The Study on Permissible Value of Hydrogen Gas Concentration in Purge Gas of Fuel Cell Vehicles

Ignition conditions and risks of ignition on a permissible value of hydrogen concentration in purge gas prescribed by HFCV-GTR were reevaluated. Experiments were conducted to investigate burning behavior and thermal influence of continuous evacuation of hydrogen under continuous purge of air / hydrogen premixed gas which is close to an actual purge condition of FCV and thermal evacuation of hydrogen. As a result of the re-evaluation it was shown from the viewpoint of safety that the permissible value of hydrogen concentration in purge gas prescribed by the current HFCV GTR is appropriate.
Impact of Mechanical Ventilation on Build-up and Concentration Distribution Inside a 1-m3 Enclosure Considering Hydrogen Energy

Natural ventilation is an efficient and well-known way to mitigate a hydrogen build-up in the case of an accidental release in confined enclosures. However for some hydrogen energy applications natural ventilation is not possible or is not efficient enough to reach defined safety strategy. Thus mechanical or forced ventilation can be interesting means to avoid critical concentration of hydrogen considering degraded operation and associated potential hazardous events. To better understand the impact of mechanical ventilation on the hydrogen build-up and distribution a dedicated study was led. First accidental release scenarios were experimentally simulated with helium in a 1-m3 enclosure. Several configurations of release and ventilation modes were tested and are presented in this study. Secondly analytical and numerical – Computational Fluid Dynamics – calculation approaches were applied and adjusted to propose a simplified methodology taking into account mechanical ventilation for assessment of hydrogen accumulation and for design optimization of the applications.
Compliance Measurements of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Exhaust

The NREL Sensor Laboratory has been developing an analyzer that can verify compliance to the international United Nations Global Technical Regulation number 13 (GTR 13--Global Technical Regulation on Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Vehicles) prescriptive requirements pertaining to allowable hydrogen levels in the exhaust of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) [1]. GTR 13 prescribes that the FCEV exhaust shall remain below 4 vol% H2 over a 3-second moving average and shall not at any time exceed 8 vol% H2 as verified with an analyzer with a response time (t90) of 300 ms or faster. GTR 13 has been implemented and is to serve as the basis for national regulations pertaining to hydrogen powered vehicle safety in the United States Canada Japan and the European Union. In the U.S. vehicle safety is overseen by the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and in Canada by Transport Canada through the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS). The NREL FCEV exhaust analyzer is based upon a low-cost commercial hydrogen sensor with a response time (t90) of less than 250 ms. A prototype analyzer and gas probe assembly have been constructed and tested that can interface to the gas sampling system used by Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) Emission Research and Measurement Section (ERMS) for the exhaust gas analysis. Through a partnership with Transport Canada ECCC will analyze the hydrogen level in the exhaust of a commercial FCEV. ECCC will use the NREL FCEV Exhaust Gas analyzer to perform these measurements. The analyzer was demonstrated on a FCEV operating under simulated road conditions using a chassis dynamometer at a private facility.
Experimental Study of Light Gas Dispersion in a Channel

Usage of hydrogen as fuel gives rise to possible accidental risks due to leakage and dispersion. A risk from hydrogen leak is the formation of a large volume of the hydrogen-air mixture which could be ignited and leading up to a severe explosion. Prevention and control of formation and ignition of combustible hydrogen cloud necessitate sufficient knowledge of mechanisms of the hydrogen leak dispersion ignition and over-pressures generated during combustion. This paper aims to investigate the momentum-controlled jet the buoyancy-controlled wave and the parameters influencing hydrogen concentration distribution in an elongated space. It demonstrates experimental results and analysis from helium and hydrogen dispersion in a channel. A set of experiments were carried out for the release of helium and hydrogen jets in a 3 m long channel to record their concentrations in the cloud by concentration sensors at different horizontal and vertical positions. Flow visualization technique was applied using shadowgraph to image the mixing process next to the release point and the helium- hydrogen-air cloud shape at the middle of the channel. Moreover results were used for comparison of helium and hydrogen concentration gradients. The results of the experiments show that swift mixing occurs at higher flow rates smaller nozzle sizes and downward release direction. Higher concentration recorded in the channel with negative inclination. Results also confirmed that hydrogen/helium behavior pattern in the channel accords with mutual intrusion theory about gravity currents.
The Influence of H2 Safety Research on Relevant Risk Assessment

Hydrogen is a valuable option of clean fuel to keep the global temperature rise below 2°C. However one of the main barriers in its transport and use is to ensure safety levels that are comparable with traditional fuels. In particular liquid hydrogen accidents may not be fully understood (yet) and excluded by relevant risk assessment. For instance as hydrogen is cryogenically liquefied to increase its energy density during transport Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions (BLEVE) is a potential and critical event that is important addressing in the hazard identification phase. Two past BLEVE accidents involving liquid hydrogen support such thesis. For this reason results from consequence analysis of hydrogen BLEVE will not only improve the understanding of the related physical phenomenon but also influence future risk assessment studies. This study aims to show the extent of consequence analysis influence on overall quantitative risk assessment of hydrogen technologies and propose a systematic approach for integration of overall results. The Dynamic Procedure for Atypical Scenario Identification (DyPASI) is used for this purpose. The work specifically focuses on consequence models that are originally developed for other substances and adapted for liquid hydrogen. Particular attention is given to the parameters affecting the magnitude of the accident as currently investigated by a number of research projects on hydrogen safety worldwide. A representative example of consequence analysis for liquid hydrogen release is employed in this study. Critical conditions detected by the numerical simulation models are accurately identified and considered for subsequent update of the overall system risk assessment.
Impact Assessments on People and Buildings for Hydrogen Pipeline Explosions

Hydrogen has the potential to act as the energy carrier of the future. It will be then produced in large amounts and will certainly need to be transported for long distances. The safest way to transport hydrogen is through pipelines. Failure of pipelines carrying gaseous hydrogen can have several effects some of which can pose a significant threat of damage to people and buildings in the immediate proximity of the failure location. This paper presents a probabilistic risk assessment procedure for the estimation of damage to people and buildings endangered by high-pressure hydrogen pipeline explosions. The procedure provides evaluation of annual probability of damage to people and buildings under an extreme event as a combination of the conditional probability of damage triggered by an explosion and the probability of occurrence of the explosion as a consequence of the pipeline failure. Physical features such as the gas jet release process flammable cloud size blast generation and explosion effects on people and buildings are considered and evaluated through the SLAB integral model TNO model Probit equations and Pressure-Impulse diagrams. For people both direct and indirect effects of overpressure events are considered. For buildings a comparison of the damage to different types of buildings (i.e. reinforced concrete buildings and tuff stone masonry buildings) is made. The probabilistic procedure presented may be used for designing a new hydrogen pipeline network and will be an advantageous tool for safety management of hydrogen gas pipelines.
Hydrogen Explosion Hazards Limitation in Battery Rooms with Different Ventilation Systems

When charging most types of industrial lead-acid batteries hydrogen gas is emitted. A large number of batteries especially in relatively small areas/enclosures and in the absence of an adequate ventilation system may create an explosion hazard. This paper describes full scale tests in confined space which demonstrate conditions that can occur in a battery room in the event of a ventilation system breakdown. Over the course of the tests full scale hydrogen emission experiments were performed to study emission time and flammable cloud formation according to the assumed emission velocity. On this basis the characteristics of dispersion of hydrogen in the battery room were obtained. The CFD model Fire Dynamic Simulator (NIST) was used for confirmation that the lack of ventilation in a battery room can be the cause of an explosive atmosphere developing and leading to a potential huge explosive hazard. It was demonstrated that different ventilation systems provide battery rooms with varying efficiencies of hydrogen removal. The most effective type appeared to be natural ventilation which proved more effective than mechanical means.
Numerical Prediction of Cryogenic Hydrogen Vertical Jets

Comparison of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) predictions with measurements is presented for cryo-compressed hydrogen vertical jets. The stagnation conditions of the experiments are characteristic of unintended leaks from pipe systems that connect cryogenic hydrogen storage tanks and could be encountered at a fuel cell refuelling station. Jets with pressure up to 5 bar and temperatures just above the saturation liquid temperature were examined. Comparisons are made to the centerline mass fraction and temperature decay rates the radial profiles of mass fraction and the contours of volume fraction. Two notional nozzle approaches are tested to model the under-expanded jet that was formed in the tests with pressures above 2 bar. In both approaches the mass and momentum balance from the throat to the notional nozzle are solved while the temperature at the notional nozzle was assumed equal to the nozzle temperature in the first approach and was calculated by an energy balance in the second approach. The two approaches gave identical results. Satisfactory agreement with the measurements was found in terms of centerline mass fraction and temperature. However for test with 3 and 4 bar release the concentration was overpredicted. Furthermore a wider radial spread was observed in the predictions possibly revealing higher degree of diffusion using the k-ε turbulence model. An integral model for cryogenic jets was also developed and provided good results. Finally a test simulation was performed with an ambient temperature jet and compared to the cold jet showing that warm jets decay faster than cold jets.
An Investigation of Mobile Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Applications

Safe practices in the production storage distribution and use of hydrogen are essential for the widespread acceptance of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. A significant safety incident in any project could damage public perception of hydrogen and fuel cells. A recent incident involving a hydrogen mobile storage trailer in the United States has brought attention to the potential impacts of mobile hydrogen storage and transport. Road transport of bulk hydrogen presents unique hazards that can be very different from those for stationary equipment and new equipment developers may have less experience and expertise than seasoned gas providers. In response to the aforementioned incident and in support of hydrogen and fuel cell activities in California the Hydrogen Safety Panel (HSP) has investigated the safety of mobile hydrogen and fuel cell applications (mobile auxiliary/emergency fuel cell power units mobile fuellers multi-cylinder trailer transport unmanned aircraft power supplies and mobile hydrogen generators). The HSP examined the applications requirements and performance of mobile applications that are being used extensively outside of California to understand how safety considerations are applied. This paper discusses the results of the HSP’s evaluation of hydrogen and fuel cell mobile applications along with recommendations to address relevant safety issues.
Choked Two-phase Flow with Account of Discharge Line Effects

An engineering tool is presented to predict steady state two-phase choked flow through a discharge line with variable cross section with account of friction and without wall heat transfer. The tool is able to predict the distribution of all relevant physical quantities along the discharge line. Choked flow is calculated using the possible-impossible flow algorithm implemented in a way to account for possible density discontinuities along the line. Physical properties are calculated using the Helmholtz Free Energy formulation. The tool is verified against previous experiments with water and evaluated against previous experiments with cryogenic two-phase hydrogen.

Magneto-Electronic Hydrogen Gas Sensors: A Critical Review

Devices enabling early detection of low concentrations of leaking hydrogen and precision measurements in a wide range of hydrogen concentrations in hydrogen storage systems are essential for the mass-production of fuel-cell vehicles and more broadly for the transition to the hydrogen economy. Whereas several competing sensor technologies are potentially suitable for this role ultralow fire-hazard contactless and technically simple magneto-electronic sensors stand apart because they have been able to detect the presence of hydrogen gas in a range of hydrogen concentrations from 0.06% to 100% at atmospheric pressure with the response time approaching the industry gold standard of one second. This new kind of hydrogen sensors is the subject of this review article where we inform academic physics chemistry material science and engineering communities as well as industry researchers about the recent developments in the field of magneto-electronic hydrogen sensors including those based on magneto-optical Kerr effect anomalous Hall effect and Ferromagnetic Resonance with a special focus on Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR)-based devices. In particular we present the physical foundations of magneto-electronic hydrogen sensors and we critically overview their advantages and disadvantages for applications in the vital areas of the safety of hydrogen-powered cars and hydrogen fuelling stations as well as hydrogen concentration meters including those operating directly inside hydrogen-fuelled fuel cells. We believe that this review will be of interest to a broad readership also facilitating the translation of research results into policy and practice.
Monitoring H2 Bubbles by Real Time H2 Sensor

Portable H2 sensor was made by using mass spectrometer for the outside monitoring experiment: the leak test the replacement test of gas pipe line the combustion test the explosion experiment the H2 diffusion experiment and the recent issue of the exhaust gas of Fuel Cell Vehicle. In order to check the real time concentration of H2 in various conditions even in the highly humid condition the system volume of the sampling route was minimized with attaching the humidifier. Also to calibrate H2 concentration automatically the specific concentration H2 small cylinder was mounted in the system. In the experiment when H2 gas was introduced in the N2 flow or air in the tube or the high-pressure bottle highly concentrated H2 phases were observed by this sensor without diffusion. This H2 sensor can provide the real time information of the hydrogen molecules and the clouds. The basic characterization of this sensor showed 0-100% H2 concentrations within 2ms. Our observation showed the size of the high concentration phase of H2 and the low concentration phase after mixing process. The mixed and unmixed H2 unintended concentration of cloud gas the high speed small cluster of hydrogen molecules in purged gas were explored by this real time monitoring system.

In 2005 the Japanese High-pressure Gas Safety Act the Fire Service Act and the Building Standards Act were revised to establish the requirements for 35 MPa hydrogen stations. And in 2012-2014 revisions were made to the High-pressure Gas Safety Act and the Fire Service Act to provide the regulatory requirements for 70 MPa hydrogen stations. We conducted a study on materials that may contribute to prepare technical standards concerning the major 4 items 12 additional items and 13 new items which may affect the costs from the point of view of promoting the hydrogen infrastructure.
Hazid for CO2-free Hydrogen Supply Chain Feed (Front End Engineering Design)

We at Kawasaki have proposed a “CO2 free H2 chain” using the abundant brown coal of Australia as a hydrogen source. We developed the basic design package and finished the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) in 2014. There are not only the hazards of the processing plant system but also the characteristic hazards of a hydrogen plant system. We considered and carried out Hazard Identification (HAZID) as the most appropriate approach for safety design in this stage. This paper describes the safety design and HAZID which we practiced for the CO2-Free Hydrogen Supply Chain FEED.
Multistage Risk Analysis and Safety Study of a Hydrogen Energy Station

China has plenty of renewable energy like wind power and solar energy especially in the northwest part of the country. Due to the volatile and intermittent characters of the green powers high penetration level of renewable resources could arise grid stabilization problem. Therefore electricity storage is considered as a solution and hydrogen energy storage is proposed. Instead of storing the electricity directly it converts electricity into hydrogen and the energy in hydrogen will be released as needed from gas to electricity and heat. The transformed green power can be fed to the power grid and heat supply network. State Grid Corporation of China carried out its first hydrogen demonstration project. In the demonstration project an alkaline electrolyzer and a PEM hydrogen fuel cell stack are decided as the hydrogen producer and consumer respectively. Hydrogen safety issue is always of significant importance to secure the property. In order to develop a dedicated safety analysis method for hydrogen energy storage system in power industry the risk analysis for the power-to-gas-topower&heat facility was made. The hazard and operability (HAZOP) study and the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) are performed sequentially to the installation to identify the most problematic parts of the system in view of hydrogen safety and possible failure modes and consequences. At the third step the typical hydrogen leak accident scenarios are simulated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) computer code. The resulted pressure loads of the possibly ignited hydrogen-air mixture in the facility container are estimated conservatively. Important safeguards and mitigation measures are proposed based on the three-stage risk and safety studies.
Freeze of Nozzle & Receptacle During Hydrogen Fueling

We conducted a fuelling test with hydrogen gas for a safety evaluation of the nozzle/receptacle at a controlled temperature and humidity. Test results confirmed that the nozzle/receptacle froze under specific conditions. However freezing did not cause apparatus damage nor hydrogen leakage. The nozzle/receptacle is thus able to fuel safely even if the nozzle/receptacle is stuck due to ice. In addition we quantified the water volume that causes freezing.
Full Scale Experimental Campaign to Determine the Actual Heat Flux Produced by Fire on Composite Storages - Calibration Tests on Metallic Vessels

If Hydrogen is expected to be highly valuable some improvements should be conducted mainly regarding the storage safety. To prevent from high pressure hydrogen composite tanks bursting the comprehension of the thermo-mechanics phenomena in the case of fire should be improved. To understand the kinetic of strength loss the heat flux produced by fire of various intensities should be assessed. This is the objective of this real scale experimental campaign which will allow studying in future works the strength loss of composite high-pressure vessels in similar fire conditions to the ones determined in this study. Fire calibration tests were performed on metallic cylinder vessels. These tests with metallic cylinders are critical in the characterization of the thermal load of various fire sources (pool fire propane gas fire hydrogen gas fire) so as to evaluate differences related to different thermal load. Radiant panels were also used as thermal source for reference of pure radiation heat transfer. The retained thermal load might be representative of accidental situations in worst case scenarios and relevant for a standardized testing protocol. The tests performed show that hydrogen gas fires and heptane pool fire allow reaching the target in terms of absorbed energy regarding the results of risk analysis performed previously. Other considerations can be taken into account that will led to retain an hydrogen gas fire for further works. Firstly hydrogen gas fire is the more realistic scenario: Hydrogen is the combustible that we every time find near an hydrogen storage. Secondly as one of the objectives of the project is to make recommendations for standardization issues it’s important to note that gas fires are not too complex to calibrate control and reproduce. Finally due to previous considerations Hydrogen gas fire will be retained for thermal load of composite cylinders in future works.
Quantitative Risk Assessment Methodology for Hydrogen Tank Rupture in a Tunnel Fire

This study presents a methodology of a quantitative risk assessment for the scenario of an onboard hydrogen storage tank rupture and tunnel fire incident. The application of the methodology is demonstrated on a road tunnel. The consequence analysis is carried out for the rupture of a 70 MPa 62.4-litre hydrogen storage tank in a fire that has a thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) failed or blocked during an incident. Scenarios with two states of charge (SoC) of the tank i.e. SoC = 99% and SoC = 59% are investigated. The risks in terms of fatalities per vehicle per year and the cost per incident are assessed. It is found that for the reduction in the risk with the hydrogen-powered vehicle in a road tunnel fire incident to the acceptable level of 10−5 fatality/vehicle/year the fireresistance rating (FRR) of the hydrogen storage tank should exceed 84 min. The FRR increase to this level reduces the societal risk to an acceptable level. The increase in the FRR to 91 min reduces the risk in terms of the cost of the incident to GBP 300 following the threshold cost of minor injury published by the UK Health and Safety Executive. The Frequency–Number (F–N) of the fatalities curve is developed to demonstrate the effect of mitigation measures on the risk reduction to socially acceptable levels. The performed sensitivity study confirms that with the broad range of input parameters including the fire brigade response time the risk of rupture of standard hydrogen tank-TPRD systems inside the road tunnel is unacceptable. One of the solutions enabling an inherently safer use of hydrogen-powered vehicles in tunnels is the implementation of breakthrough safety technology—the explosion free in a fire self-venting (TPRD-less) tanks.
Investigation on Cooling Effect of Water Sprays on Tunnel Fires of Hydrogen

As one of the most promising renewable green energies hydrogen power is a popularly accepted option to drive automobiles. Commercial application of fuel cell vehicles has been started since 2015. More and more hydrogen safety concerns have been considered for years. Tunnels are an important part of traffic infrastructure with a mostly confined feature. Hydrogen leak followed possibly by a hydrogen fire is a potential accident scenario which can be triggered trivially by a car accident while hydrogen powered vehicles operate in a tunnel. Water spray is recommended traditionally as a mitigation measure against tunnel fires. The interaction between water spray and hydrogen fire is studied in a way of numerical simulations. By using the computer program of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) tunnel fires of released hydrogen in different scales are simulated coupled with water droplet injections featured in different droplet sizes or varying mass flow rates. The cooling effect of spray on hot gases of hydrogen fires is apparently observed in the simulations. However in some circumstance the turbulence intensified by the water injection can prompt hydrogen combustion which is a negative side-effect of the spray.
The NREL Sensor Laboratory: Status and Future Directions for Hydrogen Detection

The NREL Hydrogen Sensor Laboratory was commissioned in 2010 as a resource for the national and international hydrogen community to ensure the availability and proper use of hydrogen sensors. Since then the Sensor Laboratory has provided unbiased verification of hydrogen sensor performance for sensor developers end-users and regulatory agencies and has also provided active support for numerous code and standards development organizations. Although sensor performance assessment remains a core capability the mission of the NREL Sensor Laboratory has expanded toward a more holistic approach regarding the role of hydrogen detection and its implementation strategy for both assurance of facility safety and for process control applications. Active monitoring for detection of unintended releases has been identified as a viable approach for improving facility safety and lowering setbacks. The current research program for the Sensor Laboratory addresses both conventional and advanced developing detection strategies in response to the emerging large-scale hydrogen markets such as those envisioned by H2@Scale. These emerging hydrogen applications may require alternative detection strategies that supplement and may ultimately supplant the use of traditional sensors for monitoring hydrogen releases. Research focus areas for the NREL Sensor Laboratory now encompass the characterization of released hydrogen behavior to optimize detection strategies for both indoor and outdoor applications assess advanced methods of hydrogen leak detection such as hydrogen wide area monitoring for large scale applications implement active monitoring as a risk reduction strategy to improve safety at hydrogen facilities and to provide continuing support of hydrogen safety codes and standards. In addition to assurance of safety detection will be critical for process control applications such as hydrogen fuel quality verification for fuel cell vehicle applications and for monitoring and controlling of hydrogen-natural gas blend composition.
Development of Risk Mitigation Guidance for Hydrogen Sensor Placement Indoors and Outdoors

Guidance on Sensor Placement remains one of the top priorities for the safe deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell equipment in the commercial marketplace. Building on the success of Phase l work reported at TCHS20l9 and published in TJHE this paper discusses the consecutive steps to further develop and validate such guidance for mechanically ventilated enclosures. The key step included a more in-depth analysis of sensitivity to variation of physical parameters in a small enclosure. and finally expansion of the developed approach to confined spaces in an outdoor environment.
Shock Tube Experiments on Flame Propagation Regimes and Critical Conditions for Flame Acceleration and Detonation Transition for Hydrogen-air Mixtures at Cryogenic Temperatures

A series of more than 100 experiments with hydrogen-air mixtures at cryogenic temperatures have been performed in a shock tube in the frame of the PRESLHY project. A wide range of hydrogen concentrations from 8 to 60%H2 in the shock tube of the length of 5 m and 50 mm id was tested at cryogenic temperatures from 80 to 130K at ambient pressure. Flame propagation regimes were investigated for all hydrogen compositions in the shock tube at three different blockage ratios (BR) 0 0.3 and 0.6 as a function of initial temperature. Pressure sensors and InGaAs-photodiodes have been applied to monitor the flame and shock propagation velocity of the process. The experiments at ambient pressure and temperature were conducted as the reference data for cryogenic experiments. A critical expansion ratio for an effective flame acceleration to the speed of sound was experimentally found at cryogenic temperatures. The detonability criterion for smooth and obstructed channels was used to evaluate the detonation cell sizes at cryogenic temperatures as well. The main peculiarities of cryogenic combustion with respect to the safety assessment were that the maximum combustion pressure was several times higher compared to ambient temperature and the run-up-distance to detonation was several times shorter independent of lower chemical reactivity at cryogenic conditions.
An Analysis on the Compressed Hydrogen Storage System for the Fast-Filling Process of Hydrogen Gas at the Pressure of 82 MPa

During the fast-filling of a high-pressure hydrogen tank the temperature of hydrogen would rise significantly and may lead to failure of the tank. In addition the temperature rise also reduces hydrogen density in the tank which causes mass decrement into the tank. Therefore it is of practical significance to study the temperature rise and the amount of charging of hydrogen for hydrogen safety. In this paper the change of hydrogen temperature in the tank according to the pressure rise during the process of charging the high-pressure tank in the process of a 82-MPa hydrogen filling system the final temperature the amount of filling of hydrogen gas and the change of pressure of hydrogen through the pressure reducing valve and the performance of heat exchanger for cooling high-temperature hydrogen were analyzed by theoretical and numerical methods. When high-pressure filling began in the initial vacuum state the condition was called the “First cycle”. When the high-pressure charging process began in the remaining condition the process was called the “Second cycle”. As a result of the theoretical analysis the final temperatures of hydrogen gas were calculated to be 436.09 K for the first cycle of the high-pressure tank and 403.55 for the second cycle analysis. The internal temperature of the buffer tank increased by 345.69 K and 32.54 K in the first cycle and second cycles after high-pressure filling. In addition the final masses were calculated to be 11.58 kg and 12.26 kg for the first cycle and second cycle of the high-pressure tank respectively. The works of the paper can provide suggestions for the temperature rise of 82 MPa compressed hydrogen storage system and offer necessary theory and numerical methods for guiding safe operation and construction of a hydrogen filling system.
Effect of Mechanical Ventilation on Accidental Hydrogen Releases - Large Scale Experiments

This paper presents a series of experiments on the effectiveness of existing mechanical ventilation systems during accidental hydrogen releases in confined spaces like underground garages. The purpose was to find the mass flow rate limit hence the TPRD diameter limit that will not require a change in the ventilation system. The experiments were performed in a 40 ft ISO container in Norway and hydrogen gas was used in all experiments. The forced ventilation system was installed with a standard outlet 315 mm diameter. The ventilation parameters during the investigation were British Standard with 10 ACH and British Standard with 6 ACH. The hydrogen releases were obtained through 0.5 mm and 1 mm nozzle from different hydrogen reservoir pressures. Both types of mass flow: constant and blowdown were included in the experimental matrix. The analysis of hydrogen concentration of created hydrogen cloud in the container shows the influence of the forced ventilation on hydrogen releases together with TPRD diameter and reservoir pressure. The generated experimental data will be used to validate a CFD model in the next step.
Fire Spread Scenarios Involving Hydrogen Vehicles

Fire spread between vehicles provides a potential risk in parking areas with many vehicles. Several reported very large fires caused the loss of a great number of vehicles. These fires seem to be in contradiction to the European design rules for car parks assuming only a very limited number of vehicles may be on fire at the same time. The fire spread in a car park environment is dependent on many factors of both the vehicles and the structure e.g. the latter has an impact on the rate of fire spread due to reradiation of the vehicles heat release. Therefore a CFD model is established to develop a tool to assess vehicles and better understand fire scenarios in different structures. Further the model enables testing of building design to prevent and mitigate such fires scenarios involving hydrogen vehicles. In this study a real layout of a car park is modelled to investigate the effects of hydrogen emergency releases that have used different TPRD diameters. The results provide insight into the behaviour of hydrogen cars and the release pattern of the TPRD's as well as the temperature development of the concrete ceiling and concrete beams above the cars. It shows that the TPRD diameter has a little effect on the TPRD activation time of the no.1 vehicle when the amount of H2 in the tank is the same. For the surface temperature of the ceiling and beam the peak temperature for a 1mm diameter TPRD release is found highest.
Hydrogen Leakage Simulation and Risk Analysis of Hydrogen Fueling Station in China

Hydrogen is a renewable energy source with various features clean carbon-free high energy density which is being recognized internationally as a “future energy.” The US the EU Japan South Korea China and other countries or regions are gradually clarifying the development position of hydrogen. The rapid development of the hydrogen energy industry requires more hydrogenation infrastructure to meet the hydrogenation need of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Nevertheless due to the frequent occurrence of hydrogen infrastructure accidents their safety has become an obstacle to large-scale construction. This paper analyzed five sizes (diameters of 0.068 mm 0.215 mm 0.68 mm 2.15 mm and 6.8 mm) of hydrogen leakage in the hydrogen fueling station using Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) and HyRAM software. The results show that unignited leaks occur most frequently; leaks caused by flanges valves instruments compressors and filters occur more frequently; and the risk indicator of thermal radiation accident and structure collapse accident caused by over-pressure exceeds the Chinese individual acceptable risk standard and the risk indicator of a thermal radiation accident and head impact accident caused by overpressure is below the Chinese standard. On the other hand we simulated the consequences of hydrogen leak from the 45 MPa hydrogen storage vessels by the physic module of HyRAM and obtained the ranges of plume dispersion jet fire radiative heat flux and unconfined overpressure. We suggest targeted preventive measures and safety distance to provide references for hydrogen fueling stations’ safe construction and operation.
Annealing Effects on SnO2 Thin Film for H2 Gas Sensing

Hydrogen (H2 ) is attracting attention as a renewable energy source in various fields. However H2 has a potential danger that it can easily cause a backfire or explosion owing to minor external factors. Therefore H2 gas monitoring is significant particularly near the lower explosive limit. Herein tin dioxide (SnO2 ) thin films were annealed at different times. The as-obtained thin films were used as sensing materials for H2 gas. Here the performance of the SnO2 thin film sensor was studied to understand the effect of annealing and operating temperature conditions of gas sensors to further improve their performance. The gas sensing properties exhibited by the 3-h annealed SnO2 thin film showed the highest response compared to the unannealed SnO2 thin film by approximately 1.5 times. The as-deposited SnO2 thin film showed a high response and fast response time to 5% H2 gas at 300 ◦C of 257.34% and 3 s respectively.

Efficient storage of hydrogen is crucial for the success of hydrogen energy markets. Hydrogen can be stored either as a compressed gas a refrigerated liquefied gas a cryo-compressed gas or in hydrides. This paper gives an overview of compressed hydrogen storage technologies focusing on high pressure storage tanks in metal and in composite materials. It details specific issues and constraints related to the materials and structure behavior in hydrogen and conditions representative of hydrogen energy uses. This paper is an update of the 2019 version that was presented in Australia. It especially covers recent progress made regarding regulations codes and standards for the design manufacturing periodic inspection and plastic materials’ evaluation of compressed hydrogen storage.
Numerical Simulations of Suppression Effect of Water Mist on Hydrogen Deflagration in Confined Spaces

Hydrogen safety issues attract focuses increasingly as more and more hydrogen powered vehicles are going to be operated in traffic infrastructures of different kinds like tunnels. Due to the confinement feature of traffic tunnels hydrogen deflagration may pose a risk when a hydrogen leak event occurs in a tunnel e.g. failure of the hydrogen storage system caused by a car accident in a tunnel. A water injection system can be designed in tunnels as a mitigation measure to suppress the pressure and thermal loads of hydrogen combustion in accident scenarios. The COM3D is a fully verified three-dimensional finite-difference turbulent flow combustion code which models gas mixing hydrogen combustion and detonation in nuclear containment with mitigation device or other confined facilities like vacuum vessel of fusion and semi-confined hydrogen facilities in industry such as traffic tunnels hydrogen refueling station etc. Therefore by supporting of the European HyTunnel-CS project the COM3D is applied to simulate numerically the hydrogen deflagration accident in a tunnel model being suppressed by water mist injection. The suppression effect of water mist and the suppression mechanism is elaborated and discussed in the study.
Effect of State of Charge on Type IV Hydrogen Storage Tank Rupture in a Fire

The use of hydrogen storage tanks at 100% of nominal working pressure NWP is expected only after refuelling. Driving between refuellings is characterised by the state of charge SoC<100%. There is experimental evidence that Type IV tanks tested in a fire at initial pressures below one-third of its NWP depending on a fire source were leaking without rupture. This paper aims at understanding this phenomenon and the development of a predictive model. The numerical research has demonstrated that the heat transfer from fire through the composite overwrap is sufficient to melt the polymer liner. This initiates hydrogen microleaks through the composite wall before it loses the load-bearing ability when the resin degrades deep enough to cause the tank to rupture. The dependence of tank fire-resistance rating (FRR) on the SoC is presented for tanks of volume in the range 36-244 L. The tank wall thickness non-uniformity i.e. thinner composite at the dome area is identified as a serious issue for tank’s fire resistance that must be addressed by tank manufacturers and OEMs. The effect of the burst pressure ratio on FRR is investigated. It is concluded that thermal parameters of the composite wall i.e. decomposition heat and temperatures play a vital role in simulations of tank failure and thus FRR.
Experimental Study on Flame Characteristics of Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet Fire

In this work cryogenic hydrogen fires at fixed pressures and various initial temperatures were investigated experimentally. Flame length width heat fluxes and temperatures in down-stream regions were measured for the scenarios with 1.6-3 mm jet nozzle 106 to 273 K 2-5 barabs. The results show that the flame size is related to not only the jet nozzle diameter but also the release pressure and initial temperature. The correlations of normalized flame length and width are proposed with the stagnation pressure and the ratio of ambient and stagnation temperatures. Under constant pressure the flame size total radiative power and radiation fraction increase with the decrease of temperature due to lower choked flow velocity and higher density of cryogenic hydrogen. Explosive Phase Transition in LH2

This paper describes two models for analysing and simulating the physical effects of explosive phase transition of liquid hydrogen (LH2) also known as cold BLEVE. The present work is based on theoretical and experimental work for liquefied CO2. A Rankine Hugoniot analysis for evaporation waves that was previously developed for CO2 is now extended to LH2. A CFD-method for simulating two-phase flow with mass transfer between the phases is presented and compared with the Rankine Hugoniot analysis results. The Rankine Hugoniot method uses real fluid equations of state suited for LH2 while the CFD method uses linear equations of state suited for shock capturing methods. The results show that there will be a blast from a catastrophic rupture of an LH2 vessel and that the blast waves will experience a slow decay due to the large positive pressure phase.
Effect of Flow Speed on Ignition Characteristics of Hydrogen/air Mixtures

A fuel cell vehicle has a purging system for exhausting contaminated hydrogen gas. Notwithstanding the allowable hydrogen emissions levels in the purging system are regulated by the GTR a further research on the safety requirement of emissions concentrations is therefore needed for the vehicle design into a more rational system. In the present study the effects of flow speed concentration humidity on ignition characteristics of hydrogen/air mixtures were experimentally investigated. The results demonstrate that the value of Lower Flammable Limit increased with an increase in the velocity of hydrogen/air mixtures and slightly increased with a decrease in oxygen concentration.
Safe Ventilation Methods against Leaks in Hydrogen Fuel Cell Rooms in Homes

Hydrogen which has a high energy density and does not emit pollutants is considered an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. Herein we report an experimental study on hydrogen leaks and ventilation methods for preventing damage caused by leaks from hydrogen fuel cell rooms in homes among various uses of hydrogen. This experiment was conducted in a temporary space with a volume of 11.484 m3 . The supplied pressure leak-hole size and leakage amount were adjusted as the experimental conditions. The resulting hydrogen concentrations which changed according to the operation of the ventilation openings ventilation fan and supplied shutoff valve were measured. The experimental results showed that the reductions in the hydrogen concentration due to the shutoff valve were the most significant. The maximum hydrogen concentration could be reduced by 80% or more if it is 100 times that of the leakage volume or higher. The shutoff valve ventilation fan and ventilation openings were required to reduce the concentrations of the fuel cell room hydrogen in a spatially uniform manner. Although the hydrogen concentration in a small hydrogen fuel cell room for home use can rapidly increase a rapid reduction in the concentration of hydrogen with an appropriate ventilation system has been experimentally proven.
Assessment of Hydrogen Flame Length Full Bore Pipeline Rupture

The study aims at the development of a safety engineering methodology for the assessment of flame length after full-bore rupture of hydrogen pipeline. The methodology is validated using experimental data on hydrogen jet flame from full-bore pipeline rupture by Acton et al. (2010). The experimental pressure dynamics in the hydrogen pipeline system is simulated using previously developed adiabatic and “isothermal” blowdown models. The hydrogen release area is taken as equal similar to the experiment to doubled pipeline cross-section as hydrogen was coming out from both sides of the ruptured pipe. The agreement with the experimental pressure decay in the piping system was achieved using discharge coefficient CD=0.26 and CD=0.21 for adiabatic and “isothermal” blowdown model respectively that indicates significant friction and minor pressure losses. The hydrogen flame length was calculated using the dimensionless correlation by Molkov and Saffers (2013). The correlation relies on the density of hydrogen in the choked flow at the pipe exit. The maximum experimental flame length between 92 m and 111 m was recorded at 6 s after the pipe rupture under the ground. The calculated by the dimensionless correlation flame length is 110 m and 120 m for the “isothermal” and adiabatic blowdown model respectively. This is an acceptable accuracy for such a large-scale experiment. It is concluded that the methodology can be applied as an engineering tool to assess flame length resulting from ruptured hydrogen pipelines.
Analysis of a Large Balloon Explosion Incident

On December 19 2017 a large balloon containing about 22 thousand cubic meters of hydrogen was deliberately torn open to initiate deflation at the completion of a filling test. An inadvertent ignition occurred after about two seconds and caused an explosion that produced extensive light damage to a large building near the balloon test pad. The analysis described here includes an estimate of the buoyancy induced mixing into the torn balloon and the blast wave produced by assumed constant flame speed combustion of the 55% to 65% hydrogen-in-air mixture. Comparisons of calculated blast wave pressures are consistent with estimates of the pressure needed to cause the observed building damage for flame speeds in the range 85 m/s to about 100 m/s.
Numerical Study on Shockwave Attenuation by Water Mist in Confined Spaces

Hydrogen safety has become the first consideration especially after fuel cell automobiles were pushed into commercial auto market. Tunnels are important parts of traffic infrastructure featured in confinement or semi-confinement. Hydrogen detonation is a potential accident scenario while hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are operated in a traffic tunnel with a confined space. Pressure shockwaves are mostly produced by hydrogen detonation and propagate along the tunnel. As a designed safety measure water mist injection is hopefully to mitigate the pressure loads of such shocks. To model the interaction between shockwaves and water droplets a droplet breakup model has been developed for the COM3D code which is a highly validated three-dimensional hydrogen explosion simulation code. By using the model the hydrogen detonation shockwave propagation in confined volumes is simulated in the study. The attenuation effects of water mist on the pressure shocks in the simulations are elaborated and discussed based on the simulation results.
Quantitive Risk Assessment of the Model Representing Latest Japanese Hydrogen Refuelling Stations

Current safety codes and technical standards related to Japanese hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) have been established based on qualitative risk assessment and quantitative effectiveness validation of safety measures for more than ten years. In the last decade there has been significant development in the technologies and significant increment in operational experience related to HRSs. We performed a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of the HRS model representing Japanese HRSs with the latest information in the previous study. The QRA results were obtained by summing risk contours derived from each process unit. They showed that the risk contours of 10-3 and 10-4 per year were confined within the HRS boundaries whereas those of 10-5 and 10-6 per year are still present outside the HRS boundaries. Therefore we analyzed the summation of risk contours derived from each unit and identified the largest risk scenarios outside the station. The HRS model in the previous study did not consider fire and blast protection walls which could reduce the risks outside the station. Therefore we conducted a detailed risk analysis of the identified scenarios using 3D structure modeling. The heat radiation and temperature rise of jet fire scenarios that pose the greatest risk to the physical surroundings in the HRS model were estimated in detail based on computational fluid dynamics with 3D structures including fire protection walls. Results show that the risks spreading outside the north- west- and east-side station boundaries are expected to be acceptable by incorporating the fire protection wall into the Japanese HRS model.
Review on the Hydrogen Dispersion and the Burning Behavior of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

The development of a hydrogen energy-based society is becoming the solution for more and more countries. Fuel cell electric vehicles are the best carriers for developing a hydrogen energy-based society. The current research on hydrogen leakage and the diffusion of fuel cell electric vehicles has been sufficient. However the study of hydrogen safety has not reduced the safety concerns for society and government management departments concerning the large-scale promotion of fuel cell electric vehicles. Hydrogen safety is both a technical and psychological issue. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of fuel cell electric vehicles’ hydrogen dispersion and the burning behavior and introduce the relevant work of international standardization and global technical regulations. The CFD simulations in tunnels underground car parks and multistory car parks show that the hydrogen escape performance is excellent. At the same time the research verifies that the flow the direction of leakage and the vehicle itself are the most critical factors affecting hydrogen distribution. The impact of the leakage location and leakage pore size is much smaller. The relevant studies also show that the risk is still controllable even if the hydrogen leakage rate is increased ten times the limit of GTR 13 to 1000 NL/min and then ignited. Multi-vehicle combustion tests of fuel cell electric vehicles showed that adjacent vehicles were not ignited by the hydrogen. This shows that as long as the appropriate measures are taken the risk of a hydrogen leak or the combustion of fuel cell electric vehicles is controllable. The introduction of relevant standards and regulations also indirectly proves this point. This paper will provide product design guidelines for R&D personnel offer the latest knowledge and guidance to the regulatory agencies and increase the public’s acceptance of fuel cell electric vehicles.
Uncertainty of Acceleration of a Premixed Laminar Unstable Hydrogen Flame

Unstable hydrogen-air flame behavior randomities are important for industrial safety hydrogen infrastructure safety and nuclear power plant hydrogen safety problems. The paper is devoted to an experimental and theoretical study of the uncertainty in the acceleration of a premixed laminar unstable hydrogen flame. The results of experiments on spherical flame propagation in hydrogen-air mixtures with a hydrogen content of 10 to 60% are presented. The experiments were repeated up to 30 times in the same mixtures. A statistical analysis of the experimental results has been carried out. The scatter of the experimental data depending on the hydrogen content in the mixture was estimated. It was found to be between 8 to 17% for different mixtures with the same flame radius and mixture composition. Similar results were obtained using the numerical integration of the Sivashinsky equation of flame propagation.
CFD Modelling of Hydrogen and Hydrogen-methane Explosions - Analysis of Varying Concentration and Reduced Oxygen Atmospheres

This paper evaluates the predictive capabilities of the advanced consequence model FLACS-CFD for deflagrations involving hydrogen. Two modelling approaches are presented: the extensively validated model system originally developed for hydrocarbons included in FLACS-CFD 22.1 and a Markstein number dependent model implemented in the in-house version FLACS-CFD 22.1 IH. The ability of the models to predict the overpressure and the flame arrival time for scenarios with different concentrations of hydrogen and thus different Lewis and Markstein numbers is assessed. Furthermore the effect of adding methane or nitrogen on overpressure for different regimes of premixed combustion are investigated. The validation dataset includes deflagrations in the open or in congested open areas and vented deflagrations in empty or congested enclosures. The overpressure predictions by FLACS-CFD 22.1 IH are found to be more accurate than those obtained with FLACS-CFD 22.1 for scenarios with varying hydrogen concentrations and/or added nitrogen or methane in the mixture. The predictions by FLACS-CFD 22.1 IH for lean hydrogen mixtures are within a factor of 2 of the values observed in the experiments. Further development of the model is needed for more accurate prediction of deflagrations involving rich hydrogen mixtures as well as scenarios with other fuels and/or conditions where the initial pressure or temperature deviate significantly from ambient conditions.
Behavior of Barrier Wall under Hydrogen Storage Tank Explosion with Simulation and TNT Equivalent Weight Method

Hydrogen gas storage place has been increasing daily because of its consumption. Hydrogen gas is a dream fuel of the future with many social economic and environmental benefits to its credit. However many hydrogen storage tanks exploded accidentally and significantly lost the economy infrastructure and living beings. In this study a protection wall under a worst-case scenario explosion of a hydrogen gas tank was analyzed with commercial software LS-DYNA. TNT equivalent method was used to calculate the weight of TNT for Hydrogen. Reinforced concrete and composite protection wall under TNT explosion was analyzed with a different distance of TNT. The initial dimension of the reinforced concrete protection wall was taken from the Korea gas safety code book (KGS FP217) and studied the various condition. H-beam was used to make the composite protection wall. Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) simulation from LS-DYNA and ConWep pressure had a good agreement. Used of the composite structure had a minimum displacement than a normal reinforced concrete protection wall. During the worst-case scenario explosion of a hydrogen gas 300 kg storage tank the minimum distance between the hydrogen gas tank storage and protection wall should be 3.6 m.
Numerical Simulation of Leaking Hydrogen Dispersion Behavior

As one kind of clean zero carbon and sustainable energy hydrogen energy has been regarded as the most potential secondary energy. Recently hydrogen refueling station gradually becomes one of important distribution infrastructures that provides hydrogen sources for transport vehicles and other distribution devices. However the highly combustible nature of hydrogen may bring great hazards to environment and human. The safety design of hydrogen usage has been brought to public too. This paper is mainly focused on the hydrogen leakage and dispersion process. A new solver for gaseous buoyancy dispersion process is developed based on OpenFOAM [1]. Thermodynamic and transport properties of gases are updated by library Mutation ++ [2]. For validation two tests of hydrogen dispersion in partially opened space and closed space are presented. Numerical simulation of hydrogen dispersion behavior in hydrogen refueling station is carried out in this paper as well. From the results three phases of injection dispersion and buoyancy can be seen clearly. The profile of hydrogen concentration is tend to be Gaussian in dispersion region. Subsonic H2 jet in stagnant environment is calculated for refueling station the relationship between H2 concentration decay and velocity along the jet trajectory is obtained.
Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Low-density Gas Dispersion Characteristics in Semi-confined Environments

Hydrogen as a clean fuel offers a practical pathway to achieve net-zero targets. However due to its physical and chemical characteristics there are some safety concerns for large-scale hydrogen utilisation particularly in process safety management. Leakage of gaseous hydrogen especially in semi-confined spaces such as tunnels can lead to catastrophic outcomes including uncontrolled fire and explosion. The current paper describes the outcome of an experimental and numerical study that aims to understand the dispersion of leaked light gas in a semi-confined space to support the adoption of hydrogen. A dispersion chamber with dimensions of 4m × 0.3m × 0.3m was constructed to investigate a baseline gas leakage scenario. To reduce the risk of the experiment in the laboratory helium is utilised as a surrogate for hydrogen. Computational fluid dynamics simulations are con ducted using FLACS-CFD to model the dispersion of leaked gas in different scenarios focusing on the impact of the ventilation velocity leakage rate and slope. The results from comprehensive numerical simulations show that ventilation is a critical safety management measure that can significantly reduce the growth of flammable clouds and mitigate the fire and explosion risk. Even with the lowest ventilation velocity of 0.25 m/s an improvement in the gas concentration level of 29.34% can be achieved in the downstream chamber. The current results will help to further enhance the understanding of hydrogen safety aspects.
Multi-stage Monitoring of Hydrogen Systems for Improved Maintenance Approaches: An Extensive Review

Hydrogen is considered a promising solution for global decarbonisation as an alternative to fossil fuels. However it can interact with and brittle most metallic materials and is highly flammable. These properties call for a systematic investigation of physical and chemical hazards and for the definition of a comprehensive risk management and monitoring framework including proper maintenance planning. This study aims at establishing a hydrogen monitoring scheme and it provides a descriptive bibliometric and interpretative review of the current state-of-the-art of suitable techniques to ensure the safe handling of hydrogen systems. The descriptive analysis outlines the technologies available to supervise the hydrogen-material interactions and detect hydrogen leaks and flames. The bibliometric analysis shows quantitative data to identify the most relevant research groups. The interpretative study discusses the findings and examines the possibility of combining the identified techniques with maintenance programs to prevent catastrophic events.
Safety Criteria for the Transport of Hydrogen in Permanently Mounted Composite Pressure Vessels

The recent growth of the net of hydrogen fuelling stations increases the demands to transport compressed hydrogen on road by battery vehicles or tube-trailers both in composite pressure vessels. As a transport regulation the ADR is applicable in Europe and adjoined regions and is used for national transport in the EU. This regulation provides requirements based on the behaviour of each individual pressure vessel regardless of the pressure of the transported hydrogen and relevant consequences resulting from generally possible worst case scenarios such as sudden rupture. In 2012 the BAM (German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) introduced consequence-dependent requirements and established them in national transport requirements concerning the “UN service life checks” etc. to consider the transported volume and pressure of gases. This results in a requirement that becomes more restrictive as the product of pressure and volume increases. In the studies presented here the safety measures for hydrogen road transport are identified and reviewed through a number of safety measures from countries including Japan the USA and China. Subsequently the failure consequences of using trailer vehicles the related risk and the chance are evaluated. A benefit-related risk criterion is suggested to add to regulations and to be defined as a safety goal in standards for hydrogen transport vehicles and for mounted pressure vessels. Finally an idea is given for generating probabilistic safety data and for highly efficient evaluation without a significant increase of effort.
Hydrogen Jet Flame Simulation and Thermal Radiation Damage Estimation for Leakage Accidents in a Hydrogen Refueling Station

With the rapid development of hydrogen energy worldwide the number of hydrogen energy facilities such as hydrogen refueling stations has grown rapidly in recent years. However hydrogen is prone to leakage accidents during use which could lead to hazards such as fires and explosions. Therefore research on the safety of hydrogen energy facilities is crucial. In this paper a study of high-pressure hydrogen jet flame accidents is conducted for a proposed integrated hydrogen production and refueling station in China. The effects of leakage direction and leakage port diameter on the jet flame characteristics are analyzed and a risk assessment of the flame accident is conducted. The results showed that the death range perpendicular to the flame direction increased from 2.23 m to 5.5 m when the diameter of the leakage port increased from 4 mm to 10 mm. When the diameter of the leakage port is larger than 8 mm the equipment on the scene will be within the boundaries of the damage. The consequences of fire can be effectively mitigated by a reasonable firewall setup to ensure the overall safety of the integrated station.
Experimental and Modelling Study of an Electrochemical Hydrogen Compressor

The energy world is changing rapidly pushed also by the need for new green energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The fast development of renewable energies has created many problems associated with grid management and stability which could be solved with storage systems. The hydrogen economy could be an answer to the need of storage systems and clean fuel for transportation. The Electrochemical Hydrogen Compressor (EHC) is an electrochemical device which could find a place in this scenario giving a solution for the hydrogen purification and compression for storage. This work analyzes through experimental and modeling studies the performance of the EHC in terms of polarization curve Hydrogen Recovery Factor (HRF) and outlet hydrogen purity. The influence of many input parameters such as the total inlet flow rate the hydrogen inlet concentration the contaminant in the feed and the cathode pressure have been investigated. Furthermore the EHC performance have been modelled in a 1D + 1D model implemented in Matlab® solving the Butler-Volmer system of equations numerically. The experimental campaign has shown that high purities can be obtained for the hydrogen separation from N2 and CH4 and purities over 98% feeding He. An increase in the cathode pressure has shown a slight improvement in the obtained purity. A comparison between PSA unit and EHC for a mixture 75% H2 – 25% CH4 at different outlet hydrogen pressure and purity was performed to analyze the energy consumption required. Results show PSA unit is convenient at large scale and high H2 concentration while for low concentration is extremely energy intense. The EHC proved to be worthwhile at small scale and higher outlet hydrogen pressure.
The Effect of Defueling Rate on the Temperature Evolution of On-board Hydrogen Tanks

During the driving of a fuel cell car the expansion of the hydrogen along the emptying of the high pressure storage tank produces a cooling of the gas. The hydrogen vessel can experience a fast depressurization during acceleration or under an emergency release. This can result on the one hand in exceeding the low safety temperature limit of 40 C inside the on-board compressed hydrogen tank and on the other hand in the cooling of its walls. In the present paper defueling experiments of two different types of on-board hydrogen tanks (Type III and Type IV) have been performed in all the range of expected defueling rates. The lowest temperatures have been found on the bottom part of the Type IV tank in very fast defuelings. For average driving conditions in both types of vessels the inside gas temperature gets closer to that of the walls and the tank would arrive to the refuelling station at a temperature significantly lower than the ambient temperature.
