Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emission Assessment for Using Alternative Marine Fuels: A Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) Case Study
Dec 2022
Publication
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set decarbonisation goals for the shipping industry. As a result shipowners and operators are preparing to use low- or zero-carbon alternative fuels. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission performances are fundamental for choosing suitable marine fuels. However the current regulations adopt tank-to-wake (TTW) emission assessment methods that could misrepresent the total climate impacts of fuels. To better understand the well-to-wake (WTW) GHG emission performances this work applied the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to a very large crude carrier (VLCC) sailing between the Middle East and China to investigate the emissions. The life cycle GHG emission impacts of using alternative fuels including liquified natural gas (LNG) methanol and ammonia were evaluated and compared with using marine gas oil (MGO). The bunkering site of the VLCC was in Zhoushan port China. The MGO and LNG were imported from overseas while methanol and ammonia were produced in China. Four production pathways for methanol and three production pathways for ammonia were examined. The results showed that compared with MGO using fossil energy-based methanol and ammonia has no positive effect in terms of annual WTW GHG emissions. The emission reduction effects of fuels ranking from highest to lowest were full solar and battery-based methanol full solar and battery-based ammonia and LNG. Because marine ammonia-fuelled engines have not been commercialised laboratory data were used to evaluate the nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The GHG emission reduction potential of ammonia can be exploited more effectively if the N2O emitted from engines is captured and disposed of through after-treatment technologies. This paper discussed three scenarios of N2O emission abatement ratios of 30% 50% and 90%. The resulting emission reduction effects showed that using full solar and battery-based ammonia with 90% N2O abatement performs better than using full solar and battery-based methanol. The main innovation of this work is realising the LCA GHG emission assessment for a deep-sea ship.
Low-carbon Economic Operation of IES Based on Life Cycle Method and Hydrogen Energy Utilization
Aug 2023
Publication
The Integrated Energy System (IES) that coordinates multiple energy sources can effectively improve energy utilization and is of great significance to achieving energy conservation and emission reduction goals. In this context a low-carbon and economic dispatch model for IES is proposed. Firstly a hydrogen energy-based IES (H2-IES) is constructed to refine the utilization process of hydrogen energy. Secondly the carbon emissions of different energy chains throughout their life cycle are analyzed using the life cycle assessment method (LCA) and the carbon emissions of the entire energy supply and demand chain are considered. Finally a staged carbon trading mechanism is adopted to promote energy conservation and emission reduction. Based on this an IES low-carbon and economic dispatch model is constructed with the optimization goal of minimizing the sum of carbon trading costs energy procurement costs and hydrogen sales revenue while considering network constraints and constraints on key equipment. By analyzing the model under different scenarios the introduction of life cycle assessment staged carbon trading and hydrogen energy utilization is shown to promote low-carbon and economic development of the comprehensive energy system.

Publication
With the decarbonization and electrification of modern railway transportation the demand for both the highcapacity electrical energy and hydrogen fuel energy is increasingly high. A novel scheme was proposed from liquid hydrogen production by surplus wind and solar energy to liquid hydrogen-electricity hybrid energy transmission for railway transportation. The 100 MW hybrid energy transmission pipeline was designed with the 10 kA/1.5 kV superconducting DC cable for electricity and cryogenic layers for liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen showing strong capability in transmitting “electricity + cold energy + chemical energy” simultaneously. Economic evaluation was performed with respect to the energy equipment capacity and costs with sensitivity and profitability analysis. With the discount rate 8% the dynamic payback period of the hybrid energy pipeline was 7.1 years. Results indicated that the shortest dynamic payback period of the hybrid energy pipeline was 4.8 years with the maximum transmission distance 93 km. Overall this article shows the novel concept and design of liquid hydrogen-electricity hybrid energy pipelines and proves the technical and economic feasibilities for future bulk hybrid energy transmission for railway transportation.
Leakage and Diffusion Characteristics of Underground Hydrogen Pipeline
Jun 2023
Publication
Soil corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement are the main factors of hydrogen pipeline failure. The gas escapes diffuses and accumulating in the soil and entering the atmosphere when leak occurs. The mechanism of gas diffusion in buried pipelines is very complicated. Mastering the evolution law of hydrogen leakage diffusion is conducive to quickly locating the leakage point and reducing the loss. The leakage model of the underground hydrogen pipeline is established in this paper. Effect of leakage hole soil type pipeline pressure pipeline diameter on hydrogen leakage diffusion were investigated. The results show that when the hydrogen pipeline leaks the hydrogen concentration increases with the increase of leakage time showing a symmetrical distribution trend. With the pipeline pressure increase hydrogen leakage speed is accelerated and longitudinal diffusion gradually becomes the dominant direction. With the leakage diameter increases hydrogen leakage per unit of time increases sharply. Hydrogen diffuses more easily in sandy soil and diffusion speed concentration and range are higher than that in clay soil. The research content provides a reference and basis for the detection and evaluation of buried hydrogen pipeline leakage.

Research on Energy Management Method of Fuel Cell/Supercapacitor Hybrid Trams Based on Optimal Hydrogen Consumption
Jul 2023
Publication
In this paper based on the operating states and characteristics of fuel cell/supercapacitor hybrid trams an optimal hydrogen energy management method is proposed. This method divides the operating states into two parts: traction state and non-traction state. In the traction state the real-time loss function of the hybrid power system which is used to obtain the fuel cell optimal output power under the different demand powers and supercapacitor voltage is established. In the non-traction state the constant-power charging method which is obtained by solving the power-voltage charging model is used to ensure the supercapacitor voltage of the beginning-state and the end-state in an entire operation cycle are the same. The RT-LAB simulation platform is used to verify that the proposed method has the ability to control the hybrid real-time system. Using the comparative experiment between the proposed method and power-follow method the results show that the proposed method offers a significant improvement in both fuel cell output stability and hydrogen consumption in a full operation cycle.
Analysis of Hydrogen Gas Injection at Various Compositions in an Existing Natural Gas Pipeline
Jul 2021
Publication
The lack of hydrogen (H2) transportation infrastructure restricts the development of the H2 industry. Owing to the high investment of building specific facilities using existing natural gas (NG) pipelines to transport a blend of H2 and NG (H2NG) is a viable means of transportation and approach for large-scale long-time storage. However variation in the thermo-physical properties of an H2NG blend will impact the performance of pipeline appliances. To address the gaps in H2 transmission via an NG system in the context of energy consumption in the present paper a one-dimensional pipeline model is proposed to predict the blended flow in a real existing pipeline (Shan–Jing I China). The data of NG components were derived from real gas fields. Furthermore the influence of H2 fractions on pipeline energy coefficient and the layout of pressurization stations are comprehensively analyzed. In addition the case of intermediate gas injection is investigated and the effects of injection positions are studied. This study serves as a useful reference for the design of an H2NG pipeline system. The present study reveals that with the increasing in H2 fraction the distance between pressure stations increases. Furthermore when the arrangement of original pressure stations is maintained overpressure occur. Intermediate gas injection results in the inlet pressure of subsequent pressurization stations reducing. Using existing pipeline network to transport H2NG it is necessary to make appropriate adjustment.
A Comparison of Well-to-Wheels Energy Use and Emissions of Hydrogen Fuel Cell, Electric, LNG, and Diesel-Powered Logistics Vehicles in China
Jul 2023
Publication
Global energy and environmental issues are becoming increasingly serious and the promotion of clean energy and green transportation has become a common goal for all countries. In the logistics industry traditional fuels such as diesel and natural gas can no longer meet the requirements of energy and climate change. Hydrogen fuel cell logistics vehicles are expected to become the mainstream vehicles for future logistics because of their “zero carbon” advantages. The GREET model is computer simulation software developed by the Argonne National Laboratory in the USA. It is extensively utilized in research pertaining to the energy and environmental impact of vehicles. This research study examines four types of logistics vehicles: hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) electric vehicles LNG-fueled vehicles and diesel-fueled vehicles. Diesel-fueled logistics vehicles are currently the most abundant type of vehicle in the logistics sector. LNG-fueled logistics vehicles are considered as a short-term alternative to diesel logistics vehicles while electric logistics vehicles are among the most popular types of new-energy vehicles currently. We analyze and compare their well-to-wheels (WTW) energy consumption and emissions with the help of GREET software and conduct lifecycle assessments (LCAs) of the four types of vehicles to analyze their energy and environmental benefits. When comparing the energy consumption of the four vehicle types electric logistics vehicles (EVs) have the lowest energy consumption with slightly lower energy consumption than FCVs. When comparing the nine airborne pollutant emissions of the four vehicle types the emissions of the FCVs are significantly lower than those of spark-ignition internal combustion engine logistics vehicles (SI ICEVs) compression-ignition direct-injection internal combustion engine logistics vehicles (CIDI ICEVs) and EVs. This study fills a research gap regarding the energy consumption and environmental impact of logistics vehicles in China.

Dec 2022
Publication
As a clean low-carbon efficient and renewable energy source hydrogen has gradually become an important energy carrier to combat climate change and achieve sustainable development in the world. China is now facing the stress of realizing the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals where hydrogen will play a significant role. Against this backdrop to develop China's hydrogen strategy under the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals this paper explores the hydrogen resource endowment in China presents the concepts such as Hydrogen Ethics and the Hu's Hydrogen Line and discusses the status quo and existing advantages in hydrogen production storage transport and utilization in China. Six major obstacles and challenges that China's hydrogen energy industry is facing are pointed out i.e. cost problem inadequate hydrogen infrastructures low energy efficiency mismatching the development progress of renewable energy insufficient market demand shortcomings in technology and imperfect policy system. Finally five policy suggestions for the future development of China's hydrogen energy industry are proposed as follows: (1) make an action plan as a response to the national hydrogen development plan; (2) build an international and domestic double-cycle hydrogen economic system; (3) incorporate hydrogen into the establishment of a clean low-carbon safe and efficient energy system; (4) accelerate the technological innovation to form advanced hydrogen technologies; and (5) construct hydrogen-oriented industrial clusters/parks to expand the hydrogen utilization market. It is concluded that for meeting the carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals China should leverage the dual advantages of hydrogen as an energy carrier and an industrial raw material allowing the hydrogen industry to play a synergistic role in ensuring the country's energy security promoting the socio-economic transformation and upgrading and protecting the ecological environment thereby providing a technical option and support for China to achieve the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality.

Hydrogen Production System Using Alkaline Water Electrolysis Adapting to Fast Fluctuating Photovoltaic Power
Apr 2023
Publication
Using photovoltaic (PV) energy to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly approach that results in no contamination making hydrogen a completely clean energy source. Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is an excellent method of hydrogen production due to its long service life low cost and high reliability. However the fast fluctuations of photovoltaic power cannot integrate well with alkaline water electrolyzers. As a solution to the issues caused by the fluctuating power a hydrogen production system comprising a photovoltaic array a battery and an alkaline electrolyzer along with an electrical control strategy and energy management strategy is proposed. The energy management strategy takes into account the predicted PV power for the upcoming hour and determines the power flow accordingly. By analyzing the characteristics of PV panels and alkaline water electrolyzers and imposing the proposed strategy this system offers an effective means of producing hydrogen while minimizing energy consumption and reducing damage to the electrolyzer. The proposed strategy has been validated under various scenarios through simulations. In addition the system’s robustness was demonstrated by its ability to perform well despite inaccuracies in the predicted PV power.
P2H Modeling and Operation in the Microgrid Under Coupled Electricity–Hydrogen Markets
Dec 2021
Publication
The uncertainty and volatility of wind power have led to large-scale wind curtailment during grid connections. The adoption of power-to-hydrogen (P2H) system in a microgrid (MG) can mitigate the renewable curtailment by hydrogen conversion and storage. This paper conducts unified modeling for different types of P2H systems and considers the multi-energy trading in a hydrogen-coupled power market. The proposed bi-level equilibrium model is beneficial to minimize the energy cost of microgrids. Firstly a microgrid operation model applied to different P2H systems including an alkaline electrolysis cell (AEC) a proton exchange membrane electrolysis cell (PEMEC) or a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is proposed at the upper level. Secondly an electricity market–clearing model and a hydrogen market model are constructed at the lower level. Then the diagonalization algorithm is adopted to solve the multi-market equilibrium problem. Finally case studies based on an IEEE 14-bus system are conducted to validate the proposed model and the results show that the microgrid with a P2H system could gain more profits and help increase the renewable penetration.
Study on the Dynamic Optimal Control Strategy of an Electric-Hydrogen Hybrid Energy Storage System for a Direct Drive Wave Power Generation System
Jul 2023
Publication
A direct drive wave power generation system (DDWPGS) has the advantages of a simple structure and easy deployment and is the first choice to provide electricity for islands and operation platforms in the deep sea. However due to the off-grid the source and load cannot be matched so accommodation is an important issue. Hydrogen storage is the optimal choice for offshore wave energy accommodation. Therefore aiming at the source-load mismatch problem of the DDWPGS an electric-hydrogen hybrid energy storage system (HESS) for the DDWPGS is designed in this paper. Based on the characteristics of the devices in the electric-hydrogen HESS a new dynamic power allocation strategy and its control strategy are proposed. Firstly empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is utilized to allocate the power fluctuations that need to be stabilized. Secondly with the state of charge (SOC) of the battery and the operating characteristics of the alkaline electrolyzer being considered the power assignments of the battery and the electrolyzer are determined using the rule-based method. In addition model predictive control (MPC) with good tracking performance is used to adjust the output power of the battery and electrolyzer. Finally the supercapacitor (SC) is controlled to maintain the DC bus voltage while also balancing the system’s power. A simulation was established to verify the feasibility of the designed system. The results show that the electric-hydrogen HESS can stabilize the power fluctuations dynamically when the DDWPGS captures instantaneous power. Moreover its control strategy can not only reduce the start-stop times of the alkaline electrolyzer but also help the energy storage devices to maintain a good state and extend the service life.

Alongside the rapid expansion of wind power installation in China wind curtailment is also mounting rapidly due to China’s energy endowment imbalance. The hydrogen-based wind-energy storage system becomes an alternative to solve the puzzle of wind power surplus. This article introduced China’s energy storage industry development and summarized the advantages of hydrogen-based wind-energy storage systems. From the perspective of resource conservation it estimated the environmental benefits of hydrogen-based wind-energy storages. This research also builds a valuation model based on the Real Options Theory to capture the distinctive flexible charging and discharging features of the hydrogen-based wind-energy storage systems. Based on the model simulation results including the investment value and operation decision of the hydrogen energy storage system with different electricity prices system parameters and different levels of subsidies are presented. The results show that the hydrogen storage system fed with the surplus wind power can annually save approximately 2.19–3.29 million tons of standard coal consumption. It will reduce 3.31–4.97 million tons of CO2 SO2 NOx and PM saving as much as 286.6–429.8 million yuan of environmental cost annually on average. The hydrogen-based wind-energy storage system’s value depends on the construction investment and operating costs and is also affected by the meanreverting nature and jumps or spikes in electricity prices. The market-oriented reform of China’s power sector is conducive to improve hydrogen-based wind-energy storage systems’ profitability. At present subsidies are still essential to reduce initial investment and attract enterprises to participate in hydrogen energy storage projects.
Technology Portfolio Assessment for Near-zero Emission Iron and Steel Industry in China
May 2023
Publication
China aims to peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060; hence industrial sectors in China are keen to figure out appropriate pathways to support the national target of carbon neutrality. The objective of this study is to explore near-zero emission pathways for the steel industry of China through a detailed technology assessment. The innovative technology development has been simulated using the AIM-China/steel model developed by including material-based technologies and optimal cost analysis. Six scenarios have been given in terms of different levels of production output emission reduction and carbon tax. Near-zero emission and carbon tax scenarios have shown that China’s steel industry can achieve near-zero emission using electric furnaces and hydrogen-based direct reduction iron technologies with policy support. Based on these technologies minimised production costs have been calculated revealing that the steel produced by these technologies is cost-effective. Moreover the feedstock cost can play a key role in these technology portfolios especially the cost of scrap iron ore and hydrogen. In addition the feedstock supply can have strong regional effects and can subsequently impact the allocation of steelmaking in the future. Therefore China can achieve near-zero emissions in the steel industry and electric furnace and hydrogen-based direct reduction iron technologies are crucial to achieving them.

Publication
The green hydrogen industry highly efficient and safe is endowed with flexible production and low carbon emissions. It is conducive to building a low-carbon efficient and clean energy structure optimizing the energy industry system and promoting the strategic transformation of energy development and enhancing energy security. In order to achieve carbon emission peaking by 2030 and neutrality by 2060 (dual carbon goals) China is vigorously promoting the green hydrogen industry. Based on an analysis of the green hydrogen industry policies of the U.S. the EU and Japan this paper explores supporting policies issued by Chinese central and local authorities and examines the inherent advantages of China’s green hydrogen industry. After investigating and analyzing the basis for the development of the green hydrogen industry in China we conclude that China has enormous potential including abundant renewable energy resources as well as commercialization experience with renewable energy robust infrastructure and technological innovation capacity demand for large-scale applications of green hydrogen in traditional industries etc. Despite this China’s green hydrogen industry is still in its early stage and has encountered bottlenecks in its development including a lack of clarity on the strategic role and position of the green hydrogen industry low competitiveness of green hydrogen production heavy reliance on imports of PEMs perfluorosulfonic acid resins (PFSR) and other core components the development dilemma of the industry chain lack of installed capacity for green hydrogen production and complicated administrative permission etc. This article therefore proposes that an appropriate development road-map and integrated administration supervision systems including safety supervision will systematically promote the green hydrogen industry. Enhancing the core technology and equipment of green hydrogen and improving the green hydrogen industry chain will be an adequate way to reduce dependence on foreign technologies lowering the price of green hydrogen products through the scale effect and thus expanding the scope of application of green hydrogen. Financial support mechanisms such as providing tax breaks and project subsidies will encourage enterprises to carry out innovative technological research on and invest in the green hydrogen industry.

A Techno-economic Analysis of Cross-regional Renewable Hydrogen Supply Routes in China
Jun 2023
Publication
The cross-regional renewable hydrogen supply is significant for China to resolve the uneven distribution of renewable energy and decarbonize the transportation sector. Yet the economic comparison of various hydrogen supply routes remains obscure. This paper conducts a techno-economic analysis on six hydrogen supply routes for hydrogen refueling stations including gas-hydrogen tube-trailer gas-hydrogen pipeline liquid-hydrogen truck natural gas pipeline MeOH truck and NH3 truck. Furthermore the impacts of three critical factors are examined including electrolyzer selection transportation distance and electricity price. The results indicate that with a transport distance of 2000 km the natural gas pipeline route offers the lowest cost while the gas-hydrogen tube-trailer route is not economically feasible. The gas-hydrogen pipeline route shows outstanding cost competitiveness between 200 and 2000 km while it is greatly influenced by the utilization rate. The liquid-hydrogen truck route demonstrates great potential with the electricity price decreasing. This study may provide guidance for the development of the cross-regional renewable hydrogen supply for hydrogen refueling stations in China.

In the vehicle-to-everything scenario the fuel cell bus can accurately obtain the surrounding traffic information and quickly optimize the energy management problem while controlling its own safe and efficient driving. This paper proposes an energy management strategy (EMS) that considers speed control based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) in complex traffic scenarios. Using SUMO simulation software (Version 1.15.0) a two-lane urban expressway is designed as a traffic scenario and a hydrogen fuel cell bus speed control and energy management system is designed through the soft actor–critic (SAC) algorithm to effectively reduce the equivalent hydrogen consumption and fuel cell output power fluctuation while ensuring the safe efficient and smooth driving of the vehicle. Compared with the SUMO–IDM car-following model the average speed of vehicles is kept the same and the average acceleration and acceleration change value decrease by 10.22% and 11.57% respectively. Compared with deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) the average speed is increased by 1.18% and the average acceleration and acceleration change value are decreased by 4.82% and 5.31% respectively. In terms of energy management the hydrogen consumption of SAC–OPT-based energy management strategy reaches 95.52% of that of the DP algorithm and the fluctuation range is reduced by 32.65%. Compared with SAC strategy the fluctuation amplitude is reduced by 15.29% which effectively improves the durability of fuel cells.

Jun 2023
Publication
Energy storage is an effective way to address the instability of renewable energy generation modes such as wind and solar which are projected to play an important role in the sustainable and low-carbon society. Economics and carbon emissions are important indicators that should be thoroughly considered for evaluating the feasibility of energy storage technologies (ESTs). In this study we study two promising routes for large-scale renewable energy storage electrochemical energy storage (EES) and hydrogen energy storage (HES) via technical analysis of the ESTs. The levelized cost of storage (LCOS) carbon emissions and uncertainty assessments for EESs and HESs over the life cycle are conducted with full consideration of the critical links for these routes. In order to reduce the evaluation error we use the Monte Carlo method to derive a large number of data for estimating the economy and carbon emission level of ESTs based on the collected data. The results show that lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries show the lowest LCOS and carbon emissions at 0.314 US$ kWh-1 and 72.76 gCO2e kWh-1 compared with other batteries for EES. Different HES routes meaning different combinations of hydrogen production delivery and refueling methods show substantial differences in economics and the lowest LCOS and carbon emissions at 0.227 US$ kWh-1 and 61.63 gCO2e kWh-1 are achieved using HES routes that involve hydrogen production by alkaline electrolyzer (AE) delivery by hydrogen pipeline and corresponding refueling. The findings of this study suggest that HES and EES have comparable levels of economics and carbon emissions that should be both considered for large-scale renewable energy storage to achieve future decarbonization goals.

Through the example analysis it is verified that the calculation method proposed in this article can not only realize the online power balance optimization of the electric–hydrogen coupling energy block but also effectively quantify the operation flexibility margin of the electric–hydrogen coupling energy block.
Investment Timing Analysis of Hydrogen-Refueling Stations and the Case of China: Independent or Co-Operative Investment?
Jun 2023
Publication
The investment in hydrogen-refueling stations (HRS) is key to the development of a hydrogen economy. This paper focuses on the decision-making for potential investors faced with the thought-provoking question of when the optimal timing to invest in HRS is. To fill the gap that exists due to the fact that few studies explain why HRS investment timing is critical we expound that earlier investment in HRS could induce the first mover advantages of the technology diffusion theory. Additionally differently from the previous research that only considered that HRS investment is just made by one individual firm we innovatively examine the HRS co-investment made by two different firms. Accordingly we compare these two optional investment modes and determine which is better considering either independent investment or co-operative investment. We then explore how the optimal HRS investment timing could be figured out under conditions of uncertainty with the real options approach. Given the Chinese HRS case under the condition of demand uncertainty the hydrogen demand required for triggering investment is viewed as the proxy for investment timing. Based on analytical and numerical results we conclude that one-firm independent investment is better than two-firm cooperative investment to develop HRS not only in terms of the earlier investment timing but also in terms of the attribute for dealing with the uncertainty. Finally we offer recommendations including stabilizing the hydrogen demand for decreasing uncertainty and accelerating firms’ innovation from both technological and strategic perspectives in order to ensure firms can make HRS investments on their own.
Heat Transfer Models for Refueling Safety of Hydrogen Vehicle
Sep 2021
Publication
Due to the simple structure and quick refueling process of the compressed hydrogen storage tank it is widely used in fuel cell vehicles at present. However temperature rise may lead to a safety problem during charging of a compressed hydrogen storage tank. To ensure the refueling safety the thermal effects need to be studied carefully during hydrogen refueling process. In this paper based on the mass and energy balance equations a general heat transfer model for refueling process of compressed hydrogen storage tank is established. According to the geometric model of the tank wall structure we have built three lumped parameter models: single-zone (hydrogen) dual-zone (hydrogen and tank wall) and triple-zone (hydrogen tank wall liner and shell) model. These three lumped parameter models are compared with U.S. Naval gas charging model and SAE MC method based refueling model. Under adiabatic and diathermic conditions four models are built in Matlab/Simulink software to simulate the hydrogen refueling process under corresponding conditions. These four models are: single-zone singletemperature (hydrogen) dual-zone single-temperature (hydrogen) dual-zone dual-temperature (hydrogen and tank wall temperatures) and triple-zone triple-temperature (hydrogen tank wall liner and tank wall shell temperatures). By comparing the analytical solution and numerical solution the temperature rise of the compressed hydrogen storage tank can be described. The analytical and numerical solutions on the heat transfer during hydrogen refueling process will provide theoretical guidance at actual refueling station so as to improve the refueling efficiency and to enhance the refueling safety.

The paper explores options for a 2050 carbon free energy future for India. Onshore wind and solar sources are projected as the dominant primary contributions to this objective. The analysis envisages an important role for so-called green hydrogen produced by electrolysis fueled by these carbon free energy sources. This hydrogen source can be used to accommodate for the intrinsic variability of wind and solar complementing opportunities for storage of power by batteries and pumped hydro. The green source of hydrogen can be used also to supplant current industrial uses of grey hydrogen produced in the Indian context largely from natural gas with important related emissions of CO2. The paper explores further options for use of green hydrogen to lower emissions from otherwise difficult to abate sectors of both industry and transport. The analysis is applied to identify the least cost options to meet India’s zero carbon future.

In this paper the current power supply systems used in UAVs are comprehensively reviewed and analyzed on the existing power configurations and the energy management systems. It is identified that a single type of electrochemical power source is not enough to support a UAV to achieve a long-haul flight; hence a hybrid power system architecture is necessary. To make use of the advantages of each type of power source to increase the endurance and achieve good performance of the UAVs the hybrid systems containing two or three types of power sources (fuel cell battery solar cell and supercapacitor) have to be developed. In this regard the selection of an appropriate hybrid power structure with the optimized energy management system is critical for the efficient operation of a UAV. It is found that the data-driven models with artificial intelligence (AI) are promising in intelligent energy management. This paper can provide insights and guidelines for future research and development into the design and fabrication of the advanced UAV power systems.

Jun 2022
Publication
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are regarded as a promising solution to the problems of energy security and environmental pollution. However the technology is under development and the hydrogen consumption is uncertain. The quantitative evaluation of life cycle energy consumption pollution emissions of current and future FCVs in China involves complex processes and parameters. Therefore this study addresses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of FCV and focuses on the key parameters of FCV production and different hydrogen production methods which include steam methane reforming catalysis decomposition methanol steam reforming electrolysis–photovoltaic (PV) and electrolysis Chinese electricity grid mix (CN). Sensitivity analysis of bipolar plate glider mass power density fuel cell system efficiency and energy control strategy are performed whilst accounting for different assumption scenarios. The results show that all impact assessment indicators will decrease by 28.8– 44.3% under the 2030 positive scenario for the production of FCVs. For cradle-grave FCVs the use of hydrogen from electrolysis operated with photovoltaic power reduces global warming potential (GWP) by almost 76.4% relative to steam methane reforming. By contrast the use of hydrogen from electrolysis operated with the Chinese electricity grid mix results in an increase in GWP of almost 158.3%.

Apr 2022
Publication
This study investigates and controls the optimal operating oxygen excess ratio (OER) for PEMFC which effectively prevents oxygen starvation and improves the hydrogen economy of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Firstly the PEMFC output characteristic model and the five-order nonlinear air supply system model are established. Moreover an adaptive algebraic observer was developed to observe the partial pressure of gas in PEMFC and further reconstruct OER. Secondly to achieve the minimum hydrogen consumption under the required power the reference OER is determined by analyzing the PEMFC system output power with its minimum current. Finally the super-twisting algorithm is adopted to track reference OER. Simulation results show that the average absolute observation errors of oxygen nitrogen and cathode pressures under the Highway Fuel Economy Test are 1351.1 Pa (5.1%) 1724.2 Pa (0.9%) and 409.9 Pa (1.6%) respectively. The OER adjust average absolute error is 0.03. Compared with the commonly used fixed OER (e.g. OER of 1.5 and 2.3) the optimal OER strategy can reduce the hydrogen consumption of the PEMFC system by 5.2% and 1.8% respectively. Besides a DSP hardware in loop test is conducted to show the real-time performance of the proposed optimal method.
Experimental Study on the Cycle Variation Characteristics of Direct Injection Hydrogen Engine
Jun 2022
Publication
Hydrogen energy is an important technical route to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Direct injection hydrogen engine is one of the ways of hydrogen energy application. It has the advantages of high thermal efficiency and limit/reduce abnormal combustion phenomena. In order to explore the cycle characteristics of direct injection hydrogen engine based on a 2.0L direct injection hydrogen engine an experimental study on the cycle characteristics of direct injection hydrogen engine was carried out. The experimental results show that cycle variation increases from 0.67% to 1.02% with the increasing of engine speed. The cycle variation decreases from 1.52% to 0.64% with the increasing of engine load. As the equivalence ratio increases the cycle variation first decreases significantly from 2.52% to 0.35% and then stabilizes. The ignition advance angle has a better angle to minimize the cycle variation. An experimental study on the influence of the start of injection on the cycle variation was carried out. As the engine speed/engine load is 2000rpm/4bar the cycle variation increases from 0.72% to 2.42% with the start of injection changing from -280°CA to -180°CA; then rapidly decreases to 0.99% and then increases to 2.26% with the start of injection changing from -180°CA to -100°CA. The experimental results show that SOI could cause significant influence on cycle variation because of intake valve closing and shortening mixing time and both the process of intake valve closing and lagging the SOI could cause the cycle variation to increase. The SOI remarkably affects the cycle variation at low engine load/equivalence ratio and high engine speed. This study lays the foundation for the follow-up research of hydrogen engine performance matching of the cycle variation.
A Review of the MSCA ITN ECOSTORE—Novel Complex Metal Hydrides for Efficient and Compact Storage of Renewable Energy as Hydrogen and Electricity
Mar 2020
Publication
Hydrogen as an energy carrier is very versatile in energy storage applications. Developments in novel sustainable technologies towards a CO2-free society are needed and the exploration of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) as well as solid-state hydrogen storage applications based on metal hydrides can provide solutions for such technologies. However there are still many technical challenges for both hydrogen storage material and ASSBs related to designing low-cost materials with low-environmental impact. The current materials considered for all-solid-state batteries should have high conductivities for Na+ Mg2+ and Ca2+ while Al3+-based compounds are often marginalised due to the lack of suitable electrode and electrolyte materials. In hydrogen storage materials the sluggish kinetic behaviour of solid-state hydride materials is one of the key constraints that limit their practical uses. Therefore it is necessary to overcome the kinetic issues of hydride materials before discussing and considering them on the system level. This review summarizes the achievements of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) innovative training network (ITN) ECOSTORE the aim of which was the investigation of different aspects of (complex) metal hydride materials. Advances in battery and hydrogen storage materials for the efficient and compact storage of renewable energy production are discussed.
Novel Ways for Hydrogen Production Based on Methane Steam and Dry Reforming Integrated with Carbon Capture
Sep 2022
Publication
The combination of methane steam reforming technology and CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) technology has great potential to reduce carbon emissions in the process of hydrogen production. Different from the traditional idea of capturing CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) in the exhaust gas with high work consumption this study simultaneously focuses on CO2 separation from fuel gas and recycling. A new hydrogen production system is developed by methane steam reforming coupled with carbon capture. Separated and captured high-purity carbon dioxide could be recycled for methane dry reforming; on this basis a new methane-dry-reforming-driven hydrogen production system with a carbon dioxide reinjection unit is innovatively proposed. In this study the energy flow and irreversible loss in the two newly developed systems are analyzed in detail through energy and exergy balance analysis. The advantages are explored from the perspective of hydrogen production rate natural gas consumption and work consumption. In addition in consideration of the integrated performance an optimal design analysis was conducted. In terms of hydrogen production the new system based on dry reforming is better with an advantage of 2.41%; however it is worth noting that the comprehensive thermal performance of the new steam reforming system is better reaching 10.95%. This study provides new ideas for hydrogen production from a low carbon emission perspective and also offers a new direction for future distributed energy system integration.
Numerical Simulation on Pressure Dynamic Response Characteristics of Hydrogen Systems for Fuel Cell Vehicles
Mar 2022
Publication
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is known as one of the most promising energy sources for electric vehicles. A hydrogen system is required to provide hydrogen to the stack in time to meet the flow and pressure requirements according to the power requirements. In this study a 1-D model of a hydrogen system including the fuel cell stack was established. Two modes one with and one without a proportion integration differentiation (PID) control strategy were applied to analyze the pressure characteristics and performance of the PEMFC. The results showed that the established model could be well verified with experimental data. The anode pressure fluctuation with a PID control strategy was more stable which reduced the damage to the fuel cell stack caused by sudden changes of anode pressure. In addition the performance of the stack with the PID control mode was slightly improved. There was an inflection point for hydrogen utilization; the hydrogen utilization rate was higher under the mode without PID control when the current density was greater than 0.4 A/cm2 . What is more a hierarchical control strategy was proposed which made the pressure difference between the anode and cathode meet the stack working requirements and more importantly maintained the high hydrogen utilization of the hydrogen system.
Coupling Combustion Simulation and Primary Evaluation of an Asymmetric Motion Diesel Pilot Hydrogen Engine
Jul 2022
Publication
The thermal efficiency and combustion of conventional hydrogen engines cannot be optimized and improved by its symmetric reciprocating. This article introduces an asymmetric motion hydrogen engine (AHE) and investigates its combustion characteristics using diesel pilot ignition. A dynamic model is firstly proposed to describe the asymmetric motion of the AHE and then it is coupled into a multidimensional model for combustion simulation. The effect of asymmetric motion on the AHE combustion is also analyzed by comparing with a corresponding conventional symmetric hydrogen engine (SHE). The results show that the AHE moves slower in compression and faster in expansion than the SHE which brings about higher hydrogen-air mixing level for combustion. The asymmetric motion delays diesel injection to ignite the AHE and its combustion appears later than the SHE which leads to lower pressure and temperature for reducing NO formation. However the AHE faster expansion has a more severe post-combustion effect to reduce isovolumetric heat release level and decrease the energy efficiency.
Cost-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen for China’s Fuel Cell Transportation Field
Dec 2020
Publication
China has become a major market for hydrogen used in fuel cells in the transportation field. It is key to control the cost of hydrogen to open up the Chinese market. The development status and trends of China’s hydrogen fuel industry chain were researched. A hydrogen energy cost model was established in this paper from five aspects: raw material cost fixed cost of production hydrogen purification cost carbon trading cost and transportation cost. The economic analysis of hydrogen was applied to hydrogen transported in the form of high-pressure hydrogen gas or cryogenic liquid hydrogen and produced by natural gas coal and electrolysis of water. It was found that the cost of hydrogen from natural gas and coal is currently lower while it is greatly affected by the hydrogen purification cost and the carbon trading price. Considering the impact of future production technologies raw material costs and rising requirements for sustainable energy development on the hydrogen energy cost it is recommended to use renewable energy curtailment as a source of electricity and multi-stack system electrolyzers as large-scale electrolysis equipment in combination with cryogenic liquid hydrogen transportation or on-site hydrogen production. Furthermore participation in electricity market-oriented transactions cross-regional transactions and carbon trading can reduce the cost of hydrogen. These approaches represent the optimal method for obtaining inexpensive hydrogen.
Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Energy Management Strategy for Fuel Cell/Battery/Supercapacitor Powered Electric Vehicle
Sep 2022
Publication
Vehicles using a single fuel cell as a power source often have problems such as slow response and inability to recover braking energy. Therefore the current automobile market is mainly dominated by fuel cell hybrid vehicles. In this study the fuel cell hybrid commercial vehicle is taken as the research object and a fuel cell/ battery/supercapacitor energy topology is proposed and an energy management strategy based on a doubledelay deep deterministic policy gradient is designed for this topological structure. This strategy takes fuel cell hydrogen consumption fuel cell life loss and battery life loss as the optimization goals in which supercapacitors play the role of coordinating the power output of the fuel cell and the battery providing more optimization ranges for the optimization of fuel cells and batteries. Compared with the deep deterministic policy gradient strategy (DDPG) and the nonlinear programming algorithm strategy this strategy has reduced hydrogen consumption level fuel cell loss level and battery loss level which greatly improves the economy and service life of the power system. The proposed EMS is based on the TD3 algorithm in deep reinforcement learning and simultaneously optimizes a number of indicators which is beneficial to prolong the service life of the power system.
A Financial Model for Lithium-ion Storage in a Photovoltaic and Biogas Energy System
May 2019
Publication
Electrical energy storage (EES) such as lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries can reduce curtailment of renewables maximizing renewable utilization by storing surplus electricity. Several techno-economic analyses have been performed on EES but few have investigated the financial performance. This paper presents a state-of-the-art financial model obtaining novel and significative financial and economics results when applied to Li-ion EES. This work is a significant step forward since traditional analysis on EES are based on oversimplified and unrealistic economic models. A discounted cash flow model for the Li-ion EES is introduced and applied to examine the financial performance of three EES operating scenarios. Real-life solar irradiance load and retail electricity price data from Kenya are used to develop a set of case studies. The EES is coupled with photovoltaics and an anaerobic digestion biogas power plant. The results show the impact of capital cost: the Li-ion project is unprofitable in Kenya with a capital cost of 1500 $/kWh but is profitable at 200 $/kWh. The study shows that the EES will generate a higher profit if it is cycled more frequently (hence a higher lifetime electricity output) although the lifetime is reduced due to degradation.
A Review of Technical Advances, Barriers, and Solutions in the Power to Hydrogen Roadmap
Oct 2020
Publication
Power to hydrogen (P2H) provides a promising solution to the geographic mismatch between sources of renewable energy and the market due to its technological maturity flexibility and the availability of technical and economic data from a range of active demonstration projects. In this review we aim to provide an overview of the status of P2H analyze its technical barriers and solutions and propose potential opportunities for future research and industrial demonstrations. We specifically focus on the transport of hydrogen via natural gas pipeline networks and end-user purification. Strong evidence shows that an addition of about 10% hydrogen into natural gas pipelines has negligible effects on the pipelines and utilization appliances and may therefore extend the asset value of the pipelines after natural gas is depleted. To obtain pure hydrogen from hydrogen-enriched natural gas (HENG) mixtures end-user separation is inevitable and can be achieved through membranes adsorption and other promising separation technologies. However novel materials with high selectivity and capacity will be the key to the development of industrial processes and an integrated membrane-adsorption process may be considered in order to produce high-purity hydrogen from HENG. It is also worth investigating the feasibility of electrochemical separation (hydrogen pumping) at a large scale and its energy analysis. Cryogenics may only be feasible when liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the major products. A range of other technological and operational barriers and opportunities such as water availability byproduct (oxygen) utilization and environmental impacts are also discussed. This review will advance readers’ understanding of P2H and foster the development of the hydrogen economy.
Performance Evaluation of a Hydrogen-fired Combined Cycle with Water Recovery
Mar 2023
Publication
Hydrogen can alleviate the increasing environmental pollution and has good development prospects in power generation due to its high calorific value and low environmental impact. The previously designed hydrogen-fired combined cycle ignored water recycling which led to an inefficient application of hydrogen and the wastage of water. This paper proposes the concept of a hydrogen-fired combined cycle with water recovery to reuse the condensed water as an industrial heat supply. It was applied to an F-class combined cycle power plant. The results demonstrate that the efficiency of hydrogen-fired combined cycles with and without water recovery increased by 1.92% and 1.35% respectively compared to that of the natural-gas-fired combined cycle under full working conditions. In addition an economic comparison of the three cycles was conducted. The levelized cost of energy of the hydrogen-fired combined cycle with water recovery will be 52.22% lower than that of the natural-gas-fired combined cycle in 2050. This comparative study suggested that water recovery supplementation could improve the gas turbine efficiency. The proposed hydrogen-fired combined cycle with water recovery would provide both environmental and economic benefits.
Impacts of Low-Carbon Targets and Hydrogen Production Alternatives on Energy Supply System Transition: An Infrastructure-Based Optimization Approach and a Case Study of China
Jan 2021
Publication
Low-carbon transition pathways oriented from different transition targets would result in a huge variation of energy system deployment and transition costs. Hydrogen is widely considered as an imperative energy carrier to reach carbon neutral targets. However hydrogen production either from non-fossil power or fossil fuels with carbon capture is closely linked with an energy supply system and has great impacts on its structure. Identifying an economically affordable transition pathway is attractive and energy infrastructure is critical due to massive investment and long life-span. In this paper a multi-regional multi-period and infrastructure-based model is proposed to quantify energy supply system transition costs with different low-carbon targets and hydrogen production alternatives and China is taken as a case study. Results show that fulfilling 2-degree and 1.5-degree temperature increase targets would result in 84% and 151% increases in system transition costs 114% and 246% increases in infrastructure investment and 211% and 339% increases in stranded investment compared to fulfilling stated policy targets. Producing hydrogen from coal would be economical when carbon capture and sequestration cost is lower than 437 yuan per tonne and reduce infrastructure investment and stranded coal investment by 16% and 35% respectively than producing hydrogen from renewable power.
The State-of-the-Art Progress on the Forms and Modes of Hydrogen and Ammonia Energy Utilization in Road Transportation
Sep 2022
Publication
The crisscross progress of transportation and energy carries the migrating track of human society development and the evolution of civilization among which the decarbonization strategy is a key issue. Traffic carbon emissions account for 16.2% of total energy carbon emissions while road traffic carbon emissions account for 11.8% of total energy carbon emissions. Therefore road traffic is a vital battlefield in attaining the goal of decarbonization. Employing clean energy as an alternative fuel is of great significance to the transformation of the energy consumption structure in road transportation. Hydrogen and ammonia are renewable energy with the characteristics of being widely distributed and clean. Both exist naturally in nature and the products of complete combustion are substances (water and nitrogen) that do not pollute the atmosphere. Because it can promote agricultural production ammonia has a long history in human society. Both have the potential to replace traditional fossil fuel energy. An overview of the advantages of hydrogen and ammonia as well as their development in different countries such as the United States the European Union Japan and other major development regions is presented in this paper. Related research topics of hydrogen and ammonia’s production storage and transferring technology have also been analyzed and collated to stimulate the energy production chain for road transportation. The current cost of green hydrogen is between $2.70–$8.80 globally which is expected to approach $2–$6 by 2030. Furthermore the technical development of hydrogen and ammonia as a fuel for engines and fuel cells in road transportation is compared in detail and the tests practical applications and commercial popularization of these technologies are summarized respectively. Opportunities and challenges coexist in the era of the renewable energy. Based on the characteristics and development track of hydrogen and ammonia the joint development of these two types of energy is meant to be imperative. The collaborative development mode of hydrogen and ammonia together with the obstacles to their development of them are both compared and discussed. Finally referring to the efforts and experiences of different countries in promoting hydrogen and ammonia in road transportation corresponding constructive suggestions have been put forward for reference. At the end of the paper a framework diagram of hydrogen and ammonia industry chains is provided and the mutual promotion development relationship of the two energy sources is systematically summarized.
From Renewable Energy to Sustainable Protein Sources: Advancement, Challenges, and Future Roadmaps
Jan 2022
Publication
The concerns over food security and protein scarcity driven by population increase and higher standards of living have pushed scientists toward finding new protein sources. A considerable proportion of resources and agricultural lands are currently dedicated to proteinaceous feed production to raise livestock and poultry for human consumption. The 1st generation of microbial protein (MP) came into the market as land-independent proteinaceous feed for livestock and aquaculture. However MP may be a less sustainable alternative to conventional feeds such as soybean meal and fishmeal because this technology currently requires natural gas and synthetic chemicals. These challenges have directed researchers toward the production of 2nd generation MP by integrating renewable energies anaerobic digestion nutrient recovery biogas cleaning and upgrading carbon-capture technologies and fermentation. The fermentation of methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) and hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) i.e. two protein rich microorganisms has shown a great potential on the one hand to upcycle effluents from anaerobic digestion into protein rich biomass and on the other hand to be coupled to renewable energy systems under the concept of Power-to-X. This work compares various production routes for 2nd generation MP by reviewing the latest studies conducted in this context and introducing the state-of-the-art technologies hoping that the findings can accelerate and facilitate upscaling of MP production. The results show that 2nd generation MP depends on the expansion of renewable energies. In countries with high penetration of renewable electricity such as Nordic countries off-peak surplus electricity can be used within MP-industry by supplying electrolytic H2 which is the driving factor for both MOB and HOB-based MP production. However nutrient recovery technologies are the heart of the 2nd generation MP industry as they determine the process costs and quality of the final product. Although huge attempts have been made to date in this context some bottlenecks such as immature nutrient recovery technologies less efficient fermenters with insufficient gas-to-liquid transfer and costly electrolytic hydrogen production and storage have hindered the scale up of MP production. Furthermore further research into techno-economic feasibility and life cycle assessment (LCA) of coupled technologies is still needed to identify key points for improvement and thereby secure a sustainable production system.

Sep 2022
Publication
A combined ultra-short-term wind power prediction strategy with high robustness based on least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) has been proposed in order to solve the wind abandonment caused by wind power randomness and realize efficient hydrogen production under wide power fluctuation. Firstly the original wind power data is decomposed into sub-modes with different bandwidth by variational modal decomposition (VMD) which reduces the influence of random noise and mode mixing significantly. Then dragonfly algorithm (DA) is introduced to optimize LSSVM kernel function and the combined ultra-short-term wind power prediction strategy which meets the time resolution and accuracy requirements of electrolytic cell control has been established finally. This model is validated by a wind power hydrogen production demonstration project output in the middle east of China. The superior prediction accuracy for high volatility wind power data is verified and the algorithm provides theoretical basis to improve the control of wind power hydrogen production system

Publication
Facing the challenge that the single-motor electric drive powertrain cannot meet the continuous uphill requirements in the cold mountainous area of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics the manuscript adopted a dual-motor coupling technology. Then according to the operating characteristics and performance indicators of the fuel cell (FC)–traction battery hybrid power system the structure design and parameter matching of the vehicle power system architecture were carried out to improve the vehicle’s dynamic performance. Furthermore considering the extremely cold conditions in the Winter Olympics competition area and the poor low-temperature tolerance of core components of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) under extremely cold conditions such as the reduced capacity and service life of traction batteries caused by the rapid deterioration of charging and discharging characteristics the manuscript proposed a fuzzy logic control-based energy management strategy (EMS) optimization method for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) to reduce the power fluctuation hydrogen consumption and battery charging/discharging times and at the same time to ensure the hybrid power system meets the varying demand under different conditions. In addition the performance of the proposed approach was investigated and validated in an intercity coach in real-world driving conditions. The experimental results show that the proposed powertrain with an optimal control strategy successfully alleviated the fluctuation of vehicle power demand reduced the battery charging/discharging times of traction battery and improved the energy efficiency by 20.7%. The research results of this manuscript are of great significance for the future promotion and application of fuel cell electric coaches in all climate environments especially in an extremely cold mountain area.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production is considered as an ideal approach to solve global energy crisis and environmental pollution. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received extensive consideration due to its facile synthesis stable physicochemical properties and easy functionalization. However the pristine g-C3N4 usually shows unsatisfactory photocatalytic activity due to the limited separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Generally introducing semiconductors or co-catalysts to construct g–C3N4–based heterojunction photocatalysts is recognized as an effective method to solve this bottleneck. In this review the advantages and characteristics of various types of g–C3N4–based heterojunction are analyzed. Subsequently the recent progress of highly efficient g–C3N4–based heterojunction photocatalysts in the field of photocatalytic water splitting is emphatically introduced. Finally a vision of future perspectives and challenges of g–C3N4–based heterojunction photocatalysts in hydrogen production are presented. Predictably this timely review will provide valuable reference for the design of efficient heterojunctions towards photocatalytic water splitting and other photoredox reactions.
Numerical Simulation on Heating Effects during Hydrogen Absorption in Metal Hydride Systems for Hydrogen Storage
Apr 2022
Publication
A 2-D numerical simulation model was established based on a small-sized metal hydride storage tank and the model was validated by the existing experiments. An external cooling bath was equipped to simulate the heating effects of hydrogen absorption reactions. Furthermore both the type and the flow rate of the cooling fluids in the cooling bath were altered so that changes in temperature and hydrogen storage capacity in the hydrogen storage model could be analyzed. It is demonstrated that the reaction rate in the center of the hydrogen storage tank gradually becomes lower than that at the wall surface. When the flow rate of the fluid is small significant differences can be found in the cooling liquid temperature at the inlet and the outlet cooling bath. In areas adjacent to its inlet the reaction rate is higher than that at the outlet and a better cooling effect is produced by water. As the flow rate increases the total time consumed by hydrogen adsorption reaction is gradually reduced to a constant value. At the same flow rate the wall surface of the tank shows a reaction rate insignificantly different from that in its center provided that cooling water or oil coolant is replaced with air.
Numerical Investigation on NOx Emission of a Hydrogen-Fuelled Dual-Cylinder Free-Piston Engine
Jan 2023
Publication
The free-piston engine is a type of none-crank engine that could be operated under variable compression ratio and this provides it flexible fuel applicability and low engine emission potential. In this work several 1-D engine models including conventional gasoline engines free-piston gasoline engines and free-piston hydrogen engines have been established. Both engine performance and emission performance under engine speeds between 5–11 Hz and with different equivalent ratios have been simulated and compared. Results indicated that the free-piston engine has remarkable potential for NOx reduction and the largest reduction is 57.37% at 6 Hz compared with a conventional gasoline engine. However the figure of NOx from the hydrogen free-piston engine is slightly higher than that of the gasoline free-piston engine and the difference increases with the increase of engine speed. In addition several factors and their relationships related to hydrogen combustion in the free-piston engine have been investigated and results show that the equivalent ratio ϕ = 0.88 is a vital point that affects NOx production and the ignition advance timing could also affect combustion duration the highest in-cylinder temperature and NOx production to a large extent.
Cross-regional Electricity and Hydrogen Deployment Research Based on Coordinated Optimization: Towards Carbon Neutrality in China

In order to achieve carbon neutrality in a few decades the clean energy proportion in power mix of China will significantly rise to over 90%. A consensus has been reached recently that it will be of great significance to promote hydrogen energy that is produced by variable renewable energy power generation as a mainstay energy form in view of its potential value on achieving carbon neutrality. This is because hydrogen energy is capable of complementing the power system and realizing further electrification especially in the section that cannot be easily replaced by electric energy. Power system related planning model is commonly used for mid-term and long-term planning implemented through power installation and interconnection capacity expansion optimization. In consideration of the high importance of hydrogen and its close relationship with electricity an inclusive perspective which contains both kinds of the foresaid energy is required to deal with planning problems. In this study a joint model is established by coupling hydrogen energy model in the chronological operation power planning model to realize coordinated optimization on energy production transportation and storage. By taking the carbon neutrality scenario of China as an example the author applies this joint model to deploy a scheme research on power generation and hydrogen production inter-regional energy transportation capacity and hydrogen storage among various regions. Next by taking the technology progress and cost decrease prediction uncertainty into account the main technical– economic parameters are employed as variables to carry out sensitivity analysis research with a hope that the quantitative calculation and results discussion could provide suggestion and reference to energy-related companies policy-makers and institute researchers in formulating strategies on related energy development.

Low-voltage DC distribution system has many advantages such as facilitating the access of DC loads and distributed energies and improving the network’s stability. It has become a new idea for integrated hydrogen production stations. Power supply capacity and small-signal stability are important indexes to evaluate a low-voltage DC integrated system. Finally a practical example is analyzed by MATLAB/Simulink simulation to verify the accuracy of the theory. This study can provide an effective theoretical method for the structure optimization and integrated parameter design of low-voltage DC system
Fabrication of Highly Textured 2D SnSe Layers with Tunable Electronic Properties for Hydrogen Evolution
Jun 2021
Publication
Hydrogen is regarded to be one of the most promising renewable and clean energy sources. Finding a highly efficient and cost-effective catalyst to generate hydrogen via water splitting has become a research hotspot. Two-dimensional materials with exotic structural and electronic properties have been considered as economical alternatives. In this work 2D SnSe films with high quality of crystallinity were grown on a mica substrate via molecular beam epitaxy. The electronic property of the prepared SnSe thin films can be easily and accurately tuned in situ by three orders of magnitude through the controllable compensation of Sn atoms. The prepared film normally exhibited p-type conduction due to the deficiency of Sn in the film during its growth. First-principle calculations explained that Sn vacancies can introduce additional reactive sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and enhance the HER performance by accelerating electron migration and promoting continuous hydrogen generation which was mirrored by the reduced Gibbs free energy by a factor of 2.3 as compared with the pure SnSe film. The results pave the way for synthesized 2D SnSe thin films in the applications of hydrogen production.

The consumption of hydrogen could increase by sixfold in 2050 compared to 2020 levels reaching about 530 Mt. Against this backdrop the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been a major research area in the field of energy engineering. Several reviews have been provided in the existing corpus of literature on PEMFC but questions related to their evolutionary nuances and research hotspots remain largely unanswered. To fill this gap the current review uses bibliometric analysis to analyze PEMFC articles indexed in the Scopus database that were published between 2000–2021. It has been revealed that the research field is growing at an annual average growth rate of 19.35% with publications from 2016 to 2012 alone making up 46% of the total articles available since 2000. As the two most energy-consuming economies in the world the contributions made towards the progress of PEMFC research have largely been from China and the US. From the research trend found in this investigation it is clear that the focus of the researchers in the field has largely been to improve the performance and efficiency of PEMFC and its components which is evident from dominating keywords or phrases such as ‘oxygen reduction reaction’ ‘electrocatalysis’ ‘proton exchange membrane’ ‘gas diffusion layer’ ‘water management’ ‘polybenzimidazole’ ‘durability’ and ‘bipolar plate’. We anticipate that the provision of the research themes that have emerged in the PEMFC field in the last two decades from the scientific mapping technique will guide existing and prospective researchers in the field going forward.
Experimental Study on the Effects of Hydrogen Injection Strategy on the Combustion and Emissions of a Hydrogen/Gasoline Dual Fuel SI Engine under Lean Burn Condition
Oct 2022
Publication
Hydrogen addition can improve the performance and extend the lean burn limit of gasoline engines. Different hydrogen injection strategies lead to different types of hydrogen mixture distribution (HMD) which affects the engine performance. Therefore the present study experimentally investigated the effects of hydrogen injection strategy on the combustion and emissions of a hydrogen/gasoline dual-fuel port-injection engine under lean-burn conditions. Four different hydrogen injection strategies were explored: hydrogen direct injection (HDI) forming a stratified hydrogen mixture distribution (SHMD); hydrogen intake port injection forming a premixed hydrogen mixture distribution (PHMD); split hydrogen direct injection (SHDI) forming a partially premixed hydrogen mixture distribution (PPHMD); and no hydrogen addition (NHMD). The results showed that 20% hydrogen addition could extend the lean burn limit from 1.5 to 2.8. With the increase in the excess air ratio the optimum HMD changed from PPHMD to SHMD. The maximum brake thermal efficiency was obtained with an excess air ratio of 1.5 with PPHMD. The coefficient of variation (COV) with NHMD was higher than that with hydrogen addition since the hydrogen enhanced the stability of ignition and combustion. The engine presented the lowest emissions with PHMD. There were almost no carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions when the excess air ratio was respectively more than 1.4 and 2.0.
Experimental Study and Thermodynamic Analysis of Hydrogen Production through a Two-Step Chemical Regenerative Coal Gasification
Jul 2019
Publication
Hydrogen as a strategy clean fuel is receiving more and more attention recently in China in addition to the policy emphasis on H2. In this work we conceive of a hydrogen production process based on a chemical regenerative coal gasification. Instead of using a lumped coal gasification as is traditional in the H2 production process herein we used a two-step gasification process that included coking and char-steam gasification. The sensible heat of syngas accounted for 15–20% of the total energy of coal and was recovered and converted into chemical energy of syngas through thermochemical reactions. Moreover the air separation unit was eliminated due to the adoption of steam as oxidant. As a result the efficiency of coal to H2 was enhanced from 58.9% in traditional plant to 71.6% in the novel process. Further the energy consumption decreased from 183.8 MJ/kg in the traditional plant to 151.2 MJ/kg in the novel process. The components of syngas H2 and efficiency of gasification are herein investigated through experiments in fixed bed reactors. Thermodynamic performance is presented for both traditional and novel coal to hydrogen plants.

Using data from Inner Mongolia where wind abandonment and power limitation are severe and Beijing and Shanxi provinces where hydrogen demand is high this paper analyzes the benefits of the hydrogen storage system for coal–wind–solar power generation and explores the impact of national subsidy policies and technological advances on system economics.
Current Research Progress in Magnesium Borohydride for Hydrogen Storage (A review)
Nov 2021
Publication
Hydrogen storage in solid-state materials is believed to be a most promising hydrogen-storage technology for high efficiency low risk and low cost. Mg(BH4)2 is regarded as one of most potential materials in hydrogen storage areas in view of its high hydrogen capacities (14.9 wt% and 145–147 kg cm3 ). However the drawbacks of Mg(BH4)2 including high desorption temperatures (about 250 C–580 C) sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility make it difficult to be used for onboard hydrogen storage of fuel cell vehicles. A lot of researches on improving the dehydrogenation reaction thermodynamics and kinetics have been done mainly including: additives or catalysts doping nanoconfining Mg(BH4)2 in nanoporous hosts forming reactive hydrides systems multi-cation/anion composites or other derivatives of Mg(BH4)2. Some favorable results have been obtained. This review provides an overview of current research progress in magnesium borohydride including: synthesis methods crystal structures decomposition behaviors as well as emphasized performance improvements for hydrogen storage.
Safety Design and Engineering Solution of Fuel Cell Powered Ship in Inland Waterway of China
Oct 2021
Publication
From the perspective of risk control when hydrogen fuel and fuel cells are used on ships there is a possibility of low-flash fuel leakage leading to the risk of explosion. Since the fuel cell space (cabin for fuel cell installations) is an enclosed space any small amount of leakage must be handled properly. In ship design area classification is a method of analyzing and classifying the areas where explosive gas atmospheres may occur. If the fuel cell space is regarded as a hazardous area all the electrical devices inside it must be explosion-proof type which will make the ship’s design very difficult. This paper takes a Chinese fuel cell powered ship as an example to analyze its safety. Firstly the leakage rates of fuel cell modules valves and connectors are calculated. Secondly the IEC60079-10-1 algorithm is used to calculate the risk level of the fuel cell space. Finally the ship and fuel cells are optimized and redesigned and the risk level of the fuel cell space is recalculated and compared. The result shows that the optimized fuel space risk level could be reduced to the level of the non-hazardous zone.
Time‐Decoupling Layered Optimization for Energy and Transportation Systems under Dynamic Hydrogen Pricing
Jul 2022
Publication
The growing popularity of renewable energy and hydrogen‐powered vehicles (HVs) will facilitate the coordinated optimization of energy and transportation systems for economic and en‐ vironmental benefits. However little research attention has been paid to dynamic hydrogen pricing and its impact on the optimal performance of energy and transportation systems. To reduce the dependency on centralized controllers and protect information privacy a time‐decoupling layered optimization strategy is put forward to realize the low‐carbon and economic operation of energy and transportation systems under dynamic hydrogen pricing. First a dynamic hydrogen pricing mechanism was formulated on the basis of the share of renewable power in the energy supply and introduced into the optimization of distributed energy stations (DESs) which will promote hydro‐ gen production using renewable power and minimize the DES construction and operation cost. On the basis of the dynamic hydrogen price optimized by DESs and the traffic conditions on roads the raised user‐centric routing optimization method can select a minimum cost route for HVs to purchase fuels from a DES with low‐cost and/or low‐carbon hydrogen. Finally the effectiveness of the proposed optimization strategy was verified by simulations.
ZnO@ZIF-8 Core-Shell Structure Gas Sensors with Excellent Selectivity to H2

Publication
As the energy crisis becomes worse hydrogen as a clean energy source is more and more widely used in industrial production and people’s daily life. However there are hidden dangers in hydrogen storage and transportation because of its flammable and explosive features. Gas detection is the key to solving this problem. High quality sensors with more practical and commercial value must be able to accurately detect target gases in the environment. Emerging porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials can effectively improve the selectivity of sensors as a result of high surface area and coordinated pore structure. The application of MOFs for surface modification to improve the selectivity and sensitivity of metal oxides sensors to hydrogen has been widely investigated. However the influence of MOF modified film thickness on the selectivity of hydrogen sensors is seldom studied. Moreover the mechanism of the selectivity improvement of the sensors with MOF modified film is still unclear. In this paper we prepared nano-sized ZnO particles by a homogeneous precipitation method. ZnO nanoparticle (NP) gas sensors were prepared by screen printing technology. Then a dense ZIF-8 film was grown on the surface of the gas sensor by hydrothermal synthesis. The morphology the composition of the elements and the characters of the product were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) transmission electron microscope (TEM) scanning electron microscope (SEM) energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is found that the ZIF-8 film grown for 4 h cannot form a dense core-shell structure. The thickness of ZIF-8 reaches 130 nm at 20 h. Through the detection and analysis of hydrogen (1000 ppm) ethanol (100 ppm) and acetone (50 ppm) from 150 °C to 290 °C it is found that the response of the ZnO@ZIF-8 sensors to hydrogen has been significantly improved while the response to ethanol and acetone was decreased. By comparing the change of the response coefficient when the thickness of ZIF-8 is 130 nm the gas sensor has a significantly improved selectivity to hydrogen at 230 °C. The continuous increase of the thickness tends to inhibit selectivity. The mechanism of selectivity improvement of the sensors with different thickness of the ZIF-8 films is discussed.
Numerical Simulation on the Thermal Dynamic Behavior of Liquid Hydrogen in a Storage Tank for Trailers
Oct 2022
Publication
In the present study a numerical model was established to investigate the thermal dynamic behavior of liquid hydrogen in a 40-foot ISO tank. The volume of fluids (VOF) method was applied to capture the liquid surface and a phase change model was used to describe the evaporation phenomenon of hydrogen. The mesh independence analysis and the experimental validation have been made. Under different filling levels motion statuses and heat leakage conditions the variations in pressure and temperature of the tank were investigated. The pressure of 90% filling level case was reduced by 12.09% compared to the 50% case. Besides the pressure of the sloshing condition has increased twofold contrasted with the stationary one and thermal stratification disappeared. Additionally 16.67 minutes were taken for the ullage pressure to reach around 1MPa in emergencies of being extremely heated. Some valuable conclusions and suggestions for the transportation of liquid hydrogen arrived. Those could be the references to predict the release time of boil-off hydrogen and primarily support for gas-releasing control strategies.
Interchangeability of Hydrogen Injection in Zhejiang Natural Gas Pipelines as a Means to Achieve Carbon Neutrality
Sep 2022
Publication
The blending of hydrogen gas into natural gas pipelines is an effective way of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. Due to the large differences in the calorific values of natural gas from different sources the calorific value of natural gas after mixing with hydrogen may not meet the quality requirements of natural gas and the quality of natural gas entering long-distance natural gas and urban gas pipelines also has different requirements. Therefore it is necessary to study the effect of multiple gas sources and different pipe network types on the differences in the calorific values of natural gas following hydrogen admixing. In this regard this study aimed to determine the quality requirements and proportions of hydrogen-mixed gas in natural gas pipelines at home and abroad and systematically determined the quality requirements for natural gas entering both long-distance natural gas and urban gas pipelines in combination with national standards. Taking the real calorific values of the gas supply cycle of seven atmospheric sources as an example the calorific and Wobbe Index values for different hydrogen admixture ratios in a one-year cycle were calculated. The results showed that under the requirement of natural gas interchangeability there were great differences in the proportions of natural gas mixed with hydrogen from different gas sources. When determining the proportion of hydrogen mixed with natural gas both the factors of different gas sources and the factors of the gas supply cycle should be considered.

Publication
This paper proposes a self-sustaining control model for proton-exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis devices aiming to maintain the temperature of their internal operating environment and thus improve the electrolysis efficiency and hydrogen production rate. Based on the analysis of energy–substance balance and electrochemical reaction characteristics an electrothermal-coupling dynamic model for PEM electrolysis devices was constructed. Considering the influence of the input energy–substance and the output hydrogen and oxygen of PEM electrolysis devices on the whole dynamic equilibrium process the required electrical energy and water molar flow rate are dynamically adjusted so that the temperature of the cathode and the anode is maintained near 338.15 K. The analytical results show that the hydrogen production rate and electrolysis efficiency are increased by 0.275 mol/min and 3.9% respectively by linearly stacking 100 PEM electrolysis devices to form a hydrogen production system with constant cathode and anode operating temperatures around 338.15 K in the self-sustaining controlled mode
Influence of Longitudinal Wind on Hydrogen Leakage and Hydrogen Concentration Sensor Layout of Fuel Cell Vehicles
Jul 2023
Publication
Hydrogen has the physical and chemical characteristics of being flammable explosive and prone to leakage and its safety is the main issue faced by the promotion of hydrogen as an energy source. The most common scene in vehicle application is the longitudinal wind generated by driving and the original position of hydrogen concentration sensors (HCSs) did not consider the influence of longitudinal wind on the hydrogen leakage trajectory. In this paper the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software STAR CCM 2021.1 is used to simulate the hydrogen leakage and diffusion trajectories of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) at five different leakage locations the longitudinal wind speeds of 0 km/h 37.18 km/h and 114 km/h and it is concluded that longitudinal wind prolongs the diffusion time of hydrogen to the headspace and reduces the coverage area of hydrogen in the headspace with a decrease of 81.35%. In order to achieve a good detection effect of fuel cell vehicles within the longitudinal wind scene based on the simulated hydrogen concentration–time matrix the scene clustering method based on vector similarity evaluation was used to reduce the leakage scene set by 33%. Then the layout position of HCSs was optimized according to the proposed multi-scene full coverage response time minimization model and the response time was reduced from 5 s to 1 s.
A Prompt Decarbonization Pathway for Shipping: Green Hydrogen, Ammonia, and Methanol Production and Utilization in Marine Engines
Mar 2023
Publication
The shipping industry has reached a higher level of maturity in terms of its knowledge and awareness of decarbonization challenges. Carbon-free or carbon-neutralized green fuel such as green hydrogen green ammonia and green methanol are being widely discussed. However little attention has paid to the green fuel pathway from renewable energy to shipping. This paper therefore provides a review of the production methods for green power (green hydrogen green ammonia and green methanol) and analyzes the potential of green fuel for application to shipping. The review shows that the potential production methods for green hydrogen green ammonia and green methanol for the shipping industry are (1) hydrogen production from seawater electrolysis using green power; (2) ammonia production from green hydrogen + Haber–Bosch process; and (3) methanol production from CO2 using green power. While the future of green fuel is bright in the short term the costs are expected to be higher than conventional fuel. Our recommendations are therefore as follows: improve green power production technology to reduce the production cost; develop electrochemical fuel production technology to increase the efficiency of green fuel production; and explore new technology. Strengthening the research and development of renewable energy and green fuel production technology and expanding fuel production capacity to ensure an adequate supply of low- and zero-emission marine fuel are important factors to achieve carbon reduction in shipping.
Optimal Capacity Planning of Power to Hydrogen in Integrated Electricity–Hydrogen–Gas Energy Systems Considering Flexibility and Hydrogen Injection
Apr 2022
Publication
With increasing penetration of renewable energy it is important to source adequate system flexibility to maintain security of supply and minimize renewable generation curtailment. Power to hydrogen (P2H) plays an important role in the low-carbon renewable dominated energy systems. By blending green hydrogen produced from renewable power into the natural gas pipelines it is possible to help integrate large-scale intermittent generation and smooth the variability of renewable power output through the interconnection of the natural gas network hydrogen energy network and electric network. A two-stage stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear planning framework for P2H sizing and siting is proposed in this paper considering system flexibility requirements. The problem is then reduced to a mixed-integer second-order cone (MISOC) model through convex transformation techniques in order to reduce the computation burden. Then a distributed algorithm based on Bender’s decomposition is applied to obtain the optimal solution. A modified hybrid IEEE 33-node and Gas 20-node system is then used for simulation tests. The results showed that investment of P2H can significantly reduce the total capital and operational costs with lower renewable generation curtailment and electricity demand shedding. Numerical tests demonstrated to demonstrate the validity of the proposed MISOC model.
Risk Analysis of Fire and Explosion of Hydrogen-Gasoline Hybrid Refueling Station Based on Accident Risk Assessment Method for Industrial System
Apr 2023
Publication
Hydrogen–gasoline hybrid refueling stations can minimize construction and management costs and save land resources and are gradually becoming one of the primary modes for hydrogen refueling stations. However catastrophic consequences may be caused as both hydrogen and gasoline are flammable and explosive. It is crucial to perform an effective risk assessment to prevent fire and explosion accidents at hybrid refueling stations. This study conducted a risk assessment of the refueling area of a hydrogen–gasoline hybrid refueling station based on the improved Accident Risk Assessment Method for Industrial Systems (ARAMIS). An improved probabilistic failure model was used to make ARAMIS more applicable to hydrogen infrastructure. Additionally the accident consequences i.e. jet fires and explosions were simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods replacing the traditional empirical model. The results showed that the risk levels at the station house and the road near the refueling area were 5.80 × 10−5 and 3.37 × 10−4 respectively and both were within the acceptable range. Furthermore the hydrogen dispenser leaked and caused a jet fire and the flame ignited the exposed gasoline causing a secondary accident considered the most hazardous accident scenario. A case study was conducted to demonstrate the practicability of the methodology. This method is believed to provide trustworthy decisions for establishing safe distances from dispensers and optimizing the arrangement of the refueling area.
Hydrogen-Enriched Compressed Natural Gas Network Simulation for Consuming Green Hydrogen Considering the Hydrogen Diffusion Process
Sep 2022
Publication
Transporting green hydrogen by existing natural gas networks has become a practical means to accommodate curtailed wind and solar power. Restricted by pipe materials and pressure levels there is an upper limit on the hydrogen blending ratio of hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) that can be transported by natural gas pipelines which affects whether the natural gas network can supply energy safely and reliably. To this end this paper investigates the effects of the intermittent and fluctuating green hydrogen produced by different types of renewable energy on the dynamic distribution of hydrogen concentration after it is blended into natural gas pipelines. Based on the isothermal steady-state simulation results of the natural gas network two convection–diffusion models for the dynamic simulation of hydrogen injections are proposed. Finally the dynamic changes of hydrogen concentration in the pipelines under scenarios of multiple green hydrogen types and multiple injection nodes are simulated on a seven-node natural gas network. The simulation results indicate that compared with the solar-power-dominated hydrogen productionblending scenario the hydrogen concentrations in the natural gas pipelines are more uniformly distributed in the wind-power-dominated scenario and the solar–wind power balance scenario. To be specific in the solar-power-dominated scenario the hydrogen concentration exceeds the limit for more time whilst the overall hydrogen production is low and the local hydrogen concentration in the natural gas network exceeds the limit for nearly 50% of the time in a day. By comparison in the wind-power-dominated scenario all pipelines can work under safe conditions. The hydrogen concentration overrun time in the solar–wind power balance scenario is also improved compared with the solar-power-dominated scenario and the limit-exceeding time of the hydrogen concentration in Pipe 5 and Pipe 6 is reduced to 91.24% and 91.99% of the solar-power-dominated scenario. This work can help verify the day-ahead scheduling strategy of the electricity-HCNG integrated energy system (IES) and provide a reference for the design of local hydrogen production-blending systems.

Solar-to-hydrogen plants are predominantly based on steam electrolysis. Steam electrolysis requires water electricity and heat. The excess electric energy is generally converted into hydrogen via an electrolyser. The use of waste heat in hydrogen generation process promises energy efficiency improvement and production fluctuation reductions. This work investigates the techno-economic performance of the proposed system which recovers the waste heat from molten carbonate fuel cell and uses solar energy to produce steam. Comparison of thermally assisted solar system with corresponding solar system is done. The fuel cell provides 80% of the required thermal energy. The solar PV array provides the required electricity. The thermally assisted solar-to-hydrogen system annual energy efficiency (38.5 %) is higher than that of solar- to- hydrogen system. The investment cost of the proposed system is 2.4 % higher than that using only solar parabolic trough collector for the same required amount of heat. The advantage is that the fuel cell simultaneously produces electricity and heat. The recovery of waste heat allows getting an annual overall efficiency of 63.2 % for the molten carbonate fuel cell. It yields 2152 MWh of electricity per year. The 1 MW electrolysers annually generates 74 tonnes of hydrogen.

Renewable energies such as the wind energy and solar energy generate low-carbon electricity which can directly charge battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Meanwhile the surplus electricity can be used to produce the “green hydrogen” which provides zero-emission hydrogen fuels to those fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In order to charge/refuel multi-energy vehicles we propose a novel scheme of hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply using cryogenic and superconducting technologies. In this scheme the green hydrogen is further liquefied into the high-density and low-pressure liquid hydrogen (LH2) for bulk energy storage and transmission. Taking the advantage of the cryogenic environment of LH2 (20 K) it can also be used as the cryogen to cool down super conducting cables to realize the virtually zero-loss power transmission from 100 % renewable sources to vehicle charging stations. This hybrid LH2/electricity energy pipeline can realize long-distance large-capacity and high efficiency clean energy transmission to fulfil the hybrid energy supply demand for BEVs and FCEVs. For the case of a 100 MW-class hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply station the system principle and energy management strategy are analyzed through 9 different operating sub-modes. The corresponding static and dynamic economic modeling are performed and the economic feasibility of the hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply is verified using life-cycle analysis. Taking an example of wind power capacity 1898 MWh and solar power capacity 1619 MWh per day the dynamic payback period is 15.06 years the profitability index is 1.17 the internal rate of return is 7.956 % and the accumulative NPV is 187.92 M$. The system design and techno-economic analysis can potentially offer a technically/economically superior solution for future multi-energy vehicle charging/refueling systems.

The natural gas (NG) reforming is currently one of the low-cost methods for hydrogen production. However the mixture of H2 and CO2 in the produced gas inevitably includes CO2 and necessitates the costly CO2 separation. In this work a novel double chemical looping involving both combustion (CLC) and sorption-enhanced reforming (SE-CLR) was proposed towards the co-production of H2 and CO (CLC-SECLRHC) in two separated streams. CLC provides reactant CO2 and energy to feed SECLRHC which generates hydrogen in a higher purity as well as the calcium cycle to generate CO in a higher purity. Techno-economic assessment of the proposed system was conducted to evaluate its efficiency and economic competitiveness. Studies revealed that the optimal molar ratios of oxygen carrier (OC)/NG and steam/NG for reforming were recommended to be 1.7 and 1.0 respectively. The heat integration within CLC and SECLRHC units can be achieved by circulating hot OCs. The desired temperatures of fuel reactor (FR) and reforming reactor (RR) should be 850 °C and 600 °C respectively. The heat coupling between CLC and SECLRHC units can be realized via a jacket-type reactor and the NG split ratio for reforming and combustion was 0.53:0.47. Under the optimal conditions the H2 purity the H2 yield and the CH4 conversion efficiency were 98.76% 2.31 mol mol-1 and 97.96% respectively. The carbon and hydrogen utilization efficiency respectively were 58.60% and 72.45% in terms of the total hydrogen in both steam and NG. The exergy efficiency of the overall process reached 70.28%. In terms of the conventional plant capacity (75×103 t y-1 ) and current raw materials price (2500 $ t-1 ) the payback period can be 6.2 years and the IRR would be 11.5 demonstrating an economically feasible and risk resistant capability.
A Review of Ni Based Powder Catalyst for Urea Oxidation in Assisting Water Splitting Reaction
Jan 2022
Publication
Water splitting has been regarded as a sustainable and environmentally-friendly technique to realize green hydrogen generation while more energy is consumed due to the high overpotentials required for the anode oxygen evolution reaction. Urea electrooxidation an ideal substitute is thus received increasing attention in assisting water-splitting reactions. Note that highly efficient catalysts are still required to drive urea oxidation and the facile generation of high valence state species is significant in the reaction based on the electrochemical-chemical mechanisms. The high cost and rareness make the noble metal catalysts impossible for further consideration in large-scale application. Ni-based catalysts are very promising due to their cheap price facile structure tuning good compatibility and easy active phase formation. In the light of the significant advances made recently herein we reviewed the recent advances of Ni-based powder catalysts for urea oxidation in assisting water-splitting reaction. The fundamental of urea oxidation is firstly presented to clarify the mechanism of urea-assisted water splitting and then the prevailing evaluation indicators are briefly expressed based on the electrochemical measurements. The catalyst design principle including synergistic effect electronic effect defect construction and surface reconstruction as well as the main fabrication approaches are presented and the advances of various Ni-based powder catalysts for urea assisted water splitting are summarized and discussed. The problems and challenges are also concluded for the Ni-based powder catalysts fabrication the performance evaluation and their application. Considering the key influence factors for catalytic process and their application attention should be given to structure-property relationship deciphering novel Ni-based powder catalysts development and their construction in the real device; specifically the effort should be directed to the Ni-based powder catalyst with multi-functions to simultaneously promote the fundamental steps and high anti-corrosion ability by revealing the local structure reconstruction as well as the integration in the practical application. We believe the current summarization will be instructive and helpful for the Ni-based powder catalysts development and understanding their catalytic action for urea-assisted hydrogen generation via water splitting technique.
Numerical Study on Thermodynamic Coupling Characteristics of Fluid Sloshing in a Liquid Hydrogen Tank for Heavy-Duty Trucks
Feb 2023
Publication
The large-amplitude sloshing behavior of liquid hydrogen in a tank for heavy-duty trucks may have adverse effects on the safety and stability of driving. With successful application of liquid hydrogen in the field of new energy vehicles the coupled thermodynamic performance during liquid hydrogen large-amplitude sloshing becomes more attractive. In this paper a three-dimensional numerical model is established to simulate the thermodynamic coupling characteristics during liquid hydrogen sloshing in a horizontal tank for heavy-duty trucks. The calculation results obtained by the developed model are in good agreement with experimental data for liquid hydrogen. Based on the established 3D model the large-amplitude sloshing behavior of liquid hydrogen under extreme acceleration as well as the effects of acceleration magnitude and duration on liquid hydrogen sloshing is numerically determined. The simulation results show that under the influence of liquid hydrogen large-amplitude sloshing the convective heat transfer of fluid in the tank is greatly strengthened resulting in a decrease in the vapor temperature and an increase in the liquid temperature. In particular the vapor condensation caused by the sloshing promotes a rapid reduction of pressure in the tank. When the acceleration magnitude is 5 g with a duration of 200 ms the maximum reduction of ullage pressure is 1550 Pa and the maximum growth of the force on the right wall is 3.89 kN. Moreover the acceleration magnitude and duration have a remarkable influence on liquid hydrogen sloshing. With the increase in acceleration magnitude or duration there is a larger sloshing amplitude for the liquid hydrogen. When the duration of acceleration is 200 ms compared with the situation at the acceleration magnitude of 5 g the maximum reductions of ullage pressure decrease by 9.46% and 55.02% and the maximum growth of forces on the right wall decrease by 80.57% and 99.53% respectively at 2 g and 0.5 g. Additionally when the acceleration magnitude is 5 g in contrast with the situation at a duration of acceleration of 200 ms the maximum-ullage-pressure drops decrease by 8.17% and 21.62% and the maximum increase in forces on the right wall decrease by 71.80% and 88.63% at 100 ms and 50 ms respectively. These results can provide a reference to the safety design of horizontal liquid hydrogen tanks for heavy-duty trucks.

Jan 2023
Publication
With the development of fuel cells multi-stack fuel cell system (MFCS) for high power application has shown tremendous development potential owing to their obvious advantages including high efficiency durability reliability and pollution-free. Accordingly the state-of-the-art of MFCS is summarized and analyzed to advance its research. Firstly the MFCS applications are presented in high-power scenarios especially in transportation applications. Then to further investigate the MFCS MFCS including hydrogen and air subsystem thermal and water subsystem multi-stack architecture and prognostics and health monitoring are reviewed. It is noted that prognostics and health monitoring are investigated rarely in MFCS compared with previous research. In addition the efficiency and durability of MFCS are not only related to the application field and design principle but also the energy management strategy (EMS). The reason is that the EMS is crucial for lifespan cost and efficiency in the multi-stack fuel cell system. Finally the challenge and development potential of MFCS is proposed to provide insights and guidelines for future research.
Impacts of Wind Conditions on Hydrogen Leakage During Refilling Hydrogen-powered Vehicles
Mar 2023
Publication
Although hydrogen leakage at hydrogen refueling stations has been a concern less effort has been devoted to hydrogen leakage during the refueling of hydrogen-powered vehicles. In this study hydrogen leakage and dilution from the hydrogen dispenser during the refueling of hydrogen-powered vehicles were numerically investigated under different wind configurations. The shape size and distribution of flammable gas clouds (FGC) during the leakage and dilution processes were analyzed. The results showed that the presence of hydrogen-powered vehicles resulted in irregular FGC shapes. Greater wind speeds (vwv) were associated with longer FGC propagation distances. At vwv =2 m/s and 10 m/s the FGC lengths at the end of the leakage were 7.9 m and 20.4 m respectively. Under downwind conditions higher wind speeds corresponded to lower FGC heights. The FGC height was larger under upwind conditions and was slightly affected by the magnitude of the wind speed. In the dilution process the existence of a region with a high hydrogen concentration led to the FGC volume first increasing and then gradually decreasing. Wind promoted the mixing of hydrogen and air accelerated FGC dilution inhibited hydrogen uplifting and augmented the horizontal movement of the FGC. At higher wind speeds the low-altitude FGC movements could induce potential safety hazards.
Research on the Sealing Mechanism of Split-Liner High-Pressure Hydrogen Storage Cylinders
Mar 2024
Publication
Hydrogen storage is a crucial factor that limits the development of hydrogen energy. This paper proposes using a split liner for the inner structure of a hydrogen storage cylinder. A self-tightening seal is employed to address the sealing problem between the head and the barrel. The feasibility of this structure is demonstrated through hydraulic pressure experiments. The influence laws of the O-ring compression rate the distance from the straight edge section of the head to the sealing groove and the thickness of the head on the sealing performance of gas cylinders in this sealing structure are revealed using finite elements analysis. The results show that when the gas cylinder is subjected to medium internal pressure the maximum contact stress on the O-ring extrusion deformation sealing surface is greater than the medium pressure. There is sufficient contact width that is the arc length of the part where the stress on the O-ring contact surface is greater than the medium pressure so that it can form a good sealing condition. At the same time increasing the compression ratio of the O-ring and the head’s thickness will help improve the sealing performance and reducing the distance from the straight edge section of the head to the sealing groove will also improve the sealing performance.
Modeling of Unintended Hydrogen Releases from a Fuel Cell Tram

Publication
Hydrogen is a promising alternative energy carrier that has been increasingly used in industry especially the transportation sector to fuel vehicles through fuel cells. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles usually have high pressure on-board storage tanks which take up large spaces to provide comparable ranges as current fossil fuel vehicles because of the low volumetric energy density of hydrogen. Therefore hydrogen is also appropriate for large heavy-duty vehicles that have more space than passenger vehicles.
Green Synthesis of Olefin-linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Applications
Mar 2021
Publication
Green synthesis of crystalline porous materials for energy-related applications is of great significance but very challenging. Here we create a green strategy to fabricate a highly crystalline olefin-linked pyrazine-based covalent organic framework (COF) with high robustness and porosity under solvent-free conditions. The abundant nitrogen sites high hydrophilicity and well-defined one-dimensional nanochannels make the resulting COF an ideal platform to confine and stabilize the H3PO4 network in the pores through hydrogen-bonding interactions. The resulting material exhibits low activation energy (Ea) of 0.06 eV and ultrahigh proton conductivity across a wide relative humidity (10–90 %) and temperature range (25–80 °C). A realistic proton exchange membrane fuel cell using the olefin-linked COF as the solid electrolyte achieve a maximum power of 135 mW cm−2 and a current density of 676 mA cm−2 which exceeds all reported COF materials.
Electric Field Effects on Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: Perspectives and Outlook
Feb 2022
Publication
The grand challenges in renewable energy lie in our ability to comprehend efficient energy conversion systems together with dealing with the problem of intermittency via scalable energy storage systems. Relatively little progress has been made on this at grid scale and two overriding challenges still need to be addressed: (i) limiting damage to the environment and (ii) the question of environmentally friendly energy conversion. The present review focuses on a novel route for producing hydrogen the ultimate clean fuel from the Sun and renewable energy source. Hydrogen can be produced by light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting but it is very inefficient; rather we focus here on how electric fields can be applied to metal oxide/water systems in tailoring the interplay with their intrinsic electric fields and in how this can alter and boost PEC activity drawing both on experiment and non-equilibrium molecular simulation.

Publication
The electrolysis of water for sustainable hydrogen producing is a crucial segment of various emerging clean-energy technologies. However pursuing an efficient and cheap alternative catalyst to substitute state-of-the-art platinum-group electrocatalysts remains a prerequisite for the commercialization of this technology. Typically precious-metal-free catalysts have always much lower activities towards hydrogen production than that of Pt-group catalysts. To explore high-performance catalysts maximally exposed active sites rapid charge transfer ability and desirable electronic configuration are essentially demanded. Herein the fundamentals of hydrogen evolution reaction will be briefly described and the main focus will be on the interfacial engineering strategies by means of constructing defect structure creating heterojunction phase engineering lattice strain control designing hierarchical architecture and doping heteroatoms to effectively proliferate the catalytic active sites facilitate the electron diffusion and regulate the electronic configuration of numerous transition metals and their nitrides carbides sulfides phosphides as well as oxides achieving a benchmark performance of platinum-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. This review unambiguously offers proof that the conventional cheap and earth-abundant transition metal-based substances can be translated into an active water splitting catalyst by the rational and controllable interfacial designing.
Hydrogenation Production via Chemical Looping Reforming of Coke Oven Gas
Jun 2020
Publication
Coke oven gas (COG) is one of the most important by-products in the steel industry and the conversion of COG to value-added products has attracted much attention from both economic and environmental views. In this work we apply the chemical looping reforming technology to produce pure H2 from COG. A series of La1-xSrxFeO3 (x = 0 0.2 0.3 0.4 0.5 0.6) perovskite oxides were prepared as oxygen carriers for this purpose. The reduction behaviours of La1-xSrxFeO3 perovskite by different reducing gases (H2 CO CH4 and the mixed gases) are investigated to discuss the competition effect of different components in COG for reacting with the oxygen carriers. The results show that reduction temperatures of H2 and CO are much lower than that of CH4 and high temperatures (>800 °C) are requested for selective oxidation of methane to syngas. The co-existence of CO and H2 shows weak effect on the equilibrium of methane conversion at high temperatures but the oxidation of methane to syngas can inhibit the consumption of CO and H2. The doping of suitable amounts of Sr in LaFeO3 perovskite (e.g. La0.5Sr0.5FeO3) significantly promotes the reactivity for selective oxidation of methane to syngas and inhibits the formation of carbon deposition obtaining both high methane conversion in the COG oxidation step and high hydrogen yield in the water splitting step. The La0.5Sr0.5FeO3 shows the highest methane conversion (67.82%) hydrogen yield (3.34 mmol·g-1) and hydrogen purity (99.85%). The hydrogen yield in water splitting step is treble as high as the hydrogen consumption in reduction step. These results reveal that chemical looping reforming of COG to produce pure H2 is feasible and an O2-assistant chemical looping reforming process can further improve the redox stability of oxygen carrier.

Nov 2019
Publication
Porous cotton stalk activated carbons (CSAC) were prepared by phosphoric acid activation of cotton stalks in a fluidized bed. The CSAC-supported Co–B and Co–Ce–B catalysts were prepared by the impregnation-chemical reduction method. The samples were characterized by the nitrogen adsorption XRD FTIR and TEM measurements. The effects of the sodium borohydride (NaBH4) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) concentrations reaction temperature and recyclability on the rate of NaBH4 hydrolysis over the CSAC-supported Co–Ce–B catalysts were systematically investigated. The results showed that the agglomeration of the Co–Ce–B nanoclusters on the CSAC support surface was significantly reduced with the introduction of cerium. The CSAC-supported Co–Ce–B catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity and the average hydrogen generation rate was 16.42 L min−1 g−1 Co at 25°C which is higher than the most reported cobalt-based catalysts. The catalytic hydrolysis of NaBH4 was zero order with respect to the NaBH4 concentration and the hydrogen generation rate decreased with the increase in the NaOH concentration. The activation energy of the hydrogen generation reaction on the prepared catalyst was estimated to be 48.22 kJ mol−1. A kinetic rate equation was also proposed.

Publication
In this paper a method of efficient hydrogen production using low‐power electrolysis based on pre‐magnetic polarization was proposed in order to improve the rate of hydrogen produc‐ tion by water electrolysis with reduced energy consumption molecular polarity and stress–strain characteristics of distilled water under the condition of a pre‐magnetic field. By constructing a mi‐ crophysical model of hydrogen proton energy‐level transition and a macroscopic mathematical model corresponding to magnetization vector‐polarization hydrogen proton concentration in the pre‐magnetic field the ionic conductivity electrolyte current density interelectrode voltage and hydrogen production efficiency under a varying magnetic field were qualitatively and quantita‐ tively analyzed. In addition an adjustable pre‐magnetic polarization hydrolyzing hydrogen pro‐ duction test platform was set up to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The repeated test results within a magnetic field strength range of 0–10000 GS showed that the conductivity of distilled water after pre‐magnetic polarization treatment increased by 2–3 times the electrolytic current density of the PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) increased with increasing magnetic field strength the voltage between the poles continuously decreased and the hydrogen production rate was significantly improved. When the magnetic field strength reached 10000 GS the rate of hydro‐ gen production by the electrolysis of distilled water increased by 15%–20% within a certain period of time.

It is now well established that electrochemical systems can optimally perform only within a narrow range of temperature. Exposure to temperatures outside this range adversely affects the performance and lifetime of these systems. As a result thermal management is an essential consideration during the design and operation of electrochemical equipment and can heavily influence the success of electrochemical energy technologies. Recently significant attempts have been placed on the maturity of cooling technologies for electrochemical devices. Nonetheless the existing reviews on the subject have been primarily focused on battery cooling. Conversely heat transfer in other electrochemical systems commonly used for energy conversion and storage has not been subjected to critical reviews. To address this issue the current study gives an overview of the progress and challenges on the thermal management of different electrochemical energy devices including fuel cells electrolysers and supercapacitors. The physicochemical mechanisms of heat generation in these electrochemical devices are discussed in-depth. Physics of the heat transfer techniques currently employed for temperature control are then exposed and some directions for future studies are provided.

An all-weather energy management scheme for island DC microgrid based on hydrogen energy storage is proposed. A dynamic model of a large-scale wind–solar hybrid hydrogen-generation power generation system was established using a quasi-proportional resonance (QPR). We used the distributed Nautilus vertical axis wind power generation system as the main output of the system and it used the photovoltaic and hydrogen energy storage systems as alternative energy sources. Based on meeting the load power requirements and controlling the bus voltage stability we can convert the excess energy of the microgrid to hydrogen energy. With a shortage of load power we can convert the stored hydrogen into electrical energy for the load. Based on the ANSYS FLUENT software platform the feasibility and superiority over large-scale distributed Nautilus vertical axis wind power generation systems are verified. Through the MATLAB/Simulink software platform the effectiveness of the energy management method is verified. The results show that the large-scale distributed Nautilus vertical axis wind power generation system runs well in the energy system produces stable torque produces energy better than other types of wind turbines and has less impact on the power grid. The energy management method can ensure the normal operation of the system 24 h a day under the premise of maintaining the stable operation of the electric hydrogen system without providing external energy.

A Review of Hydrogen Purification Technologies for Fuel Cell Vehicles
Mar 2021
Publication
Nowadays we face a series of global challenges including the growing depletion of fossil energy environmental pollution and global warming. The replacement of coal petroleum and natural gas by secondary energy resources is vital for sustainable development. Hydrogen (H2 ) energy is considered the ultimate energy in the 21st century because of its diverse sources cleanliness low carbon emission flexibility and high efficiency. H2 fuel cell vehicles are commonly the end-point application of H2 energy. Owing to their zero carbon emission they are gradually replacing traditional vehicles powered by fossil fuel. As the H2 fuel cell vehicle industry rapidly develops H2 fuel supply especially H2 quality attracts increasing attention. Compared with H2 for industrial use the H2 purity requirements for fuel cells are not high. Still the impurity content is strictly controlled since even a low amount of some impurities may irreversibly damage fuel cells’ performance and running life. This paper reviews different versions of current standards concerning H2 for fuel cell vehicles in China and abroad. Furthermore we analyze the causes and developing trends for the changes in these standards in detail. On the other hand according to characteristics of H2 for fuel cell vehicles standard H2 purification technologies such as pressure swing adsorption (PSA) membrane separation and metal hydride separation were analyzed and the latest research progress was reviewed.
Balancing Wind-power Fluctuation Via Onsite Storage Under Uncertainty Power-to-hydrogen-to-power Versus Lithium Battery
Oct 2019
Publication
Imbalance costs caused by forecasting errors are considerable for grid-connected wind farms. In order to reduce such costs two onsite storage technologies i.e. power-to-hydrogen-to-power and lithium battery are investigated considering 14 uncertain technological and economic parameters. Probability density distributions of wind forecasting errors and power level are first considered to quantify the imbalance and excess wind power. Then robust optimal sizing of the onsite storage is performed under uncertainty to maximize wind-farm profit (the net present value). Global sensitivity analysis is further carried out for parameters prioritization to highlight the key influential parameters. The results show that the profit of power-to-hydrogen-to-power case is sensitive to the hydrogen price wind forecasting accuracy and hydrogen storage price. When hydrogen price ranges in (2 6) €/kg installing only electrolyzer can earn profits over 100 k€/MWWP in 9% scenarios with capacity below 250 kW/MWWP under high hydrogen price (over 4 €/kg); while installing only fuel cell can achieve such high profits only in 1.3% scenarios with capacity below 180 kW/MWWP. Installing both electrolyzer and fuel cell (only suggested in 22% scenarios) results in profits below 160 k€/MWWP and particularly 20% scenarios allow for a profit below 50 k€/MWWP due to the contradictory effects of wind forecasting error hydrogen and electricity price. For lithium battery investment cost is the single highly influential factor which should be reduced to 760 €/kWh. The battery capacity is limited to 88 kW h/MWWP. For profits over 100 k€/MWWP (in 3% scenarios) the battery should be with an investment cost below 510 €/kWh and a depth of discharge over 63%. The power-to-hydrogen-to-power case is more advantageous in terms of profitability reliability and utilization factor (full-load operating hours) while lithium battery is more helpful to reduce the lost wind and has less environmental impact considering current hydrogen market.
Development of Analysis Program for Direct Containment Heating
Feb 2022
Publication
Direct containment heating (DCH) is one of the potential factors leading to early containment failure. DCH is closely related to safety analysis and containment performance evaluation of nuclear power plants. In this study a DCH prediction program was developed to analyze the DCH loads of containment vessel. The phenomenological model of debris dispersal metal oxidation reaction debris-atmospheric heat transfer and hydrogen jet burn was established. Code assessment was performed by comparing with several separate effect tests and integral effect tests. The comparison between the predicted results and experimental data shows that the program can predict the key parameters such as peak pressure temperature and hydrogen production in containment well and for most comparisons the relative errors can be maintained within 20%. Among them the prediction uncertainty of hydrogen production is slightly larger. The analysis shows that the main sources of the error are the difference of time scale and the oxidation of cavity debris.

As one kind of clean zero carbon and sustainable energy hydrogen energy has been regarded as the most potential secondary energy. Recently hydrogen refueling station gradually becomes one of important distribution infrastructures that provides hydrogen sources for transport vehicles and other distribution devices. However the highly combustible nature of hydrogen may bring great hazards to environment and human. The safety design of hydrogen usage has been brought to public too. This paper is mainly focused on the hydrogen leakage and dispersion process. A new solver for gaseous buoyancy dispersion process is developed based on OpenFOAM [1]. Thermodynamic and transport properties of gases are updated by library Mutation ++ [2]. For validation two tests of hydrogen dispersion in partially opened space and closed space are presented. Numerical simulation of hydrogen dispersion behavior in hydrogen refueling station is carried out in this paper as well. From the results three phases of injection dispersion and buoyancy can be seen clearly. The profile of hydrogen concentration is tend to be Gaussian in dispersion region. Subsonic H2 jet in stagnant environment is calculated for refueling station the relationship between H2 concentration decay and velocity along the jet trajectory is obtained.

Publication
In this work we present the experimental results obtained from hydrogen fuelled spark-ignited dual piston free-piston engine generator (FPEG) prototype operated in two-stroke and four-stroke mode. The FPEG testing was successfully conducted at 3.7 compression ratio engine speed between 5 Hz and 11 Hz and with different equivalence ratios. The FPEG technical details experimental set-up and operational control are explained in detail. Performance indicators show that both equivalence ratio and engine speed affect the engine operation characteristics. For every set of specified FPEG parameters appropriate range of equivalence ratio is recommended to prevent unwanted disturbance to electric generator operation. Both two-stroke and four-stroke cycle mode were tested and the results showed different combustion characteristics with the two thermodynamic cycles. Four-stroke cycle mode could operate with indicated thermal efficiency gain up to 13.2% compared with the two-stroke cycle.
Numerical Simulation of Hydrogen Leakage and Diffusion Process of Fuel Cell Vehicle
Oct 2021
Publication
Regarding the problem of hydrogen diffusion of the fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) when its hydrogen supply system leaks this research uses the FLUENT software to simulate numerical values in the process of hydrogen leakage diffusion in both open space and closed space. This paper analyzed the distribution range and concentration distribution characteristics of hydrogen in these two different spaces. Besides this paper also took a survey about the effects of leakage rate wind speed wind direction in open space and the role the air vents play on hydrogen safety in closed space which provides a reference for the hydrogen safety of HFCV. In conclusion the experiment result showed that: In open space hydrogen leakage rate has a great influence on its diffusion. When the leakage rate doubles the hydrogen leakage range will expand about 1.5 times simultaneously. The hydrogen diffusion range is the smallest when the wind blows at 90 degrees which is more conducive to hydrogen diffusion. However when the wind direction is against the direction of the leakage of hydrogen the range of hydrogen distribution is maximal. Under this condition the risk of hydrogen leakage is highest. In an enclosed space when the vent is set closest to the leakage position the volume fraction of hydrogen at each time is smaller than that at other positions so it is more beneficial to safety.
Internal Film Cooling with Discrete-Slot Injection Orifices in Hydrogen/Oxygen Engine Thrust Chambers
May 2022
Publication
In the present study a hydrogen and oxygen heat-sink engine thrust chamber and the corresponding injection faceplate with discrete slot orifices are devised to study the cooling performance near the faceplate region. Moreover a set of experiments and numerical simulations are conducted to evaluate the effects of various factors on combustion performance and film cooling efficiency. According to the obtained result the circumferential cooling efficiency has an M-shaped distribution in the near-injector region. Furthermore it has been discovered that when the film flow ratio increases so does the cooling efficiency. This is especially more pronounced in the range of 30–80 mm from the faceplate. The cooling efficiency is found to be proportional to the film flow rate ratio’s 0.4 power. Compared with the slot thickness the reduction in the slot width is more beneficial in improving the cooling efficiency and the advantage is more prominent for small film flow ratios. In addition when the amount of coolant is not enough the cooling effect of the discrete slot film orifice is better than that of the common cylindrical orifice. The present article demonstrates that setting the area ratio of the adjacent film orifices is an effective way to reduce the uneven circumferential distribution of the wall surface temperature.
