Improvement of Temperature and Humidity Control of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Temperature and humidity are two important interconnected factors in the performance of PEMFCs (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells). The fuel and oxidant humidity and stack temperature in a fuel cell were analyzed in this study. There are many factors that affect the temperature and humidity of the stack. We adopt the fuzzy control method of multi-input and multi-output to control the temperature and humidity of the stack. A model including a driver vehicle transmission motor air feeding electrical network stack hydrogen supply and cooling system was established to study the fuel cell performance. A fuzzy controller is proven to be better in improving the output power of fuel cells. The three control objectives are the fan speed control for regulating temperature the solenoid valve on/off control of the bubble humidifier for humidity variation and the speed of the pump for regulating temperature difference. In addition the results from the PID controller stack model and the fuzzy controller stack model are compared in this research. The fuel cell bench test has been built to validate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy control. The maximum temperature of the stack can be reduced by 5 ◦C with the fuzzy control in this paper so the fuel cell output voltage (power) increases by an average of approximately 5.8%.
Alternative Energy Technologies as a Cultural Endeavor: A Case Study of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Development in Germany

Background: The wider background to this article is the shift in the energy paradigm from fossil energy sources to renewable sources which should occur in the twenty-first century. This transformation requires the development of alternative energy technologies that enable the deployment of renewable energy sources in transportation heating and electricity. Among others hydrogen and fuel cell technologies have the potential to fulfill this requirement and to contribute to a sustainable and emission-free transport and energy system. However whether they will ever reach broad societal acceptance will not only depend on technical issues alone. The aim of our study is to reveal the importance of nontechnical issues. Therefore the article at hand presents a case study of hydrogen and fuel cells in Germany and aims at highlighting the cultural context that affects their development.<br/>Methods: Our results were obtained from a rich pool of data generated in various research projects through more than 30 in-depth interviews direct observations and document analyses.<br/>Results: We found that individual and collective actors developed five specific supportive practices which they deploy in five diverse arenas of meaning in order to attach certain values to hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.<br/>Conclusions: Based on the results we drew more general conclusions and deducted an overall model for the analysis of culture in technological innovations that is outlined at the end of the article. It constitutes our contribution to the interdisciplinary collaboration required for tackling the shift in this energy paradigm.
How Knowledge about or Experience with Hydrogen Fueling Stations Improves Their Public Acceptance

Hydrogen which is expected to be a popular type of next-generation energy is drawing attention as a fuel option for the formation of a low-carbon society. Because hydrogen energy is different in nature from existing energy technologies it is necessary to promote sufficient social recognition and acceptability of the technology for its widespread use. In this study we focused on the effect of initiatives to improve awareness of hydrogen energy technology thereby investigating the acceptability of hydrogen energy to those participating in either several hydrogen energy technology introduction events or professional seminars. According to the survey results participants in the technology introduction events tended to have lower levels of hydrogen and hydrogen energy technology knowledge than did participants in the hydrogen-energy-related seminars but confidence in the technology and acceptability of the installation of hydrogen stations near their own residences tended to be higher. It was suggested that knowledge about hydrogen and technology could lead to improved acceptability through improved levels of trust in the technology. On the other hand social benefits such as those for the environment socioeconomics and energy security have little impact on individual levels of acceptance of new technology.
Hazards Assessment and Technical Actions Due to the Production of Pressured Hydrogen within a Pilot Photovoltaic-electrolyser-fuel Cell Power System for Agricultural Equipment

A pilot power system formed by photovoltaic panels alkaline electrolyser and fuel cell stacks was designed and set up to supply the heating system of an experimental greenhouse. The aim of this paper is to analyse the main safety aspects of this power system connected to the management of the pressured hydrogen such as the explosion limits of the mixture hydrogen-oxygen the extension of the danger zone the protection pressure vessels and the system to make unreactive the plant. The electrolyser unit is the core of this plant and from the safety point of view has been equipped with devices able to highlight the mal-functions before they cause damages. Alarm situations are highlighted and the production process is cut off in safe conditions in the event that the operational parameters have an abnormal deviation from the design values. Also the entire power system has been designed so that any failure to its components does not compromise the workers’ safety even if the risk analysis is in progress because technical operation are being carried out for enhancing the plant functionality making it more suitable to the designed task of supplying electrically the green-house heating system during cold periods. Some experimental data pertinent to the solar radiation and the corresponding hydrogen pro-duction rate are also reported. At present it does not exist a well-established safety reference protocol to design the reliability of these types of power plants and then the assumed safety measures even if related to the achieved pilot installation can represent an original base of reference to set up guidelines for designing the safety of power plants in the future available for agricultural purposes.
Reversible Hydrogenation of AB2-type Zr–Mg–Ni–V Based Hydrogen Storage Alloys

The development of hydrogen energy is hindered by the lack of high-efficiency hydrogen storage materials. To explore new high-capacity hydrogen storage alloys reversible hydrogen storage in AB2-type alloy is realized by using A or B-side elemental substitution. The substitution of small atomic-radius element Zr and Mg on A-side of YNi2 and partial substitution of large atomic-radius element V on B-side of YNi2 alloy was investigated in this study. The obtained ZrMgNi4 ZrMgNi3V and ZrMgNi2V2 alloys remained single Laves phase structure at as-annealed hydrogenated and dehydrogenated states indicating that the hydrogen-induced amorphization and disproportionation was eliminated. From ZrMgNi4 to ZrMgNi2V2 with the increase of the degree of vanadium substitution the reversible hydrogen storage capacity increased from 0.6 wt% (0.35H/M) to 1.8 wt% (1.0H/M) meanwhile the lattice stability gradually increased. The ZrMgNi2V2 alloy could absorb 1.8 wt% hydrogen in about 2 h at 300 K under 4 MPa H2 pressure and reversibly desorb the absorbed hydrogen in approximately 30 min at 473 K without complicated activation process. The prominent properties of ZrMgNi2V22 elucidate its high potential for hydrogen storage application.
Numerical Simulations of Atmospheric Dispersion of Large-scale Liquid Hydrogen Releases

Numerical simulations have been conducted for LH2 massive releases and the subsequent atmospheric dispersion using an in-house modified version of the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM. A conjugate heat transfer model has been added for heat transfer between the released LH2 and the ground. Appropriate interface boundary conditions are applied to ensure the continuities of temperature and heat fluxes. The significant temperature difference between the cryogenic hydrogen and the ground means that the released LH2 will instantly enter in a boiling state resulting in a hydrogen- air gaseous cloud which will initially behave like a dense gas. Numerical predictions have been conducted for the subsequent atmospheric dispersion of the vaporized LH2 for a series of release scenarios - with and without retention pits - to limit the horizontal spread of the LH2 on the ground. The considered cases included the instantaneous release of 1 10 and 50 tons of LH2 under neutral (D) and stable (F) weather conditions. More specifically 3F and 5D conditions were simulated with the former representing stable weather conditions under wind speed of 3 m/s at 10 m above the ground and the later corresponding to neutral weather conditions under 5 m/s wind speed (10 m above the ground). Specific numerical tests have also been conducted for selected scenarios under different ambient temperatures from 233 up to 313 K. According to the current study although the retention pit can extend the dispersion time it can significantly reduce the extent of hazards due to much smaller cloud size within both the flammability and explosion limits. While the former has negative impact on safety the later is beneficial. The use of retention pit should hence be considered with caution in practical applications.
Reliable Off-grid Power Supply Utilizing Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen produced from wind solar or hydro power is a suitable electricity storage medium. Hydrogen is typically employed as mid- to long-term energy storage whereas batteries cover short-term energy storage. Green hydrogen can be produced by any available electrolyser technology [alkaline electrolysis cell (AEC) polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) anion exchange membrane (AEM) solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC)] if the electrolysis is fed by renewable electricity. If the electrolysis operates under elevated pressure the simplest way to store the gaseous hydrogen is to feed it directly into an ordinary pressure vessel without any external compression. The most efficient way to generate electricity from hydrogen is by utilizing a fuel cell. PEM fuel cells seem to be the most favourable way to do so. To increase the capacity factor of fuel cells and electrolysers both functionalities can be integrated into one device by using the same stack. Within this article different reversible technologies as well as their advantages and readiness levels are presented and their potential limitations are also discussed.
SNG Generation via Power to Gas Technology: Plant Design and Annual Performance Assessment

Power to gas (PtG) is an emerging technology that allows to overcome the issues due to the increasingly widespread use of intermittent renewable energy sources (IRES). Via water electrolysis power surplus on the electric grid is converted into hydrogen or into synthetic natural gas (SNG) that can be directly injected in the natural gas network for long-term energy storage. The core units of the Power to synthetic natural gas (PtSNG) plant are the electrolyzer and the methanation reactors where the renewable electrolytic hydrogen is converted to synthetic natural gas by adding carbon dioxide. A technical issue of the PtSNG plant is the different dynamics of the electrolysis unit and the methanation unit. The use of a hydrogen storage system can help to decouple these two subsystems and to manage the methanation unit for assuring long operation time and reducing the number of shutdowns. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the energy storage potential and the technical feasibility of the PtSNG concept to store intermittent renewable sources. Therefore different plant sizes (1 3 and 6 MW) have been defined and investigated by varying the ratio between the renewable electric energy sent to the plant and the total electric energy generated by the renewable energy source (RES) facility based on a 12 MW wind farm. The analysis has been carried out by developing a thermochemical and electrochemical model and a dynamic model. The first allows to predict the plant performance in steady state. The second allows to forecast the annual performance and the operation time of the plant by implementing the control strategy of the storage unit. The annual overall efficiencies are in the range of 42–44% low heating value (LHV basis). The plant load factor i.e. the ratio between the annual chemical energy of the produced SNG and the plant capacity results equal to 60.0% 46.5% and 35.4% for 1 3 and 6 MW PtSNG sizes respectively.
Hydrogen-assisted Fatigue Crack Growth: Pre-charging vs In-situ Testing in Gaseous Environments

We investigate the implications of conducting hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth experiments in a hydrogen gas environment (in-situ hydrogen charging) or in air (following exposure to hydrogen gas). The study is conducted on welded 42CrMo4 steel a primary candidate for the future hydrogen transport infrastructure allowing us to additionally gain insight into the differences in behavior between the base steel and the coarse grain heat affected zone. The results reveal significant differences between the two testing approaches and the two weld regions. The differences are particularly remarkable for the comparison of testing methodologies with fatigue crack growth rates being more than one order of magnitude higher over relevant loading regimes when the samples are tested in a hydrogen-containing environment relative to the pre-charged samples. Aided by finite element modelling and microscopy analysis these differences are discussed and rationalized. Independent of the testing approach the heat affected zone showed a higher susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. Similar microstructural behavior is observed for both testing approaches with the base metal exhibiting martensite lath decohesion while the heat affected zone experienced both martensite lath decohesion and intergranular fracture.
Is Blue Hydrogen a Bridging Technology? - The Limits of a CO2 Price and the Role of State-induced Price Components for Green Hydrogen Production in Germany

The European Commission aims to establish green hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable electricity and in a transition phase hydrogen produced in a low-carbon process or blue hydrogen. In an extensive cost analysis for Germany up to 2050 based on scenario data and a component-based learning rate approach we find that blue hydrogen is likely to establish itself as the most cost-effective option and not only as a medium-term low-carbon alternative. We find that expected CO2 prices below €480/tCO2 have a limited impact on the economic feasibility of electrolysis and show that substantial increases in excise tax on natural gas could lead blue hydrogen to reach a sufficient cost level for electrolysed hydrogen. Unless alternatives for green hydrogen supply through infrastructure and imports become available at lower cost electrolysed hydrogen may require long-term subsidies. As blue hydrogen comprises fugitive methane emissions and financing needs for green hydrogen support have implications for society and competition in the internal market we suggest that policymakers rely on hydrogen for decarbonising only essential energy applications. We recommend further investigations into the cost of hydrogen infrastructure and import options as well as efficient subsidy frameworks.
Energy Innovation Needs Assessment: Heating Cooling

The Energy Innovation Needs Assessment (EINA) aims to identify the key innovation needs across the UK’s energy system to inform the prioritisation of public sector investment in low-carbon innovation. Using an analytical methodology developed by the Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the EINA takes a systemlevel approach and values innovations in a technology in terms of the system-level benefits a technology innovation provides.1. This whole system modelling in line with BEIS’s EINA methodology was delivered by the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) using the Energy System Modelling Environment (ESMETM) as the primary modelling tool.
To support the overall prioritisation of innovation activity the EINA process analyses key technologies in more detail. These technologies are grouped together into sub-themes according to the primary role they fulfil in the energy system. For key technologies within a sub-theme innovations and business opportunities are identified. The main findings at the technology level are summarised in sub-theme reports. An overview report will combine the findings from each sub-theme to provide a broad system-level perspective and prioritisation.
This EINA analysis is based on a combination of desk research by a consortium of economic and engineering consultants and stakeholder engagement. The prioritisation of innovation and business opportunities presented is informed by a workshop organised for each sub-theme assembling key stakeholders from the academic community industry and government.
This report was commissioned prior to advice being received from the CCC on meeting a net zero target and reflects priorities to meet the previous 80% target in 2050. The newly legislated net zero target is not expected to change the set of innovation priorities rather it will make them all more valuable overall. Further work is required to assess detailed implications.

Investigating the Implications of a New-build Hybrid Power System for Roll-on/Roll-off Cargo Ships from a Sustainability Perspective – A Life Cycle Assessment Case Study

Marine transport has been essential for international trade. Concern for its environmental impact was growing among regulators classification societies ship operators ship owners and other stakeholders. By applying life cycle assessment this article aimed to assess the impact of a new-build hybrid system (i.e. an electric power system which incorporated lithium ion batteries photovoltaic systems and cold-ironing) designed for Roll-on/Roll-off cargo ships. The study was carried out based on a bottom-up integrated system approach using the optimised operational profile and background information for manufacturing processes mass breakdown and end of life management plans. Resources such as metallic and non-metallic materials and energy required for manufacture operation maintenance dismantling and scrap handling were estimated. During operation 1.76 x 10^8 kg of marine diesel oil was burned releasing carbon monoxide carbon dioxide particulate matter hydrocarbons nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide which ranged 5–8 orders of magnitude. The operation of diesel gensets was the primary cause of impact categories that were relevant to particulate matter or respiratory inorganic health issues photochemical ozone creation eutrophication acidification global warming and human toxicity. Disposing metallic scrap was accountable for the most significant impact category ecotoxicity potential. The environmental benefits of the hybrid power system in most impact categories were verified in comparison with a conventional power system onboard cargo ships. The estimated results for individual impact categories were verified using scenario analysis. The study concluded that the life cycle of a new-build hybrid power system would result in significant impact on the environment human beings and natural reserves and therefore proper management of such a system was imperative.
Exergy as Criteria for Efficient energy Systems - Maximising Energy Efficiency from Resource to Energy Service, an Austrian Case Study

The EU aims for complete decarbonisation. Therefore renewable generation must be massively expanded and the energy and exergy efficiency of the entire system must be significantly increased. To increase exergy efficiency a holistic consideration of the energy system is necessary. This work analyses the optimal technology mix to maximise exergy efficiency in a fully decarbonised energy system. An exergy-based optimisation model is presented and analysed. It considers both the energy supply system and the final energy application. The optimisation is using Austria as a case study with targeted renewable generation capacities of 2030. The results show that despite this massive expansion and the maximum exergy efficiency about half of the primary energy still be imported. Overall exergy efficiency can be raised from today's 34% (Sejkora et al. 2020) to 56%. The major increase in exergy efficiency is achieved in the areas of heat supply (via complete excess heat utilisation and heat pumps) and transport (via electric and fuel cell drives). The investigated exergy optimisation results in an increase of the final electrical energy demand by 44% compared to the current situation. This increase leads to mainly positive residual loads despite a significant expansion of renewable generation. Negative residual loads are used to provide heat and hydrogen.
Temperature Effect on the Mechanical Properties of Liner Materials used for Type IV Hydrogen Storage Tanks

Type IV hydrogen storage tanks play an important role in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) due to their superiority of lightweight good corrosion and fatigue resistance. It is planned to be used between -40℃ and 85℃ at which the polymer liner may have a degradation of mechanical properties and buckling collapse. This demand a good performance of liner materials in that temperature range. In this article the temperature effect on mechanical properties of polyamide 6 (PA6) liner material including specimens with weld seam was investigated via the stress-strain curve (S-S curve) macroscopic and microscopic morphology. Considering that the mechanical properties will change after the liner molding process this test takes samples directly from the liner. Results show that the tensile strength and tensile modulus increased by 2.46 times and 10.6 times respectively with the decrease of temperature especially in the range from 50℃ to -90℃. For the elongation at break and work of fracture they do not monotonously increase with the temperature up. Both of them reduce when the temperature rises from 20°C to 50°C especially for the work of fracture decreasing by 63%. The weld seam weakens the mechanical properties and the elongation at break and work of fracture are more obvious which are greater than 40% at each temperature. In addition the SEM images indicate that the morphology of fracture surface at -90°C is different from that at other temperatures which is a sufficient evidence of toughness reducing in low temperature.
Linking the Power and Transport Sectors—Part 2: Modelling a Sector Coupling Scenario for Germany

“Linking the power and transport sectors—Part 1” describes the general principle of “sector coupling” (SC) develops a working definition intended of the concept to be of utility to the international scientific community contains a literature review that provides an overview of relevant scientific papers on this topic and conducts a rudimentary analysis of the linking of the power and transport sectors on a worldwide EU and German level. The aim of this follow-on paper is to outline an approach to the modelling of SC. Therefore a study of Germany as a case study was conducted. This study assumes a high share of renewable energy sources (RES) contributing to the grid and significant proportion of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) in the year 2050 along with a dedicated hydrogen pipeline grid to meet hydrogen demand. To construct a model of this nature the model environment “METIS” (models for energy transformation and integration systems) we developed will be described in more detail in this paper. Within this framework a detailed model of the power and transport sector in Germany will be presented in this paper and the rationale behind its assumptions described. Furthermore an intensive result analysis for the power surplus utilization of electrolysis hydrogen pipeline and economic considerations has been conducted to show the potential outcomes of modelling SC. It is hoped that this will serve as a basis for researchers to apply this framework in future to models and analysis with an international focus.
Metallurgical and Hydrogen Effects on the Small Punch Tested Mechanical Properties of PH-13-8Mo Stainless Steel

PH13-8Mo is a precipitation hardened martensitic stainless steel known for its high strength but also for its high sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement. Small punch test SPT (also referred to as the ball punch test BPT) is a relatively simple and new technique to assess the mechanical properties of samples under biaxial loading conditions. The current study utilizes the unique loading conditions of SPT to investigate the mechanical behavior and fracture prior to and after the hydrogen charging of PH13-8Mo steel. The mechanical characteristics were investigated at different metallurgical conditions: solution and quenched (SQ); fully-aged (550 °C for 4 h) and over-aged (600 °C for 4 h). Samples were cathodically hydrogen charged in a 1 M H2SO4 solution containing NaAsO2 (0.125 mg/L) at 50 mA/cm2 for different durations of 0.5 h 2 h and 19 h and compared to the as-heat-treated condition. A fractographic examination was performed following the SPT measurements by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were used as complementary characterization tools. It is shown that upon hydrogen charging the SPT fracture mode changes from ductile to completely brittle with a transition of mixed mode cracking also affecting the SPT load-displacement curve.

A Combined Chemical-Electrochemical Process to Capture CO2 and Produce Hydrogen and Electricity

Several carbon sequestration technologies have been proposed to utilize carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to produce energy and chemical compounds. However feasible technologies have not been adopted due to the low efficiency conversion rate and high-energy requirements. Process intensification increases the process productivity and efficiency by combining chemical reactions and separation operations. In this work we present a model of a chemical-electrochemical cyclical process that can capture carbon dioxide as a bicarbonate salt. The proposed process also produces hydrogen and electrical energy. Carbon capture is enhanced by the reaction at the cathode that displaces the equilibrium into bicarbonate production. Literature data show that the cyclic process can produce stable operation for long times by preserving ionic balance using a suitable ionic membrane that regulates ionic flows between the two half-cells. Numerical simulations have validated the proof of concept. The proposed process could serve as a novel CO2 sequestration technology while producing electrical energy and hydrogen.
Energy Management of Heavy-duty Fuel Cell Vehicles in Real-world Driving Scenarios: Robust Design of Strategies to Maximize the Hydrogen Economy and System Lifetime

Energy management is a critical issue for the advancement of fuel cell vehicles because it significantly influences their hydrogen economy and lifetime. This paper offers a comprehensive investigation of the energy management of heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles for road freight transportation. An important and unique contribution of this study is the development of an extensive and realistic representation of the vehicle operation which includes 1750 hours of real-world driving data and variable truck loading conditions. This framework is used to analyze the potential benefits and drawbacks of heuristic optimal and predictive energy management strategies to maximize the hydrogen economy and system lifetime of fuel cell vehicles for road freight transportation. In particular the statistical evaluation of the effectiveness and robustness of the simulation results proves that it is necessary to consider numerous and realistic driving scenarios to validate energy management strategies and obtain a robust design. This paper shows that the hydrogen economy can be maximized as an individual target using the available driving information achieving a negligible deviation from the theoretical limit. Furthermore this study establishes that heuristic and optimal strategies can significantly reduce fuel cell transients to improve the system lifetime while retaining high hydrogen economies. Finally this investigation reveals the potential benefits of predictive energy management strategies for the multi-objective optimization of the hydrogen economy and system lifetime.
Future Heat Series Part 1 - Pathways for Heat

Together the pathways examined in the report paint a picture of the nationwide transformation getting underway in how we heat our homes and buildings. The report identifies that by 2050 gas used to heat buildings could fall by 75-95% electricity increase from a 10% share today to 30-80% and district heat increase from less than 2% to up to a 40% share. At the same time energy efficiency could help to lower bills and offset the expected growth in our heating needs from an expanding population and building stock. Across most pathways examined in the report mass deployment of low carbon heat solutions ramps up in the lead-in to 2030. Carbon Connect’s overarching recommendation is that the next decade should be spent preparing by developing a robust strategy for decarbonising heat in buildings whilst testing and scaling up delivery models. The report calls for the next Government to prioritise these preparations in the same way that preparing for power sector decarbonisation has been the overriding focus of energy policy in the past decade. The Future Heat Series brings together politicians policy and academic experts and industry leaders. Together this coalition of key figures is taking stock of evidence progressing the policy debate in an open and constructive forum and building consensus for prioritising and transforming heat. Pathways for Heat is the first part of the Future Heat Series and presents six recommendations and over twenty findings.
CFD Analysis of Fast Filling Strategies for Hydrogen Tanks and their Effects on Key-parameters

A major requirement for the filling of hydrogen tanks is the maximum gas temperature within the vessels during the process. Different filling strategies in terms of pressure and temperature of the gas injected into the cylinder and their effects on key parameters like maximum temperature state of charge and energy cooling demand are investigated. It is shown that pre-cooling of the gas is required but is not necessary for the whole duration of the filling. Relevant energy savings can be achieved with pre-cooling over a fraction of the time. The most convenient filling strategy from the cooling energy point of view is identified: with an almost linear pressure rise and pre-cooling in the second half of the process a 60% reduction of the cooling energy demand is achieved compared to the case of pre-cooling for the whole filling.
Thermodynamic Modeling of Hydrogen Refueling for Heavy-duty Fuel Cell Buses and Comparison with Aggregated Real Data

The foreseen uptake of hydrogen mobility is a fundamental step towards the decarbonization of the transport sector. Under such premises both refuelling infrastructure and vehicles should be deployed together with improved refuelling protocols. Several studies focus on refuelling the light-duty vehicles with 10 kgH2 up to 700 bar however less known effort is reported for refuelling heavy-duty vehicles with 30–40 kgH2 at 350 bar. The present study illustrates the application of a lumped model to a fuel cell bus tank-to-tank refuelling event tailored upon the real data acquired in the 3Emotion Project. The evolution of the main refuelling quantities such as pressure temperature and mass flow are predicted dynamically throughout the refuelling process as a function of the operating parameters within the safety limits imposed by SAE J2601/2 technical standard. The results show to refuel the vehicle tank from half to full capacity with an Average Pressure Ramp Rate (APRR) equal to 0.03 MPa/s are needed about 10 min. Furthermore it is found that the effect of varying the initial vehicle tank pressure is more significant than changing the ambient temperature on the refuelling performances. In conclusion the analysis of the effect of different APRR from 0.03 to 0.1 MPa/s indicate that is possible to safely reduce the duration of half-to-full refuelling by 62% increasing the APRR value from 0.03 to 0.08 MPa/s.
Overview of Current Development in Electrical Energy Storage Technologies and the Application Potential in Power System Operation

Electrical power generation is changing dramatically across the world because of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to introduce mixed energy sources. The power network faces great challenges in transmission and distribution to meet demand with unpredictable daily and seasonal variations. Electrical Energy Storage (EES) is recognized as underpinning technologies to have great potential in meeting these challenges whereby energy is stored in a certain state according to the technology used and is converted to electrical energy when needed. However the wide variety of options and complex characteristic matrices make it difficult to appraise a specific EES technology for a particular application. This paper intends to mitigate this problem by providing a comprehensive and clear picture of the state-of-the-art technologies available and where they would be suited for integration into a power generation and distribution system. The paper starts with an overview of the operation principles technical and economic performance features and the current research and development of important EES technologies sorted into six main categories based on the types of energy stored. Following this a comprehensive comparison and an application potential analysis of the reviewed technologies are presented.
In the Green? Perceptions of Hydrogen Production Methods Among the Norwegian Public

This article presents findings from a representative survey fielded through the Norwegian Citizen Panel examining public perceptions of hydrogen fuel and its different production methods. Although several countries including Norway have strategies to increase the production of hydrogen fuel our results indicate that hydrogen as an energy carrier and its different production methods are still unknown to a large part of the public. A common misunderstanding seems to be confusing ‘hydrogen fuel’ in general with environmentally friendly ‘green hydrogen’. Results from a survey experiment (N = 1906) show that production method is important for public acceptance. On a five-point acceptance scale respondents score on average 3.9 for ‘green’ hydrogen which is produced from renewable energy sources. The level of acceptance is significantly lower for ‘blue’ (3.2) and ‘grey’ (2.3) hydrogen when respondents are informed that these are produced from coal oil or natural gas. Public support for hydrogen fuel in general as well as the different production methods is also related to their level of worry about climate change gender and political affiliation. Widespread misunderstandings regarding ‘green’ hydrogen production could potentially fuel public resistance as new ‘blue’ or ‘grey’ projects develop. Our results indicate a need for clearer communication from the government and developers regarding production methods to avoid distrust and potential public backfire.
Evaluation of a Hydrogen Powered Scooter Toy Prototype

Electric scooters are used as alternative ways of transport because they easily make travel faster. However the batteries can take around 5 h to charge and have an autonomy of 30 km. With the presence of the hydrogen cell a hybrid system reduces the charging times and increases the autonomy of the vehicle by using two types of fuel. An increase of up to 80% in maximum distance and of 34% in operating times is obtained with a 1:10 scale prototype with the hydrogen cell; although more energy is withdrawn the combined fuel efficiency increases too. This suggests the cell that is used has the same behavior as some official reported vehicles which have a long range but low power. This allows concluding that use of the cell is functional for load tests and that the comparison factor obtained works as input for real-scale scooter prototypes to compete with the traditional electric scooters.
Recent Advances in Hybrid Water Electrolysis for Energy-saving Hydrogen Production

Electricity-driven water splitting to convert water into hydrogen (H2) has been widely regarded as an efficient approach for H2 production. Nevertheless the energy conversion efficiency of it is greatly limited due to the disadvantage of the sluggish kinetic of oxidation evolution reaction (OER). To effectively address the issue a novel concept of hybrid water electrolysis has been developed for energy– saving H2 production. This strategy aims to replace the sluggish kinetics of OER by utilizing thermodynamically favorable organics oxidation reaction to replace OER. Herein recent advances in such water splitting system for boosting H2 evolution under low cell voltage are systematically summarized. Some notable progress of different organics oxidation reactions coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are discussed in detail. To facilitate the development of hybrid water electrolysis the major challenges and perspectives are also proposed.
Efficiency, Economic and Environmental Impact Assessment of a Newly Developed Rail Engine using Hydrogen and Other Sustainable Fuel Blends

Locomotives still use antiqued engines such as internal combustion engines operated by fossil fuels which cause global warming due to their significant emissions. This paper continues investigating the newly hybridized locomotive engine containing a gas turbine system solid oxide fuel cell system energy saving system and on-board hydrogen production system. This new engine is operated using five fuel blends composed of five alternative fuels such as hydrogen methane methanol ethanol and dimethyl ether. The current investigation involves exergy analysis exergo-economic analysis and exergo-environmental analysis to assess the engine from three perspectives: efficiency/irreversibility cost and environmental impact. The study results show that the net power of this new engine is 4948.6 kW and it has an exergetic efficiency of 62.7% according to the fuel and product principle. This engine weighs about 9 tons and costs about $10.2M with a levelized cost rate of 147 $/h and 14.06 mPt/h of overall component-related environmental rate. The average overall specific fuel and product exergy costs are about 37 $/GJ and 60 $/GJ and the minimum values are 13.3 $/GJ and 21.8 $/GJ using methane and hydrogen blend respectively. Also the average overall specific fuel and product exergo-environmental impact are about 15 and 23 mPt/MJ respectively. The on-board hydrogen production has an average exergy cost of 274 $/GJ and an environmental impact of 52 mPt/MJ. Hydrogen blended with methane or methanol is found to be more economic and has less environmental impact.
Pore-scale Dynamics for Underground Porous Media Hydrogen Storage

Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) has been launched as a catalyst to the low-carbon energy transitions. The limited understanding of the subsurface processes is a major obstacle for rapid and widespread UHS implementation. We use microfluidics to experimentally describe pore-scale multiphase hydrogen flow in an aquifer storage scenario. In a series of drainage-imbibition experiments we report the effect of capillary number on hydrogen saturations displacement/trapping mechanisms dissolution kinetics and contact angle hysteresis. We find that the hydrogen saturation after injection (drainage) increases with increasing capillary number. During hydrogen withdrawal (imbibition) two distinct mechanisms control the displacement and residual trapping – I1 and I2 imbibition mechanisms respectively. Local hydrogen dissolution kinetics show dependency on injection rate and hydrogen cluster size. Dissolved global hydrogen concentration corresponds up to 28 % of reported hydrogen solubility indicating pore-scale non-equilibrium dissolution. Contact angles show hysteresis and vary between 17 and 56°. Our results provide key UHS experimental data to improve understanding of hydrogen multiphase flow behavior.
Hydrogen Storage Assessment in Depleted Oil Reservoir and Saline Aquifer

Hydrogen (H2 ) is an attractive energy carrier to move store and deliver energy in a form that can be easily used. Field proven technology for underground hydrogen storage (UHS) is essential for a successful hydrogen economy. Options for this are manmade caverns salt domes/caverns saline aquifers and depleted oil/gas fields where large quantities of gaseous hydrogen have been stored in caverns for many years. The key requirements intrinsic of a porous rock formation for seasonal storage of hydrogen are: adequate capacity ability to contain H2 capability to inject/extract high volumes of H2 and a reliable caprock to prevent leakage. We have carefully evaluated a commercial non-isothermal compositional gas reservoir simulator and its suitability for hydrogen storage and withdrawal from saline aquifers and depleted oil/gas reservoirs. We have successfully calibrated the gas equation of state model against published laboratory H2 density and viscosity data as a function of pressure and temperature. Comparisons between the H2 natural gas and CO2 storage in real field models were also performed. Our numerical models demonstrated more lateral spread of the H2 when compared to CO2 and natural gas with a need for special containment in H2 projects. It was also observed that the experience with CO2 and natural gas storage cannot be simply replicated with H2 .
Simulation of Turbulent Combustion in a Small-scale Obstructed Chamber Using Flamefoam

Dynamic overpressures achieved during the combustion are related to the acceleration experienced by the propagating flame. In the case of premixed turbulent combustion in an obstructed geometry obstacles in the direction of flow result in a complex flame front interaction with the turbulence generated ahead of it. The interaction of flame front and vortex significantly affect the burning rate the rate of pressure rise and achieved overpressure the geometry of accelerating flame front and resulting structures in the flow field. Laboratory-scale premixed turbulent combustion experiments are convenient for the study of flame acceleration by obstacles in higher resolution. This paper presents numerical simulations of hydrogenair mixture combustion experiments performed in the University of Sydney small-scale combustion chamber. The simulations were performed using flameFoam – an open-source premixed turbulent combustion solver based on OpenFOAM. The experimental and numerical pressure evolutions are compared. Furthermore flow structures which develop due to the interaction between the obstacles and the flow are investigated with different obstacle configurations.
Hydrogen Embrittlement of a Boiler Water Wall Tube in a District Heating System

A district heating system is an eco-friendly power generation facility with high energy efficiency. The boiler water wall tube used in the district heating system is exposed to extremely harsh conditions and unexpected fractures often occur during operation. In this study a corrosion failure analysis of the boiler water wall tube was performed to elucidate the failure mechanisms. The study revealed that overheating by flames was the cause of the failure of the boiler water wall tube. With an increase in temperature in a localized region the microstructure not only changed from ferrite/pearlite to martensite/bainite which made it more susceptible to brittleness but it also developed tensile residual stresses in the water-facing side by generating cavities or microcracks along the grain boundaries inside the tube. High-temperature hydrogen embrittlement combined with stress corrosion cracking initiated many microcracks inside the tube and created an intergranular fracture.
Renewable Hydrogen Supply Chains: A Planning Matrix and an Agenda for Future Research

Worldwide energy systems are experiencing a transition to more sustainable systems. According to the Hydrogen Roadmap Europe (FCH EU 2019) hydrogen will play an important role in future energy systems due to its ability to support sustainability goals and will account for approximately 13% of the total energy mix in the coming future. Correct hydrogen supply chain (HSC) planning is therefore vital to enable a sustainable transition. However due to the operational characteristics of the HSC its planning is complicated. Renewable hydrogen supply can be diverse: Hydrogen can be produced de-centrally with renewables such as wind and solar energy or centrally by using electricity generated from a hydro power plant with a large volume. Similarly demand for hydrogen can also be diverse with many new applications such as fuels for fuel cell electrical vehicles and electricity generation feedstocks in industrial processes and heating for buildings. The HSC consists of various stages (production storage distribution and applications) in different forms with strong interdependencies which further increase HSC complexity. Finally planning of an HSC depends on the status of hydrogen adoption and market development and on how mature technologies are and both factors are characterised by high uncertainties. Directly adapting the traditional approaches of supply chain planning for HSCs is insufficient. Therefore in this study we develop a planning matrix with related planning tasks leveraging a systematic literature review to cope with the characteristics of HSCs. We focus only on renewable hydrogen due to its relevance to the future low-carbon economy. Furthermore we outline an agenda for future research from the supply chain management perspective in order to support HSC development considering the different phases of HSCs adoption and market development.

An Overview on Safety Issues Related to Hydrogen and Methane Blend Applications in Domestic and Industrial Use

The share of electrical energy hailing from renewable sources in the European electricity mix is increasing. The match between renewable power supply and demand has become the greatest challenge to cope with. Gas infrastructure can accommodate large volumes of electricity converted into gas whenever this supply of renewable power is larger than the grid capacity or than the electricity demand. The Power-to-Gas (P2G) process chain could play a significant role in the future energy system. Renewable electric energy can be transformed into storable hydrogen via electrolysis and subsequent methanation. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the required technical adaptations of the most common devices for end users such as heating plants CHP systems home gas furnaces and cooking surfaces wherever these are fuelled with methane and hydrogen blends in variable percentages by volume. Special attention will be given to issues related to essential safety standards firstly comparing existing Italian and European regulations in this regard and secondly highlighting the potential need for legislation to regulate the suitability of hydrogen methane blends. Finally a list of foreseeable technical solutions will be provided and discussed thoroughly
System Dynamic Model for the Accumulation of Renewable Electricity using Power-to-Gas and Power-to-Liquid Concepts

When the renewable energy is used the challenge is match the supply of intermittent energy with the demand for energy therefore the energy storage solutions should be used. This paper is dedicated to hydrogen accumulation from wind sources. The case study investigates the conceptual system that uses intermitted renewable energy resources to produce hydrogen (power-to-gas concept) and fuel (power-to-liquid concept). For this specific case study hydrogen is produced from surplus electricity generated by wind power plant trough electrolysis process and fuel is obtained by upgrading biogas to biomethane using hydrogen. System dynamic model is created for this conceptual system. The developed system dynamics model has been used to simulate 2 different scenarios. The results show that in both scenarios the point at which the all electricity needs of Latvia are covered is obtained. Moreover the methodology of system dynamics used in this paper is white-box model that allows to apply the developed model to other case studies and/or to modify model based on the newest data. The developed model can be used for both scientific research and policy makers to better understand the dynamic relation within the system and the response of system to changes in both internal and external factors.
Optimized Configuration and Operating Plan for Hydrogen Refueling Station with On-Site Electrolytic Production

Hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) are critical for the popularity of hydrogen vehicles (fuel cell electric vehicles—FCEVs). However due to high installation investment and operating costs the proliferation of HRSs is difficult. This paper studies HRSs with on-site electrolytic production and hydrogen storage devices and proposes an optimization method to minimize the total costs including both installation investment and operating costs (OPT-ISL method). Moreover to acquire the optimization constraints of hydrogen demand this paper creatively develops a refueling behavior simulation method for different kinds of FCEVs and proposes a hydrogen-demand estimation model to forecast the demand with hourly intervals for HRS. The Jensen–Shannon divergence is applied to verify the accuracy of the hydrogen-demand estimation. The result: 0.029 is much smaller than that of the estimation method in reference. Based on the estimation results and peak-valley prices of electricity from the grid a daily hydrogen generation plan is obtained as well as the optimal capacities of electrolyzers and storage devices. As for the whole costs compared with previous configuration methods that only consider investment costs or operating costs the proposed OPT-ISL method has the least 8.1 and 10.5% less respectively. Moreover the proposed OPT-ISL method shortens the break-even time for HRS from 11.1 years to 7.8 years a decrease of 29.7% so that the HRS could recover its costs in less time.
New Control Strategy for Heating Portable Fuel Cell Power Systems for Energy-Efficient and Reliable Operation

Using hydrogen fuel cells for power systems temperature conditions are important for efficient and reliable operations especially in low-temperature environments. A heating system with an electrical energy buffer is therefore required for reliable operation. There is a research gap in finding an appropriate control strategy regarding energy efficiency and reliable operations for different environmental conditions. This paper investigates heating strategies for the subfreezing start of a fuel cell for portable applications at an early development stage to enable frontloading in product engineering. The strategies were investigated by simulation and experiment. A prototype for such a system was built and tested for subfreezing start-ups and non-subfreezing start-ups. This was done by heating the fuel cell system with different control strategies to test their efficiency. It was found that operating strategies to heat up the fuel cell system can ensure a more reliable and energy efficient operation. The heating strategy needs to be adjusted according to the ambient conditions as this influences the required heating energy efficiency and reliable operation of the system. A differentiation in the control strategy between subfreezing and non-subfreezing temperatures is recommended due to reliability reasons.
A Review on Hydrogen-Based Hybrid Microgrid System: Topologies for Hydrogen Energy Storage, Integration, and Energy Management with Solar and Wind Energy

Hydrogen is acknowledged as a potential and appealing energy carrier for decarbonizing the sectors that contribute to global warming such as power generation industries and transportation. Many people are interested in employing low-carbon sources of energy to produce hydrogen by using water electrolysis. Additionally the intermittency of renewable energy supplies such as wind and solar makes electricity generation less predictable potentially leading to power network incompatibilities. Hence hydrogen generation and storage can offer a solution by enhancing system flexibility. Hydrogen saved as compressed gas could be turned back into energy or utilized as a feedstock for manufacturing building heating and automobile fuel. This work identified many hydrogen production strategies storage methods and energy management strategies in the hybrid microgrid (HMG). This paper discusses a case study of a HMG system that uses hydrogen as one of the main energy sources together with a solar panel and wind turbine (WT). The bidirectional AC-DC converter (BAC) is designed for HMGs to maintain power and voltage balance between the DC and AC grids. This study offers a control approach based on an analysis of the BAC’s main circuit that not only accomplishes the function of bidirectional power conversion but also facilitates smooth renewable energy integration. While implementing the hydrogen-based HMG the developed control technique reduces the reactive power in linear and non-linear (NL) loads by 90.3% and 89.4%.
Fuel Cell Power Systems for Maritime Applications: Progress and Perspectives

Fuel cells as clean power sources are very attractive for the maritime sector which is committed to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant emissions from ships. This paper presents a technological review on fuel cell power systems for maritime applications from the past two decades. The available fuels including hydrogen ammonia renewable methane and methanol for fuel cells under the context of sustainable maritime transportation and their pre-processing technologies are analyzed. Proton exchange membrane molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells are found to be the most promising options for maritime applications once energy efficiency power capacity and sensitivity to fuel impurities are considered. The types layouts and characteristics of fuel cell modules are summarized based on the existing applications in particular industrial or residential sectors. The various research and demonstration projects of fuel cell power systems in the maritime industry are reviewed and the challenges with regard to power capacity safety reliability durability operability and costs are analyzed. Currently power capacity costs and lifetime of the fuel cell stack are the primary barriers. Coupling with batteries modularization mass production and optimized operating and control strategies are all important pathways to improve the performance of fuel cell power systems.
Investigation on Green Hydrogen Generation Devices Dedicated for Integrated Renewable Energy Farm: Solar and Wind

This study presents a comprehensive methodology to evaluate plants that integrate renewable energy sources and hydrogen generation devices. The paper focuses on presenting the methods for devices’ operation assessment taking into account the annual operation. Multiple effectiveness indices have been presented. On the basis of experimental investigation with the hydrogen generator the methods for assessing its operation during start-up phase and sudden change in the supply current were proposed. The results of the experiments and the provided mathematical models show that dynamics of the hydrogen generator should be taken into account when selecting the suitable device for cooperation with variable renewable energy. It is especially important for multiple start-ups throughout the day due to significant differences in the amount of hydrogen produced by devices characterized by the same efficiency yet various time constants. Methodology for selecting the optimal nominal power for hydrogen generator to cooperate with given renewable sources was developed. It was proven the optimal power depends on the type of the renewable source and minimal load of the hydrogen generator. Several case studies including the integration of wind and solar energy farms to yield a 10 MW renewable energy farm were considered and the minimal load of the hydrogen generator impacts the annual operation of the device has been presented. The paper provides a set of tools to contribute to the development of sustainable energy plants. The methods proposed in this paper are universal and can be used for various renewable energy sources.
Optimising Renewable Generation Configurations of Off-grid Green Ammonia Production System Considering Haber-Bosch Flexibility

Green ammonia has received increasing interest for its potential as an energy carrier in the international trade of renewable power. This paper considers the factors that contribute to producing cost-competitive green ammonia from an exporter’s perspective. These factors include renewable resource quality across potential sites operating modes for off-grid plants and seasonal complementarity with trade buyers. The study applies a mixed-integer programming model and uses Australia as a case study because of its excellent solar and wind resources and the potential for synergy between Southern Hemisphere supply and Northern Hemisphere demand. Although renewable resources are unevenly distributed across Australia and present distinct diurnal and seasonal variability modelling shows that most of the pre-identified hydrogen hubs in each state and territory of Australia can produce cost-competitive green ammonia providing the electrolysis and Haber-Bosch processes are partially flexible to cope with the variability of renewables. Flexible operation reduces energy curtailment and leads to lower storage capacity requirements using batteries or hydrogen storage which would otherwise increase system costs. In addition an optimised combination of wind and solar can reduce the magnitude of storage required. Providing that a partially flexible Haber Bosch plant is commercially available the modelling shows a levelised cost of ammonia (LCOA) of AU$756/tonne and AU$659/tonne in 2025 and 2030 respectively. Based on these results green ammonia would be cost-competitive with grey ammonia in 2030 given a feedstock natural gas price higher than AU$14/MBtu. For green ammonia to be cost-competitive with grey ammonia assuming a lower gas price of AU$6/MBtu a carbon price would need to be in place of at least AU$123/tonne. Given that there is a greater demand for energy in winter concurrent with lower solar power production there may be opportunities for solar-based Southern Hemisphere suppliers to supply the major industrial regions most of which are located in the Northern Hemisphere.
Promising Technology Analysis and Patent Roadmap Development in the Hydrogen Supply Chain

Hydrogen energy one of the energy sources of the future represents a substantial issue which affects the industries and national technologies that will develop in the future. In order to utilize hydrogen energy a hydrogen supply chain is required so that hydrogen can be processed and transported to vehicles. It is helpful for technology and policy development to analyze technologies necessary to charge the hydrogen energy generated into vehicles through the supply chain to discover technologies with high potential for future development. The purpose of this paper is to identify promising technologies required in storing transporting and charging vehicles generated by the hydrogen fuel supply chain. Afterward the promising technologies identified are expected to help researchers set a direction in researching technologies and developing related policies. Therefore we provide technology information that can be used promisingly in the future so that researchers in the related field can utilize it effectively. In this paper data analysis is performed using related patents and research papers for technical analysis. Promising technologies that will be the core of the hydrogen fuel supply chain in the future were identified using the published patents and research paper database (DB) in Korea the United States Europe China and Japan. A text mining technique was applied to preprocess data and then a generic topographic map (GTM) analysis discovered promising technologies. Then a technology roadmap was identified by analyzing the promising technology derived from patents and research papers in parallel. In this study through the analysis of patents and research papers related to the hydrogen supply chain the development status of hydrogen storage/transport/charging technology was analyzed and promising technologies with high potential for future development were found. The technology roadmap derived from the analysis can help researchers in the field of hydrogen research establish policies and research technologies.

The world is facing a challenge in meeting its needs for energy. Global energy consumption in the last half-century has increased very rapidly and is expected to continue to grow over the next 50 years. However it is expected to see significant differences between the last 50 years and the next. This paper aims at introducing a good solution to replace or work with conventional marine power plants. This includes the use of fuel cell power plant operated with hydrogen produced through water electrolysis or hydrogen produced from natural gas gasoline or diesel fuels through steam reforming processes to mitigate air pollution from ships.
Effects of Compression Ratios on Combustion and Emission Characteristics of SI Engine Fueled with Hydrogen-Enriched Biogas Mixture

The effects of hydrogen-enriched biogas on combustion and emissions of a dual-fuel sparkignition engine with different hydrogen concentration ratios were studied numerically. A 1-cylinder spark ignition was used to perform a numerical simulation. To reveal the influence of the compression ratios on combustion and emissions of a gaseous engine the crankshaft of the engine was modified to generate different compression ratios of 8.5 9.0 9.4 10.0 and 10.4. The biogas contained 60 and 40% methane (CH4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) respectively while the hydrogen fractions used to enrich biogas were 10 20 and 30% of the mixture by volume. The ignition timing is fixed at 350 CA◦ . The results indicate that the in-cylinder pressure combustion temperature and combustion burning speed increase gradually with increasing hydrogen concentration due to the combustion characteristics of hydrogen in blends. As increasing the compression ratio NOx emissions increase proportionally while CO2 emissions decrease gradually. Almost no combustion process occurs as operating the compression ratio below 8.5 when using pure biogas. However adding 20% of hydrogen fraction could improve the combustion process significantly even at a low compression ratio.

This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up high efficiency no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs as this determines the cell losses and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community there is a need for public sensitization as some people have reservations regarding the safety of the technology. This hurdle can be overcome if there is a well-documented risk assessment which also needs to be considered in future research activities.
Advances in Hydrogen Production from Natural Gas Reforming

Steam natural gas reforming is the preferred technique presently used to produce hydrogen. Proposed in 1932 the technique is very well established but still subjected to perfections. Herein first the improvements being sought in catalysts and processes are reviewed and then the advantage of replacing the energy supply from burning fuels with concentrated solar energy is discussed. It is especially this advance that may drastically reduce the economic and environmental cost of hydrogen production. Steam reforming can be easily integrated into concentrated solar with thermal storage for continuous hydrogen production.
Decarbonization in Ammonia Production, New Technological Methods in Industrial Scale Ammonia Production and Critical Evaluations

With the synthesis of ammonia with chemical methods global carbon emission is the biggest threat to global warming. However the dependence of the agricultural industry on ammonia production brings with it various research studies in order to minimize the carbon emission that occurs with the ammonia synthesis process. In order to completely eliminate the carbon emissions from ammonia production both the hydrogen and the energy needed for the operation of the process must be obtained from renewable sources. Thus hydrogen can be produced commercially in a variety of ways. Many processes are discussed to accompany the Haber Bosch process in ammonia production as potential competitors. In addition to parameters such as temperature and pressure various plasma catalysts are being studied to accelerate the ammonia production reaction. In this study various alternative processes for the capture storage and complete removal of carbon gas released during the current ammonia production are evaluated and the current conditions related to the applicability of these processes are discussed. In addition it has been discussed under which conditions it is possible to produce larger capacities as needed in the processes studied in order to reduce carbon gas emissions during ammonia production in order to provide raw material source for fertilizer production and energy sector. However if the hydrogen gas required for ammonia production is produced using a solid oxide electrolysis cell the reduction in the energy requirement of the process and in this case the reduction of energy costs shows that it will play an important role in determining the method to be used for ammonia production. In addition it is predicted that working at lower temperature (<400 °C) and pressure (<10 bar) values in existing ammonia production technologies despite increasing possible energy costs will significantly reduce process operating costs.
Optimal Incorporation of Intermittent Renewable Energy Storage Units and Green Hydrogen Production in the Electrical Sector

This paper presents a mathematical programming approach for the strategic planning of hydrogen production from renewable energies and its use in electric power generation in conventional technologies. The proposed approach aims to determine the optimal selection of the different types of technologies electrolyzers and storage units (energy and hydrogen). The approach considers the implementation of an optimization methodology to select a representative data set that characterizes the total annual demand. The economic objective aims to determine the minimum cost which is composed of the capital costs in the acquisition of units operating costs of such units costs of production and transmission of energy as well as the cost associated with the emissions generated which is related to an environmental tax. A specific case study is presented in the Mexican peninsula and the results show that it is possible to produce hydrogen at a minimum sale price of 4200 $/tonH2 with a total cost of $5.1687 × 106 and 2.5243 × 105 tonCO2eq. In addition the financial break-even point corresponds to a sale price of 6600 $/tonH2 . The proposed model determines the trade-offs between the cost and the emissions generated.
An Overview of Water Electrolysis Technologies for Green Hydrogen Production

Decarbonizing the planet is one of the major goals that countries around the world have set for 2050 to mitigate the effects of climate change. To achieve these goals green hydrogen that can be produced from the electrolysis of water is an important key solution to tackle global decarbonization. Consequently in recent years there is an increase in interest towards green hydrogen production through the electrolysis process for large-scale implementation of renewable energy based power plants and other industrial and transportation applications. The main objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of various green hydrogen production technologies especially on water electrolysis. In this review various water electrolysis technologies and their techno-commercial prospects including hydrogen production cost along with recent developments in electrode materials and their challenges were summarized. Further some of the most successful results also were described. Moreover this review aims to identify the gaps in water electrolysis research and development towards the techno-commercial perspective. In addition some of the commercial electrolyzer performances and their limitations also were described along with possible solutions for cost-effective hydrogen production Finally we outlined our ideas and possible solutions for driving cost-effective green hydrogen production for commercial applications. This information will provide future research directions and a road map for the development/implementation of commercially viable green hydrogen projects.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV): Policy Advances to Enhance Commercial Success

Many initiatives and policies attempt to make our air cleaner by reducing the carbon foot imprint on our planet. Most of the existing and planned initiatives have as their objectives the reduction of carbon dependency and the enhancement of newer or better technologies in the near future. However numerous policies exist for electric vehicles (EVs) and only some policies address specific issues related to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). The lack of a distinction between the policies for EVs and FCEVs provides obstacles for the advancement of FCEV-related technologies that may otherwise be successful and competitive in the attempt to create a cleaner planet. Unfortunately the lack of this distinction is not always based on intellectual or scientific evidence. Therefore governments may need to introduce clearer policy distinctions in order to directly address FCEV-related challenges that may not pertain to other EVs. Unfortunately lobbyism continues to exist that supports the maintenance of the status quo as new technologies may threaten traditional less sustainable approaches to provide opportunities for a better environment. This lobbyism has partially succeeded in hindering the advancement of new technologies partially because the development of new technologies may reduce profit and business opportunities for traditionalists. However these challenges are slowly overcome as the demand for cleaner air and lower carbon emissions has increased and a stronger movement toward newer and cleaner technologies has gained momentum. This paper will look at policies that have been either implemented or are in the process of being implemented to address the challenge of overcoming traditional obstacles with respect to the automobile industry. The paper reviewed synthesized and discussed policies in the USA Japan and the European Union that helped implement new technologies with a focus on FCEVs for larger mass markets. These regions were the focus of this paper because of their particular challenges. South Korea and China were not included in this discussion as these countries already have equal or even more advanced policies and initiatives in place.
Biohydrogen—A Green Fuel for Sustainable Energy Solutions

Energy plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of modern nations. Today hydrogen is considered the most promising alternative fuel as it can be generated from clean and green sources. Moreover it is an efficient energy carrier because hydrogen burning only generates water as a byproduct. Currently it is generated from natural gas. However it can be produced using other methods i.e. physicochemical thermal and biological. The biological method is considered more environmentally friendly and pollution free. This paper aims to provide an updated review of biohydrogen production via photofermentation dark fermentation and microbial electrolysis cells using different waste materials as feedstocks. Besides the role of nanotechnology in enhancing biohydrogen production is examined. Under anaerobic conditions hydrogen is produced during the conversion of organic substrate into organic acids using fermentative bacteria and during the conversion of organic acids into hydrogen and carbon dioxide using photofermentative bacteria. Different factors that enhance the biohydrogen production of these organisms either combined or sequentially using dark and photofermentation processes are examined and the effect of each factor on biohydrogen production efficiency is reported. A comparison of hydrogen production efficiency between dark fermentation photofermentation and two-stage processes is also presented.
Propulsion System Integration for a First-generation Hydrogen Civil Airliner?

An unusual philosophical approach is proposed here to decarbonise larger civil aircraft that fly long ranges and consume a large fraction of civil aviation fuel. These inject an important amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and holistic decarbonising solutions must consider this sector. A philosophical–analytical investigation is reported here on the feasibility of an airliner family to fly over long ranges and assist in the elimination of carbon dioxide emissions from civil aviation. Backed by state-of-the-art correlations and engine performance integration analytical tools a family of large airliners is proposed based on the development and integration of the body of a very large two-deck four-engine airliner with the engines wings and flight control surfaces of a very long-range twin widebody jet. The proposal is for a derivative design and not a retrofit. This derivative design may enable a swifter entry to service. The main contribution of this study is a philosophical one: a carefully evaluated aircraft family that appears to have very good potential for first-generation hydrogen-fuelled airliners using gas turbine engines for propulsion. This family offers three variants: a 380-passenger aircraft with a range of 3300nm a 330-passenger aircraft with a range of 4800nm and a 230- passenger aircraft with a range of 5500nm. The latter range is crucially important because it permits travel from anywhere in the globe to anywhere else with only one stop. The jet engine of choice is a 450kN high-bypass turbofan.
Fracture Properties of Welded 304L in Hydrogen Environments

Austenitic stainless steels are used for hydrogen containment of high-pressure hydrogen gas due to their ability to retain high fracture properties despite the degradation due to hydrogen. Forging and other strain-hardening processes are desirable for austenitic stainless steels to increase the material strength and thus accommodate higher stresses and reduce material costs. Welding is often necessary for assembling components but it represents an area of concern in pressure containment structures due to the potential for defects more environmentally susceptible microstructure and reduced strength. Electron beam (EB) welding represent an advanced joining process which has advantages over traditional arc welding techniques through reduced input heat and reduced heat-affected zone (HAZ) microstructure and thus present a means to maintain high strength and improve weld performance in hydrogen gas containment. In this study fracture coupons were extracted from EB welds in forged 304L and subjected to thermal gaseous hydrogen precharging at select pressures to introduce different levels of internal hydrogen content. Fracture tests were then performed on hydrogen precharged coupons at temperatures of both 293 K and 223 K. It was observed that fracture resistance (JH) was dependent on internal hydrogen concentration; higher hydrogen concentrations resulted in lower fracture resistance in both the forged 304L base material and the 304L EB welds. This trend was also apparent at both temperatures: 293 K and 223 K. EB weld samples however maintain high fracture resistance comparable to the forged 304L base material. The role of weld microstructure solidification on fracture is discussed.
Prospect of Green Hydrogen Generation from Hybrid Renewable Energy Sources: A Review

Hydrogen is one of the prospective clean energies that could potentially address two pressing areas of global concern namely energy crises and environmental issues. Nowadays fossil‐ based technologies are widely used to produce hydrogen and release higher greenhouse gas emis‐ sions during the process. Decarbonizing the planet has been one of the major goals in the recent decades. To achieve this goal it is necessary to find clean sustainable and reliable hydrogen pro‐ duction technologies with low costs and zero emissions. Therefore this study aims to analyse the hydrogen generation from solar and wind energy sources and observe broad prospects with hybrid renewable energy sources in producing green hydrogen. The study mainly focuses on the critical assessment of solar wind and hybrid‐powered electrolysis technologies in producing hydrogen. Furthermore the key challenges and opportunities associated with commercial‐scale deployment are addressed. Finally the potential applications and their scopes are discussed to analyse the important barriers to the overall commercial development of solar‐wind‐based hydrogen production systems. The study found that the production of hydrogen appears to be the best candidate to be employed for multiple purposes blending the roles of fuel energy carrier and energy storage modality. Further studies are recommended to find technical and sustainable solutions to overcome the current issues that are identified in this study.
Power-to-hydrogen Storage Integrated with Rooftop Photovoltaic Systems and Combined Heat and Power Plants

The growing share of intermittent renewable energy sources for power generation indicates an increasing demand for flexibility in the energy system. Energy storage technologies ensure a balance between demand and supply and increase the system flexibility. This study investigates increased application of renewable energy resources at a regional scale. Power-to-gas storage that interacts with a large-scale rooftop photovoltaic system is added to a regional energy system dominated by combined heat and power plants. The study addresses the influence of the storage system on the production planning of the combined heat and power plants and the system flexibility. The system is modeled and the product costs are optimized using the Mixed Integer Linear Programming method as well as considering the effects on CO2 emissions and power import into the regional system. The optimization model is investigated by developing different scenarios for the capacity and cost of the storage system. The results indicate that the proposed storage system increases the system flexibility and can reduce power imports and the marginal emissions by around 53% compared with the current energy system. There is a potential to convert a large amount of excess power to hydrogen and store it in the system. However because of low efficiency a fuel cell cannot significantly contribute to power regeneration from the stored hydrogen. Therefore for about 70% of the year the power is imported to the optimized system to compensate the power shortfalls rather than to use the fuel cell.
Green and Blue Hydrogen Production: An Overview in Colombia

Colombia a privileged country in terms of diversity availability of natural resources and geographical location has set a roadmap for hydrogen as part of the energy transition plan proposed in 2021. To reduce its emissions in the mid-term and foster its economy hydrogen production should be green and blue with specific targets set for 2030 for the hydrogen costs and produced quantities. This work compares the state-of-the-art production of blue and green hydrogen and how Colombia is doing in each pathway. A deeper analysis considers the advantages of Colombia’s natural resources the possible paths the government could follow and the feedstock’s geographical location for hydrogen production and transportation. Then one discusses what may be the next steps in terms of policies and developments to succeed in implementing the plan. Overall it is concluded that green hydrogen could be the faster more sustainable and more efficient method to implement in Colombia. However blue hydrogen could play an essential role if oil and gas companies assess the advantages of carbon dioxide utilization and promote its deployment.

Fuel Cells for Shipping: To Meet On-board Auxiliary Demand and Reduce Emissions

The reduction of harmful emissions from the international shipping sector is necessary. On-board energy demand can be categorised as either: propulsion or auxiliary services. Auxiliary services contribute a significant proportion of energy demand with major loads including: compressors pumps and HVAC (heating ventilation and air-conditioning). Typically this demand is met using the same fuel source as the main propulsion (i.e. fossil fuels). This study has analysed whether emissions from large scale ships could feasibly be reduced by meeting auxiliary demand by installing a hydrogen fuel cell using data from an LNG tanker to develop a case study. Simulations have shown that for a capacity of 10 x 40ft containers of compressed hydrogen the optimal fuel cell size would be 3 MW and this could save 10600 MWh of fossil fuel use equivalent to 2343 t of CO2. Hence this could potentially decarbonise a significant proportion of shipping energy demand. Although there are some notable technical and commercial considerations such as fuel cell lifetime and capital expenditure requirements. Results imply that if auxiliary loads could be managed to avoid peaks in demand this could further increase the effectiveness of this concept.
Proposed Approach to Calculate Safety Distances for Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Italy

In 2021 only 6 hydrogen fuelling station have been built in Italy of which 3 are not operational and only 1 is open to the public while the rest are built in private or industrial areas. While fuelling station which store more than 5000 kg of hydrogen are subjected to the “Seveso Directive” the permitting procedure for refuelling station which store less than the threshold is supervised by the fire brigade command of the province where the station is built. Recently in the effort to easy the permitting procedure to establish new stations a Ministerial Decree was published in the official gazette of the Italian Republic which lists minimum safety features and safety distances that if respected guarantee the approval by the authority. Nevertheless the imposed distances are such that the land required to build the station constitute a barrier rather than a facilitation. Exploiting the possibility introduced by the Decree to calculate safety distances following a Fire Safety Engineering approach a method is proposed for calculation of safety distances. The present paper presents the Italian regulation and describes an approach to calculate the safety distances including an example applied on the dispenser.
The Potential Role of Flying Vehicles in Progressing the Energy Transition

An energy transition is in progress around the globe notably led by an increase in the deployment of renewable energy and a shift toward less emissions-intense options notably in the transportation sector. This research investigates the potential role that new transportation options namely flying vehicles may play toward progressing the energy transition. As flying vehicles are a relatively new technology yet to penetrate the market it is also prudent to consider the ethical legal and social issues (ELSI) associated with their implementation alongside the potential energy and environmental impacts. Through a review of ELSI and energy and environmental literature we identify research gaps and identify how flying vehicles may impact upon the energy transition over time. Our research identifies several critical aspects of both ELSI and energy and environmental academia relevant to the future deployment of flying vehicles and describes a deployment timeline and the resultant societal outcomes. We find that flying vehicles could drive the energy transition and the hydrogen economy and that their widespread adoption could engender shared socio-environmental benefits. Our findings are relevant to transportation and environmental policymakers and identify critical considerations for the planned introduction of new shared transportation options to the market conducive to a sustainable energy transition.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Emulator for Power Electronics Testing Applications

This article aims to develop a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer emulator. This emulator is realized through an equivalent electrical scheme. It allows taking into consideration the dynamic operation of PEM electrolyzers which is generally neglected in the literature. PEM electrolyzer dynamics are reproduced by the use of supercapacitors due to the high value of the equivalent double-layer capacitance value. Steady-state and dynamics operations are investigated in this work. The design criteria are addressed. The PEM electrolyzer emulator is validated by using a 400-W commercial PEM electrolyzer. This emulator is conceived to test new DC-DC converters to supply the PEM ELs and their control as well avoiding the risk to damage a real electrolyzer for experiment purposes. The proposed approach is valid both for a single cell and for the whole stack emulation.
Assessment of Hydrogen Fuel for Rotorcraft Applications

This paper presents the application of a multidisciplinary approach for the preliminary design and evaluation of the potential improvements in performance and environmental impact through the utilization of compressed (CGH2) and liquefied (LH2) hydrogen fuel for a civil tilt-rotor modelled after the NASA XV-15. The methodology deployed comprises models for rotorcraft flight dynamics engine performance flight path analysis hydrogen tank and thermal management system sizing. Trade-offs between gravimetric efficiency energy consumption fuel burn CO2 emissions and cost are quantified and compared to the kerosene-fuelled rotorcraft. The analysis carried out suggests that for these vehicle scales gravimetric efficiencies of the order of 13% and 30% can be attained for compressed and liquid hydrogen storage respectively leading to reduced range capability relative to the baseline tilt-rotor by at least 40%. At mission level it is shown that the hydrogen-fuelled configurations result in increased energy consumption by at least 12% (LH2) and 5% (CGH2) but at the same time significantly reduced life-cycle carbon emissions compared to the kerosene counterpart. Although LH2 storage at cryogenic conditions has a higher gravimetric efficiency than CGH2 (at 700 bar) it is shown that for this class of rotorcraft the latter is more energy efficient when the thermal management system for fuel pressurization and heating prior to combustion is accounted for.
Sector Coupling and Migration towards Carbon-Neutral Power Systems

There is increasing interest in migrating to a carbon-neutral power system that relies on renewable energy due to concerns about greenhouse gas emissions energy shortages and global warming. However the increasing share of renewable energy has added volatility and uncertainty to power system operations. Introducing new devices and using flexible resources may help solve the problem but expanding the domain of the problem can be another solution. Sector coupling which integrates production consumption conversion and storage by connecting various energy domains could potentially meet the needs of each energy sector. It can also reduce the generation of surplus energy and unnecessary carbon emissions. As a result sector coupling an integrated energy system increases the acceptance of renewable energy in the traditional power system and makes it carbon neutral. However difficulties in large-scale integration low conversion efficiency and economic feasibility remain obstacles. This perspective paper discusses the background definition and components of sector coupling as well as its functions and examples in rendering power systems carbon-neutral. The current limitations and outlook of sector coupling are also examined.
Optimising Onshore Wind with Energy Storage Considering Curtailment

Operating energy storage alongside onshore wind can improve its economics whilst providing a pathway for otherwise curtailed generation. In this work we present a framework to evaluate the economic potential of onshore wind co-located with battery storage (BS) and a hydrogen electrolyser (HE). This model is applied to a case study in Great Britain using historic data and considering local network charges and the cost of using curtailed power capturing an often neglected element of competition. We use a Markov Chain to model wind curtailment and determine the optimised scheduling of the storage as we vary price parameters and storage sizing. Finally by considering storage CAPEX and comparing against the case with no storage we can determine the value added (or lost) by different sized BS and HE for an onshore wind owner as a function of power purchase agreement (PPA) and green hydrogen market price. Results show that value added increases when HE is increased and when BS is decreased. Additionally a 10 MW electrolysers uses 27% more curtailed wind than 10 MW BS.

Study on the Effect of Second Injection Timing on the Engine Performances of a Gasoline/Hydrogen SI Engine with Split Hydrogen Direct Injecting

Split hydrogen direct injection (SHDI) has been proved capable of better efficiency and fewer emissions. Therefore to investigate SHDI deeply a numerical study on the effect of second injection timing was presented at a gasoline/hydrogen spark ignition (SI) engine with SHDI. With an excess air ratio of 1.5 five different second injection timings achieved five kinds of hydrogen mixture distribution (HMD) which was the main factor affecting the engine performances. With SHDI since the HMD is manageable the engine can achieve better efficiency and fewer emissions. When the second injection timing was 105◦ crank angle (CA) before top dead center (BTDC) the Pmax was the highest and the position of the Pmax was the earliest. Compared with the single hydrogen direct injection (HDI) the NOX CO and HC emissions with SHDI were reduced by 20% 40% and 72% respectively.

Among the alternative fuels enabling the energy transition hydrogen-based transportation is a sustainable and efficient choice. It finds application both in light-duty and heavy-duty mobility. However hydrogen gas has unique qualities that must be taken into account when employed in such vehicles: high-pressure levels up to 900 bar storage in composite tanks with a temperature limit of 85 ◦C and a negative Joule–Thomson coefficient throughout a wide range of operational parameters. Moreover to perform a refueling procedure that is closer to the driver’s expectations a fast process that requires pre-cooling the gas to −40 ◦C is necessary. The purpose of this work is to examine the major phenomena that occur during the hydrogen refueling process by analyzing the relevant theory and existing modeling methodologies.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation Evaluation for Hydrogen Vehicles in Private Garages. Experiments and Modelling

Governments and local authorities introduce new incentives and regulations for cleaner mobility as part of their environmental strategies to address energy challenges. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are becoming increasingly important and will extend beyond captive fleets reaching private users. Research on hydrogen safety issues is currently led in several projects in order to highlight and manage risks of FCEVs in confined spaces such as tunnels underground parkings repair garages etc. But what about private garages - that involve specific geometries volumes congestion ventilation? This study has been carried out in the framework of PRHyVATE JIP project which aims at better understanding hydrogen build-up and distribution in a private garage. The investigation went through different rates and modes of ventilation. As first step an HAZID (Hazard Identification) has been realized for a generic FCEV. This preliminary work allowed to select and prioritize accidental release scenarios to be explored experimentally with helium in a 40-m3 garage. Several configurations of release ventilation modes and congestion – in transient regime and at steady state – have been tested. Then analytical and numerical calculation approaches have been applied and adjusted to develop a simplified methodology. This methodology takes into account natural ventilation for assessment of hydrogen accumulation and mitigation means optimization. Finally a global risk evaluation – including ignition of a flammable hydrogen-air mixture – has been performed to account for the mostly feared events and to evaluate their consequences in a private garage. Thus preliminary recommendations good practices and safety features for safely parking FCEVs in private garages can be proposed.
An Analysis on the Compressed Hydrogen Storage System for the Fast-Filling Process of Hydrogen Gas at the Pressure of 82 MPa

During the fast-filling of a high-pressure hydrogen tank the temperature of hydrogen would rise significantly and may lead to failure of the tank. In addition the temperature rise also reduces hydrogen density in the tank which causes mass decrement into the tank. Therefore it is of practical significance to study the temperature rise and the amount of charging of hydrogen for hydrogen safety. In this paper the change of hydrogen temperature in the tank according to the pressure rise during the process of charging the high-pressure tank in the process of a 82-MPa hydrogen filling system the final temperature the amount of filling of hydrogen gas and the change of pressure of hydrogen through the pressure reducing valve and the performance of heat exchanger for cooling high-temperature hydrogen were analyzed by theoretical and numerical methods. When high-pressure filling began in the initial vacuum state the condition was called the “First cycle”. When the high-pressure charging process began in the remaining condition the process was called the “Second cycle”. As a result of the theoretical analysis the final temperatures of hydrogen gas were calculated to be 436.09 K for the first cycle of the high-pressure tank and 403.55 for the second cycle analysis. The internal temperature of the buffer tank increased by 345.69 K and 32.54 K in the first cycle and second cycles after high-pressure filling. In addition the final masses were calculated to be 11.58 kg and 12.26 kg for the first cycle and second cycle of the high-pressure tank respectively. The works of the paper can provide suggestions for the temperature rise of 82 MPa compressed hydrogen storage system and offer necessary theory and numerical methods for guiding safe operation and construction of a hydrogen filling system.
Impacts of Renewable Energy Resources on Effectiveness of Grid-Integrated Systems: Succinct Review of Current Challenges and Potential Solution Strategies

This study is aimed at a succinct review of practical impacts of grid integration of renewable energy systems on effectiveness of power networks as well as often employed state-of-the-art solution strategies. The renewable energy resources focused on include solar energy wind energy biomass energy and geothermal energy as well as renewable hydrogen/fuel cells which although not classified purely as renewable resources are a famous energy carrier vital for future energy sustainability. Although several world energy outlooks have suggested that the renewable resources available worldwide are sufficient to satisfy global energy needs in multiples of thousands the different challenges often associated with practical exploitation have made this assertion an illusion to date. Thus more research efforts are required to synthesize the nature of these challenges as well as viable solution strategies hence the need for this review study. First brief overviews are provided for each of the studied renewable energy sources. Next challenges and solution strategies associated with each of them at generation phase are discussed with reference to power grid integration. Thereafter challenges and common solution strategies at the grid/electrical interface are discussed for each of the renewable resources. Finally expert opinions are provided comprising a number of aphorisms deducible from the review study which reveal knowledge gaps in the field and potential roadmap for future research. In particular these opinions include the essential roles that renewable hydrogen will play in future energy systems; the need for multi-sectoral coupling specifically by promoting electric vehicle usage and integration with renewable-based power grids; the need for cheaper energy storage devices attainable possibly by using abandoned electric vehicle batteries for electrical storage and by further development of advanced thermal energy storage systems (overviews of state-of-the-art thermal and electrochemical energy storage are also provided); amongst others.
Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Leakage from Fuel Cell Vehicle in an Outdoor Parking Garage

It is significant to assess the hydrogen safety of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) in parking garages with a rapidly increased number of FCVs. In the present work a Flame Acceleration Simulator (FLACS) a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) module using finite element calculation was utilized to predict the dispersion process of flammable hydrogen clouds which was performed by hydrogen leakage from a fuel cell vehicle in an outdoor parking garage. The effect of leakage diameter (2 mm 3 mm and 4 mm) and parking configurations (vertical and parallel parking) on the formation of flammable clouds with a range of 4–75% by volume was considered. The emission was assumed to be directed downwards from a Thermally Activated Pressure Relief Device (TPRD) of a 70 MPa storage tank. The results show that the 0.7 m parking space stipulated by the current regulations is less than the safety space of fuel cell vehicles. Compared with a vertical parking configuration it is safer to park FCVs in parallel. It was also shown that release through a large TPRD orifice should be avoided as the proportion of the larger hydrogen concentration in the whole flammable domain is prone to more accidental severe consequences such as overpressure.
Influence of Hydrogen Enrichment Strategy on Performance Characteristics, Combustion and Emissions of a Rotary Engine for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

In recent years there has been great interest in Wankel-type rotary engines which are one of the most suitable power sources for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications due to their high power-to-size and power-to-weight ratios. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential of a hydrogen enrichment strategy for the improvement of the performance and reduction of the emissions of Wankel engines. The main motivation behind this study was to make Wankel engines which are already very advantageous for UAV applications even more advantageous by applying the hydrogen enrichment technique. In this study hydrogen addition was implemented in a spark-ignition rotary engine model operating at a constant engine speed of 6000 rpm. The mass fraction of hydrogen in the intake gradually increased from 0% to 10%. Simulation results revealed that addition of hydrogen to the fuel accelerated the flame propagation and increased the burning speed of the fuel the combustion temperature and the peak pressure in the working chamber. These phenomena had a very positive effect on the performance and emissions of the Wankel engine. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) increased by 8.18% and 9.68% and the indicated torque increased by 6.15% and 7.99% for the 5% and 10% hydrogen mass fraction cases respectively compared to those obtained with neat gasoline. In contrast CO emissions were reduced by 33.35% and 46.21% and soot emissions by 11.92% and 20.06% for 5% and 10% hydrogen additions respectively. NOx emissions increased with the application of the hydrogen enrichment strategy for the Wankel engine.
Thermodynamic Performance and Creep Life Assessment Comparing Hydrogen- and Jet-Fueled Turbofan Aero Engine

There is renewed interest in hydrogen as an alternative fuel for aero engines due to their perceived environmental and performance benefits compared to jet fuel. This paper presents a cycle thermal performance energy and creep life assessment of hydrogen compared with jet fuel using a turbofan aero engine. The turbofan cycle performance was simulated using a code developed by the authors that allows hydrogen and jet fuel to be selected as fuel input. The exergy assessment uses both conservations of energy and mass and the second law of thermodynamics to understand the impact of the fuels on the exergy destruction exergy efficiency waste factor ratio environmental effect factor and sustainability index for a turbofan aero engine. Finally the study looks at a top-level creep life assessment on the high-pressure turbine hot section influenced by the fuel heating values. This study shows performance (64% reduced fuel flow rate better SFC) and more extended blade life (15% increase) benefits using liquefied hydrogen fuel which corresponds with other literary work on the benefits of LH2 over jet fuel. This paper also highlights some drawbacks of hydrogen fuel based on previous research work and gives recommendations for future work aimed at maturing the hydrogen fuel concept in aviation.
Quantitative Risk Analysis of Scaled-up Hydrogen Facilities

Development of hydrogen facilities such as hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) at scale is a fine balance between economy and safety where an optimal solution would both prevent showstoppers due to cost of increased safety measures and prevent showstoppers due to hydrogen accidents. A detailed Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) methodology is presented where the aim is to establish the total risk of the facility and use it to find the right level of safety features such as blast walls and layout. With upscaled hydrogen facilities comes larger area footprints and more potential leak points. These effects will cause increased possible consequence in terms of vapour cloud explosions and increased leak frequencies. Both effects contributing negative to the total risk of the hydrogen facility. At the same time as the number of such facilities is increasing rapidly the frequency of incidents can also increase. A risk-based approach is employed where inherently safe solutions is investigated and cost efficient and acceptable solutions can be established. The present QRA uses well established tools such as SAFETI FLACS and Express which are fitted for hydrogen risks. By using the established Explosion Risk Analysis tool Express the explosion risk inside the station can be found. By using CFD tools actively one can point at physical risk drivers such as equipment layout that can minimize gas cloud build-up on the station. The explosion simulations are further used to find the effects of e.g. blast wall on the pressures affecting on people on the other side of the wall. This is used together with the results from the SAFETI analysis to develop risk contours around the facility. Current standardized safety distances are discussed by considering the effects of scaling and risk drivers on the safety distances. The methodology can be used to develop certain requirement for how hydrogen facilities should be built inherently safe and in cost-efficient ways.
Reliability Analysis of Pyrotechnic Igniter for Hydrogen-Oxygen Rocket Engine with Low Temperature Combustion Instability Failure Mode

To evaluate the functional reliability of the pyrotechnic igniter in the failure mode of unstable combustion at low temperature a reliability and reliability sensitivity analysis method based on the combination of an interior ballistic model and Kriging reliability method is proposed. Through the deterministic interior ballistic simulation the failure mode of low temperature unstable combustion of the pyrotechnic igniter is examined while the random variables are introduced to establish the ignition nonlinear implicit function of the pyrotechnic igniter. The ignition display function of the pyrotechnic igniter is established by the Kriging model which avoids the repeated calculation of true limit state function values. This study provides an efficient approach to evaluate the ignition reliability of the pyrotechnic igniter and compared with the traditional Monte Carlo method to verify the accuracy of the results. Finally reliability-based sensitivity indices are presented to quantify the significance of random parameters. It is shown that the influence of the uncertainties can be precisely described and the diameter of the nozzle plays a dominant role in ignition reliability. Additionally ignition experiments of nozzles with different diameters were performed to verify the result of sensitivity. This can further support the detailed design of the pyrotechnic igniter

Transforming Europe into a climate neutral economy and society by 2050 requires extraordinary efforts and the mobilisation of all sectors and economic actors coupled with all the creative and brain power one can imagine. Each sector has to fundamentally rethink the way it operates to ensure it can be transformed towards this new net-zero paradigm without jeopardising other environmental and societal objectives both within the EU and globally. Given the scale of the transformation ahead our ability to meet climate neutrality targets directly depends on our ability to innovate. In this context Research & Innovation programmes have a key role to play and it is crucial to ensure they are fit for purpose and well equipped to support the next wave of breakthrough innovations that will be required to achieve climate neutrality in the EU and globally by 2050. The objective of this study is to contribute to these strategic planning discussions by not only identifying high-risk and high-impact climate mitigation solutions but most importantly look beyond individual solutions and consider how systemic interactions of climate change mitigation approaches can be integrated in the development of R&I agendas.
Numerical Simulation of the Transport and the Thermodynamic Properties of Imported Natural Gas Inected with Hydrogen in the Manifold

Blending hydrogen with natural gas (NG) is an efficient method for transporting hydrogen on a large scale at a low cost. The manifold at the NG initial station is an important piece of equipment that enables the blending of hydrogen with NG. However there are differences in the components and component contents of imported NG from different countries. The components of hydrogen-blended NG can affect the safety and efficiency of transportation through pipeline systems. Therefore numerical simulations were performed to investigate the blending process and changes in the thermodynamic properties of four imported NGs and hydrogen in the manifold. The higher the heavy hydrocarbon content in the imported NG the longer the distance required for the gas to mix uniformly with hydrogen in the pipeline. Hydrogen blending reduces the temperature and density of NG. The gas composition is the main factor affecting the molar calorific value of a gas mixture and hydrogen blending reduces the molar calorific value of NG. The larger the content of high-molar calorific components in the imported NG the higher the molar calorific value of the gas after hydrogen blending. Increasing both the temperature and hydrogen mixing ratio reduces the Joule-Thomson coefficient of the hydrogen-blended NG. The results of this study provide technical references for the transport of hydrogen-blended NG.
Optimization of Renewable Energy Supply Chain for Sustainable Hydrogen Energy Production from Plastic Waste

Disposing of plastic waste through burial or burning leads to air pollution issues while also contributing to gas emissions and plastic waste spreading underground into seas via springs. Henceforth this research aims at reducing plastic waste volume while simultaneously generating clean energy. Hydrogen energy is a promising fuel source that holds great value for humanity. However achieving clean hydrogen energy poses challenges including high costs and complex production processes especially on a national scale. This research focuses on Iran as a country capable of producing this energy examining the production process along with related challenges and the general supply chain. These challenges encompass selecting appropriate raw materials based on chosen technologies factory capacities storage methods and transportation flow among different provinces of the country. To deal with these challenges a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to optimize the hydrogen supply chain and make optimal decisions about the mentioned problems. The supply chain model estimates an average cost—IRR 4 million (approximately USD 8)—per kilogram of hydrogen energy that is available in syngas during the initial period; however subsequent periods may see costs decrease to IRR 1 million (approximately USD 2) factoring in return-on-investment rates.
Optimal Expansion of a Multi-domain Virtual Power Plant for Green Hydrogen Production to Decarbonise Seaborne Passenger Transportation

Many industrialised nations recently concentrated their focus on hydrogen as a viable option for the decarbonisation of fossil-intensive sectors including maritime transportation. A sustainable alternative to the conventional production of hydrogen based on fossil hydrocarbons is water electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources. This paper presents a detailed techno-economic optimisation model for sizing an electrolyser and a hydrogen storage embedded in a multi-domain virtual power plant to produce green hydrogen for seaborne passenger transportation. We base our numerical analysis on three years of historical data from a renewable-dominated 60/10 kV substation on the Danish island of Bornholm and on data for ferries to the mainland of Sweden. Our analysis shows that an electrolyser system serves as a valuable flexibility asset on the electrical demand side while supporting the thermal management of the district heating system and contributing to meeting the ferries hydrogen demand. With a sized electrolyser of 9.63 MW and a hydrogen storage of 1.45 t the hydrogen assets are able to take up a large share of the local excess electricity generation. The waste heat of the electrolyser delivers a significant share of 21.4% of the annual district heating demand. Moreover the substation can supply 26% of the hydrogen demand of the ferries from local resources. We further examine the sensitivity of the asset sizing towards investment costs electrolyser efficiency and hydrogen market prices.
Total Cost of Ownership Analysis of Fuel Cell Electric Bus with Different Hydrogen Supply Alternatives

In the transition to sustainable public transportation with zero-emission buses hydrogen fuel cell electric buses have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional diesel buses. However assessing their economic viability is crucial for widespread adoption. This study carries out a comprehensive examination encompassing both sensitivity and probabilistic analyses to assess the total cost of ownership (TCO) for the bus fleet and its corresponding infrastructure. It considers various hydrogen supply options encompassing on-site electrolysis on-site steam methane reforming and off-site hydrogen procurement with both gaseous and liquid delivery methods. The analysis covers critical cost elements encompassing bus acquisition costs infrastructure capital expenses and operational and maintenance costs for both buses and infrastructure. This paper conducted two distinct case studies: one involving a current small bus fleet of five buses and another focusing on a larger fleet set to launch in 2028. For the current small fleet the off-site gray hydrogen purchase with a gaseous delivery option is the most cost-effective among hydrogen alternatives but it still incurs a 26.97% higher TCO compared to diesel buses. However in the case of the expanded 2028 fleet the steam methane-reforming method without carbon capture emerges as the most likely option to attain the lowest TCO with a high probability of 99.5%. Additionally carbon emission costs were incorporated in response to the growing emphasis on environmental sustainability. The findings indicate that although diesel buses currently represent the most economical option in terms of TCO for the existing small fleet steam methane reforming with carbon capture presents a 69.2% likelihood of being the most cost-effective solution suggesting it is a strong candidate for cost efficiency for the expanded 2028 fleet. Notably substantial investments are required to increase renewable energy integration in the power grid and to enhance electrolyzer efficiency. These improvements are essential to make the electrolyzer a more competitive alternative to steam methane reforming. Overall the findings in this paper underscore the substantial impact of the hydrogen supply chain and carbon emission costs on the TCO of zero-emission buses.
Optimization of Emergency Alternatives for Hydrogen Leakage and Explosion Accidents Based on Improved VIKOR

Hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents have obvious dangers ambiguity of accident information and urgency of decision-making time. These characteristics bring challenges to the optimization of emergency alternatives for such accidents. Effective emergency decision making is crucial to mitigating the consequences of accidents and minimizing losses and can provide a vital reference for emergency management in the field of hydrogen energy. An improved VIKOR emergency alternatives optimization method is proposed based on the combination of hesitant triangular fuzzy set (HTFS) and the cumulative prospect theory (CPT) termed the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method. This method adopts the hesitant triangular fuzzy number to represent the decision information on the alternatives under the influence of multi-attributes constructs alternatives evaluation indicators and solves the indicator weights by using the deviation method. Based on CPT positive and negative ideal points were used as reference points to construct the prospect matrix which then utilized the VIKOR method to optimize the emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents. Taking an accident at a hydrogen refueling station as an example the effectiveness and rationality of the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method were verified by comparing with the existing three methods and conducting parameter sensitivity analysis. Research results show that the HTFS-CPT-VIKOR method effectively captures the limited psychological behavior characteristics of decision makers and enhances their ability to identify filter and judge ambiguous information making the decisionmaking alternatives more in line with the actual environment which provided strong support for the optimization of emergency alternatives for hydrogen leakage and explosion accidents.
Mitigating Emissions in the Global Steel Industry: Representing CCS and Hydrogen Technologies in Integrated Assessment Modelling

We conduct a techno-economic assessment of two low-emissions steel production technologies and evaluate their deployment in emissions mitigation scenarios utilizing the MIT Economic Projection and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model. Specifically we assess direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace with carbon capture and storage (DRI-EAF with CCS) and H2-based direct reduced iron-electric arc furnace (H2 DRI-EAF) which utilizes low carbon hydrogen to reduce CO2 emissions. Our techno-economic analysis based on the current state of technologies found that DRI-EAF with CCS increased costs ~7% relative to the conventional steel technology. H2 DRI-EAF increased costs by ~18% when utilizing Blue hydrogen and ~79% when using Green hydrogen. The exact pathways for hydrogen production in different world regions including the extent of CCS and hydrogen deployment in steelmaking are highly speculative at this point. In illustrative scenarios using EPPA we find that using base cost assumptions switching from BF-BOF to DRI-EAF or scrap EAF can provide significant emissions mitigation within steelmaking. With further reductions in the cost of advanced steelmaking we find a greater role for DRI-EAF with CCS whereas reductions in both the cost of advanced steelmaking and hydrogen production lead to a greater role for H2 DRI-EAF. Our findings can be used to help decision-makers assess various decarbonization options and design economically efficient pathways to reduce emissions in the steel industry. Our cost evaluation can also be used to inform other energy-economic and integrated assessment models designed to provide insights about future decarbonization pathways.
Thermodynamic Modelling and Optimisation of a Green Hydrogen-blended Syngas-fueled Integrated PV-SOFC System

Developing an effective energy transition roadmap is crucial in the face of global commitments to achieve net zero emissions. While renewable power generation systems are expanding challenges such as curtailments and grid constraints can lead to energy loss. To address this surplus electricity can be converted into green hydrogen serving as a key component in the energy transition. This research explores the use of renewable solar energy for powering a proton exchange membrane electrolyser to produce green hydrogen while a downdraft gasifier fed by municipal solid waste generates hydrogen-enriched syngas. The blended fuel is then used to feed a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. The study investigates the impact of hydrogen content on the performance of the fuel cell-based power plant from thermodynamics and exergoeconomic perspectives. Multiobjective optimisation using a genetic algorithm identifies optimal operating conditions for the system. Results show that blending hydrogen with syngas increases combined heat and power efficiency by up to 3% but also raises remarkably the unit product cost and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore the optimal values for hydrogen content current density temperatures and other parameters are determined. These findings contribute to the design and operation of an efficient and sustainable energy generation system.
Mid-century Net-zero Emissions Pathways for Japan: Potential Roles of Global Mitigation Scenarios in Informing National Decarbonisation Strategies

Japan has formulated a net-zero emissions target by 2050. Existing scenarios consistent with this target generally depend on carbon dioxide removal (CDR). In addition to domestic mitigation actions the import of low-carbon energy carriers such as hydrogen and synfuels and negative emissions credits are alternative options for achieving net-zero emissions in Japan. Although the potential and costs of these actions depend on global energy system transition characteristics which can potentially be informed by the global integrated assessment models they are not considered in current national scenario assessments. This study explores diverse options for achieving Japan's net-zero emissions target by 2050 using a national energy system model informed by international energy trade and emission credits costs estimated with a global energy system model. We found that demand-side electrification and approximately 100 Mt-CO2 per year of CDR implementation equivalent to approximately 10% of the current national CO2 emissions are essential across all net-zero emissions scenarios. Upscaling of domestically generated hydrogen-based alternative fuels and energy demand reduction can avoid further reliance on CDR. While imports of hydrogen-based energy carriers and emission credits are effective options annual import costs exceed the current cost of fossil fuel imports. In addition import dependency reaches approximately 50% in the scenario relying on hydrogen imports. This study highlights the importance of considering global trade when developing national net-zero emissions scenarios and describes potential new roles for global models.
Profitability Model of Green Hydrogen Production on an Existing Wind Power Plant Location

This paper presents a new economic profitability model for a power-to-gas plant producing green hydrogen at the site of an existing wind power plant injected into the gas grid. The model is based on a 42 MW wind power plant for which an optimal electrolyzer of 10 MW was calculated based on the 2500 equivalent full load hours per year and the projection of electricity prices. The model is calculated on an hourly level for all variables of the 25 years of the model. With the calculated breakeven electricity price of 74.23 EUR/MWh and the price of green hydrogen production of 99.44 EUR/MWh in 2045 the wind power plant would produce 22410 MWh of green hydrogen from 31% of its total electricity production. Green hydrogen injected into the gas system would reduce the level of CO2 emissions by 4482 tons. However with the projected prices of natural gas and electricity the wind power plant would cover only 20% of the income generated by the electricity delivered to the grid by producing green hydrogen. By calculating different scenarios in the model the authors concluded that the introduction of a premium subsidy model is necessary to accelerate deployment of electrolyzers at the site of an existing wind power plant in order to increase the wind farm profitability.
Energy Storage Strategy - Phase 2

This document is phase 2 of the energy storage strategy study and it covers the storage challenges of the energy transition. We start in section 3 by covering historical and current natural gas imports into the UK and what these could look like in the future. In section 4 we explore what demand for hydrogen could look like – this has a high level of uncertainty and future policy decisions will have significant impacts on hydrogen volumes and annual variations. We generated two hydrogen storage scenarios based on National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios and the Climate Change Committee’s Sixth Carbon Budget to assess the future need for hydrogen storage in the UK. We also looked at an extreme weather scenario resulting from an area of high-pressure settled over the British Isles resulting in very low ambient temperatures an unusually high demand for heating and almost no wind generation. In section 5 we investigate options for hydrogen storage and build on work previously carried out by SGN. We discuss the differences between the properties of hydrogen and natural gas and how this affects line pack and depletion of line pack. We discuss flexibility on the supply and demand side and how this can impact on hydrogen storage. We provide a summary table which compares the various options for storage. In section 5 we explore hydrogen trade and options for import and export. Using information from other innovation projects we also discuss production of hydrogen from nuclear power and the impact of hybrid appliances on gas demand for domestic heat. In section 7 we discuss the outputs from a stakeholder workshop with about 40 stakeholders across industry academia and government. The workshop covered UK gas storage strategy to date hydrogen demand and corresponding storage scenarios to 2050 including consideration of seasonal variation and storage options.

The global issue of climate change caused by humans and its inextricable linkage to our present and future energy demand presents the biggest challenge facing our globe. Hydrogen has been introduced as a new renewable energy resource. It is envisaged to be a crucial vector in the vast low-carbon transition to mitigate climate change minimize oil reliance reinforce energy security solve the intermittency of renewable energy resources and ameliorate energy performance in the transportation sector by using it in energy storage energy generation and transport sectors. Many technologies have been developed to generate hydrogen. The current paper presents a review of the current and developing technologies to produce hydrogen from fossil fuels and alternative resources like water and biomass. The results showed that reformation and gasification are the most mature and used technologies. However the weaknesses of these technologies include high energy consumption and high carbon emissions. Thermochemical water splitting biohydrogen and photo-electrolysis are long-term and clean technologies but they require more technical development and cost reduction to implement reformation technologies efficiently and on a large scale. A combination of water electrolysis with renewable energy resources is an ecofriendly method. Since hydrogen is viewed as a considerable game-changer for future fuels this paper also highlights the challenges facing hydrogen generation. Moreover an economic analysis of the technologies used to generate hydrogen is carried out in this study.
Economic Analysis of a Photovoltaic Hydrogen Refueling Station Based on Hydrogen Load

With the goal of achieving “carbon peak in 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2060” as clearly proposed by China the transportation sector will face long–term pressure on carbon emissions and the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will usher in a rapid growth period. However true “zero carbon” emissions cannot be separated from “green hydrogen”. Therefore it is of practical significance to explore the feasibility of renewable energy hydrogen production in the context of hydrogen refueling stations especially photovoltaic hydrogen production which is applied to hydrogen refueling stations (hereinafter referred to “photovoltaic hydrogen refueling stations”). This paper takes a hydrogen refueling station in Shanghai with a supply capacity of 500 kg/day as the research object. Based on a characteristic analysis of the hydrogen demand of the hydrogen refueling station throughout the day this paper studies and analyzes the system configuration operation strategy environmental effects and economics of the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station. It is estimated that when the hydrogen price is no less than 6.23 USD the photovoltaic hydrogen refueling station has good economic benefits. Additionally compared with the conventional hydrogen refueling station it can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1237.28 tons per year with good environmental benefits.
Environmental Assessment of Replacing Fossil Fuels with Hydrogen for Motorised Equipment in the Mining Sector

To achieve the European milestone of climate neutrality by 2050 the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries is essential. In 2022 global energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 0.9% or 321 Mt reaching a peak of over 36.8 Gt. A large amount of these emissions is the result of fossil fuel usage in the motorised equipment used in mining. Heavy diesel vehicles like excavators wheel loaders and dozers are responsible for an estimated annual CO2 emissions of 400 Mt of CO2 accounting for approximately 1.1% of global CO2 emissions. In addition exhaust gases of CO2 and NOx endanger the personnel’s health in all mining operations especially in underground environments. To tackle these environmental concerns and enhance environmental health extractive industries are focusing on replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels of low or zero CO2 emissions. In mining the International Council on Mining and Metals has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. Of the various alternative fuels hydrogen (H2 ) has seen a considerable rise in popularity in recent years as H2 combustion accounts for zero CO2 emissions due to the lack of carbon in the burning process. When combusted with pure oxygen it also accounts for zero NOx formation and near-zero emissions overall. To this end this study aims to examine the overall environmental performance of H2 -powered motorised equipment compared to conventional fossil fuel-powered equipment through Life Cycle Assessment. The assessment was conducted using the commercial software Sphera LCA for Experts following the conventionally used framework established by ISO 14040:2006 and 14044:2006/A1:2018 and the International Life Cycle Data Handbook consisting of (1) the goal and scope definition (2) the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) preparation (3) the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and (4) the interpretation of the results. The results will offer an overview to support decision-makers in the sector.
Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control

This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation operating and maintenance costs as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical their levels of degradation in general will not be. Thus over time each stack can present a different behavior. Therefore the power control strategy cannot be based on an equal distribution according to the nominal power of each stack. On the contrary the control algorithm should take advantage of the characteristics of the multi-stack FC concept distributing operation across all the stacks regarding their capacity to produce power/energy and optimizing the overall performance.

Cryogenic and Ambient Gaseous Hydrogen Blowdown with Discharge Line Effects

The present work performed within the PRESLHY EC-project presents a simplified 1-d transient modelling methodology to account for discharge line effects during blowdown. The current formulation includes friction extra resistance area change and heat transfer through the discharge line walls and is able to calculate the mass flow rate and distribution of all physical variables along the discharge line. Choked flow at any time during the transient is calculated using the Possible Impossible Flow (PIF) algorithm. Hydrogen single phase physical properties and vapour-liquid equilibrium are calculated using the Helmholtz Free Energy (HFE) formulation. Homogeneous Equilibrium Mixture (HEM) model is used for two-phase physical properties. Validation is performed against the new experiments with compressed gaseous hydrogen performed at the DISCHA facility in the framework of PRESLHY (200 bar ambient and cryogenic initial tank temperature 77 K and 4 nozzle diameters 0.5 1 2 and 4 mm) and an older experiment at 900 bar ambient temperature and 2 mm nozzle. Predictions are compared against measured data from the experiments and the relative importance of line heat transfer compared to flow resistance is analysed.
Injection of Gaseous Hydrogen into a Natural Gas Pipeline

The injection of pure hydrogen at a T-junction into a horizontal pipe carrying natural gas is analysed computationally to understand the influence of blending and pipe geometry (diameter ratio various 90 orientations) on mixing for a target of 4.8e20% volume fraction hydrogen blend. The strongly inhomogeneous distribution of hydrogen within the pipe flow and on the pipe walls could indicate the location of potential pipe material degradation including embrittlement effects. The low molecular mass of hydrogen reduces the penetration of a side-branch flow and increases the buoyancy forces leading to stratification with high hydrogen concentrations on the upper pipe surface downstream of the branch. Top-side injection leads to the hydrogen concentration remaining >40% for up to 8 pipe diameters from the injection point for volumetric dilutions ( D) less than 30%. Under-side injection promotes mixing within the flow interior and reduces wall concentration at the lower surface compared to top-side injection. The practical implications for these results in terms of mixing requirements and the contrasting constraint of codes of practice and energy demands are discussed.
Hydrogen-Assisted Cracking in GMA Welding of High-Strength Structural Steel—A New Look into This Issue at Narrow Groove

Modern arc processes such as the modified spray arc (Mod. SA) have been developed for gas metal arc welding of high-strength structural steels with which even narrow weld seams can be welded. High-strength joints are subjected to increasingly stringent requirements in terms of welding processing and the resulting component performance. In the present work this challenge is to be met by clarifying the influences on hydrogen-assisted cracking (HAC) in a high-strength structural steel S960QL. Adapted samples analogous to the self-restraint TEKKEN test are used and analyzed with respect to crack formation microstructure diffusible hydrogen concentration and residual stresses. The variation of the seam opening angle of the test seams is between 30° and 60°. To prevent HAC the effectiveness of a dehydrogenation heat treatment (DHT) from the welding heat is investigated. As a result the weld metals produced at reduced weld opening angle show slightly higher hydrogen concentrations on average. In addition increased micro- as well as macro-crack formation can be observed on these weld metal samples. On all samples without DHT cracks in the root notch occur due to HAC which can be prevented by DHT immediately after welding.
Alternative-energy-vehicles Deployment Delivers Climate, Air Quality, and Health Co-benefits when Coupled with Decarbonizing Power Generation in China

China is the world’s largest carbon emitter and suffers from severe air pollution which results in approximately one million premature deaths/year. Alternative energy vehicles (AEVs) (electric hydrogen fuel cell and natural gas vehicles) can reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. However climate air quality and health benefits of AEVs powered with deeply decarbonized power generation are poorly quantified. Here we quantitatively estimate the air quality health carbon emission and economic benefits of replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with various AEVs. We find co-benefits increase dramatically as the electricity grid decarbonizes and hydrogen is produced from non-fossil fuels. Relative to 2015 a conversion to AEVs using largely non-fossil power can reduce air pollution and associated premature mortalities and years of life lost by 329000 persons/year and 1611000 life years/year. Thus maximizing climate air quality and health benefits of AEV deployment in China requires rapid decarbonization of the power system.
Influence of Cs Promoter on Ethanol Steam-Reforming Selectivity of Pt/m-ZrO2 Catalysts at Low Temperature

The decarboxylation pathway in ethanol steam reforming ultimately favors higher selectivity to hydrogen over the decarbonylation mechanism. The addition of an optimized amount of Cs to Pt/m-ZrO2 catalysts increases the basicity and promotes the decarboxylation route converting ethanol to mainly H2 CO2 and CH4 at low temperature with virtually no decarbonylation being detected. This offers the potential to feed the product stream into a conventional methane steam reformer for the production of hydrogen with higher selectivity. DRIFTS and the temperature-programmed reaction of ethanol steam reforming as well as fixed bed catalyst testing revealed that the addition of just 2.9% Cs was able to stave off decarbonylation almost completely by attenuating the metallic function. This occurs with a decrease in ethanol conversion of just 16% relative to the undoped catalyst. In comparison with our previous work with Na this amount is—on an equivalent atomic basis—just 28% of the amount of Na that is required to achieve the same effect. Thus Cs is a much more efficient promoter than Na in facilitating decarboxylation.
A New Energy System Based on Biomass Gasification for Hydrogen and Power Production

In this paper a new gasification system is developed for the three useful outputs of electricity heat and hydrogen and reported for practical energy applications. The study also investigates the composition of syngas leaving biomass gasifier. The composition of syngas is represented by the fractions of hydrogen carbon dioxide carbon monoxide and water. The integrated energy system comprises of an entrained flow gasifier a Cryogenic Air Separation (CAS) unit a double-stage Rankine cycle Water Gas Shift Reactor (WGSR) a combined gas–steam power cycle and a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. The whole integrated system is modeled in the Aspen plus 9.0 excluding the PEM electrolyzer which is modeled in Engineering Equation Solver (EES). A comprehensive parametric investigation is conducted by varying numerous parameters like biomass flow rate steam flow rate air input flow rate combustion reactor temperature and power supplied to the electrolyzer. The system is designed in a way to supply the power produced by the steam Rankine cycle to the PEM electrolyzer for hydrogen production. The overall energy efficiency is obtained to be 53.7% where the exergy efficiency is found to be 45.5%. Furthermore the effect of the biomass flow rate is investigated on the various system operational parameters.
Investigation into the Cross-sensitivity of Domestic Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Hydrogen

Preliminary research suggests domestic carbon monoxide detectors with an electrochemical sensor are approximately 10 -20% sensitive to hydrogen atmospheres in their factory configuration. That is the display on a carbon monoxide detector would give a carbon monoxide reading of approximately 10-20% of the concentration of hydrogen it is exposed to. Current British standards require detectors to sound an alarm within three minutes when subjected to a continuous concentration of ≥ 300 ppm CO. This would equate to a concentration of 1500-3000 ppm hydrogen in air or approximately 3.75 – 7% %LEL. The current evacuation criteria for a natural gas leak in a domestic property is 20 %LEL indicating that standard carbon monoxide detectors could be used as cheap and reliable early warning systems for hydrogen leaks. Given the wide use of carbon monoxide detectors and the affordability of the devices the use of carbon monoxide detectors for hydrogen detection is of particular interest as the UK drives towards energy decarbonisation. Experiments to determine the exact sensitivity of a range of the most common domestic carbon monoxide detectors have been completed by DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing. Determining the effects of repeated exposure to varying concentrations of hydrogen in air on the sensitivity of electrochemical sensors allows recommendations to be made on their adoption as hydrogen detectors. Changing the catalysts used within the electrochemical cell would improve the sensitivity to hydrogen however simply calibrating the sensor to report a concentration of hydrogen rather than carbon monoxide would represent no additional costs to manufacturers. Having determined the suitability of such sensors at an early stage; the technology can then be linked with other technological developments required for the change to hydrogen for domestic heating (e.g. change in metering equipment and appliances). This report finds that from five simple and widely available carbon monoxide detectors the lowest sensitivity to hydrogen measured at the concentration required to sound an alarm within three minutes was approximately 10%. It was also discovered that as the hydrogen concentration was increased over the range tested the sensitivity to hydrogen also increased. It is proposed that coupling these devices with other elements of the domestic gas system would allow actions such as remote meter isolation or automatic warning signals sent to response services would provide a reliable and inherently safe system for protecting occupants as gas networks transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect it is noted that wireless linking of smoke and heat detectors for domestic application is already widely available in low-cost devices. This could be extended to CO detectors adapted for hydrogen use.
Renewable Hydrogen Implementations for Combined Energy Storage, Transportation and Stationary Applications

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the potential of hydrogen obtained from renewable sources for energy generation and storage systems. The first part of analysis will address such issues as various methods of green hydrogen production storage and transportation. The review of hydrogen generation methods will be followed by the critical analysis and the selection of production method. This selection is justified by the results of the comparative research on alternative green hydrogen generation technologies with focus on their environmental impacts and costs. The comparative analysis includes the biomass-based methods as well as water splitting and photo-catalysis methods while water electrolysis is taken as a benchmark. Hydrogen storage and transportation issues will be further discussed in purpose to form the list of recommended solutions. In the second part of the paper the technology readiness and technical feasibility for joint hydrogen applications will be analysed. This will include the energy storage and production systems based on renewable hydrogen in combination with hydrogen usage in mobility systems as well as the stationary applications in buildings such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants or fuel cell electric generators. Based on the analysis of the selected case studies the author will discuss the role of hydrogen for the carbon emission reduction with the stress on the real value of carbon footprint of hydrogen depending on the gas source storage transportation and applications.
