Thermodynamic Modeling of Hydrogen Refueling for Heavy-duty Fuel Cell Buses and Comparison with Aggregated Real Data

The foreseen uptake of hydrogen mobility is a fundamental step towards the decarbonization of the transport sector. Under such premises both refuelling infrastructure and vehicles should be deployed together with improved refuelling protocols. Several studies focus on refuelling the light-duty vehicles with 10 kgH2 up to 700 bar however less known effort is reported for refuelling heavy-duty vehicles with 30–40 kgH2 at 350 bar. The present study illustrates the application of a lumped model to a fuel cell bus tank-to-tank refuelling event tailored upon the real data acquired in the 3Emotion Project. The evolution of the main refuelling quantities such as pressure temperature and mass flow are predicted dynamically throughout the refuelling process as a function of the operating parameters within the safety limits imposed by SAE J2601/2 technical standard. The results show to refuel the vehicle tank from half to full capacity with an Average Pressure Ramp Rate (APRR) equal to 0.03 MPa/s are needed about 10 min. Furthermore it is found that the effect of varying the initial vehicle tank pressure is more significant than changing the ambient temperature on the refuelling performances. In conclusion the analysis of the effect of different APRR from 0.03 to 0.1 MPa/s indicate that is possible to safely reduce the duration of half-to-full refuelling by 62% increasing the APRR value from 0.03 to 0.08 MPa/s.
Renewable Hydrogen Supply Chains: A Planning Matrix and an Agenda for Future Research

Worldwide energy systems are experiencing a transition to more sustainable systems. According to the Hydrogen Roadmap Europe (FCH EU 2019) hydrogen will play an important role in future energy systems due to its ability to support sustainability goals and will account for approximately 13% of the total energy mix in the coming future. Correct hydrogen supply chain (HSC) planning is therefore vital to enable a sustainable transition. However due to the operational characteristics of the HSC its planning is complicated. Renewable hydrogen supply can be diverse: Hydrogen can be produced de-centrally with renewables such as wind and solar energy or centrally by using electricity generated from a hydro power plant with a large volume. Similarly demand for hydrogen can also be diverse with many new applications such as fuels for fuel cell electrical vehicles and electricity generation feedstocks in industrial processes and heating for buildings. The HSC consists of various stages (production storage distribution and applications) in different forms with strong interdependencies which further increase HSC complexity. Finally planning of an HSC depends on the status of hydrogen adoption and market development and on how mature technologies are and both factors are characterised by high uncertainties. Directly adapting the traditional approaches of supply chain planning for HSCs is insufficient. Therefore in this study we develop a planning matrix with related planning tasks leveraging a systematic literature review to cope with the characteristics of HSCs. We focus only on renewable hydrogen due to its relevance to the future low-carbon economy. Furthermore we outline an agenda for future research from the supply chain management perspective in order to support HSC development considering the different phases of HSCs adoption and market development.
An Overview on Safety Issues Related to Hydrogen and Methane Blend Applications in Domestic and Industrial Use

The share of electrical energy hailing from renewable sources in the European electricity mix is increasing. The match between renewable power supply and demand has become the greatest challenge to cope with. Gas infrastructure can accommodate large volumes of electricity converted into gas whenever this supply of renewable power is larger than the grid capacity or than the electricity demand. The Power-to-Gas (P2G) process chain could play a significant role in the future energy system. Renewable electric energy can be transformed into storable hydrogen via electrolysis and subsequent methanation. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the required technical adaptations of the most common devices for end users such as heating plants CHP systems home gas furnaces and cooking surfaces wherever these are fuelled with methane and hydrogen blends in variable percentages by volume. Special attention will be given to issues related to essential safety standards firstly comparing existing Italian and European regulations in this regard and secondly highlighting the potential need for legislation to regulate the suitability of hydrogen methane blends. Finally a list of foreseeable technical solutions will be provided and discussed thoroughly
Technical and Commercial Challenges of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells

This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up high efficiency no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs as this determines the cell losses and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community there is a need for public sensitization as some people have reservations regarding the safety of the technology. This hurdle can be overcome if there is a well-documented risk assessment which also needs to be considered in future research activities.
Proposed Approach to Calculate Safety Distances for Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Italy

In 2021 only 6 hydrogen fuelling station have been built in Italy of which 3 are not operational and only 1 is open to the public while the rest are built in private or industrial areas. While fuelling station which store more than 5000 kg of hydrogen are subjected to the “Seveso Directive” the permitting procedure for refuelling station which store less than the threshold is supervised by the fire brigade command of the province where the station is built. Recently in the effort to easy the permitting procedure to establish new stations a Ministerial Decree was published in the official gazette of the Italian Republic which lists minimum safety features and safety distances that if respected guarantee the approval by the authority. Nevertheless the imposed distances are such that the land required to build the station constitute a barrier rather than a facilitation. Exploiting the possibility introduced by the Decree to calculate safety distances following a Fire Safety Engineering approach a method is proposed for calculation of safety distances. The present paper presents the Italian regulation and describes an approach to calculate the safety distances including an example applied on the dispenser.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Emulator for Power Electronics Testing Applications

This article aims to develop a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer emulator. This emulator is realized through an equivalent electrical scheme. It allows taking into consideration the dynamic operation of PEM electrolyzers which is generally neglected in the literature. PEM electrolyzer dynamics are reproduced by the use of supercapacitors due to the high value of the equivalent double-layer capacitance value. Steady-state and dynamics operations are investigated in this work. The design criteria are addressed. The PEM electrolyzer emulator is validated by using a 400-W commercial PEM electrolyzer. This emulator is conceived to test new DC-DC converters to supply the PEM ELs and their control as well avoiding the risk to damage a real electrolyzer for experiment purposes. The proposed approach is valid both for a single cell and for the whole stack emulation.
Hydrogen Refueling Process: Theory, Modeling, and In-Force Applications

Among the alternative fuels enabling the energy transition hydrogen-based transportation is a sustainable and efficient choice. It finds application both in light-duty and heavy-duty mobility. However hydrogen gas has unique qualities that must be taken into account when employed in such vehicles: high-pressure levels up to 900 bar storage in composite tanks with a temperature limit of 85 ◦C and a negative Joule–Thomson coefficient throughout a wide range of operational parameters. Moreover to perform a refueling procedure that is closer to the driver’s expectations a fast process that requires pre-cooling the gas to −40 ◦C is necessary. The purpose of this work is to examine the major phenomena that occur during the hydrogen refueling process by analyzing the relevant theory and existing modeling methodologies.
Impacts of Renewable Energy Resources on Effectiveness of Grid-Integrated Systems: Succinct Review of Current Challenges and Potential Solution Strategies

This study is aimed at a succinct review of practical impacts of grid integration of renewable energy systems on effectiveness of power networks as well as often employed state-of-the-art solution strategies. The renewable energy resources focused on include solar energy wind energy biomass energy and geothermal energy as well as renewable hydrogen/fuel cells which although not classified purely as renewable resources are a famous energy carrier vital for future energy sustainability. Although several world energy outlooks have suggested that the renewable resources available worldwide are sufficient to satisfy global energy needs in multiples of thousands the different challenges often associated with practical exploitation have made this assertion an illusion to date. Thus more research efforts are required to synthesize the nature of these challenges as well as viable solution strategies hence the need for this review study. First brief overviews are provided for each of the studied renewable energy sources. Next challenges and solution strategies associated with each of them at generation phase are discussed with reference to power grid integration. Thereafter challenges and common solution strategies at the grid/electrical interface are discussed for each of the renewable resources. Finally expert opinions are provided comprising a number of aphorisms deducible from the review study which reveal knowledge gaps in the field and potential roadmap for future research. In particular these opinions include the essential roles that renewable hydrogen will play in future energy systems; the need for multi-sectoral coupling specifically by promoting electric vehicle usage and integration with renewable-based power grids; the need for cheaper energy storage devices attainable possibly by using abandoned electric vehicle batteries for electrical storage and by further development of advanced thermal energy storage systems (overviews of state-of-the-art thermal and electrochemical energy storage are also provided); amongst others.
Combustion Characterization in a Diffusive Gas Turbine Burner for Hydrogen-Compliant Applications

The target of net-zero emissions set by the 2015 Paris Agreement has strongly commissioned the energy production sector to promote decarbonization renewable sources exploitation and systems efficiency. In this framework the utilization of hydrogen as a long-term energy carrier has great potential. This paper is concerned with the combustion characterization in a non-premixed gas turbine burner originally designed for natural gas when it is fed with NG-H2 blends featuring hydrogen content from 0 to 50% in volume. The final aim is to retrofit a 40 MW gas turbine. Starting from the operational data of the engine a CFD model of the steady-state combustion process has been developed with reference to the base load NG conditions by reducing the fuel mass-flow rate by up to 17% to target the baseline turbine inlet temperature. When the fuel is blended with hydrogen for a given temperature at turbine inlet an increase in the peak temperature up to 800 K is obtained if no countermeasures are taken. Furthermore the flame results are more intense and closer to the injector in the case of hydrogen blending. The results of this work hint at the necessity of carefully analyzing the possible NOx compensation strategies as well as the increased thermal stresses on the injector.
Solid-State Hydrogen Storage Systems and the Relevance of a Gender Perspective

This paper aims at addressing the exploitation of solid-state carriers for hydrogen storage with attention paid both to the technical aspects through a wide review of the available integrated systems and to the social aspects through a preliminary overview of the connected impacts from a gender perspective. As for the technical perspective carriers to be used for solid-state hydrogen storage for various applications can be classified into two classes: metal and complex hydrides. Related crystal structures and corresponding hydrogen sorption properties are reviewed and discussed. Fundamentals of thermodynamics of hydrogen sorption evidence the key role of the enthalpy of reaction which determines the operating conditions (i.e. temperatures and pressures). In addition it rules the heat to be removed from the tank during hydrogen absorption and to be delivered to the tank during hydrogen desorption. Suitable values for the enthalpy of hydrogen sorption reaction for operating conditions close to ambient (i.e. room temperature and 1–10 bar of hydrogen) are close to 30 kJ·molH2 −1 . The kinetics of the hydrogen sorption reaction is strongly related to the microstructure and to the morphology (i.e. loose powder or pellets) of the carriers. Usually the kinetics of the hydrogen sorption reaction is rather fast and the thermal management of the tank is the rate-determining step of the processes. As for the social perspective the paper arguments that as it occurs with the exploitation of other renewable innovative technologies a wide consideration of the social factors connected to these processes is needed to reach a twofold objective: To assess the extent to which a specific innovation might produce positive or negative impacts in the recipient socioeconomic system and from a sociotechnical perspective to explore the potential role of the social components and dynamics in fostering the diffusion of the innovation itself. Within the social domain attention has been paid to address the underexplored relationship between the gender perspective and the enhancement of hydrogen-related energy storage systems. This relationship is taken into account both in terms of the role of women in triggering the exploitation of hydrogen-based storage playing as experimenter and promoter and in terms of the intertwined impact of this innovation in their current conditions at work and in daily life.
Hydrogen Production from Sea Wave for Alternative Energy Vehicles for Public Transport in Trapani (Italy)

The coupling of renewable energy and hydrogen technologies represents in the mid-term a very interesting way to match the tasks of increasing the reliable exploitation of wind and sea wave energy and introducing clean technologies in the transportation sector. This paper presents two different feasibility studies: the first proposes two plants based on wind and sea wave resource for the production storage and distribution of hydrogen for public transportation facilities in the West Sicily; the second applies the same approach to Pantelleria (a smaller island) including also some indications about solar resource. In both cases all buses will be equipped with fuel-cells. A first economic analysis is presented together with the assessment of the avoidable greenhouse gas emissions during the operation phase. The scenarios addressed permit to correlate the demand of urban transport to renewable resources present in the territories and to the modern technologies available for the production of hydrogen from renewable energies. The study focuses on the possibility of tapping the renewable energy potential (wind and sea wave) for the hydrogen production by electrolysis. The use of hydrogen would significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter and greenhouse gases in urban districts under analysis. The procedures applied in the present article as well as the main equations used are the result of previous applications made in different technical fields that show a good replicability.
Modelling and Performance Analysis of an Autonomous Marine Vehicle Powered by a Fuel Cell Hybrid Powertrain

This paper describes the implementation of a hydrogen-based system for an autonomous surface vehicle in an effort to reduce environmental impact and increase driving range. In a suitable computational environment the dynamic electrical model of the entire hybrid powertrain consisting of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell a hydrogen metal hydride storage system a lithium battery two brushless DC motors and two control subsystems is implemented. The developed calculation tool is used to perform the dynamic analysis of the hybrid propulsion system during four different operating journeys investigating the performance achieved to examine the obtained performance determine the feasibility of the work runs and highlight the critical points. During the trips the engine shows fluctuating performance trends while the energy consumption reaches 1087 Wh for the fuel cell (corresponding to 71 g of hydrogen) and 370 Wh for the battery consuming almost all the energy stored on board.
The Role of the Flow Field Generated by Venting Process on the Pressure Time History of a Vented Deflagration

Vented deflagrations are one of the most challenging phenomenon to be replicated numerically in order to predict its resulting pressure time history. As a matter of fact a number of different phenomena can contribute to modify the burning velocity of a gas mixture undergoing a deflagration especially when the flame velocity is considerably lower than the speed of sound. In these conditions acceleration generated by both the flow field induced by the expanding flame and from discontinuities as the vent opening and the venting of the combustion products affect the burning velocity and the burning behaviour of the flame. In particular the phenomena affecting the pressure time history of a deflagration after the flame front reaches the vent area such as flame acoustic interaction and local pressure peaks seem to be closely related to a change in the burning behaviour induced by the venting process. Flame acoustic interaction and local pressure peaks arise as a consequence of the change in the burning behaviour of the flame. This paper analyses the video recording of the flame front produced during the TP experimental campaign performed by UNIPI in the project HySEA to analyse qualitatively the contribution of the generated flow field in a vented deflagration in its pressure-time history.
Operation of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Based Power System with Ammonia as a Fuel: Experimental Test and System Design

Ammonia has strong potentialities as sustainable fuel for energy applications. NH3 is carbon free and can be synthetized from renewable energy sources (RES). In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells NH3 reacts electrochemically thereby avoiding the production of typical combustion pollutants such as NOx. In this study an ammonia-fueled solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) system design is proposed and a thermodynamic model is developed to evaluate its performance. A SOFC short stack was operated with NH3 in a wide range of conditions. Experimental results are implemented in the thermodynamic model. Electrical efficiency of 52.1% based on ammonia Lower Heating Value is calculated at a net power density of 0.36 W cmFC −2 . The operating conditions of the after burner and of the ammonia decomposition reactor are studied by varying the values of specific parameters. The levelized cost of energy of 0.221 $ kWh−1 was evaluated as introduced by the International Energy Agency for a system that operates at nominal conditions and at a reference power output of 100 kW. This supports the feasibility of ammonia-fueled SOFC systems with reference to the carbon free energy market specifically considering the potential development of green ammonia production.
Sizing and Performance Analysis of Hydrogen- and Battery-Based Powertrains, Integrated into a Passenger Train for a Regional Track, Located in Calabria (Italy)

In order to decarbonize the rail industry the development of innovative locomotives with the ability to use multiple energy sources constituting hybrid powertrains plays a central role in transitioning from conventional diesel trains. In this paper four configurations based on suitable combinations of fuel cells and/or batteries are designed to replace or supplement a diesel/overhead line powertrain on a real passenger train (the Hitachi Blues) tested on an existing regional track the Catanzaro Lido–Reggio Calabria line (Italy) managed by Trenitalia SpA. (Italy). The configurations (namely battery–electrified line full-battery fuel cell–battery–electrified line and fuel cell–battery) are first sized with the intention of completing a round trip then integrated on board with diesel engine replacement in mind and finally occupy a portion of the passenger area within two locomotives. The achieved performance is thoroughly examined in terms of fuel cell efficiency (greater than 47%) hydrogen consumption (less than 72 kg) braking energy recovery (approximately 300 kWh) and battery interval SOC.
Sector Coupling and Business Models Towards Sustainability: The Case of the Hydrogen Vehicle Industry

The concept of sector coupling has been gaining increased momentum in political discourses during 18 the past few years but it has only recently received the attention of international academics. The 19 private sector is particularly relevant to foster sector coupling through entrepreneurial action – 20 specifically innovative business models for more sustainable technologies are needed to promote a 21 transition towards more sustainability. So far however the literature on business models from a 22 sector coupling perspective is scarce yet strongly emerging. To address the identified research gaps 23 and enhance the current knowledge on the emerging hydrogen vehicle industry and sector coupling 24 this study adopts a qualitative and exploratory research approach and builds on information gained 25 in 103 semi-structured interviews to discuss emerging business models in Germany. In particular 33 26 business cases have been analyzed. Anchoring business model theory to the concept of sector 27 coupling this study identifies 12 business model archetypes in the emerging hydrogen vehicle 28 industry and its value chain. It can be shown that while the market is still emerging and the market 29 players are not defined and are evolving companies are currently engaged in finding their position 30 along the value chain fostering vertical integration and promoting cooperation between the 31 different sectors. While this study is relevant for both the academia and the industry it is particularly 2 32 interesting for policy makers shaping the future of sustainable development specifically considering 33 integrated energy systems.
Redrawing the EU’s Energy Relations: Getting it Right with African Renewable Hydrogen

In this paper we will explore the state of play with renewable hydrogen development in Africa through some case studies from AGHA members and the scope for growth moving forward. In so doing we will address some of the prevailing challenges to build out of a clean hydrogen economy that could be foreseen already at this early stage and look for potential solutions building on what is already in place in other sectors. We make the case that there should be four key areas of focus moving forward on African-EU hydrogen collaboration. Firstly (i) foreign direct investment (FDI) should be de-risked through offtake mechanisms and public-private partnerships (ii) flagship projects should lead the way (iii) large parts of the value chain should remain in Africa (iv) wider ‘democratisation’ and accessibility of the sector should be encouraged
Potentialities of Hydrogen Enriched Natural Gas for Residential Heating Decarbonization and Impact Analysis on Premixed Boilers

Nowadays decarbonization of energy economy is a topical theme and several pathways are under discussion. Gaseous fuels will play a primary role during this transition and the production of renewable or low carbon-impact gaseous fuels is necessary to deal with this challenge. Decarbonization will be sustained by an increasing share of renewables which production intermittency can be critical for the energy system. Renewable hydrogen generation is a viable solution since this energy vector can be produced from electricity with a fast response and injected in the existing natural gas infrastructures granting storage capacity and easy transport. Parallelly to the renewable-based energy production fossil-based energy can be exploited with a low carbon impact using methane from reservoirs to produce hydrogen capturing CO2. The mentioned scenarios will lead to hydrogen enrichment of natural gas which impact on the infrastructures is being actively studied. The effect on end-user devices instead is poorly analysed but is fundamental to be assessed. This paper highlights the impact on the widely used premixed condensing boilers which will be fired with hydrogen enriched natural gas in the near future and the changes required to components.
The Role of Hydrogen in the Optimal Design of Off-grid Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems

The optimal design of off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) is a challenging task which often involves conflicting goals to be faced. In this work levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and CO2 emissions have been addressed simultaneously by using the ε-constraint method together with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Cost-emissions Pareto fronts of different HRES configurations were developed to gain greater awareness about the potential of renewable-based energy systems in off-grid applications. Various combinations of the following components were investigated: photovoltaic panels wind turbines batteries hydrogen and diesel generators. The hydrogen-based system comprises an electrolyzer to convert the excess renewable energy into hydrogen a pressurized tank for H2 storage and a fuel cell for the reconversion of hydrogen into electricity during renewable energy deficits. Electrolyzer and fuel cell devices were modelled by means of part-load performance curves. Size-dependent costs and component lifetimes as a function of the cumulative operational duty were also considered for a more accurate techno-economic assessment. The proposed methodology was applied to the Froan islands (Norway) which were chosen as a reference case study since they are well representative of many other insular microgrid environments in Northern Europe. Results from the sizing simulations revealed that energy storage devices are key components to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels. In particular the hydrogen storage system is crucial in off-grid areas to enhance the RES penetration and avoid a sharp increase in the cost of energy. Hydrogen in fact allows the battery and RES technologies not to be oversized thanks to its cost-effective long-term storage capability. Concerning the extreme case with no diesel the cheapest configuration which includes both batteries and hydrogen has an LCOE of 0.41 €/kWh. This value is around 35% lower than the LCOE of a system with only batteries as energy storage.
Towards a Climate-neutral Energy System in the Netherlands

This paper presents two different scenarios for the energy system of the Netherlands that achieve the Dutch government’s national target of near net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2050. Using the system optimisation model OPERA the authors have analysed the technology sector and cost implications of the assumptions underlying these scenarios. While the roles of a number of key energy technology and emission mitigation options are strongly dependent on the scenario and cost assumptions the analysis yields several common elements that appear in both scenarios and that consistently appear under differing cost assumptions. For example one of the main options for the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy system is electrification of energy use in end-use sectors and for the production of renewable hydrogen with electrolysers. As a result the level of electricity generation in 2050 will be three to four times higher than present generation levels. Ultimately renewable energy – particularly from wind turbines and solar panels – is projected to account for the vast majority of electricity generation around 99% in 2050. Imbalances between supply and demand resulting from this variable renewable electricity production can be managed via flexibility options including demand response and energy storage. Hydrogen also becomes an important energy carrier notably for transportation and in industry. If import prices are lower than costs of domestic production from natural gas with CCS or through electrolysis from renewable electricity (2.4–2.7 €/kgH2) the use of hydrogen increases especially in the built environment.
Roadmap to Achieving Sustainable Development via Green Hydrogen

The conversion to renewable energy can be achieved when cities and communities start to depend on sustainable resources capable of providing for the basic needs of the community along with a reduction in the daily problems and issues that people face. These issues such as poverty hunger sanitation and economic difficulties are highlighted in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aim to limit and eradicate these problems along with other environmental obstacles including climate change and Greenhouse Gases (GHGs). These SDGs containing 17 goals target each sector and provide propositions to solve such devastating problems. Hydrogen contributes to the targets of these sustainable developments since through its implementation in different industries the levels of GHG will drop and thus contribute to the climate change which Earth is facing. Further through the usage of such resources many job opportunities will also be developed thus enhancing the economy and lifting the status of society. This paper classifies the four different types of hydrogen and outlines the differences between them. The paper then emphasizes the importance of green hydrogen use within the shipping industry transportation and infrastructure along with economic and social development through job opportunities. Furthermore this paper provides case studies tackling green hydrogen status in the United Kingdom United States of America and European Union as well as Africa United Arab of Emirates and Asia. Finally challenges and recommendations concerning the green hydrogen industry are addressed. This paper aims to relate the use of green hydrogen to the direct and indirect goals of SDG.
Development of a Hydrogen Valley for Exploitation of Green Hydrogen in Central Italy

Green hydrogen exploitation plays a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen in fact provides a number of key benefits for the energy system due to its integrability with other clean technologies for energy production and consumption. This paper is aimed at presenting the project of recovery of an abandoned industrial area located in central Italy by developing a site for the production of green hydrogen. To this aim the analysis of the territorial and industrial context of the area allowed us to design the project phases and to define the sizing criteria of the hydrogen production plant. The results of a preliminary cost–benefit analysis show that a huge initial investment is required and that in the short term the project is sustainable only with a very large public grant. On the other hand in the long term the project is sustainable and the benefits significantly overcome the costs.
Case Studies of Energy Storage with Fuel Cells and Batteries for Stationary and Mobile Applications

In this paper hydrogen coupled with fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries are considered as alternative energy storage methods. Their application on a stationary system (i.e. energy storage for a family house) and a mobile system (i.e. an unmanned aerial vehicle) will be investigated. The stationary systems designed for off-grid applications were sized for photovoltaic energy production in the area of Turin Italy to provide daily energy of 10.25 kWh. The mobile systems to be used for high crane inspection were sized to have a flying range of 120 min one being equipped with a Li-ion battery and the other with a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell. The systems were compared from an economical point of view and a life cycle assessment was performed to identify the main contributors to the environmental impact. From a commercial point of view the fuel cell and the electrolyzer being niche products result in being more expensive with respect to the Li-ion batteries. On the other hand the life cycle assessment (LCA) results show the lower burdens of both technologies.
Numerical Investigation of Thermal Hazards from Under-expanded Hydrogen Jet Fires using a New Scheme for the Angular Discretization of the Radiative Intensity

In the context of a numerical investigation of thermal hazards from two under-expanded hydrogen jet fires results from a newly-developed thermal radiation module of the ADREA-HF computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code were validated against two physical experiments. The first experiment was a vertical under-expanded hydrogen jet fire at 170 bar with the objective of the numerical investigation being to capture the spatial distribution of the radial radiative heat flux at a given time instant. In the second case a horizontal under-expanded hydrogen jet fire at 340 bar was considered. Here the objective was to capture the temporal evolution of the radial radiative heat flux at selected fixed points in space. The numerical study employs the eddy dissipation model for combustion and the finite volume method (FVM) for the calculation of the radiative intensity. The FVM was implemented using a novel angular discretization scheme. By dividing the unit sphere into an arbitrary number of exactly equal angular control volumes this new scheme allows for more flexibility and efficiency. A demonstration of numerical convergence as a function the number of both spatial and angular control volumes was performed.
A Novel Optimal Power Control for a City Transit Hybrid Bus Equipped with a Partitioned Hydrogen Fuel Cell Stack

The development of more sustainable and zero-emissions collective transport solutions could play a very important measure in the near future within smart city policies. This paper tries to give a contribution to this aim proposing a novel approach to fuel cell vehicle design and operation. Traditional difficulties experienced in fuel cell transient operation are in fact normally solved in conventional vehicle prototypes through the hybridization of the propulsion system and with the complete fulfillment of transients in road energy demand through a high-capacity onboard energy storage device. This makes it normally necessary to use Li-ion battery solutions accepting their restrictions in terms of weight costs energy losses limited lifetime and environmental constraints. The proposed solution instead introduces a partitioning of the hydrogen fuel cell (FC) and novel optimal power control strategy with the aim of limiting the capacity of the energy storage still avoiding FC transient operation. The limited capacity of the resulting energy storage systems which instead has to answer higher power requests makes it possible to consider the utilization of a high-speed flywheel energy storage system (FESS) in place of high energy density Li-ion batteries. The proposed control strategy was validated by vehicle simulations based on a modular and parametric model; input data were acquired experimentally on an operating electric bus in real traffic conditions over an urban bus line. Simulation results highlight that the proposed control strategy makes it possible to obtain an overall power output for the FC stacks which better follows road power demands and a relevant downsizing of the FESS device.
Numerical Modeling of Energy Systems Based on Micro Gas Turbine: A Review

In the context of the great research pulse on clean energy transition distributed energy systems have a key role especially in the case of integration of both renewable and traditional energy sources. The stable interest in small-scale gas turbines can further increase owing to their flexibility in both operation and fuel supply. Since their not-excellent electrical efficiency research activities on micro gas turbine (MGT) are focused on the performance improvements that are achievable in several ways like modifying the Brayton cycle integrating two or more plants using cleaner fuels. Hence during the last decades the growing interest in MGT-based energy systems encouraged the development of many numerical approaches aimed to provide a reliable and effective prediction of the energy systems’ behavior. Indeed numerical modeling can help to individuate potentialities and issues of each enhanced layout or hybrid energy system and this review aims to discuss the various layout solutions proposed by researchers with particular attention to recent publications highlighting the adopted modeling approaches and methods.
Energy Storage in Urban Areas: The Role of Energy Storage Facilities, a Review

Positive Energy Districts can be defined as connected urban areas or energy-efficient and flexible buildings which emit zero greenhouse gases and manage surpluses of renewable energy production. Energy storage is crucial for providing flexibility and supporting renewable energy integration into the energy system. It can balance centralized and distributed energy generation while contributing to energy security. Energy storage can respond to supplement demand provide flexible generation and complement grid development. Photovoltaics and wind turbines together with solar thermal systems and biomass are widely used to generate electricity and heating respectively coupled with energy system storage facilities for electricity (i.e. batteries) or heat storage using latent or sensible heat. Energy storage technologies are crucial in modern grids and able to avoid peak charges by ensuring the reliability and efficiency of energy supply while supporting a growing transition to nondepletable power sources. This work aims to broaden the scientific and practical understanding of energy storage in urban areas in order to explore the flexibility potential in adopting feasible solutions at district scale where exploiting the space and resource-saving systems. The main objective is to present and critically discuss the available options for energy storage that can be used in urban areas to collect and distribute stored energy. The concerns regarding the installation and use of Energy Storage Systems are analyzed by referring to regulations and technical and environmental requirements as part of broader distribution systems or as separate parts. Electricity heat energy and hydrogen are the most favorable types of storage. However most of them need new regulations technological improvement and dissemination of knowledge to all people with the aim of better understanding the benefits provided.
LCA of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Considering Different Power System Architectures

Fuel cell electric vehicles are a promising solution for reducing the environmental impacts of the automotive sector; however there are still some key points to address in finding the most efficient and less impactful implementation of this technology. In this work three electrical architectures of fuel cell electric vehicles were modeled and compared in terms of the environmental impacts of their manufacturing and use phases. The three architectures differ in terms of the number and position of the DC/DC converters connecting the battery and the fuel cell to the electric motor. The life cycle assessment methodology was employed to compute and compare the impacts of the three vehicles. A model of the production of the main components of vehicles and fuel cell stacks as well as of the production of hydrogen fuel was constructed and the impacts were calculated using the program SimaPro. Eleven impact categories were considered when adopting the ReCiPe 2016 midpoint method and the EF (adapted) method was exploited for a final comparison. The results highlighted the importance of the converters and their influence on fuel consumption which was identified as the main factor in the comparison of the environmental impacts of the vehicle.
Flexible Power and Biomass-To-Methanol Plants With Different Gasification Technologies

The competitiveness of biofuels may be increased by integrating biomass gasification plants with electrolysis units which generate hydrogen to be combined with carbon-rich syngas. This option allows increasing the yield of the final product by retaining a higher amount of biogenic carbon and improving the resilience of the energy sector by favoring electric grid services and sector coupling. This article illustrates a techno-economic comparative analysis of three flexible power and biomass to methanol plants based on different gasification technologies: direct gasification indirect gasification and sorptionenhanced gasification. The design and operational criteria of each plant are conceived to operate both without green hydrogen addition (baseline mode) and with hydrogen addition (enhanced mode) following an intermittent use of the electrolysis system which is turned on when the electricity price allows an economically viable hydrogen production. The methanol production plants include a gasification section syngas cleaning conditioning and compression section methanol synthesis and purification and heat recovery steam cycle to be flexibly operated. Due to the high oxygen demand in the gasifier the direct gasification-based plant obtains a great advantage to be operated between a minimum load to satisfy the oxygen demand at high electricity prices and a maximum load to maximize methanol production at low electricity prices. This allows avoiding large oxygen storages with significant benefits for Capex and safety issues. The analysis reports specific fixed-capital investments between 1823 and 2048 €/kW of methanol output in the enhanced operation and LCOFs between 29.7 and 31.7 €/GJLHV. Economic advantages may be derived from a decrease in the electrolysis capital investment especially for the direct gasification-based plants which employ the greatest sized electrolyzer. Methanol breakeven selling prices range between 545 and 582 €/t with the 2019 reference Denmark electricity price curve and between 484 and 535 €/t with an assumed modified electricity price curve of a future energy mix with increased penetration of intermittent renewables.
Carbon Footprint Enhancement of an Agricultural Telehandler through the Application of a Fuel Cell Powertrain

The growing awareness about climate change and environmental pollution is pushing the industrial and academic world to investigate more sustainable solutions to reduce the impact of anthropic activities. As a consequence a process of electrification is involving all kind of vehicles with a view to gradually substitute traditional powertrains that emit several pollutants in the exhaust due to the combustion process. In this context fuel cell powertrains are a more promising strategy with respect to battery electric alternatives where productivity and endurance are crucial. It is important to replace internal combustion engines in those vehicles such as the those in the sector of NonRoad Mobile Machinery. In the present paper a preliminary analysis of a fuel cell powertrain for a telehandler is proposed. The analysis focused on performance fuel economy durability applicability and environmental impact of the vehicle. Numerical models were built in MATLAB/Simulink and a simple power follower strategy was developed with the aim of reducing components degradation and to guarantee a charge sustaining operation. Simulations were carried out regarding both peak power conditions and a typical real work scenario. The simulations’ results showed that the fuel cell powertrain was able to achieve almost the same performances without excessive stress on its components. Indeed a degradation analysis was conducted showing that the fuel cell system can achieve satisfactory durability. Moreover a Well-to-Wheel approach was adopted to evaluate the benefits in terms of greenhouse gases of adopting the fuel cell system. The results of the analysis demonstrated that even if considering grey hydrogen to feed the fuel cell system the proposed powertrain can reduce the equivalent CO2 emissions of 69%. This reduction can be further enhanced using hydrogen from cleaner production processes. The proposed preliminary analysis demonstrated that fuel cell powertrains can be a feasible solution to substitute traditional systems on off-road vehicles even if a higher investment cost might be required.
Integration of Renewable Hydrogen Production in Steelworks Off-Gases for the Synthesis of Methanol and Methane

The steel industry is among the highest carbon-emitting industrial sectors. Since the steel production process is already exhaustively optimized alternative routes are sought in order to increase carbon efficiency and reduce these emissions. During steel production three main carbon-containing off-gases are generated: blast furnace gas coke oven gas and basic oxygen furnace gas. In the present work the addition of renewable hydrogen by electrolysis to those steelworks off-gases is studied for the production of methane and methanol. Different case scenarios are investigated using AspenPlusTM flowsheet simulations which differ on the end-product the feedstock flowrates and on the production of power. Each case study is evaluated in terms of hydrogen and electrolysis requirements carbon conversion hydrogen consumption and product yields. The findings of this study showed that the electrolysis requirements surpass the energy content of the steelwork’s feedstock. However for the methanol synthesis cases substantial improvements can be achieved if recycling a significant amount of the residual hydrogen.
A Rational Approach to the Ecological Transition in the Cruise Market: Technologies and Design Compromises for the Fuel Switch

Supporting policies to achieve a green revolution and ecological transition is a global trend. Although the maritime transport of goods and people can rightly be counted among the least polluting sectors much can be done to further reduce its environmental footprint. Moreover to boost the ecological transition of vessels a whole series of international regulations and national laws have been promulgated. Among these the most impactful on both design and operational management of ships concern the containment of air-polluting emissions in terms of GHG NOx SOx and PM. To address this challenge it might seem that many technologies already successfully used in other transport sectors could be applied. However the peculiar characteristics of ships make this statement not entirely true. In fact technological solutions recently adopted for example in the automotive sector must deal with the large size of vessels and the consequent large amount of energy necessary for their operation. In this paper with reference to the case study of a medium/large-sized passenger cruise ship the use of different fuels (LNG ammonia hydrogen) and technologies (internal combustion engines fuel cells) for propulsion and energy generation on board will be compared. By imposing the design constraint of not modifying the payload and the speed of the ship the criticalities linked to the use of one fuel rather than another will be highlighted. The current limits of application of some fuels will be made evident with reference to the state of maturity of the relevant technologies. Furthermore the operational consequences in terms of autonomy reduction will be presented. The obtained results underline the necessity for shipowners and shipbuilders to reflect on the compromises required by the challenges of the ecological transition which will force them to choose between reducing payload or reducing performance.
Experimental Study of Cycle-by-cycle Variations in a Spark Ignition Internal Combustion Engine Fueled with Hydrogen

High fluctuations in the combustion process from one cycle to another referred to as cycle-by-cycle variations can have adverse effects on internal combustion engine performances particularly in spark ignition (SI) engines. These effects encompass incomplete combustion the potential for misfires and adverse impacts on fuel economy. Furthermore the cycle-by-cycle variations can also affect a vehicle’s drivability and overall comfort especially when operating under lean-burn conditions. Although many cycle-by-cycle analyses have been investigated extensively in the past there is limited in-depth knowledge available regarding the causes of cycle-by-cycle (CbC) variations in hydrogen lean-burn SI engines. Trying to contribute to this topic the current study presents a comprehensive analysis of the CbC variations based on the cylinder pressure data. The study was carried out employing a hydrogen single-cylinder research SI engine. The experiments were performed by varying more than fifty operating conditions including the variations in lambda spark advance boost pressure and exhaust gas recirculation however the load and speed were kept constant throughout the experimental campaign. The results indicate that pressure exhibits significant variations during the combustion process and minor variations during non-combustion processes. In the period from the inlet valve close till the start of combustion pressure exhibits the least variations. The coefficient of variation of pressure (COVP) curve depicts three important points in H2-ICE as well: global minima global maxima and second local minima. The magnitude of the COVP curve changes across all the operating conditions however the shape of the COVP curve remains unchanged across all the operating conditions indicating its independence from the operating condition in an H2-ICE. This study presents an alternative approach for a quick combustion analysis of hydrogen engines. Without the need for more complex methodologies like heat release rate analysis the presented cylinder pressure cycle-by-cycle analysis enables a quick and precise identification of primary combustion features (start of combustion center of combustion end of combustion and operation condition stability). Additionally the engine control unit could implement these procedures to automatically adjust cycle-by-cycle variations therefore increasing engine efficiency.
Environmental Implications and Levelized Cost Analysis of E-fuel Production under Photovoltaic Energy, Direct Air Capture, and Hydrogen

The ecological transition in the transport sector is a major challenge to tackle environmental pollution and European legislation will mandate zero-emission new cars from 2035. To reduce the impact of petrol and diesel vehicles much emphasis is being placed on the potential use of synthetic fuels including electrofuels (e-fuels). This research aims to examine a levelised cost (LCO) analysis of e-fuel production where the energy source is renewable. The energy used in the process is expected to come from a photovoltaic plant and the other steps required to produce e-fuel: direct air capture electrolysis and Fischer-Tropsch process. The results showed that the LCOe-fuel in the baseline scenario is around 3.1 €/l and this value is mainly influenced by the energy production component followed by the hydrogen one. Sensitivity scenario and risk analyses are also conducted to evaluate alternative scenarios and it emerges that in 84% of the cases LCOe-fuel ranges between 2.8 €/l and 3.4 €/l. The findings show that the current cost is not competitive with fossil fuels yet the development of e-fuels supports environmental protection. The concept of pragmatic sustainability incentive policies technology development industrial symbiosis economies of scale and learning economies can reduce this cost by supporting the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
Toward Sustainability: An Overview of the Use of Green Hydrogen in the Agriculture and Livestock Sector

The agro-livestock sector produces about one third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Since more energy is needed to meet the growing demand for food and the industrial revolution in agriculture renewable energy sources could improve access to energy resources and energy security reduce dependence on fossil fuels and reduce GHG emissions. Hydrogen production is a promising energy technology but its deployment in the global energy system is lagging. Here we analyzed the theoretical and practical application of green hydrogen generated by electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources in the agro-livestock sector. Green hydrogen is at an early stage of development in most applications and barriers to its large-scale deployment remain. Appropriate policies and financial incentives could make it a profitable technology for the future.
Solar Hydrogen for High Capacity, Dispatchable, Long-distance Energy transmission – A Case Study for Injection in the Greenstream Natural Gas Pipeline

This paper presents the results of techno-economic modelling for hydrogen production from a photovoltaic battery electrolyser system (PBES) for injection into a natural gas transmission line. Mellitah in Libya connected to Gela in Italy by the Greenstream subsea gas transmission line is selected as the location for a case study. The PBES includes photovoltaic (PV) arrays battery electrolyser hydrogen compressor and large-scale hydrogen storage to maintain constant hydrogen volume fraction in the pipeline. Two PBES configurations with different large-scale storage methods are evaluated: PBESC with compressed hydrogen stored in buried pipes and PBESL with liquefied hydrogen stored in spherical tanks. Simulated hourly PV electricity generation is used to calculate the specific hourly capacity factor of a hypothetical PV array in Mellitah. This capacity factor is then used with different PV sizes for sizing the PBES. The levelised cost of delivered hydrogen (LCOHD) is used as the key techno-economic parameter to optimise the size of the PBES by equipment sizing. The costs of all equipment except the PV array and batteries are made to be a function of electrolyser size. The equipment sizes are deemed optimal if PBES meets hydrogen demand at the minimum LCOHD. The techno-economic performance of the PBES is evaluated for four scenarios of fixed and constant hydrogen volume fraction targets in the pipeline: 5% 10% 15% and 20%. The PBES can produce up to 106 kilotonnes of hydrogen per year to meet the 20% target at an LCOHD of 3.69 €/kg for compressed hydrogen storage (PBESC) and 2.81 €/kg for liquid hydrogen storage (PBESL). Storing liquid hydrogen at large-scale is significantly cheaper than gaseous hydrogen even with the inclusion of a significantly larger PV array that is required to supply additional electrcitiy for liquefaction.
An Insight into Underground Hydrogen Storage in Italy

Hydrogen is a key energy carrier that could play a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Hydrogen-related technologies are considered flexible solutions to support the large-scale implementation of intermittent energy supply from renewable sources by using renewable energy to generate green hydrogen during periods of low demand. Therefore a short-term increase in demand for hydrogen as an energy carrier and an increase in hydrogen production are expected to drive demand for large-scale storage facilities to ensure continuous availability. Owing to the large potential available storage space underground hydrogen storage offers a viable solution for the long-term storage of large amounts of energy. This study presents the results of a survey of potential underground hydrogen storage sites in Italy carried out within the H2020 EU Hystories “Hydrogen Storage In European Subsurface” project. The objective of this work was to clarify the feasibility of the implementation of large-scale storage of green hydrogen in depleted hydrocarbon fields and saline aquifers. By analysing publicly available data mainly well stratigraphy and logs we were able to identify onshore and offshore storage sites in Italy. The hydrogen storage capacity in depleted gas fields currently used for natural gas storage was estimated to be around 69.2 TWh.
Chemical Kinetic Analysis of High-Pressure Hydrogen Ignition and Combustion toward Green Aviation

In the framework of the “Multidisciplinary Optimization and Regulations for Low-boom and Environmentally Sustainable Supersonic aviation” project pursued by a consortium of European government and academic institutions coordinated by Politecnico di Torino under the European Commission Horizon 2020 financial support the Italian Aerospace Research Centre is computationally investigating the high-pressure hydrogen/air kinetic combustion in the operative conditions typically encountered in supersonic aeronautic ramjet engines. This task is being carried out starting from the zero-dimensional and one-dimensional chemical kinetic assessment of the complex and strongly pressure-sensitive ignition behavior and flame propagation characteristics of hydrogen combustion through the validation against experimental shock tube and laminar flame speed measurements. The 0D results indicate that the kinetic mechanism by Politecnico di Milano and the scheme formulated by Kéromnès et al. provide the best matching with the experimental ignition delay time measurements carried out in high-pressure shock tube strongly argon-diluted reaction conditions. Otherwise the best behavior in terms of laminar flame propagation is achieved by the Mueller scheme while the other investigated kinetic mechanisms fail to predict the flame speeds at elevated pressures. This confirms the non-linear and intensive pressure-sensitive behavior of hydrogen combustion especially in the critical high-pressure and low-temperature region which is hard to be described by a single all-encompassing chemical model.

Energy Performance Assessment of a Solar-driven Thermochemical Cycle Device for Green Hydrogen Production

This paper presents a novel dynamic simulation model for assessing the energy performance of solar-driven systems employed in green hydrogen production. The system consists of a parabolic dish collector that focuses solar radiation on two cerium-based thermochemical reactors. The model is based on a transient finitedifference method to simulate the thermal behaviour of the system and it integrates a theoretical analysis of materials and operating principles. Different empirical data were considered for experimentally validating it: a good agreement between experimental and simulated results was obtained for the temperatures calculated inside the thermochemical reactor (R2 = 0.99 MAPE = 6.3%) and the hourly flow rates of hydrogen oxygen and carbon monoxide (R2 = 0.96 MAPE = 10%) inside the thermochemical reactor. The model was implemented in a MatLab tool for the system dynamic analysis under different boundary conditions. Subsequently to explore the capability of this approach the developed tool was used for analysing the examined device operating in twelve different weather zones. The obtained results comprise heat maps of specific crucial instants and hourly dynamic trends showing redox reaction cycles occurring into the thermochemical reactors. The yearly hydrogen production ranges from 1.19 m3 /y to 1.64 m3 /y according to the hourly incident solar radiations outdoor air temperatures and wind speeds. New graphic tools for rapid feasibility studies are presented. The developed tools and the obtained results can be useful to the basic design of this technology and for the multi-objective optimization of its layout and main design/operating parameters.
Review on Ammonia as a Potential Fuel: From Synthesis to Economics

Ammonia a molecule that is gaining more interest as a fueling vector has been considered as a candidate to power transport produce energy and support heating applications for decades. However the particular characteristics of the molecule always made it a chemical with low if any benefit once compared to conventional fossil fuels. Still the current need to decarbonize our economy makes the search of new methods crucial to use chemicals such as ammonia that can be produced and employed without incurring in the emission of carbon oxides. Therefore current efforts in this field are leading scientists industries and governments to seriously invest efforts in the development of holistic solutions capable of making ammonia a viable fuel for the transition toward a clean future. On that basis this review has approached the subject gathering inputs from scientists actively working on the topic. The review starts from the importance of ammonia as an energy vector moving through all of the steps in the production distribution utilization safety legal considerations and economic aspects of the use of such a molecule to support the future energy mix. Fundamentals of combustion and practical cases for the recovery of energy of ammonia are also addressed thus providing a complete view of what potentially could become a vector of crucial importance to the mitigation of carbon emissions. Different from other works this review seeks to provide a holistic perspective of ammonia as a chemical that presents benefits and constraints for storing energy from sustainable sources. State-of-the-art knowledge provided by academics actively engaged with the topic at various fronts also enables a clear vision of the progress in each of the branches of ammonia as an energy carrier. Further the fundamental boundaries of the use of the molecule are expanded to real technical issues for all potential technologies capable of using it for energy purposes legal barriers that will be faced to achieve its deployment safety and environmental considerations that impose a critical aspect for acceptance and wellbeing and economic implications for the use of ammonia across all aspects approached for the production and implementation of this chemical as a fueling source. Herein this work sets the principles research practicalities and future views of a transition toward a future where ammonia will be a major energy player.
Analysis of the Combustion Process in a Hydrogen-Fueled CFR Engine

Green hydrogen produced using renewable energy is nowadays one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels for reducing pollutant emissions and in turn global warming. In particular the use of hydrogen as fuel for internal combustion engines has been widely analyzed over the past few years. In this paper the authors show the results of some experimental tests performed on a hydrogen-fueled CFR (Cooperative Fuel Research) engine with particular reference to the combustion. Both the air/fuel (A/F) ratio and the engine compression ratio (CR) were varied in order to evaluate the influence of the two parameters on the combustion process. The combustion duration was divided in two parts: the flame front development (characterized by laminar flame speed) and the rapid combustion phase (characterized by turbulent flame speed). The results of the hydrogen-fueled engine have been compared with results obtained with gasoline in a reference operating condition. The increase in engine CR reduces the combustion duration whereas the opposite effect is observed with an increase in the A/F ratio. It is interesting to observe how the two parameters CR and A/F ratio have a different influence on the laminar and turbulent combustion phases. The influence of both A/F ratio and engine CR on heat transfer to the combustion chamber wall was also evaluated and compared with the gasoline operation. The heat transfer resulting from hydrogen combustion was found to be higher than the heat transfer resulting from gasoline combustion and this is probably due to the different quenching distance of the two fuels.
Renewable Hydrogen Production Processes for the Off-Gas Valorization in Integrated Steelworks through Hydrogen Intensified Methane and Methanol Syntheses

Within integrated steelmaking industries significant research efforts are devoted to the efficient use of resources and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Integrated steelworks consume a considerable quantity of raw materials and produce a high amount of by-products such as off-gases currently used for the internal production of heat steam or electricity. These off-gases can be further valorized as feedstock for methane and methanol syntheses but their hydrogen content is often inadequate to reach high conversions in synthesis processes. The addition of hydrogen is fundamental and a suitable hydrogen production process must be selected to obtain advantages in process economy and sustainability. This paper presents a comparative analysis of different hydrogen production processes from renewable energy namely polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis solid oxide electrolyze cell electrolysis and biomass gasification. Aspen Plus® V11-based models were developed and simulations were conducted for sensitivity analyses to acquire useful information related to the process behavior. Advantages and disadvantages for each considered process were highlighted. In addition the integration of the analyzed hydrogen production methods with methane and methanol syntheses is analyzed through further Aspen Plus®-based simulations. The pros and cons of the different hydrogen production options coupled with methane and methanol syntheses included in steelmaking industries are analyzed
Hydrogen Role in the Valorization of Integrated Steelworks Process Off-gases through Methane and Methanol Syntheses

The valorization of integrated steelworks process off-gases as feedstock for synthesizing methane and methanol is in line with European Green Deal challenges. However this target can be generally achieved only through process off-gases enrichment with hydrogen and use of cutting-edge syntheses reactors coupled to advanced control systems. These aspects are addressed in the RFCS project i3 upgrade and the central role of hydrogen was evident from the first stages of the project. First stationary scenario analyses showed that the required hydrogen amount is significant and existing renewable hydrogen production technologies are not ready to satisfy the demand in an economic perspective. The poor availability of low-cost green hydrogen as one of the main barriers for producing methane and methanol from process off-gases is further highlighted in the application of an ad-hoc developed dispatch controller for managing hydrogen intensified syntheses in integrated steelworks. The dispatch controller considers both economic and environmental impacts in the cost function and although significant environmental benefits are obtainable by exploiting process off-gases in the syntheses the current hydrogen costs highly affect the dispatch controller decisions. This underlines the need for big scale green hydrogen production processes and dedicated green markets for hydrogen-intensive industries which would ensure easy access to this fundamental gas paving the way for a C-lean and more sustainable steel production.
Assessing Sizing Optimality of OFF-GRID AC-Linked Solar PV-PEM Systems for Hydrogen Production

Herein a novel methodology to perform optimal sizing of AC-linked solar PV-PEM systems is proposed. The novelty of this work is the proposition of the solar plant to electrolyzer capacity ratio (AC/AC ratio) as optimization variable. The impact of this AC/AC ratio on the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) and the deviation of the solar DC/AC ratio when optimized specifically for hydrogen production are quantified. Case studies covering a Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI) range of 1400e2600 kWh/m2 -year are assessed. The obtained LCOHs range between 5.9 and 11.3 USD/kgH2 depending on sizing and location. The AC/AC ratio is found to strongly affect cost production and LCOH optimality while the optimal solar DC/AC ratio varies up to 54% when optimized to minimize the cost of hydrogen instead of the cost of energy only. Larger oversizing is required for low GHI locations; however H2 production is more sensitive to sizing ratios for high GHI locations.
Energy Sustainability Analysis (ESA) of Energy-Producing Processes: A Case Study on Distributed H2 Production

In the sustainability context the performance of energy-producing technologies using different energy sources needs to be scored and compared. The selective criterion of a higher level of useful energy to feed an ever-increasing demand of energy to satisfy a wide range of endo- and exosomatic human needs seems adequate. In fact surplus energy is able to cover energy services only after compensating for the energy expenses incurred to build and to run the technology itself. This paper proposes an energy sustainability analysis (ESA) methodology based on the internal and external energy use of a given technology considering the entire energy trajectory from energy sources to useful energy. ESA analysis is conducted at two levels: (i) short-term by the use of the energy sustainability index (ESI) which is the first step to establish whether the energy produced is able to cover the direct energy expenses needed to run the technology and (ii) long-term by which all the indirect energy-quotas are considered i.e. all the additional energy requirements of the technology including the energy amortization quota necessary for the replacement of the technology at the end of its operative life. The long-term level of analysis is conducted by the evaluation of two indicators: the energy return per unit of energy invested (EROI) over the operative life and the energy payback-time (EPT) as the minimum lapse at which all energy expenditures for the production of materials and their construction can be repaid to society. The ESA methodology has been applied to the case study of H2 production at small-scale (10–15 kWH2) comparing three different technologies: (i) steam-methane reforming (SMR) (ii) solar-powered water electrolysis (SPWE) and (iii) two-stage anaerobic digestion (TSAD) in order to score the technologies from an energy sustainability perspective.
Economic Assessment of Hydrogen Production in a Renewable Energy Community in Italy

Renewable Energy Community (REC) is a new paradigm in European Union to produce transform share and sell renewables at a local consumer level also via e-fuel (i.e. hydrogen). This work investigates the economic feasibility of a hydrogen Power-to-Gas (PtG) system realized inside a REC using only excess renewable electricity not consumed by REC itself. A single centralized photovoltaic (PV) plant is directly connected to an electrolyser; a hydrogen compressor and two hydrogen storages at low and high pressure complete the PtG system. A scenario of a REC composed by 450 residential electric users (around 1000 people) has been analysed coupled with described PtG considering eight different sizes of PV plant. In the study Italian subsidies to REC shared energy are evaluated as incentives to hydrogen production. An optimal size of PtG components for each PV size is investigated at the limit of economical sustainability evaluating net present value (NPV) positive and near zero. Results show that for the considered REC it is possible to produce and sell up to around 3 tons per year of green hydrogen at most to the same lowest selling price declared currently in the Italian market (5 €/kg).
Gas Turbine Combustion Technologies for Hydrogen Blends

The article reviews gas turbine combustion technologies focusing on their current ability to operate with hydrogen enriched natural gas up to 100% H2. The aim is to provide a picture of the most promising fuel-flexible and clean combustion technologies the object of current research and development. The use of hydrogen in the gas turbine power generation sector is initially motivated highlighting both its decarbonisation and electric grid stability objectives; moreover the state-of-the-art of hydrogen-blend gas turbines and their 2024 and 2030 targets are reported in terms of some key performance indicators. Then the changes in combustion characteristics due to the hydrogen enrichment of natural gas blends are briefly described from their enhanced reactivity to their pollutant emissions. Finally gas turbine combustion strategies both already commercially available (mostly based on aerodynamic flame stabilisation self-ignition and staging) or still under development (like the micro-mixing and the exhaust gas recirculation concepts) are described.
Dynamic Simulation and Thermoeconomic Analysis of a Power to Gas System

Power to gas technology is an innovative solution to promote the use of renewable energy technologies also including e-fuels. This work presents a techno-economic analysis of a novel concept of a renewable power to gas plant. A 2.4 MW solid oxide electrolyzer fed by a 3.1 MW photovoltaic field is coupled with a biomethane production unit to produce synthetic methane by means of a 2.4 MW methanation unit. The hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer is used for the methanation reaction aiming at producing natural gas at net zero carbon emissions. The CO2 is obtained as a byproduct of the membrane separation in a biogas upgrading unit. The methanation unit and the electrolyzer models are developed in MatLab and integrated in TRNSYS to perform a dynamic simulation of all the components and the system as a whole. Dynamic simulation results show a 42% increase in the production of natural gas from renewable energy sources. The thermoeconomic analysis shows a remarkable primary energy saving index of 176% and a total amount of 896 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions saved. As expected the critical point is the economic feasibility since the simple payback is 9 years in case local incentives and subsidies are considered. The parametric analysis on the photovoltaic capacity shows that the simple payback dramatically depends on such design parameter varying from 6 years in the best case scenario to 92 years in the worst case scenario.
Preliminary Design and Simulation of a Thermal Management System with Integrated Secondary Power Generation Capability for a Mach 8 Aircraft Concept Exploiting Liquid Hydrogen

This paper introduces the concept of a thermal management system (TMS) with integrated on-board power generation capabilities for a Mach 8 hypersonic aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen (LH2). This work developed within the EU-funded STRATOFLY Project aims to demonstrate an opportunity for facing the challenges of hypersonic flight for civil applications mainly dealing with thermal and environmental control as well as propellant distribution and on-board power generation adopting a highly integrated plant characterized by a multi-functional architecture. The TMS concept described in this paper makes benefit of the connection between the propellant storage and distribution subsystems of the aircraft to exploit hydrogen vapors and liquid flow as the means to drive a thermodynamic cycle able on one hand to ensure engine feed and thermal control of the cabin environment while providing on the other hand the necessary power for other on-board systems and utilities especially during the operation of high-speed propulsion plants which cannot host traditional generators. The system layout inspired by concepts studied within precursor EU-funded projects is detailed and modified in order to suggest an operable solution that can be installed on-board the reference aircraft with focus on those interfaces impacting its performance requirements and integration features as part of the overall systems architecture of the plane. Analysis and modeling of the system is performed and the main results in terms of performance along the reference mission profile are discussed.
