Hydrogen Emissions from the Hydrogen Value Chain-emissions Profile and Impact to Global Warming

Future energy systems could rely on hydrogen (H2) to achieve decarbonisation and net-zero goals. In a similar energy landscape to natural gas H2 emissions occur along the supply chain. It has been studied how current gas infrastructure can support H2 but there is little known about how H2 emissions affect global warming as an indirect greenhouse gas. In this work we have estimated for the first time the potential emission profiles (g CO2eq/MJ H2HHV) of H2 supply chains and found that the emission rates of H2 from H2 supply chains and methane from natural gas supply are comparable but the impact on global warming is much lower based on current estimates. This study also demonstrates the critical importance of establishing mobile H2 emission monitoring and reducing the uncertainty of short-lived H2 climate forcing so as to clearly address H2 emissions for net-zero strategies.
Modelling of Boil‐Off and Sloshing Relevant to Future Liquid Hydrogen Carriers

This study presents an approach for estimating fuel boil‐off behaviour in cryogenic energy carrier ships such as future liquid hydrogen (LH2) carriers. By relying on thermodynamic model‐ ling and empirical formulas for ship motion and propulsion the approach can be used to investigate boil‐off as a function of tank properties weather conditions and operating velocities during a laden voyage. The model is first calibrated against data from a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and is consequently used to investigate various design configurations of an LH2 ship. Results indicate that an LH2 ship with the same tank volume and glass wool insulation thickness as a conventional LNG carrier stores 40% of the fuel energy and is characterised by a boil‐off rate nine times higher and twice as sensitive to sloshing. Adding a reliquefaction unit can reduce the LH2 fuel depletion rate by at least 38.7% but can increase its variability regarding velocity and weather conditions. In calm weather LH2 boil‐off rates can only meet LNG carrier standards by utilising at least 6.6 times the insulation thickness. By adopting fuel cell propulsion in an LH2 ship a 1.1% increase in fuel delivery is expected. An LH2 ship with fuel cells and reliquefaction is required to be at least 1.7 times larger than an existing LNG carrierto deliverthe same energy. Further comparison of alternative scenarios indicates that LH2 carriers necessitate significant redesigns if LNG carrier standards are desired. The present approach can assist future feasibility studies featuring other vessels and propulsion technologies and can be seen as an extendable framework that can predict boil‐off in real‐time.
Towards 2050 Net Zero Carbon Infrastructure: A Critical Review of Key Decarbonisation Challenges in the Domestic Heating Sector in the UK

One of the most challenging sectors to meet “Net Zero emissions” target by 2050 in the UK is the domestic heating sector. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of the main challenges of heating systems transition to low carbon technologies in which three distinct categories of challenges are discussed. The first challenge is of decarbonizing heat at the supply side considering specifically the difficulties in integrating hydrogen as a low-carbon heating substitute to the dominant natural gas. The next challenge is of decarbonizing heat at the demand side and research into the difficulties of retrofitting the existing UK housing stock of digitalizing heating energy systems as well as ensuring both retrofits and digitalization do not disproportionately affect vulnerable groups in society. The need for demonstrating innovative solutions to these challenges leads to the final focus which is the challenge of modeling and demonstrating future energy systems heating scenarios. This work concludes with recommendations for the energy research community and policy makers to tackle urgent challenges facing the decarbonization of the UK heating sector.
Techno-Economic Evaluation of Deploying CCS in SMR Based Merchant H2 Production with NG as Feedstock and Fuel

Hydrogen is a crucial raw materials to other industries. Globally nearly 90% of the hydrogen or HyCO gas produced is consumed by the ammonia methanol and oil refining industries. In the future hydrogen could play an important role in the decarbonisation of transport fuel (i.e. use of fuel cell vehicles) and space heating (i.e. industrial commercial building and residential heating). This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility study carried out by Amec Foster Wheeler for the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) with the purpose of evaluating the performance and costs of a modern steam methane reforming without and with CCS producing 100000 Nm3 /h H2 and operating as a merchant plant. This study focuses on the economic evaluation of five different alternatives to capture CO2 from SMR. This paper provides an up-to-date assessment of the performance and cost of producing hydrogen without and with CCS based on technologies that could be erected today. This study demonstrates that CO2 could be captured from an SMR plant with an overall capture rate ranging between 53 to 90%. The integration of CO2 capture plant could increase the NG consumption by -0.03 to 1.41 GJ per Nm3 /h of H2. The amount of electricity exported to the grid by the SMR plant is reduced. The levelised cost of H2 production could increase by 2.1 to 5.1 € cent per Nm3 H2 (depending on capture rate and technology selected). This translates to a CO2 avoidance cost of 47 to 70 €/t.
Crack Management of Hydrogen Pipelines

The climate emergency is one of the biggest challenges humanity must face in the 21st century. The global energy transition faces many challenges when it comes to ensuring a sustainable reliable and affordable energy supply. A likely outcome is decarbonizing the existing gas infrastructure. This will inevitably lead to greater penetration of hydrogen. While the introduction of hydrogen into natural gas transmission and distribution networks creates challenges there is nothing new or inherently impossible about the concept. Indeed more than 4000 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines are currently in operation. These pipelines however were (almost) all built and operated exclusively in accordance with specific hydrogen codes which tend to be much more restrictive than their natural gas equivalents. This means that the conversion of natural gas pipelines which have often been in service for decades and have accumulated damage and been subject to cracking threats (e.g. fatigue or stress corrosion cracking (SCC)) throughout their lifetime can be challenging. This paper will investigate the impact of transporting hydrogen on the crack management of existing natural gas pipelines from an overall integrity perspective. Different cracking threats will be described including recent industry experience of those which are generic to all steel pipelines but exacerbated by hydrogen and those which are hydrogen specific. The application of a Hydrogen Framework to identify characterise and manage credible cracking threats to pipelines in order to help enable the safe economic and successful introduction of hydrogen into the natural gas network will be discussed.
Homes of the Future: Unpacking Public Perceptions to Power the Domestic Hydrogen Transition

Decarbonization in several countries is now linked to the prospect of implementing a national hydrogen economy. In countries with extensive natural gas infrastructure hydrogen may provide a real opportunity to decarbonize space heating. While this approach may prove technically and economically feasible in the longterm it is unclear whether consumers will be willing to adopt hydrogen-fueled appliances for heating and cooking should techno-economic feasibility be achieved. In response this paper develops an analytical framework for examining hydrogen acceptance which links together socio-technical barriers and social acceptance factors. Applying this framework the study synthesizes the existing knowledge on public perceptions of hydrogen and identifies critical knowledge gaps which should be addressed to support domestic hydrogen acceptance. The paper demonstrates that a future research agenda should account for the interactions between acceptance factors at the attitudinal socio-political market community and behavioral level. The analysis concludes that hydrogen is yet to permeate the public consciousness due to a lack of knowledge and awareness owing to an absence of information dissemination. In response consumer engagement in energy markets and stronger public trust in key stakeholders will help support social acceptance as the hydrogen transition unfolds. Affordability may prove the most critical barrier to the large-scale adoption of hydrogen homes while the disruptive impacts of the switchover and distributional injustice represent key concerns. As a starting point the promise of economic environmental and community benefits must be communicated and fulfilled to endorse the value of hydrogen homes.
Preliminary Analysis of Compression System Integrated Heat Management Concepts Using LH2-Based Parametric Gas Turbine Model

The investigation of the various heat management concepts using LH2 requires the development of a modeling environment coupling the cryogenic hydrogen fuel system with turbofan performance. This paper presents a numerical framework to model hydrogen-fueled gas turbine engines with a dedicated heat-management system complemented by an introductory analysis of the impact of using LH2 to precool and intercool in the compression system. The propulsion installations comprise Brayton cycle-based turbofans and first assessments are made on how to use the hydrogen as a heat sink integrated into the compression system. Conceptual tubular compact heat exchanger designs are explored to either precool or intercool the compression system and preheat the fuel to improve the installed performance of the propulsion cycles. The precooler and the intercooler show up to 0.3% improved specific fuel consumption for heat exchanger effectiveness in the range 0.5–0.6 but higher effectiveness designs incur disproportionately higher pressure losses that cancel-out the benefits.
Study on Applicability of Energy-Saving Devices to Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Ships

The decarbonisation of waterborne transport is arguably the biggest challenge faced by the maritime industry presently. By 2050 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry by 50% compared to 2008 with a vision to phase out fossil fuels by the end of the century as a matter of urgency. To meet such targets action must be taken immediately to address the barriers to adopt the various clean shipping options currently at different technological maturity levels. Green hydrogen as an alternative fuel presents an attractive solution to meet future targets from international bodies and is seen as a viable contributor within a future clean shipping vision. The cost of hydrogen fuel—in the shortterm at least—is higher compared to conventional fuel; therefore energy-saving devices (ESDs) for ships are more important than ever as implementation of rules and regulations restrict the use of fossil fuels while promoting zero-emission technology. However existing and emerging ESDs in standalone/combination for traditional fossil fuel driven vessels have not been researched to assess their compatibility for hydrogen-powered ships which present new challenges and considerations within their design and operation. Therefore this review aims to bridge that gap by firstly identifying the new challenges that a hydrogen-powered propulsion system brings forth and then reviewing the quantitative energy saving capability and qualitive additional benefits of individual existing and emerging ESDs in standalone and combination with recommendations for the most applicable ESD combinations with hydrogen-powered waterborne transport presented to maximise energy saving and minimise the negative impact on the propulsion system components. In summary the most compatible combination ESDs for hydrogen will depend largely on factors such as vessel types routes propulsion operation etc. However the mitigation of load fluctuations commonly encountered during a vessels operation was viewed to be a primary area of interest as it can have a negative impact on hydrogen propulsion system components such as the fuel cell; therefore the ESD combination that can maximise energy savings as well as minimise the fluctuating loads experienced would be viewed as the most compatible with hydrogen-powered waterborne transport.
Mapping Geological Hydrogen Storage Capacity and Regional Heating Demands: An Applied UK Case Study

Hydrogen is considered as a low-carbon substitute for natural gas in the otherwise difficult to decarbonise domestic heating sector. This study presents for the first time a globally applicable source to sink methodology and analysis that matches geological storage capacity with energy demand. As a case study it is applied to the domestic heating system in the UK with a focus on maintaining the existing gas distribution network. To balance the significant annual cyclicity in energy demand for heating hydrogen could be stored in gas fields offshore and transported via offshore pipelines to the existing gas terminals into the gas network. The hydrogen energy storage demand in the UK is estimated to be ~77.9 terawatt-hour (TWh) which is approximately 25 % of the total energy from natural gas used for domestic heating. The total estimated storage capacity of the gas fields included in this study is 2661.9 TWh. The study reveals that only a few offshore gas fields are required to store enough energy as hydrogen to balance the entire seasonal demand for UK domestic heating. It also demonstrates that as so few fields are required hydrogen storage will not compete for the subsurface space required for other low-carbon subsurface applications such as carbon storage or compressed air energy storage.
Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenolysis as an Efficient Route in Cleavage of Lignin and Model Compounds

Cleavage of aromatic ether bonds through hydrogenolysis is one of the most promising routes for depolymerisation and transformation of lignin into value-added chemicals. Instead of using pressurized hydrogen gas as hydrogen source some reductive organic molecules such as methanol ethanol isopropanol as well as formates and formic acid can serve as hydrogen donor is the process called catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis. This is an emerging and promising research field but there are very few reports. In this paper a comprehensive review of the works is presented on catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds aiming to breakdown the aromatic ethers including α-O-4 β-O-4 and 4-O-5 linkages with focus on reaction mechanisms. The works are organised regarding to different hydrogen donors used to gain an in-depth understanding of the special role of various hydrogen donors in this process. Perspectives on current challenges and opportunities of future research to develop catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis as a competitive and unique strategy for lignin valorisation are also provided.
Exploring Possible Transition Pathways for Hydrogen Energy: A Hybrid Approach Using Socio-technical Scenarios and Energy System Modelling

Hydrogen remains an important option for long-term decarbonisation of energy and transport systems. However studying the possible transition paths and development prospects for a hydrogen energy system is challenging. The long-term nature of technological transitions inevitably means profound uncertainties diverging perspectives and contested priorities. Both modelling approaches and narrative storyline scenarios are widely used to explore the possible future of hydrogen energy but each approach has shortcomings.<br/>This paper presents a hybrid approach to assessing hydrogen transitions in the UK by confronting qualitative socio-technical scenarios with quantitative energy systems modelling through a process of ‘dialogue’ between scenario and model. Three possible transition pathways are explored each exploring different uncertainties and possible decision points. Conclusions are drawn for both the future of hydrogen and on the value of an approach that brings quantitative formal models and narrative scenario techniques into dialogue.
The Pressure Peaking Phenomenon for Ignited Under-Expanded Hydrogen Jets in the Storage Enclosure: Experiments and Simulations for Release Rates of up to 11.5 g/s

This work focuses on the experimental and numerical investigation of maximum overpressure and pressure dynamics during ignited hydrogen releases in a storage enclosure e.g. in marine vessel or rail carriage with limited vent size area i.e. the pressure peaking phenomenon (PPP) revealed theoretically at Ulster University in 2010. The CFD model previously validated against small scale experiments in a 1 m3 enclosure is employed here to simulate real-scale tests performed by the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) in a chamber with a volume of 15 m3 . The numerical study compares two approaches on how to model the ignited hydrogen release conditions for under-expanded jets: (1) notional nozzle concept model with inflow boundary condition and (2) volumetric source model in the governing conservation equations. For the test with storage pressure of 11.78 MPa both approaches reproduce the experimental pressure dynamics and the pressure peak with a maximum 3% deviation. However the volumetric source approach reduces significantly the computational time by approximately 3 times (CFL = 0.75). The sensitivity analysis is performed to study the effect of CFL number the size of the volumetric source and number of iterations per time step. An approach based on the use of a larger size volumetric source and uniform coarser grid with a mesh size of a vent of square size is demonstrated to reduce the duration of simulations by a factor of 7.5 compared to the approach with inflow boundary at the notional nozzle exit. The volumetric source model demonstrates good engineering accuracy in predicting experimental pressure peaks with deviation from −14% to +11% for various release and ventilation scenarios as well as different volumetric source sizes. After validation against experiments the CFD model is employed to investigate the effect of cryogenic temperature in the storage on the overpressure dynamics in the enclosure. For a storage pressure equal to 11.78 MPa it is found that a decrease of storage temperature from 277 K to 100 K causes a twice larger pressure peak in the enclosure due to the pressure peaking phenomenon.
Life Cycle Assessment and Water Footprint of Hydrogen Production Methods: From Conventional to Emerging Technologies

A common sustainability issue arising in production systems is the efficient use of resources for providing goods or services. With the increased interest in a hydrogen (H2) economy the life-cycle environmental performance of H2 production has special significance for assisting in identifying opportunities to improve environmental performance and to guide challenging decisions and select between technology paths. Life cycle impact assessment methods are rapidly evolving to analyze multiple environmental impacts of the production of products or processes. This study marks the first step in developing process-based streamlined life cycle analysis (LCA) of several H2 production pathways combining life cycle impacts at the midpoint (17 problem-oriented) and endpoint (3 damage-oriented) levels using the state-of-the-art impact assessment method ReCiPe 2016. Steam reforming of natural gas coal gasification water electrolysis via proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM) solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) biomass gasification and reforming and dark fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass were analyzed. An innovative aspect is developed in this study is an analysis of water consumption associated with H2 production pathways by life-cycle stage to provide a better understanding of the life cycle water-related impacts on human health and natural environment. For water-related scope Water scarcity footprint (WSF) quantified using Available Water Remaining (AWARE) method was applied as a stand-alone indicator. The paper discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each production pathway identify the drivers of environmental impact quantify midpoint environmental impact and its influence on the endpoint environmental performance. The findings of this study could serve as a useful theoretical reference and practical basis to decision-makers of potential environmental impacts of H2 production systems.

Energy Saving Technologies and Mass-thermal Network Optimization for Decarbonized Iron and Steel Industry: A Review

The iron and steel industry relies significantly on primary energy and is one of the largest energy consumers in the manufacturing sector. Simultaneously numerous waste heat is lost and discharged directly into the environment in the process of steel production. Thus considering conservation of energy energy-efficient improvement should be a holistic target for iron and steel industry. The research gap is that almost all the review studies focus on the primary energy saving measures in iron and steel industry whereas few work summarize the secondary energy saving technologies together with former methods. The objective of this paper is to develop the concept of mass-thermal network optimization in iron and steel industry which unrolls a comprehensive map to consider current energy conservation technologies and low grade heat recovery technologies from an overall situation. By presenting an overarching energy consumption in the iron and steel industry energy saving potentials are presented to identify suitable technologies by using mass-thermal network optimization. Case studies and demonstration projects around the world are also summarized. The general guideline is figured out for the energy optimization in iron and steel industry while the improved mathematical models are regarded as the future challenge.
Incorporating Homeowners' Preferences of Heating Technologies in the UK TIMES Model

Hot water and space heating account for about 80% of total energy consumption in the residential sector in the UK. It is thus crucial to decarbonise residential heating to achieve UK's 2050 greenhouse gas reduction targets. However the decarbonisation transitions determined by most techno-economic energy system models might be too optimistic or misleading for relying on cost minimisation alone and not considering households' preferences for different heating technologies. This study thus proposes a novel framework to incorporate heterogeneous households' (HHs) preferences into the modelling process of the UK TIMES model. The incorporated preferences for HHs are based on a nationwide survey on homeowners' choices of heating technologies. Preference constraints are then applied to regulate the HHs' choices of heating technologies to reflect the survey results. Consequently compared to the least cost transition pathway the preference-driven pathway adopts heating technologies gradually without abrupt increases of market shares. Heat pumps and electric heaters are deployed much less than in the cost optimal result. Extensive district heating using low-carbon fuels and conservation measures should thus be deployed to provide flexibility for decarbonisation. The proposed framework can also incorporate preferences for other energy consumption technologies and be applied to other linear programming based energy system models.
Geological Hydrogen Storage: Geochemical Reactivity of Hydrogen with Sandstone Reservoirs

The geological storage of hydrogen is necessary to enable the successful transition to a hydrogen economy and achieve net-zero emissions targets. Comprehensive investigations must be undertaken for each storage site to ensure their long-term suitability and functionality. As such the systematic infrastructure and potential risks of large-scale hydrogen storage must be established. Herein we conducted over 250 batch reaction experiments with different types of reservoir sandstones under conditions representative of the subsurface reflecting expected time scales for geological hydrogen storage to investigate potential reactions involving hydrogen. Each hydrogen experiment was paired with a hydrogen-free control under otherwise identical conditions to ensure that any observed reactions were due to the presence of hydrogen. The results conclusively reveal that there is no risk of hydrogen loss or reservoir integrity degradation due to abiotic geochemical reactions in sandstone reservoirs.
Development of a Tangential Neutron Radiography System for Monitoring the Fatigue Cracks in Hydrogen Fuel Tanks

Purpose- To present an overview of the research and development carried out in a European funded framework 7 (FP7) project called SafeHPower for the implementation of neutron radiography to inspect fatigue cracks in vehicle and storage hydrogen fuel tanks. Project background– Hydrogen (H2) is the most promising replacement fuel for road transport due to its abundance efficiency low carbon footprint and the absence of harmful emissions. For the mass market of hydrogen to take off the safety issue surrounding the vehicle and storage hydrogen tanks needs to be addressed. The problem is the residual and additional stresses experienced by the tanks during the continuous cyclic loading between ambient and storage pressure which can result in the development of fatigue cracks. Steel tanks used as storage containers at service stations and depots and/or the composite tanks lined with steel are known to suffer from hydrogen embrittlement (HE). Another issue is the explosive nature of hydrogen (when it is present in the 18-59% range) where it is mixed with oxygen which can lead to catastrophic consequences including loss of life. Monitoring systems that currently exist in the market impose visual examination tests pressure tests and hydrostatic tests after the tank installation [1] [2]. Three inspection systems have been developed under this project to provide continuous monitoring solutions. Approach and scope- One of the inspection systems based on the neutron radiography (NR) technology that was developed in different phases with the application of varied strategies has been presented here. Monte Carlo (MCNP) simulation results to design and develop a bespoke collimator have been presented. A limitation of using an inertial electrostatic Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) pulsed neutron generator for fast neutron radiography has been discussed. Radiographs from the hydrogen tank samples obtained using thermal neutrons from a spallation neutron source at ISIS Rutherford laboratory UK have been presented. Furthermore radiograph obtained using thermal neutrons from a portable D-T neutron generator has been presented. In conclusion a proof in principle has been made to show that the defects in the hydrogen fuel tank can be detected using thermal neutron radiography.

Hydrogen has been identified as a fuel of choice for providing clean energy for transport and other applications across the world and the development of materials to store hydrogen efficiently and safely is crucial to this endeavour. Hydrogen has the largest scattering interaction with neutrons of all the elements in the periodic table making neutron scattering ideal for studying hydrogen storage materials. Simultaneous characterisation of the structure and dynamics of these materials during hydrogen uptake is straightforward using neutron scattering techniques. These studies will help us to understand the fundamental properties of hydrogen storage in realistic conditions and hence design new hydrogen storage materials.
Vision for a European Metrology Network for Energy Gases

As Europe moves towards decarbonising its energy infrastructure new measurement needs will arise that require collaborative efforts between European National Metrology Institutes and Designated Institutes to tackle. Such measurement needs include flow metering of hydrogen or hydrogen enriched natural gas in the gas grid for billing quality assurance of hydrogen at refuelling stations and equations of state for carbon dioxide in carbon capture and storage facilities. The European metrology network for energy gases for the first time provides a platform where metrology institutes can work together to develop a harmonised strategy prioritise new challenges and share expertise and capabilities to support the European energy gas industry to meet stringent EU targets for climate change and emissions reductions

Using hydrogen as an energy storage vector we estimate that 150 TWh of seasonal storage is required to replace seasonal variations in natural gas production. Large-scale storage is best suited to porous rock reservoirs. We present a method to quantify the hydrogen storage capacity of gas fields and saline aquifers using data previously used to assess CO2 storage potential. We calculate a P50 value of 6900 TWh of working gas capacity in gas fields and 2200 TWh in saline aquifers on the UK continental shelf assuming a cushion gas requirement of 50%. Sensitivity analysis reveals low temperature storage sites with sealing rocks that can withstand high pressures are ideal sites. Gas fields in the Southern North Sea could utilise existing infrastructure and large offshore wind developments to develop large-scale offshore hydrogen production.
An Investigation into the Change Leakage when Switching from Natural Gas to Hydrogen in the UK Gas Distribution Network

The H21 National Innovation Competition project is examining the feasibility of repurposing the existing GB natural gas distribution network for transporting 100% hydrogen. It aims to undertake an experimental testing programme that will provide the necessary data to quantify the comparative risk between a 100% hydrogen network and the natural gas network. The first phase of the project focuses on leakage testing of a strategic set of assets that have been removed from service which provide a representative sample of assets across the network. This paper presents the work undertaken for Phase 1A (background testing) where HSE and industry partners have tested a range of natural gas pipework assets of varying size material age and pressure-rating in a new bespoke open-air testing facility at the HSE Science and Research Centre Buxton. The assets have been pressurised with hydrogen and then methane and the leakage rate from the assets measured in both cases. The main finding of this work is that the assets tested which leak hydrogen also leak methane. None of the assets were found to leak hydrogen but not methane. In addition repair techniques that were effective at stopping methane leaks were also effective at stopping hydrogen leaks. The data from the experiments have been interpreted to obtain a range of leakage ratios between the two gases for releases under different conditions. This has been compared to the predicted ratio of hydrogen to methane volumetric leak rates for laminar (1.2:1) and turbulent (2.9:1) releases and good agreement was observed.
Renewable Hydrogen Economy Outlook in Africa

Hydrogen presents an opportunity for Africa to not only decarbonise its own energy use and enable clean energy access for all but also to export renewable energy. This paper developed a framework for assessing renewable resources for hydrogen production and provides a new critical analysis as to how and what role hydrogen can play in the complex African energy landscape. The regional solar wind CSP and bio hydrogen potential ranges from 366 to 1311 Gt/year 162 to 1782 Gt/year 463 to 2738 Gt/year and 0.03 to 0.06 Gt/year respectively. The water availability and sensitivity results showed that the water shortages in some countries can be abated by importing water from regions with high renewable water resources. A techno-economic comparative analysis indicated that a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system presents the most cost-effective transportation system with overall costs per kg hydrogen of 0.038 $/kg followed by water pipeline with 0.084 $/kg seawater desalination 0.1 $/kg liquified hydrogen tank truck 0.12 $/kg compressed hydrogen pipeline 0.16 $/kg liquefied ammonia pipeline 0.38 $/kg liquefied ammonia tank truck 0.60 $/kg and compressed hydrogen tank truck with 0.77 $/kg. The results quantified the significance of economies of scale due to cost effectiveness of systems such as compressed hydrogen pipeline and liquefied hydrogen tank truck systems when hydrogen production is scaled up. Decentralization is favorable under some constraints e.g. compressed hydrogen and liquefied ammonia tank truck systems will be more cost effective below 800 km and 1400 km due to lower investment and operation costs.
Agreement for the Low Carbon Hydrogen Production Business Model

The Heads of Terms for the Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement sets out the government’s proposal for the final hydrogen production business model design. It will form the basis of the Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement the business model contract between the government appointed counterparty and a low carbon hydrogen producer.<br/>The business model will provide revenue support to hydrogen producers to overcome the operating cost gap between low carbon hydrogen and high carbon fuels. It has been designed to incentivise investment in low carbon hydrogen production and use and in doing so deliver the government’s ambition of up to 10GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.
US-UK Scientific Forum on Sustainable Energy: Electrical Storage in Support of the Grid, Forum Report

The effort to meet the ambitious targets of the Paris agreement is challenging many governments. The US and UK governments might have different approaches to achieving the targets but both will rely heavily on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to power their economies. However these sources of power are unpredictable and ways will have to be developed to store renewable energy for hours days weeks seasons and maybe even years before it is used. As the disruptive and increasingly deadly impacts of climate change are being felt across the world the need to move to more sustainable sources of energy and to identify viable ways to store that energy has never been more important.<br/>This was the subject of the US–UK Science Forum on electrical storage in support of the grid which was held online from 17 – 18 March 2021. Co-organised by the Royal Society and the National Academy of Sciences it brought together a diverse group of 60 scientists policy makers industry leaders regulators and other key stakeholders for a wide-ranging discussion on all aspects of energy storage from the latest research in the field to the current status of deployment. It also considered the current national and international economic and policy contexts in which these developments are taking place. A number of key points emerged from the discussion. First it is clear that renewable energy will play an increasingly important role in the US and UK energy systems of the future and energy storage at a multi-terawatt hour scale has a vital role to play. Of course this will evolve differently to some extent in both countries and elsewhere according to the various geographical technological economic political social and regulatory environments. Second international collaboration is critical – no single nation will solve this problem alone. As two of the world’s leading scientific nations largest economies and per capita CO2 emitters with a long track record of collaboration the US and UK are well placed to play a vital role in addressing this critical challenge. As the discussion highlighted a wide range of energy storage technologies are now emerging and becoming increasingly available many of which have the potential to be critical components of a future net-zero energy system. A crucial next phase is in ensuring that these are technically developed as well as economically and political viable. This will require the support of a wide range of these potential solutions to ensure that their benefits remain widely available and to avoid costly ‘lock-in’. Scientists and science academies have a critical role to play in analysing technology options their combinations and their potential roles in future sustainable energy systems and in working with policymakers to incentivise investment and deployment.
On the Cost of Zero Carbon Hydrogen: A Techno-economic Analysis of Steam Methane Reforming with Carbon Capture and Storage

This article challenges the view that zero carbon hydrogen from steam methane reforming (SMR) is prohibitively expensive and that the cost of CO2 capture increases exponentially as residual emissions approach zero; a flawed narrative often eliminating SMR produced hydrogen as a route to net zero. We show that the capture and geological storage of 100% of the fossil CO2 produced in a SMR is achievable with commercially available post-combustion capture technology and an open art solvent. The Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) of 69£/MWhth HHV (2.7£/kg) for UK production remains competitive to other forms of low carbon hydrogen but retains a hydrogen lifecycle carbon intensity of 5 gCO2e/MJ (LHV) due to natural gas supply chain and embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Compensating for the remaining lifecycle GHG emissions via Direct Air Capture with geological CO2 Storage (DACCS) increases the LCOH to 71–86 £/MWhth HHV (+3–25%) for a cost estimate of 100–1000 £/tCO2 for DACCS and the 2022 UK natural gas supply chain methane emission rates. Finally we put in perspective the cost of CO2 avoidance of fuel switching from natural gas to hydrogen with long term price estimates for natural gas use and DACCS and hydrogen produced from electrolysis.
Combined Effects of Stress and Temperature on Hydrogen Diffusion in Non-hydride Forming Alloys Applied in Gas Turbines

Hydrogen plays a vital role in the utilisation of renewable energy but ingress and diffusion of hydrogen in a gas turbine can induce hydrogen embrittlement on its metallic components. This paper aims to investigate the hydrogen transport in a non-hydride forming alloy such as Alloy 690 used in gas turbines inspired by service conditions of turbine blades i.e. under the combined effects of stress and temperature. An appropriate hydrogen transport equation is formulated accounting for both stress and temperature distributions of the domain in the non-hydride forming alloy. Finite element (FE) analyses are performed to predict steady-state hydrogen distribution in lattice sites and dislocation traps of a double notched specimen under constant tensile load and various temperature fields. Results demonstrate that the lattice hydrogen concentration is very sensitive to the temperature gradients whilst the stress concentration only slightly increases local lattice hydrogen concentration. The combined effects of stress and temperature result in the highest concentration of the dislocation trapped hydrogen in low-temperature regions although the plastic strain is only at a moderate level. Our results suggest that temperature gradients and stress concentrations in turbine blades due to cooling channels and holes make the relatively low-temperature regions susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement.
Impact of Hydrogen Liquefaction on Hydrogen Fuel Quality for Transport Applications (ISO-14687:2019)

Decarbonisation of the energy sector is becoming increasingly more important to the reduction in climate change. Renewable energy is an effective means of reducing CO2 emissions but the fluctuation in demand and production of energy is a limiting factor. Liquid hydrogen allows for long-term storage of energy. Hydrogen quality is important for the safety and efficiency of the end user. Furthermore the quality of the hydrogen gas after liquefaction has not yet been reported. The purity of hydrogen after liquefaction was assessed against the specification of Hydrogen grade D in the ISO-14687:2019 by analysing samples taken at different locations throughout production. Sampling was carried out directly in gas cylinders and purity was assessed using multiple analytical methods. The results indicate that the hydrogen gas produced from liquefaction is of a higher purity than the starting gas with all impurities below the threshold values set in ISO-14687:2019. The amount fraction of water measured in the hydrogen sample increased with repeated sampling from the liquid hydrogen tank suggesting that the sampling system used was affected by low temperatures (−253 ◦C). These data demonstrate for the first time the impact of liquefaction on hydrogen purity assessed against ISO-14687:2019 showing that liquified hydrogen is a viable option for long-term energy storage whilst also improving quality.
Feasibility Study of Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption for CO2 Capture From an SMR Hydrogen Plant: Comparison Between Synthesis Gas Capture and Tail Gas Capture

In this paper a feasibility study was carried out to evaluate cyclic adsorption processes for capturing CO2 from either shifted synthesis gas or H2 PSA tail gas of an industrial-scale SMR-based hydrogen plant. It is expected that hydrogen is to be widely used in place of natural gas in various industrial sectors where electrification would be rather challenging. A SMR-based hydrogen plant is currently dominant in the market as it can produce hydrogen at scale in the most economical way. Its CO2 emission must be curtailed significantly by its integration with CCUS. Two Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) systems including a rinse step were designed to capture CO2 from an industrial-scale SMR-based hydrogen plant: one for the shifted synthesis gas and the other for the H2 PSA tail gas. Given the shapes of adsorption isotherms zeolite 13X and activated carbon were selected for tail gas and syngas capture options respectively. A simple Equilibrium Theory model developed for the limiting case of complete regeneration was taken to analyse the VPSA systems in this feasibility study. The process performances were compared to each other with respect to product recovery bed productivity and power consumption. It was found that CO2 could be captured more cost-effectively from the syngas than the tail gas unless the desorption pressure was too low. The energy consumption of the VPSA was comparable to those of the conventional MDEA processes.
Hydrogen-Enriched Compressed Natural Gas Network Simulation for Consuming Green Hydrogen Considering the Hydrogen Diffusion Process

Transporting green hydrogen by existing natural gas networks has become a practical means to accommodate curtailed wind and solar power. Restricted by pipe materials and pressure levels there is an upper limit on the hydrogen blending ratio of hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) that can be transported by natural gas pipelines which affects whether the natural gas network can supply energy safely and reliably. To this end this paper investigates the effects of the intermittent and fluctuating green hydrogen produced by different types of renewable energy on the dynamic distribution of hydrogen concentration after it is blended into natural gas pipelines. Based on the isothermal steady-state simulation results of the natural gas network two convection–diffusion models for the dynamic simulation of hydrogen injections are proposed. Finally the dynamic changes of hydrogen concentration in the pipelines under scenarios of multiple green hydrogen types and multiple injection nodes are simulated on a seven-node natural gas network. The simulation results indicate that compared with the solar-power-dominated hydrogen productionblending scenario the hydrogen concentrations in the natural gas pipelines are more uniformly distributed in the wind-power-dominated scenario and the solar–wind power balance scenario. To be specific in the solar-power-dominated scenario the hydrogen concentration exceeds the limit for more time whilst the overall hydrogen production is low and the local hydrogen concentration in the natural gas network exceeds the limit for nearly 50% of the time in a day. By comparison in the wind-power-dominated scenario all pipelines can work under safe conditions. The hydrogen concentration overrun time in the solar–wind power balance scenario is also improved compared with the solar-power-dominated scenario and the limit-exceeding time of the hydrogen concentration in Pipe 5 and Pipe 6 is reduced to 91.24% and 91.99% of the solar-power-dominated scenario. This work can help verify the day-ahead scheduling strategy of the electricity-HCNG integrated energy system (IES) and provide a reference for the design of local hydrogen production-blending systems.
Reducing the Cost of Low-carbon Hydrogen Production via Emerging Chemical Looping Process

A thorough techno-economic analysis where inherent carbon capture is examined against state-of-the-art blue hydrogen production configurations for large (100000 Nm3 /h) and very large (333000 Nm3 /h) capacities. Advanced solvent-based technologies based on post-combustion capture and auto-thermal reformer combined with a gas heated reformer are simulated with process flowsheet software and compared with the emerging chemical looping process. A network of dynamically operated packed bed reactors has been designed and modelled using an in-house code and key parameters generating uncertainties in the results have been examined in a sensitivity analysis. The chemical looping reforming process presents a higher net reforming efficiency than the benchmark cases (8.2 % higher at large scale and 1.5 % higher at very large scale) ranged 75.4–75.7 % while the specific energy for CO2 avoidance is negative in the range of − 0.78 to − 0.85 MJ/kgCO2. In the carbon capture cases the chemical looping reforming in packed beds technology generated a levelised cost of hydrogen of 168.9 £/kNm3 H2 for the large scale and 159.1 £/kNm3 H2 for the very large scale with the values for the benchmark cases being higher at 196.4 and 166.6 £/kNm3 H2 respectively while the levelised cost of hydrogen values are 1 % higher in the benchmark cases where carbon emission price is accounted for. The carbon capture ratio is 99.9 % for the chemical looping reforming cases compared to 90–91 % for the benchmark ones thus providing a significant foreground for the scale-up and implementation of chemical looping reforming technologies for hydrogen production.
Inspection of Coated Hydrogen Transportation Pipelines

The growing need for hydrogen indicates that there is likely to be a demand for transporting hydrogen. Hydrogen pipelines are an economical option but the issue of hydrogen damage to pipeline steels needs to be studied and investigated. So far limited research has been dedicated to determining how the choice of inspection method for pipeline integrity management changes depending on the presence of a coating. Thus this review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of inspection methods specifically for detecting the defects formed uniquely in coated hydrogen pipelines. The discussion will begin with a background of hydrogen pipelines and the common defects seen in these pipelines. This will also include topics such as blended hydrogen-natural gas pipelines. After which the focus will shift to pipeline integrity management methods and the effectiveness of current inspection methods in the context of standards such as ASME B31.12 and BS 7910. The discussion will conclude with a summary of newly available inspection methods and future research directions.
Stochastic Low-order Modelling of Hydrogen Autoignition in a Turbulent Non-premixed Flow

Autoignition risk in initially non-premixed flowing systems such as premixing ducts must be assessed to help the development of low-NOx systems and hydrogen combustors. Such situations may involve randomly fluctuating inlet conditions that are challenging to model in conventional mixture-fraction-based approaches. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based surrogate modelling strategy is presented here for fast and accurate predictions of the stochastic autoignition behaviour of a hydrogen flow in a hot air turbulent co-flow. The variability of three input parameters i.e. inlet fuel and air temperatures and average wall temperature is first sampled via a space-filling design. For each sampled set of conditions the CFD modelling of the flame is performed via the Incompletely Stirred Reactor Network (ISRN) approach which solves the reacting flow governing equations in post-processing on top of a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of the inert hydrogen plume. An accurate surrogate model namely a Gaussian Process is then trained on the ISRN simulations of the burner and the final quantification of the variability of autoignition locations is achieved by querying the surrogate model via Monte Carlo sampling of the random input quantities. The results are in agreement with the observed statistics of the autoignition locations. The methodology adopted in this work can be used effectively to quantify the impact of fluctuations and assist the design of practical combustion systems. © 2022 The Authors. Techno-economic Study of a 100-MW-class Multi-energy Vehicle Charging/Refueling Station: Using 100% Renewable, Liquid Hydrogen, and Superconductor Technologies

Renewable energies such as the wind energy and solar energy generate low-carbon electricity which can directly charge battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Meanwhile the surplus electricity can be used to produce the “green hydrogen” which provides zero-emission hydrogen fuels to those fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In order to charge/refuel multi-energy vehicles we propose a novel scheme of hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply using cryogenic and superconducting technologies. In this scheme the green hydrogen is further liquefied into the high-density and low-pressure liquid hydrogen (LH2) for bulk energy storage and transmission. Taking the advantage of the cryogenic environment of LH2 (20 K) it can also be used as the cryogen to cool down super conducting cables to realize the virtually zero-loss power transmission from 100 % renewable sources to vehicle charging stations. This hybrid LH2/electricity energy pipeline can realize long-distance large-capacity and high efficiency clean energy transmission to fulfil the hybrid energy supply demand for BEVs and FCEVs. For the case of a 100 MW-class hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply station the system principle and energy management strategy are analyzed through 9 different operating sub-modes. The corresponding static and dynamic economic modeling are performed and the economic feasibility of the hybrid hydrogen/electricity supply is verified using life-cycle analysis. Taking an example of wind power capacity 1898 MWh and solar power capacity 1619 MWh per day the dynamic payback period is 15.06 years the profitability index is 1.17 the internal rate of return is 7.956 % and the accumulative NPV is 187.92 M$. The system design and techno-economic analysis can potentially offer a technically/economically superior solution for future multi-energy vehicle charging/refueling systems.
Combustion Characterization of Hybrid Methane-hydrogen Gas in Domestic Swirl Stoves

Combustion of hybrid natural gas (methane) and hydrogen mixture in domestic swirl stoves has been characterized using hot-state experiments and numerical analysis. The detailed combustion mechanism of methane and hydrogen (GRI-Mech 3.0) has been simplified to obtain reduced number of chemical reactions involved (82 % reduction). The novel simplified combustion mechanism developed has been used to obtain combustion characteristics of hybrid methane-hydrogen mixture. The difference between the calculations from the detailed and the simplified mechanisms has been found to be Combustion of hybrid natural gas (methane) and hydrogen mixture in domestic swirl stoves has been characterized using hot-state experiments and numerical analysis. The results depict that the maximum difference in combustion zone’s average temperature is <13 %. The investigations have then been extended to hybrid methane-hydrogen mixtures with varying volume fraction of hydrogen. The results show that for a mixture containing 15 % hydrogen the release of CO due to combustion reduces by 25 % while the combustion zone’s average temperature reduces by 6.7 %. The numerical results and hot-state tests both confirm that the temperature remains stable when hybrid methane-hydrogen mixture is used in domestic swirl gas stoves demonstrating its effectiveness in cooking processes.
First Hydrogen Fuel Sampling from a Fuel Cell Hydrogen Electrical Vehicle–Validation of Hydrogen Fuel Sampling System to Investigate FCEV Performance

Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) are developing quickly from passenger vehicles to trucks or fork-lifts. Policymakers are supporting an ambitious strategy to deploy fuel cell electrical vehicles with infrastructure as hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) as the European Green deal for Europe. The hydrogen fuel quality according to international standard as ISO 14687 is critical to ensure the FCEV performance and that poor hydrogen quality may not cause FCEV loss of performance. However the sampling system is only available for nozzle sampling at HRS. If a FCEV may show a lack of performance there is currently no methodology to sample hydrogen fuel from a FCEV itself. It would support the investigation to determine if hydrogen fuel may have caused any performance loss. This article presents the first FCEV sampling system and its comparison with the hydrogen fuel sampling from the HRS nozzle (as requested by international standard ISO 14687). The results showed good agreement with the hydrogen fuel sample. The results demonstrate that the prototype developed provides representative samples from the FCEV and can be an alternative to determine hydrogen fuel quality. The prototype will require improvements and a larger sampling campaign.
Metal-Hydride-Based Hydrogen Storage as Potential Heat Source for the Cold Start of PEM FC in Hydrogen-Powered Coaches: A Comparative Study of Various Materials and Thermal Management Techniques

The successful and fast start-up of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) at subfreezing temperatures (cold start) is very important for the use of PEMFCs as energy sources for automotive applications. The effective thermal management of PEMFCs is of major importance. When hydrogen is stored in hydride-forming intermetallics significant amounts of heat are released due to the exothermic nature of the reaction. This excess of heat can potentially be used for PEMFC thermal management and to accelerate the cold start. In the current work this possibility is extensively studied. Three hydride-forming intermetallics are introduced and their hydrogenation behavior is evaluated. In addition five thermal management scenarios of the metal hydride beds are studied in order to enhance the kinetics of the hydrogenation. The optimum combination of the intermetallic hydrogenation behavior weight and complexity of the thermal management system was chosen for the study of thermal coupling with the PEMFCs. A 1D GT-SUITE model was built to stimulate the thermal coupling of a 100 kW fuel cell stack with the metal hydride. The results show that the use of the heat from the metal hydride system was able to reduce the cold start by up to 8.2%.
Effect of State of Charge on Type IV Hydrogen Storage Tank Rupture in a Fire

The use of hydrogen storage tanks at 100% of nominal working pressure NWP is expected only after refuelling. Driving between refuellings is characterised by the state of charge SoC<100%. There is experimental evidence that Type IV tanks tested in a fire at initial pressures below one-third of its NWP depending on a fire source were leaking without rupture. This paper aims at understanding this phenomenon and the development of a predictive model. The numerical research has demonstrated that the heat transfer from fire through the composite overwrap is sufficient to melt the polymer liner. This initiates hydrogen microleaks through the composite wall before it loses the load-bearing ability when the resin degrades deep enough to cause the tank to rupture. The dependence of tank fire-resistance rating (FRR) on the SoC is presented for tanks of volume in the range 36-244 L. The tank wall thickness non-uniformity i.e. thinner composite at the dome area is identified as a serious issue for tank’s fire resistance that must be addressed by tank manufacturers and OEMs. The effect of the burst pressure ratio on FRR is investigated. It is concluded that thermal parameters of the composite wall i.e. decomposition heat and temperatures play a vital role in simulations of tank failure and thus FRR.
Regional Uptake of Direct Reduction Iron Production Using Hydrogen Under Climate Policy

The need to reduce CO2 emissions to zero by 2050 has meant an increasing focus on high emitting industrial sectors such as steel. However significant uncertainties remain as to the rate of technology diffusion across steel production pathways in different regions and how this might impact on climate ambition. Informed by empirical analysis of historical transitions this paper presents modelling on the regional deployment of Direction Reduction Iron using hydrogen (DRI-H2). We find that DRI-H2 can play a leading role in the decarbonisation of the sector leading to near-zero emissions by 2070. Regional spillovers from early to late adopting regions can speed up the rate of deployment of DRI-H2 leading to lower cumulative emissions and system costs. Without such effects cumulative emissions are 13% higher than if spillovers are assumed and approximately 15% and 20% higher in China and India respectively. Given the estimates of DRI-H2 cost-effectiveness relative to other primary production technologies we also find that costs increase in the absence of regional spillovers. However other factors can also have impacts on deployment emission reductions and costs including the composition of the early adopter group material efficiency improvements and scrap recycling rates. For the sector to achieve decarbonisation key regions will need to continue to invest in low carbon steel projects recognising their broader global benefit and look to develop and strengthen policy coordination on technologies such as DRI-H2.
Techno-Economic Analysis of Low Carbon Hydrogen Production from Offshore Wind Using Battolyser Technology

A battolyser is a combined battery electrolyser in one unit. It is based on flow battery technology and can be adapted to produce hydrogen at a lower efficiency than an electrolyser but without the need for rare and expensive materials. This paper presents a method of determining if a battolyser connected to a wind farm makes economic sense based on stochastic modelling. A range of cost data and operational scenarios are used to establish the impact on the NPV and LCOE of adding a battolyser to a wind farm. The results are compared to adding a battery or an electrolyser to a wind farm. Indications are that it makes economic sense to add a battolyser or battery to a wind farm to use any curtailed wind with calculated LCOE at £56/MWh to £58/MWh and positive NPV over a range of cost scenarios. However electrolysers are still too expensive to make economic sense.
Enhanced Performance and Durability of Low Catalyst Loading PEM Water Electrolyser Based on a Short-side Chain Perfluorosulfonic Ionomer

Water electrolysis supplied by renewable energy is the foremost technology for producing ‘‘green” hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. In addition the ability to rapidly follow an intermittent load makes electrolysis an ideal solution for grid-balancing caused by differences in supply and demand for energy generation and consumption. Membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) designed for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis based on a novel short-side chain (SSC) perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane Aquivion with various cathode and anode noble metal loadings were investigated in terms of both performance and durability. Utilizing a nanosized Ir0.7Ru0.3O solid solution anode catalyst and a supported Pt/C cathode catalyst in combination with the Aquivion membrane gave excellent electrolysis performances exceeding 3.2 A cm-2 at 1.8 V terminal cell voltage ( 80% efficiency) at 90 ºC in the presence of a total catalyst loading of 1.6 mg cm−2. A very small loss of efficiency corresponding to 30 mV voltage increase was recorded at 3 A cm 2 using a total noble metal catalyst loading of less than 0.5 mg cm−2 (compared to the industry standard of 2 mg cm−2). Steady-state durability tests carried out for 1000 h at 1 A cm -2 showed excellent stability for the MEA with total noble metal catalyst loading of 1.6 mg cm−2 (cell voltage increase 5 lV/h). Moderate degradation rate (cell voltage increase 15 lV/h) was recorded for the low loading 0.5 mg cm-2 MEA. Similar stability characteristics were observed in durability tests at 3 A cm−2. The Effect of a Nuclear Baseload in a Zero-carbon Electricity System: An Analysis for the UK

This paper explores the effect of having a nuclear baseload in a 100% carbon-free electricity system The study analyses numerous 8 scenarios based on different penetrations of conventional nuclear wind and solar PV power different levels of overgeneration 9 and different combinations between medium and long duration energy stores (hydrogen and compressed air respectively) to 10 determine the configuration that achieves the lowest total cost of electricity (TCoE). 11 At their current cost new baseload nuclear power plants are too expensive. Results indicate the TCoE is minimised when demand 12 is supplied entirely by renewables with no contribution from conventional nuclear. 13 However small modular reactors may achieve costs of ~£60/MWh (1.5x current wind cost) in the future. With such costs 14 supplying ~80% of the country’s electricity demand with nuclear power could minimise the TCoE. In this scenario wind provides 15 the remaining 20% plus a small percentage of overgeneration (~2.5%). Hydrogen in underground caverns provides ~30.5 TWh (81 16 days) of long-duration energy storage while CAES systems provide 2.8 TWh (~8 days) of medium-duration storage. This 17 configuration achieves costs of ~65.8 £/MWh. Batteries (required for short duration imbalances) are not included in the figure. 18 The TCoE achieved will be higher once short duration storage is accounted for.
Industrial Energy Use and Carbon Emissions Reduction in the Chemicals Sector: A UK Perspective

The opportunities and challenges to reducing industrial energy demand and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) emissions in the Chemicals sector are evaluated with a focus on the situation in the United Kingdom (UK) although the lessons learned are applicable across much of the industrialised world. This sector can be characterised as being heterogeneous; embracing a diverse range of products (including advanced materials cleaning fluids composites dyes paints pharmaceuticals plastics and surfactants). It sits on the boundary between energy-intensive (EI) and non-energy-intensive (NEI) industrial sectors. The improvement potential of various technological interventions has been identified in terms of their energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Currently-available best practice technologies (BPTs) will lead to further short-term energy and CO2 emissions savings in chemicals processing but the prospects for the commercial exploitation of innovative technologies by mid-21st century are far more speculative. A set of industrial decarbonisation ‘technology roadmaps’ out to the mid-21st Century are also reported based on various alternative scenarios. These yield low-carbon transition pathways that represent future projections which match short-term and long-term (2050) targets with specific technological solutions to help meet the key energy saving and decarbonisation goals. The roadmaps’ contents were built up on the basis of the improvement potentials associated with various processes employed in the chemicals industry. They help identify the steps needed to be undertaken by developers policy makers and other stakeholders in order to ensure the decarbonisation of the UK chemicals industry. The attainment of significant falls in carbon emissions over this period will depends critically on the adoption of a small number of key technologies [e.g. carbon capture and storage (CCS) energy efficiency techniques and bioenergy] alongside a decarbonisation of the electricity supply.
The Use of Hydrogen to Separate and Recycle Neodymium–iron–boron-type Magnets from Electronic Waste

The rare earth metals have been identified by the European Union and the United States as being at greatest supply risk of all the materials for clean energy technologies. Of particular concern are neodymium and dysprosium both of which are employed in neodymium–iron–boron based magnets. Recycling of magnets based on these materials and contained within obsolete electronic equipment could provide an additional and secure supply. In the present work hydrogen has been employed as a processing agent to decrepitate sintered neodymium–iron–boron based magnets contained within hard disk drives into a demagnetised hydrogenated powder. This powder was then extracted mechanically from the devices with an extraction efficiency of 90 ± 5% and processed further using a combination of sieves and ball bearings to produce a powder containing <330 parts per million of nickel contamination. It is then possible for the extracted powder to be re-processed in a number of ways namely directly by blending and re-sintering to form fully dense magnets by Hydrogenation Disproportionation Desorption Recombination processing to produce an anisotropic coercive powder suitable for bonded magnets by re-melting; or by chemical extraction of the rare earth elements from the alloy. For example it was shown that by the re-sintering route it was possible to recover >90% of the magnetic properties of the starting material with significantly less energy than that employed in primary magnet production. The particular route used will depend upon the magnetic properties required the level of contamination of the extracted material and the compositional variation of the feedstock. The various possibilities have been summarised in a flow diagram.
Between Hope And Hype: A Hydrogen Vision For The UK

There is a growing conversation around the role that hydrogen can play in the future of the UK and how to best harness its potential to secure jobs show climate leadership promote industrial competitiveness and drive innovation. The Government’s ‘Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution’ included hydrogen as one of its ten actions targeting 5GW of ‘low carbon’ hydrogen production by 2030. Britain is thus joining the EU US Japan Germany and a host of other countries seeking to be part of the hydrogen economy of the future.<br/><br/>A focus on clean green hydrogen within targeted sectors and hubs can support multiple Government goals – including demonstrating climate leadership reducing regional inequalities through the ‘levelling up’ agenda and ensuring a green and cost-effective recovery from the coronavirus pandemic which prioritises jobs and skills. A strategic hydrogen vision must be honest and recognise where green hydrogen does not present the optimal pathway for decarbonisation – for instance where alternative solutions are already readily available for roll-out are more efficient and cost-effective. A clear example is hydrogen use for heating where it is estimated to require around 30 times more offshore wind farm capacity than currently available to produce enough green hydrogen to replace all gas boilers as well as adding costs for consumers.<br/><br/>This paper considers the offer of hydrogen for key Government priorities – including an inclusive and resilient economic recovery from the pandemic demonstrating climate leadership and delivering for all of society across the UK. It assesses existing evidence and considers the risks and opportunities and how they might inform a strategic vision for the UK. Ahead of the forthcoming Hydrogen Strategy it sets expectations for Government and outlines key recommendations.
Progress and Challenges on the Thermal Management of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Technologies: Fuel Cells, Electrolysers, and Supercapacitors

It is now well established that electrochemical systems can optimally perform only within a narrow range of temperature. Exposure to temperatures outside this range adversely affects the performance and lifetime of these systems. As a result thermal management is an essential consideration during the design and operation of electrochemical equipment and can heavily influence the success of electrochemical energy technologies. Recently significant attempts have been placed on the maturity of cooling technologies for electrochemical devices. Nonetheless the existing reviews on the subject have been primarily focused on battery cooling. Conversely heat transfer in other electrochemical systems commonly used for energy conversion and storage has not been subjected to critical reviews. To address this issue the current study gives an overview of the progress and challenges on the thermal management of different electrochemical energy devices including fuel cells electrolysers and supercapacitors. The physicochemical mechanisms of heat generation in these electrochemical devices are discussed in-depth. Physics of the heat transfer techniques currently employed for temperature control are then exposed and some directions for future studies are provided.

How to Decarbonise the UKs Freight Sector by 2050

To achieve the UK’s net zero target vehicles including heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) will need to be entirely decarbonised. The UK government has announced that it plans to phase out the sale of all new cars and vans with engines between 2030 and 2035. It has also announced its intention to consult on a similar phase-out for diesel-powered heavy-goods vehicles (HGVs). This study analyses policies and technologies which can contribute to the decarbonisation of the UK's inland freight sector.
It comprises an emissions modelling exercise and a cost analysis for total cost of ownership (TCO) of long-haul trucks. The study shows that for urban and regional deliveries battery electric trucks offer the best option to decarbonise. It also shows that battery electric trucks and those using an overhead catenary infrastructure are likely to be the most cost-effective pathway to decarbonise long-haul trucks by 2050 but that renewable hydrogen could also be an option.

Cold Hydrogen Blowdown Release: An Inter-comparison Study

Hydrogen dispersion in stagnant environment resulting from blowdown of a vessel storing the gas at cryogenic temperature is simulated using different CFD codes and modelling strategies. The simulations are based on the DISCHA experiments that were carried out by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Pro-Science (PS). The selected test for the current study involves hydrogen release from a 2.815 dm3 volume tank with an initial pressure of 200 barg and temperature 80 K. During the release the hydrogen pressure in the tank gradually decreased. A total of about 139 gr hydrogen is released through a 4 mm diameter. The temperature time series and the temperature decay rate of the minimum value predicted by the different codes are compared with each other and with the experimentally measured ones. Recommendations for future experimental setup and for modeling approaches for similar releases are provided based on the present analysis. The work is carried out within the EU-funded project PRESLHY.
Are Scenarios of Hydrogen Vehicle Adoption Optimistic? A Comparison with Historical Analogies

There is a large literature exploring possible hydrogen futures using various modelling and scenario approaches. This paper compares the rates of transition depicted in that literature with a set of historical analogies. These analogies are cases in which alternative-fuelled vehicles have penetrated vehicle markets. The paper suggests that the literature has tended to be optimistic about the possible rate at which hydrogen vehicles might replace oil-based transportation. The paper compares 11 historical adoptions of alternative fuel vehicles with 24 scenarios from 20 studies that depict possible hydrogen futures. All but one of the hydrogen scenarios show vehicle adoption faster than has occurred for hybrid electric vehicles in Japan the most successful market for hybrids. Several scenarios depict hydrogen transitions occurring at a rate faster than has occurred in any of the historic examples. The paper concludes that scenarios of alternative vehicle adoption should include more pessimistic scenarios alongside optimistic ones.
Hydrogen Blending and the Gas Commercial Framework - Report on Conclusions of NIA study

Blending hydrogen into the gas grid could be an important stepping stone during the transition to a sustainable net zero system. In particular it may: provide a significant and reliable source of demand for hydrogen producers supporting the investment case for hydrogen; provide learnings and incremental change towards what could potentially become a 100% hydrogen grid; and immediately decarbonise a portion of the gas flowing through the grid. Technical questions relating to hydrogen blending are being taken forward by the industry (e.g. through the HyDeploy project in relation to the maximum potential blend of hydrogen that can be accommodated without end user appliances needing to be altered or replaced). But if blending is to take place changes to commercial arrangements will be necessary as today these assume a relatively uniform gas quality. In particular the commercial framework will need to ensure that limits on the percentage of hydrogen that can safely be blended (currently expected to be around 20% by volume) are not exceeded. We have been commissioned by Cadent to undertake a Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) project to identify the changes required to the gas commercial framework that will enable hydrogen blending in the GB gas grid and to set out a roadmap for how these can be delivered. This report sets out our recommendations.
HyDeploy2: Network Information and Maps

Winlaton site was chosen as the site for the HyDeploy 2 North East trial as it was seen as the site that offered a high degree of variability with regards materials on the network size of network and statistical representation of housing. The Winlaton trial network is an estate of the wider Winlaton gas network situated in Blaydon near Gateshead. The Winlaton trial network has been isolated from the wider Winlaton gas network where it was previously supplied from and will be supplied with the blended gas from NGN’s Low Thornley gas depot with the installation of a brand-new pressure regulating district governor.<br/>The data contained within this report outlines the expected seasonal gas demand on the Winlaton trial network and the associated leakage and repair history for the network. No unusual repairs or leakage behaviour has been observed on this network. A DSEAR assessment has been conducted on the governor station ensuring ATEX compliance. The network isolation and reinforcement requirements are also given in this report highlighting the necessary actions to isolate the trial network from the wider Winlaton gas network. The NGN Safety Case outlines the risks associated with the operation of a gas grid and the ALARP mitigations developed to minimise them and what response is necessary in case such risks are realised. The existing safety case will be amended to account for the infrastructural operational and commercial changes associated with the HyDeploy 2 project. The report also contains a detailed register of all the assets on the Winlaton trial network this data set was used to inform the scientific research programme and specifically to allow an assessment to be carried out with regards to the operability of the existing and newly installed assets on the Winlaton trial network with respect to the blended gas.<br/>Click on supplement tab to view the other documents from this report
The Implications of Ambitious Decarbonisation of Heat and Road Transport for Britain’s Net Zero Carbon Energy Systems

Decarbonisation of heating and road transport are regarded as necessary but very challenging steps on the pathway to net zero carbon emissions. Assessing the most efficient routes to decarbonise these sectors requires an integrated view of energy and road transport systems. Here we describe how a national gas and electricity transmission network model was extended to represent multiple local energy systems and coupled with a national energy demand and road transport model. The integrated models were applied to assess a range of technologies and policies for heating and transport where the UK’s 2050 net zero carbon emissions target is met. Overall annual primary energy use is projected to reduce by between 25% and 50% by 2050 compared to 2015 due to ambitious efficiency improvements within homes and vehicles. However both annual and peak electricity demands in 2050 are more than double compared with 2015. Managed electric vehicle charging could save 14TWh/year in gas-fired power generation at peak times and associated emissions whilst vehicle-to-grid services could provide 10GW of electricity supply during peak hours. Together managed vehicle charging and vehicle-to-grid supplies could result in a 16% reduction in total annual energy costs. The provision of fast public charging facilities could reduce peak electricity demand by 17GW and save an estimated £650 million annually. Although using hydrogen for heating and transport spreads the hydrogen network costs between homeowners and motorists it is still estimated to be more costly overall compared to an all-electric scenario. Bio-energy electricity generation plants with carbon capture and storage are required to drive overall energy system emissions to net zero utilisation of which is lowest when heating is electrified and road transport consists of a mix of electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. The analysis demonstrates the need for an integrated systems approach to energy and transport policies and for coordination between national and local governments.
On the Climate Impacts of Blue Hydrogen Production

Natural gas based hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage is referred to as blue hydrogen. If substantial amounts of CO2 from natural gas reforming are captured and permanently stored such hydrogen could be a low-carbon energy carrier. However recent research raises questions about the effective climate impacts of blue hydrogen from a life cycle perspective. Our analysis sheds light on the relevant issues and provides a balanced perspective on the impacts on climate change associated with blue hydrogen. We show that such impacts may indeed vary over large ranges and depend on only a few key parameters: the methane emission rate of the natural gas supply chain the CO2 removal rate at the hydrogen production plant and the global warming metric applied. State-of-the-art reforming with high CO2 capture rates combined with natural gas supply featuring low methane emissions does indeed allow for substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to both conventional natural gas reforming and direct combustion of natural gas. Under such conditions blue hydrogen is compatible with low-carbon economies and exhibits climate change impacts at the upper end of the range of those caused by hydrogen production from renewable-based electricity. However neither current blue nor green hydrogen production pathways render fully “net-zero” hydrogen without additional CO2 removal.
A Multi-objective MILP Model for the Design and Operation of Future Integrated Multi-vector Energy Networks Capturing Detailed Spatio-temporal Dependencies

A multi-objective optimisation model based on mixed integer linear programming is presented that can simultaneously determine the design and operation of any integrated multi-vector energy networks. It can answer variants of the following questions: What is the most effective way in terms of cost value/profit and/or emissions of designing and operating the integrated multi-vector energy networks that utilise a variety of primary energy sources to deliver different energy services such as heat electricity and mobility given the availability of primary resources and the levels of demands and their distribution across space and time? When to invest in technologies where to locate them; what resources should be used where when and how to convert them to the energy services required; how to transport the resources and manage inventory? Scenarios for Great Britain were examined involving different primary energy sources such as natural gas biomass and wind power in order to satisfy demands for heat electricity and mobility via various energy vectors such as electricity natural gas hydrogen and syngas. Different objectives were considered such as minimising cost maximising profit minimising emissions and maximising renewable energy production subject to the availability of suitable land for biomass and wind turbines as well as the maximum local production and import rates for natural gas. Results suggest that if significant mobility demands are met by hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles then hydrogen is the preferred energy vector over natural gas for satisfying heat demands. If natural gas is not used and energy can only be generated from wind power and biomass electricity and syngas are the preferred energy carriers for satisfying electricity and heat demands.

HyDeploy: Demonstrating Non-destructive Carbon Savings Through Hydrogen Blending

The project has successfully developed the safety case and delivered a hydrogen blend via the gas network into customers’ homes. The demonstration of safety for the specific network was based on robust evidence and clear operational procedures. Alongside the enabling safety case the HyDeploy project has demonstrated the first steps of hydrogen deployment are safe technically feasible and non-disruptive both for the network and domestic users.

- The design fabrication installation and operation of the UK’s first hydrogen grid entry unit.
- Integration of novel hydrogen production and blending technologies to create the first hydrogen delivery system based on electrolytic generation into a live gas grid.
- Safe delivery of the UK’s first hydrogen blend trial to 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings. The trial delivered over 42000 cubic metres of hydrogen and abated over 27 tonnes of CO2.
- Collaboration with appliance and equipment providers to build a robust evidence base to demonstrate equipment suitability.
- Evidencing the suitability of hydrogen blends with domestic appliances as well as larger commercial appliances including catering equipment and boilers up to 600 kW.

Electric trains (ET) and hydrogen trains (HT) are considered zero emission at the point of use. True emissions are dependent upon non-tailpipe sources primarily in energy production. We present UK carbon dioxide (CO2) operating emission model outputs for conventionally fuelled trains (CFT) ETs and HTs between 2017 and 2050 under four National Grid electricity generation scenarios.
Comparing four service categories (urban regional intercity and high speed) to private conventionally fuelled vehicles (CFV) and electric vehicles considering average distance travelled per trip under different passenger capacity levels (125% 100% 75% 50% and 25%).
Results indicate by 2050 at 100% capacity CFTs produce a fifth of the emissions of CFVs per kilometre per person. Under two degree generation scenario by 2050 ETs produced 14 times and HTs produced five times less emissions than CFTs. Policymakers should encourage shifts away from private vehicles to public transport powered by low carbon electricity.

In response to the global climate emergency governments across the world are aiming to lower greenhouse gas emissions to slow the damaging effects of climate change.<br/>The Scottish Government has set a target of net zero emissions by 2045. Already a global leader in renewable energy and low-carbon technology deployment Scotland’s energy landscape is set to undergo more change as it moves toward becoming carbon-neutral. Key to that change will be the transition from natural gas to zero-carbon gases like hydrogen and biomethane.<br/>Scotland’s north-east and central belt are home to some of its largest industrial carbon emitters. The sector’s reliance on natural gas means that it emits 11.9Mt of CO2 emissions per year says NECCUS: the equivalent of 2.6 million cars or roughly all the cars in Scotland. Most homes and businesses across Scotland also use natural gas for heating.<br/>Our North-East Network and Industrial Cluster project is laying the foundations for the rapid decarbonisation of this high-emitting sector. We’ve published a report outlining the practical steps needed to rapidly decarbonise a significant part of Scotland’s homes and industry. It demonstrates how hydrogen can play a leading role in delivering the Scottish Government’s target of one million homes with low carbon heat by 2030.<br/>The research published with global consulting and engineering advisor Wood sets out a transformational and accelerated pathway to 100% hydrogen for Scotland’s gas networks which you can see on the map below. Well to Wheel Analysis of Low Carbon Alternatives for Road Traffic

Several alternative fuel–vehicle combinations are being considered for replacement of the internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the dependence on fossil fuels. The International Energy Agency has proposed the inclusion of low carbon alternatives such as electricity hydrogen and biofuels in the transport sector for reducing the GHG emissions and providing a sustainable future. This paper compares the use of these alternative fuels viz. electricity hydrogen and bio-ethanol in combination with battery electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technologies on the basis of their overall efficiency and GHG emissions involved in the conversion of the primary energy source to the actual energy required at wheels through a well-to-wheel analysis. The source of energy for electricity production plays a major role in determining the overall efficiency and the GHG emissions of a BEV. Hence electricity production mix of Germany (60% fossil fuel energy) France (76% nuclear energy) Sweden and Austria (60 and 76% renewable energy respectively) the European Union mix (48% fossil fuel energy) and the United States of America (68% fossil fuel energy) are considered for the BEV analysis. In addition to the standard hydrogen based FCEVs CNG and bio-ethanol based FCEVs are analysed. The influence of a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) on GHG emissions and overall chain efficiency is discussed. In addition to the standard sources of bio-ethanol (like sugarcane corn etc.) sources like wood waste and wheat straw are included in the analysis. The results of this study suggest that a BEV powered by an electricity production mix dominated by renewable energy and bio-ethanol based DEFC electric vehicles offer the best solution in terms of GHG emissions efficiency and fossil fuel dependency. Bio-ethanol as a fuel has the additional advantage to be implemented readily in ICE vehicles followed by advancements through reformer based FCEVs and DEFC electric vehicles. Although important this analysis does not include the health effects of the alternative vehicles. Bio-ethanol used in an ICE may lead to increased emission of acetaldehydes which however might not be the case if it is used in fuel cells.

Evaluation of Performance Characteristics of a Novel Hydrogen-fuelled Free-piston Engine Generator

In this work we present the experimental results obtained from hydrogen fuelled spark-ignited dual piston free-piston engine generator (FPEG) prototype operated in two-stroke and four-stroke mode. The FPEG testing was successfully conducted at 3.7 compression ratio engine speed between 5 Hz and 11 Hz and with different equivalence ratios. The FPEG technical details experimental set-up and operational control are explained in detail. Performance indicators show that both equivalence ratio and engine speed affect the engine operation characteristics. For every set of specified FPEG parameters appropriate range of equivalence ratio is recommended to prevent unwanted disturbance to electric generator operation. Both two-stroke and four-stroke cycle mode were tested and the results showed different combustion characteristics with the two thermodynamic cycles. Four-stroke cycle mode could operate with indicated thermal efficiency gain up to 13.2% compared with the two-stroke cycle.

The substitution of hydrogen for natural gas within a gas network has implications for the potential rate of leakage from pipes and the distribution of gas flow driven by such leaks. This paper presents theoretical analyses of low-pressure flow through porous ground in a range of circumstances and practical experimental work at a realistic scale using natural gas hydrogen or nitrogen for selected cases. This study considers flow and distribution of 100% hydrogen. A series of eight generic flow regimes have been analysed theoretically e.g. (i) a crack in uncovered ground (ii) a crack under a semi-permeable cover in a high porosity channel (along a service line or road). In all cases the analyses yield both the change in flow rate when hydrogen leaks and the change in distance to which hydrogen gas can travel at a dangerous rate compared to natural gas. In some scenarios a change to hydrogen gas from natural gas makes minimal difference to the range (i.e. distance from the leak) at which significant gas flows will occur. However in cases where the leak is covered by an impermeable membrane a change to hydrogen from natural gas may extend the range of significant gas flow by tens or even hundreds of metres above that of natural gas. Demonstration of a kW-scale Solid Oxide Fuel Cell-calciner for Power Generation and Production of Calcined Materials

Carbonate looping (CaL) has been shown to be less energy-intensive when compared to mature carbon capture technologies. Further reduction in the efficiency penalties can be achieved by employing a more efficient source of heat for the calcination process instead of oxy-fuel combustion. In this study a kW-scale solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-integrated calciner was designed and developed to evaluate the technical feasibility of simultaneously generating power and driving the calcination process using the high-grade heat of the anode off-gas. Such a system can be integrated with CaL systems or employed as a negative-emission technology where the calcines are used to capture CO2 from the atmosphere. The demonstration unit consisted of a planar SOFC stack operating at 750 °C and a combined afterburner/calciner to combust hydrogen slip from the anode off-gas and thermally decompose magnesite dolomite and limestone. The demonstrator generated up to 2 kWelDC power achieved a temperature in the range of 530–550 °C at the inlet of the afterburner and up to 678 °C in the calciner which was sufficient to demonstrate full calcination of magnesite and partial calcination of dolomite. However in order to achieve the temperature required for calcination of limestone further scale-up and heat integration are needed. These results confirmed technical feasibility of the SOFC-calciner concept for production of calcined materials either for the market or for direct air capture (DAC).
Fugitive Hydrogen Emissions in a Future Hydrogen Economy

There is an increasing body of evidence that leakage of hydrogen to the atmosphere will have an indirect warming effect on the climate and so should be minimised.<br/>This study investigates and quantifies the current understanding of potential hydrogen emissions in the different sectors across a future hydrogen value-chain. It shows that there are some key areas in production distribution and end-use where there could potentially be significant leaks of hydrogen to the atmosphere. In some of these areas there are clear mitigation options while with others the options are less clear due to uncertainty in either data or future technology development.<br/>The report recommends further research and development to reduce the main leak pathways and additional evidence gathering in key areas where there is currently inadequate data to make accurate predictions.<br/>The study was commissioned by BEIS and conducted by the Frazer-Nash consultancy.
Detection of Contaminants in Hydrogen Fuel for Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicles with Sensors—Available Technology, Testing Protocols and Implementation Challenges

Europe’s low-carbon energy policy favors a greater use of fuel cells and technologies based on hydrogen used as a fuel. Hydrogen delivered at the hydrogen refueling station must be compliant with requirements stated in different standards. Currently the quality control process is performed by offline analysis of the hydrogen fuel. It is however beneficial to continuously monitor at least some of the contaminants onsite using chemical sensors. For hydrogen quality control with regard to contaminants high sensitivity integration parameters and low cost are the most important requirements. In this study we have reviewed the existing sensor technologies to detect contaminants in hydrogen then discussed the implementation of sensors at a hydrogen refueling stations described the state-of-art in protocols to perform assessment of these sensor technologies and finally identified the gaps and needs in these areas. It was clear that sensors are not yet commercially available for all gaseous contaminants mentioned in ISO14687:2019. The development of standardized testing protocols is required to go hand in hand with the development of chemical sensors for this application following a similar approach to the one undertaken for air sensors.
Dedicated Large-scale Floating Offshore Wind to Hydrogen: Assessing Design Variables in Proposed Typologies

To achieve the Net-Zero Emissions goal by 2050 a major upscale in green hydrogen needs to be achieved; this will also facilitate use of renewable electricity as a source of decarbonised fuel in hard-to-abate sectors such as industry and transport. Nearly 80% of the world’s offshore wind resource is in waters deeper than 60 m where bottom-fixed wind turbines are not feasible. This creates a significant opportunity to couple the high capacity factor floating offshore wind and green hydrogen. In this paper we consider dedicated large-scale floating offshore wind farms for hydrogen production with three coupling typologies; (i) centralised onshore electrolysis (ii) decentralised offshore electrolysis and (iii) centralised offshore electrolysis. The typology design is based on variables including for: electrolyser technology; floating wind platform; and energy transmission vector (electrical power or offshore hydrogen pipelines). Offshore hydrogen pipelines are assessed as economical for large and distant farms. The decentralised offshore typology employing a semi-submersible platform could accommodate a proton exchange membrane electrolyser on deck; this would negate the need for an additional separate structure or hydrogen export compression and enhance dynamic operational ability. It is flexible; if one electrolyser (or turbine) fails hydrogen production can easily continue on the other turbines. It also facilities flexibility in further expansion as it is very much a modular system. Alternatively less complexity is associated with the centralised offshore typology which may employ the electrolysis facility on a separate offshore platform and be associated with a farm of spar-buoy platforms in significant water depth locations.
What is the Energy Balance of Electrofuels Produced Through Power-to-fuel Integration with Biogas Facilities?

The need to reduce the climate impact of the transport sector has led to an increasing interest in the utilisation of alternative fuels. Producing advanced fuels through the integration of anaerobic digestion and power-to-fuel technologies may offer a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from difficult to decarbonise modes of transport such as heavy goods vehicles shipping and commercial aviation while also offering wider system benefits. This paper investigates the energy balance of power-to-fuel (power-to-methane power-to-methanol power-to-Fischer-Tropsch fuels) production integrated with a biogas facility co-digesting grass silage and dairy slurry. Through the integration of power-to-methane with anaerobic digestion an increase in system gross energy of 62.6% was found. Power-to-methanol integration with the biogas system increased the gross energy by 50% while power-to-Fischer-Tropsch fuels increased the gross energy yield by 32%. The parasitic energy demand for hydrogen production was highlighted as the most significant factor for integrated biogas and power-to-fuel facilities. Consuming electricity that would otherwise have been curtailed and optimising the anaerobic digestion process were identified as key to improving the energetic efficiency of all system configurations. However the broad cross-sectoral benefits of the overarching cascading circular economy system such as providing electrical grid stability and utilising waste resources must also be considered for a comprehensive perspective on the integration of anaerobic digestion and power-to-fuel.
Achieving Carbon-neutral Iron and Steelmaking in Europe Through the Deployment of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage

The 30 integrated steel plants operating in the European Union (EU) are among the largest single-point CO2 emitters in the region. The deployment of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (bio-CCS) could significantly reduce their emission intensities. In detail the results demonstrate that CO2 emission reduction targets of up to 20% can be met entirely by biomass deployment. A slow CCS technology introduction on top of biomass deployment is expected as the requirement for emission reduction increases further. Bio-CCS could then be a key technology particularly in terms of meeting targets above 50% with CO2 avoidance costs ranging between €60 and €100 tCO2−1 at full-scale deployment. The future of bio-CCS and its utilisation on a larger scale would therefore only be viable if such CO2 avoidance cost were to become economically appealing. Small and medium plants in particular would economically benefit from sharing CO2 pipeline networks. CO2 transport however makes a relatively small contribution to the total CO2 avoidance cost. In the future the role of bio-CCS in the European iron and steelmaking industry will also be influenced by non-economic conditions such as regulations public acceptance realistic CO2 storage capacity and the progress of other mitigation technologies.

Chemical Inhibition of Premixed Hydrogen-air Flames: Experimental Investigation using a 20-litre Vessel

Throughout the history of the mining petroleum process and nuclear industries continuous efforts have been made to develop and improve measures to prevent and mitigate accidental explosions. Over the coming decades energy systems are expected to undergo a transition towards sustainable use of conventional hydrocarbons and an increasing share of renewable energy sources in the global energy mix. The variable and intermittent supply of energy from solar and wind points to energy systems based on hydrogen or hydrogen-based fuels as the primary energy carriers. However the safety-related properties of hydrogen imply that it is not straightforward to achieve and document the same level of safety for hydrogen systems compared to similar systems based on established fuels such as petrol diesel and natural gas. Compared to the conventional fuels hydrogen-air mixtures have lower ignition energy higher combustion reactivity and a propensity to undergo deflagration-to-detonation-transition (DDT) under certain conditions. To achieve an acceptable level of safety it is essential to develop effective measures for mitigating the consequences of hydrogen explosions in systems with certain degree of congestion and confinement. Extensive research over the last decade have demonstrated that chemical inhibition or partial suppression can be used for mitigating the consequences of vapour cloud explosions (VCEs) in congested process plants. Total and cooperation partners have demonstrated that solid flame inhibitors injected into flammable hydrocarbon-air clouds represent an effective means of mitigating the consequences of VCEs involving hydrocarbons. For hydrogen-air explosions these same chemicals inhibitors have not proved effective. It is however well-known that hydrocarbons can affect the burning velocity of hydrogen-air mixtures greatly. This paper gives an overview over previous work on chemical inhibitors. In addition experiments in a 20-litre vessel have been performed to investigate the effect of combinations of hydrocarbons and alkali salts on hydrogen/air mixtures.
The Use of Strontium Ferrite in Chemical Looping Systems

This work reports a detailed chemical looping investigation of strontium ferrite (SrFeO3−δ) a material with the perovskite structure type able to donate oxygen and stay in a nonstoichiometric form over a broad range of oxygen partial pressures starting at temperatures as low as 250°C (reduction in CO measured in TGA). SrFeO3−δ is an economically attractive simple but remarkably stable material that can withstand repeated phase transitions during redox cycling. Mechanical mixing and calcination of iron oxide and strontium carbonate was evaluated as an effective way to obtain pure SrFeO3−δ. In–situ XRD was performed to analyse structure transformations during reduction and reoxidation. Our work reports that much deeper reduction from SrFeO3−δ to SrO and Fe is reversible and results in oxygen release at a chemical potential suitable for hydrogen production. Thermogravimetric experiments with different gas compositions were applied to characterize the material and evaluate its available oxygen capacity. In both TGA and in-situ XRD experiments the material was reduced below δ=0.5 followed by reoxidation either with CO2 or air to study phase segregation and reversibility of crystal structure transitions. As revealed by in-situ XRD even deeply reduced material regenerates at 900°C to SrFeO3−δ with a cubic structure. To investigate the catalytic behaviour of SrFeO3−δ in methane combustion experiments were performed in a fluidized bed rig. These showed SrFeO3−δ donates O2 into the gas phase but also assists with CH4 combustion by supplying lattice oxygen. To test the material for combustion and hydrogen production long cycling experiments in a fluidized bed rig were also performed. SrFeO3−δ showed stability over 30 redox cycles both in experiments with a 2-step oxidation performed in CO2 followed by air as well as a single step oxidation in CO2 alone. Finally the influence of CO/CO2 mixtures on material performance was tested; a fast and deep reduction in elevated pCO2 makes the material susceptible to carbonation but the process can be reversed by increasing the temperature or lowering pCO2.
Current Status of Automotive Fuel Cells for Sustainable Transport

Automotive proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have finally reached a state of technological readiness where several major automotive companies are commercially leasing and selling fuel cell electric vehicles including Toyota Honda and Hyundai. These now claim vehicle speed and acceleration refueling time driving range and durability that rival conventional internal combustion engines and in most cases outperform battery electric vehicles. The residual challenges and areas of improvement which remain for PEMFCs are performance at high current density durability and cost. These are expected to be resolved over the coming decade while hydrogen infrastructure needs to become widely available. Here we briefly discuss the status of automotive PEMFCs misconceptions about the barriers that platinum usage creates and the remaining hurdles for the technology to become broadly accepted and implemented.

Possible Hydrogen Transitions in the UK: Critical Uncertainties and Possible Decision Points

Many energy system optimization studies show that hydrogen may be an important part of an optimal decarbonisation mix but such analyses are unable to examine the uncertainties associated with breaking the ‘locked-in’ nature of incumbent systems. Uncertainties around technical learning rates; consumer behaviour; and the strategic interactions of governments automakers and fuel providers are particularly acute. System dynamics and agent-based models and studies of historical alternative fuel transitions have furthered our understanding of possible transition dynamics but these types of analysis exclude broader systemic issues concerning energy system evolution (e.g. supplies and prices of low-carbon energy) and the politics of transitions. This paper presents a hybrid approach to assessing hydrogen transitions in the UK by linking qualitative scenarios with quantitative energy systems modelling using the UK MARKAL model. Three possible transition pathways are explored each exploring different uncertainties and possible decision points with modelling used to inform and test key elements of each scenario. The scenarios draw on literature review and participatory input and the scenario structure is based on archetypal transition dynamics drawn from historical energy system transitions reflecting insights relating to innovation system development and resistance to change. Conclusions are drawn about appropriate policy responses.
Producing Low Carbon Gas- Future Gas Series part 2

Of all the sectors in the UK decarbonising heat remains one of the most challenging. Heat used for industrial domestic and commercial purposes generates around a third of all UK carbon emissions 70% of which is due to burning natural gas. In order to meet our legally binding national climate change targets unabated natural gas use for heat must be phased out. Low carbon gas - including hydrogen and biogases - is one option to replace it. The Future Gas Series examines the opportunities and challenges associated with using low carbon gas to help decarbonise the UK economy.<br/><br/>This is the second report in the three-part Future Gas Series. Part 1: Next Steps for the Gas Grid explored the potential to decarbonise the existing gas grid. The report Part 2: the Production of Low Carbon Gas focuses on the issues related to the production of low carbon gas. It considers the different production technologies the potential scale of deployment of each method and the potential feedstocks. It also discusses issues related to bulk transport and storage of gas. Put together from expert evidence from across industry and academia it provides a balanced guide for policy makers in this area. It was a co-chaired by James Heappey MP (Conservative) Alan Whitehead MP (Labour) and Alistair Carmichael MP (SNP).<br/><br/>Carbon Connect suggests that biogases- such as biomethane and bioSNG- provide low regrets opportunities in the near term to provide low carbon heat and could also potentially make use of waste that would otherwise go to landfill. However they require further support to allow them to continue contributing to decarbonising the UK economy. Hydrogen could provide huge decarbonisation opportunities and has applications across the energy system from putting hydrogen in the gas grid to be burnt for heat in homes to hydrogen buses and trains. However to realise this potential a market for hydrogen must be built up. This should incentivise business to invest in hydrogen technologies reward those who use hydrogen and build up hydrogen infrastructure.<br/><br/>
Characterisation, Dispersion and Electrostatic Hazards of Liquid Hydrogen for the PRESLHY Project

Liquid hydrogen has the potential to form part of the energy strategy in the future due to the need to decarbonise and replace fossil fuels and therefore could see widespread use. Adoption of LH2 means that the associated hazards need to be understood and managed. In recognition of this the European Union Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking co-funded project PRESLHY undertook prenormative research for the safe use of cryogenic liquid hydrogen in non-industrial settings. Several key scenarios were identified as knowledge gaps and both theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to provide insight into these scenarios. This included experiments studying the evolution/dispersion of a hydrogen cloud following a liquid release and the generation of electrostatic charges in hydrogen plumes and pipework each of which are described and discussed. In addition assessment of the physical phase of the hydrogen flow within the pipework (i.e. liquid gas or two phase) was investigated. The objectives experimental set up and result summary are provided. Data generated from these experiments is to be used to generate and validate theoretical models and ultimately contribute to the development of regulations codes and standards for the storage handling and use of liquid hydrogen.
HyDeploy2: Appliance Testing Summary and Interpretation

In order to inform the Quantified Risk Assessment (QRA) and procedures for the Winlaton trial the HyDeploy 2 project has undertaken a second programme of work focused on assessing the safe operation of gas appliances with hydrogen blended gas. This work extends the initial programme of work undertaken in HyDeploy 1 in 2018. Perspective on the Hydrogen Economy as a Pathway to Reach Net-zero CO2 Emissions in Europe

The envisioned role of hydrogen in the energy transition – or the concept of a hydrogen economy – has varied through the years. In the past hydrogen was mainly considered a clean fuel for cars and/or electricity production; but the current renewed interest stems from the versatility of hydrogen in aiding the transition to CO2 neutrality where the capability to tackle emissions from distributed applications and complex industrial processes is of paramount importance. However the hydrogen economy will not materialise without strong political support and robust infrastructure design. Hydrogen deployment needs to address multiple barriers at once including technology development for hydrogen production and conversion infrastructure co-creation policy market design and business model development. In light of these challenges we have brought together a group of hydrogen researchers who study the multiple interconnected disciplines to offer a perspective on what is needed to deploy the hydrogen economy as part of the drive towards net-zero-CO2 societies. We do this by analysing (i) hydrogen end-use technologies and applications (ii) hydrogen production methods (iii) hydrogen transport and storage networks (iv) legal and regulatory aspects and (v) business models. For each of these we provide key take home messages ranging from the current status to the outlook and needs for further research. Overall we provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the elements in the hydrogen economy state of play and gaps to be filled.
Catalysing Hydrogen Investment: What the Market Needs to Deliver Investment in Hydrogen Infrastructure

Written by Arup in collaboration with the GIIA this report is centred on the opinions of investors from around the world gathered through a survey of GIIA members and in-depth interviews. It therefore presents the sentiments of the world’s leading fund managers insurance investors pension funds and a sovereign wealth fund. Their opinions matter because these are the decision makers that hold the purse strings when it comes to private sector investment in hydrogen infrastructure. Many of the facts about hydrogen are well-known to many readers and these are presented in this report drawing on Arup’s research and experience as a global infrastructure advisory firm. However the novelty of this report is that it looks at hydrogen through the uncompromising eyes of investors with analysis of feedback which identifies barriers to investment in the infrastructure required to enable the hydrogen economy. Perhaps most importantly it also proposes interventions that policymakers and regulators could take to overcome the barriers currently faced.<br/>Introduction The sentiments of investors are at the heart of this study with results from the survey presented at the beginning of each section to serve as a launch pad for Arup’s analysis. But we want it to be more than an interesting read; it is a call to action for policy makers to create the right environment to catalyse private sector investment and kickstart the hydrogen economy.

Evaluating the Opportunity to Repurpose Gas Transmission Assets for Hydrogen Transportation

The UK National Transmission System (NTS) is a key enabler to decarbonise the gas network in Great Britain (GB) in order to meet the UK government’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050. FutureGrid is National Grid’s research programme assessing the capability of the transmission system to transport hydrogen. Our goal is to accelerate the decarbonisation of power industry and heat by delivering a safe supply of energy to all customers both during and after the energy transition. FutureGrid will lead to a better understanding of what the technical parameters are around the ultimate role of the NTS in the energy system and how the transition can be managed. Under FutureGrid National Grid will construct a NTS hydrogen test facility at DNV’s Spadeadam testing and research site. NTS assets due to be decommissioned in early RIIO2 will be reconstructed to create a test network that can be used to answer some of the fundamental questions around safety and operation of a converted network. Flows of hydrogen/natural gas blends including 100% hydrogen will be tested for the first time in GB at transmission pressures. This system will connect to the existing H21 distribution network test facility at Spadeadam to prove a complete beach-to-meter network can be decarbonised to develop a comprehensive programme for the hydrogen transition. The project will provide a transmission facility which is a key enabler for more advanced hydrogen testing on industrial equipment such as hydrogen separation technology hydrogen compressors and/or purification of hydrogen for transport. Our paper will detail the current position and aims of the project.
Assessing Damaged Pipelines Transporting Hydrogen

There is worldwide interest in transporting hydrogen using both new pipelines and pipelines converted from natural gas service. Laboratory tests investigating the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of pipeline steels have shown that even low partial pressures of hydrogen can substantially reduce properties such as reduction in area and fracture toughness and increase fatigue crack growth rates. However qualitative arguments suggest that the effects on pipelines may not be as severe as predicted from the small scale tests. If the trends seen in laboratory tests do occur in service there are implications for the assessment of damage such as volumetric corrosion dents and mechanical interference. Most pipeline damage assessment methods are semi-empirical and have been calibrated with data from full scale tests that did not involve hydrogen. Hence the European Pipeline Research Group (EPRG) commissioned a study to investigate damage assessment methods in the presence of hydrogen. Two example pipeline designs were considered both were assessed assuming a modern high performance material and an older material. From these analyses the numerical results show that the high toughness material will tolerate damage even if the properties are degraded by hydrogen exposure. However low toughness materials may not be able to tolerate some types of severe damage. If the predictions are realistic operators may have to repair more damage or reduce operating pressures. Furthermore damage involving cracking may not Page 2 of 22 satisfy the ASME B31.12 requirements for preventing time dependent crack growth. Further work is required to determine if the effects predicted using small scale laboratory test data will occur in practice.
An Investigation into the Volumetric Flow Rate Requirement of Hydrogen Transportation in Existing Natural Gas Pipelines and Its Safety Implications

As an alternative to the construction of new infrastructure repurposing existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transportation has been identified as a low-cost strategy for substituting natural gas with hydrogen in the wake of the energy transition. In line with that a 342 km 3600 natural gas pipeline was used in this study to simulate some technical implications of delivering the same amount of energy with different blends of natural gas and hydrogen and with 100% hydrogen. Preliminary findings from the study confirmed that a three-fold increase in volumetric flow rate would be required of hydrogen to deliver an equivalent amount of energy as natural gas. The effects of flowing hydrogen at this rate in an existing natural gas pipeline on two flow parameters (the compressibility factor and the velocity gradient) which are crucial to the safety of the pipeline were investigated. The compressibility factor behaviour revealed the presence of a wide range of values as the proportions of hydrogen and natural gas in the blends changed signifying disparate flow behaviours and consequent varying flow challenges. The velocity profiles showed that hydrogen can be transported in natural gas pipelines via blending with natural gas by up to 40% of hydrogen in the blend without exceeding the erosional velocity limits of the pipeline. However when the proportion of hydrogen reached 60% the erosional velocity limit was reached at 290 km so that beyond this distance the pipeline would be subject to internal erosion. The use of compressor stations was shown to be effective in remedying this challenge. This study provides more insights into the volumetric and safety considerations of adopting existing natural gas pipelines for the transportation of hydrogen and blends of hydrogen and natural gas.
Development of a Hydrogen Supplement for use with IGEM/SR/25

In response to the UK Government’s commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 a range of research and demonstration projects are underway to investigate the feasibility of using hydrogen in place of natural gas within the national transmission and distribution system. In order for these projects to achieve their full scope of work a mechanism for performing hazardous area classification for hydrogen installations is required. At present IGEM/SR/25 is used to undertake such assessments for natural gas installations but the standard is not currently applicable to hydrogen or hydrogen/natural gas blends.<br/>This report presents updated data and a summary of the recommended methodologies for hazardous area classification of installations using hydrogen or blends of up to 20% hydrogen in natural gas. The contents of this report are intended to provide a technical commentary and the data for a hydrogen-specific supplement to IGEM/SR/25. The supplement will specifically cover 100% hydrogen and a 20/80% by volume blend of hydrogen/natural gas. Reference to intermediate blends is included in this report where appropriate to cover the anticipated step-wise introduction of hydrogen into the natural gas network.<br/>This report is divided into a series of appendices each of which covers a specific area of the IGEM standard. Each appendix includes a summary of specific recommendations made to enable IGEM/SR/25 to be applied to hydrogen and blends of up to 20% hydrogen in natural gas. The reader is encouraged to review the individual appendices for specific conclusions associated with the topic areas addressed in this report.<br/>In general the existing methodologies and approaches used for area classification in IGEM/SR/25 have been deemed appropriate for installations using either hydrogen or blends of up to 20% hydrogen in natural gas. Where necessary revised versions of the equations and zoning distances used in the standard are presented which account for the influence of material property differences between natural gas and the two alternative fuels considered in this work.
“Bigger than Government”: Exploring the Social Construction and Contestation of Net-zero Industrial Megaprojects in England

Industry is frequently framed as hard-to-decarbonize given its diversity of requirements technologies and supply chains many of which are unique to particular sectors. Net zero commitments since 2019 have begun to challenge the carbon intensity of these various industries but progress has been slow globally. Against this backdrop the United Kingdom has emerged as a leader in industrial decarbonization efforts. Their approach is based on industrial clusters which cut across engineering spatial and socio-political dimensions. Two of the largest of these clusters in England in terms of industrial emissions are the Humber and Merseyside. In this paper drawn from a rich mixed methods original dataset involving expert interviews (N = 46 respondents) site visits (N = 20) a review of project documents and the academic literature we explore ongoing efforts to decarbonize both the Humber and Merseyside through the lens of spatially expansive and technically complex megaprojects. Both have aggressive implementation plans in place for the deployment of net-zero infrastructure with Zero Carbon Humber seeking billions in investment to build the country’s first large-scale bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) plant alongside a carbon transport network and hydrogen production infrastructure and HyNet seeking billions in investment to build green and blue hydrogen facilities along with a carbon storage network near Manchester and Liverpool. We draw from the social construction of technology (SCOT) literature to examine the relevant social groups interpretive flexibility and patterns of closure associated with Zero Carbon Humber and HyNet. We connect our findings to eight interpretive frames surrounding the collective projects and make connections to problems contestation and closure.
HyDeploy Report: Summary of European Hydrogen Blending Projects

Across Europe permitted blend levels of hydrogen blending into the gas grid are appreciably higher than that currently permitted in the UK up to 12% mol/mol compared with 0.1% mol/mol. Whilst there is some routine blending undertaking – typically power to gas applications three major projects have been undertaken to demonstrate operation of a gas distribution network at higher blend levels of hydrogen.<br/>A Dutch project was completed in 2011 which demonstrated successful operation into a network with new appliances at 20% mol/mol. A German project was completed in 2015 which demonstrated successful operation into an existing gas network with existing appliances at their permitted level of 10% mol/mol. In France an extensive programme is underway to inject hydrogen into a network at 20% mol/mol due to commence injection in 2018.<br/>Each of these projects undertook extensive pre-trial activities and operational data was collected during the Dutch and German trials. The programme of pre-trial work for the French project was particularly extensive and mirrored the work done by HyDeploy. This led to a permit being granted for the French project at 20% mol/mol with injection into the network imminent.<br/>The HyDeploy team has engaged with each of the project teams who have been very co-operative; this has enabled scientific sharing of best practice. In all cases the projects were successful. The participants in the Dutch project were particularly keen to have been able to undertake a similar trial to HyDeploy; a larger trial into existing appliances. However political changes in Holland have precluded that at this time such progress was not limited by technical findings from the work.<br/>A high level overview of the projects and the data provided is summarised in this report. Towards a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy: Optimisation-based Framework for Hydrogen Infrastructure Development

This work studies the development of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure that supports the transition towards a low-carbon transport system in the United Kingdom (UK). The future hydrogen demand is forecasted over time using a logistic diffusion model which reaches 50% of the market share by 2070. The problem is solved using an extension of SHIPMod an optimisation-based framework that consists of a multi-period spatially-explicit mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation. The optimisation model combines the infrastructure elements required throughout the different phases of the transition namely economies of scale road and pipeline transportation modes and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies in order to minimise the present value of the total infrastructure cost using a discounted cash-flow analysis. The results show that the combination of all these elements in the mathematical formulation renders optimal solutions with the gradual infrastructure investments over time required for the transition towards a sustainable hydrogen economy.
The Role of Renewable Hydrogen and Inter-seasonal Storage in Decarbonising Heat – Comprehensive Optimisation of Future Renewable Energy Value Chains

Demands for space and water heating constitute a significant proportion of the total energy demands in Great Britain and are predominantly satisfied through natural gas which makes the heat sector a large emitter of carbon dioxide. Renewable hydrogen which can be injected into the gas grid or used directly in processes for generating heat and/or electricity is being considered as a low-carbon alternative energy carrier to natural gas because of its suitability for large-scale long- and short-term storage and low transportation losses all of which help to overcome the intermittency and seasonal variations in renewables. This requires new infrastructures for production storage transport and utilisation of renewable hydrogen – a hydrogen value chain – the design of which involves many interdependent decisions such as: where to locate wind turbines; where to locate electrolysers close to wind generation or close to demands; whether to transport energy as electricity or hydrogen and how; where to locate storage facilities; etc. This paper presents the Value Web Model a novel and comprehensive spatio-temporal mixed-integer linear programming model that can simultaneously optimise the design planning and operation of integrated energy value chains accounting for short-term dynamics inter-seasonal storage and investments out to 2050. It was coupled with GIS modelling to identify candidate sites for wind generation and used to optimise a number of scenarios for the production of hydrogen from onshore and offshore wind turbines in order to satisfy heat demands. The results show that over a wide range of scenarios the optimal pathway to heat is roughly 20% hydrogen and 80% electricity. Hydrogen storage both in underground caverns and pressurised tanks is a key enabling technology.
An Investigation of a (Vinylbenzyl) Trimethylammonium and N-Vinylimidazole-Substituted Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride-Co-Hexafluoropropylene) Copolymer as an Anion-Exchange Membrane in a Lignin-Oxidising Electrolyser

Electrolysis is seen as a promising route for the production of hydrogen from water as part of a move to a wider “hydrogen economy”. The electro-oxidation of renewable feedstocks offers an alternative anode couple to the (high-overpotential) electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction for developing low-voltage electrolysers. Meanwhile the exploration of new membrane materials is also important in order to try and reduce the capital costs of electrolysers. In this work we synthesise and characterise a previously unreported anion-exchange membrane consisting of a fluorinated polymer backbone grafted with imidazole and trimethylammonium units as the ion-conducting moieties. We then investigate the use of this membrane in a lignin-oxidising electrolyser. The new membrane performs comparably to a commercially-available anion-exchange membrane (Fumapem) for this purpose over short timescales (delivering current densities of 4.4 mA cm−2 for lignin oxidation at a cell potential of 1.2 V at 70 °C during linear sweep voltammetry) but membrane durability was found to be a significant issue over extended testing durations. This work therefore suggests that membranes of the sort described herein might be usefully employed for lignin electrolysis applications if their robustness can be improved.
The Role of Advanced Demand-sector Technologies and Energy Demand Reduction in Achieving Ambitious Carbon Budgets

Limiting cumulative carbon emissions to keep global temperature increase to well below 2°C (and as low as 1.5°C) is an extremely challenging task requiring rapid reduction in the carbon intensity of all sectors of the economy and with limited leeway for residual emissions. Addressing residual emissions in ‘challenging-to-decarbonise’ sectors such as the industrial and aviation sectors relies on the development and commercialization of innovative advanced technologies currently still in their infancy. The aim of this study was to (a) explore the role of advanced technologies in achieving deep decarbonisation of the energy system and (b) provide technology- specific details of how rapid and deep carbon intensity reductions can be achieved in the energy demand sectors. This was done using TIAM-Grantham – a linear cost optimization model of the global energy system with a detailed representation of demand-side technologies. We find that the inclusion of advanced technologies in the demand sectors together with energy demand reduction through behavioural changes enables the model to achieve the rapid and deep decarbonisation of the energy system associated with limiting global warming to below 2°C whilst at the same time reduces reliance on negative emissions technologies by up to ∼18% compared to the same scenario with a standard set of technologies. Realising such advanced technologies at commercial scales as well as achieving such significant reductions in energy demand represents a major challenge for policy makers businesses and civil society. There is an urgent need for continued R&D efforts in the demand sectors to ensure that advanced technologies become commercially available when we need them and to avoid the gamble of overreliance on negative emissions technologies to offset residual emissions.
Hydrogen Non-premixed Combustion in Enclosure with One Vent and Sustained Release: Numerical Experiments

Numerical experiments are performed to understand different regimes of hydrogen non-premixed combustion in an enclosure with passive ventilation through one horizontal or vertical vent located at the top of a wall. The Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with a reduced chemical reaction mechanism is described in detail. The model is based on the renormalization group (RNG) k-ε turbulence model the eddy dissipation concept (EDC) model for simulation of combustion coupled with the 18-step reduced chemical mechanism (8 species) and the in-situ adaptive tabulation (ISAT) algorithm that accelerates the reacting flow calculations by two to three orders of magnitude. The analysis of temperature and species (hydroxyl hydrogen oxygen water) concentrations in time as well as the velocity through the vent shed a light on regimes and dynamics of indoor hydrogen fires. A well-ventilated fire is simulated in the enclosure at a lower release flow rate and complete combustion of hydrogen within the enclosure. Fire becomes under-ventilated at higher release flow rates with two different modes observed. The first mode is the external flame stabilised at the enclosure vent at moderate release rates and the second mode is the self-extinction of combustion inside and outside the enclosure at higher hydrogen release rates. The simulations demonstrated a complex reacting flow dynamics in the enclosure that leads to formation of the external flame or the self-extinction. The air intake into the enclosure at later stages of the process through the whole vent area is a characteristic feature of the self-extinction regime. This air intake is due to faster cooling of hot combustion products by sustained colder hydrogen leak compared to the generation of hot products by the ceasing chemical reactions inside the enclosure and hydrogen supply. In general an increase of hydrogen sustained release flow rate will change fire regime from the well-ventilated combustion within the enclosure through the external flame stabilised at the vent and finally to the self-extinction of combustion throughout the domain.
EU Hydrogen Strategy: A Case for Urgent Action Towards Implementation

Interest in hydrogen as one route to the decarbonisation of energy systems has risen rapidly over the past few years with the publication of a number of hydrogen strategies from countries across the global energy economy. The momentum in Europe has increased sharply this month with the publication of an EU strategy to incorporate hydrogen into its plans for a net zero emission future. This Comment reviews the key elements of this strategy and provides an initial commentary on the main goals. We highlight the challenges that will be faced in meeting hydrogen production targets in particular via the “green hydrogen” route and analyse the plans for expanding the consumption of hydrogen in Europe. We also assess the infrastructure questions that will need to be answered if and when hydrogen takes on a greater role in the region and note the extensive state support that will be needed in the early years of the implementation of the strategy. Despite this though we applaud the ambition laid out by the EU and look forward to the provision of more detailed plans over the coming months and years.

Hydrogen Generation on Orkney: Integrating Established Risk Management Best Practice to Emerging Clean Energy Sector

The European Marine Energy Centre’s (EMEC) ITEG project (Integrating Tidal Energy into the European Grid) funded by Interreg NWE combines a tidal energy and hydrogen production solution to address grid constraints on the island of Eday in Orkney. The project will install a 0.5MW electrolyser at EMEC’s existing hydrogen production plant. EMEC and Risktec collaboratively applied best practice risk assessment and management techniques to assess and manage hydrogen safety. Hazard identification (HAZID) workshops were conducted collaboratively with design engineers through which a comprehensive hazard register was developed. Risktec applied bowtie analysis to each major accident hazard identified from the hazard register via virtual workshop with design engineers. The bowties promoted a structured review of each hazard’s threat and consequence identifying and reviewing the controls in place against good practice standards. The process revealed some recommendations for further improvement and risk reduction exemplifying a systematic management of risks associated with hydrogen hazards to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP). Hardware based barriers preventing or mitigating loss of control of these hazards were logged as safety critical elements (SCE) and procedural barriers as safety critical activities (SCA). To ensure that all SCEs and SCAs identified through the risk assessment process are managed throughout the facility’s operational lifetime a safety management system is created giving assurance of overall safety management system continued effectiveness. The process enables the demonstration that design risks are managed to ALARP during design and throughout operational lifetime. More importantly enabling ITEG to progress to construction and operation in 2021.
Progress in Reducing Emissions in Scotland: 2021 Report to Parliament

This is the tenth annual Progress Report to the Scottish Parliament as required by the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009. This year’s report shows that in 2019 Scotland’s greenhouse emissions fell by 2% compared to 2018 and are now 44% below 1990 levels. The reductions were largely driven by the manufacturing and construction and fuel supply sectors with electricity generation remaining the biggest driver of emissions cuts over the past decade (2009-2019). The potential for further emissions savings from electricity generation has however largely run out.
The focus must now shift to ensuring that rapid emissions reductions are delivered with no further delay to allow Scotland to meet its legislated 2030 target.
