Flow Loop Test for Hydrogen

National Grid (NG) needs to understand the implications that a hydrogen rich gas mix may have on the existing pipeline network. The primary network consists extensively of X52 steel pipe sections welded together using girth welds. Different welding specifications that have been used in the past 40 years and girth welds with different specifications may behave differently when coming into contact with hydrogen gas.
The aim of the flow loop test programme is to begin to evaluate the durability of pipeline materials in the context of future proofing of gas grid service where the gas mix may include a significant proportion of hydrogen. One specific objective is to investigate the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement of a conventional steel (X52) with commonly used girth welds. The primary concern is that the phenomenon of hydrogen embrittlement may cause unexpected or early failure mechanisms especially in older pipe sections with less stringent girth weld specifications.

Hydrogen Uptake and Embrittlement of Carbon Steels in Various Environments

To avoid failures due to hydrogen embrittlement it is important to know the amount of hydrogen absorbed by certain steel grades under service conditions. When a critical hydrogen content is reached the material properties begin to deteriorate. The hydrogen uptake and embrittlement of three different carbon steels (API 5CT L80 Type 1 P110 and 42CrMo4) was investigated in autoclave tests with hydrogen gas (H2) at elevated pressure and in ambient pressure tests with hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2 gas with a pressure of up to 100 bar resulted in an overall low but still detectable hydrogen absorption which did not cause any substantial hydrogen embrittlement in specimens under a constant load of 90% of the specified minimum yield strength (SMYS). The amount of hydrogen absorbed under conditions with H2S was approximately one order of magnitude larger than under conditions with H2 gas. The high hydrogen content led to failures of the 42CrMo4 and P110 specimens.
Kinetic Model of Incipient Hydride Formation in Zr Clad under Dynamic Oxide Growth Conditions

The formation of elongated zirconium hydride platelets during corrosion of nuclear fuel clad is linked to its premature failure due to embrittlement and delayed hydride cracking. Despite their importance however most existing models of hydride nucleation and growth in Zr alloys are phenomenological and lack sufficient physical detail to become predictive under the variety of conditions found in nuclear reactors during operation. Moreover most models ignore the dynamic nature of clad oxidation which requires that hydrogen transport and precipitation be considered in a scenario where the oxide layer is continuously growing at the expense of the metal substrate. In this paper we perform simulations of hydride formation in Zr clads with a moving oxide/metal boundary using a stochastic kinetic diffusion/reaction model parameterized with state-of-the-art defect and solute energetics. Our model uses the solutions of the hydrogen diffusion problem across an increasingly-coarse oxide layer to define boundary conditions for the kinetic simulations of hydrogen penetration precipitation and dissolution in the metal clad. Our method captures the spatial dependence of the problem by discretizing all spatial derivatives using a stochastic finite difference scheme. Our results include hydride number densities and size distributions along the radial coordinate of the clad for the first 1.6 h of evolution providing a quantitative picture of hydride incipient nucleation and growth under clad service conditions.
Optimal Operation of a Microgrid with Hydrogen Storage Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

Microgrid with hydrogen storage is an effective way to integrate renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. This paper proposes an optimal operation method for a microgrid with hydrogen storage. The electrolyzer efficiency characteristic model is established based on the linear interpolation method. The optimal operation model of microgrid is incorporated with the electrolyzer efficiency characteristic model. The sequential decision-making problem of the optimal operation of microgrid is solved by a deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce about 5% of the operation cost of the microgrid compared with traditional algorithms and has a certain generalization capability.

Improving Hydrogen Embrittlement Resistance of Hot-Stamped 1500 MPa Steel Parts That Have Undergone a Q&P Treatment by the Design of Retained Austenite and Martensite Matrix

Hydrogen embrittlement is one of the largest obstacles against the commercialisation of ultra-high strength quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steels with ultimate tensile strength over 1500 MPa including the hot stamped steel parts that have undergone a Q&P treatment. In this work the influence of partitioning temperature on hydrogen embrittlement of ultra-high strength Q&P steels is studied by pre-charged tensile tests with both dog-bone and notched samples. It is found that hydrogen embrittlement resistance is enhanced by the higher partitioning temperature. Then the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism is analysed in terms of hydrogen retained austenite and martensite matrix. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) shows that the hydrogen trapping properties are similar in the Q&P steels which cannot explain the enhancement of hydrogen embrittlement resistance. On the contrary it is found that the relatively low retained austenite stability after the higher temperature partitioning ensures more sufficient TRIP effect before hydrogen-induced fracture. Additionally dislocation recovery and solute carbon depletion at the higher partitioning temperature can reduce the flow stress of the martensite matrix improving its intrinsic toughness and reducing its hydrogen sensitivity both of which result in the higher hydrogen embrittlement resistance.
Partitioning of Interstitial Segregants during Decohesion: A DFT Case Study of the Σ3 Symmetric Tilt Grain Boundary in Ferritic Steel

The effect of hydrogen atoms at grain boundaries in metals is usually detrimental to the cohesion of the interface. This effect can be quantified in terms of the strengthening energy which is obtained following the thermodynamic model of Rice and Wang. A critical component of this model is the bonding or solution energy of the atoms to the free surfaces that are created during decohesion. At a grain boundary in a multicomponent system it is not immediately clear how the different species would partition and distribute on the cleaved free surfaces. In this work it is demonstrated that the choice of partitioning pattern has a significant effect on the predicted influence of H and C on grain boundary cohesion. To this end the Σ3(112)[11¯0] symmetric tilt grain boundary in bcc Fe with different contents of interstitial C and H was studied taking into account all possible distributions of the elements as well as surface diffusion effects. H as a single element has a negative influence on grain boundary cohesion independent of the details of the H distribution. C on the other hand can act both ways enhancing or reducing the cohesion of the interface. The effect of mixed H and C compositions depends on the partition pattern. However the general trend is that the number of detrimental cases increases with increasing H content. A decomposition of the strengthening energy into chemical and mechanical contributions shows that the elastic contribution dominates at high C contents while the chemical contribution sets the trend for high H contents.
Recent Studies of Hydrogen Embrittlement in Structural Materials

Mechanical properties of metals and their alloys are most often determined by interstitial atoms. Hydrogen as one common interstitial element is often found to degrade the fracture behavior and lead to premature or catastrophic failure in a wide range of materials known as hydrogen embrittlement. This topic has been studied for more than a century yet the basic mechanisms of such degradation remain in dispute for many metallic systems. This work attempts to link experimentally and theoretically between failure caused by the presence of hydrogen and second phases lattice distortion and deformation levels.
Scale-up of Milling in a 100 L Device for Processing of TiFeMn Alloy for Hydrogen Storage Applications: Procedure and characterization

In this work the mechanical milling of a FeTiMn alloy for hydrogen storage purposes was performed in an industrial milling device. The TiFe hydride is interesting from the technological standpoint because of the abundance and the low cost of its constituent elements Ti and Fe as well as its high volumetric hydrogen capacity. However TiFe is difficult to activate usually requiring a thermal treatment above 400 °C. A TiFeMn alloy milled for just 10 min in a 100 L industrial milling device showed excellent hydrogen storage properties without any thermal treatment. The as-milled TiFeMn alloy did not need any activation procedure and showed fast kinetic behavior and good cycling stability. Microstructural and morphological characterization of the as-received and as-milled TiFeMn alloys revealed that the material presents reduced particle and crystallite sizes even after such short time of milling. The refined microstructure of the as-milled TiFeMn is deemed to account for the improved hydrogen absorption-desorption properties.
Concepts for Improving Hydrogen Storage in Nanoporous Materials

Hydrogen storage in nanoporous materials has been attracting a great deal of attention in recent years as high gravimetric H2 capacities exceeding 10 wt% in some cases can be achieved at 77 K using materials with particularly high surface areas. However volumetric capacities at low temperatures and both gravimetric and volumetric capacities at ambient temperature need to be improved before such adsorbents become practically viable. This article therefore discusses approaches to increasing the gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen storage capacities of nanoporous materials and maximizing the usable capacity of a material between the upper storage and delivery pressures. In addition recent advances in machine learning and data science provide an opportunity to apply this technology to the search for new materials for hydrogen storage. The large number of possible component combinations and substitutions in various porous materials including Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is ideally suited to a machine learning approach; so this is also discussed together with some new material types that could prove useful in the future for hydrogen storage applications.

Hydrogen storage is a materials science challenge because for all six storage methods currently being investigated materials with either a strong interaction with hydrogen or without any reaction are needed. Besides conventional storage methods i.e. high pressure gas cylinders and liquid hydrogen the physisorption of hydrogen on materials with a high specific surface area hydrogen intercalation in metals and complex hydrides and storage of hydrogen based on metals and water are reviewed.
Hydrogen Storage Behavior of Nanocrystalline and Amorphous Mg–Ni–Cu–La Alloys

Alloying and structural modification are two effective ways to enhance the hydrogen storage kinetics and decrease the thermal stability of Mg and Mg-based alloys. In order to enhance the characteristics of Mg2Ni-type alloys Cu and La were added to an Mg2Ni-type alloy and the sample alloys (Mg24Ni10Cu2)100−xLax (x = 0 5 10 15 20) were prepared by melt spinning. The influences of La content and spinning rate on the gaseous and electrochemical hydrogen storage properties of the sample alloys were explored in detail. The structural identification carried out by XRD and TEM indicates that the main phase of the alloys is Mg2Ni and the addition of La results in the formation of the secondary phases LaMg3 and La2Mg17. The as-spun alloys have amorphous and nanocrystalline structures and the addition of La promotes glass formation. The electrochemical properties examined by an automatic galvanostatic system show that the samples possess a good activation capability and achieve their maximal discharge capacities within three cycles. The discharge potential characteristics were vastly ameliorated by melt spinning and La addition. The discharge capacities of the samples achieve their maximal values as the La content changes and the discharge capacities always increase with increasing spinning rate. The addition of La leads to a decline in hydrogen absorption capacity but it can effectively enhance the rate of hydrogen absorption. The addition of La and melt spinning significantly increase the hydrogen desorption rate due to the reduced activation energy.
Hydrogen Storage Mechanism in Sodium-Based Graphene Nanoflakes: A Density Functional Theory Study

Carbon materials such as graphene nanoflakes carbon nanotubes and fullerene can be widely used to store hydrogen and doping these materials with lithium (Li) generally increases their H2 -storage densities. Unfortunately Li is expensive; therefore alternative metals are required to realize a hydrogen-based society. Sodium (Na) is an inexpensive element with chemical properties that are similar to those of lithium. In this study we used density functional theory to systematically investigate how hydrogen molecules interact with Na-doped graphene nanoflakes. A graphene nanoflake (GR) was modeled by a large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon composed of 37 benzene rings with GR-Na-(H2 )n and GR-Na+ -(H2 )n (n = 0–12) clusters used as hydrogen storage systems. Data obtained for the Na system were compared with those of the Li system. The single-H2 GR-Li and GR-Na systems (n = 1) exhibited binding energies (per H2 molecule) of 3.83 and 2.72 kcal/mol respectively revealing that the Li system has a high hydrogen-storage ability. This relationship is reversed from n = 4 onwards; the Na systems exhibited larger or similar binding energies for n = 4–12 than the Li-systems. The present study strongly suggests that Na can be used as an alternative metal to Li in H2 -storage applications. The H2 -storage mechanism in the Na system is also discussed based on the calculated results.

Metal hydrides are known as a potential efficient low-risk option for high-density hydrogen storage since the late 1970s. In this paper the present status and the future perspectives of the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage are discussed. Since the early 1990s interstitial metal hydrides are known as base materials for Ni – metal hydride rechargeable batteries. For hydrogen storage metal hydride systems have been developed in the 2010s [1] for use in emergency or backup power units i. e. for stationary applications.<br/>With the development and completion of the first submarines of the U212 A series by HDW (now Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems) in 2003 and its export class U214 in 2004 the use of metal hydrides for hydrogen storage in mobile applications has been established with new application fields coming into focus.<br/>In the last decades a huge number of new intermetallic and partially covalent hydrogen absorbing compounds has been identified and partly more partly less extensively characterized.<br/>In addition based on the thermodynamic properties of metal hydrides this class of materials gives the opportunity to develop a new hydrogen compression technology. They allow the direct conversion from thermal energy into the compression of hydrogen gas without the need of any moving parts. Such compressors have been developed and are nowadays commercially available for pressures up to 200 bar. Metal hydride based compressors for higher pressures are under development. Moreover storage systems consisting of the combination of metal hydrides and high-pressure vessels have been proposed as a realistic solution for on-board hydrogen storage on fuel cell vehicles.<br/>In the frame of the “Hydrogen Storage Systems for Mobile and Stationary Applications” Group in the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Task 32 “Hydrogen-based energy storage” different compounds have been and will be scaled-up in the near future and tested in the range of 500 g to several hundred kg for use in hydrogen storage applications.
Fuelling the Hydrogen Economy: Scale-up of an Integrated Formic Acid-to-power System

Transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable and green energy sources in mobile applications is a difficult challenge and demands sustained and highly multidisciplinary efforts in R&D. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) offer several advantages over more conventional energy storage solutions but have not been yet demonstrated at scale. Herein we describe the development of an integrated and compact 25 kW formic acid-to-power system by a team of BSc and MSc students. We highlight a number of key engineering challenges encountered during scale-up of the technology and discuss several aspects commonly overlooked by academic researchers. Conclusively we provide a critical outlook and suggest a number of developmental areas currently inhibiting further implementation of the technology.

Expectations for energy storage are high but large-scale underground hydrogen storage in porous media (UHSP) remains largely untested. This article identifies and discusses the scientific challenges of hydrogen storage in porous media for safe and efficient large-scale energy storage to enable a global hydrogen economy. To facilitate hydrogen supply on the scales required for a zero-carbon future it must be stored in porous geological formations such as saline aquifers and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs. Large-scale UHSP offers the much-needed capacity to balance inter-seasonal discrepancies between demand and supply decouple energy generation from demand and decarbonise heating and transport supporting decarbonisation of the entire energy system. Despite the vast opportunity provided by UHSP the maturity is considered low and as such UHSP is associated with several uncertainties and challenges. Here the safety and economic impacts triggered by poorly understood key processes are identified such as the formation of corrosive hydrogen sulfide gas hydrogen loss due to the activity of microbes or permeability changes due to geochemical interactions impacting on the predictability of hydrogen flow through porous media. The wide range of scientific challenges facing UHSP are outlined to improve procedures and workflows for the hydrogen storage cycle from site selection to storage site operation. Multidisciplinary research including reservoir engineering chemistry geology and microbiology more complex than required for CH4 or CO2 storage is required in order to implement the safe efficient and much needed large-scale commercial deployment of UHSP.
Radiation Damage of Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Studied by Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy—A Review

Safe and long term operation of nuclear reactors is one of the most discussed challenges in nuclear power engineering. The radiation degradation of nuclear design materials limits the operational lifetime of all nuclear installations or at least decreases its safety margin. This paper is a review of experimental PALS/PLEPS studies of different nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels investigated over last twenty years in our laboratories. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) via its characteristics (lifetimes of positrons and their intensities) provides useful information about type and density of radiation induced defects. The new results obtained on neutron-irradiated and hydrogen ions implanted German steels were compared to those from the previous studies with the aim to evaluate different processes (neutron flux/fluence thermal treatment or content of selected alloying elements) to the microstructural changes of neutron irradiated RPV steel specimens. The possibility of substitution of neutron treatment (connected to new defects creation) via hydrogen ions implantation was analyzed as well. The same materials exposed to comparable displacement damage (dpa) introduced by neutrons and accelerated hydrogen ions shown that in the results interpretation the effect of hydrogen as a vacancy-stabilizing gas must be considered too. This approach could contribute to future studies of nuclear fission/fusion design steels treated by high levels of neutron irradiation.
An Overview of the Recent Advances of Additive‐Improved Mg(BH4)2 for Solid‐State Hydrogen Storage Material

Recently hydrogen (H2) has emerged as a superior energy carrier that has the potential to replace fossil fuel. However storing H2 under safe and operable conditions is still a challenging process due to the current commercial method i.e. H2 storage in a pressurised and liquified state which requires extremely high pressure and extremely low temperature. To solve this problem re‐ search on solid‐state H2 storage materials is being actively conducted. Among the solid‐state H2 storage materials borohydride is a potential candidate for H2 storage owing to its high gravimetric capacity (majority borohydride materials release >10 wt% of H2). Mg(BH4)2 which is included in the borohydride family shows promise as a good H2 storage material owing to its high gravimetric capacity (14.9 wt%). However its practical application is hindered by high thermal decomposition temperature (above 300 °C) slow sorption kinetics and poor reversibility. Currently the general research on the use of additives to enhance the H2 storage performance of Mg(BH4)2 is still under investigation. This article reviews the latest research on additive‐enhanced Mg(BH4)2 and its impact on the H2 storage performance. The future prospect and challenges in the development of additive‐ enhanced Mg(BH4)2 are also discussed in this review paper. To the best of our knowledge this is the first systematic review paper that focuses on the additive‐enhanced Mg(BH4)2 for solid‐state H2 storage.
Irreproducibility in Hydrogen Storage Material Research

The storage of hydrogen in materials has received a significant amount of attention in recent years because this approach is widely thought to be one of the most promising solutions to the problem of storing hydrogen for use as an alternative energy carrier in a safe compact and affordable form. However there have been a number of high profile cases in which erroneous or irreproducible data have been published. Meanwhile the irreproducibility of research results in a wide range of disciplines has been the subject of an increasing amount of attention due to problems with some of the data in the literature. In this Perspective we provide a summary of the problems that have affected hydrogen storage material research. We also discuss the reasons behind them and possible ways of reducing the likelihood of further problems occurring in the future.
Reversible Ammonia-based and Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers for High-density Hydrogen Storage: Recent Progress

Liquid hydrogen carriers are considered to be attractive hydrogen storage options because of their ease of integration into existing chemical transportation infrastructures when compared with liquid or compressed hydrogen. The development of such carriers forms part of the work of the International Energy Agency Task 32: Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage. Here we report the state-of-the-art for ammonia-based and liquid organic hydrogen carriers with a particular focus on the challenge of ensuring easily regenerable high-density hydrogen storage.
Improved Overall Hydrogen Storage Properties of a CsH and KH Co-doped Mg(NH2)2/2LiH System by Forming Mixed Amides of Li–K and Cs–Mg

A CsH and KH co-doped Mg(NH2)2/2LiH composite was prepared with a composition of Mg(NH2)2/2LiH–(0.08 − x)CsH–xKH and the hydrogen storage characteristics was systematically investigated. The results showed that the presence of KH further improved the reaction thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen storage in a CsH-containing Mg(NH2)2/2LiH system. A sample with 0.04 mol CsH and 0.04 mol KH had optimal hydrogen storage performance; its dehydrogenation could proceed at 130 °C and hydrogenation at 120 °C with 4.89 wt% of hydrogen storage capacity. At 130 °C a 25-fold increase in the dehydrogenation rate was achieved for the CsH and KH co-doped sample. More importantly the CsH and KH co-doped sample also had good cycling stability because more than 97% of the hydrogen storage capacity (4.34 wt%) remained for theMg(NH2)2/2LiH–0.04CsH–0.04KH sample after 30 cycles. A structural characterization revealed that added CsH and KH participated in the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions by reversibly forming mixed amides of Li–K and Cs–Mg which caused the improved hydrogen storage thermodynamics and kinetics.
Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon-Based Composites for Hydrogen Storage Application

Recent development shows that carbon-based composites are proving to be the most promising materials in hydrogen energy production storage and conversion applications. In this study composites of the copper-based metal-organic framework with different ratios of graphite oxide have been prepared for hydrogen storage application. The developed materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) gravimetric thermal analysis (TGA) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and BET. The newly developed composites have an improved crystalline structure and an increased surface area. The results of the experiment showed that the composite material MOF/GO 20% can store 6.12% of hydrogen at −40 ◦C.

The European Union is aiming at reaching greenhouse gas (GHG) emission neutrality in 2050. Austria’s current greenhouse gas emissions are 80 million t/year. Renewable Energy (REN) contributes 32% to Austria’s total energy consumption. To decarbonize energy consumption a substantial increase in energy generation from renewable energy is required. This increase will add to the seasonality of energy supply and amplifies the seasonality in energy demand. In this paper the seasonality of energy supply and demand in a Net-Zero Scenario are analyzed for Austria and requirements for hydrogen storage derived. We looked into the potential usage of hydrogen in Austria and the economics of hydrogen generation and technology and market developments to assess the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). Then we cover the energy consumption in Austria followed by the REN potential. The results show that incremental potential of up to 140 TWh for hydropower photovoltaic (PV) and wind exists in Austria. Hydropower generation and PV is higher in summer- than in wintertime while wind energy leads to higher energy generation in wintertime. The largest incremental potential is PV with agrivoltaic systems significantly increasing the area amenable for PV compared with PV usage only. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCV) use energy more efficiently than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars; however the use of hydrogen for electricity generation significantly decreases the efficiency due to electricity–hydrogen– electricity conversion. The increase in REN use and the higher demand for energy in Austria in wintertime require seasonal storage of energy. We developed three scenarios Externally Dependent Scenario (EDS) Balanced Energy Scenario (BES) or Self-Sustained Scenario (SSS) for Austria. The EDS scenario assumes significant REN import to Austria whereas the SSS scenario relies on REN generation within Austria. The required hydrogen storage would be 10.82 bn m3 for EDS 13.34 bn m3 for BES and 18.69 bn m3 for SSS. Gas and oil production in Austria and the presence of aquifers indicates that sufficient storage capacity might be available. Significant technology development is required to be able to implement hydrogen as an energy carrier and to balance seasonal energy demand and supply.
Empowering Hydrogen Storage Properties of Haeckelite Monolayers via Metal Atom Functionalization

Using hydrogen as an energy carrier requires new technological solutions for its onboard storage. The exploration of two-dimensional (2D) materials for hydrogen storage technologies has been motivated by their open structures which facilitates fast hydrogen kinetics. Herein the hydrogen storage properties of lightweight metal functionalized r57 haeckelite sheets are studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. H2 molecules are adsorbed on pristine r57 via physisorption. The hydrogen storage capacity of r57 is improved by decorating it with alkali and alkaline-earth metals. In addition the in-plane substitution of r57 carbons with boron atoms (B@r57) both prevents the clustering of metals on the surface of 2D material and increases the hydrogen storage capacity by improving the adsorption thermodynamics of hydrogen molecules. Among the studied compounds B@r57-Li4 with its 10.0 wt% H2 content and 0.16 eV/H2 hydrogen binding energy is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage applications. A further investigation as based on the calculated electron localization functions atomic charges and electronic density of states confirm the electrostatic nature of interactions between the H2 molecules and the protruding metal atoms on 2D haeckelite sheets. All in all this work contributes to a better understanding of pure carbon and B-doped haeckelites for hydrogen storage.
Mechanical Properties and Hydrogen Embrittlement of Laser-Surface Melted AISI 430 Ferritic Stainless Steel

Hydrogen was doped in austenitic stainless steel (ASS) 316L tensile samples produced by the laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF) technique. For this aim an electrochemical method was conducted under a high current density of 100 mA/cm2 for three days to examine its sustainability under extreme hydrogen environments at ambient temperatures. The chemical composition of the starting powders contained a high amount of Ni approximately 12.9 wt.% as a strong austenite stabilizer. The tensile tests disclosed that hydrogen charging caused a minor reduction in the elongation to failure (approximately 3.5% on average) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS; approximately 2.1% on average) of the samples using a low strain rate of 1.2 × 10−4 s−1. It was also found that an increase in the strain rate from 1.2 × 10−4 s−1 to 4.8 × 10−4 s−1 led to a reduction of approximately 3.6% on average for the elongation to failure and 1.7% on average for UTS in the pre-charged samples. No trace of martensite was detected in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the fractured samples thanks to the high Ni content which caused a minor reduction in UTS × uniform elongation (UE) (GPa%) after the H charging. Considerable surface tearing was observed for the pre-charged sample after the tensile deformation. Additionally some cracks were observed to be independent of the melt pool boundaries indicating that such boundaries cannot necessarily act as a suitable area for the crack propagation.
Potential Liquid-Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) Systems: A Review on Recent Progress

The depletion of fossil fuels and rising global warming challenges encourage to find safe and viable energy storage and delivery technologies. Hydrogen is a clean efficient energy carrier in various mobile fuel-cell applications and owned no adverse effects on the environment and human health. However hydrogen storage is considered a bottleneck problem for the progress of the hydrogen economy. Liquid-organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are organic substances in liquid or semi-solid states that store hydrogen by catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes over multiple cycles and may support a future hydrogen economy. Remarkably hydrogen storage in LOHC systems has attracted dramatically more attention than conventional storage systems such as high-pressure compression liquefaction and absorption/adsorption techniques. Potential LOHC media must provide fully reversible hydrogen storage via catalytic processes thermal stability low melting points favorable hydrogenation thermodynamics and kinetics large-scale availability and compatibility with current fuel energy infrastructure to practically employ these molecules in various applications. In this review we present various considerable aspects for the development of ideal LOHC systems. We highlight the recent progress of LOHC candidates and their catalytic approach as well as briefly discuss the theoretical insights for understanding the reaction mechanism.
Particle Size and Crystal Phase Effects in Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is an increasingly important approach for producing liquid fuels and chemicals via syngas—that is synthesis gas a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen—generated from coal natural gas or biomass. In FTS dispersed transition metal nanoparticles are used to catalyze the reactions underlying the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. Catalytic activity and selectivity are strongly correlated with the electronic and geometric structure of the nanoparticles which depend on the particle size morphology and crystallographic phase of the nanoparticles. In this article we review recent works dealing with the aspects of bulk and surface sensitivity of the FTS reaction. Understanding the different catalytic behavior in more detail as a function of these parameters may guide the design of more active selective and stable FTS catalysts.
Effective Thermal Conductivity of Insulation Materials for Cryogenic LH2 Storage Tanks: A Review

An accurate estimation of the effective thermal conductivity of various insulation materials is essential in the evaluation of heat leak and boil-off rate from liquid hydrogen storage tanks. In this work we review the existing experimental data and various proposed correlations for predicting the effective conductivity of insulation systems consisting of powders foams fibrous materials and multilayer systems. We also propose a first principles-based correlation that may be used to estimate the dependence of the effective conductivity as a function of temperature interstitial gas composition pressure and structural properties of the material. We validate the proposed correlation using available experimental data for some common insulation materials. Further improvements and testing of the proposed correlation using laboratory scale data obtained using potential LH2 tank insulation materials are also discussed.
AI Agents Envisioning the Future: Forecast-based Operation of Renewable Energy Storage Systems Using Hydrogen with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Hydrogen-based energy storage has the potential to compensate for the volatility of renewable power generation in energy systems with a high renewable penetration. The operation of these storage facilities can be optimized using automated energy management systems. This work presents a Reinforcement Learning-based energy management approach in the context of CO2-neutral hydrogen production and storage for an industrial combined heat and power application. The economic performance of the presented approach is compared to a rule-based energy management strategy as a lower benchmark and a Dynamic Programming-based unit commitment as an upper benchmark. The comparative analysis highlights both the potential benefits and drawbacks of the implemented Reinforcement Learning approach. The simulation results indicate a promising potential of Reinforcement Learning-based algorithms for hydrogen production planning outperforming the lower benchmark. Furthermore a novel approach in the scientific literature demonstrates that including energy and price forecasts in the Reinforcement Learning observation space significantly improves optimization results and allows the algorithm to take variable prices into account. An unresolved challenge however is balancing multiple conflicting objectives in a setting with few degrees of freedom. As a result no parameterization of the reward function could be found that fully satisfied all predefined targets highlighting one of the major challenges for Reinforcement Learning -based energy management algorithms to overcome.
Heat Transfer Analysis of High Pressure Hydrogen Tank Fillings

Fast fillings of hydrogen vehicles require proper control of the temperature to ensure the integrity of the storage tanks. This study presents an analysis of heat transfer during filling of a hydrogen tank. A conjugate heat transfer based on energy balance is introduced. The numerical model is validated against fast filling experiments of hydrogen in a Type IV tank by comparing the gas temperature evolution. The impact of filling parameters such as initial temperature inlet nozzle diameter and filling time is then assessed. For the considered Type IV tank the results show that both a higher and lower tank shell thermal conductivity results in lower inner wall peak temperatures. The presented model provides an analytical description of the temperature evolution in the gas and in the tank shell and is thus a useful tool to explore a broad range of parameters e.g. to determine new hydrogen filling protocols.
Impact of Local Emergency Demand Response Programs on the Operation of Electricity and Gas Systems

With increasing attention to climate change the penetration level of renewable energy sources (RES) in the electricity network is increasing. Due to the intermittency of RES gas‐fired power plants could play a significant role in backing up the RES in order to maintain the supply– demand balance. As a result the interaction between gas and power networks are significantly in‐ creasing. On the other hand due to the increase in peak demand (e.g. electrification of heat) net‐ work operators are willing to execute demand response programs (DRPs) to improve congestion management and reduce costs. In this context modeling and optimal implementation of DRPs in proportion to the demand is one of the main issues for gas and power network operators. In this paper an emergency demand response program (EDRP) is implemented locally to reduce the con‐ gestion of transmission lines and gas pipelines more efficiently. Additionally the effects of optimal implementation of local emergency demand response program (LEDRP) in gas and power networks using linear and non‐linear economic models (power exponential and logarithmic) for EDRP in terms of cost and line congestion and risk of unserved demand are investigated. The most reliable demand response model is the approach that has the least difference between the estimated demand and the actual demand. Furthermore the role of the LEDRP in the case of hydrogen injection instead of natural gas in the gas infrastructure is investigated. The optimal incentives for each bus or node are determined based on the power transfer distribution factor gas transfer distribution factor available electricity or gas transmission capability and combination of unit commitment with the LEDRP in the integrated operation of these networks. According to the results implementing the LEDRP in gas and power networks reduces the total operation cost up to 11% and could facilitate hydrogen injection to the network. The proposed hybrid model is implemented on a 24‐bus IEEE electricity network and a 15‐bus gas network to quantify the role and value of different LEDRP models.
Two-stage Model Predictive Control for a Hydrogen-based Storage System Paired to a Wind Farm Towards Green Hydrogen Production for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

This study proposes a multi-level model predictive control (MPC) for a grid-connected wind farm paired to a hydrogen-based storage system (HESS) to produce hydrogen as a fuel for commercial road vehicles while meeting electric and contractual loads at the same time. In particular the integrated system (wind farm + HESS) should comply with the “fuel production” use case as per the IEA-HIA report where the hydrogen production for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) has the highest unconditional priority among all the objectives. Based on models adopting mixed-integer constraints and dynamics the problem of external hydrogen consumer requests optimal load demand tracking and electricity market participation is solved at different timescales to achieve a long-term plan based on forecasts that then are adjusted at real-time. The developed controller will be deployed onto the management platform of the HESS which is paired to a wind farm established in North Norway within the EU funded project HAEOLUS. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed controller efficiently manages the integrated system and commits the equipment so as to comply with the requirements of the addressed scenario. The operating costs of the devices are reduced by 5% which corresponds to roughly 300 commutations saved per year for devices.
A Study on the Prediction of the Temperature and Mass of Hydrogen Gas inside a Tank during Fast Filling Process

The hydrogen compression cycle system recycles hydrogen compressed by a compressor at high pressure and stores it in a high-pressure container. Thermal stress is generated due to increase in the pressure and temperature of hydrogen in the hydrogen storage tank during the fast filing process. For the sake of safety it is of great practical significance to predict and control the temperature change in the tank. The hydrogen charging process in the storage tank of the hydrogen charging station was studied by experimentation and simulation. In this paper a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model for non-adiabatic real filling of a 50 MPa hydrogen cylinder was presented. In addition a shear stress transport (k-ω) model and real gas model were used in order to account for thermo-fluid dynamics during the filling of hydrogen storage tanks (50 MPa 343 L). Compared to the simulation results with the experimental data carried out under the same conditions the temperatures calculated from the simulated non-adiabatic condition results were lower (by 5.3%) than those from the theoretical adiabatic condition calculation. The theoretical calculation was based on the experimentally measured pressure value. The calculated simulation mass was 8.23% higher than the theoretical result. The results of this study will be very useful in future hydrogen energy research and hydrogen charging station developments.

Hydrogen energy has been assessed as a clean and renewable energy source for future energy demand. For harnessing hydrogen energy to its fullest potential storage is a key parameter. It is well known that important hydrogen storage characteristics are operating pressure-temperature of hydrogen hydrogen storage capacity hydrogen absorption-desorption kinetics and heat transfer in the hydride bed. Each application needs specific properties. Every class of hydrogen storage materials has a different set of hydrogenation characteristics. Hence it is required to understand the properties of all hydrogen storage materials. The present review is focused on the state-of– the–art hydrogen storage materials including metal hydrides magnesium-based materials complex hydride systems carbonaceous materials metal organic frameworks perovskites and materials and processes based on artificial intelligence. In each category of materials‘ discovery hydrogen storage mechanism and reaction crystal structure and recent progress have been discussed in detail. Together with the fundamental synthesis process latest techniques of material tailoring like nanostructuring nanoconfinement catalyzing alloying and functionalization have also been discussed. Hydrogen energy research has a promising potential to replace fossil fuels from energy uses especially from automobile sector. In this context efforts initiated worldwide for clean hydrogen production and its use via fuel cell in vehicles is much awaiting steps towards sustainable energy demand.
Assessment of Hydrogen Based Long Term Electrical Storage in Residential Energy Systems

Among the numerous envisioned applications for hydrogen in the decarbonization of the energy system seasonal energy storage is usually regarded as one of the most likely options. Although long-term energy storage is usually considered at grid-scale level given the increasing diffusion of distributed energy systems and the expected cost reduction in hydrogen related components some companies are starting to offer residential systems with PV modules and batteries that rely on hydrogen for seasonal storage of electrical energy. Such hydrogen storage systems are generally composed by water electrolysers hydrogen storage vessels and fuel cells.<br/>The aim of this work is to investigate such systems and their possible applications for different geographical conditions in Italy. On-grid and off-grid systems are considered and compared to systems without hydrogen in terms of self-consumption ratio size of components and economic investment. Each different option has been assessed from a techno-economic point of view via MESS (Multi Energy Systems Simulator) an analytical programming tool for the analysis of local energy systems.<br/>Results have identified the optimal sizing of the system's components and have shown how such systems are not in general economically competitive for a single dwelling although they can in some cases ensure energy independence.
Recent Development in Nanoconfined Hydrides for Energy Storage

Hydrogen is the ultimate vector for a carbon-free sustainable green-energy. While being the most promising candidate to serve this purpose hydrogen inherits a series of characteristics making it particularly difficult to handle store transport and use in a safe manner. The researchers’ attention has thus shifted to storing hydrogen in its more manageable forms: the light metal hydrides and related derivatives (ammonia-borane tetrahydridoborates/borohydrides tetrahydridoaluminates/alanates or reactive hydride composites). Even then the thermodynamic and kinetic behavior faces either too high energy barriers or sluggish kinetics (or both) and an efficient tool to overcome these issues is through nanoconfinement. Nanoconfined energy storage materials are the current state-of-the-art approach regarding hydrogen storage field and the current review aims to summarize the most recent progress in this intriguing field. The latest reviews concerning H2 production and storage are discussed and the shift from bulk to nanomaterials is described in the context of physical and chemical aspects of nanoconfinement effects in the obtained nanocomposites. The types of hosts used for hydrogen materials are divided in classes of substances the mean of hydride inclusion in said hosts and the classes of hydrogen storage materials are presented with their most recent trends and future prospects.
Selection of Underground Hydrogen Storage Risk Assessment Techniques

The article proposes the use of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to select a risk assessment technique associated with underground hydrogen storage. The initial choosing and ranking of risk assessment techniques can be considered as a multi-criteria decision problem. The usage of a decision model based on six criteria is proposed. A ranking of methods for estimating the risks associated with underground hydrogen storage is presented. The obtained results show that the application of the AHP-based approach may be a useful tool for selecting the UHS risk assessment technique. The proposed method makes it possible to make an objective decision of the most satisfactory approach from the point of view of all the adopted decision criteria regarding the selection of the best risk assessment technique.
Metallic Materials for Hydrogen Storage—A Brief Overview

The research and development of materials suitable for hydrogen storage has received a great deal of attention worldwide. Due to the safety risks involved in the conventional storage of hydrogen in its gaseous or liquid phase in containers and tanks development has focused on solid-phase hydrogen storage including metals. Light metal alloys and high-entropy alloys which have a high potential for hydrogen absorption/desorption at near-standard ambient conditions are receiving interest. For the development of these alloys due to the complexity of their compositions a computational approach using CALPHAD (Calculation of Phases Diagrams) and machine learning (ML) methods that exploit thermodynamic databases of already-known and experimentally verified systems are being increasingly applied. In order to increase the absorption capacity or to decrease the desorption temperature and to stabilize the phase composition specific material preparation methods (HEBM—high-energy milling HPT—high-pressure torsion) referred to as activation must be applied for some alloys.
Hydrogen Permeation Behavior of QP1180 High Strength Steel in Simulated Coastal Atmosphere

The hydrogen permeation behavior of QP1180 high strength steel for automobile was studied in simulate coastal atmosphere environment by using Devanathan-Stachurski dual electrolytic cell the cyclic corrosion test (CCT) thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) and electrochemical measurement methods. The current density of hydrogen permeation generally increases with reducing the relative humidity from 95% to 50% and periodically changes in the CCT process. These mainly result from the evolution of corrosion and rust layer on the specimen surface with the atmospheric humidity and intermittent salt spraying. The contents of diffusible hydrogen and non-diffusible hydrogen in the steel enlarge slightly in the CCT process. The plastic deformation about 11.3% results in much higher diffusible hydrogen content in steel but noticeably reduces the hydrogen permeation current and almost has no influence on the non-diffusible hydrogen content. The combination of double electrolytic cell and standard cyclic corrosion test can effectively characterize the hydrogen permeation of high strength steel in atmospheric service environments.
Recent Progress on Hydrogen Storage and Production Using Chemical Hydrogen Carriers

Depleting fossil fuel resources and anthropogenic climate changes are the reasons for the intensive development of new sustainable technologies based on renewable energy sources. One of the most promising strategies is the utilization of hydrogen as an energy vector. However the limiting issue for large-scale commercialization of hydrogen technologies is a safe efficient and economical method of gas storage. In industrial practice hydrogen compression and liquefaction are currently applied; however due to the required high pressure (30–70 MPa) and low temperature (−253 ◦C) both these methods are intensively energy consuming. Chemical hydrogen storage is a promising alternative as it offers safe storage of hydrogen-rich compounds under ambient conditions. Although many compounds serving as hydrogen carriers are considered some of them do not have realistic perspectives for large-scale commercialization. In this review the three most technologically advanced hydrogen carriers—dimethyl ether methanol and dibenzyltoluene—are discussed and compared. Their potential for industrial application in relation to the energy storage transport and mobility sectors is analyzed taking into account technological and environmental aspects.
Control of a Three-Phase Current Source Rectifier for H2 Storage Applications in AC Microgrids

The share of electrical energy from renewable sources has increased considerably in recent years in an attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To mitigate the uncertainties of these sources and to balance energy production with consumption an energy storage system (ESS) based on water electrolysis to produce hydrogen is studied. It can be applied to AC microgrids where several renewable energy sources and several loads may be connected which is the focus of the study. When excess electricity production is converted into hydrogen via water electrolysis low DC voltages and high currents are applied which needs specific power converters. The use of a three-phase buck-type current source converter in a single conversion stage allows for an adjustable DC voltage to be obtained at the terminals of the electrolyzer from a three-phase AC microgrid. The voltage control is preferred to the current control in order to improve the durability of the system. The classical control of the buck-type rectifier is generally done using two loops that correspond only to the control of its output variables. The lack of control of the input variables may generate oscillations of the grid current. Our contribution in this article is to propose a new control for the buck-type rectifier that controls both the input and output variables of the converter to avoid these grid current oscillations without the use of active damping methods. The suggested control method is based on an approach using the flatness properties of differential systems: it ensures the large-signal stability of the converter. The proposed control shows better results than the classical control especially in oscillation mitigation and dynamic performances with respect to the rejection of disturbances caused by a load step.
Renaissance of Ammonia Synthesis for Sustainable Production of Energy and Fertilizers

Green ammonia synthesis via the Haber–Bosch (HB) process has become a major field of research in the recent years for production of fertilizers and seasonal energy storage due to drastic drop in cost of renewable hydrogen. While the field of catalysis and engineering has worked on this subject for many years the current process of ammonia synthesis remains essentially unaltered. As a result current industrial developments on green ammonia are based on the HB process which can only be economical at exceptionally large scales limiting implementation on financially strained economies. For green ammonia to become an economic “equalizer” that supports the energy transition around the world it is essential to facilitate the downscalability and operational robustness of the process. This contribution briefly discusses the main scientific and engineering findings that have paved the way of low-temperature and pressure ammonia synthesis using heterogeneous catalysts.
Quaternary Hydrides Pd1-y-zAgyCuzHx Embedded Atom Method Potentials for Hydrogen Energy Applications

The Pd-H system has attracted extensive attention. Pd can absorb considerable amount of H at room temperature this ability is reversible so it is suitable for multiple energy applications. Pd-Ag alloys possess higher H permeability solubility and narrower miscibility gap with better mechanical properties than pure Pd but sulfur poisoning remains an issue. Pd-Cu alloys have excellent resistance to sulfur and carbon monoxide poisoning and hydrogen embrittlement good mechanical properties and broader temperature working environments over pure Pd but relatively lower hydrogen permeability and solubility than pure Pd and Pd-Ag alloys. This suggests that alloying Pd with Ag and Cu to create Pd-Ag-Cu ternary alloys can optimize the overall performance and substantially lowers the cost. Thus in this paper we provide the first embedded atom method potentials for the quaternary hydrides Pd1-y-zAgyCuzHx. The fully analytical potentials are fitted utilizing the central atom method without performing time-consuming molecular dynamics simulations.
Graded Grain Structure to Improve Hydrogen-Embrittlement Resistance of TWIP Steel

The high strength of twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels makes them vulnerable to the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) phenomenon thereby limiting their potential applications. This study suggests inducing a graded grain structure (GGS) in a Fe-17Mn-0.8C TWIP steel through shot peening and subsequent heat treatment to solve the problem. The microstructures and fracture surfaces of GGS TWIP steel were compared with those of conventionally manufactured TWIP steel possessing a uniform grain structure (UGS). Compared with the conventional UGS TWIP steel GGS steel showed similar tensile properties with a yield strength of 310 MPa tensile strength of 1060 MPa and elongation-to-failure of 135%. It also exhibited moderately enhanced low-cycle fatigue (LCF) resistance in terms of fatigue life (8196 cycles to failure) compared with the UGS steel (7201 cycles). Furthermore GGS TWIP steel exhibited a marked improvement in HE resistance both in the monotonic (by a slow-strain-rate test) and cyclic deformation modes (by the LCF test) in a hydrogen environment. First Solar Hydrogen Storage in a Private Building in Western Switzerland: Building energy Analysis and Schematic Design

Self-sufficiency of buildings with carbon emission reduction can be obtained thanks to the introduction of Photovoltaics systems coupled with Hydrogen seasonal storage. To be self-sufficient over the year the electricity converted to hydrogen by electrolysis during the sunny season can be re-used with the help of fuel cells during the winter season. This article is dealing with the dimensioning methodology of a solar PV hydrogen-electrochemical system for self-sufficient buildings. We introduce the case study of the first private building in western Switzerland that will be equipped with solar hydrogen storage. Calculation results of the dimensioning of the PV system with storage will be presented. The life cycle assessment and the calculations of the environmental indicators GWP and CED will be introduced.
Ammonia as Effective Hydrogen Storage: A Review on Production, Storage and Utilization

Ammonia is considered to be a potential medium for hydrogen storage facilitating CO2-free energy systems in the future. Its high volumetric hydrogen density low storage pressure and stability for long-term storage are among the beneficial characteristics of ammonia for hydrogen storage. Furthermore ammonia is also considered safe due to its high auto ignition temperature low condensation pressure and lower gas density than air. Ammonia can be produced from many different types of primary energy sources including renewables fossil fuels and surplus energy (especially surplus electricity from the grid). In the utilization site the energy from ammonia can be harvested directly as fuel or initially decomposed to hydrogen for many options of hydrogen utilization. This review describes several potential technologies in current conditions and in the future for ammonia production storage and utilization. Ammonia production includes the currently adopted Haber–Bosch electrochemical and thermochemical cycle processes. Furthermore in this study the utilization of ammonia is focused mainly on the possible direct utilization of ammonia due to its higher total energy efficiency covering the internal combustion engine combustion for gas turbines and the direct ammonia fuel cell. Ammonia decomposition is also described in order to give a glance at its progress and problems. Finally challenges and recommendations are also given toward the further development of the utilization of ammonia for hydrogen storage.
In-Situ Hollow Sample Setup Design for Mechanical Characterisation of Gaseous Hydrogen Embrittlement of Pipeline Steels and Welds

This work discusses the design and demonstration of an in-situ test setup for testing pipeline steels in a high pressure gaseous hydrogen (H2 ) environment. A miniature hollow pipe-like tensile specimen was designed that acts as the gas containment volume during the test. Specific areas of the specimen can be forced to fracture by selective notching as performed on the weldment. The volume of H2 used was minimised so the test can be performed safely without the need of specialised equipment. The setup is shown to be capable of characterising Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) in steels through testing an X60 pipeline steel and its weldment. The percentage elongation (%El) of the base metal was found to be reduced by 40% when tested in 100 barg H2 . Reduction of cross-sectional area (%RA) was found to decrease by 28% and 11% in the base metal and weld metal respectively when tested in 100 barg H2 . Benchmark test were performed at 100 barg N2 pressure. SEM fractography further indicated a shift from normal ductile fracture mechanisms to a brittle transgranular (TG) quasi-cleavage (QC) type fracture that is characteristic of HE.
A Model-based Parametric and Optimal Sizing of a Battery/Hydrogen Storage of a Real Hybrid Microgrid Supplying a Residential Load: Towards Island Operation

In this study the optimal sizing of a hybrid battery/hydrogen Energy Storage System “ESS” is assessed via a model-based parametric analysis in the context of a real hybrid renewable microgrid located in Huelva Spain supplying a real-time monitored residential load (3.5 kW; 5.6 MWh/year) in island mode. Four storage configurations (battery-only H2-only hybrid battery priority and hybrid H2 priority) are assessed under different Energy Management Strategies analysing system performance parameters such as Loss of Load “LL” (kWh;%) Over Production “OP” (kWh;%) round-trip storage efficiency ESS (%) and total storage cost (€) depending on the ESS sizing characteristics. A parallel approach to the storage optimal sizing via both multi-dimensional sensitivity analysis and PSO is carried out in order to address both sub-optimal and optimal regions respectively. Results show that a hybridised ESS capacity is beneficial from an energy security and efficiency point of view but can represent a substantial additional total cost (between 100 and 300 k€) to the hybrid energy system especially for the H2 ESS which presents higher costs. Reaching 100% supply from renewables is challenging and introducing a LL threshold induces a substantial relaxation of the sizing and cost requirements. Increase in battery capacity is more beneficial for the LL abatement while increasing H2 capacity is more useful to absorb large quantities of excess energy. The optimal design via PSO technique is complemented to the parametric study.

Globally the accelerating use of renewable energy sources enabled by increased efficiencies and reduced costs and driven by the need to mitigate the effects of climate change has significantly increased research in the areas of renewable energy production storage distribution and end-use. Central to this discussion is the use of hydrogen as a clean efficient energy vector for energy storage. This review by experts of Task 32 “Hydrogen-based Energy Storage” of the International Energy Agency Hydrogen TCP reports on the development over the last 6 years of hydrogen storage materials methods and techniques including electrochemical and thermal storage systems. An overview is given on the background to the various methods the current state of development and the future prospects. Hydrogen Storage for Mobility: A Review

Numerous reviews on hydrogen storage have previously been published. However most of these reviews deal either exclusively with storage materials or the global hydrogen economy. This paper presents a review of hydrogen storage systems that are relevant for mobility applications. The ideal storage medium should allow high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities quick uptake and release of fuel operation at room temperatures and atmospheric pressure safe use and balanced cost-effectiveness. All current hydrogen storage technologies have significant drawbacks including complex thermal management systems boil-off poor efficiency expensive catalysts stability issues slow response rates high operating pressures low energy densities and risks of violent and uncontrolled spontaneous reactions. While not perfect the current leading industry standard of compressed hydrogen offers a functional solution and demonstrates a storage option for mobility compared to other technologies.
Solid-State Hydrogen Storage for a Decarbonized Society

Humanity is confronted with one of the most significant challenges in its history. The excessive use of fossil fuel energy sources is causing extreme climate change which threatens our way of life and poses huge social and technological problems. It is imperative to look for alternate energy sources that can replace environmentally destructive fossil fuels. In this scenario hydrogen is seen as a potential energy vector capable of enabling the better and synergic exploitation of renewable energy sources. A brief review of the use of hydrogen as a tool for decarbonizing our society is given in this work. Special emphasis is placed on the possibility of storing hydrogen in solid-state form (in hydride species) on the potential fields of application of solid-state hydrogen storage and on the technological challenges solid-state hydrogen storage faces. A potential approach to reduce the carbon footprint of hydrogen storage materials is presented in the concluding section of this paper.
Mechanical Spectroscopy Investigation of Point Defect-Driven Phenomena in a Cr Martensitic Steel

The paper presents and discusses results of mechanical spectroscopy (MS) tests carried out on a Cr martensitic steel. The study regards the following topics: (i) embrittlement induced by Cr segregation; (ii) interaction of hydrogen with C–Cr associates; (iii) nucleation of Cr carbides. The MS technique permitted characterising of the specific role played by point defects in the investigated phenomena: (i) Cr segregation depends on C–Cr associates distribution in as-quenched material in particular a slow cooling rate (~150 K/min) from austenitic field involves an unstable distribution which leads to Cr concentration fluctuations after tempering at 973 K; (ii) hydrogen interacts with C–Cr associates and the phenomenon hinders hydrogen attack (HA) because hydrogen atoms bound by C–Cr associates are not able to diffuse towards grain boundaries and dislocation where CH4 bubbles may nucleate grow and merge to form the typical HA cracks; (iii) C–Cr associates take part in the nucleation mechanism of Cr7C3 carbides and specifically these carbides form by the aggregation of C–Cr associates with 1 Cr atom.
Magnesium-Based Materials for Hydrogen Storage—A Scope Review

Magnesium hydride and selected magnesium-based ternary hydride (Mg2FeH6 Mg2NiH4 and Mg2CoH5) syntheses and modification methods as well as the properties of the obtained materials which are modified mostly by mechanical synthesis or milling are reviewed in this work. The roles of selected additives (oxides halides and intermetallics) nanostructurization polymorphic transformations and cyclic stability are described. Despite the many years of investigations related to these hydrides and the significant number of different additives used there are still many unknown factors that affect their hydrogen storage properties reaction yield and stability. The described compounds seem to be extremely interesting from a theoretical point of view. However their practical application still remains debatable.
Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility of R4 and R5 High-Strength Mooring Steels in Cold and Warm Seawater

Hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility ratios calculated from slow strain rate tensile tests have been employed to study the response of three high-strength mooring steels in cold and warm synthetic seawater. The selected nominal testing temperatures have been 3 °C and 23 °C in order to resemble sea sites of offshore platform installation interest such as the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico respectively. Three scenarios have been studied for each temperature: free corrosion cathodic protection and overprotection. An improvement on the hydrogen embrittlement tendency of the steels has been observed when working in cold conditions. This provides a new insight on the relevance of the seawater temperature as a characteristic to be taken into account for mooring line design in terms of hydrogen embrittlement assessment.
Factors Affecting Hydrogen Adsorption in Metal–Organic Frameworks: A Short Review

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have significant potential for hydrogen storage. The main benefit of MOFs is their reversible and high-rate hydrogen adsorption process whereas their biggest disadvantage is related to their operation at very low temperatures. In this study we describe selected examples of MOF structures studied for hydrogen adsorption and different factors affecting hydrogen adsorption in MOFs. Approaches to improving hydrogen uptake are reviewed including surface area and pore volume in addition to the value of isosteric enthalpy of hydrogen adsorption. Nanoconfinement of metal hydrides inside MOFs is proposed as a new approach to hydrogen storage. Conclusions regarding MOFs with incorporated metal nanoparticles which may be used as nanoscaffolds and/or H2 sorbents are summarized as prospects for the near future.
Energetics of LOHC: Structure-Property Relationships from Network of Thermochemical Experiments and in Silico Methods

The storage of hydrogen is the key technology for a sustainable future. We developed an in silico procedure which is based on the combination of experimental and quantum-chemical methods. This method was used to evaluate energetic parameters for hydrogenation/dehydrogenation reactions of various pyrazine derivatives as a seminal liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) that are involved in the hydrogen storage technologies. With this in silico tool the tempo of the reliable search for suitable LOHC candidates will accelerate dramatically leading to the design and development of efficient materials for various niche applications.
A Mini-review on Recent Trends in Prospective Use of Porous 1D Nanomaterials for Hydrogen Storage

The sustainable development of hydrogen energy is a priority task for a possible solution to 26 the global energy crisis. Hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy source that today is used 27 exclusively in the form of compressed gas or in liquefied form which prevents its widespread 28 use. Storing hydrogen in solid-state systems will not only increase the bulk density and 29 gravimetric capacity but will also have a positive impact on safety issues. From this point of 30 view the current review considers the latest research in the field of application of 1D 31 nanomaterials for solid-state hydrogen storage and also discusses the mechanisms of its 32 adsorption and desorption. Despite the high publication activity the use of 1D nanomaterials for 33 hydrogen storage has not been fully studied. In the current review modern developments in the 34 field of hydrogen storage using 1D nanomaterials and composites based on them are investigated 35 in detail and their problems and future prospects are discussed.
Steady State Analysis of Gas Networks with Distributed Injection of Alternative Gas

A steady state analysis method was developed for gas networks with distributed injection of alternative gas. A low pressure gas network was used to validate the method. Case studies were carried out with centralized and decentralized injection of hydrogen and upgraded biogas. Results show the impact of utilizing a diversity of gas supply sources on pressure distribution and gas quality in the network. It is shown that appropriate management of using a diversity of gas supply sources can support network management while reducing carbon emissions.
Enhancing the Hydrogen Storage Properties of AxBy Intermetallic Compounds by Partial Substitution: A Short Review

Solid-state hydrogen storage covers a broad range of materials praised for their gravimetric volumetric and kinetic properties as well as for the safety they confer compared to gaseous or liquid hydrogen storage methods. Among them AxBy intermetallics show outstanding performances notably for stationary storage applications. Elemental substitution whether on the A or B site of these alloys allows the effective tailoring of key properties such as gravimetric density equilibrium pressure hysteresis and cyclic stability for instance. In this review we present a brief overview of partial substitution in several AxBy alloys from the long-established AB5 and AB2-types to the recently attractive and extensively studied AB and AB3 alloys including the largely documented solid-solution alloy systems. We not only present classical and pioneering investigations but also report recent developments for each AxBy category. Special care is brought to the influence of composition engineering on desorption equilibrium pressure and hydrogen storage capacity. A simple overview of the AxBy operating conditions is provided hence giving a sense of the range of possible applications whether for low- or high-pressure systems.
Improved Hydrogen Separation Performance of Asymmetric Oxygen Transport Membranes by Grooving in the Porous Support Layer

Hydrogen separation through oxygen transport membranes (OTMs) has attracted much attention. Asymmetric membranes with thin dense layers provide low bulk diffusion resistances and high overall hydrogen separation performances. However the resistance in the porous support layer (PSL) limits the overall separation performance significantly. Engineering the structure of the PSL is an appropriate way to enable fast gas transport and increase the separation performance. There is no relevant research on studying the influence of the PSL on hydrogen separation performance so far. Herein we prepared Ce0.85Sm0.15O1.925 – Sm0.6Sr0.4Cr0.3Fe0.7O3-δ (SDC-SSCF) asymmetric membranes with straight grooves in PSL by tape-casting and laser grooving. A ~30% improvement in the hydrogen separation rate was achieved by grooving in the PSLs. It indicates that the grooves may reduce the concentration polarization resistance in PSL for the hydrogen separation process. This work provides a straight evidence on optimizing the structures of PSL for improving the hydrogen separation performance of the membrane reactors.
Australian Hydrogen Hubs Study

Arup have conducted interviews with targeted industry and government stakeholders to gather data and perspectives to support the development of this study. Arup have also utilised private and publicly available data sources building on recent work undertaken by Geoscience Australia and Deloitte and the comprehensive stakeholder engagement process to inform our research. This study considers the supply chain and infrastructure requirements to support the development of export and domestic hubs. The study aims to provide a succinct “Hydrogen Hubs” report for presentation to the hydrogen working group.
The hydrogen supply chain infrastructure required to produce hydrogen for export and domestic hubs was identified along with feedback from the stakeholder engagement process. These infrastructure requirements can be used to determine the factors for assessing export and domestic hub opportunities. Hydrogen production pathways transportation mechanisms and uses were also further evaluated to identify how hubs can be used to balance supply and demand of hydrogen.
A preliminary list of current or anticipated locations has been developed through desktop research Arup project knowledge and the stakeholder consultation process. Over 30 potential hydrogen export locations have been identified in Australia through desktop research and the stakeholder survey and consultation process. In addition to establishing export hubs the creation of domestic demand hubs will be essential to the development of an Australian hydrogen economy. It is for this reason that a list of criteria has been developed for stakeholders to consider in the siting and design of hydrogen hubs. The key considerations explored are based on demand supply chain infrastructure and investment and policy areas.
Based on these considerations a list of criteria were developed to assess the viability of export and domestic hydrogen hubs. Criteria relevant to assessing the suitability of export and domestic hubs include:

- Port potential (current capacity & occupancy expandability & scalability);
- Availability of or potential for skilled workers (construction & operation);
- Availability of or potential for water (recycled & desalinated);
- Opportunity for co-location with industrial ammonia production and future industrial opportunities;
- Interest (projects priority ports state development areas politics etc.);
- Shipping distance to target market (Japan & South Korea);
- Availability of demand-based infrastructure (i.e. refuelling stations).

Using Additives to Control the Decomposition Temperature of Sodium Borohydride

Hydrogen (H2) shows great promise as zero-carbon emission fuel but there are several challenges to overcome in regards to storage and transportation to make it a more universal energy solution. Gaseous hydrogen requires high pressures and large volume tanks while storage of liquid hydrogen requires cryogenic temperatures; neither option is ideal due to cost and the hazards involved. Storage in the solid state presents an attractive alternative and can meet the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) constraints to find materials containing > 7 % H2 (gravimetric weight) with a maximum H2 release under 125 °C.
While there are many candidate hydrogen storage materials the vast majority are metal hydrides. Of the hydrides this review focuses solely on sodium borohydride (NaBH4) which is often not covered in other hydride reviews. However as it contains 10.6% (by weight) H2 that can release at 133 ± 3 JK−1mol−1 this inexpensive material has received renewed attention. NaBH4 should decompose to H2g) Na(s) and B(s) and could be recycled into its original form. Unfortunately metal to ligand charge transfer in NaBH4 induces high thermodynamic stability creating a high decomposition temperature of 530 °C. In an effort make H2 more accessible at lower temperatures researchers have incorporated additives to destabilize the structure.

Determination of Critical Hydrogen Concentration and Its Effect on Mechanical Performance of 2200 MPa and 600 HBW Martensitic Ultra-High-Strength Steel

The influence of hydrogen on the mechanical performance of a hot-rolled martensitic steel was studied by means of constant extension rate test (CERT) and constant load test (CLT) followed with thermal desorption spectroscopy measurements. The steel shows a reduction in tensile strength up to 25% of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at critical hydrogen concentrations determined to be about 1.1 wt.ppm and 50% of UTS at hydrogen concentrations of 2 wt.ppm. No further strength degradation was observed up to hydrogen concentrations of 4.8 wt.ppm. It was observed that the interplay between local hydrogen concentrations and local stress states accompanied with the presence of total average hydrogen reducing the general plasticity of the specimen are responsible for the observed strength degradation of the steel at the critical concentrations of hydrogen. Under CLT the steel does not show sensitivity to hydrogen at applied loads below 50% of UTS under continuous electrochemical hydrogen charging up to 85 h. Hydrogen enhanced creep rates during constant load increased linearly with increasing hydrogen concentration in the steel.
Solid State Hydrogen Storage in Alanates and Alanate-Based Compounds: A Review

The safest way to store hydrogen is in solid form physically entrapped in molecular form in highly porous materials or chemically bound in atomic form in hydrides. Among the different families of these compounds alkaline and alkaline earth metals alumino-hydrides (alanates) have been regarded as promising storing media and have been extensively studied since 1997 when Bogdanovic and Schwickardi reported that Ti-doped sodium alanate could be reversibly dehydrogenated under moderate conditions. In this review the preparative methods; the crystal structure; the physico-chemical and hydrogen absorption-desorption properties of the alanates of Li Na K Ca Mg Y Eu and Sr; and of some of the most interesting multi-cation alanates will be summarized and discussed. Stand-Alone Microgrid with 100% Renewable Energy: A Case Study with Hybrid Solar PV-Battery-Hydrogen

A 100% renewable energy-based stand-alone microgrid system can be developed by robust energy storage systems to stabilize the variable and intermittent renewable energy resources. Hydrogen as an energy carrier and energy storage medium has gained enormous interest globally in recent years. Its use in stand-alone or off-grid microgrids for both the urban and rural communities has commenced recently in some locations. Therefore this research evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of renewable energy-based systems using hydrogen as energy storage for a stand-alone/off-grid microgrid. Three case scenarios in a microgrid environment were identified and investigated in order to select an optimum solution for a remote community by considering the energy balance and techno-economic optimization. The “HOMER Pro” energy modelling and simulating software was used to compare the energy balance economics and environmental impact amongst the proposed scenarios. The simulation results showed that the hydrogen-battery hybrid energy storage system is the most cost-effective scenario though all developed scenarios are technically possible and economically comparable in the long run while each has different merits and challenges. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid energy systems have significant potentialities in electrifying remote communities with low energy generation costs as well as a contribution to the reduction of their carbon footprint and to ameliorating the energy crisis to achieve a sustainable future.
Irreversible Hydrogen Embrittlement Study of B1500HS High Strength Boron Steel

The reversible/irreversible recovery of mechanical properties and the microstructure characteristics of a typical hot-stamped steel B1500HS have been studied under different conditions of hydrogen permeation. Initially all tested specimens were permeated by hydrogen atoms through an electrochemical hydrogen charging scheme. Then the comparisons between different currents and charging time were performed. The influence of different storage time was compared as well. Additionally the effect of the plastic strain introduced by pre-stretching was also investigated. The experimental results showed that the negative impact of hydrogen embrittlement was altered from reversible to irreversible as the magnitude of the charging current increased. The hydrogen blistering and the hydrogen charging-induced cracks were both observed and inspected in the tested samples regarding the irreversible situation. Moreover the adverse influence of hydrogen embrittlement was enhanced by plastic pre-straining or extending the charging period. At the micro-level hydrogen charging-induced cracks generally were generated at defect locations such as the prior austenite grain boundaries and lath martensite interfaces. Particularly crack direction occurred perpendicular to the orientation of lath martensite and transgranular fracture occurred at the prior austenite grains.

Hydrogen vs. Battery in the Long-term Operation. A Comparative Between Energy Management Strategies for Hybrid Renewable Microgrids

The growth of the world’s energy demand over recent decades in relation to energy intensity and demography is clear. At the same time the use of renewable energy sources is pursued to address decarbonization targets but the stochasticity of renewable energy systems produces an increasing need for management systems to supply such energy volume while guaranteeing at the same time the security and reliability of the microgrids. Locally distributed energy storage systems (ESS) may provide the capacity to temporarily decouple production and demand. In this sense the most implemented ESS in local energy districts are small–medium-scale electrochemical batteries. However hydrogen systems are viable for storing larger energy quantities thanks to its intrinsic high mass-energy density. To match generation demand and storage energy management systems (EMSs) become crucial. This paper compares two strategies for an energy management system based on hydrogen-priority vs. battery-priority for the operation of a hybrid renewable microgrid. The overall performance of the two mentioned strategies is compared in the long-term operation via a set of evaluation parameters defined by the unmet load storage efficiency operating hours and cumulative energy. The results show that the hydrogen-priority strategy allows the microgrid to be led towards island operation because it saves a higher amount of energy while the battery-priority strategy reduces the energy efficiency in the storage round trip. The main contribution of this work lies in the demonstration that conventional EMS for microgrids’ operation based on battery-priority strategy should turn into hydrogen-priority to keep the reliability and independence of the microgrid in the long-term operation.
Machine Learning Approach for Prediction of Hydrogen Environment Embrittlement in Austenitic Steels

This study introduces a machine learning approach to predict the effect of alloying elements and test conditions on the hydrogen environment embrittlement (HEE) index of austenitic steels for the first time. The correlation between input features and the HEE index was analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) and Maximum Information Coefficient (MIC) algorithms. The correlation analysis results identified Ni and Mo as dominant features influencing the HEE index of austenitic steels. Based on the analysis results the performance of the four representative machine learning models as a function of the number of top-ranked features was evaluated: random forest (RF) linear regression (LR) Bayesian ridge (BR) and support vector machine (SVM). Regardless of the type and the number of top-ranking features the RF model had the highest accuracy among various models. The machine learning-based approach is expected to be useful in designing new steels having mechanical properties required for hydrogen applications.

The large-scale storage of hydrogen in salt caverns modelled on today’s natural gas storage is a promising approach to storing renewable energy over a large power range and for the required time period. An essential subsystem of the overall gas storage is the surface facility and in particular the compressor system. The future design of compressor systems for hydrogen storage strongly depends on the respective boundary conditions. Therefore this work analyses the requirements of compressor systems for cavern storage facilities for the storage of green hydrogen i.e. hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources using the example of Lower Saxony in Germany. In this course a hydrogen storage demand profile of one year is developed in hourly resolution from feed-in time series of renewable energy sources. The Impact of Process Heat on the Decarbonisation Potential of Offshore Installations by Hybrid Energy Systems

An opportunity to decarbonise the offshore oil and gas sector lies in the integration of renewable energy sources with energy storage in a hybrid energy system (HES). Such concept enables maximising the exploitation of carbon-free renewable power while minimising the emissions associated with conventional power generation systems such as gas turbines. Offshore plants in addition to electrical and mechanical power also require process heat for their operation. Solutions that provide low-emission heat in parallel to power are necessary to reach a very high degree of decarbonisation. This paper investigates different options to supply process heat in offshore HES while the electric power is mostly covered by a wind turbine. All HES configurations include energy storage in the form of hydrogen tied to proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers and fuel cells stacks. As a basis for comparison a standard configuration relying solely on a gas turbine and a waste heat recovery unit is considered. A HES combined with a waste heat recovery unit to supply heat proved efficient when low renewable power capacity is integrated but unable to deliver a total CO2 emission reduction higher than around 40%. Alternative configurations such as the utilization of gas-fired or electric heaters become more competitive at large installed renewable capacity approaching CO2 emission reductions of up to 80%.

In this podcast David Ledesma talks with Rahmat Poudineh and Martin Palovic about their paper on integrating hydrogen into the European energy transfer infrastructure landscape. As hydrogen is expected to play an important role in European plans towards climate neutrality adequate hydrogen transport (and storage) infrastructure needs to be established. However hydrogen transport infrastructures are costly and have a long lead time. Furthermore hydrogen can be transported via a variety of means: it can be transported as a gas via pipelines or liquid via road rail and sea or even converted to derivatives such as ammonia or methanol for long distance transportation. It is also possible to transfer electrical energy instead of hydrogen and produce hydrogen in a decentralized way. From a system perspective all these infrastructures represent elements of a grand hydrogen ‘polygrid’ that will be the backbone of the future decarbonized energy system. This raises the fundamental question of how to prevent inefficiency and infrastructure redundancy across different modes of hydrogen transport. The task is made more challenging by technological uncertainty the unpredictability of future supply and demand for hydrogen network externality effects and investment irreversibility of grid-based infrastructures. In this podcast we discuss three possible coordination approaches to optimise future cross-sectoral investment into hydrogen transport infrastructure and highlight their strengths and shortcomings.

Solid Air Hydrogen Liquefaction, the Missing Link of the Hydrogen Economy

The most challenging aspect of developing a green hydrogen economy is long-distance oceanic transportation. Hydrogen liquefaction is a transportation alternative. However the cost and energy consumption for liquefaction is currently prohibitively high creating a major barrier to hydrogen supply chains. This paper proposes using solid nitrogen or oxygen as a medium for recycling cold energy across the hydrogen liquefaction supply chain. When a liquid hydrogen (LH2) carrier reaches its destination the regasification process of the hydrogen produces solid nitrogen or oxygen. The solid nitrogen or oxygen is then transported in the LH2 carrier back to the hydrogen liquefaction facility and used to reduce the energy consumption cooling gaseous hydrogen. As a result the energy required to liquefy hydrogen can be reduced by 25.4% using N2 and 27.3% using O2. Solid air hydrogen liquefaction (SAHL) can be the missing link for implementing a global hydrogen economy.
Techno-economic Analysis of Developing an Underground Hydrogen Storage Facility in Depleted Gas Field: A Dutch Case Study

Underground hydrogen storage will be an essential part of the future hydrogen infrastructure to provide flexibility and security of supply. Storage in porous reservoirs should complement storage in salt caverns to be able to meet the projected high levels of required storage capacities. To assess its techno-economic feasibility a case study of hydrogen storage in a depleted gas field in the Netherlands is developed. Subsurface modelling is performed and various surface facility design concepts are investigated to calculate the levelized cost of hydrogen storage (LCOHS). Our base case with hydrogen as cushion gas results in an LCOHS of 0.79 EUR/kg (range of 0.58–1.04 EUR/kg). Increasing the number of full-cycle equivalents from 1 to 6 lowers the storage cost to 0.25 EUR/kg. The investment cost of the cushion gas represents 76% of the total cost. With nitrogen as cushion gas LCOHS is reduced to 0.49 EUR/kg (range of 0.42–0.56 EUR/kg).
Does the United Kingdom Have Sufficient Geological Storage Capacity to Support a Hydrogen Economy? Estimating the Salt Cavern Storage Potential of Bedded Halite Formations

Hydrogen can be used to enable decarbonisation of challenging applications such as provision of heat and as a fuel for heavy transport. The UK has set out a strategy for developing a new low carbon hydrogen sector by 2030. Underground storage will be a key component of any regional or national hydrogen network because of the variability of both supply and demand across different end-use applications. For storage of pure hydrogen salt caverns currently remain the only commercially proven subsurface storage technology implemented at scale. A new network of hydrogen storage caverns will therefore be required to service a low carbon hydrogen network. To facilitate planning for such systems this study presents a modelling approach used to evaluate the UK's theoretical hydrogen storage capacity in new salt caverns in bedded rock salt. The findings suggest an upper bound potential for hydrogen storage exceeding 64 million tonnes providing 2150 TWh of storage capacity distributed in three discrete salt basins in the UK. The modelled cavern capacity has been interrogated to identify the practical inter-seasonal storage capacity suitable for integration in a hydrogen transmission system. Depending on cavern spacing a peak load deliverability of between 957 and 1876 GW is technically possible with over 70% of the potential found in the East Yorkshire and Humber region. The range of geologic uncertainty affecting the estimates is approximately ±36%. In principle the peak domestic heating demand of approximately 170 GW across the UK can be met using the hydrogen withdrawn from caverns alone albeit in practice the storage potential is unevenly distributed. The analysis indicates that the availability of salt cavern storage potential does not present a limiting constraint for the development of a low-carbon hydrogen network in the UK. The general framework presented in this paper can be applied to other regions to estimate region-specific hydrogen storage potential in salt caverns.
Experimental Investigation of Stress Corrosion on Supercritical CO2 Transportation Pipelines Against Leakage for CCUS Applications

Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is one of the key technologies that will determine how humans address global climate change. For captured CO2 in order to avoid the complications associated with two-phase flow most carbon steel pipelines are operated in the supercritical state on a large scale. A pipeline has clear Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) sensitivity under the action of stress and corrosion medium which will generally cause serious consequences. In this study X70 steel was selected to simulate an environment in the process of supercritical CO2 transportation by using high-temperature high-pressure Slow Strain Rate Tensile (SSRT) tests and high-temperature high-pressure electrochemical test devices with different O2 and SO2 contents. Studies have shown that 200 ppm SO2 shows a clear SCC sensitivity tendency which is obvious when the SO2 content reaches 600 ppm. The SCC sensitivity increases with the increase of SO2 concentration but the increase amplitude decreases. With the help of advanced microscopic characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) through the analysis of fracture and side morphology the stress corrosion mechanism of a supercritical CO2 pipeline containing SO2 and O2 impurities was obtained by hydrogen embrittlement fracture characteristics. With the increase of SO2 content the content of Fe element decreases and the corrosion increases demonstrating that SO2 plays a leading role in electrochemical corrosion. This study further strengthens the theoretical basis of stress corrosion of supercritical CO2 pipelines plays an important role in preventing leakage of supercritical CO2 pipelines and will provide guidance for the industrial application of CCUS.
Operating Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems in Wind Farms for Smooth Power Injection: A Penalty Fees Aware Model Predictive Control

Smooth power injection is one of the possible services that modern wind farms could provide in the not-so-far future for which energy storage is required. Indeed this is one among the three possible operations identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA)-Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) within the Task 24 final report that may promote their integration into the main grid in particular when paired to hydrogen-based energy storages. In general energy storage can mitigate the inherent unpredictability of wind generation providing that they are deployed with appropriate control algorithms. On the contrary in the case of no storage wind farm operations would be strongly affected as well as their economic performances since the penalty fees wind farm owners/operators incur in case of mismatches between the contracted power and that actually delivered. This paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm that operates a Hydrogen-based Energy Storage System (HESS) consisting of one electrolyzer one fuel cell and one tank paired to a wind farm committed to smooth power injection into the grid. The MPC relies on Mixed-Logic Dynamic (MLD) models of the electrolyzer and the fuel cell in order to leverage their advanced features and handles appropriate cost functions in order to account for the operating costs the potential value of hydrogen as a fuel and the penalty fee mechanism that may negatively affect the expected profits generated by the injection of smooth power. Numerical simulations are conducted by considering wind generation profiles from a real wind farm in the center-south of Italy and spot prices according to the corresponding market zone. The results show the impact of each cost term on the performances of the controller and how they can be effectively combined in order to achieve some reasonable trade-off. In particular it is highlighted that a static choice of the corresponding weights can lead to not very effective handling of the effects given by the combination of the system conditions with the various exogenous’ while a dynamic choice may suit the purpose instead. Moreover the simulations show that the developed models and the set-up mathematical program can be fruitfully leveraged for inferring indications on the devices’ sizing.
Batteries and Hydrogen Storage: Technical Analysis and Commercial Revision to Select the Best Option

This paper aims to analyse two energy storage methods—batteries and hydrogen storage technologies—that in some cases are treated as complementary technologies but in other ones they are considered opposed technologies. A detailed technical description of each technology will allow to understand the evolution of batteries and hydrogen storage technologies: batteries looking for higher energy capacity and lower maintenance while hydrogen storage technologies pursuing better volumetric and gravimetric densities. Additionally as energy storage systems a mathematical model is required to know the state of charge of the system. For this purpose a mathematical model is proposed for conventional batteries for compressed hydrogen tanks for liquid hydrogen storage and for metal hydride tanks which makes it possible to integrate energy storage systems into management strategies that aim to solve the energy balance in plants based on hybrid energy storage systems. From the technical point of view most batteries are easier to operate and do not require special operating conditions while hydrogen storage methods are currently functioning at the two extremes (high temperatures for metal and complex hydrides and low temperatures for liquid hydrogen or physisorption). Additionally the technical comparison made in this paper also includes research trends and future possibilities in an attempt to help plan future policies.
An Overview of the Recent Advances in Composite Materials and Artificial Intelligence for Hydrogen Storage Vessels Design

The environmental impact of CO2 emissions is widely acknowledged making the development of alternative propulsion systems a priority. Hydrogen is a potential candidate to replace fossil fuels for transport applications with three technologies considered for the onboard storage of hydrogen: storage in the form of a compressed gas storage as a cryogenic liquid and storage as a solid. These technologies are now competing to meet the requirements of vehicle manufacturers; each has its own unique challenges that must be understood to direct future research and development efforts. This paper reviews technological developments for Hydrogen Storage Vessel (HSV) designs including their technical performance manufacturing costs safety and environmental impact. More specifically an up-to-date review of fiber-reinforced polymer composite HSVs was explored including the end-of-life recycling options. A review of current numerical models for HSVs was conducted including the use of artificial intelligence techniques to assess the performance of composite HSVs leading to more sophisticated designs for achieving a more sustainable future.
A Comparative Study for H2 –CH4 Mixture Wettability in Sandstone Porous Rocks Relevant to Underground Hydrogen Storage

Characterizing the wettability of hydrogen (H2 )–methane (CH4 ) mixtures in subsurface reservoirs is the first step towards understanding containment and transport properties for underground hydrogen storage (UHS). In this study we investigate the static contact angles of H2 –CH4 mixtures in contact with brine and Bentheimer sandstone rock using a captive-bubble cell device at different pressures temperatures and brine salinity values. It is found that under the studied conditions H2 and CH4 show comparable wettability behaviour with contact angles ranging between [25◦–45◦ ]; and consequently their mixtures behave similar to the pure gas systems independent of composition pressure temperature and salinity. For the system at rest the acting buoyancy and surface forces allow for theoretical sensitivity analysis for the captive-bubble cell approach to characterize the wettability. Moreover it is theoretically validated that under similar Bond numbers and similar bubble sizes the contact angles of H2 and CH4 bubbles and their mixtures are indeed comparable. Consequently in large-scale subsurface storage systems where buoyancy and capillary are the main acting forces H2 CH4 and their mixtures will have similar wettability characteristics.
Complex Metal Borohydrides: From Laboratory Oddities to Prime Candidates in Energy Storage Applications

Despite being the lightest element in the periodic table hydrogen poses many risks regarding its production storage and transport but it is also the one element promising pollutionfree energy for the planet energy reliability and sustainability. Development of such novel materials conveying a hydrogen source face stringent scrutiny from both a scientific and a safety point of view: they are required to have a high hydrogen wt.% storage capacity must store hydrogen in a safe manner (i.e. by chemically binding it) and should exhibit controlled and preferably rapid absorption–desorption kinetics. Even the most advanced composites today face the difficult task of overcoming the harsh re-hydrogenation conditions (elevated temperature high hydrogen pressure). Traditionally the most utilized materials have been RMH (reactive metal hydrides) and complex metal borohydrides M(BH4 )x (M: main group or transition metal; x: valence of M) often along with metal amides or various additives serving as catalysts (Pd2+ Ti4+ etc.). Through destabilization (kinetic or thermodynamic) M(BH4 )x can effectively lower their dehydrogenation enthalpy providing for a faster reaction occurring at a lower temperature onset. The present review summarizes the recent scientific results on various metal borohydrides aiming to present the current state-of-the-art on such hydrogen storage materials while trying to analyze the pros and cons of each material regarding its thermodynamic and kinetic behavior in hydrogenation studies.
Hydrogen Carriers: Scientific Limits and Challenges for the Supply Chain, and Key Factors for Techno-Economic Analysis

Hydrogen carriers are one of the keys to the success of using hydrogen as an energy vector. Indeed sustainable hydrogen production exploits the excess of renewable energy sources after which temporary storage is required. The conventional approaches to hydrogen storage and transport are compressed hydrogen (CH2 ) and liquefied hydrogen (LH2 ) which require severe operating conditions related to pressure (300–700 bar) and temperature (T < −252 ◦C) respectively. To overcome these issues which have hindered market penetration several alternatives have been proposed in the last few decades. In this review the most promising hydrogen carriers (ammonia methanol liquid organic hydrogen carriers and metal hydrides) have been considered and the main stages of their supply chain (production storage transportation H2 release and their recyclability) have been described and critically analyzed focusing on the latest results available in the literature the highlighting of which is our current concern. The last section reviews recent techno-economic analyses to drive the selection of hydrogen carrier systems and the main constraints that must be considered. The analyzed results show how the selection of H2 carriers is a multiparametric function and it depends on technological factors as well as international policies and regulations.
Techno-economic Assessment of Long-distance Supply Chains of Energy Carriers: Comparing Hydrogen and Iron for Carbon-free Electricity Generation

The effective usage of renewable energy sources requires ways of storage and delivery to balance energy demand and availability divergences. Carbon-free chemical energy carriers are proposed solutions converting clean electricity into stable media for storage long-distance energy trade and on-demand electricity generation. Among them hydrogen (H2) is noteworthy being the subject of significant investment and research. Metal fuels such as iron (Fe) represent another promising solution for a clean energy supply but establishing an interconnected ecosystem still requires considerable research and development. This work proposes a model to assess the supply chain characteristics of hydrogen and iron as clean carbon-free energy carriers and then examines case studies of possible trade routes between the potential energy exporters Morocco Saudi Arabia and Australia and the energy importers Germany and Japan. The work comprises the assessment of economic (levelized cost of electricity - LCOE) energetic (thermodynamic efficiency) and environmental (CO2 emissions) aspects which are quantified by the comprehensive model accounting for the most critical processes in the supply chain. The assessment is complemented by sensitivity and uncertainty analyses to identify the main drivers for energy costs. Iron is shown to be lower-cost and more efficient to transport in longer routes and for long-term storage but potentially more expensive and less efficient than H2 to produce and convert. Uncertainties related to the supply chain specifications and the sensitivity to the used variables indicate that the path to viable energy carriers fundamentally depends on efficient synthesis conversion storage and transport. A break-even analysis demonstrated that clean energy carriers could be competitive with conventional energy carriers at low renewable energy prices while carbon taxes might be needed to level the playing field. Thereby green iron shows potential to become an important energy carrier for long-distance trade in a globalized clean energy market.
What is Stored, Why, and How? Mental Models, Knowledge, and Public Acceptance of Hydrogen Storage

Although electricity storage plays a decisive role for the German “Energiewende” and it has become evident that the successful diffusion of technologies is not only a question of technical feasibility but also of social acceptance research on electricity storage technologies from a social science point of view is still scarce. This study therefore empirically explores laypersons’ mindsets and knowledge related to storage technologies focusing on hydrogen. While the results indicate overall supportive attitudes and trust in hydrogen storage some misconceptions a lack of information as well as concerns were identified which should be addressed in future communication concepts.
Leakage and Diffusion Characteristics of Underground Hydrogen Pipeline

Soil corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement are the main factors of hydrogen pipeline failure. The gas escapes diffuses and accumulating in the soil and entering the atmosphere when leak occurs. The mechanism of gas diffusion in buried pipelines is very complicated. Mastering the evolution law of hydrogen leakage diffusion is conducive to quickly locating the leakage point and reducing the loss. The leakage model of the underground hydrogen pipeline is established in this paper. Effect of leakage hole soil type pipeline pressure pipeline diameter on hydrogen leakage diffusion were investigated. The results show that when the hydrogen pipeline leaks the hydrogen concentration increases with the increase of leakage time showing a symmetrical distribution trend. With the pipeline pressure increase hydrogen leakage speed is accelerated and longitudinal diffusion gradually becomes the dominant direction. With the leakage diameter increases hydrogen leakage per unit of time increases sharply. Hydrogen diffuses more easily in sandy soil and diffusion speed concentration and range are higher than that in clay soil. The research content provides a reference and basis for the detection and evaluation of buried hydrogen pipeline leakage.

A Bibliometric and Visualized Overview of Hydrogen Embrittlement from 1997 to 2022

The mechanical properties of materials deteriorate when hydrogen embrittlement (HE) occurs seriously threatening the reliability and durability of the hydrogen system. Therefore it is important to summarize the status and development trends of research on HE. This study reviewed 6676 publications concerned with HE from 1997 to 2022 based on the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer was used to conduct the bibliometric analysis and produce visualizations of the publications. The results showed that the number of publications on HE increased after 2007 especially between 2017 and 2019. Japan was the country with the highest numbers of productive authors and citations of publications and the total number of citations of Japanese publications was 24589. Kyushu University was the most influential university and the total number of citations of Kyushu University publications was 7999. Akiyama was the most prolific and influential author publishing 88 publications with a total of 2565 citations. The USA South Korea and some European countries are also leading in HE research; these countries have published more than 200 publications. It was also found that the HE publications generally covered five topics: “Hydrogen embrittlement in different materials” “Effect of hydrogen on mechanical properties of materials” “Effect of alloying elements or microstructure on hydrogen embrittlement” “Hydrogen transport” and “Characteristics and mechanisms of hydrogen related failures”. Research hotspots included “Fracture failure behavior and analysis” “Microstructure” “Hydrogen diffusion and transport” “Mechanical properties” “Hydrogen resistance” and so on. These covered the basic methods and purposes of HE research. Finally the distribution of the main subject categories of the publications was determined and these categories covered various topics and disciplines. This study establishes valuable reference information for the application and development of HE research and provides a convenient resource to help researchers and scholars understand the development trends and research directions in this field.
Natural Iron Ores for Large-scale Thermochemical Hydrogen and Energy Storage

A stable energy supply will require balancing the fluctuations of renewable energy generation due to the transition to renewable energy sources. Intraday and seasonal storage systems are often limited to local geographical or infrastructural circumstances. This study experimentally verifies the application of inexpensive and abundant natural iron ores for energy storage with combined hydrogen and heat release. The incorporated iron oxides are reduced with hydrogen from electrolysis to store energy in chemically bonded form. The on–demand reoxidation releases either pure hydrogen or high-temperature heat as valuable products. Natural iron ores as storage material are beneficial as the specific costs are lower by an order of magnitude compared to synthetic iron oxide-based materials. Suitable iron ores were tested in TG analysis and in a 1 kW fixed-bed reactor. Siderite a carbonate iron ore was verified as promising candidate as it shows significantly lower reaction temperatures and twice the storage capacity over other commercial iron ores such as ilmenite. The specific storage costs are as low as 80–150 $ per MWh hydrogen stored based on the experimental in-situ tests. The experimentally determined volumetric energy storage capacity for the bulk material was 1.7 and 1.8 MWh m− 3 for hydrogen and heat release respectively. The raw siderite ore was stable for over 50 consecutive cycles at operating temperatures of 500–600 ◦C in in-situ lifetime tests. The combination of high abundance low price and reasonable capacity can thus result in very low specific energy storage costs. The study proofs that suitable natural iron ores are an interesting economic solution for large-scale and seasonal energy storage systems.
A Bird’s-Eye View on Polymer-Based Hydrogen Carriers for Mobile Applications

Globally reducing CO2 emissions is an urgent priority. The hydrogen economy is a system that offers long-term solutions for a secure energy future and the CO2 crisis. From hydrogen production to consumption storing systems are the foundation of a viable hydrogen economy. Each step has been the topic of intense research for decades; however the development of a viable safe and efficient strategy for the storage of hydrogen remains the most challenging one. Storing hydrogen in polymer-based carriers can realize a more compact and much safer approach that does not require high pressure and cryogenic temperature with the potential to reach the targets determined by the United States Department of Energy. This review highlights an outline of the major polymeric material groups that are capable of storing and releasing hydrogen reversibly. According to the hydrogen storage results there is no optimal hydrogen storage system for all stationary and automotive applications so far. Additionally a comparison is made between different polymeric carriers and relevant solid-state hydrogen carriers to better understand the amount of hydrogen that can be stored and released realistically.
Effect of the High-Pressure Hydrogen Gas Exposure in the Silica-Filled EPDM Sealing Composites with Different Silica Content

With the increasing interest in hydrogen energy the stability of hydrogen storage facilities and components is emphasized. In this study we analyzed the effect of high-pressure hydrogen gas treatment in silica-filled EPDM composites with different silica contents. In detail cure characteristics crosslink density mechanical properties and hydrogen permeation properties were investigated. Results showed that material volume remaining hydrogen content and mechanical properties were changed after 96.3 MPa hydrogen gas exposure. With an increase in the silica content the crosslink density and mechanical properties increased but hydrogen permeability was decreased. After treatment high-silica-content composites showed lower volume change than low-silica-content composites. The crack damage due to the decompression caused a decrease in mechanical properties but high silica content can inhibit the reduction in mechanical properties. In particular EPDM/silica composites with a silica content of above 60 phr exhibited excellent resistance to hydrogen gas as no change in their physical and mechanical properties was observed.
Use of Existing Gas Infrastructure in European Hydrogen Economy

The rapidly increasing production volume of clean hydrogen creates challenges for transport infrastructure. This study improves understanding of hydrogen transport options in Europe and provides more detailed analysis on the prospects for hydrogen transport in Finland. Previous studies and ongoing pipeline projects were reviewed to identify potential and barriers to hydrogen transport. A fatigue life assessment tool was built because material challenges have been one of the main concerns of hydrogen transportation. Many European countries aim at utilizing existing gas infrastructure for hydrogen. Conducted studies and pilot facilities have provided promising results. Hydrogen reduces the fatigue life of the pipeline but existing pipelines can be used for hydrogen if pressure variation is maintained at a reasonable level and the maximum operation pressure is limited. Moreover the use of existing pipelines can reduce hydrogen transport costs but the suitability of every pipeline for hydrogen must be analyzed and several issues such as leakage leakage detection effects of hydrogen on pipeline assets and end users corrosion maintenance and metering of gas flow must be considered. The development of hydrogen transport will vary within countries depending on the structure of the existing gas infrastructure and on the future hydrogen use profile.
Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Diffusion in Cement Sheath of Wells Used for Underground Hydrogen Storage

The negative environmental impact of carbon emissions from fossil fuels has promoted hydrogen utilization and storage in underground structures. Hydrogen leakage from storage structures through wells is a major concern due to the small hydrogen molecules that diffuse fast in the porous well cement sheath. The second-order parabolic partial differential equation describing the hydrogen diffusion in well cement was solved numerically using the finite difference method (FDM). The numerical model was verified with an analytical solution for an ideal case where the matrix and fluid have invariant properties. Sensitivity analyses with the model revealed several possibilities. Based on simulation studies and underlying assumptions such as non-dissolvable hydrogen gas in water present in the cement pore spaces constant hydrogen diffusion coefficient cement properties such as porosity and saturation etc. hydrogen should take about 7.5 days to fully penetrate a 35 cm cement sheath under expected well conditions. The relatively short duration for hydrogen breakthrough in the cement sheath is mainly due to the small molecule size and high hydrogen diffusivity. If the hydrogen reaches a vertical channel behind the casing a hydrogen leak from the well is soon expected. Also the simulation result reveals that hydrogen migration along the axial direction of the cement column from a storage reservoir to the top of a 50 m caprock is likely to occur in 500 years. Hydrogen diffusion into cement sheaths increases with increased cement porosity and diffusion coefficient and decreases with water saturation (and increases with hydrogen saturation). Hence cement with a low water-to-cement ratio to reduce water content and low cement porosity is desirable for completing hydrogen storage wells.
Derivation and Validation of a Reference Data-based Real Gas Model for Hydrogen

Hydrogen plays an important role for the decarbonization of the energy sector. In its gaseous form it is stored at pressures of up to 1000 bar at which real gas effects become relevant. To capture these effects in numerical simulations accurate real gas models are required. In this work new correlation equations for relevant hydrogen properties are developed based on the Reference Fluid Thermodynamic and Transport Properties Database (REFPROP). Within the regarded temperature (150e400 K) and pressure (0.1e1000 bar) range this approach yields a substantially improved accuracy compared to other databased correlations. Furthermore the developed equations are validated in a numerical simulation of a critical flow Venturi nozzle. The results are in much better accordance with experimental data compared to a cubic equation of state model. In addition the simulation is even slightly faster.
Impact of Hydrogen Injection on Thermophysical Properties and Measurement Reliability in Natural Gas Networks

In the context of the European decarbonization strategy hydrogen is a key energy carrier in the medium to long term. The main advantages deriving from a greater penetration of hydrogen into the energy mix consist in its intrinsic characteristics of flexibility and integrability with alternative technologies for the production and consumption of energy. In particular hydrogen allows to: i) decarbonise end uses since it is a zero-emission energy carrier and can be produced with processes characterized by the absence of greenhouse gases emissions (e.g. water electrolysis); ii) help to balancing electricity grid supporting the integration of non-programmable renewable energy sources; iii) exploit the natural gas transmission and distribution networks as storage systems in overproduction periods. However the hydrogen injection into the natural gas infrastructures directly influences thermophysical properties of the gas mixture itself such as density calorific value Wobbe index speed of sound etc [1]. The change of the thermophysical properties of gaseous mixture in turn directly affects the end use service in terms of efficiency and safety as well as the metrological performance and reliability of the volume and gas quality measurement systems. In this paper the authors present the results of a study about the impact of hydrogen injection on the properties of the natural gas mixture. In detail the changes of the thermodynamic properties of the gaseous mixtures with different hydrogen content have been analysed. Moreover the theoretical effects of the aforementioned variations on the accuracy of the compressibility factor measurement have been also assessed.
Comparative Techno-economic Analysis of Large-scale Renewable Energy Storage Technologies

Energy storage is an effective way to address the instability of renewable energy generation modes such as wind and solar which are projected to play an important role in the sustainable and low-carbon society. Economics and carbon emissions are important indicators that should be thoroughly considered for evaluating the feasibility of energy storage technologies (ESTs). In this study we study two promising routes for large-scale renewable energy storage electrochemical energy storage (EES) and hydrogen energy storage (HES) via technical analysis of the ESTs. The levelized cost of storage (LCOS) carbon emissions and uncertainty assessments for EESs and HESs over the life cycle are conducted with full consideration of the critical links for these routes. In order to reduce the evaluation error we use the Monte Carlo method to derive a large number of data for estimating the economy and carbon emission level of ESTs based on the collected data. The results show that lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries show the lowest LCOS and carbon emissions at 0.314 US$ kWh-1 and 72.76 gCO2e kWh-1 compared with other batteries for EES. Different HES routes meaning different combinations of hydrogen production delivery and refueling methods show substantial differences in economics and the lowest LCOS and carbon emissions at 0.227 US$ kWh-1 and 61.63 gCO2e kWh-1 are achieved using HES routes that involve hydrogen production by alkaline electrolyzer (AE) delivery by hydrogen pipeline and corresponding refueling. The findings of this study suggest that HES and EES have comparable levels of economics and carbon emissions that should be both considered for large-scale renewable energy storage to achieve future decarbonization goals.
Hybrid Energy System Model in Matlab/Simulink Based on Solar Energy, Lithium‐Ion Battery and Hydrogen

In this work a model of an energy system based on photovoltaics as the main energy source and a hybrid energy storage consisting of a short‐term lithium‐ion battery and hydrogen as the long‐term storage facility is presented. The electrical and the heat energy circuits and resulting flows have been modelled. Therefore the waste heat produced by the electrolyser and the fuel cell have been considered and a heat pump was considered to cover the residual heat demand. The model is designed for the analysis of a whole year energy flow by using a time series of loads weather and heat profile as input. This paper provides the main set of equations to derive the component properties and describes the implementation into MATLAB/Simulink. The novel model was created for an energy flow simulation over one year. The results of the simulation have been verified by comparing them with well‐established simulation results from HOMER Energy. It turns out that the novel model is well suited for the analysis of the dynamic system behaviour. Moreover different characteristics to achieve an energy balance an ideal dimensioning for the particular use case and further research possibilities of hydrogen use in the residential sector are covered by the novel model.
A Technical Evaluation to Analyse of Potential Repurposing of Submarine Pipelines for Hydrogen and CCS Using Survival Analysis

The UK oil and gas sector is mature and a combination of a dwindling resource base and a move towards decarbonisation has led to lower investments and an increasing decommissioning bill. Many existing offshore assets are in the vicinity of potential renewable energy developments or low-carbon facilities. We propose a technical evaluation process to understand whether pipelines might be repurposed to reduce the costs of low-carbon energy investment and oil decommissioning. We identify survival analysis as an effective method to investigate the potential of pipelines repurposing based on historical failure records as it deals with acceptable levels of data gaps and does not require associated field costs for detailed inspection. It provides a close estimate of the anticipated remaining life when compared to feasibility studies. We use survival analysis to examine several repurposing case studies for low-carbon investments. It also demonstrates that several pipeline systems have the potential to operate safely beyond their design life. Detailed records of failure will allow for further development of this methodology in the future.
A Study of Hydrogen Embrittlement of SA-372 J Class High Pressure Hydrogen Storage Seamless Cylinder (≥100 MPA)

The spinning process will lead to changes in the micro-structure and mechanical properties of the materials in different positions of the high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinder which will show different hydrogen embrittlement resistance in the high-pressure hydrogen environment. In order to fully study the safety of hydrogen storage in large-volume seamless steel cylinders this chapter associates the influence of the forming process with the deterioration of a high-pressure hydrogen cylinder (≥100 MPa). The anti-hydrogen embrittlement of SA-372 grade J steel at different locations of the formed cylinders was studied experimentally in three cylinders. The hydrogen embrittlement experiments were carried out according to method A of ISO 11114-4:2005. The relationship between tensile strength microstructure and hydrogen embrittlement is analyzed which provides comprehensive and reliable data for the safety of hydrogen storage and transmission.
Mechanistic Evaluation of the Reservoir Engineering Performance for the Underground Hydrogen Storage in a Deep North Sea Aquifer

Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in aquifers salt caverns and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs allows for the storage of larger volumes of H2 compared to surface storage in vessels. In this work we investigate the impact of aquifer-related mechanisms and parameters on the performance of UHS in an associated North Sea aquifer using 3D numerical compositional simulations. Simulation results revealed that the aquifer's permeability heterogeneity has a significant impact on the H2 recovery efficiency where a more homogenous rock would lead to improved H2 productivity. The inclusion of relative permeability hysteresis resulted in a drop in the H2 injectivity and recovery due to H2 discontinuity inside the aquifer which leads to residual H2 during the withdrawal periods. In contrast the effects of hydrogen solubility and hydrogen diffusion were negligible when studied each in isolation from other factors. Hence it is essential to properly account for hysteresis and heterogeneity when evaluating UHS in aquifers.
Cushion Gas in Hydrogen Storage—A Costly CAPEX or a Valuable Resource for Energy Crises?

The geological storage of hydrogen is a seasonal energy storage solution and the storage capacity of saline aquifers is most appropriately defined by quantifying the amount of hydrogen that can be injected and reproduced over a relevant time period. Cushion gas stored in the reservoir to support the production of the working gas is a CAPEX which should be reduced to decrease implementation cost for gas storage. The cushion gas to working gas ratio provides a sufficiently accurate reflection of the storage efficiency with higher ratios equating to larger initial investments. This paper investigates how technical measures such as well configurations and adjustments to the operational size and schedule can reduce this ratio and the outcomes can inform optimisation strategies for hydrogen storage operations. Using a simplified open saline aquifer reservoir model hydrogen storage is simulated with a single injection and production well. The results show that the injection process is more sensitive to technical measures than the production process; a shorter perforation and a smaller well diameter increases the required cushion gas for the injection process but has little impact on the production. If the storage operation capacity is expanded and the working gas volume increased the required cushion gas to working gas ratio increases for injection reducing the efficiency of the injection process. When the reservoir pressure has more time to equilibrate less cushion gas is required. It is shown that cushion gas plays an important role in storage operations and that the tested optimisation strategies impart only minor effects on the production process however there is significant need for careful optimisation of the injection process. It is suggested that the recoverable part of the cushion gas could be seen as a strategic gas reserve which can be produced during an energy crisis. In this scenario the recoverable cushion gas could be owned by the state and the upfront costs for gas storage to the operator would be reduced making the implementation of more gas storage and the onset of hydrogen storage more attractive to investors.
