A Review on Industrial Perspectives and Challenges on Material, Manufacturing, Design and Development of Compressed Hydrogen Storage Tanks for the Transportation Sector

Hydrogen fuel cell technology is securing a place in the future of advanced mobility and the energy revolution as engineers explore multiple paths in the quest for decarbonization. The feasibility of hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles particularly relies on the development of safe lightweight and cost-competitive solutions for hydrogen storage. After the demonstration of hundreds of prototype vehicles today commercial hydrogen tanks are in the first stages of market introduction adopting configurations that use composite materials. However production rates remain low and costs high. This paper intends to provide an insight into the evolving scenario of solutions for hydrogen storage in the transportation sector. Current applications in different sectors of transport are covered focusing on their individual requirements. Furthermore this work addresses the efforts to produce economically attractive composite tanks discussing the challenges surrounding material choices and manufacturing practices as well as cutting-edge trends pursued by research and development teams. Key issues in the design and analysis of hydrogen tanks are also discussed. Finally testing and certification requirements are debated once they play a vital role in industry acceptance.
Exergy and Exergoeconomic Analysis for the Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis under Various Operating Conditions and Design Parameters

Integrating the exergy and economic analyses of water electrolyzers is the pivotal way to comprehend the interplay of system costs and improve system performance. For this a 3D numerical model based on COMSOL Multiphysics Software (version 5.6 COMSOL Stockholm Sweden) is integrated with the exergy and exergoeconomic analysis to evaluate the exergoeconomic performance of the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) under different operating conditions (operating temperature cathode pressure current density) and design parameter (membrane thickness). Further the gas crossover phenomenon is investigated to estimate the impact of gas leakage on analysis reliability under various conditions and criteria. The results reveal that increasing the operating temperature or decreasing the membrane thickness improves both the efficiency and cost of hydrogen exergy while increasing the gas leakage through the membrane. Likewise raising the current density and the cathode pressure lowers the hydrogen exergy cost and improves the economic performance. The increase in exergy destroyed and hydrogen exergy cost as well as the decline in second law efficiency due to the gas crossover are more noticeable at higher pressures. As the cathode pressure rises from 1 to 30 bar at a current density of 10000 A/m2 the increase in exergy destroyed and hydrogen exergy cost as well as the decline in second law efficiency are increased by 37.6 kJ/mol 4.49 USD/GJ and 7.1% respectively. The cheapest green electricity source which is achieved using onshore wind energy and hydropower reduces hydrogen production costs and enhances economic efficiency. The growth in the hydrogen exergy cost is by about 4.23 USD/GJ for a 0.01 USD/kWh increase in electricity price at the current density of 20000 A/m2. All findings would be expected to be quite useful for researchers engaged in the design development and optimization of PEMWE.
Life Cycle Performance of Hydrogen Production via Agro-Industrial Residue Gasification—A Small Scale Power Plant Study

This study evaluates the environmental profile of a real biomass-based hydrogen production small-scale (1 MWth) system composed of catalytic candle indirectly heated steam gasifier coupled with zinc oxide (ZnO) guard bed water gas shift (WGS) and pressure swing absorber (PSA) reactors. Environmental performance from cradle-to-gate was investigated by life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Biomass production shows high influence over all impact categories. In the syngas production process the main impacts observed are global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). Flue gas emission from gasifier burner has the largest proportion of total GWP. The residual off gas use in internal combustion engine (ICE) leads to important environmental savings for all categories. Hydrogen renewability score is computed as 90% due to over 100% decline in non-renewable energy demand. Sensitivity analysis shows that increase in hydrogen production efficiency does not necessarily result in decrease in environmental impacts. In addition economic allocation of environmental charges increases all impact categories especially AP and photochemical oxidation (POFP).
Carbon-free Green Hydrogen Production Process with Induction Heating-based Ammonia Decomposition Reactor

This study presents an induction heating-based reactor for ammonia decomposition and to achieve a 150 Nm3 /h carbon-free green hydrogen production process. The developed metallic monolith reactor acts by increasing the reactor temperature through an electromagnetic induction method using renewable-based electricity. As a result hydrogen is produced without the generation of air pollutants such as CO2 which are formed via the conventional production pathway. Furthermore techno-economic analysis was conducted based on exergy and economic analysis to evaluate the feasibility of the developed process. Experimentally the proposed reactor showed an ammonia conversion of 90.0 % at 600 ℃ and 7 barg. Exergy analysis indicated that the total unused exergy accounted for 45.79 % of the total exergy input giving an exergy efficiency of 54.21 % for the overall process. Furthermore the CAPEX and OPEX values are calculated as 1599567 USD and 644719 USD/y respectively; therefore the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) was calculated to be 6.98 USD/kgH2. This study also demonstrated that the LCOH varies with the ammonia feed price and the process capacity and so it would be expected to decrease from 6.98 to 5.33 USD/kgH2 as the hydrogen production capacity is increased from 150 to 500 Nm3 / h. Overall our results confirm the feasibility of carbon-free green hydrogen production on on-site hydrogen refueling stations and they will be expected to advance the development of an environmental hydrogen economy.
The Potential for Hydrogen Ironmaking in New Zealand

Globally iron and steel production is responsible for approximately 6.3% of global man-made carbon dioxide emissions because coal is used as both the combustion fuel and chemical reductant. Hydrogen reduction of iron ore offers a potential alternative ‘near-zero-CO2’ route if renewable electrical power is used for both hydrogen electrolysis and reactor heating. This paper discusses key technoeconomic considerations for establishing a hydrogen direct reduced iron (H2-DRI) plant in New Zealand. The location and availability of firm renewable electricity generation is described the experimental feasibility of reducing locally-sourced titanomagnetite irons and in hydrogen is shown and a high-level process flow diagram for a counter-flow electrically heated H2-DRI process is developed. The minimum hydrogen composition of the reactor off-gas is 46% necessitating the inclusion of a hydrogen recycle loop to maximise chemical utilisation of hydrogen and minimize costs. A total electrical energy requirement of 3.24 MWh per tonne of H2-DRI is obtained for the base-case process considered here. Overall a maximum input electricity cost of no more than US$80 per MWh at the plant is required to be cost-competitive with existing carbothermic DRI processes. Production cost savings could be achieved through realistic future improvements in electrolyser efficiency (∼ US$5 per tonne of H2-DRI) and heat exchanger (∼US$3 per tonne). We conclude that commercial H2-DRI production in New Zealand is entirely feasible but will ultimately depend upon the price paid for firm electrical power at the plant.
Sufficiency, Sustainability, and Circularity of Critical Materials for Clean Hydrogen

Effective global decarbonization will require an array of solutions across a portfolio of low-carbon resources. One such solution is developing clean hydrogen. This unique fuel has the potential to minimize climate change impacts helping decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry and global transport while also promoting energy security sustainable growth and job creation. The authors estimate suggest that hydrogen needs to grow seven-fold to support the global energy transition eventually accounting for ten percent of total energy consumption by 2050. A scaleup of this magnitude will increase demand for materials such as aluminum copper iridium nickel platinum vanadium and zinc to support hydrogen technologies - renewable electricity technologies and the electrolyzers for renewable hydrogen carbon storage for low-carbon hydrogen or fuel cells using hydrogen to power transport. This report a joint product of the World Bank and the Hydrogen Council examines these three critical areas. Using new data on the material intensities of key technologies the report estimates the amount of critical minerals needed to scale clean hydrogen. In addition it shows how incorporating sustainable practices and policies for mining and processing materials can help minimize environmental impacts. Key among these approaches is the use of recycled materials innovations in design in order to reduce material intensities and adoption of policies from the Climate Smart Mining (CSM) Framework to reduce impacts to greenhouse gas emissions and water footprint.

A Review of Key Components of Hydrogen Recirculation Subsystem for Fuel Cell Vehicles

Hydrogen energy and fuel cell technology are critical clean energy roads to pursue carbon neutrality. The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has a wide range of commercial application prospects due to its simple structure easy portability and quick start-up. However the cost and durability of the PEMFC system are the main barriers to commercial applications of fuel cell vehicles. In this paper the core hydrogen recirculation components of fuel cell vehicles including mechanical hydrogen pumps ejectors and gas–water separators are reviewed in order to understand the problems and challenges in the simulation design and application of these components. The types and working characteristics of mechanical pumps used in PEMFC systems are summarized. Furthermore corresponding design suggestions are given based on the analysis of the design challenges of the mechanical hydrogen pump. The research on structural design and optimization of ejectors for adapting wide power ranges of PEMFC systems is analyzed. The design principle and difficulty of the gas–water separator are summarized and its application in the system is discussed. In final the integration and control of hydrogen recirculation components controlled cooperatively to ensure the stable pressure and hydrogen supply of the fuel cell under dynamic loads are reviewed.
Mathematical Modeling of Unstable Transport in Underground Hydrogen Storage

Within the framework of energy transition hydrogen has a great potential as a clean energy carrier. The conversion of electricity into hydrogen for storage and transport is an efficient technological solution capable of significantly reducing the problem of energy shortage. Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is the best solution to store the large amount of excess electrical energy arising from the excessive over-production of electricity with the objective of balancing the irregular and intermittent energy production typical of renewable sources such as windmills or solar. Earlier studies have demonstrated that UHS should be qualitatively identical to the underground storage of natural gas. Much later however it was revealed that UHS is bound to incur peculiar difficulties as the stored hydrogen is likely to be used by the microorganisms present in the rocks for their metabolism which may cause significant losses of hydrogen. This paper demonstrates that besides microbial activities the hydrodynamic behavior of UHS is very unique and different from that of a natural gas storage.
Recent Progress in Ammonia Fuel Cells and their Potential Applications

Conventional technologies are largely powered by fossil fuel exploitation and have ultimately led to extensive environmental concerns. Hydrogen is an excellent carbon-free energy carrier but its storage and long-distance transportation remain big challenges. Ammonia however is a promising indirect hydrogen storage medium that has well-established storage and transportation links to make it an accessible fuel source. Moreover the notion of ‘green ammonia’ synthesised from renewable energy sources is an emerging topic that may open significant markets and provide a pathway to decarbonise a variety of applications reliant on fossil fuels. Herein a comparative study based on the chosen design working principles advantages and disadvantages of direct ammonia fuel cells is summarised. This work aims to review the most recent advances in ammonia fuel cells and demonstrates how close this technology type is to integration with future applications. At present several challenges such as material selection NOx formation CO2 tolerance limited power densities and long-term stability must still be overcome and are also addressed within the contents of this review
Experimental Study on Flame Characteristics of Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet Fire

In this work cryogenic hydrogen fires at fixed pressures and various initial temperatures were investigated experimentally. Flame length width heat fluxes and temperatures in down-stream regions were measured for the scenarios with 1.6-3 mm jet nozzle 106 to 273 K 2-5 barabs. The results show that the flame size is related to not only the jet nozzle diameter but also the release pressure and initial temperature. The correlations of normalized flame length and width are proposed with the stagnation pressure and the ratio of ambient and stagnation temperatures. Under constant pressure the flame size total radiative power and radiation fraction increase with the decrease of temperature due to lower choked flow velocity and higher density of cryogenic hydrogen. Quantifying the Potential of Renewable Natural Gas to Support a Reformed Energy Landscape: Estimates for New York State

Public attention to climate change challenges our locked-in fossil fuel-dependent energy sector. Natural gas is replacing other fossil fuels in our energy mix. One way to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) impact of fossil natural gas is to replace it with renewable natural gas (RNG). The benefits of utilizing RNG are that it has no climate change impact when combusted and utilized in the same applications as fossil natural gas. RNG can be injected into the gas grid used as a transportation fuel or used for heating and electricity generation. Less common applications include utilizing RNG to produce chemicals such as methanol dimethyl ether and ammonia. The GHG impact should be quantified before committing to RNG. This study quantifies the potential production of biogas (i.e. the precursor to RNG) and RNG from agricultural and waste sources in New York State (NYS). It is unique because it is the first study to provide this analysis. The results showed that only about 10% of the state’s resources are used to generate biogas of which a small fraction is processed to RNG on the only two operational RNG facilities in the state. The impact of incorporating a second renewable substitute for fossil natural gas “green” hydrogen is also analyzed. It revealed that injecting RNG and “green” hydrogen gas into the pipeline system can reduce up to 20% of the state’s carbon emissions resulting from fossil natural gas usage which is a significant GHG reduction. Policy analysis for NYS shows that several state and federal policies support RNG production. However the value of RNG can be increased 10-fold by applying a similar incentive policy to California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).
Fuel-scale Tunnel Experiments for Fuel Cell Hydrogen Vehicles: Gas Dispersion

In the framework of the HYTUNNEL-CS European project sponsored by FCH-JU a set of preliminary tests were conducted in a real tunnel in France. These tests are devoted to safety of hydrogen-fueled vehicles having a compressed gas storage and Temperature Pressure Release Device (TPRD). The goal of the study is to develop recommendations for Regulations Codes and Standards (RCS) for inherently safer use of hydrogen vehicles in enclosed transportation systems. In these preliminary tests the helium gas has been employed instead of hydrogen. Upward and downward gas releases following by TPRD activation has been considered. The experimental data describing local behavior (close to jet or below the chassis) as well as global behavior at the tunnel scale are obtained. These experimental data are systematically compared to existing engineering correlations. The results will be used for benchmarking studies using CFD codes. The hydrogen pressure range in these preliminary tests has been lowered down to 20MPa in order to verify the capability of various large-scale measurement techniques before scaling up to 70MPa the subject of the second campaign.
Power-to-Gas Hydrogen: Techno-economic Assessment of Processes Towards a Multi-purpose Energy Carrier

The present work investigates Power-to-Gas (PtG) options for variable Renewable Electricity storage into hydrogen through low temperature (alkaline and PEM) and high-temperature (SOEC) water electrolysis technologies. The study provides the assessment of the cost of the final product when hydrogen is employed for mobility (on-site refueling stations) electricity generation (by fuel cells in Power-to-Power systems) and grid injection in the natural gas network. Costs estimations are performed for 2013-2030 scenarios. A case study on the impact of variable Renewable Electricity storage by hydrogen generation on the Italian electricity and mobility sectors is presented.
Green Synthetic Fuels: Renewable Routes for the Conversion of Non-Fossil Feedstocks into Gaseous Fuels and Their End Uses

Innovative renewable routes are potentially able to sustain the transition to a decarbonized energy economy. Green synthetic fuels including hydrogen and natural gas are considered viable alternatives to fossil fuels. Indeed they play a fundamental role in those sectors that are difficult to electrify (e.g. road mobility or high-heat industrial processes) are capable of mitigating problems related to flexibility and instantaneous balance of the electric grid are suitable for large-size and long-term storage and can be transported through the gas network. This article is an overview of the overall supply chain including production transport storage and end uses. Available fuel conversion technologies use renewable energy for the catalytic conversion of non-fossil feedstocks into hydrogen and syngas. We will show how relevant technologies involve thermochemical electrochemical and photochemical processes. The syngas quality can be improved by catalytic CO and CO2 methanation reactions for the generation of synthetic natural gas. Finally the produced gaseous fuels could follow several pathways for transport and lead to different final uses. Therefore storage alternatives and gas interchangeability requirements for the safe injection of green fuels in the natural gas network and fuel cells are outlined. Nevertheless the effects of gas quality on combustion emissions and safety are considered.
Progress and Prospects of Hydrogen Production: Opportunities and challenges

This study presents an overview of the current status of hydrogen production in relation to the global requirement for energy and resources. Subsequently it symmetrically outlines the advantages and disadvantages of various production routes including fossil fuel/biomass conversion water electrolysis microbial fermentation and photocatalysis (PC) in terms of their technologies economy energy consumption and costs. Considering the characteristics of hydrogen energy and the current infrastructure issues it highlights that onsite production is indispensable and convenient for some special occasions. Finally it briefly summarizes the current industrialization situation and presents future development and research directions such as theoretical research strengthening renewable raw material development process coupling and sustainable energy use.
Emerging Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Technologies

Electrochemical cells and systems play a key role in a wide range of industry sectors. These devices are critical enabling technologies for renewable energy; energy management conservation and storage; pollution control/monitoring; and greenhouse gas reduction. A large number of electrochemical energy technologies have been developed in the past. These systems continue to be optimized in terms of cost life time and performance leading to their continued expansion into existing and emerging market sectors. The more established technologies such as deep-cycle batteries and sensors are being joined by emerging technologies such as fuel cells large format lithium-ion batteries electrochemical reactors; ion transport membranes and supercapacitors. This growing demand (multi-billion dollars) for electrochemical energy systems along with the increasing maturity of a number of technologies is having a significant effect on the global research and development effort which is increasing in both in size and depth. A number of new technologies which will have substantial impact on the environment and the way we produce and utilize energy are under development. This paper presents an overview of several emerging electrochemical energy technologies along with a discussion some of the key technical challenges.
Role of Hydrogen-based Energy Carriers as an Alternative Option to Reduce Residual Emissions Associated with Mid-century Decarbonization Goals

Hydrogen-based energy carriers including hydrogen ammonia and synthetic hydrocarbons are expected to help reduce residual carbon dioxide emissions in the context of the Paris Agreement goals although their potential has not yet been fully clarified in light of their competitiveness and complementarity with other mitigation options such as electricity biofuels and carbon capture and storage (CCS). This study aimed to explore the role of hydrogen in the global energy system under various mitigation scenarios and technology portfolios using a detailed energy system model that considers various energy technologies including the conversion and use of hydrogen-based energy carriers. The results indicate that the share of hydrogen-based energy carriers generally remains less than 5% of global final energy demand by 2050 in the 2 ◦C scenarios. Nevertheless such carriers contribute to removal of residual emissions from the industry and transport sectors under specific conditions. Their share increases to 10–15% under stringent mitigation scenarios corresponding to 1.5 ◦C warming and scenarios without CCS. The transport sector is the largest consumer accounting for half or more of hydrogen production followed by the industry and power sectors. In addition to direct usage of hydrogen and ammonia synthetic hydrocarbons converted from hydrogen and carbon captured from biomass or direct air capture are attractive transport fuels growing to half of all hydrogen-based energy carriers. Upscaling of electrification and biofuels is another common cost-effective strategy revealing the importance of holistic policy design rather than heavy reliance on hydrogen.
Implementation of Transition Metal Phosphides as Pt-Free Catalysts for PEM Water Electrolysis

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis (WE) produces H2 with a high degree of purity requiring only water and energy. If the energy is provided from renewable energy sources it releases “Green H2” a CO2 -free H2 . PEMWE uses expensive and rare noble metal catalysts which hinder their use at a large industrial scale. In this work the electrocatalytic properties of Transition Metal Phosphides (TMP) catalysts supported on Carbon Black (CB) for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) were investigated as an alternative to Platinum Group Metals. The physico-chemical properties and catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts were characterized. In the ex situ experiments the 25% FeP/CB 50% FeP/CB and 50% CoP/CB with overpotentials of −156.0 −165.9 and −158.5 mV for a current density of 100 mA cm−2 showed the best catalytic properties thereby progressing to the PEMWE tests. In those tests the 50% FeP/CB required an overpotential of 252 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm−2 quite close to the 220 mV of the Pt catalyst. This work provides a proper approach to the synthesis and characterization of TMP supported on carbon materials for the HER paving the way for further research in order to replace the currently used PGM in PEMWE.
Optimal Scheduling of a Hydrogen-Based Energy Hub Considering a Stochastic Multi-Attribute Decision-Making Approach

Nowadays the integration of multi-energy carriers is one of the most critical matters in smart energy systems with the aim of meeting sustainable energy development indicators. Hydrogen is referred to as one of the main energy carriers in the future energy industry but its integration into the energy system faces different open challenges which have not yet been comprehensively studied. In this paper a novel day-ahead scheduling is presented to reach the optimal operation of a hydrogen-based energy hub based on a stochastic multi-attribute decision-making approach. In this way the energy hub model is first developed by providing a detailed model of Power-to-Hydrogen (P2H) facilities. Then a new multi-objective problem is given by considering the prosumer’s role in the proposed energy hub model as well as the integrated demand response program (IDRP). The proposed model introduces a comprehensive approach from the analysis of the historical data to the final decision-making with the aim of minimizing the system operation cost and carbon emission. Moreover to deal with system uncertainty the scenario-based method is applied to model the renewable energy resources fluctuation. The proposed problem is defined as mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) and to solve this problem a simple augmented e-constrained (SAUGMECON) method is employed. Finally the simulation of the proposed model is performed on a case study and the obtained results show the effectiveness and benefits of the proposed scheme.
Bench-Scale Steam Reforming of Methane for Hydrogen Production

The effects of reaction parameters including reaction temperature and space velocity on hydrogen production via steam reforming of methane (SRM) were investigated using lab- and bench-scale reactors to identify critical factors for the design of large-scale processes. Based on thermodynamic and kinetic data obtained using the lab-scale reactor a series of SRM reactions were performed using a pelletized catalyst in the bench-scale reactor with a hydrogen production capacity of 10 L/min. Various temperature profiles were tested for the bench-scale reactor which was surrounded by three successive cylindrical furnaces to simulate the actual SRM conditions. The temperature at the reactor bottom was crucial for determining the methane conversion and hydrogen production rates when a sufficiently high reaction temperature was maintained (>800 ◦C) to reach thermodynamic equilibrium at the gas-hourly space velocity of 2.0 L CH4/(h·gcat). However if the temperature of one or more of the furnaces decreased below 700 ◦C the reaction was not equilibrated at the given space velocity. The effectiveness factor (0.143) of the pelletized catalyst was calculated based on the deviation of methane conversion between the lab- and bench-scale reactions at various space velocities. Finally an idling procedure was proposed so that catalytic activity was not affected by discontinuous operation.
Metal Hydroborates: From Hydrogen Stores to Solid Electrolyte

The last twenty years of an intense research on metal hydroborates as solid hydrogen stores and solid electrolytes are reviewed. It is shown that from the most promising application in hydrogen storage due to their high gravimetric and volumetric capacities the focus has moved to solid electrolytes due to high cation mobility in disordered structures with rotating or tumbling anions-hydroborate clusters. Various strategies of overcoming the strong covalent bonding of hydrogen in hydroborates for hydrogen storage and disordering their structures at room temperature for solid electrolytes are discussed. The important role of crystal chemistry and crystallography knowledge in material design can be read in the cited literature.

Since 2014 when the firm was founded within Anglo-American AP Ventures has been at the forefront of investment in hydrogen sector technologies. At the time the firm started the concerns around climate change and investment in renewable energy tech was gearing up but interest in hydrogen as part of the path to a decarbonized future was limited. The Role of Hydrocarbons in the Global Energy Agenda: The Focus on Liquefied Natural Gas

Presently there is a paradoxical situation in the global energy market related to a gap between the image of hydrocarbon resources (HCR) and their real value for the economy. On the one hand we face an increase in expected HCR production and consumption volumes both in the short and long term. On the other hand we see the formation of the image of HCR and associated technologies as an unacceptable option without enough attention to the differences in fuels and the ways of their usage. Due to this it seems necessary to take a step back to review the vitality of such a political line. This article highlights an alternative point of view with regard to energy development prospects. The purpose of this article is to analyse the consistency of criticism towards HCR based on exploration of scientific literature analytical documents of international corporations and energy companies as well as critical assessment of technologies offered for the HCR substitution. The analysis showed that: (1) it is impossible to substitute the majority of HCR with alternative power resources in the near term (2) it is essential that the criticism of energy companies with regard to their responsibility for climate change should lead not to destruction of the industry but to the search of sustainable means for its development (3) the strategic benchmarks of oil and coal industries should shift towards chemical production but their significance should not be downgraded for the energy sector (4) liquified natural gas (LNG) is an independent industry with the highest expansion potential in global markets in the coming years as compared to alternative energy options and (5) Russia possesses a huge potential for the development of the gas industry and particularly LNG that will be unlocked if timely measures on higher efficiency of the state regulation system are implemented.
Hydrogen Generation from Wood Chip and Biochar by Combined Continuous Pyrolysis and Hydrothermal Gasification

Hydrothermal gasification (HTG) experiments were carried out to extract hydrogen from biomass. Although extensive research has been conducted on hydrogen production with HTG limited research exists on the use of biochar as a raw material. In this study woodland residues (wood chip) and biochar from wood-chip pyrolysis were used in HTG treatment to generate hydrogen. This research investigated the effect of temperature (300–425 °C) and biomass/water (0.5–10) ratio on gas composition. A higher temperature promoted hydrogen production because the water–gas shift reaction and steam-reforming reaction were promoted with an increase in temperature. The methane concentration was related positively to temperature because of the methanation and hydrogenation reactions. A lower biomass/water ratio promoted hydrogen production but suppressed carbon-monoxide production. Most reactions that produce hydrogen consume water but water also affects the water–gas shift reaction balance which decreases the carbon-monoxide concentration. By focusing on the practical application of HTG we attempted biochar treatment by pyrolysis (temperature of heating part: 700 °C) and syngas was obtained from hydrothermal treatment above 425 °C.

Electrolysis produces pure hydrogen which is ideal for low temperature fuel cells for example in electric vehicles. Commercial electrolysers are on the market and have been in use for many years. Further technology developments will enable new generation electrolysers to be commercially competitive when used at scale with fluctuating renewable energy sources.

Outlook of Fermentative Hydrogen Production Techniques: An Overview of Dark, Photo and Integrated Dark-photo Fermentative Approach to Biomass

Biomass can be a sustainable choice for bioenergy production worldwide. Biohydrogen production using fermentative conversion of biomass has gained great interest during the last decade. Besides being an efficient transportation fuel biohydrogen can also be also be a low-carbon source of heat and electricity. Microbes assisted conversion (bioconversion) can be take place either in presence or absence of light. This is called photofermentation or dark-fermentation respectively. This review provides an overview of approaches of fermentative hydrogen production. This includes: dark photo and integrated fermentative modes of hydrogen production; the molecular basis behind its production and diverse range of its applicability industrially. Mechanistic understanding of the metabolic pathways involved in biomass-based fermentative hydrogen production are also reviewed.
Research Requirements to Move the Bar Forward Using Aqueous Formate Salts as H2 Carriers for Energy Storage Applications

In this perspective on hydrogen carriers we focus on the needs for the development of robust active catalysts for the release of H2 from aqueous formate solutions which are non-flammable non-toxic thermally stable and readily available at large scales at reasonable cost. Formate salts can be stockpiled in the solid state or dissolved in water for long term storage and transport using existing infrastructure. Furthermore formate salts are readily regenerated at moderate pressures using the same catalyst as for the H2 release. There have been several studies focused on increasing the activity of catalysts to release H2 at moderate temperatures i.e. < 80 °C below the operating temperature of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. One significant challenge to enable the use of aqueous formate salts as hydrogen carriers is the deactivation of the catalyst under operating conditions. In this work we provide a review of the most efficient heterogeneous catalysts that have been described in the literature their proposed modes of deactivation and the strategies reported to reactivate them. We discuss potential pathways that may lead to deactivation and strategies to mitigate it in a variety of H2 carrier applications. We also provide an example of a potential use case employing formate salts solutions using a fixed bed reactor for seasonal storage of energy for a microgrid application.
Safety Assessment of Hydrogen Jet Fire Scenarios within Semi-Confined Spaces

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) technology poses great promise as an alternative to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the transport sector’s emissions. However hydrogen fuel cell technology is relatively new therefore confirmation of the reliability and safety analysis is still required particularly for fire scenarios within confined spaces such as tunnels. This study applied the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in conjunction with probabilistic calculation methods to determine the associated thermal risk of a hydrogen jet fire in a tunnel and its dependency on scenarios with different tunnel slopes longitudinal and transverse ventilation velocities and fire positions. A large-scale model of 102 m in which the effects of outlined parameter variations on the severity of the fire incident were analysed. It is found that both tunnel ventilation techniques and slope were critical for the effective ejection of accumulated heat. With ventilation playing a primary role in the ejection of heat and gas and slope ensuring the stability of the ejected heat probabilities of thermal burns were found to be reduced by up to approximately 35% with a strong suggestion of critical combinations to further reduce the dangers of hydrogen tunnel fires.
Environmental and Energy Life Cycle Analyses of Passenger Vehicle Systems Using Fossil Fuel-derived Hydrogen

Hydrogen energy utilization is expected due to its environmental and energy efficiencies. However many issues remain to be solved in the social implementation of hydrogen energy through water electrolysis. This analyzes and compares the energy consumption and GHG emissions of fossil fuel-derived hydrogen and gasoline energy systems over their entire life cycle. The results demonstrate that for similar vehicle weights the hydrogen energy system consumes 1.8 MJ/km less energy and emits 0.15 kg-CO 2 eq./km fewer GHG emissions than those of the gasoline energy system. Hydrogen derived from fossil fuels may contribute to future energy systems due to its stable energy supply and economic efficiency. Lowering the power source carbon content also improved the environmental and energy efficiencies of hydrogen energy derived from fossil fuels.
Sustainability Assessment and Engineering of Emerging Aircraft Technologies—Challenges, Methods and Tools

Driven by concerns regarding the sustainability of aviation and the continued growth of air traffic increasing interest is given to emerging aircraft technologies. Although new technologies such as battery-electric propulsion systems have the potential to minimise in-flight emissions and noise environmental burdens are possibly shifted to other stages of the aircraft’s life cycle and new socio-economic challenges may arise. Therefore a life-cycle-oriented sustainability assessment is required to identify these hotspots and problem shifts and to derive recommendations for action for aircraft development at an early stage. This paper proposes a framework for the modelling and assessment of future aircraft technologies and provides an overview of the challenges and available methods and tools in this field. A structured search and screening process is used to determine which aspects of the proposed framework are already addressed in the scientific literature and in which areas research is still needed. For this purpose a total of 66 related articles are identified and systematically analysed. Firstly an overview of statistics of papers dealing with life-cycle-oriented analysis of conventional and emerging aircraft propulsion systems is given classifying them according to the technologies considered the sustainability dimensions and indicators investigated and the assessment methods applied. Secondly a detailed analysis of the articles is conducted to derive answers to the defined research questions. It illustrates that the assessment of environmental aspects of alternative fuels is a dominating research theme while novel approaches that integrate socio-economic aspects and broaden the scope to battery-powered fuel-cell-based or hybrid-electric aircraft are emerging. It also provides insights by what extent future aviation technologies can contribute to more sustainable and energy-efficient aviation. The findings underline the need to harmonise existing methods into an integrated modelling and assessment approach that considers the specifics of upcoming technological developments in aviation.
Analysis of a Large Balloon Explosion Incident

On December 19 2017 a large balloon containing about 22 thousand cubic meters of hydrogen was deliberately torn open to initiate deflation at the completion of a filling test. An inadvertent ignition occurred after about two seconds and caused an explosion that produced extensive light damage to a large building near the balloon test pad. The analysis described here includes an estimate of the buoyancy induced mixing into the torn balloon and the blast wave produced by assumed constant flame speed combustion of the 55% to 65% hydrogen-in-air mixture. Comparisons of calculated blast wave pressures are consistent with estimates of the pressure needed to cause the observed building damage for flame speeds in the range 85 m/s to about 100 m/s.
Accumulation of Inert Impurities in a Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell System with Anode Recirculation and Periodic Purge: A Simple Analytical Model

Anode recirculation with periodic purge is commonly used in polymer electrolyte fuel cell systems to control the accumulation of nitrogen water and other impurities that are present in the fuel or diffuse through the membrane from the cathode compartment. In this work we develop a simple generalized analytical model that simulates the time dependence of the accumulation of inert impurities in the anode compartment of such a system. It is shown that when there is transport out of the anode chamber the inert species is expected to accumulate exponentially until equilibrium is reached when the rate of inert entering the anode in the fuel supply and/or via crossover from the cathode is balanced by the rate of leakage and/or crossover to the cathode. The model is validated using recently published experimental data for the accumulation of N2 CH4 and CO2 in a recirculated system. The results show that nitrogen accumulation needs to be taken into account to properly adjust system parameters such as purge rate purge volume and recirculation rate. The use of this generalized analytical model is intended to aid the selection of these system parameters to optimize performance in the presence of inerts.

Challenges Toward Achieving a Successful Hydrogen Economy in the US: Potential End-use and Infrastructure Analysis to the Year 2100

Fossil fuels continue to exacerbate climate change due to large carbon emissions resulting from their use across a number of sectors. An energy transition away from fossil fuels seems inevitable and energy sources such as renewables and hydrogen may provide a low carbon alternative for the future energy system particularly in large emitting nations such as the United States. This research quantifies and maps potential hydrogen fuel distribution pathways for the continental US reflecting technological changes barriers to deployment and end-use-cases from 2020 to 2100 clarifying the potential role of hydrogen in the US energy transition. The methodology consists of two parts a linear optimization of the global energy system constrained by carbon reduction targets and system cost followed by a projection of hydrogen infrastructure development. Key findings include the emergence of trade pattern diversification with a greater variety of end-uses associated with imported fuels and greater annual hydrogen consumption over time. Further sensitivity analysis identified the influence of complementary technologies including nuclear power and carbon capture and storage technologies. We conclude that hydrogen penetration into the US energy system is economically viable and can contribute toward achieving Paris Agreement and more aggressive carbon reduction targets in the future.
Siting and Co-location with Hydrogen: What are the Risks?

The demand for hydrogen has grown more than threefold since 1975 [1] and price is expected to significantly decrease by 2030 [2] concluding in an expected continual increase in demand. HyLaw defined by Hydrogen Europe lays out recommendations for hydrogen applications using identified Legal and Administrative Processes (LAPs) across 18 European countries. Regarding site location HyLaw refers to the land use plan. This defines the production and storage of hydrogen as an industrial activity and therefore regardless of the specific site methods of production or use the hydrogen site must be within a permitted industrial zone or under specific condition commercial areas [3]. Local authorities fire departments and other concerned parties may need to be consulted on site suitability for the project. Risktec explores a range of considerations for siting and layout of hydrogen developments including co-location with other assets for example with renewable energy sources hazardous facilities or public structures. Good practice tools and assessment techniques are presented to mitigate the risks associated with the production storage and use of hydrogen not just the surrounding site and environment but the operatives of the facility.
The EOS Project- A SOFC Pilot Plant in Italy Safety Aspects

This paper deals with the main safety aspects of the EOS project. The partners of the project – Politecnico di Torino Gas Turbine Technologies (GTT Siemens group) Hysylab (Hydrogen System Laboratory) of Environment Park and Regione Piemonte – aim to create the main node of a regional fuel cell generator network. As a first step the Pennsylvania-based Stationary Fuel Cells division of Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) supplied GTT with a CHP 100 kWe SOFC (Solide Oxide Fuel Cell) field unit fuelled by natural gas with internal reforming. The fuel cell is connected to the electricity national grid and provides part of the industrial district energy requirement. The thermal energy from the fuel cells is used for heating and air-conditioning of GTT offices bringing the total first Law efficiency of the plant to 70-80%. In the second phase of the EOS project (2007/2008) the maximum power produced by the SOFC systems installed in the GTT EOS test room will be increased to a total of about 225 kWe by means of an additional SOFC generator rated 125 kWe and up to 115 kWth. The paper provides information about the safety analysis which was performed during the main steps of the design of the system i.e. the HAZOP during the SOFC design by SWPC and the safety evaluations during the test hall design by GTT and Politecnico di Torino.
How Flexible Electricity Demand Stabilizes Wind and Solar Market Values: The Case of Hydrogen Electrolyzers

Wind and solar energy are often expected to fall victim to their own success: the higher their share in electricity generation the more their revenue in electricity markets (their “market value”) declines. While market values may converge to zero in conventional power systems this study argues that “green” hydrogen production can effectively and permanently halt the decline by adding flexible electricity demand in low-price hours. To support this argument this article further develops the merit order model and uses price duration curves to include flexible hydrogen electrolysis and to derive an analytical formula for the minimum market value of renewables in the long-term market equilibrium. This hydrogen-induced minimum market value is quantified for a wide range of parameters using Monte Carlo simulations and complemented with results from a more detailed numerical electricity market model. It is shown that—due to flexible hydrogen production alone—market values across Europe will likely stabilize above €19 ± 9 MWh− 1 for solar energy and above €27 ± 8 MWh− 1 for wind energy in 2050 (annual mean estimate ± standard deviation). This is in the range of the projected levelized cost of renewables and other types of flexible electricity demand may further increase renewable market values. Market-based renewables may hence be within reach.
Impact and Challenges of Reducing Petroleum Consumption for Decarbonization

This study aimed to identify the impact of achieving the 1.5 ◦C target on the petroleum supply chain in Japan and discuss the feasibility and challenges of decarbonization. First a national material flow was established for the petroleum supply chain in Japan including processes for crude petroleum refining petroleum product manufacturing plastic resin and product manufacturing and by-product manufacturing. In particular by-product manufacturing processes such as hydrogen gaseous carbon dioxide and sulfur were selected because they are utilized in other industries. Next the outlook for the production of plastic resin hydrogen dry ice produced from carbon dioxide gas and sulfur until 2050 was estimated for reducing petroleum consumption required to achieve the 1.5 ◦C target. As a result national petroleum treatment is expected to reduce from 177048.00 thousand kl in 2019 to 126643.00 thousand kl in 2030 if the reduction in petroleum consumption is established. Along with this decrease plastic resin production is expected to decrease from 10500.00 thousand ton in 2019 to 7511.00 thousand ton by 2030. Conversely the plastic market is expected to grow steadily and the estimated plastic resin production in 2030 is expected to be 20079.00 thousand ton. This result indicates that there is a large output gap between plastic supply and demand. To mitigate this gap strongly promoting the recycling of waste plastics and making the price competitiveness of biomass plastics equal to that of petroleum-derived plastics are necessary
Decarbonising Heat in Buildings: Putting Consumers First

From an evaluation of the GB housing stock it is clear that a mosaic of low carbon heating technologies will be needed to reach net zero. While heat pumps are an important component of this mix our analysis shows that it is likely to be impractical to heat many GB homes with heat pumps only. A combination of lack of exterior space and/or the thermal properties of the building fabric mean that a heat pump is not capable of meeting the space heating requirement of 8 to 12m homes (or 37% to 54% of the 22.7m homes assessed in this report) or can do so only through the installation of highly disruptive and intrusive measures such as solid wall insulation. Hybrid heat pumps that are designed to optimise efficiency of the system do not have the same requirements of a heat pump and may be a suitable solution for some of these homes. This is likely to mean that decarbonised gas networks are therefore critical to delivery of net zero. 3 to 4m homes1 (or 14% to 18% of homes assessed in our analysis) could be made suitable for heat pump retrofit through energy efficiency measures such as cavity wall insulation. For 7 to 10m homes there are no limiting factors and they require minimal/no upgrade requirements to be made heat pump-ready. Nevertheless given firstly the levels of disruption to the floors and interiors of homes caused by the installation of heat pumps and secondly the cost and disruption associated with the requirement to significantly upgrade the electricity distribution networks to cope with large numbers of heat pumps operating at peak demand times - combined with the availability of a decarbonised gas network which requires a simple like-for-like boiler replacement - is likely to mean that many of these ‘swing’ properties will be better served through a gas based technology such as hydrogen (particularly when consumer choice is factored in) or a hybrid system. A recent trial run in winter 2018-19 by the Energy System Catapult revealed that all participants were reluctant to make expensive investments to improve the energy efficiency of their homes just to enhance the performance of their heat pump. They were more interested in less costly upgrades and tangible benefits such as lower bills or greater comfort. This means that renewable gases including hydrogen as heating fuels are a crucial component of the journey to net zero and the UK’s hydrogen ambitions should be reflective of this. The analysis presented in this paper focuses on the external fabric of the buildings further analysis should be undertaken to consider the internal system changes that would be required for heat pumps and hydrogen boilers for example BEIS Domestic Heat Distribution Systems: Gathering Report from February 2021 which considers the suitability of radiators for the low carbon transition.
Hydrogen Infrastructure Project Risks in The Netherlands

This study aims to assess the potential risks of setting up a hydrogen infrastructure in the Netherlands. An integrated risk assessment framework capable of analyzing projects identifying risks and comparing projects is used to identify and analyze the main risks in the upcoming Dutch hydrogen infrastructure project. A time multiplier is added to the framework to develop parameters. The impact of the different risk categories provided by the integrated framework is calculated using the discounted cash flow (DCF) model. Despite resource risks having the highest impact scope risks are shown to be the most prominent in the hydrogen infrastructure project. To present the DCF model results a risk assessment matrix is constructed. Compared to the conventional Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM) used to present project risks this matrix presents additional information in terms of the internal rate of return and risk specifics.
Quantitative Monitoring of the Environmental Hydrogen Embrittlement of Al-Zn-Mg-based Aluminum Alloys via Dnyamic Hydrogen Detection and Digital Image Correlation

In this study a novel analytical system was developed to monitor the environmental hydrogen embrittlement of Al-Zn-Mg-based aluminum alloys dynamically and quantitatively under atmospheric air pressure. The system involves gas chromatography using a SnO2-based semiconductor hydrogen sensor a digital image correlation step and the use of a slow strain rate testing machine. Use of this system revealed that hydrogen atoms are generated during the plastic deformation of Al-Zn-Mg alloys caused by the chemical reaction between the water vapor in air and the alloy surface without oxide films. Digital image correlation also clarified that the generated hydrogen atoms caused numerous localized grain boundary cracks on the specimen surface resulting in a localized grain boundary fracture. The amount of hydrogen atoms evolved from the embrittled fracture surface was 2.7 times as high as that from the surface without embrittlement.

Nowadays less than 4% of hydrogen production is based on electrolysis processes. Each component of a hydrogen energy system needs to be optimized to increase the operation time and system efficiency. Only in this way hydrogen produced by electrolysis processes can be competitive with the conventional fossil energy sources. As conventional electrolysers are designed for operation at fixed process conditions the implementation of fluctuating and highly intermittent renewable energy is challenging. Alkaline water electrolysis is a key technology for large-scale hydrogen production powered by renewable energy. At low power availability conventional alkaline water electrolysers show a limited part-load range due to an increased gas impurity. Explosive mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen must be prevented; thus a safety shutdown is performed when reaching specific gas contamination. The University of Pisa is setting up a dedicated laboratory including a 40-kW commercial alkaline electrolyser: the focus of the study is to analyze the safety of the electrolyser together with its performance and the real energy efficiency analyzing its operational data collected under different operating conditions affected by the unstable energy supply.
Onshore, Offshore or In-turbine Electrolysis? Techno-economic Overview of Alternative Integration Designs for Green Hydrogen Production into Offshore Wind Power Hubs

Massive investments in offshore wind power generate significant challenges on how this electricity will be integrated into the incumbent energy systems. In this context green hydrogen produced by offshore wind emerges as a promising solution to remove barriers towards a carbon-free economy in Europe and beyond. Motivated by the recent developments in Denmark with the decision to construct the world’s first artificial Offshore Energy Hub this paper investigates how the lowest cost for green hydrogen can be achieved. A model proposing an integrated design of the hydrogen and offshore electric power infrastructure determining the levelised costs of both hydrogen and electricity is proposed. The economic feasibility of hydrogen production from 2 Offshore Wind Power Hubs is evaluated considering the combination of different electrolyser placements technologies and modes of operations. The results show that costs down to 2.4 €/kg can be achieved for green hydrogen production offshore competitive with the hydrogen costs currently produced by natural gas. Moreover a reduction of up to 13% of the cost of wind electricity is registered when an electrolyser is installed offshore shaving the peak loads.

A Catalyst Fusible Link for Hydrogen Detection and Activation of Passive Ventilation Systems

This paper presents an experimental study of a hydrogen fusible link developed for use in the detection of hydrogen and in the activation of passive ventilation or other safety systems. Fusible links are commonly used to passively close fire dampers in the event of a fire; they generally consist of two pieces of metal joined together by a low temperature alloy to form a single device. When exposed to fire the link will heat up and eventually melt the alloy causing the metal pieces to separate. The same principle has been adopted for the hydrogen fusible link in which hydrogen recombiner catalyst was coated onto small rectangular brass plates. These plates were then soldered together to create prototypes of the hydrogen fusible link. When the resulting link is exposed to a hydrogen-air mixture an exothermic reaction occurs on the catalyst surface that will heat up the link and melt the solder separating the two sections of the hydrogen fusible link. A series of experiments was performed to characterize the thermal response of the hydrogen fusible links to various hydrogen-air mixtures. The effect of both hydrogen concentration and its rate of accumulation on the increase of catalyst temperature was examined. This study demonstrated the applicability of the hydrogen fusible link for managing hydrogen risk.
The Upfront Cost of Decarbonising Your Home

The objective of this report is to analyse the upfront capital costs facing consumers when considering the installation of new low carbon heating technology solutions for their homes today including the cost of any associated home upgrades that will likely be required. The UK Government have recently published its Heat and Buildings Strategy which sets out plans to significantly cut carbon emissions from the existing housing stock and new homes. Whilst the Strategy points to a future role for a variety of technologies such as heat pumps hydrogen and heat networks the success of this Strategy will largely be determined by the ability to achieve installed cost reductions for heat pumps of at least 25-50% by 2025 with the view to achieving cost parity with a gas boiler by 2030. The purpose of this report is to launch a series which tracks the upfront costs of these respective technologies over time to establish whether the cost reduction targets mooted by government and heat pump stakeholders are being delivered and the implications this has on our ability to decarbonise the UK housing stock.
Solar Fuel Processing: Comparative Mini-review on Research, Technology Development, and Scaling

Solar energy provides an unprecedented potential as a renewable and sustainable energy resource and will substantially reshape our future energy economy. It is not only useful in producing electricity but also (hightemperature) heat and fuel both required for non-electrifiable energy services. Fuels are particularly valuable as they are energy dense and storable and they can also act as a feedstock for the chemical industry. Technical pathways for the processing of solar fuels include thermal pathways (e.g. solar thermochemistry) photo pathways (e.g. photoelectrochemistry) and combinations thereof. A review of theoretical limits indicates that all technical solar fuel processing pathways have the potential for competitive solar-to-fuel efficiencies (>10 %) but require very different operating conditions (e.g. temperature levels or oxygen partial pressures) making them complementary and highly versatile for process integration. Progress in photoelectrochemical devices and solar thermochemical reactors over the last 50 + years are summarized showing encouraging trends in terms of performance technological viability and scaling.
Assessment of the Economic Efficiency of the Operation of Low-Emission and Zero-Emission Vehicles in Public Transport in the Countries of the Visegrad Group

Transport is one of the key sectors of the European economy. However the intensive development of transport caused negative effects in the form of an increase in the emission of harmful substances. The particularly dramatic situation took place in the V4 countries. This made it necessary to implement solutions reducing emissions in transport including passenger transport. Such activities can be implemented in the field of implementation of low-emission and zero-emission vehicles for use. That is why the European Union and the governments of the Visegrad Group countries have developed numerous recommendations communications laws and strategies that order carriers to implement low- and zero-emission mobility. Therefore transport organizers and communication operators faced the choice of the type of buses. From an economic point of view each entrepreneur is guided by the economic efficiency of the vehicles used. Hence the main aim of the article was to conduct an economic evaluation of the operational efficiency of ecological vehicles. As more than 70% of vehicles in use in the European Union are still diesel driven the economic efficiency assessment was also made for vehicles with traditional diesel drive. To conduct the research the method of calculating the total cost of ownership of vehicles in operation was used. As a result of the research it was found that electric buses are the cheapest in the entire period of use (15 years) and then those powered by CNG. On the other hand the cost of using hydrogen buses is the highest. This is due to the high purchase prices of these vehicles. However the EU as well as the governments of individual countries support enterprises and communication operators by offering them financing for investments. The impact of the forecasted fuel and energy prices and the planned inflation on operating costs was also examined. In this case the analyses showed that the forecasted changes in fuel and energy prices as well as the expected inflation will significantly affect the costs of vehicle operation and the economic efficiency of using various types of drives. These changes will have a positive impact on the implementation of zero-emission vehicles into exploitation. Based on the analyses it was found that in 2035 hydrogen buses will have the lowest operating costs.
Establishing the State of the Art for the Definition of Safety Distances for Hydrogen Refuelling Stations

Hydrogen is widely considered a clean source of energy from the viewpoint of reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as a countermeasure against global warming and air pollution. Various efforts have been made to develop hydrogen as a viable energy carrier including the implementation of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). A good network of hydrogen refuelling stations is essential for operating FCVs and several hydrogen refuelling stations have been constructed and are in operation worldwide [1]. However despite the potential benefits of hydrogen its flammability creates significant safety concerns. Furthermore even though the energy density of hydrogen is lower than that of gasoline and there is no carbon present which means the amount of radiant heat flux released during combustion is relatively small hydrogen must be handled at high pressure in order to make the cruising range of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) equal to that of gasoline-powered vehicles. Therefore it is essential to properly evaluate these safety concerns and take reasonable and effective countermeasures. Approximately 50 accidents and incidents involving HRSs have been reported globally [2]. Sakamoto et al. [2] analysed accidents and incidents at HRSs in Japan and the USA to identify the safety issues. Most types of accidents and incidents are small leakages of hydrogen but some have led to serious consequences such as fire and explosion. Recently there was a serious incident in Norway at Kjørbo where a strong explosion was observed [3] – indeed this was within a short time of two other serious incidents in the USA and South Korea showing that the frequency of such incidents may be higher as deployments increase. Use of hydrogen forklifts (and the associated refuelling infrastructure) is another challenge to consider. Hydrogen refuelling stations are often installed in urban areas facing roads and are readily accessible to everyone. Therefore a key measure to approve the hydrogen refuelling stations is safety distances between the hydrogen infrastructure and the surrounding structures such as office buildings or residential dwellings. Whilst a lot of work has been carried out on safety distances (see e.g. [4-6) the accident scenario assumptions and safety distances varied widely in those studies. As a result no consensus has yet emerged on the safety distances to be used and efforts are still needed to bridge the gap between international standards and local regulations (see e.g. [7-8]). The paper analyses this issue and provides guidance on the way forward.
Blast Wave Generated by Delayed Ignition of Under-Expanded Hydrogen Free Jet at Ambient and Cryogenic Temperatures

An under-expanded hydrogen jet from high-pressure equipment or storage tank is a potential incident scenario. Experiments demonstrated that the delayed ignition of a highly turbulent under-expanded hydrogen jet generates a blast wave able to harm people and damage property. There is a need for engineering tools to predict the pressure effects during such incidents to define hazard distances. The similitude analysis is applied to build a correlation using available experimental data. The dimensionless blast wave overpressure generated by delayed ignition and the follow-up deflagration or detonation of hydrogen jets at an any location from the jet ∆Pexp/P0 is correlated to the original dimensionless parameter composed of the product of the dimensionless ratio of storage pressure to atmospheric pressure Ps/P0 and the ratio of the jet release nozzle diameter to the distance from the centre of location of the fast-burning near-stoichiometric mixture on the jet axis (30% of hydrogen in the air by volume) to the location of a target (personnel or property) d/Rw. The correlation is built using the analysis of 78 experiments regarding this phenomenon in the wide range of hydrogen storage pressure of 0.5–65.0 MPa and release diameter of 0.5–52.5 mm. The correlation is applicable to hydrogen free jets at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. It is found that the generated blast wave decays inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the fast-burning portion of the jet. The correlation is used to calculate the hazard distances by harm thresholds for five typical hydrogen applications. It is observed that in the case of a vehicle with onboard storage tank at pressure 70 MPa the “no-harm” distance for humans reduces from 10.5 m to 2.6 m when a thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) diameter decreases from 2 mm to a diameter of 0.5 mm.

The Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns with a brief period of excess supply and low prices gave way to tight energy markets extreme price volatility and a compounding geopolitical challenge to energy security. At the time of writing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has been affecting the flows of gas and has put Europe on a quest to diversify its energy and gas supply that is now opening a new paradigm in the energy industry. This report comes at a time when the situation for global commodity and gas markets is in a state of rapid change and the strategic path forwards for the gas industry and energy policy-makers is continually developing. One thing is clear this is a critical and decisive moment for the gas industry. How it navigates the way through this crisis and charts a path forward will shape its long-term success and the role that it will play in the energy transition and beyond. This is the moment for the gas industry to demonstrate that gas can deliver a sustainable and secure energy future for all and that natural gas and a portfolio of decarbonized low- and zero-carbon gases are key to an achievable energy transition. This year’s report assesses key gas market trends from 2020 and 2021 including Covid-19 outcomes tightness of supply price volatility investments and the upward reversal in the global emissions trend. It then turns to the main topic on the global energy agenda – security – and considers key variables impacting it from industry and policy perspectives as well as considering possible paths to reinforce it. Finally the report looks at the main decarbonization pathways for gas supply as they progressively develop to make gas itself a low or zero-carbon fuel for the future. This report seeks to deliver insights about the global gas sector and to inform its stakeholders partners and importantly global decision-makers about the state of play today and possibilities for the future. It concludes with key insights on how sustainability security and competitiveness can help to deliver a sustainable future in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Agenda.
Influence of Non-equilibrium Conditions on Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tank Behavior

In a liquid hydrogen storage tank hydrogen vapor exists above the cryogenic liquid. A common modeling assumption of a liquid hydrogen tank is thermodynamic equilibrium. However this assumption may not hold in all conditions. A non-equilibrium storage tank with a pressure relief valve and a burst disc in parallel was modeled in this work. The model includes different boiling regimes to handle scenarios with high heat transfer. The model was first validated with a scenario where normal boil-off from an unused tank was compared to experimental data. Then four abnormal tank scenarios were explored: a loss of vacuum in the insulation layer a high ambient temperature (to simulate an engulfing fire) a high ambient temperature with a simultaneous loss of vacuum and high conduction through the insulation layer. The burst disc of the tank opened only in the cases with extreme heat transfer to the tank (i.e. fire with a loss of vacuum and high insulation conductivity) quickly releasing the hydrogen. In the cases with only a loss of vacuum or only external heat from fire the pressure relief valve on the tank managed to moderate the pressure below the burst disc activation pressure. The high insulation conductivity case highlights differences between the equilibrium and non-equilibrium tank models. The mass loss from the tank through the burst disc is slower using a non-equilibrium model because mass transfer from the liquid to gas phase within the tank becomes limiting. The implications of this model and how it can be used to help inform safety codes and standards are discussed.
CO2 Emissions Reduction through Increasing H2 Participation in Gaseous Combustible—Condensing Boilers Functional Response

Considering the imperative reduction in CO2 emissions both from household heating and hot water producing facilities one of the mainstream directions is to reduce hydrocarbons in combustibles by replacing them with hydrogen. The authors analyze condensing boilers operating when hydrogen is mixed with standard gaseous fuel (CH4 ). The hydrogen (H2 ) volumetric participation in the mixture is considered to vary in the range of 0 to 20%. The operation of the condensing boilers will be numerically modeled by computational programs and prior validated by experimental studies concluded in a European Certified Laboratory. The study concluded that an increase in the combustible flow with 16% will compensate the maximum H2 concentration situation with no other implications on the boiler’s thermal efficiency together with a decrease in CO2 emissions by approximately 7%. By assuming 0.9 (to/year/boiler) the value of CO2 emissions reduction for the condensing boiler determined in the paper and extrapolating it for the estimated number of boilers to be sold for the period 2019–2024 a 254700-ton CO2/year reduction resulted.

Effect of Heat Transfer through the Release of Pipe on Simulations of Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet Fires and Hazard Distances

Jet flames originated by cryo-compressed ignited hydrogen releases can cause life-threatening conditions in their surroundings. Validated models are needed to accurately predict thermal hazards from a jet fire. Numerical simulations of cryogenic hydrogen flow in the release pipe are performed to assess the effect of heat transfer through the pipe walls on jet parameters. Notional nozzle exit diameter is calculated based on the simulated real nozzle parameters and used in CFD simulations as a boundary condition to model jet fires. The CFD model was previously validated against experiments with vertical cryogenic hydrogen jet fires with release pressures up to 0.5 MPa (abs) release diameter 1.25 mm and temperatures as low as 50 K. This study validates the CFD model in a wider domain of experimental release conditions - horizontal cryogenic jets at exhaust pipe temperature 80 K pressure up to 2 MPa abs and release diameters up to 4 mm. Simulation results are compared against experimentally measured parameters as hydrogen mass flow rate flame length and radiative heat flux at several locations from the jet fire. The CFD model reproduces well experiments with reasonable engineering accuracy. Jet fire hazard distances established using three different criteria - temperature thermal radiation and thermal dose - are compared and discussed based on CFD simulation results.

Solutions across four categories of storage namely: mechanical chemical electromagnetic and thermal storage are compared on the basis of energy/power density specific energy/power efficiency lifespan cycle life self-discharge rates capital energy/power costs scale application technical maturity as well as environmental impact. It’s noted that virtually every storage technology is seeing improvements. This paper provides an overview of some of the problems with existing storage systems and identifies some key technologies that hold promise.
Potentials of Hydrogen Technologies for Sustainable Factory Systems

The industrial sector is the world’s second largest emitter of greenhouse gases hence a methodology for decarbonizing factory systems is crucial for achieving global climate goals. Hydrogen is an important medium for the transition towards carbon neutral factories due to its broad applicability within the factory including its use in electricity and heat generation and as a process gas or fuel. One of the main challenges is the identification of economically and environmentally suitable design scenarios such as for the entire value chain for hydrogen generation and application. For example the infrastructure for renewable electricity hydrogen generation hydrogen conversion (e.g. into synthetic fuels) storage and transport systems as well as application in the factory. Due to the high volatility of energy generation and the related dynamic interdependencies within a factory system a valid technical economic and environmental evaluation of benefits induced by hydrogen technologies can only be achieved using digital factory models. In this paper we present a framework to integrate hydrogen technologies into factory systems. This enables decision makers to identify promising measures according to their expected impact and collect data for appropriate factory modelling. Furthermore a concept for factory modelling and simulation is presented and demonstrated in a case study from the electronics industry assessing the use of hydrogen for decentralized power and heat generation.
Investigation on the Changes of Pressure and Temperature in High Pressure Filling of Hydrogen Storage Tank

Hydrogen as fuel has been considered as a feasible energy carry and which offers a clean and efficient alternative for transportation. During the high pressure filling the temperature in the hydrogen storage tank (HST) may rise rapidly due to the hydrogen compression. The high temperature may lead to safety problem. Thus for fast and safely refueling the hydrogen several key factors need to be considered. In the present study by the thermodynamics theories a mathematical model is established to simulate and analyze the high pressure filling process of the storage tank for the hydrogen station. In the analysis the physical parameters of normal hydrogen are introduced to make the simulation close to the actual process. By the numerical simulation for 50 MPa compressed hydrogen tank the temperature and pressure trends during filling are obtained. The simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the theoretically calculated ones for adiabatic conditions and the simulation results for non-adiabatic filling were compared with the simulation ones for adiabatic conditions. Then the influence of working pressure initial temperature mass flow rate initial pressure and inlet temperature on the temperature rise were analyzed. This study provides a theoretical research basis for high pressure hydrogen energy storage and hydrogenation technology.
Baselining the Body of Knowledge for Hydrogen Shock Interactions and Debris Escalation

The differences in behaviour of hydrogen when compared to natural gas under deflagration and detonation scenarios are well known. The authors currently work in the area of fire and explosion analysis and have identified what they feel are potential gaps in the current Body of Knowledge (BOK) available to the sector. This is especially related to the behaviour around secondary shock formation and interactions with surrounding structures especially with ‘open’ structures such as steel frameworks typically seen in an offshore environment and practicable methods for determining debris formation and propagation. Whilst the defence sector has extensive knowledge in these areas this is primarily in the area of high explosives where the level of shocks observed is stronger than those resulting from a hydrogen detonation. This information would need to be reviewed and assessed to ensure it is appropriate for application in the hydrogen sector. Therefore with a focus on practicality the authors have undertaken a two-phase approach. The first phase involves carrying out a through literature search and discussions within our professional networks in order to ascertain whether there is a gap in the BOK. If good research guidance and tools to support this area of assessment already exist the authors have attempted to collate and consolidate this into a form that can be made more easily available to the community. Secondly if there is indeed a gap in the BOK the authors have attempted to ensure that all relevant information is collated to act as a reference and provide a consistent baseline for future research and development activities.
Prospects of Fuel Cell Combined Heat and Power Systems

Combined heat and power (CHP) in a single and integrated device is concurrent or synchronized production of many sources of usable power typically electric as well as thermal. Integrating combined heat and power systems in today’s energy market will address energy scarcity global warming as well as energy-saving problems. This review highlights the system design for fuel cell CHP technologies. Key among the components discussed was the type of fuel cell stack capable of generating the maximum performance of the entire system. The type of fuel processor used was also noted to influence the systemic performance coupled with its longevity. Other components equally discussed was the power electronics. The thermal and water management was also noted to have an effect on the overall efficiency of the system. Carbon dioxide emission reduction reduction of electricity cost and grid independence were some notable advantages associated with fueling cell combined heat and power systems. Despite these merits the high initial capital cost is a key factor impeding its commercialization. It is therefore imperative that future research activities are geared towards the development of novel and cheap materials for the development of the fuel cell which will transcend into a total reduction of the entire system. Similarly robust systemic designs should equally be an active research direction. Other types of fuel aside hydrogen should equally be explored. Proper risk assessment strategies and documentation will similarly expand and accelerate the commercialization of this novel technology. Finally public sensitization of the technology will also make its acceptance and possible competition with existing forms of energy generation feasible. The work in summary showed that proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM fuel cell) operated at a lower temperature-oriented cogeneration has good efficiency and is very reliable. The critical issue pertaining to these systems has to do with the complication associated with water treatment. This implies that the balance of the plant would be significantly affected; likewise the purity of the gas is crucial in the performance of the system. An alternative to these systems is the PEM fuel cell systems operated at higher temperatures.
Effect on Diesel Engine Performance Parameters Using Hydrogen and Oxygen Produced on Demand

Hydrogen is seen as a future energy carrier since its chemical compounds make up a large part of the Earth’s surface. This study sought to analyze the impact related to the inclusion of hydrogen and oxygen gases produced on demand by an alkaline electrolyzer to the engine added directly through the fuel intake line. For this purpose performance parameters were monitored such as liquid fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions and correlated to any effect observed on the engine’s power output and combustion behavior. A 58 kVA nominal power motor-generator was used coupled with a resistive load bank (20 kW) where two fuel configurations were tested (diesel injection only and a mixture of diesel hydrogen and oxygen) and compared. A total of 42 tests were performed considering both the admission gases into the fuel intake line and also diesel supply only for baseline. A substantial decrease in fuel consumption was observed (7.59%) when the blend configuration was used despite a decrease in the engine’s work (1.07%). It was also possible to see a common pattern between NO and NO2 emissions for both fuel configurations while the behavior of the CO2 and CO emissions indicated a higher complete diesel burning fraction when using the gases on demand. Therefore we can verify that the use of hydrogen and oxygen gases produced on demand in the fuel intake line is a promising alternative to provide a decrease in liquid fuel consumption and an overall improvement in engine combustion.
New Insights into Hydrogen Uptake on Porous Carbon Materials via Explainable Machine Learning

To understand hydrogen uptake in porous carbon materials we developed machine learning models to predict excess uptake at 77 K based on the textural and chemical properties of carbon using a dataset containing 68 different samples and 1745 data points. Random forest is selected due to its high performance (R2 > 0.9) and analysis is performed using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). It is found that pressure and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area are the two strongest predictors of excess hydrogen uptake. Surprisingly this is followed by a positive correlation with oxygen content contributing up to ∼0.6 wt% additional hydrogen uptake contradicting the conclusions of previous studies. Finally pore volume has the smallest effect. The pore size distribution is also found to be important since ultramicropores (dp < 0.7 nm) are found to be more positively correlated with excess uptake than micropores (dp < 2 nm). However this effect is quite small compared to the role of BET surface area and total pore volume. The novel approach taken here can provide important insights in the rational design of carbon materials for hydrogen storage applications.
Numerical Modeling for Rapid Charging of Hydrogen Gas Vessel in Fuel Cell Vehicle

As a fuel for power generation high-pressure hydrogen gas is widely used for transportation and its efficient storage promotes the development of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). However as the filling process takes such a short time the maximum temperature in the storage tank usually undergoes a rapid increase which has become a thorny problem and poses great technical challenges to the steady operation of hydrogen FCVs. For security reasons SAE J2601/ISO 15869 regulates a maximum temperature limit of 85 ◦C in the specifications for refillable hydrogen tanks. In this paper a two-dimensional axisymmetric and a three-dimensional numerical model for fast charging of Type III 35 MPa and 70 MPa hydrogen vehicle cylinders are proposed in order to effectively evaluate the temperature rise within vehicle tanks. A modified standard k-ε turbulence model is utilized to simulate hydrogen gas charging. The equation of state for hydrogen gas is adopted with the thermodynamic properties taken from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database taking into account the impact of hydrogen gas’ compressibility. To validate the numerical model three groups of hydrogen rapid refueling experimental data are chosen. After a detailed comparison it is found that the simulated results calculated by the developed numerical model are in good agreement with the experimental results with average temperature differences at the end time of 2.56 K 4.08 K and 4.3 K. The present study provides a foundation for in-depth investigations on the structural mechanics analysis of hydrogen gas vessels during fast refueling and may supply some technical guidance on the design of charging experiments.

Optimal Scheduling of Multi-energy Type Virtual Energy Storage System in Reconfigurable Distribution Networks for Congestion Management

The virtual energy storage system (VESS) is one of the emerging novel concepts among current energy storage systems (ESSs) due to the high effectiveness and reliability. In fact VESS could store surplus energy and inject the energy during the shortages at high power with larger capacities compared to the conventional ESSs in smart grids. This study investigates the optimal operation of a multi-carrier VESS including batteries thermal energy storage (TES) systems power to hydrogen (P2H) and hydrogen to power (H2P) technologies in hydrogen storage systems (HSS) and electric vehicles (EVs) in dynamic ESS. Further demand response program (DRP) for electrical and thermal loads has been considered as a tool of VESS due to the similar behavior of physical ESS. In the market three participants have considered such as electrical thermal and hydrogen markets. In addition the price uncertainties were calculated by means of scenarios as in stochastic programming while the optimization process and the operational constraints were considered to calculate the operational costs in different ESSs. However congestion in the power systems is often occurred due to the extreme load increments. Hence this study proposes a bi-level formulation system where independent system operators (ISO) manage the congestion in the upper level while VESS operators deal with the financial goals in the lower level. Moreover four case studies have considered to observe the effectiveness of each storage system and the simulation was modeled in the IEEE 33-bus system with CPLEX in GAMS.
On the Possibility to Simulate the Operation of a SI Engine using Alternative Gaseous Fuels

A thermodynamic combustion model developed in AVL BOOST software was used in order to evaluate the pollutant emissions performance and efficiency parameters of a spark ignition engine Renault K7M-710 fueled with compressed natural gas hydrogen and blends of compressed natural gas and hydrogen (hythane). Multiple research studies have concluded that for the near future hythane could be the most promising alternative fuel because it has the advantages of both its components. In our previous work the model was validated for the performance and efficiency parameters by comparison of simulation results with experimental data acquired when the engine was fueled with gasoline. In this work the model was improved and can predict the values of pollutant emissions when the engine is running with the studied alternative fuels. As the percentage of hydrogen in hythane is increased the power of the engine rises the brake specific fuel consumption carbon dioxide carbon monoxide and total unburned hydrocarbon emissions decrease while nitrogen oxides increase. The values of peak fire pressure maximum pressure derivative and peak fire temperature in cycle are higher leading to an increased probability of knock occurrence. To avoid this phenomenon an optimum correlation between the natural gas-hydrogen blend the air-fuel ratio the spark advance and the engine operating condition needs to be found.
A Multi-objective Optimization Approach in Defining the Decarbonization Strategy of a Refinery

Nowadays nearly one quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions are attributable to energy use in industry making this an important target for emission reductions. The scope of this study is hence that to define a cost-optimized decarbonization strategy for an energy and carbon intensive industry using an Italian refinery as a case study. The methodology involves the coupling of EnergyPLAN with a Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) considering the minimization of annual cost and CO2 emissions as two potentially conflicting objectives and the energy technologies’ capacities as decision variables. For the target year 2025 EnergyPLAN+MOEA has allowed to model a range of 0-100 % decarbonization solutions characterized by optimal penetration mix of 22 technologies in the electrical thermal hydrogen feedstock and transport demand. A set of nine scenarios with different land use availabilities and implementable technologies each consisting of 100 optimal systems out of 10000 simulated ones has been evaluated. The results show on the one hand the possibility of achieving medium-high decarbonization solutions at costs close to current ones on the other how the decarbonization pathways strongly depend on the available land for solar thermal photovoltaic and wind as well as the presence of a biomass supply chain in the region.
How Green is Blue Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is often viewed as an important energy carrier in a future decarbonized world. Currently most hydrogen is produced by steam reforming of methane in natural gas (“gray hydrogen”) with high carbon dioxide emissions. Increasingly many propose using carbon capture and storage to reduce these emissions producing so-called “blue hydrogen” frequently promoted as low emissions. We undertake the first effort in a peer-reviewed paper to examine the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of blue hydrogen accounting for emissions of both carbon dioxide and unburned fugitive methane. Far from being low carbon greenhouse gas emissions from the production of blue hydrogen are quite high particularly due to the release of fugitive methane. For our default assumptions (3.5% emission rate of methane from natural gas and a 20-year global warming potential) total carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for blue hydrogen are only 9%-12% less than for gray hydrogen. While carbon dioxide emissions are lower fugitive methane emissions for blue hydrogen are higher than for gray hydrogen because of an increased use of natural gas to power the carbon capture. Perhaps surprisingly the greenhouse gas footprint of blue hydrogen is more than 20% greater than burning natural gas or coal for heat and some 60% greater than burning diesel oil for heat again with our default assumptions. In a sensitivity analysis in which the methane emission rate from natural gas is reduced to a low value of 1.54% greenhouse gas emissions from blue hydrogen are still greater than from simply burning natural gas and are only 18%-25% less than for gray hydrogen. Our analysis assumes that captured carbon dioxide can be stored indefinitely an optimistic and unproven assumption. Computational Investigation of Combustion, Performance, and Emissions of a Diesel-Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Engine

This paper aims to expose the effect of hydrogen on the combustion performance and emissions of a high-speed diesel engine. For this purpose a three-dimensional dynamic simulation model was developed using a reasonable turbulence model and a simplified reaction kinetic mechanism was chosen based on experimental data. The results show that in the hydrogen enrichment conditions hydrogen causes complete combustion of diesel fuel and results in a 17.7% increase in work capacity. However the increase in combustion temperature resulted in higher NOx emissions. In the hydrogen substitution condition the combustion phases are significantly earlier with the increased hydrogen substitution ratio () which is not conducive to power output. However when the is 30% the CO soot and THC reach near-zero emissions. The effect of the injection timing is also studied at an HSR of 90%. When delayed by 10° IMEP improves by 3.4% compared with diesel mode and 2.4% compared with dual-fuel mode. The NOx is reduced by 53% compared with the original dual-fuel mode. This study provides theoretical guidance for the application of hydrogen in rail transportation.
Statistics, Lessons Learnt and Recommendations from the Analysis of the Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD 2.0)

The Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD) is an international open communication platform collecting systematic data on hydrogen-related undesired incidents which was initially developed in the frame of HySafe an EC co-funded Network of Excellence in the 6th Frame Work Programme by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (EC-JRC). It was updated by JRC as HIAD 2.01 in 2016 with the support of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU). Since the launch of the European Hydrogen Safety Panel2 (EHSP) initiative in 2017 by FCH 2 JU the EHSP has worked closely with JRC to upload additional/new incidents to HIAD 2.0 and analyze them to gather statistics lessons learnt and recommendations through Task Force 3. The first report to summarise the findings of the analysis was published by FCH 2 JU in September 2019. Since the publication of the first report the EHSP and JRC have continuously worked together to enlarge HIAD 2.0 by adding newly occurred incidents as well as quality historic incidents which were not previously uploaded to HIAD 2.0. This has facilitated the number of validated incidents in HIAD 2.0 to increase from 272 in 2018 to 593 in March 2021. This number is also dynamic and continues to increase as new incidents are being continuously added by both EHSP and JRC; and validated by JRC. The overall quality of the published incidents has also been improved whenever possible. For example additional information has been added to some existing incidents. Since mid-2020 EHSP Task Force TF3 has further analysed the 485 events which were in the database as of July 2020. For completeness of the statistics these include the events considered in our first report3 as well as the newly added/validated events since then. In this process the EHSP has also re-visited the lessons learnt in the first report to harmonise the approaches of analysis and improve the overall analysis. The analysis has comprehensively covered statistics lessons learnt and recommendations. The increased number of incidents has also made it viable to extract statistics from the available incidents at the time of the analysis including previously available incidents. It should be noted that some incidents reported is of low quality therefore it was not included in the statistical analysis.
Hydrogen as a Long-Term Large-Scale Energy Storage Solution to Support Renewables

This paper presents a case study of using hydrogen for large-scale long-term storage application to support the current electricity generation mix of South Australia state in Australia which primarily includes gas wind and solar. For this purpose two cases of battery energy storage and hybrid battery-hydrogen storage systems to support solar and wind energy inputs were compared from a techno-economical point of view. Hybrid battery-hydrogen storage system was found to be more cost competitive with unit cost of electricity at $0.626/kWh (US dollar) compared to battery-only energy storage systems with a $2.68/kWh unit cost of electricity. This research also found that the excess stored hydrogen can be further utilised to generate extra electricity. Further utilisation of generated electricity can be incorporated to meet the load demand by either decreasing the base load supply from gas in the present scenario or exporting it to neighbouring states to enhance economic viability of the system. The use of excess stored hydrogen to generate extra electricity further reduced the cost to $0.494/kWh.
Techno-economic Evaluation on a Hybrid Technology for Low Hydrogen Concentration Separation and Purification from Natural Gas Grid

Hydrogen can be stored and distributed by injecting into existing natural grids then at the user site separated and used in different applications. The conventional technology for hydrogen separation is pressure swing adsorption (PSA). The recent NREL study showed the extraction cost for separating hydrogen from a 10% H2 stream with a recovery of 80% is around 3.3e8.3 US$/kg. In this document new system configurations for low hydrogen concentration separation from the natural gas grid by combining novel membrane-based hybrid technologies will be described in detail. The focus of the manuscript will be on the description of different configurations for the direct hydrogen separation which comprises a membrane module a vacuum pump and an electrochemical hydrogen compressor. These technological combinations bring substantial synergy effect of one another while improving the total hydrogen recovery purity and total cost of hydrogen. Simulation has been carried out for 17 different configurations; according to the results a configuration of two-stage membrane modules (in series) with a vacuum pump and an electrochemical hydrogen compressor (EHC) shows highest hydrogen purity (99.9997%) for 25 kg/day of hydrogen production for low-pressure grid. However this configuration shows a higher electric consumption (configuration B) due to the additional mechanical compressor between the two-stage membrane modules and the EHC. Whereas when the compressor is excluded and a double skin Pd membrane (PdDS) module is used in a single stage while connected to a vacuum pump (configuration A5) the hydrogen purity (99.92%) slightly decreases yet the power consumption considerably improves (1.53 times lower). Besides to these two complementary configurations the combination of a single membrane module a vacuum pump and the electrochemical compressor has been also carried out (configuration A) and results show that relatively higher purity can be achieved. Based on four master configurations this document presents a different novel hybrid system by integrating two to three technologies for hydrogen purification combined in a way that enhances the strengths of each of them.
Introducing Power-to-H3: Combining Renewable Electricity with Heat, Water and Hydrogen Production and Storage in a Neighbourhood

In the transition from fossil to renewable energy the energy system should become clean while remaining reliable and affordable. Because of the intermittent nature of both renewable energy production and energy demand an integrated system approach is required that includes energy conversion and storage. We propose a concept for a neighbourhood where locally produced renewable energy is partly converted and stored in the form of heat and hydrogen accompanied by rainwater collection storage purification and use (Power-to-H3). A model is developed to create an energy balance and perform a techno-economic analysis including an analysis of the avoided costs within the concept. The results show that a solar park of 8.7 MWp combined with rainwater collection and solar panels on roofs can supply 900 houses over the year with heat (20 TJ) via an underground heat storage system as well as with almost half of their water demand (36000m3) and 540 hydrogen electric vehicles can be supplied with hydrogen (90 tonnes). The production costs for both hydrogen (8.7 €/kg) and heat (26 €/GJ) are below the current end user selling price in the Netherlands (10 €/kg and 34 €/GJ) making the system affordable. When taking avoided costs into account the prices could decrease with 20–26% while at the same time avoiding 3600 tonnes of CO2 a year. These results make clear that it is possible to provide a neighbourhood with all these different utilities completely based on solar power and rainwater in a reliable affordable and clean way.
NewGasMet - Flow Metering of Renewable Gases (Biogas, Biomethane, Hydrogen, Syngas and Mixtures with Natural Gas): Report on the Impact of Renewable Gases, and Mixtures with Natural Gas, on the Accuracy, Cost and Lifetime of Gas Meters

For the usage of domestic gas meters with combustible gases like hydrogen natural gas or mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas in public grids the metrological behaviour of the gas meters has to fulfil the requirements described in the Measuring Instrument Directive (MID). The MID requires also that a measuring instrument shall be suitable for the application. The tightness of a meter is required in order to obtain correct results in case of accuracy tests but also for an application in the grid or for durability tests to avoid risks such as explosive gas mixtures. Due to the different properties of renewable gases leak tightness to one gas mixtures does not necessarily imply leak tightness for other gases. Hydrogen molecules are smaller than those in conventional natural gas which can more easily result in a gas leakage. The EMPIR project NEWGASMET includes beside metrological investigations also a durability test with hydrogen. In order to carry out these activities but also for further hydrogen leakage investigations for instance the investigation of proper seal materials used in the gas meter installation a reliable gas tightness test was developed.
Oxygen Carriers for Chemical-looping Water Splitting to Hydrogen Production: A Critical Review

Chemical looping water splitting (CLWS) process using metal oxides or perovskites as oxygen carriers (OCs) is capable of producing pure H2 in an efficient simple and flexible way. The OCs are first reduced by hydrocarbon fuels and then oxidized by steam in a cyclic way. After the condensation of the gaseous mixture of steam and H2 from the oxidation step pure H2 is obtained. In recent years great efforts for CLWS have been made to improve the redox activity and stability of OCs. In this paper the development of the OCs for hydrogen production from CLWS were discussed. Effects of supports and additives on the performances of OCs were compared based on redox reactions in CLWS. Fe-based OCs with CeO2 Al2O3 ZrO2 CuO MoO3 Rh etc. are very attractive for the CLWS process. Issues and challenges for the development of OCs were analyzed.
Life Cycle Assessment of Improved High Pressure Alkaline Electrolysis

This paper investigates environmental impacts of high pressure alkaline water electrolysis systems. An advanced system with membranes on polymer basis is compared to a state-of-the-art system with asbestos membranes using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. For the advanced system a new improved membrane technology has been investigated within the EU research project “ELYGRID”. Results indicate that most environmental impacts are caused by the electricity supply necessary for operation. During the construction phase cell stacks are the main contributor to environmental impacts. New improved membranes have relatively small contributions to impacts caused by cell construction within the advanced systems. As main outcome the systems comparison illustrates a better ecological performance of the new developed system
Experiment and Numerical Study of the Combustion Behavior of Hydrogen-blended Natural Gas in Swirl Burners

Hydrogen production from renewable energy is gaining increasing attention to enhance energy consumption structure and foster a more eco-friendly and sustainable society. At the same time mixing hydrogen with natural gas and supplying it to civilians is one of the best ways to reduce carbon emissions and increase the reliability of technology while reducing the costs of storing and transporting hydrogen. Even though numerous researchers have conducted experimental and simulation studies on hydrogen-doped natural gas most of these studies have focused on the effects of hydrogen-doped ratio equivalence ratio and fuel combustion mode. The impact of burner structure on hydrogen-enriched natural gas has not received much attention. Compared with conventional direct-flow combustion swirl combustion can improve the mixing effect of the fuel mixture during combustion and the use of regions of reversed flow due to swirl can make the fuel burn more fully to achieve the reduction of pollutant emissions. Swirling flames are widely used in gas turbines and industrial furnaces because of their high stability. However the application of swirl combustion in domestic equipment is still in its infancy which deserves more researchers to explore and enhance the working conditions of domestic combustion equipment. In this paper a three-dimensional swirl burner model is utilized to examine the effect of swirl angle θ and swirl length L of the swirler on the combustion behavior of hydrogen-enriched natural gas in a swirl burner. The results indicate that the swirl angle θ and swirl length L play an essential role in the combustion of natural gas containing hydrogen. As the swirl angle θ increases the flame temperature decreases more slowly the combustion becomes more stable and the length of the flame is slightly increased. Simultaneously CO and NO emissions will gradually decrease and the combustion effect is enhanced when the swirl angle is 45◦. With increased swirl length L the flame length grows the high-temperature region expands and CO and NO emissions decrease. Meanwhile the change in swirl length has little effect on the increase of flame peak temperature when the fuel is thoroughly mixed. When the swirl length is 12 mm CO and NO emissions are lower and NO emissions are reduced by 36.11% compared to a swirl length of 6 mm. This work is a reference point for applying hydrogen-mixed natural gas in the swirl burner but it must be studied and optimized further in future research.
Stand-off Detection of Hydrogen Concentration

The ability to remotely monitor hydrogen and map its concentration is a pressing challenge in large scale production and distribution as well as other sectors such as nuclear storage. We present a photonicsbased approach for the stand-off sensing and mapping of hydrogen concentration capable of detecting and locating <0.1% concentrations at 100m distance. The technique identifies the wavelength of light resulting from interaction with laser pulses via Raman scattering and can identify a range of other gas species e.g. hydrocarbons ammonia by the spectroscopic analysis of the wavelengths present in the return signal. LIDAR Light Detection and Ranging – analogous to Radar is used for ranging. Laserbased techniques for the stand-off detection of hydrocarbons frequently employ absorption of light at specific wavelengths which are characteristic of the gas species. Unfortunately Hydrogen does not exhibit strong absorption however it does exhibit strong Raman scattering when excited in the UV wavelength range. Raman scattering is a comparatively weak effect. However the use of solid-state detectors capable of detecting single photons known as SPADS (Single Photon Avalanche Photodiode) enables the detection of low concentrations at range while making use of precise time-of-flight range location correlation. The initial safety case which necessitated our development of stand-off hydrogen sensing was the condition monitoring of stored nuclear waste supported and funded by Sellafield and the National Nuclear Laboratory in the UK. A deployable version of the device has been developed and hydrogen characterisation has been carried out in an active nuclear store. Prior to deployment a full ignition risk assessment was carried out. To the best of our knowledge this technique is the strongest candidate for the remote stand-off sensing of hydrogen.
Greenhouse Gas Implications of Extending the Service Life of PEM Fuel Cells for Automotive Applications: A Life Cycle Assessment

A larger adoption of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is typically included in the strategies to decarbonize the transportation sector. This inclusion is supported by life-cycle assessments (LCAs) which show the potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission benefit of replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with their fuel cell counterpart. However the literature review performed in this study shows that the effects of durability and performance losses of fuel cells on the life-cycle environmental impact of the vehicle have rarely been assessed. Most of the LCAs assume a constant fuel consumption (ranging from 0.58 to 1.15 kgH2/100 km) for the vehicles throughout their service life which ranges in the assessments from 120000 to 225000 km. In this study the effect of performance losses on the life-cycle GHG emissions of the vehicles was assessed based on laboratory experiments. Losses have the effect of increasing the life-cycle GHG emissions of the vehicle up to 13%. Moreover this study attempted for the first time to investigate via laboratory analyses the GHG implications of replacing the hydrophobic polymer for the gas diffusion medium (GDM) of fuel cells to increase their durability. LCA showed that when the service life of the vehicle was fixed at 150000 km the GHG emission savings of using an FC with lower performance losses (i.e. FC coated with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) instead of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) are negligible compared to the overall life-cycle impact of the vehicle. Both the GDM coating and the amount of hydrogen saved account for less than 2% of the GHG emissions arising during vehicle operation. On the other hand when the service life of the vehicle depends on the operability of the fuel cell the global warming potential per driven km of the FEP-based FCEV reduces by 7 to 32%. The range of results depends on several variables such as the GHG emissions from hydrogen production and the initial fuel consumption of the vehicle. Higher GHG savings are expected from an FC vehicle with high consumption of hydrogen produced with fossil fuels. Based on the results we recommend the inclusion of fuel-cell durability in future LCAs of FCEVs. We also advocate for more research on the real-life performance of fuel cells employing alternative materials.
Site-Dependent Environmental Impacts of Industrial Hydrogen Production by Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Industrial hydrogen production via alkaline water electrolysis (AEL) is a mature hydrogen production method. One argument in favor of AEL when supplied with renewable energy is its environmental superiority against conventional fossil-based hydrogen production. However today electricity from the national grid is widely utilized for industrial applications of AEL. Also the ban on asbestos membranes led to a change in performance patterns making a detailed assessment necessary. This study presents a comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using the GaBi software (version 6.115 thinkstep Leinfelden-Echterdingen Germany) revealing inventory data and environmental impacts for industrial hydrogen production by latest AELs (6 MW Zirfon membranes) in three different countries (Austria Germany and Spain) with corresponding grid mixes. The results confirm the dependence of most environmental effects from the operation phase and specifically the site-dependent electricity mix. Construction of system components and the replacement of cell stacks make a minor contribution. At present considering the three countries AEL can be operated in the most environmentally friendly fashion in Austria. Energy-Efficient Distributed Carbon Capture in Hydrogen Production from Natural Gas

Lowering the energy penalty associated with CO2 capture is one of the key issues of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. The efficiency of carbon capture must be improved to reduce the energy penalty because capture stage is the most energy-consuming stage in the entire process of CCS. Energy-efficient distributed carbon capture in hydrogen production has been demonstrated with an advanced membrane reformer system. We have already developed and operated an advanced 40 Nm3 /h-class membrane reformer system and demonstrated its high hydrogen production efficiency of 81.4% (HHV) which is the world highest efficiency in terms of hydrogen production from natural gas. The system has another significant feature that the CO2 concentration in the reactor off-gas is as high as 70~90% and CO2 can be liquefied and separated easily with little energy loss. An apparatus for CO2 capture was combined to the membrane reformer system and over 90% of CO2 in the reactor off-gas was captured by cryogenic separation. The total energy efficiency of hydrogen production even with CO2 capture was still as high as 78.6% (HHV) which is 510% higher than the conventional reforming technologies. The total CO2 emission from hydrogen production was decreased by 50% with only a 3% energy loss. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out to evaluate the effects of the operating conditions of the system on hydrogen production efficiency and CO2 reduction rate.
Control Strategy Assessment for Improving PEM Fuel Cell System Efficiency in Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles

Concerns about climate change air pollution and the depletion of oil resources have prompted authorities to enforce increasingly strict rules in the automotive sector. There are several benefits to implementing fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHV) in the transportation sector including the ability to assist in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen as energy carriers. This paper examines different control strategies for optimizing the power split between the battery and PEM fuel cell in order to maximize the PEM fuel cell system efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. First the vehicle and fuel cell system models are described. A forward approach is considered to model the vehicle dynamics while a semi-empirical and quasi-static model is used for the PEM fuel cell. Then different rule-based control strategies are analyzed with the aim of maximizing fuel cell system efficiency while ensuring a constant battery state of charge (SOC). The different methods are evaluated while the FCHV is performing both low-load and high-load drive cycles. The hydrogen consumption and the overall fuel cell system efficiency are considered for all testing conditions. The results highlight that in both low-load cycles and high-load cycles the best control strategies achieve a fuel cell system efficiency equal or greater to 33% while achieving a fuel consumption 30% less with respect to the baseline control strategy in low-load drive cycles.

Sensing Hydrogen Seeps in the Subsurface for Natural Hydrogen Exploration

The recent detection of natural hydrogen seeps in sedimentary basin settings has triggered significant interest in the exploration of this promising resource. If large economical resources exist and can be extracted from the sub-surface this would provide an opportunity for natural hydrogen to contribute to the non-carbon-based energy mix. The detection and exploration of hydrogen gas in the sub-surface is a significant challenge that requires costly drilling sophisticated instrumentation and reliable analytical/sampling methods. Here we propose the application of a commercial-based sensor that can be used to detect and monitor low levels of hydrogen gas emissions from geological environments. The sensitivity selectivity (K > 1000) and stability (<1 ppm/day) of the sensor was evaluated under various conditions to determine its suitability for geological field monitoring. Calibration tests showed that the hydrogen readings from the sensor were within ±20% of the expected values. We propose that chemical sensing is a simple and feasible method for understanding natural hydrogen seeps that emanate from geological systems and formations. However we recommend using this sensor as part of a complete geological survey that incorporates an understanding of the geology along with complementary techniques that provide information on the rock properties.

Future Hydrogen Markets for Transportation and Industry: The Impact of CO2 Taxes

The technological lock-in of the transportation and industrial sector can be largely attributed to the limited availability of alternative fuel infrastructures. Herein a countrywide supply chain analysis of Germany spanning until 2050 is applied to investigate promising infrastructure development pathways and associated hydrogen distribution costs for each analyzed hydrogen market. Analyzed supply chain pathways include seasonal storage to balance fluctuating renewable power generation with necessary purification as well as trailer- and pipeline-based hydrogen delivery. The analysis encompasses green hydrogen feedstock in the chemical industry and fuel cell-based mobility applications such as local buses non-electrified regional trains material handling vehicles and trucks as well as passenger cars. Our results indicate that the utilization of low-cost long-term storage and improved refueling station utilization have the highest impact during the market introduction phase. We find that public transport and captive fleets offer a cost-efficient countrywide renewable hydrogen supply roll-out option. Furthermore we show that at comparable effective carbon tax resulting from the current energy tax rates in Germany hydrogen is cost-competitive in the transportation sector by the year 2025. Moreover we show that sector-specific CO2 taxes are required to provide a cost-competitive green hydrogen supply in both the transportation and industrial sectors.
French Guide to Conformity Assessment and Certification of Hydrogen Systems

Hydrogen as energy carrier is referenced in French and European political strategies to realize the transition to low-carbon energy. In 2020 in France the government was launching a major investment plan amounting to 7.2 billion euros until 2030 to support the deployment of large-scale hydrogen technologies [1]. The implementation of this strategy should lead to the arrival of several new hydrogen systems that will need to be evaluated and certified regarding their compliance with safety requirements before being commercialized. Conformity assessment and certification play an important role to achieve a good safety level on the EU market for the protection of workers and consumers. It is a way for the manufacturer to prove that hazards have been identified and risks are managed and to demonstrate his commitment to safety that are key to access to the EU market. To assist manufacturers in identifying the applicable regulations standards and procedures for putting their product on the market Ineris elaborated a guidebook [2] with financial and technical support by ADEME the French Agency for Ecological Transition and France Hydrogen the French Association for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells. The preparation of this document also led to identifying gaps in the Regulations Codes and Standards (RCS) framework and necessary resources for the implementation of the conformity assessment procedures. This paper first describes the main regulatory procedures applicable for various types of hydrogen systems. Then describes the role of the actors involved in this process with a special focus on the French context. And finally focuses on some of the gaps that were identified and formulates suggestions to address them.
Simulation of Coupled Power and Gas Systems with Hydrogen-Enriched Natural Gas

Due to the increasing share of renewable energy sources in the electrical network the focus on decarbonization has extended into other energy sectors. The gas sector is of special interest because it can offer seasonal storage capacity and additional flexibility to the electricity sector. In this paper we present a new simulation method designed for hydrogen-enriched natural gas network simulation. It can handle different gas compositions and is thus able to accurately analyze the impact of hydrogen injections into natural gas pipelines. After describing the newly defined simulation method we demonstrate how the simulation tool can be used to analyze a hydrogen-enriched gas pipeline network. An exemplary co-simulation of coupled power and gas networks shows that hydrogen injections are severely constrained by the gas pipeline network highlighting the importance and necessity of considering different gas compositions in the simulation.

Transient Reversible Solid Oxide Cell Reactor Operation – Experimentally Validated Modeling and Analysis

A reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC) reactor can operate efficiently in both electrolysis mode and in fuel cell mode. The bidirectional operability enables rSOC reactors to play a central role as an efficient energy conversion system for energy storage and sector coupling for a renewable energy driven society. A combined system for electrolysis and fuel cell operation can result in complex system configurations that should be able to switch between the two modes as quickly as possible. This can lead to temperature profiles within the reactor that can potentially lead to the failure of the reactor and eventually the system. Hence the behavior of the reactor during the mode switch should be analyzed and optimal transition strategies should be taken into account during the process system design stage. In this paper a one dimensional transient reversible solid oxide cell model was built and experimentally validated using a commercially available reactor. A simple hydrogen based system model was built employing the validated reactor model to study reactor behavior during the mode switch. The simple design leads to a system efficiency of 49% in fuel cell operation and 87% in electrolysis operation where the electrolysis process is slightly endothermic. Three transient operation strategies were studied. It is shown that the voltage response to transient operation is very fast provided the reactant flows are changed equally fast. A possible solution to ensure a safe mode switch by controlling the reactant inlet temperatures is presented. By keeping the rate of change of reactant inlet temperatures five to ten times slower than the mode switch a safe transition can be ensured.
Thermodynamic and Ecological Preselection of Synthetic Fuel Intermediates from Biogas at Farm Sites

Background: Synthetic fuels based on renewable hydrogen and CO2 are a currently highly discussed piece of the puzzle to defossilize the transport sector. In this regard CO2 can play a positive role in shaping a sustainable future. Large potentials are available as a product of biogas production however occurring in small scales and in thin spatial distributions. This work aims to evaluate suitable synthetic fuel products to be produced at farm sites.<br/>Methods: A thermodynamic analysis to assess the energetic efficiency of synthesis pathways and a qualitative assessment of product handling issues is carried out.<br/>Results: Regarding the technical and safety-related advantages in storage liquid products are the superior option for fuel production at decentralized sites. Due to the economy of scale multi-stage synthesis processes lose economic performance with rising complexity. A method was shown which covers a principle sketch of all necessary reaction separation steps and all compression and heat exchanger units. The figures showed that methanol and butanol are the most suitable candidates in contrast to OME3-5 for implementation in existing transportation and fuel systems. These results were underpin by a Gibbs energy analysis.<br/>Conclusions: As long as safety regulations are met and the farm can guarantee safe storage and transport farm-site production for all intermediates can be realized technically. Ultimately this work points out that the process must be kept as simple as possible favoring methanol production at farm site and its further processing to more complicated fuels in large units for several fuel pathways.

How Long Will Combustion Vehicles Be Used? Polish Transport Sector on the Pathway to Climate Neutrality

Transformation of road transport sector through replacing of internal combustion vehicles with zero-emission technologies is among key challenges to achievement of climate neutrality by 2050. In a constantly developing economy the demand for transport services increases to ensure continuity in the supply chain and passenger mobility. Deployment of electric technologies in the road transport sector involves both businesses and households its pace depends on the technological development of zero-emission vehicles presence of necessary infrastructure and regulations on emission standards for new vehicles entering the market. Thus this study attempts to estimate how long combustion vehicles will be in use and what the state of the fleet will be in 2050. For obtainment of results the TR3E partial equilibrium model was used. The study simulates the future fleet structure in passenger and freight transport. The results obtained for Poland for the climate neutrality (NEU) scenario show that in 2050 the share of vehicles using fossil fuels will be ca. 30% in both road passenger and freight transport. The consequence of shifts in the structure of the fleet is the reduction of CO2 emissions ca. 80% by 2050 and increase of the transport demand for electricity and hydrogen.

The webinar started with a poll to get a sense of which sectors attendees saw hydrogen playing a key role in 2040 - 77% chose industrial processes 54% mobility and 31% power generation. The questions ranged from the opportunities and limitations of blending hydrogen with natural gas to safety concerns surrounding hydrogen.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS:
How much hydrogen can be blended with natural gas depends on the rules and regulation of each country. The general consensus is that blending 10% by volume of hydrogen presents no safety concerns or specific difficulties. This would provide an opportunity to develop low hydrogen markets. Nevertheless blending should not be the end destination. It is not sufficient to meet carbon abatement targets.
Low carbon ammonia has a role to play in the new hydrogen economy. It is a proven and understood technology which is easier to move around the world and could be used directly as ammonia or cracked back into hydrogen.
One of the main focus today should be to replace grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in existing supply chains as there would be no efficiency losses in the process.
In China the push for hydrogen is transport-related. This is driven by air quality and energy independence concerns. In the next 10 years the full life cost of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is expected to be lower than for internal combustion engines. This is due to the fact that FCEVs require less maintenance and that the residual value in the fuel cells is relatively high. At the end of life 95% of the platinum in fuel cells can be repurposed.
FCEVs should not be regarded as competing with battery electric vehicles they sit next to each other on product maps. FCEVs can benefit from the all of the advances in electric drive train systems and electric motors.

Effect of Bipolar Plate Material on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Performance

Commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells can only materials provided its performance is closely related to existing technologies useful in commercial application. Other critical parameters like the utilization of cheaper materials should be taken into account during the manufacturing of the cell. A key component in the cell that has direct correlation to the cell perfor‐ mance is the flow plate. The weight coupled with cost of the cell revolves around the flow plate used in the manufacturing of the cell. This study explores materials ideal for the manufacturing of fuel cells in order to improve the overall cell performance. The investigation highlights the critical impact of varying materials used in the manufacturing of flow plates for PEM fuel cells. Stainless steel (SS) aluminium (Al) and copper (Cu) were the materials considered. The flow plate designs considered were serpentine and open pore cellular foam channel. Machine learning using python for the validation of the results with Linear regression Ridge regression and Polynomial regression algorithm was carried out. The performance of both flow field channels was compared using dif‐ ferent bipolar plate materials. The results show that metal foam flow channels overall performance was better than serpentine flow channels with all the various bipolar plate material used and Al material outperformed Cu and SS material. There is a direct correlation in terms of the outcome of the study and literature based on the data generated experimentally. It can however be concluded that molecules of hydrogen are stable on aluminium plates compared to copper and stainless steel
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Energy Flow Analysis in Real Driving Conditions (RDC)

The search for fossil fuels substitutes forces the use of new propulsion technologies applied to means of transportation. Already widespread hybrid vehicles are beginning to share the market with hydrogen-powered propulsion systems. These systems are fuel cells or internal combustion engines powered by hydrogen fuel. In this context road tests of a hydrogen fuel cell drive were conducted under typical traffic conditions according to the requirements of the RDE test. As a result of the carried-out work energy flow conditions were presented for three driving phases (urban rural and motorway). The different contributions to the vehicle propulsion of the hydrogen system and the electric system in each phase of the driving route are indicated. The characteristic interaction of power train components during varying driving conditions was presented. A wide variation in the contribution of the fuel cell and the battery to the vehicle’s propulsion was identified. In urban conditions the share of the fuel cell in the vehicle’s propulsion is more than three times that contributed by the battery suburban—7 times highway—28 times. In the entire test the ratio of FC/BATT use was more than seven while the energy consumption was more than 22 kWh/100 km. The amounts of battery energy used and recovered were found to be very close to each other under RDE test conditions.
