Numerical Simulation of the Transport and the Thermodynamic Properties of Imported Natural Gas Inected with Hydrogen in the Manifold
Nov 2023
Publication
Blending hydrogen with natural gas (NG) is an efficient method for transporting hydrogen on a large scale at a low cost. The manifold at the NG initial station is an important piece of equipment that enables the blending of hydrogen with NG. However there are differences in the components and component contents of imported NG from different countries. The components of hydrogen-blended NG can affect the safety and efficiency of transportation through pipeline systems. Therefore numerical simulations were performed to investigate the blending process and changes in the thermodynamic properties of four imported NGs and hydrogen in the manifold. The higher the heavy hydrocarbon content in the imported NG the longer the distance required for the gas to mix uniformly with hydrogen in the pipeline. Hydrogen blending reduces the temperature and density of NG. The gas composition is the main factor affecting the molar calorific value of a gas mixture and hydrogen blending reduces the molar calorific value of NG. The larger the content of high-molar calorific components in the imported NG the higher the molar calorific value of the gas after hydrogen blending. Increasing both the temperature and hydrogen mixing ratio reduces the Joule-Thomson coefficient of the hydrogen-blended NG. The results of this study provide technical references for the transport of hydrogen-blended NG.
Optimization of Emergency Alternatives for Hydrogen Leakage and Explosion Accidents Based on Improved VIKOR
Nov 2023
Publication
Hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents have obvious dangers ambiguity of accident information and urgency of decision-making time. These characteristics bring challenges to the optimization of emergency alternatives for such accidents. Effective emergency decision making is crucial to mitigating the consequences of accidents and minimizing losses and can provide a vital reference for emergency management in the field of hydrogen energy. An improved VIKOR emergency alternatives optimization method is proposed based on the combination of hesitant triangular fuzzy set (HTFS) and the cumulative prospect theory (CPT) termed the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method. This method adopts the hesitant triangular fuzzy number to represent the decision information on the alternatives under the influence of multi-attributes constructs alternatives evaluation indicators and solves the indicator weights by using the deviation method. Based on CPT positive and negative ideal points were used as reference points to construct the prospect matrix which then utilized the VIKOR method to optimize the emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents. Taking an accident at a hydrogen refueling station as an example the effectiveness and rationality of the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method were verified by comparing with the existing three methods and conducting parameter sensitivity analysis. Research results show that the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method effectively captures the limited psychological behavior characteristics of decision makers and enhances their ability to identify filter and judge ambiguous information making the decisionmaking alternatives more in line with the actual environment which provided strong support for the optimization of emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents.

With the goal of achieving “carbon peak in 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2060” as clearly proposed by China the transportation sector will face long–term pressure on carbon emissions and the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will usher in a rapid growth period. However true “zero carbon” emissions cannot be separated from “green hydrogen”. Therefore it is of practical significance to explore the feasibility of renewable energy hydrogen production in the context of hydrogen refueling stations especially photovoltaic hydrogen production which is applied to hydrogen refueling stations (hereinafter referred to “photovoltaic hydrogen refueling stations”). This paper takes a hydrogen refueling station in Shanghai with a supply capacity of 500 kg/day as the research object. Based on a characteristic analysis of the hydrogen demand of the hydrogen refueling station throughout the day this paper studies and analyzes the system configuration operation strategy environmental effects and economics of the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station. It is estimated that when the hydrogen price is no less than 6.23 USD the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station has good economic benefits. Additionally compared with the conventional hydrogen refueling station it can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1237.28 tons per year with good environmental benefits.
Alternative-energy-vehicles Deployment Delivers Climate, Air Quality, and Health Co-benefits when Coupled with Decarbonizing Power Generation in China
Aug 2021
Publication
China is the world’s largest carbon emitter and suffers from severe air pollution which results in approximately one million premature deaths/year. Alternative energy vehicles (AEVs) (electric hydrogen fuel cell and natural gas vehicles) can reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. However climate air quality and health benefits of AEVs powered with deeply decarbonized power generation are poorly quantified. Here we quantitatively estimate the air quality health carbon emission and economic benefits of replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with various AEVs. We find co-benefits increase dramatically as the electricity grid decarbonizes and hydrogen is produced from non-fossil fuels. Relative to 2015 a conversion to AEVs using largely non-fossil power can reduce air pollution and associated premature mortalities and years of life lost by 329000 persons/year and 1611000 life years/year. Thus maximizing climate air quality and health benefits of AEV deployment in China requires rapid decarbonization of the power system.
Performance Study on Methanol Steam Reforming Rib Micro-Reactor with Waste Heat Recovery
Mar 2020
Publication
Automobile exhaust heat recovery is considered to be an effective means to enhance fuel utilization. The catalytic production of hydrogen by methanol steam reforming is an attractive option for onboard mobile applications due to its many advantages. However the reformers of conventional packed bed type suffer from axial temperature gradients and cold spots resulting from severe limitations of mass and heat transfer. These disadvantages limit reformers to a low efficiency of catalyst utilization. A novel rib microreactor was designed for the hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming heated by automobile exhaust and the effect of inlet exhaust and methanol steam on reactor performance was numerically analyzed in detail with computational fluid dynamics. The results showed that the best operating parameters were the counter flow water-to-alcohol (W/A) of 1.3 exhaust inlet velocity of 1.1 m/s and exhaust inlet temperature of 773 K when the inlet velocity and inlet temperature of the reactant were 0.1 m/s and 493 K respectively. At this condition a methanol conversion of 99.4% and thermal efficiency of 28% were achieved together with a hydrogen content of 69.6%.
Evaluation of Stability and Catalytic Activity of Ni Catalysts for Hydrogen Production by Biomass Gasification in Supercritical Water
Mar 2019
Publication
Supercritical water gasification is a promising technology for wet biomass utilization. In this paper Ni and other metal catalysts were synthesized by wet impregnation. The stability and catalytic activities of Ni catalysts were evaluated. Firstly catalytic activities of Ni Fe Cu catalysts supported on MgO were tested using wheat straw as raw material in a batch reactor at 723 K and water density of 0.07 cm3/g. Experimental results showed that the order of metal catalyst activity for hydrogen generation was Ni/MgO > Fe/MgO > Cu/MgO. Secondly the influence of different supports on Ni catalysts performance was investigated. The results showed that the order of the Ni catalysts’ activity with different supports was Ni/MgO > Ni/ZnO > Ni/Al2O3 > Ni/ZrO2. Finally the effects of Ni loading and the amount of Ni catalyst addition on hydrogen production and the stability of Ni/MgO catalyst were studied. It was found that serious deactivation of Ni catalyst in the process of supercritical water gasification took place. Even if carbon deposited on the catalyst surface was removed by high temperature calcination and the catalyst was reduced with hydrogen the activity of used catalyst was only partially restored.

The remaining useful life (RUL) prediction for hydrogen fuel cells is an important part of its prognostics and health management (PHM). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are proven to be very effective in RUL prediction as they do not need to understand the failure mechanisms behind hydrogen fuel cells. A novel RUL prediction method for hydrogen fuel cells based on the gated recurrent unit ANN is proposed in this paper. Firstly the data were preprocessed to remove outliers and noises. Secondly the performance of different neural networks is compared including the back propagation neural network (BPNN) the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) network. According to our proposed method based on GRU the root mean square error was 0.0026 the mean absolute percentage error was 0.0038 and the coefficient of determination was 0.9891 for the data from the challenge datasets provided by FCLAB Research Federation when the prediction starting point was 650 h. Compared with the other RUL prediction methods based on the BPNN and the LSTM our prediction method is better in both prediction accuracy and convergence rate.

Numerical Study of Combustion and Emission Characteristics for Hydrogen Mixed Fuel in the Methane-Fueled Gas Turbine Combustor
Jan 2023
Publication
The aeroderivative gas turbine is widely used as it demonstrates many advantages. Adding hydrogen to natural gas fuels can improve the performance of combustion. Following this the effects of hydrogen enrichment on combustion characteristics were analyzed in an aeroderivative gas turbine combustor using CFD simulations. The numerical model was validated with experimental results. The conditions of the constant mass flow rate and the constant energy input were studied. The results indicate that adding hydrogen reduced the fuel residues significantly (fuel mass at the combustion chamber outlet was reduced up to 60.9%). In addition the discharge of C2H2 and other pollutants was reduced. Increasing the volume fraction of hydrogen in the fuel also reduced CO emissions at the constant energy input while increasing CO emissions at the constant fuel mass flow rate. An excess in the volume fraction of added hydrogen changed the combustion mode in the combustion chamber resulting in fuel-rich combustion (at constant mass flow rate) and diffusion combustion (at constant input power). Hydrogen addition increased the pattern factor and NOx emissions at the outlet of the combustion chamber.

Publication
Hydrogen is considered to the ultimate solution to achieve carbon emission reduction due to its wide sources and high calorific value as well as non-polluting renewable and storable advantages. This paper starts from the coastal areas uses offshore wind power hydrogen production as the hydrogen source and focuses on the combination of hydrogen supply chain network design and hydrogen expressway hydrogen refueling station layout optimization. It proposes a comprehensive mathematical model of hydrogen supply chain network based on cost analysis which determined the optimal size and location of hydrogen refueling stations on hydrogen expressways in coastal areas. Under the multi-scenario and multi-case optimization results the location of the hydrogen refueling station can effectively cover the road sections of each case and the unit hydrogen cost of the hydrogen supply chain network is between 11.8 and 15.0 USD/kgH2 . Meanwhile it was found that the transportation distance and the number of hydrogen sources play a decisive role on the cost of hydrogen in the supply chain network and the location of hydrogen sources have a decisive influence on the location of hydrogen refueling stations. In addition carbon emission reduction results of hydrogen supply chain network show that the carbon emission reduction per unit hydrogen production is 15.51 kgCO2/kgH2 at the production side. The CO2 emission can be reduced by 68.3 kgCO2/km and 6.35 kgCO2/kgH2 per unit mileage and per unit hydrogen demand at the application side respectively. The layout planning utilization of hydrogen energy expressway has a positive impact on energy saving and emission reduction.
Velocity Measurements of Hydrogen Jets Using the Optical Flow Method
Sep 2021
Publication
Concentration and velocity measurements are crucial for developing and validating hydrogen jet models which provide scientific bases for hydrogen safety analyses. The concentration fields have been visualized and accurately measured using laser diagnostic methods based on lase Rayleigh and Raman scattering techniques. However the velocity measurements are more challenging. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been commonly used for measuring velocities in turbulent flows by seeding tracer particles into the flow and assuming the particles intimately following the flow. However sometimes the particle seeding is difficult or disturbs the flow. Moreover simultaneously concentration and velocity measurements are very difficult when using PIV systems to measure the velocities. Therefore the optical flow velocimetry (OFV) method was used to resolve the velocity fields from the scalar fields or particle images of hydrogen jets. In the present work the velocity field and particle images of hydrogen jets were simulated using FLUENT with the large eddy simulation (LES) model and the particle images were then used to resolve the velocity field by the OFV method. The OFV results were compared with the CFD simulations to verify their accuracy. The results show that the OFC method was an efficient low-cost way to extract the velocity fields from particle images. The OFV method accurately located the large vortices in the flow and the velocity distribution of the high-velocity gradients regions was consistent with the CFD results. The present study lays a foundation for using the OFV method to directly resolve the velocity fields from the concentration fields of hydrogen jets measured by laser diagnostics.
Integrating a Top-Gas Recycling and CO2 Electrolysis Process for H2-Rich Gas Injection and Reduce CO2 Emissions from an Ironmaking Blast Furnace
Mar 2022
Publication
Introducing CO2 electrochemical conversion technology to the iron-making blast furnace not only reduces CO2 emissions but also produces H2 as a byproduct that can be used as an auxiliary reductant to further decrease carbon consumption and emissions. With adequate H2 supply to the blast furnace the injection of H2 is limited because of the disadvantageous thermodynamic characteristics of the H2 reduction reaction in the blast furnace. This paper presents thermodynamic analysis of H2 behaviour at different stages with the thermal requirement consideration of an iron-making blast furnace. The effect of injecting CO2 lean top gas and CO2 conversion products H2–CO gas through the raceway and/or shaft tuyeres are investigated under different operating conditions. H2 utilisation efficiency and corresponding injection volume are studied by considering different reduction stages. The relationship between H2 injection and coke rate is established. Injecting 7.9–10.9 m3/tHM of H2 saved 1 kg/tHM coke rate depending on injection position. Compared with the traditional blast furnace injecting 80 m3/tHM of H2 with a medium oxygen enrichment rate (9%) and integrating CO2 capture and conversion reduces CO2 emissions from 534 to 278 m3/tHM. However increasing the hydrogen injection amount causes this iron-making process to consume more energy than a traditional blast furnace does.

Publication
In order to ensure the safety of shore-based hydrogen bunkering operations this paper takes a 2000-ton bulk hydrogen powered ship as an example. Firstly the HAZID method is used to identify the hazards of hydrogen bunkering then the probability of each scenario is analyzed and then the consequences of scenarios with high risk based on FLACS software is simulated. Finally the personal risk of bunkering operation is evaluated and the bunkering restriction area is defined. The results show that the personal risk of shore-based bunkering operation of hydrogen powered ship is acceptable but the following risk control measures should be taken: (1) The bunkering restriction area shall be delineated and only the necessary operators are allowed to enter the area and control the any form of potential ignition source; (2) The hose is the high risk hazards during bunkering. The design form of bunkering arm and bunkering hose is considered to shorten the length of the hose as far as possible; (3) A safe distance between shore-based hydrogenation station and the building outside the station should be guaranteed. The results have a guiding role in effectively reducing the risk of hydrogen bunkering operation.

Jun 2022
Publication
Fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles have attracted a large amount of attention in recent years owing to their advantages of zero emissions high efficiency and low noise. To improve the fuel economy and system durability of vehicles this paper proposes an energy management strategy optimization method for fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles based on dynamic programming. Rule-based and dynamic-programming-based strategies are developed based on building a fuel cell/battery hybrid system model. The rule-based strategy is improved with a power distribution scheme of dynamic programming strategy to improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. Furthermore a limit on the rate of change of the output power of the fuel cell system is added to the rule-based strategy to avoid large load changes to improve the durability of the fuel cell. The simulation results show that the equivalent 100 km hydrogen consumption of the strategy based on the dynamic programming optimization rules is reduced by 6.46% compared with that before the improvement and by limiting the rate of change of the output power of the fuel cell system the times of large load changes are reduced. Therefore the strategy based on the dynamic programming optimization rules effectively improves the fuel economy and system durability of vehicles.

Dec 2022
Publication
In an actual thermal power plant deep peak shaving will cause thermal power units to run under non-nominal conditions for an extended period resulting in serious problems such as increased equipment wearing low equipment utilization efficiency and decreased benefits. To this end in this work both the design and optimization method for a coal to hydrogen system which is coupled with the expected non-nominal operation of thermal power units are proposed. Aiming towards maximum profit in the context of thermal power plants a mathematical optimization model for a coal to hydrogen system based on the multi-period operating conditions of thermal power plants is established. The corresponding optimal design scheme of the coal to hydrogen system is determined using variable operating conditions. The superiority of the integrated system compared with an independent system is explored and the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by using the case study of an actual thermal power plant. The results show that compared with the independent system the economic benefits of the integrated system can increase by 13.56% where the sale of hydrogen in the coal to hydrogen system accounts for 60.3% of the total benefit. The main expenditure associated with the system is the purchase cost of feedstock coal accounting for 91.8%. Since the required power and medium-pressure steam in the coal to hydrogen process are provided by thermal power units the minimum operating load of the thermal power plant in the integrated system increases from 40% to 60.1% which significantly improves the utilization efficiency and service life of the generator units. In addition the proposed integration scheme of the system is simple and controllable which can contribute to the maintenance of the safe and stable operation of power generation and hydrogen production processes. These results are expected to provide the necessary methodological guidance for the integration and optimization of coal-fired power plants and coal to hydrogen systems.
Influence of Air Distribution on Combustion Characteristics of a Micro Gas Turbine Fuelled by Hydrogen-doped Methane
Nov 2021
Publication
Adding hydrogen to the fuel can change the combustion characteristics and greatly improve the pollutants emission for the gas turbine. The numerical method was adopted to study the combustion process in a counter-flow combustor of a 100 kW micro gas turbine using methane doped by hydrogen and various distribution schemes of air flow. The combustion characteristics and pollutant emissions were explored to ascertain the influence of air distribution based on solving the validated models. It was shown that as the amount of premixed air increased in the swirling gas the range of the recirculation region became larger and the range of the high-temperature zone in the combustion chamber gradually enlarged. When the amount of premixed air was 30% the outlet temperature distribution of the combustor was excellent and the average temperature was 1172 K. Moreover the concentration of NOX gradually increased and reached a maximum value of 23.46 ppm (@15% O2) as the premixed air increased in the range of the ratio less than 40%. It was reduced to 0.717 ppm (@15% O2) when the amount of premixed air increased to 50%. These findings may support the running of the micro gas turbine using the hybrid fuel of hydrogen and methane.

Residual Tensile Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Resin Composites at Elevated Temperatures
Sep 2021
Publication
Carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites have attracted great attention in high pressure hydrogen storage for its light weight and excellent mechanical properties. The degradation of residual mechanical properties at elevated temperature from 20 °C to 450 °C were studied experimentally. The effects of temperature on the tensile strength and failure mode of the composite specimens with stacking sequences of 0° 90° and ±45° (labeled as CF0 CF90 and CF 45) were systematically analyzed followed by the fracture surfaces examination. Results show that the tensile strength residual ratios of the three kinds of specimens decrease significantly with heating temperature increasing. In particular the decomposing temperature of the resin matrix exerts the largest effects on the degradation of tensile strength of CF0 specimen within 450 °C. While the loss of tensile strength of CF90 and CF45 specimens is dependent on the thermal softening of epoxy resin which has closely related to the glass transition temperature. Furthermore the debonding and fiber softening appeared in the CF0 specimens when the temperature reached 450 °C. For CF90 specimens the degradation of bonding strength of epoxy could be found at 150 °C and regarding CF45 specimens delamination cracking between plies occurred extensively when the temperature above 125 °C.
A Numerical Investigation on De-NOx Technology and Abnormal Combustion Control for a Hydrogen Engine with EGR System
Sep 2020
Publication
The combustion emissions of the hydrogen-fueled engines are very clean but the problems of abnormal combustion and high NOx emissions limit their applications. Nowadays hydrogen engines use exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology to control the intensity of premixed combustion and reduce the NOx emissions. This study aims at improving the abnormal combustion and decreasing the NOx emissions of the hydrogen engine by applying a three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a single-cylinder hydrogen-fueled engine equipped with an EGR system. The results indicated that peak in-cylinder pressure continuously increased with the increase of the ignition advance angle and was closer to the top dead center (TDC). In addition the mixture was burned violently near the theoretical air–fuel ratio and the combustion duration was shortened. Moreover the NOx emissions the average pressure and the in-cylinder temperature decreased as the EGR ratio increased. Furthermore increasing the EGR ratio led to an increase in the combustion duration and a decrease in the peak heat release rate. EGR system could delay the spontaneous combustion reaction of the end-gas and reduce the probability of knocking. The pressure rise rate was controlled and the in-cylinder hot spots were reduced by the EGR system which could suppress the occurrence of the pre-ignition in the hydrogen engine.

In the fast filling process in order to control the temperature of the vehicle-mounted storage tank not to exceed the upper limit of 85 ◦C it is an effective method to add a hydrogen pre-cooling system upstream of the hydrogenation machine. In this paper Fluent is used to simulate the heat transfer process of high-pressure hydrogen in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and the phase change process of refrigerant R23. The accuracy of the model is proven by a comparison with the data in the references. Using this model the temperature field and gas volume fraction in the heat transfer process are obtained which is helpful to analyze the heat transfer mechanism. At the same time the influence of hydrogen inlet temperature hydrogen inlet pressure and refrigerant flow rate on the refrigeration performance was studied. The current work shows that the model can be used to determine the best working parameters in the pre-cooling process and reduce the operating cost of the hydrogen refueling station.

Contribution of Potential Clean Trucks in Carbon Peak Pathway of Road Freight Based on Scenario Analysis: A Case Study of China
Oct 2022
Publication
Reducing the carbon emissions from trucks is critical to achieving the carbon peak of road freight. Based on the prediction of truck population and well-to-wheel (WTW) emission analysis of traditional diesel trucks and potential clean trucks including natural gas battery-electric plug-in hybrid electric and hydrogen fuel cell the paper analyzed the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of China's road freight under four scenarios including baseline policy facilitation (PF) technology breakthrough (TB) and PF-TB. The truck population from 2021 to 2035 is predicted based on regression analysis by selecting the data from 2002 to 2020 of the main variables such as the GDP scale road freight turnover road freight volume and the number of trucks. The study forecasts the truck population of different segments such as mini-duty trucks (MiDT) light-duty trucks (LDT) medium-duty trucks (MDT) and heavy-duty trucks (HDT). Relevant WTW emissions data are collected and adopted based on the popular truck in China's market PHEVs have better emission intensity especially in the HDT field which reduces by 51% compared with ICEVs. Results show that the scenario of TB and PF-TB can reach the carbon peak with 0.13% and 1.5% total GHG emissions reduction per year. In contrast the baseline and PF scenario fail the carbon peak due to only focusing on the number of clean trucks while lacking the restrictions on the GHG emission factors of energy and ignoring the improvement of trucks' energy efficiency and the total emissions increased by 29.76% and 16.69% respectively compared with 2020. As the insights adopting clean trucks has an important but limited effect which should coordinate with the transition to low carbon energy and the melioration of clean trucks to reach the carbon peak of road freight in China.
Transient Modeling and Performance Analysis of Hydrogen-Fueled Aero Engines
Jan 2023
Publication
With the combustor burning hydrogen as well as the strongly coupled fuel and cooling system the configuration of a hydrogen-fueled aero engine is more complex than that of a conventional aero engine. The performance and especially the dynamic behavior of a hydrogen-fueled aero engine need to be fully understood for engine system design and optimization. In this paper both the transient modeling and performance analysis of hydrogen-fueled engines are presented. Firstly the models specific to the hydrogen-fueled engine components and systems including the hydrogen-fueled combustor the steam injection system a simplified model for a quick NOx emission assessment and the heat exchangers are developed and then integrated to a conventional engine models. The simulations with both Simulink and Speedgoat-based hardware in the loop system are carried out. Secondly the performance analysis is performed for a typical turbofan engine configuration CF6 and for the two hydrogen-fueled engine configurations ENABLEH2 and HySIITE which are currently under research and development by the European Union and Pratt & Whitney respectively. At last the simulation results demonstrate that the developed transient models can effectively reflect the characteristics of hydrogen burning heat exchanging and NOx emission for hydrogen-fueled engines. In most cases the hydrogen-fueled engines show lower specific fuel consumption lower turbine entry temperature and less NOx emissions compared with conventional engines. For example at max thrust state the advanced hydrogen-fueled engine can reduce the parameters mentioned above by about 68.5% 3.7% and 12.7% respectively (a mean value of two configurations).

Feb 2023
Publication
As an important component of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles the air compressor with an air foil bearing rotates at tens of thousands of revolutions per minute. The heat generation concentration problem caused by the high-speed motor loss seriously affects the safe and normal operation of the motor so it is very important to clarify the loss distribution of the high-speed motor and adopt a targeted loss reduction design for air compressor heat dissipation. In this paper for an air compressor with a foil bearing with a rated speed of 80000 rpm an empirical formula and a three-dimensional transient magnetic field finite element model are used to model and calculate the air friction loss stator core loss winding loss and permanent magnet eddy current loss. The accuracy of the analytical calculation method is verified by torque test experiments under different revolutions and the average simulation accuracy can reach 91.1%. Then the distribution of the air friction loss stator core loss winding loss and eddy current loss of the air compressor motor at different revolutions is obtained by using this method. The results show that the proposed method can effectively calculate the motor rotor loss of a high-speed air compressor with air foil bearing. Although the motor efficiency increases with the increase in motor speed the absolute value of loss also increases with the increase in motor speed. Stator core loss and air friction loss are the main sources of loss accounting for 55.64% and 29% of the total motor loss respectively. The electromagnetic loss of winding the eddy current and other alloys account for a relatively small proportion which is 15% in total. The conclusions obtained in this paper can effectively guide calculations of motor loss the motor heat dissipation design of a high-speed air compressor with an air foil bearing.

Physical storage methods including compressed hydrogen (CH2 ) liquid hydrogen (LH2 ) and cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2 ) and material-based (chemical) storage methods such as ammonia liquid organic hydrogen carriages (LOHCs) and metal hydrides are carefully discussed in terms of their operational conditions energy capacity and economic costs. CH2 technology is the most mature now but its storage density cannot reach the final target which is the same problem for intermetallic compounds. In contrast LH2 CcH2 and complex hydrides are attractive for their high storage density. Nevertheless the harsh working conditions of complex hydrides hinder their vehicular application. Ammonia has advantages in energy capacity utilisation efficiency and cost especially being directly utilised by fuel cells. LOHCs are now considered as a potential candidate for hydrogen transport. Simplifying the dehydrogenation process is the important prerequisite for its vehicular employment. Recently increasing novel hydrogen-powered trains based on different hydrogen storage routes are being tested and optimised across the world. It can be forecasted that hydrogen energy will be a significant booster to railway decarbonisation.
Optimal Planning of Hybrid Electricity–Hydrogen Energy Storage System Considering Demand Response
Mar 2023
Publication
In recent years the stability of the distribution network has declined due to the large proportion of the uses of distributed generation (DG) with the continuous development of renewable energy power generation technology. Meanwhile the traditional distribution network operation mode cannot keep the balance of the source and load. The operation mode of the active distribution network (ADN) can effectively reduce the decline in operation stability caused by the high proportion of DG. Therefore this work proposes a bi-layer model for the planning of the electricity–hydrogen hybrid energy storage system (ESS) considering demand response (DR) for ADN. The upper layer takes the minimum load fluctuation maximum user purchase cost satisfaction and user comfort as the goals. Based on the electricity price elasticity matrix model the optimal electricity price formulation strategy is obtained for the lower ESS planning. In the lower layer the optimal ESS planning scheme is obtained with the minimum life cycle cost (LCC) of ESS the voltage fluctuation of ADN and the load fluctuation as the objectives. Finally the MOPSO algorithm is used to test the model and the correctness of the proposed method is verified by the extended IEEE-33 node test system. The simulation results show that the fluctuation in the voltage and load is reduced by 62.13% and 37.06% respectively.

Mar 2022
Publication
New energy vehicles (NEVs) especially electric vehicles (EVs) address the important task of reducing the greenhouse effect. It is particularly important to measure the environmental efficiency of new energy vehicles and the life cycle analysis (LCA) model provides a comprehensive evaluation method of environmental efficiency. To provide researchers with knowledge regarding the research trends of LCA in NEVs a total of 282 related studies were counted from the Web of Science database and analyzed regarding their research contents research preferences and research trends. The conclusion drawn from this research is that the stages of energy resource extraction and collection carrier production and energy transportation maintenance and replacement are not considered to be research links. The stages of material equipment and car transportation and operation equipment settling and forms of use need to be considered in future research. Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (HFCEVs) vehicle type classification the water footprint battery recovery and reuse and battery aging are the focus of further research and comprehensive evaluation combined with more evaluation methods is the direction needed for the optimization of LCA. According to the results of this study regarding EV and hybrid power vehicles (including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and extended range electric vehicles (EREV)) well-to-wheel (WTW) average carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions have been less than those in the same period of gasoline internal combustion engine vehicles (GICEV). However EV and hybrid electric vehicle production CO2 emissions have been greater than those during the same period of GICEV and the total CO2 emissions of EV have been less than during the same period of GICEV.

Publication
This study proposes a novel hybrid solar-gas power and hydrogen-production system which is comprised by the solar tower thermal system gas-steam turbine combined cycle and organic Rankine cycle-based hydrogen-production system. Based on the Ebsilon code the operation processes of the hybrid system are simulated. The results show that the output power and electric efficiency of the hybrid system are 103.9 MW and 41.3% and the daily hydrogen output is 62.2 kg. The operation simulation results of the hybrid system reveal that the gas-steam combined cycle and solar island can both achieve stable operations and the power generation section and hydrogen-production device can both work effectively which means the hybrid system is technically feasible. The exergy estimate results of the hybrid system show that the combustion chamber and solar receiver have the two largest exergy destructions which are 56.5 MW and 45.3 MW. That means the performances of the two components can be further improved. For the hydrogen-production system the exergy destructions of the proton exchange membrane electrolyzer turbine condenser and evaporator of the organic Rankine cycle are 0.156 MW 0.111 MW 2.338 MW and 1.891 MW and the corresponding exergy efficiencies are 51.2% 92.6% 80.7% and 79.5% respectively.
The Role of New Energy in Carbon Neutral
Mar 2021
Publication
Carbon dioxide is an important medium of the global carbon cycle and has the dual properties of realizing the conversion of organic matter in the ecosystem and causing the greenhouse effect. The fixed or available carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is defined as “gray carbon” while the carbon dioxide that cannot be fixed or used and remains in the atmosphere is called “black carbon”. Carbon neutral is the consensus of human development but its implementation still faces many challenges in politics resources technology market and energy structure etc. It is proposed that carbon replacement carbon emission reduction carbon sequestration and carbon cycle are the four main approaches to achieve carbon neutral among which carbon replacement is the backbone. New energy has become the leading role of the third energy conversion and will dominate carbon neutral in the future. Nowadays solar energy wind energy hydropower nuclear energy and hydrogen energy are the main forces of new energy helping the power sector to achieve low carbon emissions. “Green hydrogen” is the reserve force of new energy helping further reduce carbon emissions in industrial and transportation fields. Artificial carbon conversion technology is a bridge connecting new energy and fossil energy effectively reducing the carbon emissions of fossil energy. It is predicted that the peak value of China’s carbon dioxide emissions will reach 110108 t in 2030. The study predicts that China's carbon emissions will drop to 22108 t 33108 t and 44108 t respectively in 2060 according to three scenarios of high medium and low levels. To realize carbon neutral in China seven implementation suggestions have been put forward to build a new “three small and one large” energy structure in China and promote the realization of China's energy independence strategy.
Research on the Hydrogen Consumption of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles Based on the Flowmeter and Short-cut Method
Sep 2022
Publication
Energy consumption is essential for evaluating the competitiveness of fuel cell electric vehicles. A critical step in energy consumption measurement is measuring hydrogen consumption including the mass method the P/T method and the flowmeter method. The flowmeter method has always been a research focus because of its simple operation low cost and solid real-time performance. Current research has shown the accuracy of the flowmeter method under specific conditions. However many factors in the real scenario will influence the test result such as unintended vibration environment temperature and onboard hydrogen capacity calibration. On the other hand the short-cut method is also researched to replace the run-out method to improve test efficiency. To evaluate whether the flowmeter method basing on the short-cut method can genuinely reflect the hydrogen consumption of an actual vehicle we research and test for New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) using the same vehicle. The results show that the short-cut method can save at least 50% of the test time compared with the run-out method. The error of the short-cut method based on the flowmeter for the NEDC working condition is less than 0.1% and for the CLTC working conditions is 8.12%. After adding a throttle valve and a 4L buffer tank the error is reduced to 4.76% from 8.12%. The test results show that hydrogen consumption measurement based on the flowmeter and short-cut method should adopt corresponding solutions according to the scenarios.
Techno-economic Assessment of Electrolytic Hydrogen in China Considering Wind-solar-load Characteristic
Jan 2023
Publication
Hydrogen production by electrolysis is considered an essential means of consuming renewable energy in the future. However the current assessment of the potential of renewable energy electrolysis for hydrogen production is relatively simple and the perspective is not comprehensive. Here we established a Combined Wind and Solar Electrolytic Hydrogen system considering the influence of regional wind-solar-load characteristics and transmission costs to evaluate the hydrogen production potential of 31 provincial-level regions in China in 2050. The results show that in 2050 the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) in China’s provincial regions will still be higher than 10 ¥/kg which is not cost-competitive compared to the current hydrogen production from fossil fuels. It is more cost-effective to deploy wind turbines than photovoltaic in areas with similar wind and solar resources or rich in wind resources. Wind-solar differences impact LCOH equipment capacity configuration and transmission cost composition while load fluctuation significantly impacts LCOH and electricity storage configuration. In addition the sensitivity analysis of 11 technical and economic parameters showed differences in the response performance of LCOH changes to different parameters and the electrolyzer conversion efficiency had the most severe impact. The analysis of subsidy policy shows that for most regions (except Chongqing and Xizang) subsidizing the unit investment cost of wind turbines can minimize LCOH. Nevertheless from the perspective of comprehensive subsidy effect subsidy cost and hydrogen energy development it is more cost-effective to take subsidies for electrolysis equipment with the popularization of hydrogen
Hydrogen Diffusion and Its Effect on Hydrogen Embrittlement in DP Steels with Different Martensite Content
Dec 2020
Publication
The hydrogen diffusion behavior and hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of dual phase (DP) steels with different martensite content were investigated using the slow strain-rate tensile test and hydrogen permeation measurement. Results showed that a logarithmic relationship was established between the hydrogen embrittlement index (IHE) and the effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient (Deff). When the martensite content is low ferrite/ martensite interface behaves as the main trap that captures the hydrogen atoms. Also when the Deff decreases IHE increases with increasing martensite content. However when the martensite content reaches approximately 68.3% the martensite grains start to form a continuous network Deff reaches a plateau and IHE continues to increase. This is mainly related to the reduction of carbon content in martensite and the length of ferrite/martensite interface which promotes the diffusion of hydrogen atoms in martensite and the aggregation of hydrogen atoms at the ferrite/martensite interface. Finally a model describing the mechanism of microstructure-driven hydrogen diffusion with different martensite distribution was established.
The Role of the Argon and Helium Bath Gases on the Detonation Structure of H2/)2 Mixture
Sep 2021
Publication
Recent modeling efforts of non-equilibrium effects in detonations have suggested that hydrogen-based detonations may be affected by vibrational non-equilibrium of the hydrogen and oxygen molecules effects which could explain discrepancies of cell sizes measured experimentally and calculated without relaxation effects. The present study addresses the role of vibrational relaxation in 2H2/O2 detonations by considering two-bath gases argon and helium. These two gases have the same thermodynamic and kinetic effects when relaxation is neglected. However due to the bath gases differences in molecular weight and reduced mass differences which affect the molecular collisions relaxation rates can be changed by approximately 50-70%. Experiments were performed in a narrow channel in mixtures of 2H2/O2/7Ar and 2H2/O2/7He to evaluate the role of the bath gas on detonation cellular structures. The experiments showed differences in velocity deficits and cell sizes for experimental conditions keeping the induction zone length constant in each of the mixtures. These differences were negligible in sensitive mixtures but increased with the increase in velocity deficits while the cell sizes approaching the channel dimensions. Near the limits differences of cell size in two mixtures approached a factor of 2. These differences were however reconciled by accounting for the viscous losses to the tube walls evaluated using a modified version of Mirels' laminar boundary layer theory and generalized Chapman-Jouguet theory for eigenvalue detonations. The experiments suggest that there is an influence of relaxation effects on the cellular structure of detonations which is more sensitive to wall boundary conditions. However the previous works showed that the impact of vibrational non-equilibrium in a mixture of H2/Air is more visible due to the effects of N2 in the air slowest to relax. Previous discrepancies suggested to be indicative of relaxation effects should be reevaluated by the inclusion of wall loss effects.
The Role of Hydrogen in the Corrosion and Cracking of Steels - A Review
Oct 2021
Publication
In many processes of steel industrial including steel manufacture storage and service hydrogen could be absorbed into metallic materials and the absorbed hydrogen seriously impaired its corrosion resistance. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the effects of hydrogen on passive film anodic dissolution pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking and based on the review the mechanism by which hydrogen promotes corrosion of steel and subsequently leads to cracking has been discussed. It is envisaged that hydrogen harms the stability of the passive film and as a result escalates anode’s activation of steel eventually leading to pitting and stress corrosion cracking.
Strategies for the Adoption of Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems: An Exploratory Study in Australia
Aug 2022
Publication
A significant contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions will be enabled through the transition from a centralised fossil fuel system to a decentralised renewable electricity system. However due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy storage is required to provide a suitable response to dynamic loads and manage the excess generated electricity with utilisation during periods of low generation. This paper investigates the use of stationary hydrogen-based energy storage systems for microgrids and distributed energy resource systems. An exploratory study was conducted in Australia based on a mixed methodology. Ten Australian industry experts were interviewed to determine use cases for hydrogen-based energy storage systems’ requirements barriers methods and recommendations. This study suggests that the current cost of the electrolyser fuel cell and storage medium and the current low round-trip efficiency are the main elements inhibiting hydrogen-based energy storage systems. Limited industry and practical experience are barriers to the implementation of hydrogen storage systems. Government support could help scale hydrogen-based energy storage systems among early adopters and enablers. Furthermore collaboration and knowledge sharing could reduce risks allowing the involvement of more stakeholders. Competition and innovation could ultimately reduce the costs increasing the uptake of hydrogen storage systems.
Using Multicriteria Decision Making to Evaluate the Risk of Hydrogen Energy Storage and Transportation in Cities
Jan 2023
Publication
Hydrogen is an environmentally friendly source of renewable energy. Energy generation from hydrogen has not yet been widely commercialized due to issues related to risk management in its storage and transportation. In this paper the authors propose a hybrid multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM)-based method to manage the risks involved in the storage and transportation of hydrogen (RSTH). First we identified the key points of the RSTH by examining the relevant literature and soliciting the opinions of experts and used this to build a prototype of its decision structure. Second we developed a hybrid MCDM approach called the D-ANP that combined the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMENTEL) with the analytic network process (ANP) to obtain the weight of each point of risk. Third we used fuzzy evaluation to assess the level of the RSTH for Beijing China where energy generation using hydrogen is rapidly advancing. The results showed that the skills of the personnel constituted the most important risk-related factor and environmental volatility and the effectiveness of feedback were root factors. These three factors had an important impact on other factors influencing the risk of energy generation from hydrogen. Training and technical assistance can be used to mitigate the risks arising due to differences in the skills of personnel. An appropriate logistics network and segmented transportation for energy derived from hydrogen should be implemented to reduce environmental volatility and integrated supply chain management can help make the relevant feedback more effective.
The Direct Reduction of Iron Ore with Hydrogen
Aug 2022
Publication
The steel industry represents about 7% of the world’s anthropogenic CO2 emissions due to the high use of fossil fuels. The CO2 -lean direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen is considered to offer a high potential to reduce CO2 emissions and this direct reduction of Fe2O3 powder is investigated in this research. The H2 reduction reaction kinetics and fluidization characteristics of fine and cohesive Fe2O3 particles were examined in a vibrated fluidized bed reactor. A smooth bubbling fluidization was achieved. An increase in external force due to vibration slightly increased the pressure drop. The minimum fluidization velocity was nearly independent of the operating temperature. The yield of the direct H2 -driven reduction was examined and found to exceed 90% with a maximum of 98% under the vibration of ~47 Hz with an amplitude of 0.6 mm and operating temperatures close to 500 ◦C. Towards the future of direct steel ore reduction cheap and “green” hydrogen sources need to be developed. H2 can be formed through various techniques with the catalytic decomposition of NH3 (and CH4 ) methanol and ethanol offering an important potential towards production cost yield and environmental CO2 emission reductions.

Publication
As smart grid develops and renewables advance challenges caused by uncertainties of renewables have been seriously threatening the energy system’s safe operation. Nowadays the integrated electric-gas system (IEGS) plays a significant role in promoting the flexibility of modern grid owing to its great characteristic in accommodating renewable energy and coping with fluctuation and uncertainty of the system. And hydrogen as an emerging and clean energy carrier can further enhance the energy coupling of the IEGS and promote carbon neutralization with the development of power-to-hydrogen (P2H) technology and technology of blending hydrogen in the natural gas system. Dealing with the uncertainty of renewables a robust schedule optimization model for the integrated electric and gas systems with blending hydrogen (IEGSH) considering the dynamics of gas is proposed and the iterative solving method based on column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm is implemented to solve the problem. Case studies on the IEGSH consisting of IEEE 39-bus power system and 27-node natural gas system validate the effectiveness of the dynamic energy flow model in depicting the transient process of gas transmission. The effectiveness of the proposed robust day-ahead scheduling model in dealing with the intra-day uncertainty of wind power is also verified. Additionally the carbon emission reduction resulting from the blending of hydrogen is evaluated.

Publication
Hydrogen energy represents a crucial pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality and is a pivotal facet of future strategic emerging industries. The safe and efficient transportation of hydrogen is a key link in the entire chain development of the hydrogen energy industry’s “production storage and transportation”. Mixing hydrogen into natural gas pipelines for transportation is the potential best way to achieve large-scale long-distance safe and efficient hydrogen transportation. Welds are identified as the vulnerable points in natural gas pipelines and compatibility between hydrogen-doped natural gas and existing pipeline welds is a critical technical challenge that affects the global-scale transportation of hydrogen energy. Therefore this article systematically discusses the construction and weld characteristics of hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines the research status of hydrogen damage mechanism and mechanical property strengthening methods of hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline welds and points out the future development direction of hydrogen damage mechanism research in hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline welds. The research results show that: 1 Currently there is a need for comprehensive research on the degradation of mechanical properties in welds made from typical pipe materials on a global scale. It is imperative to systematically elucidate the mechanism of mechanical property degradation due to conventional and hydrogeninduced damage in welds of high-pressure hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines worldwide. 2 The deterioration of mechanical properties in welds of hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines is influenced by various components including hydrogen carbon dioxide and nitrogen. It is necessary to reveal the mechanism of mechanical property deterioration of pipeline welds under the joint participation of multiple damage mechanisms under multi-component gas conditions. 3 Establishing a fundamental database of mechanical properties for typical pipeline steel materials under hydrogen-doped natural gas conditions globally is imperative to form a method for strengthening the mechanical properties of typical high-pressure hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline welds. 4 It is essential to promptly develop relevant standards for hydrogen blending transportation welding technology as well as weld evaluation testing and repair procedures for natural gas pipelines.
Thermal Sprayed Protective Coatings for Bipolar Plates of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Water Electrolysis Cells
Mar 2024
Publication
As one core component in hydrogen fuel cells and water electrolysis cells bipolar plates (BPs) perform multiple important functions such as separating the fuel and oxidant flow providing mechanical support conducting electricity and heat connecting the cell units into a stack etc. On the path toward commercialization the manufacturing costs of bipolar plates have to be substantially reduced by adopting low-cost and easy-to-process metallic materials (e.g. stainless steel aluminum or copper). However these materials are susceptible to electrochemical corrosion under harsh operating conditions resulting in long-term performance degradation. By means of advanced thermal spraying technologies protective coatings can be prepared on bipolar plates so as to inhibit oxidation and corrosion. This paper reviews several typical thermal spraying technologies including atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying for preparing coatings of bipolar plates particularly emphasizing the effect of spraying processes on coating effectiveness. The performance of coatings relies not only on the materials as selected or designed but also on the composition and microstructure practically obtained in the spraying process. The temperature and velocity of in-flight particles have a significant impact on coating quality; therefore precise control over these factors is demanded.

The hydrogen energy industry as one of the most important directions for future energy transformation can promote the sustainable development of the global economy and of society. China has raised the development of hydrogen energy to a strategic position. Based on the patent data in the past two decades this study investigates the collaborative innovation relationships in China’s hydrogen energy field using complex network theory. Firstly patent data filed between 2003 and 2023 are analyzed and compared in terms of time geography and institutional and technological dimensions. Subsequently a patent collaborative innovation network is constructed to explore the fundamental characteristics and evolutionary patterns over five stages. Furthermore centrality measures and community detection algorithms are utilized to identify core entities and innovation alliances within the network which reveal that China’s hydrogen energy industry is drifting toward alliance innovation. The study results show the following: (1) the network has grown rapidly in size and scope over the last two decades and evolved from the initial stage to the multi-center stage before forming innovation alliances; (2) core innovative entities are important supports and bridges for China’s hydrogen energy industry and control most resources and maintain the robustness of the whole network; (3) innovation alliances reveal the closeness of the collaborative relationships between innovative entities and the potential landscape of China’s hydrogen energy industry; and (4) most of the innovation alliances cooperate only on a narrow range of technologies which may hinder the overall sustainable growth of the hydrogen energy industry. Thereafter some suggestions are put forward from the perspective of an industrial chain and innovation chain which may provide a theoretical reference for collaborative innovation and the future development and planning in the field of hydrogen energy in China.
Willingness of Chinese Households to Pay Extra for Hydrogen-fuelled Buses: A Survey Based on Willingness to Pay
Mar 2023
Publication
Hydrogen-fuelled buses play an important role in the construction of low-carbon cities as a means of green travel. Beijing as a pilot city of hydrogen-fuelled buses in China is very important in the promotion of hydrogen-fuelled buses in China. Unfortunately the public acceptance of hydrogen-fuelledfuelled buses and their environmental positive externality value have not been studied. In this paper we investigated the willingness of Beijing households to pay for the promotion of hydrogen-fuelled buses and its influencing factors by means of a web-based questionnaire. The spike model was also used to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for hydrogen buses. The results show that the WTP of Beijing households is CNY 3.19 per trip. The value of a positive environmental externality is approximately CNY 29.15 million per trip. Household income level environmental knowledge individual environmental ethics and perceived behavioural control are the main influencing factors of WTP. Therefore policymakers should strengthen publicity efforts to increase individuals’ environmental awareness and environmental ethics and optimize the layout of hydrogen-fuelled bus schedules and riding experiences to improve individuals’ perceptual and behaviour control. Finally the positive environmental externality value of hydrogen buses should be valued which will help increase investor interest.

With the large-scale integration of intermittent renewable energy generation presented by wind and photovoltaic power the security and stability of power system operations have been challenged. Therefore this article proposes a control strategy of a hydrogen production system based on renewable energy power generation to enable the fast frequency response of a grid. Firstly based on the idea of virtual synchronous control a fast frequency response control transformation strategy for the grid-connected interface of hydrogen production systems for renewable energy power generation is proposed to provide active power support when the grid frequency is disturbed. Secondly based on the influence of VSG’s inertia and damping coefficient on the dynamic characteristics of the system a VSG adaptive control model based on particle swarm optimization is designed. Finally based on the Matlab/Simulink platform a grid-connected simulation model of hydrogen production systems for renewable energy power generation is established. The results show that the interface-transformed electrolytic hydrogen production device can actively respond to the frequency disturbances of the power system and participate in primary frequency control providing active support for the frequency stability of the power system under high-percentage renewable energy generation integration. Moreover the system with parameter optimization has better fast frequency response control characteristics.
