There is no inherent property of hydrogen that makes it unsuitable for metering at distribution or transmission pressures. Towns gas containing large percentages of hydrogen was used for many years in the UK and continues to be in use in Hong Kong and Singapore. Many manufacturers sell their ordinary mechanical gas meters as suitable for hydrogen in a laboratory or industrial situation; unfortunately lack of demand has meant that none of these meters seem to have certified under appropriate metering regulations for gaseous hydrogen (e.g. the Measuring Instruments Directive)<br/>Some of the more sophisticated modern inferential meters (e.g. thermal or ultrasonic) currently designed specifically for natural gas (or LPG if suitably calibrated) are likely to unsuitable for repurposing directly to hydrogen but none of the problems appear fundamental or insuperable. The largest potential hurdle probably surrounds the physical size of current meters. A hydrogen appliance will consume about 3.3 more hydrogen than natural gas (on a volumetric basis) and using traditional designs this would have been measured through a meter probably too large to fit within an existing meter box. Unless unsolved such an increase in size would add materially to any hydrogen re-purposing programme.<br/>The meter trade thus need to be challenged to come up with a hydrogen meter that is the same physical size as a natural gas meter on a power rating basis (i.e. in kW). Ultrasonic and thermal mass meters should be included in the necessary Research and Development programme.<br/>A meter test programme is suggested that will provide evidence to meter manufacturers that the metering of hydrogen is not inherently difficult and thus convince them to make the necessary investments and/or approach the GDNO’s for assistance with such a programme.
HyDeploy Report: Trial Management

The trial management philosophy of HyDeploy has been developed to enable the overall objectives of the project to be achieved; the safe demonstration of operating a Gas Distribution Network (GDN) on a blend of natural gas and hydrogen. This document provides an overview of the management and governance processes associated with the trial itself. The operational and safety related undertakings before during and after the trial are summarised within this report as well as the intrial experimental programme. The detailed operational procedures are covered in HyD-Rep09.<br/>The programme structure of HyDeploy consists of three phases: Phase 1: Enabling work for preparation of GS(M)R Exemption Phase 2: Construction and installation of process equipment and Phase 3: Safe injection of hydrogen – the trial.<br/>This report focuses on Phase 3 which has two parts; the Proving Trial and; the Trial. As Statutory Duty Holder Keele is accountable for operation of the network it owns over the course of the trial. Operation and maintenance of the network will be undertaken according to the provisions of the Exemption on the basis of agreed revised procedures (HyD-Rep09) by Keele and Cadent. A governance process is in place to manage the blending of hydrogen into the network. This isdescribed in Sections 2 and 3.<br/>Safety related undertakings will be actioned before during and after the trial to mitigate risks identified through the house-to-house testing (HyD-Rep06) procedural review (HyD-Rep09) and quantitative risk assessment (HyD-Rep02). This scope of the undertakings includes actions associated with the end appliances the network itself and the process equipment to be installed.<br/>The detail of these undertakings is given in Section 4.<br/>As part of the trial an experimental programme has been designed to provide further evidence relating to the interactions of a hydrogen blend on network materials and end appliances. Power from Fossil Fuels analyses the role of coal and gas power generation in the UK's future power generation mix. It is the first of three reports in Carbon Connect's 2013 research inquiry the Future Electricity Series which examines what role fossil fuels renewables and nuclear can play in providing secure sustainable and affordable electricity in the UK. The report finds that significantly decarbonising the power sector by 2030 will prove the most successful strategy on energy sustainability security and affordability grounds and that switching the UK’s reliance on coal to gas generation - while using fossil fuel power stations increasingly for backup purposes - will be the most viable method of achieving this. The independent report chaired by former energy minister Charles Hendry MP and Opposition Energy and Climate Change Spokesperson in the House of Lords Baroness Worthington was compiled between January and April 2013 and received contributions from over 30 experts in academia industry Parliament and Government and was launched in Parliament on the 22nd April 2013. UK Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard: Guidance on the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sustainability Criteria

The Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard sets a maximum threshold for the amount of greenhouse gas emissions allowed in the production process for hydrogen to be considered ‘low carbon hydrogen’. Global Trade of Hydrogen: What is the Best Way to Transfer Hydrogen Over Long Distances?

As a manufactured fuel hydrogen can be produced in a decentralized way in most countries around the world. This means even in a net zero economy the global trade of hydrogen could look quite different to the current international trade in fossil fuels including natural gas. With further declines in the costs of renewable electricity and electrolyzers regions which have lower cost renewable electricity may develop an economic advantage in the production of low-cost hydrogen but for hydrogen to become a globally traded commodity the cost of imports needs to be lower than the cost of domestic production. Unlike oil or natural gas transporting hydrogen over long distances is not an easy task. Hydrogen liquefaction is an extremely energy-intensive process while maintaining the low temperature required for long-distance transportation and storage purposes results in additional energy losses and accompanying costs. The upside is that hydrogen can be converted into multiple carriers that have a higher energy density and higher transport capacity and can potentially be cheaper to transport over long distances. Among the substances currently identified as potential hydrogen carriers suitable for marine shipping liquid ammonia the so-called ‘liquid organic hydrogen carriers’ in general (toluene-methylcyclohexane (MCH) in particular) and methanol have received the most attention in recent years. This paper compares the key techno-economic characteristics of these potential carriers with that of liquified hydrogen in order to develop a better understanding of the ways in which hydrogen could be transported overseas in an efficient manner. The paper also discusses other factors beyond techno-economic features that may affect the choice of optimum hydrogen carrier for long distance transport as well as the global trade of hydrogen.
Ammonia–methane Combustion in Tangential Swirl Burners for Gas Turbine Power Generation

Ammonia has been proposed as a potential energy storage medium in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. This paper details experimental results and numerical calculations obtained to progress towards optimisation of fuel injection and fluidic stabilisation in swirl burners with ammonia as the primary fuel. A generic tangential swirl burner has been employed to determine flame stability and emissions produced at different equivalence ratios using ammonia–methane blends. Experiments were performed under atmospheric and medium pressurised conditions using gas analysis and chemiluminescence to quantify emission concentrations and OH production zones respectively. Numerical calculations using GASEQ and CHEMKIN-PRO were performed to complement compare with and extend experimental findings hence improving understanding concerning the evolution of species when fuelling on ammonia blends. It is concluded that a fully premixed injection strategy is not appropriate for optimised ammonia combustion and that high flame instabilities can be produced at medium swirl numbers hence necessitating lower swirl and a different injection strategy for optimised power generation utilising ammonia fuel blends.
A Review on Recent Progress in the Integrated Green Hydrogen Production Processes

The thermochemical water‐splitting method is a promising technology for efficiently con verting renewable thermal energy sources into green hydrogen. This technique is primarily based on recirculating an active material capable of experiencing multiple reduction‐oxidation (redox) steps through an integrated cycle to convert water into separate streams of hydrogen and oxygen. The thermochemical cycles are divided into two main categories according to their operating temperatures namely low‐temperature cycles (<1100 °C) and high‐temperature cycles (<1100 °C). The copper chlorine cycle offers relatively higher efficiency and lower costs for hydrogen production among the low‐temperature processes. In contrast the zinc oxide and ferrite cycles show great potential for developing large‐scale high‐temperature cycles. Although several challenges such as energy storage capacity durability cost‐effectiveness etc. should be addressed before scaling up these technologies into commercial plants for hydrogen production. This review critically examines various aspects of the most promising thermochemical water‐splitting cycles with a particular focus on their capabilities to produce green hydrogen with high performance redox pairs stability and the technology maturity and readiness for commercial use.
Recent Progress in Ammonia Fuel Cells and their Potential Applications

Conventional technologies are largely powered by fossil fuel exploitation and have ultimately led to extensive environmental concerns. Hydrogen is an excellent carbon-free energy carrier but its storage and long-distance transportation remain big challenges. Ammonia however is a promising indirect hydrogen storage medium that has well-established storage and transportation links to make it an accessible fuel source. Moreover the notion of ‘green ammonia’ synthesised from renewable energy sources is an emerging topic that may open significant markets and provide a pathway to decarbonise a variety of applications reliant on fossil fuels. Herein a comparative study based on the chosen design working principles advantages and disadvantages of direct ammonia fuel cells is summarised. This work aims to review the most recent advances in ammonia fuel cells and demonstrates how close this technology type is to integration with future applications. At present several challenges such as material selection NOx formation CO2 tolerance limited power densities and long-term stability must still be overcome and are also addressed within the contents of this review

Electrolytic hydrogen production also known as electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity in an electrolysis cell. Electrolysis produces pure hydrogen which is ideal for low temperature fuel cells for example in electric vehicles. Commercial electrolysers are on the market and have been in use for many years. Further technology developments will enable new generation electrolysers to be commercially competitive when used at scale with fluctuating renewable energy sources.

Biological routes usually involve the conversion of biomass to hydrogen and other valuable end products using microbial processes. Methods such as anaerobic digestion are feasible now at a laboratory and small pilot scale. This technology may prove to have additional or greater impact and value as route for the production of high value chemicals within a biorefinery concept.

A number of experimental techniques have been reported the most developed of which is ‘solar to fuels’ - a suite of technologies that typically split water into hydrogen and oxygen using solar energy. The research is promising though views are divided on its ultimate utility. Competition for space will always limit the scale up of solar to fuels.
The briefing concludes that steam methane reforming and electrolysis are the most likely technologies to be deployed to produce low-carbon hydrogen at volume in the near to mid-term providing that the challenges of high levels of carbon capture (for steam methane reforming) and cost reduction and renewable energy sources (for electrolysis) can be overcome.

Siting and Co-location with Hydrogen: What are the Risks?

The demand for hydrogen has grown more than threefold since 1975 [1] and price is expected to significantly decrease by 2030 [2] concluding in an expected continual increase in demand. HyLaw defined by Hydrogen Europe lays out recommendations for hydrogen applications using identified Legal and Administrative Processes (LAPs) across 18 European countries. Regarding site location HyLaw refers to the land use plan. This defines the production and storage of hydrogen as an industrial activity and therefore regardless of the specific site methods of production or use the hydrogen site must be within a permitted industrial zone or under specific condition commercial areas [3]. Local authorities fire departments and other concerned parties may need to be consulted on site suitability for the project. Risktec explores a range of considerations for siting and layout of hydrogen developments including co-location with other assets for example with renewable energy sources hazardous facilities or public structures. Good practice tools and assessment techniques are presented to mitigate the risks associated with the production storage and use of hydrogen not just the surrounding site and environment but the operatives of the facility.
Decarbonising Heat in Buildings: Putting Consumers First

From an evaluation of the GB housing stock it is clear that a mosaic of low carbon heating technologies will be needed to reach net zero. While heat pumps are an important component of this mix our analysis shows that it is likely to be impractical to heat many GB homes with heat pumps only. A combination of lack of exterior space and/or the thermal properties of the building fabric mean that a heat pump is not capable of meeting the space heating requirement of 8 to 12m homes (or 37% to 54% of the 22.7m homes assessed in this report) or can do so only through the installation of highly disruptive and intrusive measures such as solid wall insulation. Hybrid heat pumps that are designed to optimise efficiency of the system do not have the same requirements of a heat pump and may be a suitable solution for some of these homes. This is likely to mean that decarbonised gas networks are therefore critical to delivery of net zero. 3 to 4m homes1 (or 14% to 18% of homes assessed in our analysis) could be made suitable for heat pump retrofit through energy efficiency measures such as cavity wall insulation. For 7 to 10m homes there are no limiting factors and they require minimal/no upgrade requirements to be made heat pump-ready. Nevertheless given firstly the levels of disruption to the floors and interiors of homes caused by the installation of heat pumps and secondly the cost and disruption associated with the requirement to significantly upgrade the electricity distribution networks to cope with large numbers of heat pumps operating at peak demand times - combined with the availability of a decarbonised gas network which requires a simple like-for-like boiler replacement - is likely to mean that many of these ‘swing’ properties will be better served through a gas based technology such as hydrogen (particularly when consumer choice is factored in) or a hybrid system. A recent trial run in winter 2018-19 by the Energy System Catapult revealed that all participants were reluctant to make expensive investments to improve the energy efficiency of their homes just to enhance the performance of their heat pump. They were more interested in less costly upgrades and tangible benefits such as lower bills or greater comfort. This means that renewable gases including hydrogen as heating fuels are a crucial component of the journey to net zero and the UK’s hydrogen ambitions should be reflective of this. The analysis presented in this paper focuses on the external fabric of the buildings further analysis should be undertaken to consider the internal system changes that would be required for heat pumps and hydrogen boilers for example BEIS Domestic Heat Distribution Systems: Gathering Report from February 2021 which considers the suitability of radiators for the low carbon transition.
The Upfront Cost of Decarbonising Your Home

The objective of this report is to analyse the upfront capital costs facing consumers when considering the installation of new low carbon heating technology solutions for their homes today including the cost of any associated home upgrades that will likely be required. The UK Government have recently published its Heat and Buildings Strategy which sets out plans to significantly cut carbon emissions from the existing housing stock and new homes. Whilst the Strategy points to a future role for a variety of technologies such as heat pumps hydrogen and heat networks the success of this Strategy will largely be determined by the ability to achieve installed cost reductions for heat pumps of at least 25-50% by 2025 with the view to achieving cost parity with a gas boiler by 2030. The purpose of this report is to launch a series which tracks the upfront costs of these respective technologies over time to establish whether the cost reduction targets mooted by government and heat pump stakeholders are being delivered and the implications this has on our ability to decarbonise the UK housing stock.
Establishing the State of the Art for the Definition of Safety Distances for Hydrogen Refuelling Stations

Hydrogen is widely considered a clean source of energy from the viewpoint of reduction in carbon dioxide emissions as a countermeasure against global warming and air pollution. Various efforts have been made to develop hydrogen as a viable energy carrier including the implementation of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs). A good network of hydrogen refuelling stations is essential for operating FCVs and several hydrogen refuelling stations have been constructed and are in operation worldwide [1]. However despite the potential benefits of hydrogen its flammability creates significant safety concerns. Furthermore even though the energy density of hydrogen is lower than that of gasoline and there is no carbon present which means the amount of radiant heat flux released during combustion is relatively small hydrogen must be handled at high pressure in order to make the cruising range of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV) equal to that of gasoline-powered vehicles. Therefore it is essential to properly evaluate these safety concerns and take reasonable and effective countermeasures. Approximately 50 accidents and incidents involving HRSs have been reported globally [2]. Sakamoto et al. [2] analysed accidents and incidents at HRSs in Japan and the USA to identify the safety issues. Most types of accidents and incidents are small leakages of hydrogen but some have led to serious consequences such as fire and explosion. Recently there was a serious incident in Norway at Kjørbo where a strong explosion was observed [3] – indeed this was within a short time of two other serious incidents in the USA and South Korea showing that the frequency of such incidents may be higher as deployments increase. Use of hydrogen forklifts (and the associated refuelling infrastructure) is another challenge to consider. Hydrogen refuelling stations are often installed in urban areas facing roads and are readily accessible to everyone. Therefore a key measure to approve the hydrogen refuelling stations is safety distances between the hydrogen infrastructure and the surrounding structures such as office buildings or residential dwellings. Whilst a lot of work has been carried out on safety distances (see e.g. [4-6) the accident scenario assumptions and safety distances varied widely in those studies. As a result no consensus has yet emerged on the safety distances to be used and efforts are still needed to bridge the gap between international standards and local regulations (see e.g. [7-8]). The paper analyses this issue and provides guidance on the way forward.
Blast Wave Generated by Delayed Ignition of Under-Expanded Hydrogen Free Jet at Ambient and Cryogenic Temperatures

An under-expanded hydrogen jet from high-pressure equipment or storage tank is a potential incident scenario. Experiments demonstrated that the delayed ignition of a highly turbulent under-expanded hydrogen jet generates a blast wave able to harm people and damage property. There is a need for engineering tools to predict the pressure effects during such incidents to define hazard distances. The similitude analysis is applied to build a correlation using available experimental data. The dimensionless blast wave overpressure generated by delayed ignition and the follow-up deflagration or detonation of hydrogen jets at an any location from the jet ∆Pexp/P0 is correlated to the original dimensionless parameter composed of the product of the dimensionless ratio of storage pressure to atmospheric pressure Ps/P0 and the ratio of the jet release nozzle diameter to the distance from the centre of location of the fast-burning near-stoichiometric mixture on the jet axis (30% of hydrogen in the air by volume) to the location of a target (personnel or property) d/Rw. The correlation is built using the analysis of 78 experiments regarding this phenomenon in the wide range of hydrogen storage pressure of 0.5–65.0 MPa and release diameter of 0.5–52.5 mm. The correlation is applicable to hydrogen free jets at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. It is found that the generated blast wave decays inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the fast-burning portion of the jet. The correlation is used to calculate the hazard distances by harm thresholds for five typical hydrogen applications. It is observed that in the case of a vehicle with onboard storage tank at pressure 70 MPa the “no-harm” distance for humans reduces from 10.5 m to 2.6 m when a thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) diameter decreases from 2 mm to a diameter of 0.5 mm.
Effect of Heat Transfer through the Release of Pipe on Simulations of Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet Fires and Hazard Distances

Jet flames originated by cryo-compressed ignited hydrogen releases can cause life-threatening conditions in their surroundings. Validated models are needed to accurately predict thermal hazards from a jet fire. Numerical simulations of cryogenic hydrogen flow in the release pipe are performed to assess the effect of heat transfer through the pipe walls on jet parameters. Notional nozzle exit diameter is calculated based on the simulated real nozzle parameters and used in CFD simulations as a boundary condition to model jet fires. The CFD model was previously validated against experiments with vertical cryogenic hydrogen jet fires with release pressures up to 0.5 MPa (abs) release diameter 1.25 mm and temperatures as low as 50 K. This study validates the CFD model in a wider domain of experimental release conditions - horizontal cryogenic jets at exhaust pipe temperature 80 K pressure up to 2 MPa abs and release diameters up to 4 mm. Simulation results are compared against experimentally measured parameters as hydrogen mass flow rate flame length and radiative heat flux at several locations from the jet fire. The CFD model reproduces well experiments with reasonable engineering accuracy. Jet fire hazard distances established using three different criteria - temperature thermal radiation and thermal dose - are compared and discussed based on CFD simulation results.
A Numerical and Graphical Review of Energy Storage Technologies

More effective energy production requires a greater penetration of storage technologies. This paper takes a looks at and compares the landscape of energy storage devices. Solutions across four categories of storage namely: mechanical chemical electromagnetic and thermal storage are compared on the basis of energy/power density specific energy/power efficiency lifespan cycle life self-discharge rates capital energy/power costs scale application technical maturity as well as environmental impact. It’s noted that virtually every storage technology is seeing improvements. This paper provides an overview of some of the problems with existing storage systems and identifies some key technologies that hold promise.
Baselining the Body of Knowledge for Hydrogen Shock Interactions and Debris Escalation

The differences in behaviour of hydrogen when compared to natural gas under deflagration and detonation scenarios are well known. The authors currently work in the area of fire and explosion analysis and have identified what they feel are potential gaps in the current Body of Knowledge (BOK) available to the sector. This is especially related to the behaviour around secondary shock formation and interactions with surrounding structures especially with ‘open’ structures such as steel frameworks typically seen in an offshore environment and practicable methods for determining debris formation and propagation. Whilst the defence sector has extensive knowledge in these areas this is primarily in the area of high explosives where the level of shocks observed is stronger than those resulting from a hydrogen detonation. This information would need to be reviewed and assessed to ensure it is appropriate for application in the hydrogen sector. Therefore with a focus on practicality the authors have undertaken a two-phase approach. The first phase involves carrying out a through literature search and discussions within our professional networks in order to ascertain whether there is a gap in the BOK. If good research guidance and tools to support this area of assessment already exist the authors have attempted to collate and consolidate this into a form that can be made more easily available to the community. Secondly if there is indeed a gap in the BOK the authors have attempted to ensure that all relevant information is collated to act as a reference and provide a consistent baseline for future research and development activities.
Prospects of Fuel Cell Combined Heat and Power Systems

Combined heat and power (CHP) in a single and integrated device is concurrent or synchronized production of many sources of usable power typically electric as well as thermal. Integrating combined heat and power systems in today’s energy market will address energy scarcity global warming as well as energy-saving problems. This review highlights the system design for fuel cell CHP technologies. Key among the components discussed was the type of fuel cell stack capable of generating the maximum performance of the entire system. The type of fuel processor used was also noted to influence the systemic performance coupled with its longevity. Other components equally discussed was the power electronics. The thermal and water management was also noted to have an effect on the overall efficiency of the system. Carbon dioxide emission reduction reduction of electricity cost and grid independence were some notable advantages associated with fueling cell combined heat and power systems. Despite these merits the high initial capital cost is a key factor impeding its commercialization. It is therefore imperative that future research activities are geared towards the development of novel and cheap materials for the development of the fuel cell which will transcend into a total reduction of the entire system. Similarly robust systemic designs should equally be an active research direction. Other types of fuel aside hydrogen should equally be explored. Proper risk assessment strategies and documentation will similarly expand and accelerate the commercialization of this novel technology. Finally public sensitization of the technology will also make its acceptance and possible competition with existing forms of energy generation feasible. The work in summary showed that proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM fuel cell) operated at a lower temperature-oriented cogeneration has good efficiency and is very reliable. The critical issue pertaining to these systems has to do with the complication associated with water treatment. This implies that the balance of the plant would be significantly affected; likewise the purity of the gas is crucial in the performance of the system. An alternative to these systems is the PEM fuel cell systems operated at higher temperatures.
Optimal Scheduling of Multi-energy Type Virtual Energy Storage System in Reconfigurable Distribution Networks for Congestion Management

The virtual energy storage system (VESS) is one of the emerging novel concepts among current energy storage systems (ESSs) due to the high effectiveness and reliability. In fact VESS could store surplus energy and inject the energy during the shortages at high power with larger capacities compared to the conventional ESSs in smart grids. This study investigates the optimal operation of a multi-carrier VESS including batteries thermal energy storage (TES) systems power to hydrogen (P2H) and hydrogen to power (H2P) technologies in hydrogen storage systems (HSS) and electric vehicles (EVs) in dynamic ESS. Further demand response program (DRP) for electrical and thermal loads has been considered as a tool of VESS due to the similar behavior of physical ESS. In the market three participants have considered such as electrical thermal and hydrogen markets. In addition the price uncertainties were calculated by means of scenarios as in stochastic programming while the optimization process and the operational constraints were considered to calculate the operational costs in different ESSs. However congestion in the power systems is often occurred due to the extreme load increments. Hence this study proposes a bi-level formulation system where independent system operators (ISO) manage the congestion in the upper level while VESS operators deal with the financial goals in the lower level. Moreover four case studies have considered to observe the effectiveness of each storage system and the simulation was modeled in the IEEE 33-bus system with CPLEX in GAMS.
Stand-off Detection of Hydrogen Concentration

The ability to remotely monitor hydrogen and map its concentration is a pressing challenge in large scale production and distribution as well as other sectors such as nuclear storage. We present a photonicsbased approach for the stand-off sensing and mapping of hydrogen concentration capable of detecting and locating <0.1% concentrations at 100m distance. The technique identifies the wavelength of light resulting from interaction with laser pulses via Raman scattering and can identify a range of other gas species e.g. hydrocarbons ammonia by the spectroscopic analysis of the wavelengths present in the return signal. LIDAR Light Detection and Ranging – analogous to Radar is used for ranging. Laserbased techniques for the stand-off detection of hydrocarbons frequently employ absorption of light at specific wavelengths which are characteristic of the gas species. Unfortunately Hydrogen does not exhibit strong absorption however it does exhibit strong Raman scattering when excited in the UV wavelength range. Raman scattering is a comparatively weak effect. However the use of solid-state detectors capable of detecting single photons known as SPADS (Single Photon Avalanche Photodiode) enables the detection of low concentrations at range while making use of precise time-of-flight range location correlation. The initial safety case which necessitated our development of stand-off hydrogen sensing was the condition monitoring of stored nuclear waste supported and funded by Sellafield and the National Nuclear Laboratory in the UK. A deployable version of the device has been developed and hydrogen characterisation has been carried out in an active nuclear store. Prior to deployment a full ignition risk assessment was carried out. To the best of our knowledge this technique is the strongest candidate for the remote stand-off sensing of hydrogen.

How much hydrogen can be blended with natural gas depends on the rules and regulation of each country. The general consensus is that blending 10% by volume of hydrogen presents no safety concerns or specific difficulties. This would provide an opportunity to develop low hydrogen markets. Nevertheless blending should not be the end destination. It is not sufficient to meet carbon abatement targets.
Low carbon ammonia has a role to play in the new hydrogen economy. It is a proven and understood technology which is easier to move around the world and could be used directly as ammonia or cracked back into hydrogen.
One of the main focus today should be to replace grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in existing supply chains as there would be no efficiency losses in the process.
In China the push for hydrogen is transport-related. This is driven by air quality and energy independence concerns. In the next 10 years the full life cost of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is expected to be lower than for internal combustion engines. This is due to the fact that FCEVs require less maintenance and that the residual value in the fuel cells is relatively high. At the end of life 95% of the platinum in fuel cells can be repurposed.
FCEVs should not be regarded as competing with battery electric vehicles they sit next to each other on product maps. FCEVs can benefit from the all of the advances in electric drive train systems and electric motors.
To close the webinar attendees were asked whether hydrogen was going through another hype cycle or if it was here to stay. 10% answered hype and 90% here to stay.

Effect of Bipolar Plate Material on Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Performance

Commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells can only materials provided its performance is closely related to existing technologies useful in commercial application. Other critical parameters like the utilization of cheaper materials should be taken into account during the manufacturing of the cell. A key component in the cell that has direct correlation to the cell perfor‐ mance is the flow plate. The weight coupled with cost of the cell revolves around the flow plate used in the manufacturing of the cell. This study explores materials ideal for the manufacturing of fuel cells in order to improve the overall cell performance. The investigation highlights the critical impact of varying materials used in the manufacturing of flow plates for PEM fuel cells. Stainless steel (SS) aluminium (Al) and copper (Cu) were the materials considered. The flow plate designs considered were serpentine and open pore cellular foam channel. Machine learning using python for the validation of the results with Linear regression Ridge regression and Polynomial regression algorithm was carried out. The performance of both flow field channels was compared using dif‐ ferent bipolar plate materials. The results show that metal foam flow channels overall performance was better than serpentine flow channels with all the various bipolar plate material used and Al material outperformed Cu and SS material. There is a direct correlation in terms of the outcome of the study and literature based on the data generated experimentally. It can however be concluded that molecules of hydrogen are stable on aluminium plates compared to copper and stainless steel
Numerical Simulations of Atmospheric Dispersion of Large-scale Liquid Hydrogen Releases

Numerical simulations have been conducted for LH2 massive releases and the subsequent atmospheric dispersion using an in-house modified version of the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code OpenFOAM. A conjugate heat transfer model has been added for heat transfer between the released LH2 and the ground. Appropriate interface boundary conditions are applied to ensure the continuities of temperature and heat fluxes. The significant temperature difference between the cryogenic hydrogen and the ground means that the released LH2 will instantly enter in a boiling state resulting in a hydrogen- air gaseous cloud which will initially behave like a dense gas. Numerical predictions have been conducted for the subsequent atmospheric dispersion of the vaporized LH2 for a series of release scenarios - with and without retention pits - to limit the horizontal spread of the LH2 on the ground. The considered cases included the instantaneous release of 1 10 and 50 tons of LH2 under neutral (D) and stable (F) weather conditions. More specifically 3F and 5D conditions were simulated with the former representing stable weather conditions under wind speed of 3 m/s at 10 m above the ground and the later corresponding to neutral weather conditions under 5 m/s wind speed (10 m above the ground). Specific numerical tests have also been conducted for selected scenarios under different ambient temperatures from 233 up to 313 K. According to the current study although the retention pit can extend the dispersion time it can significantly reduce the extent of hazards due to much smaller cloud size within both the flammability and explosion limits. While the former has negative impact on safety the later is beneficial. The use of retention pit should hence be considered with caution in practical applications.
Hydrogen-assisted Fatigue Crack Growth: Pre-charging vs In-situ Testing in Gaseous Environments

We investigate the implications of conducting hydrogen-assisted fatigue crack growth experiments in a hydrogen gas environment (in-situ hydrogen charging) or in air (following exposure to hydrogen gas). The study is conducted on welded 42CrMo4 steel a primary candidate for the future hydrogen transport infrastructure allowing us to additionally gain insight into the differences in behavior between the base steel and the coarse grain heat affected zone. The results reveal significant differences between the two testing approaches and the two weld regions. The differences are particularly remarkable for the comparison of testing methodologies with fatigue crack growth rates being more than one order of magnitude higher over relevant loading regimes when the samples are tested in a hydrogen-containing environment relative to the pre-charged samples. Aided by finite element modelling and microscopy analysis these differences are discussed and rationalized. Independent of the testing approach the heat affected zone showed a higher susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. Similar microstructural behavior is observed for both testing approaches with the base metal exhibiting martensite lath decohesion while the heat affected zone experienced both martensite lath decohesion and intergranular fracture.

The Energy Innovation Needs Assessment (EINA) aims to identify the key innovation needs across the UK’s energy system to inform the prioritisation of public sector investment in low-carbon innovation. Using an analytical methodology developed by the Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the EINA takes a systemlevel approach and values innovations in a technology in terms of the system-level benefits a technology innovation provides.1. This whole system modelling in line with BEIS’s EINA methodology was delivered by the Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) using the Energy System Modelling Environment (ESMETM) as the primary modelling tool.
To support the overall prioritisation of innovation activity the EINA process analyses key technologies in more detail. These technologies are grouped together into sub-themes according to the primary role they fulfil in the energy system. For key technologies within a sub-theme innovations and business opportunities are identified. The main findings at the technology level are summarised in sub-theme reports. An overview report will combine the findings from each sub-theme to provide a broad system-level perspective and prioritisation.
This EINA analysis is based on a combination of desk research by a consortium of economic and engineering consultants and stakeholder engagement. The prioritisation of innovation and business opportunities presented is informed by a workshop organised for each sub-theme assembling key stakeholders from the academic community industry and government.
This report was commissioned prior to advice being received from the CCC on meeting a net zero target and reflects priorities to meet the previous 80% target in 2050. The newly legislated net zero target is not expected to change the set of innovation priorities rather it will make them all more valuable overall. Further work is required to assess detailed implications.

Investigating the Implications of a New-build Hybrid Power System for Roll-on/Roll-off Cargo Ships from a Sustainability Perspective – A Life Cycle Assessment Case Study

Marine transport has been essential for international trade. Concern for its environmental impact was growing among regulators classification societies ship operators ship owners and other stakeholders. By applying life cycle assessment this article aimed to assess the impact of a new-build hybrid system (i.e. an electric power system which incorporated lithium ion batteries photovoltaic systems and cold-ironing) designed for Roll-on/Roll-off cargo ships. The study was carried out based on a bottom-up integrated system approach using the optimised operational profile and background information for manufacturing processes mass breakdown and end of life management plans. Resources such as metallic and non-metallic materials and energy required for manufacture operation maintenance dismantling and scrap handling were estimated. During operation 1.76 x 10^8 kg of marine diesel oil was burned releasing carbon monoxide carbon dioxide particulate matter hydrocarbons nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide which ranged 5–8 orders of magnitude. The operation of diesel gensets was the primary cause of impact categories that were relevant to particulate matter or respiratory inorganic health issues photochemical ozone creation eutrophication acidification global warming and human toxicity. Disposing metallic scrap was accountable for the most significant impact category ecotoxicity potential. The environmental benefits of the hybrid power system in most impact categories were verified in comparison with a conventional power system onboard cargo ships. The estimated results for individual impact categories were verified using scenario analysis. The study concluded that the life cycle of a new-build hybrid power system would result in significant impact on the environment human beings and natural reserves and therefore proper management of such a system was imperative.

Future Heat Series Part 1 - Pathways for Heat

Together the pathways examined in the report paint a picture of the nationwide transformation getting underway in how we heat our homes and buildings. The report identifies that by 2050 gas used to heat buildings could fall by 75-95% electricity increase from a 10% share today to 30-80% and district heat increase from less than 2% to up to a 40% share. At the same time energy efficiency could help to lower bills and offset the expected growth in our heating needs from an expanding population and building stock. Across most pathways examined in the report mass deployment of low carbon heat solutions ramps up in the lead-in to 2030. Carbon Connect’s overarching recommendation is that the next decade should be spent preparing by developing a robust strategy for decarbonising heat in buildings whilst testing and scaling up delivery models. The report calls for the next Government to prioritise these preparations in the same way that preparing for power sector decarbonisation has been the overriding focus of energy policy in the past decade. The Future Heat Series brings together politicians policy and academic experts and industry leaders. Together this coalition of key figures is taking stock of evidence progressing the policy debate in an open and constructive forum and building consensus for prioritising and transforming heat. Pathways for Heat is the first part of the Future Heat Series and presents six recommendations and over twenty findings.
Overview of Current Development in Electrical Energy Storage Technologies and the Application Potential in Power System Operation

Electrical power generation is changing dramatically across the world because of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to introduce mixed energy sources. The power network faces great challenges in transmission and distribution to meet demand with unpredictable daily and seasonal variations. Electrical Energy Storage (EES) is recognized as underpinning technologies to have great potential in meeting these challenges whereby energy is stored in a certain state according to the technology used and is converted to electrical energy when needed. However the wide variety of options and complex characteristic matrices make it difficult to appraise a specific EES technology for a particular application. This paper intends to mitigate this problem by providing a comprehensive and clear picture of the state-of-the-art technologies available and where they would be suited for integration into a power generation and distribution system. The paper starts with an overview of the operation principles technical and economic performance features and the current research and development of important EES technologies sorted into six main categories based on the types of energy stored. Following this a comprehensive comparison and an application potential analysis of the reviewed technologies are presented.

This policy briefing considers how the use of nuclear energy could be expanded to make the most of the energy produced and also to have the flexibility to complement an energy system with a growing input of intermittent renewable energy.<br/>What is nuclear cogeneration?<br/>Nuclear cogeneration is where the heat generated by a nuclear power station is used not only to generate electricity but to address some of the ‘difficult to decarbonise’ energy demands such as domestic heating and hydrogen production. It also enables a nuclear plant to be used more flexibly by switching between electricity generation and cogeneration applications.<br/>Applications for nuclear cogeneration<br/>Heat generated by civil nuclear reactors can be extracted at two different points for applications requiring either low-temperature or high-temperature heat. Fuel Cell Power Systems for Maritime Applications: Progress and Perspectives

Fuel cells as clean power sources are very attractive for the maritime sector which is committed to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas and atmospheric pollutant emissions from ships. This paper presents a technological review on fuel cell power systems for maritime applications from the past two decades. The available fuels including hydrogen ammonia renewable methane and methanol for fuel cells under the context of sustainable maritime transportation and their pre-processing technologies are analyzed. Proton exchange membrane molten carbonate and solid oxide fuel cells are found to be the most promising options for maritime applications once energy efficiency power capacity and sensitivity to fuel impurities are considered. The types layouts and characteristics of fuel cell modules are summarized based on the existing applications in particular industrial or residential sectors. The various research and demonstration projects of fuel cell power systems in the maritime industry are reviewed and the challenges with regard to power capacity safety reliability durability operability and costs are analyzed. Currently power capacity costs and lifetime of the fuel cell stack are the primary barriers. Coupling with batteries modularization mass production and optimized operating and control strategies are all important pathways to improve the performance of fuel cell power systems.
Technical and Commercial Challenges of Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells

This review critically evaluates the latest trends in fuel cell development for portable and stationary fuel cell applications and their integration into the automotive industry. Fast start-up high efficiency no toxic emissions into the atmosphere and good modularity are the key advantages of fuel cell applications. Despite the merits associated with fuel cells the high cost of the technology remains a key factor impeding its widespread commercialization. Therefore this review presents detailed information into the best operating conditions that yield maximum fuel cell performance. The paper recommends future research geared towards robust fuel cell geometry designs as this determines the cell losses and material characterization of the various cell components. When this is done properly it will support a total reduction in the cost of the cell which in effect will reduce the total cost of the system. Despite the strides made by the fuel cell research community there is a need for public sensitization as some people have reservations regarding the safety of the technology. This hurdle can be overcome if there is a well-documented risk assessment which also needs to be considered in future research activities.
Propulsion System Integration for a First-generation Hydrogen Civil Airliner?

An unusual philosophical approach is proposed here to decarbonise larger civil aircraft that fly long ranges and consume a large fraction of civil aviation fuel. These inject an important amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere and holistic decarbonising solutions must consider this sector. Backed by state-of-the-art correlations and engine performance integration analytical tools a family of large airliners is proposed based on the development and integration of the body of a very large two-deck four-engine airliner with the engines wings and flight control surfaces of a very long-range twin widebody jet. The proposal is for a derivative design and not a retrofit. This derivative design may enable a swifter entry to service. The main contribution of this study is a philosophical one: a carefully evaluated aircraft family that appears to have very good potential for first-generation hydrogen-fuelled airliners using gas turbine engines for propulsion. This family offers three variants: a 380-passenger aircraft with a range of 3300nm a 330-passenger aircraft with a range of 4800nm and a 230- passenger aircraft with a range of 5500nm. The latter range is crucially important because it permits travel from anywhere in the globe to anywhere else with only one stop. The jet engine of choice is a 450kN high-bypass turbofan.

Fuel Cells for Shipping: To Meet On-board Auxiliary Demand and Reduce Emissions

The reduction of harmful emissions from the international shipping sector is necessary. On-board energy demand can be categorised as either: propulsion or auxiliary services. Auxiliary services contribute a significant proportion of energy demand with major loads including: compressors pumps and HVAC (heating ventilation and air-conditioning). Typically this demand is met using the same fuel source as the main propulsion (i.e. fossil fuels). This study has analysed whether emissions from large scale ships could feasibly be reduced by meeting auxiliary demand by installing a hydrogen fuel cell using data from an LNG tanker to develop a case study. Simulations have shown that for a capacity of 10 x 40ft containers of compressed hydrogen the optimal fuel cell size would be 3 MW and this could save 10600 MWh of fossil fuel use equivalent to 2343 t of CO2. Hence this could potentially decarbonise a significant proportion of shipping energy demand. Although there are some notable technical and commercial considerations such as fuel cell lifetime and capital expenditure requirements. Results imply that if auxiliary loads could be managed to avoid peaks in demand this could further increase the effectiveness of this concept.
Assessment of Hydrogen Fuel for Rotorcraft Applications

This paper presents the application of a multidisciplinary approach for the preliminary design and evaluation of the potential improvements in performance and environmental impact through the utilization of compressed (CGH2) and liquefied (LH2) hydrogen fuel for a civil tilt-rotor modelled after the NASA XV-15. The methodology deployed comprises models for rotorcraft flight dynamics engine performance flight path analysis hydrogen tank and thermal management system sizing. Trade-offs between gravimetric efficiency energy consumption fuel burn CO2 emissions and cost are quantified and compared to the kerosene-fuelled rotorcraft. The analysis carried out suggests that for these vehicle scales gravimetric efficiencies of the order of 13% and 30% can be attained for compressed and liquid hydrogen storage respectively leading to reduced range capability relative to the baseline tilt-rotor by at least 40%. At mission level it is shown that the hydrogen-fuelled configurations result in increased energy consumption by at least 12% (LH2) and 5% (CGH2) but at the same time significantly reduced life-cycle carbon emissions compared to the kerosene counterpart. Although LH2 storage at cryogenic conditions has a higher gravimetric efficiency than CGH2 (at 700 bar) it is shown that for this class of rotorcraft the latter is more energy efficient when the thermal management system for fuel pressurization and heating prior to combustion is accounted for.
Optimising Onshore Wind with Energy Storage Considering Curtailment

Operating energy storage alongside onshore wind can improve its economics whilst providing a pathway for otherwise curtailed generation. In this work we present a framework to evaluate the economic potential of onshore wind co-located with battery storage (BS) and a hydrogen electrolyser (HE). This model is applied to a case study in Great Britain using historic data and considering local network charges and the cost of using curtailed power capturing an often neglected element of competition. We use a Markov Chain to model wind curtailment and determine the optimised scheduling of the storage as we vary price parameters and storage sizing. Finally by considering storage CAPEX and comparing against the case with no storage we can determine the value added (or lost) by different sized BS and HE for an onshore wind owner as a function of power purchase agreement (PPA) and green hydrogen market price. Results show that value added increases when HE is increased and when BS is decreased. Additionally a 10 MW electrolysers uses 27% more curtailed wind than 10 MW BS.
Thermodynamic Performance and Creep Life Assessment Comparing Hydrogen- and Jet-Fueled Turbofan Aero Engine

There is renewed interest in hydrogen as an alternative fuel for aero engines due to their perceived environmental and performance benefits compared to jet fuel. This paper presents a cycle thermal performance energy and creep life assessment of hydrogen compared with jet fuel using a turbofan aero engine. The turbofan cycle performance was simulated using a code developed by the authors that allows hydrogen and jet fuel to be selected as fuel input. The exergy assessment uses both conservations of energy and mass and the second law of thermodynamics to understand the impact of the fuels on the exergy destruction exergy efficiency waste factor ratio environmental effect factor and sustainability index for a turbofan aero engine. Finally the study looks at a top-level creep life assessment on the high-pressure turbine hot section influenced by the fuel heating values. This study shows performance (64% reduced fuel flow rate better SFC) and more extended blade life (15% increase) benefits using liquefied hydrogen fuel which corresponds with other literary work on the benefits of LH2 over jet fuel. This paper also highlights some drawbacks of hydrogen fuel based on previous research work and gives recommendations for future work aimed at maturing the hydrogen fuel concept in aviation.
Energy Storage Strategy - Phase 2

This document is phase 2 of the energy storage strategy study and it covers the storage challenges of the energy transition. We start in section 3 by covering historical and current natural gas imports into the UK and what these could look like in the future. In section 4 we explore what demand for hydrogen could look like – this has a high level of uncertainty and future policy decisions will have significant impacts on hydrogen volumes and annual variations. We generated two hydrogen storage scenarios based on National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios and the Climate Change Committee’s Sixth Carbon Budget to assess the future need for hydrogen storage in the UK. We also looked at an extreme weather scenario resulting from an area of high-pressure settled over the British Isles resulting in very low ambient temperatures an unusually high demand for heating and almost no wind generation. In section 5 we investigate options for hydrogen storage and build on work previously carried out by SGN. We discuss the differences between the properties of hydrogen and natural gas and how this affects line pack and depletion of line pack. We discuss flexibility on the supply and demand side and how this can impact on hydrogen storage. We provide a summary table which compares the various options for storage. In section 5 we explore hydrogen trade and options for import and export. Using information from other innovation projects we also discuss production of hydrogen from nuclear power and the impact of hybrid appliances on gas demand for domestic heat. In section 7 we discuss the outputs from a stakeholder workshop with about 40 stakeholders across industry academia and government. The workshop covered UK gas storage strategy to date hydrogen demand and corresponding storage scenarios to 2050 including consideration of seasonal variation and storage options.

Injection of Gaseous Hydrogen into a Natural Gas Pipeline

The injection of pure hydrogen at a T-junction into a horizontal pipe carrying natural gas is analysed computationally to understand the influence of blending and pipe geometry (diameter ratio various 90 orientations) on mixing for a target of 4.8e20% volume fraction hydrogen blend. The strongly inhomogeneous distribution of hydrogen within the pipe flow and on the pipe walls could indicate the location of potential pipe material degradation including embrittlement effects. The low molecular mass of hydrogen reduces the penetration of a side-branch flow and increases the buoyancy forces leading to stratification with high hydrogen concentrations on the upper pipe surface downstream of the branch. Top-side injection leads to the hydrogen concentration remaining >40% for up to 8 pipe diameters from the injection point for volumetric dilutions ( D) less than 30%. Under-side injection promotes mixing within the flow interior and reduces wall concentration at the lower surface compared to top-side injection. The practical implications for these results in terms of mixing requirements and the contrasting constraint of codes of practice and energy demands are discussed.
Investigation into the Cross-sensitivity of Domestic Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Hydrogen

Preliminary research suggests domestic carbon monoxide detectors with an electrochemical sensor are approximately 10 -20% sensitive to hydrogen atmospheres in their factory configuration. That is the display on a carbon monoxide detector would give a carbon monoxide reading of approximately 10-20% of the concentration of hydrogen it is exposed to. Current British standards require detectors to sound an alarm within three minutes when subjected to a continuous concentration of ≥ 300 ppm CO. This would equate to a concentration of 1500-3000 ppm hydrogen in air or approximately 3.75 – 7% %LEL. The current evacuation criteria for a natural gas leak in a domestic property is 20 %LEL indicating that standard carbon monoxide detectors could be used as cheap and reliable early warning systems for hydrogen leaks. Given the wide use of carbon monoxide detectors and the affordability of the devices the use of carbon monoxide detectors for hydrogen detection is of particular interest as the UK drives towards energy decarbonisation. Experiments to determine the exact sensitivity of a range of the most common domestic carbon monoxide detectors have been completed by DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing. Determining the effects of repeated exposure to varying concentrations of hydrogen in air on the sensitivity of electrochemical sensors allows recommendations to be made on their adoption as hydrogen detectors. Changing the catalysts used within the electrochemical cell would improve the sensitivity to hydrogen however simply calibrating the sensor to report a concentration of hydrogen rather than carbon monoxide would represent no additional costs to manufacturers. Having determined the suitability of such sensors at an early stage; the technology can then be linked with other technological developments required for the change to hydrogen for domestic heating (e.g. change in metering equipment and appliances). This report finds that from five simple and widely available carbon monoxide detectors the lowest sensitivity to hydrogen measured at the concentration required to sound an alarm within three minutes was approximately 10%. It was also discovered that as the hydrogen concentration was increased over the range tested the sensitivity to hydrogen also increased. It is proposed that coupling these devices with other elements of the domestic gas system would allow actions such as remote meter isolation or automatic warning signals sent to response services would provide a reliable and inherently safe system for protecting occupants as gas networks transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. In this respect it is noted that wireless linking of smoke and heat detectors for domestic application is already widely available in low-cost devices. This could be extended to CO detectors adapted for hydrogen use.

A Hydrogen Fuelled LH2 Tanker Ship Design

This study provides a detailed philosophical view and evaluation of a viable design for a large liquid hydrogen tanker fuelled by liquid hydrogen. Established methods for determining tank sizing ship stability and ship characteristics were used to evaluate the preliminary design and performance of the liquefied hydrogen tanker named ‘JAMILA’ designed specifically to transport liquid hydrogen. JAMILA is designed around four large liquid hydrogen tanks with a total capacity of ∼280000 m3 and uses the boil-off gas for propulsion for the loaded leg of the journey. The ship is 370 m long 75 m wide and draws 10.012 m at full load. It has a fully loaded displacement tonnage of 232000 tonnes to carry 20000 tonnes of hydrogen. Its propulsion system contains a combined-cycle gas turbine of approximately 50 MW. The volume of the hydrogen cargo pressurised to 0.5 MPa primarily determines the size and displacement of the ship.

Thermal Management System Architecture for Hydrogen-Powered Propulsion Technologies: Practices, Thematic Clusters, System Architectures, Future Challenges, and Opportunities

The thermal management system architectures proposed for hydrogen-powered propulsion technologies are critically reviewed and assessed. The objectives of this paper are to determine the system-level shortcomings and to recognise the remaining challenges and research questions that need to be sorted out in order to enable this disruptive technology to be utilised by propulsion system manufacturers. Initially a scientometrics based co-word analysis is conducted to identify the milestones for the literature review as well as to illustrate the connections between relevant ideas by considering the patterns of co-occurrence of words. Then a historical review of the proposed embodiments and concepts dating back to 1995 is followed. Next feasible thermal management system architectures are classified into three distinct classes and its components are discussed. These architectures are further extended and adapted for the application of hydrogen-powered fuel cells in aviation. This climaxes with the assessment of the available evidence to verify the reasons why no hydrogen-powered propulsion thermal management system architecture has yet been approved for commercial production. Finally the remaining research challenges are identified through a systematic examination of the critical areas in thermal management systems for application to hydrogen-powered air vehicles’ engine cooling. The proposed solutions are discussed from weight cost complexity and impact points of view by a system-level assessment of the critical areas in the field.

The report outlines the case for investment by businesses in the energy efficiency of their buildings and operations and highlights how this could help neutralise the threat to profitability posed by increasing energy bills energy price volatility and an increasing reliance on electricity in the commercial sector. The report highlights that business in the UK have the opportunity to not only reduce energy bills but increase their competitiveness and improve worker productivity through better designed buildings.
Optimising Air Quality Co-benefits in a Hydrogen Economy: A Case for Hydrogen-specific Standards for NOx Emissions

A global transition to hydrogen fuel offers major opportunities to decarbonise a range of different energyintensive sectors from large-scale electricity generation through to heating in homes. Hydrogen can be deployed as an energy source in two distinct ways in electrochemical fuel cells and via combustion. Combustion seems likely to be a major pathway given that it requires only incremental technological change. The use of hydrogen is not however without side-effects and the widely claimed benefit that only water is released as a by-product is only accurate when it is used in fuel cells. The burning of hydrogen can lead to the thermal formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx – the sum of NO + NO2) via a mechanism that also applies to the combustion of fossil fuels. NO2 is a key air pollutant that is harmful in its own right and is a precursor to other pollutants of concern such as fine particulate matter and ozone. Minimising NOx as a by-product from hydrogen boilers and engines is possible through control of combustion conditions but this can lead to reduced power output and performance. After-treatment and removal of NOx is possible but this increases cost and complexity in appliances. Combustion applications therefore require optimisation and potentially lower hydrogen-specific emissions standards if the greatest air quality benefits are to derive from a growth in hydrogen use
Hydrogen vs. Batteries: Comparative Safety Assessments for a High-Speed Passenger Ferry

Batteries and hydrogen constitute two of the most promising solutions for decarbonising international shipping. This paper presents the comparison between a battery and a proton-exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell version of a high-speed catamaran ferry with a main focus on safety. The systems required for each version are properly sized and fitted according to the applicable rules and their impact on the overall design is discussed. Hazards for both designs were identified; frequency and consequence indexes for them were input qualitatively following Novel Technology Qualification and SOLAS Alternative Designs and Arrangements while certain risk control options were proposed in order to reduce the risks of the most concerned accidental events. The highest ranked risks were analysed by quantitative risk assessments in PyroSim software. The gas dispersion analysis performed for the hydrogen version indicated that it is crucial for the leakage in the fuel cell room to be stopped within 1 s after being detected to prevent the formation of explosive masses under full pipe rupture of 33 mm diameter even with 120 air changes per hour. For the battery version the smoke/fire simulation in the battery room indicated that the firefighting system could achieve a 30% reduction in fire duration with firedoors closed and ventilation shut compared to the scenario without a firefighting system.
Ammonia: Zero-carbon Fertiliser, Fuel and Energy Storage

This briefing considers the opportunities and challenges associated with the manufacture and future use of zero-carbon ammonia which is referred to in this report as green ammonia. The production of green ammonia has the capability to impact the transition towards zero-carbon through the decarbonisation of its current major use in fertiliser production. Perhaps as significantly it has the following potential uses: • As a medium to store and transport chemical energy with the energy being released either by directly reacting with air or by the full or partial decomposition of ammonia to release hydrogen. • As a transport fuel by direct combustion in an engine or through chemical reaction with oxygen in the air in a fuel cell to produce electricity to power a motor. • To store thermal energy through the absorption of water and through phase changes between material states (for example liquid to gas).
SGN Project Report - Flame Visibility Risk Assessment

This report contains information on the relative risks of natural gas and hydrogen fires particularly regarding their visibility. The fires considered are those that could occur on the H100 Fife trial network. The H100 Fife project will connect a number of residential houses to 100% hydrogen gas supply. The project includes hydrogen production storage and a new distribution network. From a review of large and small-scale tests and incidents it is concluded that hydrogen flames are likely to be clearly visible for releases above 2 bar particularly for larger release rates. At lower pressures hydrogen flame visibility will be affected by ambient lighting background colour and release orientation although this is also the case for natural gas. Potential safety implications from lack of flame visibility are that SGN workers other utility workers or members of the public could inadvertently come into contact with an ignited release. However some releases would be detected through noise thrown soil or interaction with objects. From a workshop and review of risk reduction measures and analysis of historical interference damage incidents it is concluded that flames with the potential for reduced visibility are adequately controlled. This is due to the likelihood of such scenarios occurring being low and that the consequences of coming into contact with such a flame are unlikely to be severe. These conclusions are supported by cost-benefit analysis that shows that no additional risk mitigation measures are justified for the H100 project. It is recommended that the cost-benefit analysis is revisited before applying the approach to a network wider than the H100 project. It was observed that the addition of odorant at relevant concentrations did not have an effect on the visibility of hydrogen flames.

Regional Insights into Low-carbon Hydrogen Scale Up: World Energy Insights Working Paper

Following the release of the “Hydrogen on the Horizon” series in July and September 2021 the World Energy Council in collaboration with EPRI and PwC led a series of regional deep dives to understand regional differences within low-carbon hydrogen development. These regional deep dives aimed to uncover regional perspectives and differing dynamics for low-carbon hydrogen uptake.<br/>Although each region presents its own distinctive challenges and opportunities the deep dives revealed that the “regional paths” provide new insights into the global scaling up of low-carbon hydrogen in the coming years. In addition each region holds its own unique potential in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.<br/>Key Takeaways:<br/>1. Our new regional insights indicate that low-carbon hydrogen can play a significant role by 2040 across the world by supporting countries’ efforts towards achieving Paris Agreement goals whilst contributing to the diversity and security of their energy portfolios. This would require significant global trade flows of hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels.<br/>2. The momentum for hydrogen-based fuels is continuing to grow worldwide but differences are seen between regions – based on differing market activities and opportunities.<br/>3. Today moving from “whether” to “how” to develop low-carbon hydrogen highlights significant uncertainties which need to be addressed if hydrogen is to reach its full potential.<br/>Can the challenges in various supply chain options be overcome?<br/>Can hydrogen play a role in tackling climate change in the short term?<br/>Can bankable projects emerge and the gap between engineers and financers be bridged? Can the stability of supply of the main low-carbon hydrogen production sources be guaranteed?<br/>4. Enabling low-carbon hydrogen at scale would notably require greater coordination and cooperation amongst stakeholders worldwide to better mobilise public and private finance and to shift the focus to end-users and people through the following actions:<br/>Moving from production cost to end-use price<br/>Developing Guarantees of Origin schemes with sustainability requirements<br/>Developing a global monitoring and reporting tool on low-carbon hydrogen projects<br/>Better consideration of social impacts alongside economic opportunities

Here we report direct physical evidence that confinement of molecular hydrogen (H2) in an optimized nanoporous carbon results in accumulation of hydrogen with characteristics commensurate with solid H2 at temperatures up to 67 K above the liquid vapor critical temperature of bulk H2. This extreme densification is attributed to confinement of H2 molecules in the optimally sized micropores and occurs at pressures as low as 0.02 MPa. The quantities of contained solid-like H2 increased with pressure and were directly evaluated using in situ inelastic neutron scattering and confirmed by analysis of gas sorption isotherms. The demonstration of the existence of solid-like H2 challenges the existing assumption that supercritical hydrogen confined in nanopores has an upper limit of liquid H2 density. Thus this insight offers opportunities for the development of more accurate models for the evaluation and design of nanoporous materials for high capacity adsorptive hydrogen storage.
A Zero Carbon Route to the Supply of High-temperature Heat Through the Integration of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells and H2–O2 Combustion

Previously suggested options to achieve carbon neutrality involve the use of fossil fuels with carbon capture or exploiting biomass as sources of energy. Industrial high-temperature heating could possibly exploit electrical heating or combustion using hydrogen. However it is difficult to replace all the current coal or natural gas furnaces with these options for chemical industry. In this work a method that integrates solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) and H2–O2 combustion is proposed and the related parameters are modelled to analyze their impacts. There is no waste heat and waste emissions in the proposed option and all substances are recycled. Unlike previous research the heat required for SOEC operation is generated from H2 combustion. The best working condition is under thermoneutral voltage and the highest electricity-to-thermal efficiency that can be achieved is 86.88% under a current density of 12000 A/m2 and operating temperature of 750 ◦C. Ohmic overpotential has the greatest effect on electricity consumption and the anode activation overpotential is the second most important option. Increasing combustion product temperature cannot significantly improve thermal efficiency but can raise the available maximum thermal energy.
Techno-economic Assessment of Offshore Wind-to-hydrogen Scenarios: A UK Case Study

The installed capacity electricity generation from wind and the curtailment of wind power in the UK between 2011 and 2021 showed that penetration levels of wind energy and the amount of energy that is curtailed in future would continue to rise whereas the curtailed energy could be utilised to produce green hydrogen. In this study data were collected technologies were chosen systems were designed and simulation models were developed to determine technical requirements and levelised costs of hydrogen produced and transported through different pathways. The analysis of capital and operating costs of the main components used for onshore and offshore green hydrogen production using offshore wind including alternative strategies for hydrogen storage and transport and hydrogen carriers showed that a significant reduction in cost could be achieved by 2030 enabling the production of green hydrogen from offshore wind at a competitive cost compared to grey and blue hydrogen. Among all scenarios investigated in this study compressed hydrogen produced offshore is the most cost-effective scenario for projects starting in 2025 although the economic feasibility of this scenario is strongly affected by the storage period and the distance to the shore of the offshore wind farm. Alternative scenarios for hydrogen storage and transport such as liquefied hydrogen and methylcyclohexane could become more cost-effective for projects starting in 2050 when the levelised cost of hydrogen could reach values of about £2 per kilogram of hydrogen or lower.
Methodologies for Representing the Road Transport Sector in Energy System Models

Energy system models are often used to assess the potential role of hydrogen and electric powertrains for reducing transport CO2 emissions in the future. In this paper we review how different energy system models have represented both vehicles and fuel infrastructure in the past and we provide guidelines for their representation in the future. In particular we identify three key modelling decisions: the degree of car market segmentation the imposition of market share constraints and the use of lumpy investments to represent infrastructure. We examine each of these decisions in a case study using the UK MARKAL model. While disaggregating the car market principally affects only the transition rate to the optimum mix of technologies market share constraints can greatly change the optimum mix so should be chosen carefully. In contrast modelling infrastructure using lumpy investments has little impact on the model results. We identify the development of new methodologies to represent the impact of behavioural change on transport demand as a key challenge for improving energy system models in the future.

Future Electricity Series Part 3 - Power from Nuclear

This independent cross-party report highlights the key role that political consensus can play in helping to reduce the costs of nuclear power in the UK as well as other low carbon technologies. This political consensus has never been more important than in this ‘defining decade’ for the power sector. The report highlights that an immediate challenge facing the UK’s new build programme is agreeing with the European Commission a regime for supporting new nuclear power. Changing the proposed support package would not be an impossible task if made necessary but maintaining broad political consensus and considering the implications of delay are also important. The State Aid process is an important opportunity for scrutiny with the report demonstrating that shareholders for Hinkley Point C could see bigger returns (19-21%) than those typically expected for PFI projects (12-15%). However it is too early to conclude on the value for money of the Hinkley Point C agreement. Both the negotiation process and the resulting investment contract are important but there has been little transparency over either so far and the negotiations were not competitive. The inquiry calls for more urgency and better coordination in seizing the opportunity to reuse the UK’s plutonium stockpile.
The UK’s stockpile of separated plutonium presents opportunities to tackle a number of national strategic priorities including implementing long term solutions for nuclear waste developing new technologies that could redefine the sector laying the ground for new nuclear power and pursuing nuclear non-proliferation. Government has identified three ‘credible solutions’ for reuse and the report recommends that it now sets clearer criteria against which to assess options and identifies budgetary requirements to help expediate the process. The report also argues that Government should do more on new nuclear technologies that could redefine the sector – such as considering smaller reactors nuclear for industrial heat or hydrogen production and closed or thorium fuel cycles. The Government’s initial response to a review of nuclear R&D a year ago by the then Chief Scientific Advisor Sir John Beddington has been welcome and it needs to build on this. In particular the UK should capitalise upon its existing expertise and past experience to focus efforts where there is most strategic value. Nulcear waste. Having failed to date the Government must urgently revisit plans for finding a site to store nuclear waste underground for thousands of years. Implementing this is a crucial part of demonstrating that nuclear waste is a manageable challenge. Despite being rejected by Cumbria County Council the continuing strong support amongst communities in West Cumbria for hosting a site is a promising sign.
On affordability the report finds that it is not yet clear which electricity generation technologies will be cheapest in the 2020s and beyond. Coal and gas could get more expensive if fossil fuel and carbon prices rise whilst low carbon technologies could get cheaper as technology costs fall with more deployment. This is the main reason for adopting an ‘all of the above’ strategy including nuclear power until costs become clearer and there is broad consensus behind this general approach.
On security of supply the inquiry says that deployment of nuclear power is likely to be influenced more by the economics of system balancing rather than technical system balancing challenges which can be met with greater deployment of existing balancing tools. The cost of maintaining system security is likely to mean that the UK maintains at least some baseload capacity such as nuclear power to limit system costs.
On sustainability the report finds that the environmental impacts of nuclear power are comparable to some generation technologies and favourable to others although the long lived nature of some radioactive nuclear waste and the dual use potential of nuclear technology for civil and military applications create unique sustainability challenges which the UK is a world leader in managing.

A Review on Ports' Readiness to Facilitate International Hydrogen Trade

The existing literature on the hydrogen supply chains has knowledge gaps. Most studies focus on hydrogen production storage transport and utilisation but neglect ports which are nexuses in the supply chains. To fill the gap this paper focuses on ports' readiness for the upcoming hydrogen international trade. Potential hydrogen exporting and importing ports are screened. Ports' readiness for hydrogen export and import are reviewed from perspectives of infrastructure risk management public acceptance regulations and standards and education and training. The main findings are: (1) liquid hydrogen ammonia methanol and LOHCs are suitable forms for hydrogen international trade; (2) twenty ports are identified that could be first movers; among them twelve are exporting ports and eight are importing ports; (3) ports’ readiness for hydrogen international trade is still in its infancy and the infrastructure construction or renovation risk management measures establishment of regulations and standards education and training all require further efforts.
Moving Toward the Low-carbon Hydrogen Economy: Experiences and Key Learnings from National Case Studies

The urgency to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050 as first presented by the IPCC special report on 1.5°C Global Warming has spurred renewed interest in hydrogen to complement electrification for widespread decarbonization of the economy. We present reflections on estimates of future hydrogen demand optimization of infrastructure for hydrogen production transport and storage development of viable business cases and environmental impact evaluations using life cycle assessments. We highlight challenges and opportunities that are common across studies of the business cases for hydrogen in Germany the UK the Netherlands Switzerland and Norway. The use of hydrogen in the industrial sector is an important driver and could incentivise large-scale hydrogen value chains. In the long-term hydrogen becomes important also for the transport sector. Hydrogen production from natural gas with capture and permanent storage of the produced CO2 (CCS) enables large-scale hydrogen production in the intermediate future and is complementary to hydrogen from renewable power. Furthermore timely establishment of hydrogen and CO2 infrastructures serves as an anchor to support the deployment of carbon dioxide removal technologies such as direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) and biohydrogen production with CCS. Significant public support is needed to ensure coordinated planning governance and the establishment of supportive regulatory frameworks which foster the growth of hydrogen markets.
HyDeploy2: Summary of Procedures for the Trial Network

The assessment of appropriate operational procedures to govern the injection of a hydrogen/natural gas blend into Northern Gas Networks’ (NGN) Winlaton gas distribution network was a key requirement of the HyDeploy2 project. To perform this assessment the review was broken down into two areas procedures upstream of the emergency control valve (owned by NGN) and procedures downstream of the Emergency Control Valve (procedures which would be performed by Gas Safe registered individuals). Assessment of the upstream procedures was led by NGN (own and carry out all upstream procedures on NGN’s gas network) and assessment of the downstream procedures was led by Blue Flame Associates (an industry expert on downstream gas procedures).<br/>Methodologies were adopted to be able to highlight procedures that could potentially be used on the Winlaton trial network during the hydrogen blended gas injection period and if they were impacted by the changing of the gas within the network from natural gas to hydrogen blended gas. This method determined that for downstream gas procedures a total of 56 gas procedures required expert review resulting in 80 technical questions to be assessed and for the upstream gas procedures a total of 80 gas procedures required expert review resulting in 266 technical questions to be assessed.<br/>The operational procedures assessment has led to a determination as to whether a change is or is not required for relevant operational procedures where a basis of concern existed with respect to the injection of hydrogen blended gas. Any requirements to modify an existing procedure has been given in this report referencing the source as to where the detailed analysis for the change/no change recommendation has been given.<br/>The assessment took into account the associated experimental and research carried out as part of the HyDeploy and HyDeploy2 projects such as the assessment of gas characteristics materials impact appliance survey of assets on the Winlaton network and impact of hydrogen blended gas on gas detection equipment references to these studies have been given accordingly to associated impacted operational procedures.<br/>The conclusion of the assessment is that for upstream gas procedures there are some operational procedures that are unchanged some that require an increase in the frequency as to how often they are performed and some procedures which require a technical modification. For downstream domestic gas procedures all procedures applicable to a domestic gas installation were deemed to not be detrimentally affected by the introduction of a 20 mol% hydrogen blend.<br/>For upstream gas procedures an appropriate training package will be built off the back of the results presented in this report and disseminated accordingly to all relevant Operatives that will be responsible for the safety operation and maintenance of the Winlaton network during the hydrogen blend injection period. Comparative Sustainability Study of Energy Storage Technologies Using Data Envelopment Analysis

The transition to energy systems with a high share of renewable energy depends on the availability of technologies that can connect the physical distances or bridge the time differences between the energy supply and demand points. This study focuses on energy storage technologies due to their expected role in liberating the energy sector from fossil fuels and facilitating the penetration of intermittent renewable sources. The performance of 27 energy storage alternatives is compared considering sustainability aspects by means of data envelopment analysis. To this end storage alternatives are first classified into two clusters: fast-response and long-term. The levelized cost of energy energy and water consumption global warming potential and employment are common indicators considered for both clusters while energy density is used only for fast-response technologies where it plays a key role in technology selection. Flywheel reveals the highest efficiency between all the fast-response technologies while green ammonia powered with solar energy ranks first for long-term energy storage. An uncertainty analysis is incorporated to discuss the reliability of the results. Overall results obtained and guidelines provided can be helpful for both decision-making and research and development purposes. For the former we identify the most appealing energy storage options to be promoted while for the latter we report quantitative improvement targets that would make inefficient technologies competitive if attained. This contribution paves the way for more comprehensive studies in the context of energy storage by presenting a powerful framework for comparing options according to multiple sustainability indicators.
A Multi-period Sustainable Hydrogen Supply Chain Model Considering Pipeline Routing and Carbon Emissions: The Case Study of Oman

This paper presents a mathematical model for a multi-period hydrogen supply chain design problem considering several design features not addressed in other studies. The model is formulated as a mixed-integer program allowing the production and storage facilities to be extended over time. Pipeline and tube trailer transport modes are considered for carrying hydrogen. The model also allows finding the optimal pipeline routes and the number of transport units. The objective is to obtain an efficient supply chain design within a given time frame in a way that the demand and carbon dioxide emissions constraints are satisfied and the total cost is minimized. A computer program is developed to ease the problem-solving process. The computer program extracts the geographical information from Google Maps and solves the problem using an optimization solver. Finally the applicability of the proposed model is demonstrated in a case study from Oman.

Technology Roadmaps for Transition Management: The Case of Hydrogen Energy

Technology roadmaps are increasingly used by governments to inform and promote technological transitions such as a transition to a hydrogen energy system. This paper develops a framework for understanding how current roadmapping practice relates to emerging theories of the governance of systems innovation. In applying this framework to a case study of hydrogen roadmaps the paper finds that roadmapping for transitions needs to place greater emphasis on ensuring good quality and transparent analytic and participatory procedures. To be most useful roadmaps should be embedded within institutional structures that enable the incorporation of learning and re-evaluation but in practice most transition roadmaps are one-off exercises
Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen Storage Technologies for Railway Engineering: A Review

According to the specific requirements of railway engineering a techno-economic comparison for onboard hydrogen storage technologies is conducted to discuss their feasibility and potentials for hydrogen-powered hybrid trains. Physical storage methods including compressed hydrogen (CH2 ) liquid hydrogen (LH2 ) and cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2 ) and material-based (chemical) storage methods such as ammonia liquid organic hydrogen carriages (LOHCs) and metal hydrides are carefully discussed in terms of their operational conditions energy capacity and economic costs. CH2 technology is the most mature now but its storage density cannot reach the final target which is the same problem for intermetallic compounds. In contrast LH2 CcH2 and complex hydrides are attractive for their high storage density. Nevertheless the harsh working conditions of complex hydrides hinder their vehicular application. Ammonia has advantages in energy capacity utilisation efficiency and cost especially being directly utilised by fuel cells. LOHCs are now considered as a potential candidate for hydrogen transport. Simplifying the dehydrogenation process is the important prerequisite for its vehicular employment. Recently increasing novel hydrogen-powered trains based on different hydrogen storage routes are being tested and optimised across the world. It can be forecasted that hydrogen energy will be a significant booster to railway decarbonisation.
Optimising Fuel Supply Chains within Planetary Boundaries: A Case Study of Hydrogen for Road Transport in the UK

The world-wide sustainability implications of transport technologies remain unclear because their assessment often relies on metrics that are hard to interpret from a global perspective. To contribute to filling this gap here we apply the concept of planetary boundaries (PBs) i.e. a set of biophysical limits critical for operating the planet safely to address the optimal design of sustainable fuel supply chains (SCs) focusing on hydrogen for vehicle use. By incorporating PBs into a mixed-integer linear programming model (MILP) we identify SC configurations that satisfy a given transport demand while minimising the PBs transgression level i.e. while reducing the risk of surpassing the ecological capacity of the Earth. On applying this methodology to the UK we find that the current fossil-based sector is unsustainable as it transgresses the energy imbalance CO2 concentration and ocean acidification PBs heavily i.e. five to 55-fold depending on the downscale principle. The move to hydrogen would help to reduce current transgression levels substantially i.e. reductions of 9–86% depending on the case. However it would be insufficient to operate entirely within all the PBs concurrently. The minimum impact SCs would produce hydrogen via water electrolysis powered by wind and nuclear energy and store it in compressed form followed by distribution via rail which would require as much as 37 TWh of electricity per year. Our work unfolds new avenues for the incorporation of PBs in the assessment and optimisation of energy systems to arrive at sustainable solutions that are entirely consistent with the carrying capacity of the planet.
Estimates of the Decarbonization Potential of Alternative Fuels for Shipping as a Function of Vessel Type, Cargo, and Voyage

Fuel transition can decarbonize shipping and help meet IMO 2050 goals. In this paper HFO with CCS LNG with CCS bio-methanol biodiesel hydrogen ammonia and electricity were studied using empirical ship design models from a fleet-level perspective and at the Tank-ToWake level to assist operators technology developers and policy makers. The cargo attainment rate CAR (i.e. cargo that must be displaced due to the low-C propulsion system) the ES (i.e. TTW energy needed per ton*n.m.) the CS (economic cost per ton*n.m.) and the carbon intensity index CII (gCO2 per ton*n.m.) were calculated so that the potential of the various alternatives can be compared quantitatively as a function of different criteria. The sensitivity of CAR towards ship type fuel type cargo type and voyage distance were investigated. All ship types had similar CAR estimates which implies that considerations concerning fuel transition apply equally to all ships (cargo containership tankers). Cargo type was the most sensitive factor that made a ship either weight or volume critical indirectly impacting on the CAR of different fuels; for example a hydrogen ship is weight-critical and has 2.3% higher CAR than the reference HFO ship at 20000 nm. Voyage distance and fuel type could result in up to 48.51% and 11.75% of CAR reduction. In addition to CAR the ES CS and CII for a typical mission were calculated and it was found that HFO and LNG with CCS gave about 20% higher ES and CS than HFO and biodiesel had twice the cost while ammonia methanol and hydrogen had 3–4 times the CS of HFO and electricity about 20 times suggesting that decarbonisation of the world’s fleet will come at a large cost. As an example of including all factors in an effort to create a normalized scoring system an equal weight was allocated to each index (CAR ES CS and CII). Biodiesel achieved the highest score (80%) and was identified as the alternative with the highest potential for a deep-seagoing containership followed by ammonia hydrogen bio-methanol and CCS. Electricity has the lowest normalized score of 33%. A total of 100% CAR is achievable by all alternative fuels but with compromises in voyage distance or with refuelling. For example a battery containership carrying an equal amount of cargo as an HFO-fuelled containership can only complete 13% of the voyage distance or needs refuelling seven times to complete 10000 n.m. The results can guide decarbonization strategies at the fleet level and can help optimise emissions as a function of specific missions.
Assessment of Operability and Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Requirements for Transmission Pipelines and Installations in Hydrogen Service

Experimental Parameters of Ignited Congestion Experiments of Liquid Hydrogen in the PRESLHY Project

Liquid hydrogen (LH2) has the potential to form part of the UK energy strategy in the future and therefore could see widespread use due to the relatively high energy density when compared to other renewable energy sources. To study the feasibility of this the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) funded project PRESLHY undertook pre-normative research for the safe use of cryogenic LH2 in non-industrial settings. Several key scenarios were identified as knowledge gaps and both theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to provide insight into these scenarios. This included experiments studying the effect of congestion on an ignited hydrogen plume that develops from a release of LH2; this paper describes the objectives experimental setup and a summary of the results from these activities. Characterisation of the LH2 release hydrogen concentration and temperatures measurements within the resulting gas cloud was undertaken along with pressure measurements both within the cloud and further afield. Various release conditions and congestion levels were studied. Results showed that at high levels of congestion increased overpressures occurred with the higher flow rates studied including one high order event. Data generated from these experiments is being taken forward to generate and validate theoretical models ultimately to contribute to the development of regulations codes and standards (RCS) for LH2."

This report presents the findings of the initial gap analysis and technical review of IGEM/SR/25 undertaken as a collaborative effort between HSE and DNV GL. The review is intended to help understand the steps which would be involved in updating the standard to include data appropriate for installations using H2 or an H2/NG blend. Furthermore the report highlights where additional research and updated data applicable to H2 installations is needed to enable development of an H2-specific supplement to the standard.<br/>A review of alternative approaches for area classification is presented. This review is aimed at determining whether existing standards or guidance provide methodologies which could be used as an alternative to IGEM/SR/25 for area classification of systems using either H2 or H2/NG blends. The review covers IGEM/SR/25 IGE/SR/23 EI15 BCGA guidance BS EN 60079:10:1 (including Quadvent) NFPA 497 API RP 505 and EIGA Doc. 121/14. Some of these are general like the British Standard BS EN 60079-10-1:2015 while others are industry specific like IGEM/SR/25 and EI15.<br/>Consideration is given to the methodology that each area classification approach presents for establishing the zone and zone size with particular focus on how factors such as ventilation and gas buoyancy are accounted for in the methods. The findings of the review indicate that none of the alternative approaches evaluated in the study provide an approach that is suitable for the gas industry for the area classification of gas network installations involving H2 or an H2/NG blend.

Assessment of Hydrogen Flame Length Full Bore Pipeline Rupture

The study aims at the development of a safety engineering methodology for the assessment of flame length after full-bore rupture of hydrogen pipeline. The methodology is validated using experimental data on hydrogen jet flame from full-bore pipeline rupture by Acton et al. (2010). The experimental pressure dynamics in the hydrogen pipeline system is simulated using previously developed adiabatic and “isothermal” blowdown models. The hydrogen release area is taken as equal similar to the experiment to doubled pipeline cross-section as hydrogen was coming out from both sides of the ruptured pipe. The agreement with the experimental pressure decay in the piping system was achieved using discharge coefficient CD=0.26 and CD=0.21 for adiabatic and “isothermal” blowdown model respectively that indicates significant friction and minor pressure losses. The hydrogen flame length was calculated using the dimensionless correlation by Molkov and Saffers (2013). The correlation relies on the density of hydrogen in the choked flow at the pipe exit. The maximum experimental flame length between 92 m and 111 m was recorded at 6 s after the pipe rupture under the ground. The calculated by the dimensionless correlation flame length is 110 m and 120 m for the “isothermal” and adiabatic blowdown model respectively. This is an acceptable accuracy for such a large-scale experiment. It is concluded that the methodology can be applied as an engineering tool to assess flame length resulting from ruptured hydrogen pipelines.
Techno-economic Viability of Islanded Green Ammonia as a Carbon-free Energy Vector and as a Substitute for Conventional Production

Decarbonising ammonia production is an environmental imperative given that it independently accounts for 1.8% of global carbon dioxide emissions and supports the feeding of over 48% of the global population. The recent decline of production costs and its potential as an energy vector warrant investigation of whether green ammonia production is commercially competitive. Considering 534 locations in 70 countries and designing and operating the islanded production process to minimise the levelised cost of ammonia (LCOA) at each we show the range of achievable LCOA the cost of process flexibility the components of LCOA and therein the scope of LCOA reduction achievable at present and in 2030. These results are benchmarked against ammonia spot prices cost per GJ of refined fuels and the LCOE of alternative energy storage methods. Currently a LCOA of $473 t1 is achievable at the best locations the required process flexibility increases the achievable LCOA by 56%; the electrolyser CAPEX and operation are the most significant costs. By 2030 $310 t1 is predicted to be achievable with multiple locations below $350 t1 . At $25.4 GJ11 ) that do not have the benefit of being carbon-free.

A Techno-economic Analysis of Ammonia-fuelled Powertrain Systems for Rail Freight

All diesel-only trains in the UK will be removed from services by 2040. High volumetric density rapid refuelling ability and sophisticated experience in infrastructure and logistics make ammonia a perfect hydrogen carrying fuel for rail freight which urgently requires an economically viable solution. This study conducted a novel techno-economic study of ammonia-fuelled fuel cell powertrains to be compared with current diesel engine-based system and emerging direct hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell system. The results demonstrate that hydrogen-fuelled Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) and ammonia-fuelled PEMFCs (using an ammonia cracker) are more cost-effective in terms of Levelized Cost of Electricity. The ammonia fuel storage requires 61.5-75 % less space compared to the hydrogen storage. Although the ammonia-fuelled Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) powertrain has the highest electricity generation efficiency (56%) the overall cost requires a major reduction by 70% before it could be considered as an economically viable solution.
Effect of TPRD Diameter and Direction of Release on Hydrogen Dispersion in Underground Parking

Unignited hydrogen release in underground parking could be considered inherently safer if the safety strategy to avoid the formation of the flammable hydrogen-air mixture under a ceiling is followed. This strategy excludes destructive deflagrative combustion and associated pressure and thermal effects in the case of ignition. This paper aims at understanding the effects of the thermally activated pressure relieve device (TPRD) diameter and direction of release on the build-up of hydrogen flammable concentration under the ceiling in the presence of mechanical ventilation required for underground parking. The study employs the similarity law for hydrogen jet concentration decay in a free under-expanded jet to find the lower limit of TPRD diameter that excludes the formation of a flammable mixture under the ceiling during upward release. This approach is conservative and does not include the effect of mechanical ventilation providing flow velocity around a few meters per second which is significantly below velocities in hydrogen momentum-dominated under-expanded jets. Hydrogen releases downwards under a vehicle at different angles and with different air velocities due to mechanical ventilation were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The joint effect of TPRD diameter release direction and mechanical ventilation is studied. TPRD diameters for the release of hydrogen upwards and downwards preventing the creation of flammable hydrogen-air mixture under the parking ceiling are defined for different ceiling heights and locations of TPRD above the floor. Recommendations to the design of TPRD devices to underpin the safe introduction of hydrogen fuelled vehicles in currently existing underground parking and infrastructure are formulated."
Techno Environmental Assessment of Flettner Rotor as Assistance Propulsion System for LH2 Tanker Ship Fuelled by Hydrogen

This study presents a novel design and development of a 280000 m3 liquefied hydrogen tanker ship by implementing a set of 6 Flettner rotors as an assistance propulsion system in conjunction with a combined-cycle gas turbine fuelled by hydrogen as a prime mover. The study includes assessment of the technical and environmental aspects of the developed design. Furthermore an established method was applied to simulate the LH2 tanker in different voyages and conditions to investigate the benefits of harnessing wind energy to assist combined-cycle gas turbine in terms of performance and emission reduction based on engine behaviour for different voyages under loaded and unloaded normal as well as 6 % degraded engine and varying ambient conditions. The results indicate that implementing a set of 6 Flettner rotors for the LH2 tanker ship has the potential to positively impact the performance and lead to environmental benefits. A maximum contribution power of around 1.8 MW was achieved in the winter season owing to high wind speed and favourable wind direction. This power could save approximately 3.6 % of the combined-cycle gas turbine total output power (50 MW) and cause a 3.5 % reduction in NOx emissions.

Ammonia has been identified as a sustainable fuel for transport and power applications. Similar to hydrogen ammonia is a synthetic product that can be obtained either from fossil fuels biomass or other renewable sources. Since the 1960’s considerable research has taken place to develop systems capable of burning the material in gas turbines. However it is not until recently that interest in ammonia has regained some momentum in the energy agenda as it is a carbon free carrier and offers an energy density higher than compressed hydrogen. . Therefore this work examines combustion stability and emissions from gaseous ammonia blended with methane or hydrogen in gas turbines. Experiments were carried out in a High Pressure Combustion Rig under atmospheric conditions employing a bespoke generic swirl burner. OH* Chemiluminescense was used for all trials to determine reactivity of the radical. Emissions were measured and correlated to equilibrium calculations using GASEQ. Results show that efficient combustion can be achieved with high power but at very narrow equivalence ratios using both hydrogen and methane blends. Moreover low concentrations of OH radicals are observed at high hydrogen content probably as a consequence of the high NH2 production.
Critical Parameters Controlling Wettability in Hydrogen Underground Storage - An Analytical Study

Hypothesis.<br/>The large-scale implementation of hydrogen economy requires immense storage spaces to facilitate the periodic storage/production cycles. Extensive modelling of hydrogen transport in porous media is required to comprehend the hydrogen-induced complexities prior to storage to avoid energy loss. Wettability of hydrogen-brine-rock systems influence flow properties (e.g. capillary pressure and relative permeability curves) and the residual saturations which are all essential for subsurface hydrogen systems.<br/>Model.<br/>This study aims to understand which parameters critically control the contact angle for hydrogen-brine-rock systems using the surface force analysis following the DLVO theory and sensitivity analysis. Furthermore the effect of roughness is studied using the Cassie-Baxter model.<br/>Findings.<br/>Our results reveal no considerable difference between H2 and other gases such as N2. Besides the inclusion of roughness highly affects the observed apparent contact angles and even lead to water-repelling features. It was observed that contact angle does not vary significantly with variations of surface charge and density at high salinity which is representative for reservoir conditions. Based on the analysis it is speculated that the influence of roughness on contact angle becomes significant at low water saturation (i.e. high capillary pressure).

Environmental-economic Sustainability of Hydrogen and Ammonia Fuels for Short Sea Shipping Operations

Alternative fuels of low or zero carbon content can decarbonise the shipping operations. This study aims at assessing the lifetime environmental-economic sustainability of ammonia and hydrogen as alternatives to diesel fuel for short sea shipping cargo vessels. A model is employed to calculate key performance indicators representing the lifetime financial sustainability and environmental footprint of the case ship using a realistic operating profile and considering several scenarios with different diesel substitution rates. Scenarios meeting the carbon emissions reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for 2030 are identified whereas policy measures for their implementation including the emissions taxation are discussed. The derived results demonstrate that the future implementation of carbon emissions taxation in the ranges of 136–965 €/t for hydrogen and 356–2647 €/t for ammonia can support these fuels financial sustainability in shipping. This study provides insights for adopting zero-carbon fuels and as such impacts the de-risking of shipping decarbonisation.
The Socio-technical Dynamics of Net-zero Industrial Megaprojects: Outside-in and Inside-out Analyses of the Humber Industrial Cluster

Although energy-intensive industries are often seen as ‘hard-to-decarbonise’ net-zero megaprojects for industrial clusters promise to improve the technical and economic feasibility of hydrogen fuel switching and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Mobilising insights from the megaproject literature this paper analyses the dynamics of an ambitious first-of-kind net-zero megaproject in the Humber industrial cluster in the United Kingdom which includes CCS and hydrogen infrastructure systems industrial fuel switching CO2 capture green and blue hydrogen production and hydrogen storage. To analyse the dynamics of this emerging megaproject the article uses a socio-technical system lens to focus on developments in technology actors and institutions. Synthesising multiple megaproject literature insights the paper develops a comprehensive framework that addresses both aggregate (‘outside-in’) developments and the endogenous (‘inside-out’) experiences and activities regarding three specific challenges: technical system integration actor coordination and institutional alignment. Drawing on an original dataset involving expert interviews (N = 46) site visits (N = 7) and document analysis the ‘outside-in’ analysis finds that the Humber megaproject has progressed rapidly from outline visions to specific technical designs enacted by new coalitions and driven by strengthening policy targets and financial support schemes. The complementary ‘inside-out’ analysis however also finds 12 alignment challenges that can delay or derail materialisation of the plans. While policies are essential aggregate drivers institutional misalignments presently also prevent project-actors from finalising design and investment decisions. Our analysis also finds important tensions between the project's high-pace delivery focus (to meet government targets) and allowing sufficient time for pilot projects learning-by-doing and design iterations.
Numerical Modelling of a Heavy-duty Diesel-hydrogen Dual-fuel Engine with Late High Pressure Hydrogen Direct Injection and Diesel Pilot

Direct gaseous fuel injection in internal combustion engines is a potential strategy for improving in-cylinder combustion processes and performance while reducing emissions and increasing hydrogen energy share (HES). Through use of numerical modelling the current study explores combustion in a compression ignition engine utilising a late compression/early power stroke direct gaseous hydrogen injection ignited by a diesel pilot at up to 99% HES. The combustion process of hydrogen in this type of engine is mapped out and compared to that of the same engine using methane direct injection. Four distinct phases of combustion are found which differ from that of pure diesel operation. Interaction of the injected gas jet with the chamber walls is found to have a considerable impact on performance and emission characteristics and is a factor which needs to be explored in greater detail in future studies. Considerable performance increase and carbon-based emission reductions are identified at up to 99% HES at high load but low load performance greatly deteriorated when 95% HES was exceeded due to a much reduced diesel pilot struggling to ignite the main hydrogen injection.
Development of Hydrogen Area Classification Data for Use in Village Trials

The natural gas industry proposes carrying out trials on limited parts of the gas network using hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas as a fuel. Ahead of these trials it is important to establish whether the zones of negligible extent that are typically applied to natural gas systems could still be considered zones of negligible extent for hydrogen. The standard IGEM/UP/16 is commonly used by the natural gas industry to carry out area classification for low pressure gas systems for example as found in boiler houses. However IGEM/UP/16 is not applicable to hydrogen. Therefore IGEM commissioned HSE’s Science Division to develop some data that could be used to feed into an area classification assessment for the village trials.<br/>This report identifies two main elements of IGEM/UP/16 which may not apply to hydrogen and suggests values for hydrogen-specific alternatives. These are the ventilation rate requirements to allow a zone to be deemed of negligible extent and the definition of a confined space.

Underground Hydrogen Storage: A UK Perspective

Hydrogen is anticipated to play a key role in global decarbonization and within the UK’s pathway to achieving net zero targets. However as the production of hydrogen expands in line with government strategies a key concern is where this hydrogen will be stored for later use. This study assesses the different large-scale storage options in geological structures available to the UK and addresses the surrounding uncertainties moving towards establishing a hydrogen economy. Currently salt caverns look to be the most favourable option considering their proven experience in the storage of hydrogen especially high purity hydrogen natural sealing properties low cushion gas requirement and high charge and discharge rates. However their geographical availability within the UK can act as a major constraint. Additionally a substantial increase in the number of new caverns will be necessary to meet the UK’s storage demand. Salt caverns have greater applicability as a good short-term storage solution however storage in porous media such as depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and saline aquifers can be seen as a long-term and strategic solution to meet energy demand and achieve energy security. Porous media storage solutions are estimated to have capacities which far exceed projected storage demand. Depleted fields have generally been well explored prior to hydrocarbon extraction. Although many saline aquifers are available offshore UK geological characterizations are still required to identify the right candidates for hydrogen storage. Currently the advantages of depleted gas reservoirs over saline aquifers make them the favoured option after salt caverns.
Price Promises, Trust Deficits and Energy Justice: Public Perceptions of Hydrogen Homes

In an era characterised by political instability economic uncertainty and mounting environmental pressures hydrogen fuel is being positioned as a critical piece of the global energy security and clean energy agenda. The policy push is noteworthy in the United Kingdom where the government is targeting industrial decarbonisation via hydrogen while exploring a potential role for hydrogen-fuelled home appliances. Despite the imperative to secure social acceptance for accelerating the diffusion of low-carbon energy technologies public perceptions of hydrogen homes remain largely underexplored by the researcher community. In response this analysis draws on extensive focus group data to understand the multi-dimensional nature of social acceptance in the context of the domestic hydrogen transition. Through an integrated mixed-methods multigroup analysis the study demonstrates that socio-political and market acceptance are strongly interlinked owing to a trust deficit in the government and energy industry coupled to underlying dissatisfaction with energy markets. At the community level hydrogen homes are perceived as a potentially positive mechanism for industrial regeneration and local economic development. Households consider short-term disruptive impacts to be tolerable provided temporary disconnection from the gas grid does not exceed three days. However to strengthen social acceptance clearer communication is needed regarding the spatial dynamics and equity implications of the transition. The analysis concludes that existing trust deficits will need to be overcome which entails fulfilling not only a ‘price promise’ on the cost of hydrogen appliances but also enacting a ‘price pledge’ on energy bills. These deliverables are fundamental to securing social acceptance for hydrogen homes.
Divergent Consumer Preferences and Visions for Cooking and Heating Technologies in the United Kingdom: Make Our Homes Clean, Safe, Warm and Smart!

Decarbonising the global housing stock is imperative for reaching climate change targets. In the United Kingdom hydrogen is currently being tested as a replacement fuel for natural gas which could be used to supply low-carbon energy to parts of the country. Transitioning the residential sector towards a net-zero future will call for an inclusive understanding of consumer preferences for emerging technologies. In response this paper explores consumer attitudes towards domestic cooking and heating technologies and energy appliances of the future which could include a role for hydrogen hobs and boilers in UK homes. To access qualitative evidence on this topic we conducted ten online focus groups (N = 58) with members of the UK public between February and April 2022. The study finds that existing gas users wish to preserve the best features of gas cooking such as speed responsiveness and controllability but also desire the potential safety and aesthetic benefits of electric systems principally induction hobs. Meanwhile future heating systems should ensure thermal comfort ease of use energy efficiency and smart performance while providing space savings and noise reduction alongside demonstrable green benefits. Mixed-methods multigroup analysis suggests divergence between support levels for hydrogen homes which implies a degree of consumer heterogeneity. Foremost we find that domestic hydrogen acceptance is positively associated with interest and engagement with renewable energy and fuel poverty pressures. We conclude that internalising the perspectives of consumers is critical to enabling constructive socio-technical imaginaries for low-carbon domestic energy futures.
Energy System Changes in 1.5 °C, Well Below 2 °C and 2 °C Scenarios

Meeting the Paris Agreement's goal to limit global warming to well below 2 °C and pursuing efforts towards 1.5 °C is likely to require more rapid and fundamental energy system changes than the previously-agreed 2 °C target. Here we assess over 200 integrated assessment model scenarios which achieve 2 °C and well-below 2 °C targets drawn from the IPCC's fifth assessment report database combined with a set of 1.5 °C scenarios produced in recent years. We specifically assess differences in a range of near-term indicators describing CO2 emissions reductions pathways changes in primary energy and final energy across the economy's major sectors in addition to more detailed metrics around the use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) negative emissions low-carbon electricity and hydrogen.
Cryogenic Hydrogen Jet and Flame for Clean Energy Applications: Progress and Challenges

Industries across the world are making the transition to net-zero carbon emissions as government policies and strategies are proposed to mitigate the impact of climate change on the planet. As a result the use of hydrogen as an energy source is becoming an increasingly popular field of research particularly in the aviation sector where an alternative green renewable fuel to the traditional hydrocarbon fuels such as kerosene is essential. Hydrogen can be stored in multiple ways including compressed gaseous hydrogen cryo-compressed hydrogen and cryogenic liquid hydrogen. The infrastructure and storage of hydrogen will play a pivotal role in the realisation of large-scale conversion from traditional fuels with safety being a key consideration. This paper provides a review on previous work undertaken to study the characterisation of both unignited and ignited hydrogen jets which are fundamental phenomena for the utilisation of hydrogen. This includes work that focuses on the near-field flow structure dispersion in the far-field ignition and flame characteristics with multi-physics. The safety considerations are also included. The theoretical models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) multiphase and reactive flow approaches are discussed. Then an overview of previous experimental work is provided before focusing the review on the existing computational results with comparison to experiments. Upon completion of this review it is highlighted that the complex near-field physics and flow phenomena are areas lacking in research. The near-field flow properties and characteristics are of significant importance with respect to the ignition and combustion of hydrogen.
Life Cycle Assessment of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle that Employs Hydrogen Fuel Cell

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the adoption of autonomous vehicles for marine and submarine missions. The advancement of emerging imaging navigation and communication technologies has greatly expanded the range of operational capabilities and opportunities available. The ENDURUNS project is a European research endeavor focused on identifying strategies for achieving minimal environmental impact. To measure these facts this article evaluates the product impacts employing the Life Cycle Assessment methodology for the first time following the ISO 14040 standard. In this analysis the quantitative values of Damage and Environmental Impact using the Eco-Indicator 99 methodology in SimaPro software are presented. The results report that the main contributors in environmental impact terms have been placed during the manufacturing phase. Thus one of the challenges is accomplished avoiding the use phase emissions that are the focus to reduce nowadays in the marine industry.
Synergistic Integration of Hydrogen Energy Economy with UK’s Sustainable Development Goals: A Holistic Approach to Enhancing Safety and Risk Mitigation

Hydrogen is gaining prominence as a sustainable energy source in the UK aligning with the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable development across diverse sectors. However a rigorous examination of the interplay between the hydrogen economy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is imperative. This study addresses this imperative by comprehensively assessing the risks associated with hydrogen production storage transportation and utilization. The overarching aim is to establish a robust framework that ensures the secure deployment and operation of hydrogen-based technologies within the UK’s sustainable development trajectory. Considering the unique characteristics of the UK’s energy landscape infrastructure and policy framework this paper presents practical and viable recommendations to facilitate the safe and effective integration of hydrogen energy into the UK’s SDGs. To facilitate sophisticated decision making it proposes using an advanced Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) tool incorporating regret theory and a 2-tuple spherical linguistic environment. This tool enables a nuanced decision-making process yielding actionable insights. The analysis reveals that Incident Reporting and Learning Robust Regulatory Framework Safety Standards and Codes are pivotal safety factors. At the same time Clean Energy Access Climate Action and Industry Innovation and Infrastructure are identified as the most influential SDGs. This information provides valuable guidance for policymakers industry stakeholders and regulators. It empowers them to make well-informed strategic decisions and prioritize actions that bolster safety and sustainable development as the UK transitions towards a hydrogen-based energy system. Moreover the findings underscore the varying degrees of prominence among different SDGs. Notably SDG 13 (Climate Action) exhibits relatively lower overall distinction at 0.0066 and a Relation value of 0.0512 albeit with a substantial impact.
