive environments.
Hydrogen Embrittlement and Notch Tensile Strength of Pearlitic Steel: A Numerical Approach

This paper offers a numerical approach to the problem of hydrogen embrittlement and notch tensile strength of sharply notched specimens of high-strength pearlitic steel supplied in the form of hot rolled bars by using the finite element method in order to determine how the notch depth influences the concentration of hydrogen in the steady-state regime for different loading values. Numerical results show that the point of maximum hydrostatic stress (towards which hydrogen is transported by a mechanism of stress-assisted diffusion) shifts from the notch tip to the inner points of the specimen under increasing load with numerical evidence of an elevated inwards gradient of hydrostatic stress “pumping” hydrogen inside the sample.
Opportunities and Barriers of Hydrogen–Electric Hybrid Powertrain Vans: A Systematic Literature Review

The environmental impact of the road transport sector together with urban freight transport growth has a notable repercussions in global warming health and economy. The need to reduce emissions caused by fossil fuel dependence and to foster the use of renewable energy sources has driven the development of zero-emissions powertrains. These clean transportation technologies are not only necessary to move people but to transport the increasing demand for goods and services that is currently taking place in the larger cities. Full electric battery-powered vans seem to be the best-placed solution to the problem. However despite the progress in driving range and recharge options those and other market barriers remain unsolved and the current market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is not significant. Based on the development of hydrogen fuel cell stacks this work explains an emerging powertrain architecture concept for N1 class type vans that combines a battery-electric configuration with a fuel cell stack powered by hydrogen that works as a range extender (FC-EREV). A literature review is conducted with the aim to shed light on the possibilities of this hybrid light-duty commercial van for metropolitan delivery tasks providing insights into the key factors and issues for sizing the powertrain components and fuel management strategies to meet metropolitan freight fleet needs.
Hydrogen Permeation Studies of Composite Supported Alumina-carbon Molecular Sieves Membranes: Separation of Diluted Hydrogen from Mixtures with Methane

One alternative for the storage and transport of hydrogen is blending a low amount of hydrogen (up to 15 or 20%) into existing natural gas grids. When demanded hydrogen can be then separated close to the end users using membranes. In this work composite alumina carbon molecular sieves membranes (Al-CMSM) supported on tubular porous alumina have been prepared and characterized. Single gas permeation studies showed that the H2/CH4 separation properties at 30 °C are well above the Robeson limit of polymeric membranes. H2 permeation studies of the H2–CH4 mixture gases containing 5–20% of H2 show that the H2 purity depends on the H2 content in the feed and the operating temperature. In the best scenario investigated in this work for samples containing 10% of H2 with an inlet pressure of 7.5 bar and permeated pressure of 0.01 bar at 30 °C the H2 purity obtained was 99.4%.
An Autonomous Device for Solar Hydrogen Production from Sea Water

Hydrogen production from water electrolysis is one of the most promising approaches for the production of green H2 a fundamental asset for the decarbonization of the energy cycle and industrial processes. Seawater is the most abundant water source on Earth and it should be the feedstock for these new technologies. However commercial electrolyzers still need ultrapure water. The debate over the advantages and disadvantages of direct sea water electrolysis when compared with the implementation of a distillation/purification process before the electrolysis stage is building in the relevant research. However this debate will remain open for some time essentially because there are no seawater electrolyser technologies with which to compare the modular approach. In this study we attempted to build and validate an autonomous sea water electrolyzer able to produce high-purity green hydrogen (>90%) from seawater. We were able to solve most of the problems that natural seawater electrolyses imposes (high corrosion impurities etc.) with decisions based on simplicity and sustainability and those issues that are yet to be overcome were rationally discussed in view of future electrolyzer designs. Even though the performance we achieved may still be far from industrial standards our results demonstrate that direct seawater electrolysis with a solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of ≈7% can be achieved with common low-cost materials and affordable fabrication methods.
Perspectives on Cathodes for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are promising electrochemical devices for the efficient and clean conversion of hydrogen and low hydrocarbons into electrical energy. Their intermediate operation temperature (500–800 °C) proffers advantages in terms of greater component compatibility unnecessity of expensive noble metals for the electrocatalyst and no dilution of the fuel electrode due to water formation. Nevertheless the lower operating temperature in comparison to classic solid oxide fuel cells places significant demands on the cathode as the reaction kinetics are slower than those related to fuel oxidation in the anode or ion migration in the electrolyte. Cathode design and composition are therefore of crucial importance for the cell performance at low temperature. The different approaches that have been adopted for cathode materials research can be broadly classified into the categories of protonic–electronic conductors oxide-ionic–electronic conductors triple-conducting oxides and composite electrodes composed of oxides from two of the other categories. Here we review the relatively short history of PCFC cathode research discussing trends highlights and recent progress. Current understanding of reaction mechanisms is also discussed.
Direct Route from Ethanol to Pure Hydrogen through Autothermal Reforming in a Membrane Reactor: Experimental Demonstration, Reactor Modelling and Design

This work reports the integration of thin (~3e4 mm thick) Pd-based membranes for H2 separation in a fluidized bed catalytic reactor for ethanol auto-thermal reforming. The performance of a fluidized bed membrane reactor has been investigated from an experimental and numerical point of view. The demonstration of the technology has been carried out over 50 h under reactive conditions using 5 thin Pd-based alumina-supported membranes and a 3 wt%Pt-10 wt%Ni catalyst deposited on a mixed CeO2/SiO2 support. The results have confirmed the feasibility of the concept in particular the capacity to reach a hydrogen recovery factor up to 70% while the operation at different fluidization regimes oxygen-to-ethanol and steam-to-ethanol ratios feed pressures and reactor temperatures have been studied. The most critical part of the system is the sealing of the membranes where most of the gas leakage was detected. A fluidized bed membrane reactor model for ethanol reforming has been developed and validated with the obtained experimental results. The model has been subsequently used to design a small reactor unit for domestic use showing that 0.45 m2 membrane area is needed to produce the amount of H2 required for a 5 kWe PEM fuel-cell based micro-CHP system.
Use of Hydrogen in Off-Grid Locations, a Techno-Economic Assessment

Diesel generators are currently used as an off-grid solution for backup power but this causes CO2 and GHG emissions noise emissions and the negative effects of the volatile diesel market influencing operating costs. Green hydrogen production by means of water electrolysis has been proposed as a feasible solution to fill the gaps between demand and production the main handicaps of using exclusively renewable energy in isolated applications. This manuscript presents a business case of an off-grid hydrogen production by electrolysis applied to the electrification of isolated sites. This study is part of the European Ely4off project (n◦ 700359). Under certain techno-economic hypothesis four different system configurations supplied exclusively by photovoltaic are compared to find the optimal Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE): photovoltaic-batteries photovoltaic-hydrogen-batteries photovoltaic-diesel generator and diesel generator; the influence of the location and the impact of different consumptions profiles is explored. Several simulations developed through specific modeling software are carried out and discussed. The main finding is that diesel-based systems still allow lower costs than any other solution although hydrogen-based solutions can compete with other technologies under certain conditions.
New Combustion Modelling Approach for Methane-Hydrogen Fueled Engines Using Machine Learning and Engine Virtualization

The achievement of a carbon-free emissions economy is one of the main goals to reduce climate change and its negative effects. Scientists and technological improvements have followed this trend improving efficiency and reducing carbon and other compounds that foment climate change. Since the main contributor of these emissions is transportation detaching this sector from fossil fuels is a necessary step towards an environmentally friendly future. Therefore an evaluation of alternative fuels will be needed to find a suitable replacement for traditional fossil-based fuels. In this scenario hydrogen appears as a possible solution. However the existence of the drawbacks associated with the application of H2 -ICE redirects the solution to dual-fuel strategies which consist of mixing different fuels to reduce negative aspects of their separate use while enhancing the benefits. In this work a new combustion modelling approach based on machine learning (ML) modeling is proposed for predicting the burning rate of different mixtures of methane (CH4 ) and hydrogen (H2). Laminar flame speed calculations have been performed to train the ML model finding a faster way to obtain good results in comparison with actual models applied to SI engines in the virtual engine model framework.
Hydrogen-assisted Fatigue Crack Growth: Pre-charging vs In-situ Testing in Gaseous Environments

We investigate the implications of conducting hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth experiments in a hydrogen gas environment (in-situ hydrogen charging) or in air (following exposure to hydrogen gas). The study is conducted on welded 42CrMo4 steel a primary candidate for the future hydrogen transport infrastructure allowing us to additionally gain insight into the differences in behavior between the base steel and the coarse grain heat affected zone. The results reveal significant differences between the two testing approaches and the two weld regions. The differences are particularly remarkable for the comparison of testing methodologies with fatigue crack growth rates being more than one order of magnitude higher over relevant loading regimes when the samples are tested in a hydrogen-containing environment relative to the pre-charged samples. Aided by finite element modelling and microscopy analysis these differences are discussed and rationalized. Independent of the testing approach the heat affected zone showed a higher susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. Similar microstructural behavior is observed for both testing approaches with the base metal exhibiting martensite lath decohesion while the heat affected zone experienced both martensite lath decohesion and intergranular fracture.

This paper deals with notch-induced anisotropic fracture behavior of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels on the basis of their microstructural evolution during manufacturing by multi-step cold drawing that produces slenderizing and orientation of the pearlitic colonies together with densification and orientation of the Fe/Fe3C lamellae reviewing previous research by the author. Results of fracture test using notched specimens of cold drawn pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing (distinct levels of strain hardening) in air and hydrogen environment shows: (i) the key impact of the colonies and lamellae alignment and orientation on notch-induced fracture producing anisotropic fracture behavior with its related crack path deflection (or fracture path deviation); (ii) the necessity of both stress triaxiality (constraint) and microstructural orientation (colonies/lamellae) alignment to produce fracture path deflection; (iii) hydrogen presence (the circumstance) promotes crack path deviation in addition to the inherent microstructural anisotropy created by cold drawing; (iv) the anisotropic fracture path with a stepped profile in cold drawn pearlitic steel consisting of deflections and deviations from the initial transverse fracture path in mode I resembles Masaccio’s Tribute Money painting with its mountains at the background so that the present paper can be considered as a Tribute to Masaccio.
Analysis of the Environmental Degradation Effects on the Cables of “La Arena” Bridge (Spain)

After nearly 25 years of service some of the wires of the tendons of “La Arena” bridge (Spain) started to exhibit the effects of environmental degradation processes. “La Arena” is cable-stayed bridge with 6 towers and a reference span between towers of about 100 meters. After a maintenance inspection of the bridge evidences of corrosion were detected in some of the galvanized wires of the cables. A more in-deep analysis of these wires revealed that many of them exhibited loss of section due to the corrosion process. In order to clarify the causes of this degradation event and to suggest some remedial actions an experimental program was designed. This program consisted of tensile and fatigue tests on some strand samples of the bridge together with a fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces of the wires its galvanized layer thickness and some hydrogen measurements (hydrogen embrittlement could be another effect of the environmental degradation process).Once the type and extension of the flaws in the wires was characterized a structural integrity assessment of the strands was performed with the aim of quantifying the margins until failure and establishing some maintenance recommendations.
Resilience-oriented Schedule of Microgrids with Hybrid Energy Storage System using Model Predictive Control

Microgrids can be regarded as a promising solution by which to increase the resilience of power systems in an energy paradigm based on renewable generation. Their main advantage is their ability to work as islanded systems under power grid outage conditions. Microgrids are usually integrated into electrical markets whose schedules are carried out according to economic aspects while resilience criteria are ignored. This paper shows the development of a resilience-oriented optimization for microgrids with hybrid Energy Storage System (ESS) which is validated via numerical simulations. A hybrid ESS composed of hydrogen and batteries is therefore considered with the objective of improving the autonomy of the microgrid while achieving a rapid transition response. The control problem is formulated using Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) techniques in order to take into account possible transitions between grid-connected and islanded modes at all the sample instants of the schedule horizon (SH). The control problem is developed by considering a healthy operation of the hybrid ESS thus avoiding degradation issues. The plant is modeled using the Mixed Logic Dynamic (MLD) framework owing to the presence of logic and dynamic control variables.
A Unified European Hydrogen Infrastructure Planning to Support the Rapid Scale-up of Hydrogen Production

Hydrogen will become a key player in transitioning toward a net-zero energy system. However a clear pathway toward a unified European hydrogen infrastructure to support the rapid scale-up of hydrogen production is still under discussion. This study explores plausible pathways using a fully sector-coupled energy system model. Here we assess the emergence of hydrogen infrastructure build-outs connecting neighboring European nations through hydrogen import and domestic production centers with Western and Central European demands via four distinct hydrogen corridors. We identify a potential lock-in effect of blue hydrogen in the medium term highlighting the risk of longterm dependence on methane. In contrast we show that a self-sufficient Europe relying on domestic green hydrogen by 2050 would increase yearly expenses by around 3% and require 518 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity. This study emphasizes the importance of rapidly scaling up electrolysis capacity building hydrogen networks and storage facilities deploying renewable electricity generation and ensuring coherent coordination across European nations.
Optimal Dispatch Model for PV-electrolysis Plants in Self-consumption Regime to Produce Green Hydrogen: A Spanish Case Study

The production of green hydrogen from renewable energy by means of water electrolysis is a promising approach to support energy sector decarbonization. This paper presents a techno-economic model of plants with PV sources connected to electrolysis in self-consumption regime that considers the dynamics of electrolysis systems. The model calculates the optimal hourly dispatch of the electrolysis system including the operational states (production standby and idle) the load factor in production and the energy imports and exports to the electricity grid. Results indicate that the model is a useful decision support tool to operate electrolysis plants connected to PV plants in self-consumption regimes with the target of reducing hydrogen production costs.
Integration of Hydrogen and Synthetic Natural Gas within Legacy Power Generation Facilities

Whilst various new technologies for power generation are continuously being evaluated the owners of almost-new facilities such as combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants remain motivated to adapt these to new circumstances and avoid the balance-sheet financial impairments of underutilization. Not only are the owners reluctant to decommission the legacy CCGT assets but system operators value the inertia and flexibilities they contribute to a system becoming predominated with renewable generation. This analysis therefore focuses on the reinvestment cases for adapting CCGT to hydrogen (H2 ) synthetic natural gas (SNG) and/or retrofitted carbon capture and utilization systems (CCUS). Although H2 either by itself or as part of SNG has been evaluated attractively for longer-term electricity storage the business case for how it can be part of a hybrid legacy CCGT system has not been analyzed in a market context. This work compares the power to synthetic natural gas to power (PSNGP) adaptation with the simpler and less expensive power to hydrogen to power (P2HP) adaptation. Both the P2HP and PSNGP configurations are effective in terms of decarbonizations. The best results of the feasibility analysis for a UK application with low CCGT load factors (around 31%) were obtained for 100% H2 (P2HP) in the lower range of wholesale electricity prices (less than 178 GBP/MWh) but in the higher range of prices it would be preferable to use the PSNGP configuration with a low proportion of SNG (25%). If the CCGT load factor increased to 55% (the medium scenario) the breakeven profitability point between P2HP and PSNGP decreased to a market price of 145 GBP/MWh. Alternatively with the higher load factors (above 77%) satisfactory results were obtained for PSNGP using 50% SNG if with market prices above 185 GBP/MWh.
Green Hydrogen Storage in an Underground Cavern: A Case Study in Salt Diapir of Spain

The Poza de la Sal diapir is a closed circular depression with Cretaceous Mesozoic materials formed by gypsum Keuper clays and a large extension of salt in the center with intercalations of ophite. The low seismic activity of the area the reduced permeability and porosity of the salt caverns and the proximity to the Páramo de Poza wind park make it a suitable place for the construction of a facility for underground storage of green hydrogen obtained from surplus wind power. The design of a cavern for hydrogen storage at a depth of 1000 m takes into account the differences in stresses temperatures and confining pressures involved in the salt deformation process. During the 8 months of the injection phase 23.0 GWh can be stored in the form of hydrogen obtained from the wind energy surplus to be used later in the extraction phase. The injection and extraction ratio must be developed under the conditions of geomechanical safety of the cavity so as to minimize the risks to the environment and people by conditioning the gas pressure inside the cavity to remain within a given range.
Hydrogen Assisted Cracking in Pearlitic Steel Rods: The Role of Residual Stresses Generated by Fatigue Precracking

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of metals is an issue of major concern in engineering since this phenomenon causes many catastrophic failures of structural components in aggressive environments. SCC is even more harmful under cathodic conditions promoting the phenomenon known as hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) hydrogen assisted fracture (HAF) or hydrogen embrittlement (HE). A common way to assess the susceptibility of a given material to HAC HAF or HE is to subject a cracked rod to a constant extension rate tension (CERT) test until it fractures in this harsh environment. This paper analyzes the influence of a residual stress field generated by fatigue precracking on the sample’s posterior susceptibility to HAC. To achieve this goal numerical simulations were carried out of hydrogen diffusion assisted by the stress field. Firstly a mechanical simulation of the fatigue precracking was developed for revealing the residual stress field after diverse cyclic loading scenarios and posterior stress field evolution during CERT loading. Afterwards a simulation of hydrogen diffusion assisted by stress was carried out considering the residual stresses after fatigue and the superposed rising stresses caused by CERT loading. Results reveal the key role of the residual stress field after fatigue precracking in the HAC phenomena in cracked steel rods as well as the beneficial effect of compressive residual stress.
Analysis of Environmentally Assisted Cracking Processes in Notched Steels Using the Point Method

This paper proposes the use of the Point Method (PM) to analyse Environmentally Assisted Cracking (EAC) processes in steels containing U-shaped notches. The PM a methodology included within the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) has been extensively validated by many authors for the analysis of fracture and fatigue phenomena of different types of materials containing notches. However it has never been applied to other critical or subcritical cracking processes such as EAC or creep crack propagation.<br/>This work provides a PM-based analysis of EAC emanating from notches which is validated by testing CT notched specimens of X80 and S420 steels subjected to aggressive environments under hydrogen embrittlement conditions.<br/>The results reveal that the PM accurately predicts the crack propagation onset condition as well as the evolution of the material’s apparent EAC resistance.
A Novel Self-Assembly Strategy for the Fabrication of Nano-Hybrid Satellite Materials with Plasmonically Enhanced Catalytic Activity

The generation of hydrogen from water using light is currently one of the most promising alternative energy sources for humankind but faces significant barriers for large-scale applications due to the low efficiency of existing photo-catalysts. In this work we propose a new route to fabricate nano-hybrid materials able to deliver enhanced photo-catalytic hydrogen evolution combining within the same nanostructure a plasmonic antenna nanoparticle and semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). For each stage of our fabrication process we probed the chemical composition of the materials with nanometric spatial resolution allowing us to demonstrate that the final product is composed of a silver nanoparticle (AgNP) plasmonic core surrounded by satellite Pt decorated CdS QDs (CdS@Pt) separated by a spacer layer of SiO2 with well-controlled thickness. This new type of photoactive nanomaterial is capable of generating hydrogen when irradiated with visible light displaying efficiencies 300% higher than the constituting photo-active components. This work may open new avenues for the development of cleaner and more efficient energy sources based on photo-activated hydrogen generation.
Influence of Microstructural Anisotropy on the Hydrogen-assisted Fracture of Notched Samples of Progressively Drawn Pearlitic Steel

In this study fracture surfaces of notched specimens of pearlitic steels subjected to constant extension rate tests (CERTs) are analyzed in an environment causing hydrogen assisted fracture. In order to obtain general results both different notched geometries (to generate quite distinct stress triaxiality distributions in the vicinity of the notch tip) and diverse loading rates were used. The fracture surfaces were classified in relation to four micromechanical models of hydrogen-assisted micro-damage. To this end fractographic analysis in each fracture surface was carried out with a scanning electron microscopy. Generated results increase the number of micromechanical models found in the scientific literature.
Evaluation of Strength and Fracture Toughness of Ferritic High Strength Steels Under Hydrogen Environments

The susceptibility of high strength ferritic steels to hydrogen-assisted fracture in hydrogen gas is usually evaluated by mechanical testing in high-pressure hydrogen gas or testing in air after pre-charging the specimens with hydrogen. We have used this second methodology conventionally known as internal hydrogen. Samples were pre-charged in an autoclave under 195 bar of pure hydrogen at 450ºC for 21 hours.<br/>Different chromium-molybdenum steels submitted to diverse quenching and tempering heat treatments were employed. Diverse specimens were also used: small cylindrical samples to measure hydrogen contents and the kinetics of hydrogen egression at room temperature tensile specimens notched tensile specimens with a sharp notch and also compact fracture toughness specimens. Fractographic examination in SEM was finally performed in order to know the way hydrogen modify fracture micromechanisms.<br/>The presence of hydrogen barely affects the conventional tensile properties of the steels but it clearly alters their notched tensile strength and fracture toughness. This is due to the strong effect that stress triaxiality (dependent also on the steel yield strength) has on the accumulation of hydrogen on the notch/crack front region being the displacement rate used in the test another important variable to be controlled due to its influence on hydrogen diffusion to the embrittled process zone. Moreover the modification of fracture micromechanisms was finally determined being ductile (initiation growth and coalescence of microvoids) in the absence of hydrogen and brittle and intergranular under the material conditions of maximum embrittlement.
Techno-Economics Optimization of H2 and CO2 Compression for Renewable Energy Storage and Power-to-Gas Applications

The decarbonization of the industrial sector is imperative to achieve a sustainable future. Carbon capture and storage technologies are the leading options but lately the use of CO2 is also being considered as a very attractive alternative that approaches a circular economy. In this regard power to gas is a promising option to take advantage of renewable H2 by converting it together with the captured CO2 into renewable gases in particular renewable methane. As renewable energy production or the mismatch between renewable production and consumption is not constant it is essential to store renewable H2 or CO2 to properly run a methanation installation and produce renewable gas. This work analyses and optimizes the system layout and storage pressure and presents an annual cost (including CAPEX and OPEX) minimization. Results show the proper compression stages need to achieve the storage pressure that minimizes the system cost. This pressure is just below the supercritical pressure for CO2 and at lower pressures for H2 around 67 bar. This last quantity is in agreement with the usual pressures to store and distribute natural gas. Moreover the H2 storage costs are higher than that of CO2 even with lower mass quantities; this is due to the lower H2 density compared with CO2 . Finally it is concluded that the compressor costs are the most relevant costs for CO2 compression but the storage tank costs are the most relevant in the case of H2.
Absence of Spillover of Hydrogen Adsorbed on Small Palladium Clusters Anchored to Graphene Vacancies

Experimental evidence exists for the enhancement of the hydrogen storage capacity of porous carbons when these materials are doped with metal nanoparticles. One of the most studied dopants is palladium. Dissociation of the hydrogen molecules and spillover of the H atoms towards the carbon substrate has been advocated as the reason for the enhancement of the storage capacity. We have investigated this mechanism by performing ab initio density functional molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the deposition of molecular hydrogen on Pd6 clusters anchored on graphene vacancies. The clusters are initially near-saturated with atomic and molecular hydrogen. This condition would facilitate the occurrence of spillover since our energy calculations based on density functional theory indicate that migration of preadsorbed H atoms towards the graphene substrate becomes exothermic on Pd clusters with high hydrogen coverages. However AIMD simulations show that the H atoms prefer to intercalate and absorb within the Pd cluster rather than migrate to the carbon substrate. These results reveal that high activation barriers exist preventing the spillover of hydrogen from the anchored Pd clusters to the carbon substrate.
Spin Pinning Effect to Reconstructed Oxyhydroxide Layer on Ferromagnetic Oxides for Enhanced Water Oxidation

Producing hydrogen by water electrolysis suffers from the kinetic barriers in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) that limits the overall efficiency. With spin-dependent kinetics in OER to manipulate the spin ordering of ferromagnetic OER catalysts (e.g. by magnetization) can reduce the kinetic barrier. However most active OER catalysts are not ferromagnetic which makes the spin manipulation challenging. In this work we report a strategy with spin pinning effect to make the spins in paramagnetic oxyhydroxides more aligned for higher intrinsic OER activity. The spin pinning effect is established in oxideFM/oxyhydroxide interface which is realized by a controlled surface reconstruction of ferromagnetic oxides. Under spin pinning simple magnetization further increases the spin alignment and thus the OER activity which validates the spin effect in rate-limiting OER step. The spin polarization in OER highly relies on oxyl radicals (O∙) created by 1st dehydrogenation to reduce the barrier for subsequent O-O coupling.
Optimal Energy Management System Using Biogeography Based Optimization for Grid-connected MVDC Microgrid with Photovoltaic, Hydrogen System, Electric Vehicles and Z-source Converters

Currently the technology associated with charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) needs to be studied and improved to further encourage its implementation. This paper presents a new energy management system (EMS) based on a Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO) algorithm for a hybrid EV charging station with a configuration that integrates Z-source converters (ZSC) into medium voltage direct current (MVDC) grids. The EMS uses the evolutionary BBO algorithm to optimize a fitness function defining the equivalent hydrogen consumption/generation. The charging station consists of a photovoltaic (PV) system a local grid connection two fast charging units and two energy storage systems (ESS) a battery energy storage (BES) and a complete hydrogen system with fuel cell (FC) electrolyzer (LZ) and hydrogen tank. Through the use of the BBO algorithm the EMS manages the energy flow among the components to keep the power balance in the system reducing the equivalent hydrogen consumption and optimizing the equivalent hydrogen generation. The EMS and the configuration of the charging station based on ZSCs are the main contributions of the paper. The behaviour of the EMS is demonstrated with three EV connected to the charging station under different conditions of sun irradiance. In addition the proposed EMS is compared with a simpler EMS for the optimal management of ESS in hybrid configurations. The simulation results show that the proposed EMS achieves a notable improvement in the equivalent hydrogen consumption/generation with respect to the simpler EMS. Thanks to the proposed configuration the output voltage of the components can be upgraded to MVDC while reducing the number of power converters compared with other configurations without ZSC.
Flammability Reduction in a Pressurised Water Electrolyser Based on a Thin Polymer Electrolyte Membrane through a Pt-alloy Catalytic Approach

Various Pt-based materials (unsupported Pt PtRu PtCo) were investigated as catalysts for recombining hydrogen and oxygen back into water. The recombination performance correlated well with the surface Pt metallic state. Alloying cobalt to platinum was observed to produce an electron transfer favouring the occurrence of a large fraction of the Pt metallic state on the catalyst surface. Unsupported PtCo showed both excellent recombination performance and dynamic behaviour. In a packed bed catalytic reactor when hydrogen was fed at 4% vol. in the oxygen stream (flammability limit) 99.5% of the total H2 content was immediately converted to water in the presence of PtCo thus avoiding safety issues. The PtCo catalyst was thus integrated in the anode of the membrane-electrode assembly of a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis cell. This catalyst showed good capability to reduce the concentration of hydrogen in the oxygen stream under differential pressure operation (1–20 bar) in the presence of a thin (90 μm) Aquivion® membrane. The modified system showed lower hydrogen concentration in the oxygen flow than electrolysis cells based on state-of-the-art thick polymer electrolyte membranes and allowed to expand the minimum current density load down to 0.15 A cm−2 . This was mainly due to the electrochemical oxidation of permeated H2 to protons that were transported back to the cathode. The electrolysis cell equipped with a dual layer PtCo/IrRuOx oxidation catalyst achieved a high operating current density (3 A cm−2 ) as requested to decrease the system capital costs under high efficiency conditions (about 77% efficiency at 55 °C and 20 bar). Moreover the electrolysis system showed reduced probability to reach the flammability limit under both high differential pressure (20 bar) and partial load operation (5%) as needed to properly address grid-balancing service
Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution Assisted by Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous organic polymers built from covalent organic blocks that can be photochemically active when incorporating organic semiconducting units such as triazine rings or diacetylene bridges. The bandgap charge separation capacity porosity wettability and chemical stability of COFs can be tuned by properly choosing their constitutive building blocks by extension of conjugation by adjustment of the size and crystallinity of the pores and by synthetic post-functionalization. This review focuses on the recent uses of COFs as photoactive platforms for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in which usually metal nanoparticles (NPs) or metallic compounds (generally Pt-based) act as co-catalysts. The most promising COF-based photocatalytic HER systems will be discussed and special emphasis will be placed on rationalizing their structure and light-harvesting properties in relation to their catalytic activity and stability under turnover conditions. Finally the aspects that need to be improved in the coming years will be discussed such as the degree of dispersibility in water the global photocatalytic efficiency and the robustness and stability of the hybrid systems putting emphasis on both the COF and the metal co-catalyst.
Hydrogen vs. Battery-Based Propulsion Systems in Unipersonal Vehicles—Developing Solutions to Improve the Sustainability of Urban Mobility

The percentage of the population in urban areas has increased by ten points from 2000 (46%) to 2020 (56%); it is expected to reach up to 70% by 2050. This undoubtedly will encourage society to use alternative transports. On the other hand the widespread fear of pandemics seems to be here to stay and it is causing most people to leave public transport to use private cars and a few have chosen unipersonal electric vehicles. As a consequence the decision of using private cars negatively affects the air quality and consequently urban population health. This paper aims to demonstrate a sustainable solution for urban mobility based on a hydrogen powered unipersonal electric vehicle which as shown provides great advantages over the conventional battery powered unipersonal electric vehicle. To show this the authors have developed both vehicles in comparable versions using the same platform and ensuring that the total weight of the unipersonal electric vehicle was the same in both cases. They have been subjected to experimental tests that support the features of the hydrogen-based configuration versus the battery-based one including higher specific energy more autonomy and shorter recharge time.
Life Cycle Assessment of Improved High Pressure Alkaline Electrolysis

This paper investigates environmental impacts of high pressure alkaline water electrolysis systems. An advanced system with membranes on polymer basis is compared to a state-of-the-art system with asbestos membranes using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. For the advanced system a new improved membrane technology has been investigated within the EU research project “ELYGRID”. Results indicate that most environmental impacts are caused by the electricity supply necessary for operation. During the construction phase cell stacks are the main contributor to environmental impacts. New improved membranes have relatively small contributions to impacts caused by cell construction within the advanced systems. As main outcome the systems comparison illustrates a better ecological performance of the new developed system
Life Cycle Environmental and Cost Comparison of Current and Future Passenger Cars under Different Energy Scenarios

In this analysis life cycle environmental burdens and total costs of ownership (TCO) of current (2017) and future (2040) passenger cars with different powertrain configurations are compared. For all vehicle configurations probability distributions are defined for all performance parameters. Using these a Monte Carlo based global sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the input parameters that contribute most to overall variability of results. To capture the systematic effects of the energy transition future electricity scenarios are deeply integrated into the ecoinvent life cycle assessment background database. With this integration not only the way how future electric vehicles are charged is captured but also how future vehicles and batteries are produced. If electricity has a life cycle carbon content similar to or better than a modern natural gas combined cycle powerplant full powertrain electrification makes sense from a climate point of view and in many cases also provides reductions in TCO. In general vehicles with smaller batteries and longer lifetime distances have the best cost and climate performance. If a very large driving range is required or clean electricity is not available hybrid powertrain and compressed natural gas vehicles are good options in terms of both costs and climate change impacts. Alternative powertrains containing large batteries or fuel cells are the most sensitive to changes in the future electricity system as their life cycles are more electricity intensive. The benefits of these alternative drivetrains are strongly linked to the success of the energy transition: the more the electricity sector is decarbonized the greater the benefit of electrifying passenger vehicles.
A Model-based Parametric and Optimal Sizing of a Battery/Hydrogen Storage of a Real Hybrid Microgrid Supplying a Residential Load: Towards Island Operation

In this study the optimal sizing of a hybrid battery/hydrogen Energy Storage System “ESS” is assessed via a model-based parametric analysis in the context of a real hybrid renewable microgrid located in Huelva Spain supplying a real-time monitored residential load (3.5 kW; 5.6 MWh/year) in island mode. Four storage configurations (battery-only H2-only hybrid battery priority and hybrid H2 priority) are assessed under different Energy Management Strategies analysing system performance parameters such as Loss of Load “LL” (kWh;%) Over Production “OP” (kWh;%) round-trip storage efficiency ESS (%) and total storage cost (€) depending on the ESS sizing characteristics. A parallel approach to the storage optimal sizing via both multi-dimensional sensitivity analysis and PSO is carried out in order to address both sub-optimal and optimal regions respectively. Results show that a hybridised ESS capacity is beneficial from an energy security and efficiency point of view but can represent a substantial additional total cost (between 100 and 300 k€) to the hybrid energy system especially for the H2 ESS which presents higher costs. Reaching 100% supply from renewables is challenging and introducing a LL threshold induces a substantial relaxation of the sizing and cost requirements. Increase in battery capacity is more beneficial for the LL abatement while increasing H2 capacity is more useful to absorb large quantities of excess energy. The optimal design via PSO technique is complemented to the parametric study.
Validation of GreenH2armony® as a Tool for the Computation of Harmonised Life-Cycle Indicators of Hydrogen

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is often used to check the environmental suitability of hydrogen energy systems usually involving comparative studies. However these comparative studies are typically affected by inconsistent methodological choices between the case studies under comparison. In this regard protocols for the harmonisation of methodological choices in LCA of hydrogen are available. The step-by-step application of these protocols to a large number of case studies has already resulted in libraries of harmonised carbon energy and acidification footprints of hydrogen. In order to foster the applicability of these harmonisation protocols a web-based software for the calculation of harmonised life-cycle indicators of hydrogen has recently been developed. This work addresses—for the first time—the validation of such a tool by checking the deviation between the available libraries of harmonised carbon energy and acidification footprints of hydrogen and the corresponding tool-based harmonised results. A high correlation (R2 > 0.999) was found between the library- and tool-based harmonised life-cycle indicators of hydrogen thereby successfully validating the software. Hence this tool has the potential to effectively promote the use of harmonised life-cycle indicators for robust comparative LCA studies of hydrogen energy systems significantly mitigating misinterpretation.
Analysis of Stress Corrosion Cracking in X80 Pipeline Steel: An Approach from the Theory of Critical Distances

This paper presents an analysis of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) based on the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD). The research is based on an experimental program composed of fracture specimens with notch radius varying from 0 mm (crack-like defect) up to 1 mm and tensile specimens. A pipeline steel was used in this work (X80). It has been analysed in one hydrogen embrittlement situation. The study has been completed with Finite Elements Simulation analysis. The capacity of the TCD to analyse SCC processes has been proven.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of Prestressing Steel Wires: The Role of the Cold-drawing Conditions

Prestressing steel wires are highly susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Residual stress-strain state produced after wire drawing plays an essential role since hydrogen damage at certain places of the material is directly affected by stress and strain fields. Changes in wire drawing conditions modify the stress and strain fields and consequently the HE susceptibility and life in service of these structural components in the presence of a hydrogenating environment. This paper analyzes the distributions of residual stress and plastic strain obtained after diverse drawing conditions (inlet die angle die bearing length varying die angle and straining path) and their influence on HE susceptibility of the wires. The conditions for industrial cold drawing can thus be optimized thereby producing commercial prestressing steel wires with improved performance against HE phenomena.
Hydrogen in Grid Balancing: The European Market Potential for Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzers

To limit the global temperature change to no more than 2 ◦C by reducing global emissions the European Union (EU) set up a goal of a 20% improvement on energy efficiency a 20% cut of greenhouse gas emissions and a 20% share of energy from renewable sources by 2020 (10% share of renewable energy (RE) specifically in the transport sector). By 2030 the goal is a 27% improvement in energy efficiency a 40% cut of greenhouse gas emissions and a 27% share of RE. However the integration of RE in energy system faces multiple challenges. The geographical distribution of energy supply changes significantly the availability of the primary energy source (wind solar water) and is the determining factor rather than where the consumers are. This leads to an increasing demand to match supply and demand for power. Especially intermittent RE like wind and solar power face the issue of energy production unrelated to demand (issue of excess energy production beyond demand and/or grid capacity) and forecast errors leading to an increasing demand for grid services like balancing power. Megawatt electrolyzer units (beyond 3 MW) can provide a technical solution to convert large amounts of excess electricity into hydrogen for industrial applications substitute for natural gas or the decarbonization of the mobility sector. The demonstration of successful MW electrolyzer operation providing grid services under dynamic conditions as request by the grid can broaden the opportunities of new business models that demonstrate the profitability of an electrolyzer in these market conditions. The aim of this work is the demonstration of a technical solution utilizing Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer (PAE) technology for providing grid balancing services and harvesting Renewable Energy Sources (RES) under realistic circumstances. In order to identify any differences between local market and grid requirements the work focused on a demonstration site located in Austria deemed as a viable business case for the operation of a largescale electrolyzer. The site is adapted to specific local conditions commonly found throughout Europe. To achieve this this study uses a market-based solution that aims at providing value-adding services and cash inflows stemming from the grid balancing services it provides. Moreover the work assesses the viability of various business cases by analyzing (qualitatively and quantitatively) additional business models (in terms of business opportunities/energy source potential grid service provision and hydrogen demand) and analyzing the value and size of the markets developing recommendations for relevant stakeholder to decrease market barriers.
Analysis of Samples Cleaning Methods Prior to Hydrogen Content Determination in Steel

There are multiple references to sample cleaning methods prior to hydrogen content determination or hydrogen spectroscopy analysis but there is still no unified criteria; different authors use their own “know-how” to perform this task. The aim of this paper is to solve or at least clarify this issue. In this work the most commonly used sample cleaning methods are compared. Then five different methodologies are applied on certified hydrogen content calibration pins and on high strength steel concrete-prestressing strands and the three main situations regarding hydrogen content in the microstructural net (non-charged charged and charged and uncharged) are studied. It was concluded that the HCl solution C-3.5 cleaning method recommended by ASTM G1 introduces large amounts of hydrogen in the samples; but can be useful for eliminating superficial oxides if necessary. The rest of the methods had similar results; but the more complete ones that involve ultrasounds and last longer than 8 min are not appropriated when important diffusion may occur on the samples during their application. Simple methods that involve acetone or trichloroethylene and last around 1 min are preferable for almost all situations as these are faster easier and cheaper. As a final recommendation as trichloroethylene is toxic the simple acetone method is in general the most convenient one for regular hydrogen content analysis.
Hybrid Power-heat Microgrid Solution Using Hydrogen as an Energy Vector for Residential Houses in Spain. A Case Study

In order to favor a transition to a renewable energy economy it is necessary to study the possible permeation of renewable energy sources not only in the electric grid or industrial scale but also in the small householding scale. One of the most interesting technologies available for this purpose is solar energy since it is a mature technology that can be easily installed in every rooftop. Thus a techno-economic assessment was carried out to evaluate the installation of a solar-based power-heat hybrid microgrid considering the use of hydrogen as an energy vector in a typical residential house in Spain. Lead-acid batteries plus the photovoltaic and solar thermal energy installation are complemented with a hydrogen system composed of an electrolyzer two metal hydride bottles and a fuel cell. A simulation tool has been generated using experimental models developed and validated with real equipment for each one of the electric microgrid component. Three operating modes were tested making use of this tool to better manage the energy consumed/produced and optimize the economic output of the facility. The results show that setting up a hydrogen-based microgrid in a residential house is unviable today mainly due to the high cost of hydrogen generation and consumption equipment. If only solar energy is considered the microgrid inversion (12.500 €) is recovered in ten years. On the other hand selling the electricity output has almost no repercussions considering current electrical rates in Spain. Finally while using an optimization algorithm to manage energy use battery life-spam and economic benefit slightly increase. However this profit may not be enough to justify the use of a more complex control system. The results of this research will help users renewable energy companies investigators and policymakers to better understand the different factors influencing the spread of renewable smart grids in households and propose solutions to address these.
Assessing the Life-Cycle Performance of Hydrogen Production via Biofuel Reforming in Europe

Currently hydrogen is mainly produced through steam reforming of natural gas. However this conventional process involves environmental and energy security concerns. This has led to the development of alternative technologies for (potentially) green hydrogen production. In this work the environmental and energy performance of biohydrogen produced in Europe via steam reforming of glycerol and bio-oil is evaluated from a life-cycle perspective and contrasted with that of conventional hydrogen from steam methane reforming. Glycerol as a by-product from the production of rapeseed biodiesel and bio-oil from the fast pyrolysis of poplar biomass are considered. The processing plants are simulated in Aspen Plus® to provide inventory data for the life cycle assessment. The environmental impact potentials evaluated include abiotic depletion global warming ozone layer depletion photochemical oxidant formation land competition acidification and eutrophication. Furthermore the cumulative (total and non-renewable) energy demand is calculated as well as the corresponding renewability scores and life-cycle energy balances and efficiencies of the biohydrogen products. In addition to quantitative evidence of the (expected) relevance of the feedstock and impact categories considered results show that poplar-derived bio-oil could be a suitable feedstock for steam reforming in contrast to first-generation bioglycerol.
On the Concept of Micro-fracture Map (MFM) and its Role in Structural Integrity Evaluations in Materials Science and Engineering: A Tribute to Jorge Manrique

This paper deals with the concept of micro-fracture map (MFM) and its role in structural integrity evaluations in materials science and engineering on the basis of previous research by the author on notch-induced fracture and hydrogen embrittlement of progressively cold drawn pearlitic steels and 316L austenitic stainless steel. With regard to this some examples are provided of assembly of MFMs in particular situations.
The Effect of Heat Treatments on the Constituent Materials of a Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel in Hydrogen Environment

A nuclear reactor pressure vessel (NRPV) wall is formed by two layer of different materials: an inner layer of stainless steel (cladding material) and an outer layer of low carbon steel (base material) which is highly susceptible to corrosion related phenomena. A reduction of the mechanical properties of both materials forming the wall would appear due to the action of the harsh environment causing hydrogen embrittlement (HE) related phenomena. As a result of the manufacturing process residual stresses and strains appear in the NRPV wall thereby influencing the main stage in HE: hydrogen diffusion. A common engineering practice for reducing such states is to apply a tempering heat treatment. In this paper a numerical analysis is carried out for revealing the influence of the heat treatment parameters (tempering temperature and tempering time) on the HE of a commonly used NRPV. To achieve this goal a numerical model of hydrogen diffusion assisted by stress and strain was used considering diverse residual stress-strain states after tempering. This way the obtained hydrogen accumulation during operation time of the NRPV provides insight into the better tempering conditions from the structural integrity point of view.

The paper presents the first outcomes of the experimental numerical and theoretical studies performed in the funded by Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH2 JU) project HyTunnel-CS. The project aims to conduct pre-normative research (PNR) to close relevant knowledge gaps and technological bottlenecks in the provision of safety of hydrogen vehicles in underground transportation systems. Pre normative research performed in the project will ultimately result in three main outputs: harmonised recommendations on response to hydrogen accidents recommendations for inherently safer use of hydrogen vehicles in underground traffic systems and recommendations for RCS. The overall concept behind this project is to use inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral prenormative research by bringing together theoretical modelling and experimental studies to maximise the impact. The originality of the overall project concept is the consideration of hydrogen vehicle and underground traffic structure as a single system with integrated safety approach. The project strives to develop and offer safety strategies reducing or completely excluding hydrogen-specific risks to drivers passengers public and first responders in case of hydrogen vehicle accidents within the currently available infrastructure.
AMHYCO Project - Towards Advanced Accident Guidelines for Hydrogen Safety in Nuclear Power Plants

Severe accidents in nuclear power plants are potentially dangerous to both humans and the environment. To prevent and/or mitigate the consequences of these accidents it is paramount to have adequate accident management measures in place. During a severe accident combustible gases — especially hydrogen and carbon monoxide — can be released in significant amounts leading to a potential explosion risk in the nuclear containment building. These gases need to be managed to avoid threatening the containment integrity which can result in the releases of radioactive material into the environment. The main objective of the AMHYCO project is to propose innovative enhancements in the way combustible gases are managed in case of a severe accident in currently operating reactors. For this purpose the AMHYCO project pursues three specific activities including experimental investigations of relevant phenomena related to hydrogen / carbon monoxide combustion and mitigation with PARs (Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners) improvement of the predictive capabilities of analysis tools used for explosion hazard evaluation inside the reactor containment as well as enhancement of the Severe Accident Management Guidelines (SAMGs) with respect to combustible gases risk management based on theoretical and experimental results. Officially launched on 1 October 2020 AMHYCO is an EU-funded Horizon 2020 project that will last 4 years from 2020 to 2024. This international project consists of 12 organizations (six from European countries and one from Canada) and is led by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). AMHYCO will benefit from the worldwide experts in combustion science accident management and nuclear safety in its Advisory Board. The paper will give an overview of the work program and planned outcome of the project.
Optimal Design of Photovoltaic, Biomass, Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Tank Units and Electrolyzer Hybrid System for a Remote Area in Egypt

In this paper a new isolated hybrid system is simulated and analyzed to obtain the optimal sizing and meet the electricity demand with cost improvement for servicing a small remote area with a peak load of 420 kW. The major configuration of this hybrid system is Photovoltaic (PV) modules Biomass gasifier (BG) Electrolyzer units Hydrogen Tank units (HT) and Fuel Cell (FC) system. A recent optimization algorithm namely Mayfly Optimization Algorithm (MOA) is utilized to ensure that all load demand is met at the lowest energy cost (EC) and minimize the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the proposed system. The MOA is selected as it collects the main merits of swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms; hence it has good convergence characteristics. To ensure the superiority of the selected MOA the obtained results are compared with other well-known optimization algorithms namely Sooty Tern Optimization Algorithm (STOA) Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA). The results reveal that the suggested MOA achieves the best system design achieving a stable convergence characteristic after 44 iterations. MOA yielded the best EC with 0.2106533 $/kWh the net present cost (NPC) with 6170134 $ the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) with 0.05993% and GHG with 792.534 t/y.
Ammonia as a Carrier for Hydrogen Production by using Lanthanum Based Perovskites

LaNiO3 and LaCoO3 perovskites synthesized by self-combustion were characterised and studied in the ammonia decomposition reaction for obtaining hydrogen. Both the fuel to metal nitrates molar ratio and calcination temperature were found to be crucial to synthesize perovskites by self-combustion. Moreover generating non-precursor species during synthesis and small metal size were two factors which significantly influenced catalytic activity. Hence with a citric acid to metal nitrates molar ratio equal to one a LaNiO3 perovskite was obtained with suitable physicochemical properties (specific surface area lower impurities and basicity). In addition a lower calcination temperature (650 ◦C) resulted in small and well-dispersed Ni0 crystallite size after reduction which in turn promoted the catalytic transformation of ammonia into hydrogen. For cobalt perovskites calcination temperature below 900 ◦C did not have a significant influence on the size of the metallic cobalt crystallite size. The nickel and cobalt perovskite-derived catalysts calcined at 650 ◦C and 750 ◦C respectively yielded excellent H2 production from ammonia decomposition. In particular at 450 ◦C almost 100% of the ammonia was converted over the LaNiO3 under study. Furthermore these materials displayed admirable performance and stability after one day of reaction.
Waste Aluminum Application as Energy Valorization for Hydrogen Fuel Cells for Mobile Low Power Machines Applications

This article proposes a new model of power supply for mobile low power machines applications between 10 W and 30 W such as radio-controlled (RC) electric cars. This power supply is based on general hydrogen from residual aluminum and water with NaOH so it is proposed energy valorization of aluminum waste. In the present research a theoretical model allows us to predict the requested aluminum surface and the required flow of hydrogen has been developed also considering in addition to the geometry and purity of the material two key variables as the temperature and the molarity of the alkaline solution used in the hydrogen production process. Focusing on hydrogen production isopropyl alcohol plays a key role in the reactor’s fuel cell vehicle as it filters out NaOH particles and maintains a constant flow of hydrogen for the operation of the machine keeping the reactor temperature controlled. Finally a comparison of the theoretical and experimental data has been used to validate the developed model using aluminum sheets from ring cans to generate hydrogen which will be used as a source of hydrogen in a power fuel cell of an RC car. Finally the manuscript shows the parts of the vehicle’s powertrain its behavior and mode of operation.

This edition of the Global Gas Report covers two very turbulent years in the global gas industry and the wider global energy markets. The Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns with a brief period of excess supply and low prices gave way to tight energy markets extreme price volatility and a compounding geopolitical challenge to energy security. At the time of writing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has been affecting the flows of gas and has put Europe on a quest to diversify its energy and gas supply that is now opening a new paradigm in the energy industry. This report comes at a time when the situation for global commodity and gas markets is in a state of rapid change and the strategic path forwards for the gas industry and energy policy-makers is continually developing. One thing is clear this is a critical and decisive moment for the gas industry. How it navigates the way through this crisis and charts a path forward will shape its long-term success and the role that it will play in the energy transition and beyond. This is the moment for the gas industry to demonstrate that gas can deliver a sustainable and secure energy future for all and that natural gas and a portfolio of decarbonized low- and zero-carbon gases are key to an achievable energy transition. This year’s report assesses key gas market trends from 2020 and 2021 including Covid-19 outcomes tightness of supply price volatility investments and the upward reversal in the global emissions trend. It then turns to the main topic on the global energy agenda – security – and considers key variables impacting it from industry and policy perspectives as well as considering possible paths to reinforce it. Finally the report looks at the main decarbonization pathways for gas supply as they progressively develop to make gas itself a low or zero-carbon fuel for the future. This report seeks to deliver insights about the global gas sector and to inform its stakeholders partners and importantly global decision-makers about the state of play today and possibilities for the future. It concludes with key insights on how sustainability security and competitiveness can help to deliver a sustainable future in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.
Micro-grid Design and Life-cycle Assessment of a Mountain Hut's Stand-alone Energy System with Hydrogen Used for Seasonal Storage

Mountain huts as special stand-alone micro-grid systems are not connected to a power grid and represent a burden on the environment. The micro-grid has to be flexible to cover daily and seasonal fluctuations. Heat and electricity are usually generated with fossil fuels due to the simple on-off operation. By introducing renewable energy sources (RESs) the generation of energy could be more sustainable but the generation and consumption must be balanced. The paper describes the integration of a hydrogen-storage system (HSS) and a battery-storage system (BattS) in a mountain hut. The HSS involves a proton-exchange-membrane water electrolyser (PEMWE) a hydrogen storage tank (H2 tank) a PEM fuel cell (PEMFC) and a BattS consisting of lead-acid batteries. Eight micro-grid configurations were modelled using HOMER and evaluated from the technical environmental and economic points of view. A life-cycle assessment analysis was made from the cradle to the gate. The micro-grid configurations with the HSS achieve on average a more than 70% decrease in the environmental impacts in comparison to the state of play at the beginning but require a larger investment. Comparing the HSS with the BattS as a seasonal energy storage the hydrogen-based technology had advantages for all of the assessed criteria.
